Atmospheric concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in passive air sampler from Batam Island, Indonesia

Air contamination by semi volatile organic compounds including toxic polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) has been a matter of global concern due to the important atmospheric transportation in contribution to their widely distribution in environment. This study aims at elucidating the levels and spatial distribution of PBDEs in the atmosphere derived from polyurethane foam passive air sampler (PUF-PAS) and identify potential sources in Batam Island. Fifteen PUF-PAS were deployed in various locations representing different background activities. After deployment around 2.5 months, PUFs were analyzed for forty-two PBDEs congeners from mono- to deca-BDE congeners using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. PBDEs were widely detected ranging 7.2 – 2900 pg/m3. Significant high concentrations of PBDEs were found at public service areas than offices, residential and remote areas (p<0.05). In particular, high concentration was found in Marina Tanjung Riau (2900 pg/m3), whereas other locations were much lower including electronic shop (50 pg/m3), dumping site area (7.2-15 pg/m3), which indicating specific emission sources according to location. The PBDEs profiles are predominated by BDE-209 congener on average 81% (36-100) while other congeners were lower. This suggest that the presence of PBDEs in Batam Island is mainly due to the commercial formulation of Deca-BDE, of which consistent with its high consumption in Asia.

Characterization and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in shellfish in Shenzhen coastal waters and assessment of human health risks

This study aims to investigate the profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in shellfish obtained from Shenzhen coastal waters and assess the potential health risks. We analyzed 74 shellfish samples from eight different species for PBDEs (BDE-28, −47, −99, −100, −153, −154, −183, −209). The concentrations of total PBDEs in different shellfish species ranged from 2.02 to 360.17 pg g−1 wet weight, with the highest levels found in Pectinidae, Babylonia areolate, Ostreidae, Perna viridis, Haliotis diversicolor, Corbiculidae, Pinctada margaritifera, and Veneridae in descending order. Among the PBDE congeners analyzed, BDE-47 was the most abundant, followed by BDE-154 and BDE-153. Furthermore, the estimated daily intake of PBDEs through shellfish consumption for Shenzhen residents were between 0.11 and 0.19 ng kg−1(bw) day−1. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically investigate the profiles of PBDEs in eight different shellfish species from Shenzhen's coastal waters and evaluate the potential human health risks associated with shellfish consumption.

The Spatial Distribution and Potential Risk Assessment of POPs in Farmland around a Typical E-Waste Dismantling Site.

Pollution from electronic-waste (E-waste) dismantling is of great concern. This study investigated the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 253 cropland soil samples around an abandoned E-waste dismantling site in Taizhou city, Zhejiang province in China, using an analytical method which simultaneously extracted, purified and determined the identity and quantity of the three types of persistent organic pollutants. Meanwhile, their spatial distributions, pollution characteristics, and risk assessments were further analyzed. Total PCBs in the test soils ranged from below method detection limits (ND) to 2985.25μgkg-1 on a dry weight basis (d.w.), and the spatial distribution indicated a "hot spot" of PCBs pollution in the study area. The PAHs were detected in all samples with total concentrations ranging from 4.99 to 2723.06μgkg-1d.w. The distribution of PBDEs showed the pollution characteristics of "family-run workshops", with a total content range of ND ~ 899.34μgkg-1d.w., of which BDE209 was typically the dominant congener, accounting for 74.05% of the total PBDEs content in the test soils, with the highest content reaching 857.72μgkg-1d.w. Results showed that the ecological and lifetime carcinogenic risks of PCBs and PAHs were low in the study area, but the health risk caused by oral ingestion and dermal contact accounted for the highest proportion of the total exposure risks, while inhalation could be ignored. PBDEs in soils of the study area were a potential chronic non-carcinogenic risk, particularly for children. Therefore, in order to protect human health and environment, it is necessary to regulate the management of E-waste dismantling sites and pollution control.

A Pilot Study on the Concentration, Distribution and Bioaccumulation of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Tissues and Organs of Grassland Sheep.

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations in various tissues and organs of grassland sheep from Inner Mongolia, China, were determined. The abilities of PBDEs binding to ovine serum albumin (OSA) and Cytochrome P450 enzyme (CYP3A24) were assessed by fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular docking simulations. The PBDE concentrations in the sheep tissue and organ samples were 33.4–167 pg/g dw. The distribution of PBDEs in sheep organs and tissues is affected not only by the function of organs and tissues, but also by the characteristics of PBDEs. Adipose tissue tends to bioaccumulate more-brominated BDEs (BDE-154, -153, and -183), but muscle tissues and visceral organs mainly bioaccumulate less-brominated BDEs. The distribution of PBDEs in visceral organs is mainly affected by the transport of ovine serum albumin (OSA) and the metabolism of CYP3A24 enzyme. The distribution of PBDEs in adipose tissue and brain is mainly affected by their logKOW.

Characterization and Interpolation of Sediment Polychlorinated Biphenylsand Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethersin Resident Killer Whale Habitat along the Coast of British Columbia, Canada.

The northeastern Pacific northern and southern resident killer whale (Orcinus orca) populations are listed as threatened and endangered in Canada, respectively, with persistent, bioaccumulative contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), posing threats to their recovery. Concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in subtidal surface sediments collected from 97 sites along the British Columbia (BC) coast were used to identify their distribution and profiles, and to assess killer whale habitat quality. Victoria Harbour (VH3(site ID: 1) ) sediments exhibited the highest PCB and PBDE concentrations. For PCBs, PCB-138 was found at the highest concentration, followed by PCB-153, PCB-110, PCB-149, PCB-101, and PCB-118. For PBDEs, individual congeners were ranked as follows: BDE-209 > BDE-207 > BDE-206 > BDE-208 > BDE-47 > BDE-99. Principal component analyses (PCA) illustrated the variations in contaminant profiles, with PC1 for PCBs and PBDEs correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW , p < 0.003). Based on the PCA, sediment particle size, total organic carbon (TOC), and water depth at collection were other factors associated with the distribution of PBDEs, while PCB profiles were associated with TOC. Total PCB and PBDE concentrations at 100% and 34% of the sites, respectively, exceeded the recently adopted British Columbia's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy Working Sediment Quality Guidelines (PCBs 3.7 pg/g dry wt and PBDEs 1000 pg/g dry wt), considered protective of killer whales. Our findings suggest that the legacy of banned PCBs and PBDEs has the potential to constrain the recovery of killer whales as a result of their mobilization from sediments and consequent uptake by marine food webs. Key factors controlling colloids–bulk soil distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at an e-waste recycling site: Implications for PBDE mobility in subsurface environment

Accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in surface soils at elevated concentrations is common at e-waste recycling sites. Even though highly insoluble, migration of PBDEs into the vadose zone and groundwater is possible, due to their association with soil colloids. Here, we show that upon equilibration with artificial rainwater surface and subsurface soil samples collected at an e-waste recycling site release significant quantities of colloids, with the total concentrations of 14 PBDE congeners as high as 990 ng/g dw. The concentrations of different congeners vary markedly in the colloids, and that of BDE-209 is the highest in all the samples. Notably, even the colloids released from the soil collected at a depth of 95–105 cm contain high concentrations of PBDEs. Preferential binding of PBDEs to soil colloids is observed, with the colloids-soil distribution coefficients above 10 in certain cases. The extent of preferential binding displays no apparent correlation with the relative hydrophobicity of the PBDEs, nor can it be explained simply by considering the higher specific surface area, pore volume, and clay content of the soil colloids than the respective bulk soil. Principal component analysis shows that multiple soil properties are collectively responsible for the preferential distribution of PBDEs. Specifically, the differences in pore volume, soil organic carbon content, and pore size between colloids and soils are likely the major factors affecting the distribution of high-concentration PBDEs, whereas the differences in clay content, pore volume and specific surface area are the key factors affecting the distribution of low-concentration PBDEs. The findings clearly show that colloids are an important medium with which PBDEs are associated at contaminated sites, and underline the need of understanding colloid-facilitated transport of PBDEs at e-waste sites.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers from automobile microenvironment: Occurrence, sources, and exposure assessment

To investigate the level of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination in the automobile microenvironment, air and dust samples were collected from 15 family automobiles in Hangzhou City, China. The PBDE concentrations, distribution of congeners, and human exposure were determined; and the content and distribution of PBDEs in automotive interior materials were analyzed. The results revealed that the average and median concentrations of ∑14PBDEs in the air in automobiles were 732 and 695 pg/m3, respectively, whereas those in automotive dust were 4913 and 5094 ng/g, respectively. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) had the highest proportion, accounting for 61.3% and 88.8% of the ∑14PBDEs in the air and dust, respectively. The potential primary sources of PBDEs in automobile air and dust were volatile polyurethanes in seat covers and foot pads, respectively. Human exposure calculations revealed that infants and toddlers in cars were most exposed to air and dust, respectively. BDE-47 and -99 were the primary sources of health risks related to air and dust in cars.

Halogenated flame retardants in surface sediments from fourteen estuaries, South China

A total of seventy surface sediments were collected from fourteen estuaries of South China to investigate the distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis (2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE) and dechlorane plus (DP). The concentrations of Σ16PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE and DP in estuarine sediments ranged from 0.39 to 81.2, 0.18 to 49.9, not detected to 0.62, and 0.025 to 1.66 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Significant differences for levels of Σ16PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE and DP were found among the sediments from fourteen estuaries. Sediments from the Pearl River Estuary had the highest concentrations of Σ16PBDEs, DBDPE and DP. PBDEs and DBDPE were the main halogenated flame retardants in estuarine sediments. BDE 209 was predominant congener of PBDEs with an average contribution of 88.1% to the total PBDEs. 32.9% sediment samples from South China had fanti values lower than 0.65, suggesting that stereoselective enrichment of syn-DP occurred in estuarine sediments.

Occurrence and spatial distribution of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in seawater and sediment of the South China sea.

The occurrence and spatial distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in seawater and surficial sediment samples (N=19 and 45, respectively) from the South China Sea (SCS) in 2018 were investigated, and the correlation between BFRs and site parameters (total organic carbon, depth, etc.) were assessed by principal component analysis. The concentration ranges of ΣPBDEs in seawater and sediments were 0.90-4.40ng/L and 0.52-22.67ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively, while those of ΣNBFRs were 0.49-37.42ng/L and 0.78-82.29ng/g dw, respectively. BDE-209 and decabromodiphenyl ethane were the predominant BFRs, accounting for 38.65% and 36.94% in seawater and 26.71% and 68.42% in sediments, respectively. Notably, tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)isocyanurate and 2,4,6-tris(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine, seldomly detected in aquatic matrices worldwide, were detected for the first time in the study area, and their relatively high levels and detection frequencies indicate the ubiquitous application of these NBFRs in the Pearl River Delta. Zhuhai and Jiangmen are the main sources of NBFRs in the SCS. Preliminary risk assessment on NBFRs using hazard quotient indicates low to medium risks to marine organisms at some sites. The occurrence of NBFRs in the SCS highlights the prioritization of more toxicological information on these compounds.

Sediment Records of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) from the Anhui Province Section of Yangtze River, China.

This study investigated the temporal changes of PBDEs in the sediment cores from the Anhui Province section of Yangtze River (YR), China. The dramatic increase of ∑Br3-Br9-BDEs and BDE-209 concentrations in cores in the period of ca. 1990-2008 was consistent with the booming of regional and national production and consumption of household appliances and electronics. Following declines in BDE-209 and ∑Br3-Br9-BDEs concentrations can be associated with the deceasing use of legacy commercial PBDE mixtures in recent years. Compared with the different regions around the world, sediments in the YR were moderately polluted by PBDEs. The levels and the detection rates of BDE-209 were highest among the detected PBDEs single congener. The composition analysis indicated that Deca-BDE, Octa-BDE, and Penta-BDE were the dominant forms in the YR. The increasing trends of both BDE-209 and ∑Br3-Br9-BDEs in the YR during 1990s and 2000s largely reflected the time periods for transferring PBDE sources from the developed countries to China. TOC and finer particles were strongly correlated with distributions of PBDEs in sediments.

Sediment records of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in Yangtze River Delta of Yangtze River in China

The spatial and temporal distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in five sediment cores from the Yangtze River Delta of Yangtze River in China. The surficial concentrations of nine tri- through hepta-BDE congeners (Σ9BDEs) and BDE209 were highest at urban sites S3 and S2, followed by rural site S1 and estuary sites S5 and S4, respectively, based on dry sediment weight. Both BDE209 and ∑9BDE concentrations exponentially increased between 1990 and 2008. Commercial deca-BDE, penta-BDE, and octa-BDE products were likely PBDE sources in the study area. The relative abundances of BDE209 were higher in sediment cores from estuary than those from urban and rural locations, ascribing to the atmospheric transport from the adjacent densely populated northern and eastern coastal regions. This conclusion was further confirmed by the higher ratios of BDE47/BDE99 and BDE100/BDE99 in cores from the estuary than those from other locations.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in soils from Tianjin, North China: distribution, health risk, and temporal trends.

Available information is still insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of the global distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment. In particular, little is known about the changing trend of their distribution in urban soils. We conducted a survey of 21 PBDEs in urban soils from Tianjin, China. The chemicals were widely present in the area and summed concentrations ranged from 0.65 to 108ng/g in soil, indicating low to moderate levels of pollution relative to other areas. BDE-209 was the predominant congener, contributing 88.9% of the concentrations of total soil PBDEs. Source assessment indicated that soil PBDEs in the area were mainly derived from the release of commercial deca-BDE from local industrial production processes and consumer products. We found that the soil concentrations of PBDEs appear to have declined in recent years, compared with other previous reports in this region. However, more studies are needed on this possible change trend of PBDE pollution, especially its impact on human health, although their calculated non-carcinogenic health risks in this study were low.

Emission characteristics of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from the thermal disassembly of waste printed circuit boards

Thermal disassembly is prevalently applied for the removal of electronic components on waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), and temperature is an important factor influencing the pollutant emission process. The emission characteristics of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to the environment under thermal stress were investigated by conducting both bench-scale experiments and pilot-scale experiments over a temperature range from 100 to 260 °C. Bench-scale experiments showed that the emission factors (EFs) for ∑39PBDEs from WPCB powder were obviously higher than those from WPCB fragments. Mono-to tri-BDEs predominated the PBDEs emission at each temperature, and the EFs for the mono-to tri-BDEs from WPCB powder ranged from 232 to 3280 ng/g, respectively. Pilot-scale experiments were done to study the particulate matter (PM) and PBDEs emitted from WPCBs mounted with electronic components using a thermal disassembly machine. The mass of the PM and PBDEs released from WPCBs during heating increased with increasing temperature. A bimodal distribution pattern for the PM with peaks at diameters of 0.4–0.7 and 5.8–9.0 μm was observed. The values of the EFs for ∑39PBDEs varied from 6.41 to 674 ng/g, which were comparable with those calculated from WPCB fragments in the bench-scale experiments. The mass distribution of the ∑39PBDEs in the PM predominated in the size fraction of >9.0 μm and 0.7–1.1 μm at 100 and 260 °C, respectively. The highly brominated PBDEs (hexa- and hepta-BDEs) had a mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) greater than 2.5 μm, while the lightly brominated PBDEs (mono-to penta-BDEs) were mainly distributed in finer particles, with a MMAD of less than 2.5 μm. The particle size distribution of PBDEs was significantly correlated with the distribution of organic carbon (OC) in PM. All these results can provide basic data for gas pollution related to PBDEs and its control for electronic waste recycling.

Concentrations and distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in surface soils and tree bark in Inner Mongolia, northern China, and the risks posed to humans

Three functional zones, namely the industrial (IND), the agricultural (AGR), and the grassland (GRA) areas from Inner Mongolia (a remote province in northern China), were selected to evaluate the levels and distributions of PBDEs and the risks posed to local humans. PBDEs concentrations in surface soils and tree bark were detected and the air levels were estimated based on bark measurements. The total concentrations (∑8PBDEs) of BDE-28, -47, −100, −99, −154, −153, −183, and −209 in soils were 1.71–64.9 ng/g dry weight (d.w.), 0.720–4.08 ng/g d.w., and 0.604–3.76 ng/g d.w. in the IND, AGR and GRA areas respectively. The average total concentrations in bark and air were 0.792 ng/g d.w. and 0.125 ng/m³ in the AGR areas respectively, which were lower than those (1.69 ng/g d.w. in the bark and 0.476 ng/m³ in the air) in the IND areas. BDE-209 was the dominant congener, consistent with DeBDE being the dominant commercial products used in China. However, except for BDE-209, BDE-28 and BDE-47 in the AGR and GRA areas averagely contributed about half of the total PBDEs concentrations in soils. BDE-28 concentrations in the bark samples of the AGR areas were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in the IND areas, and the average total hazard quotients (∑8PBDEs) were higher for humans in the AGR areas (0.12) than in the IND areas (0.08). Degradation of higher-brominated congeners (e.g., BDE-209) and migration of lower-brominated congeners (mainly BDE-28 and BDE-47) may increase the risks to humans in pristine areas.

Levels and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in humans and environmental compartments: a comprehensive review of the last five years of research.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), present in the environment, animals, and humans. Their levels, distribution, and human exposure have been studied extensively, and over the last decade, various legal measures have been taken to prohibit or minimize their production and use due to the increasing amount of evidence of their harmful effects on human and animal health.Our aim here was to make a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the levels and distribution of PBDEs in the aquatic environment, air, and soil, in indoor dust, and in humans. To fulfill this, we searched through Web of Science for literature data reported in the last five years (2015-2019) on levels of at least six key PBDE congeners in abovementioned matrices. According to our summarized data, significant PBDE mass concentrations/fractions are still being detected in various sample types across the world, which implies that PBDE contamination is an ongoing problem. Secondary sources of PBDEs like contaminated soils and landfills, especially those with electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), represent a particular risk to the future and therefore require a special attention of scientists.

Occurrence, Distribution, Source, and Health Risk Assessment of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Surface Soil from the Shen-Fu Region, Northeast China

The Shen-Fu region is an important urban area in northeast China. We report on a study of the distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in representative topsoil from this region. In the summer of 2016, 72 soil samples from three cities (Shenyang, Fushun, and Shen-Fu New City) were collected, which covered four land use types:urban, rural residential, cultivated, and woodland. We report on the concentrations, compositions, and distributions of 14 PBDEs in soil and explore their sources, and additionally undertake human exposure analysis and health risk assessments. The results showed that the concentration of ∑14PBDEs in the topsoil ranged from 0.279-50.719 ng·g-1(dry weight), with a mean of (10.466±9.246) ng·g-1. The concentrations of PBDEs was ranked for the cities as:Fushun > Shenyang > Shen-Fu New City > background, and for different land use types as:urban land > rural residential land > cultivated land > forest. Deca-PBDE had the highest proportion of all congeners, accounting for 81.25%-89.23% of all PBDEs. Source analysis indicated that commercial Deca-PBDE was the main source, contributing 66.06% of the total Deca-PBDE according to principal component analysis/multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR). Among five different age groups assessed for exposure, children in Fushun had the highest exposure dose:(20.98±25.01) ng·(kg·d)-1. In terms of different land types, the highest exposure dose was for children living in urban areas:(18.54±20.27) ng·(kg·d)-1. The non-oncogenic health risks in the Shen-Fu region are of a relatively low level.

Distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in Newfoundland seafood and associations with human serum thyroid hormone concentrations

Newfoundland has a long history of fishing and of consuming local seafood, therefore exposure to PBDEs through local seafood consumption could present a widespread health issue for the province. The aim of this study was to explore local seafood consumption as a possible PBDE exposure source in Newfoundland. Cod and turbot livers from Newfoundland were tested for PBDEs by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Eighty residents from two communities on the north and south coasts of the island were surveyed for local seafood consumption, and tested for serum PBDE concentrations (GC-MS). ∑PBDE (28, 47, 99, 156, and 209) levels were higher in cod (38.7 ng/g) than in turbot (10.4 ng/g). ∑PBDEs from fish livers from the north (37.36 ng/g) and south (34.27 ng/g) coast of Newfoundland were not significantly different. Newfoundland residents consumed local cod more than any other species, and older participants ate more cod than younger participants (p=0.000). Participant serum concentrations of PBDEs were 0.03 mmol/g (PBDE-28), 1.04 mmol/g (PBDE-47), 0.03 mmol/g (PBDE-99), 0.40 mmol/g (PBDE-100), 2.99 mmol/g (PBDE-153) and 4.78 mmol/g (∑PBDEs). Concentrations of PBDE-153 (p=0.018) and ∑PBDEs (28, 33, 47, 99, 100, and 153; p=0.010) were positively associated with local cod consumption. Residents of the island Newfoundland show evidence pf PBDE exposure, with possible local seafood consumption as a source. Associations between seafood consumption and PBDE levels were found, but associations were congener-specific. Further studies are needed using larger population in other parts of the province, and exploring other possible sources of exposure.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have attracted increasing attention in recent decades because of their persistence, distribution, bioaccumulation, and biotoxicity in the environment. In the present study, the levels and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBBs) in twenty-four samples of twelve fish species collected from the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) were analyzed. The results indicated that ∑PBDE concentrations in fish muscle ranged from 22.62 pg g -1 by wet weight (ww) (yellowcheek carp) to 217.75 pg g -1 ww (yellow catfish). BDE47 and BDE209 were the most predominant congeners, with their sum accounted for 23.62–68.16% of ∑PBDEs. ∑PBB concentrations ranged from 27.83 pg g -1 ww (silver carp) to 155.75 pg g -1 ww (topmouth culter); BB49 and BB209 were detected in all samples, with concentrations ranging from 4.62 to 47.10 pg g -1 ww and 1.29 to 80.95 pg g -1 ww, respectively. There are no significant correlations between the BFRs levels and fish length (or weight) in these samples. Compared to other areas, the level of BFRs in edible fishes from TGR was low.

Contamination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in watershed sediments and plants adjacent to e-waste sites.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are one of the persistent toxic organic pollutants in watersheds near electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) sites (EWS). Spatial redistribution, translocation and bioaccumulation of PBDEs in natural sediment-plant ecosystems, however, are still unclear. The contamination and distribution of PBDEs in core sediments and wetland plants from two EWS and two mangrove forest sites (MFS) were investigated. The eight PBDE congeners were all detected in plant tissue and sediment samples, indicating PBDE contamination was common and severe, and their spatial variations were significant. Although sediments from EWS had higher PBDE concentrations than those in MFS, with an extremely high value of 36392 ± 5992 ng g-1 dw, mangroves could be the sink of PBDEs, as high concentrations (327 ± 48 ng g-1 dw) were also detected in mangrove sediments. The historical usage of PBDEs was reflected by their distribution in mangrove sediment core but not so in e-waste sediment core. PBDEs were taken up and accumulated in six wetland plants, with more accumulation in mangrove plants. These results demonstrated that PBDEs were not only contaminated in sediments adjacent to e-waste sites but also plant tissues. PBDEs could enter other environments via plant littering and/or herbivorous processes that must not be neglected.
