Role of climate change on Oriental spruce (Picea orientalis L.): Modeling and mapping

Global climate change is a process with dramatic consequences for ecosystems, and changes that may occur in the potential distribution of plant communities especially draw attention. This study aimed to reveal the potential distribution modeling and mapping of the Oriental spruce (Picea orientalis L.), distributed in a limited area, using current and future (year 2100) climate scenarios in Turkey. The maximum entropy method for potential distribution and Chelsa V2.1 technical specification IPSL-CM6A-LR scenarios (SSP126-SSP370-SSP585) were preferred to reveal the effect of climate change. Results for the current were in the “excellent” category with training and test data AUC 0.981 and 0.977, respectively. The variables contributing to the model were the precipitation amount of the driest month, mean diurnal air temperature range, annual precipitation amount, and mean annual air temperature. Variables contributing to the current model were analysed using the SSP126, SSP370, and SSP585 scenarios of the year 2100. It was assessed that the potential distribution for 2100 decreases according to SSP126, was fragmented according to SSP370, and decreased according to the SSP585 scenario. As a result, the authors determined that the high potential distribution is reduced 61% when the current mapping of Oriental spruce is compared with the SSP585 mapping.

Spatial distribution of woody plants in relation to mistletoe-infected Vachellia karroo trees in a semi-arid African savanna

By increasing resource heterogeneity, mistletoe-infected trees can restructure plant community processes and distribution patterns. No information is available on how mistletoe-infected Vachellia (Acacia) karroo trees within V. karroo dominated stands are spatially distributed, and on how they influence the spatial patterns of their surrounding conspecifics and heterospecifics. Each woody plant was stem mapped using a cartesian plane (x, y) within three 50×50 m plots located in V. karroo dominated stands in a semi-arid savanna, South West Zimbabwe. Pair correlations g(r) were used for the univariate analysis and Poisson process null models were applied to quantify and detect overall departure from randomness. For the bivariate analysis, pair correlations g12(r) under the null model of independence were used, whilst the mark correlation function (kmm(r)) was used to analyse the correlation of tree canopy area and mistletoe infection intensity. For each plot, size class distributions, based on tree height and basal stem diameter displayed negative J curves, with steep negative regression slopes across the size classes, clearly indicating a strongly recruiting population of V. karroo. The univariate patterns of all trees (infected and non-infected) were consistent with a random pattern, which is attributed to unsystematic mistletoe seed dispersal by birds. The univariate analysis of all woody plants (adults and juveniles) exhibited aggregation at small spatial scales due to the high abundance of clustered seedlings and saplings. At small spatial scales, understory woody plants (both conspecifics and non-conspecifics) were positively associated with mistletoe-infected trees due to mistletoephily which is the facilitation (or nurse protégé interactions) within the more resource-rich mistletoe-infected tree subcanopies. These results provide strong evidence suggesting that the variations in spatial pattern modification by mistletoe-infected trees could further increase spatial heterogeneity in this semi-arid savanna. As such, by increasing heterogeneity, mistletoe-infected trees can increase the resilience of semi-arid savannas in the face of perturbations and stochastic events.

Predicted changes in distribution and grazing value of Stipa-based plant communities across the Eurasian steppe

The Eurasian steppe is one of the world's largest continuous areas of grassland and has an important role in supporting livestock grazing, the most ubiquitous land use on Earth. However, the Eurasian steppe is under threat, from irrational grazing utilization, climate change, and resource exploitation. We used an ensemble modeling approach to predict the current and future distribution of Stipa-dominated plant communities in three important steppe subregions; the Tibetan Alpine, Central Asian, and Black Sea-Kazakhstan subregions. We combined this with an assessment of the grazing value of 22 Stipa species, the dominant grassland species in the area, to predict how grazing value might change under future climate change predictions. We found that the effects of changing climates on grazing values differed across the three subregions. Grazing values increased in the Tibetan alpine steppe and to a lesser extent in Central Asia, but there were few changes in the Black Sea-Kazakhstan subregion. The response of different species to changing climates varied with environmental variables. Finally, our trait-based assessment of Stipa species revealed variations in grazing value, and this had major effects on the overall grazing value of the region. Our results reinforce the importance of trait-based characteristics of steppe plant species, how these traits affect grazing value, and how grazing values will change across different areas of the Eurasian steppe. Our work provides valuable insights into how different species will respond to changing climates and grazing, with important implications for sustainable management of different areas of the vast Eurasian steppe ecosystem.

Effects of Abiotic Factors on Plant Community Composition and Functional Traits in the Liaohe Estuary

The composition and functional traits of plant communities and their changes along an environmental gradient are important bases for maintaining the carbon sinks of estuarine wetlands. To clarify the succession pattern of plant community in an estuary along an environmental gradient, this study considered the Liaohe Estuary wetland as the research object and divided the dominant plant community into a Phragmites australis community and high-, medium-, and low-density Suaeda salsa communities. We employed redundancy analysis, variance decomposition, and multiple regression to examine the impact of an environmental gradient on the functional traits and spatial distributions of plant communities in the Liaohe Estuary wetland. The findings revealed that as the elevation decreased, the soil salinity increased and the water content decreased. The distribution of plant communities followed the order of P. australis, high-density S. salsa, medium-density S. salsa, low-density S. salsa, and bare flat areas. When the soil salinity exceeded 21 g/kg and the soil moisture content was below 17%, the conditions were no longer suitable for the growth of S. salsa or P. australis. Soil salinity, total nitrogen content, clay content, and elevation were the most critical environmental factors affecting the functional traits of the plant communities. Soil biochemical characteristics, soil texture, and the physical environment accounted for 28.9%, 23.12%, and 11.51%, respectively, of the variation in the spatial distribution of plant communities. The proportions of the suitable area for the high-, medium-, and low-density S. salsa were 13.1%, 53.78%, and 33.12%, respectively. The results provide a theoretical basis for further elucidating the degradation mechanisms of estuarine wetlands, developing an evaluation index system for estuarine wetland ecological restoration, and optimizing ecological protection and restoration strategies.

Plant communities on inselbergs in Burkina Faso

The safeguarding and sustainable management of natural resources, particularly plant resources, requires the implementation of conservation strategies. The study of plant communities is an essential tool for monitoring the development of plant formations. The aim of this study was to identify the plant communities on inselbergs of Burkina Faso in West Africa, to provide a database to supporting the sustainable management of the plant resources withing these fragile ecosystems. Stratified and random sampling was carried out on selected inselbergs in different parts of Burkina Faso along a climatic gradient. In the different phytogeographical sectors, inselbergs consist of granite or sandstone. Plant surveys were conducted using 900 m2 plots for the woody stratum and 100 m2 plots for the herbaceous stratum. An exhaustive list of plant species was compiled and an abundance-dominance coefficient for each species was determined. A DCA, through PCord.6, was used to obtain preliminary groups. Indicator species were determined by a Monte Carlo test with p < 0.05 and calculation of the fidelity index (Phi). Diversity indices through the Shannon index and equitability of Pielou were calculated using Pcord.6 to compare plant communities. A total of 12 plant communities were identified for the inselbergs of Burkina Faso, including 9 communities for savannah and 3 communities for monocotyledonous-mats and ephemeral flush vegetation. The main ecological factors governing the distribution of these inselberg plant communities were found to be were found to be climate, soil depth, soil moisture and altitude. In savannah plant communities, the Terminalia laxiflora and Tephrosia nana communities (unit 6) had the highest number (13) of diagnostic species and the highest fidelity (Phi = 0.97) was for Cleome viscosa species in the Acacia tortilis and Aristida kerstingii communities (unit 1). Diagnostic species numbers vary from 6 to 4 in monocotyledonous-mats and ephemeral flush vegetation and the Dopatrium longidens (Phi = 0.76) and Cyperus podocarpus (Phi = 0.75) have the highest fidelity to unit 3. The Shannon diversity index of deep soil plant communities was highest and significantly different from that of the other savannah communities. Concerning the Piélou equitability index, high values were found in all plant groups, reflecting the absence of species dominance and a balance of the different plant groups.Floristically, Afrotrilepis pilosa infestation of inselbergs is common in West Africa. In Burkina Faso, in addition to Afrotrilepis pilosa, 10 other plant species are found specifically on inselbergs. Given the fragility of the ecosystems in which they live, these inselberg species should be protected.

Fertility islands, keys to the establishment of plant and microbial diversity in a highly alkaline hot desert

The distribution of plant communities in hot desert ecosystems is discontinuous and resembles the pattern of heterogeneous resource patches, known as “fertility islands”. Understanding the key factors that allow plants to establish in these conditions, as well as their associated microbial diversity, is crucial to the comprehension and preservation of these ecosystems. Saudi Arabia in the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the driest regions in the world, with a very low water regime and low soil nutrient contents. The establishment of ecosystems in these arid desert conditions is therefore subject to numerous constraints. Understanding the biotic and abiotic factors linked to the formation of fertility islands, from the perspective of soil composition and its associated microbiome, both in the soil and in the roots of associated plant community, is therefore a fundamental issue for the preservation of these ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed the soil composition between a fertility island and bare soil. The proportions of micro- and macro-elements important for plant nutrition, namely magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and iron were higher in the fertility island. We also observed that soil bacterial and fungal diversity increased in the fertility island. Key taxa such as Rhizobia and Glomeraceae which play important roles in ecosystem functioning were identified in both the fertility island soil and in the roots of the established plant community. These results confirm that plant establishment is linked to soil conditions, in line with the fertility island hypothesis, and that the microbial community in the fertility island differs both in diversity and in composition from that of the bare soil. Fertility islands soils and the roots of established plant community harbor a microbiome potentially crucial to ecosystem functioning, and are of major interest for conservation and agronomy programs.

Early-melting snowpatch plant communities are transitioning into novel states

Snowpatch plant community distribution and composition are strongly tied to the duration of long-lasting snow cover in alpine areas; they are vulnerable to global climatic changes that result in warmer temperatures and longer growing seasons. We used a revisitation study to quantify early-melting snowpatch floristic and functional diversity change in southern Australia, and document shrub size-class distributions over time to detect evidence for their encroachment into snowpatches, a key prediction with climatic change. Early-melting snowpatch vegetation has declined in areal extent, changed in species composition, and shrub and tussock grass cover has increased, but changes in functional trait diversity were less clear. Species gains, particularly by non-clonal species, accounted for most of the floristic change observed. Shrub recruitment was ongoing by most shrub species. Biotic differentiation is occurring; many early-melting snowpatches are transitioning to a novel state with changed composition and taller vegetation structure, but there is little evidence for species loss having occurred. Given enough time, however, the long-term loss of species is likely (i.e. biotic homogenisation) if taller shrubs outcompete short-statured snowpatch species. Our results provide evidence that this alpine ecosystem is forming a novel community with an uncertain future.

Prospects for the Preservation of the Main Pinus sylvestris L. Ecotypes in Poland in the Context of the Habitat Conditions of Their Occurrence

This study investigates the prospects for preserving the main Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) ecotypes in Poland, considering the habitat conditions of their occurrence. Scots pine is known for its wide distribution and natural adaptability to various habitats. However, there is an increasing vulnerability of pine forests to damage from biotic factors and a decrease in natural regeneration, particularly in areas under legal protection. Additionally, projected climate change has raised concerns about the future of Pinus sylvestris, placing it in the “losing” group of tree species. The aim of the study was to analyze the habitat conditions of the seven main selected Pinus sylvestris L. ecotypes to assess the sustainability of pine stands in their natural habitat conditions. Out of the seven populations of studied pine ecotypes, only one grows under conditions representing a typical form of pine forest (Leucobryo–Pinetum plant association). Two populations grow under conditions corresponding to potential deciduous forests (Galio sylvatici–Carpinetum and Calamagrostio arundinaceae–Quercetum petraeae). The remaining populations represent potentially mixed oak–pine forests. Such a distribution of plant communities, except for Leucobryo–Pinetum, does not guarantee the continuity of the studied pine stands as a result of their natural regeneration. Therefore, it is necessary to preserve the offspring of the studied populations outside their occurrence sites, but the studied pine stands should be preserved until their natural death in their natural habitats. In the conducted research, the NDVI turned out to be very useful, showing a high correlation with the trophicity of habitat expressed in the diversity of plant communities, as well as with the height and diameter of the studied stands.

Biodiversity and Indigenous Medicinal Knowledge of North-East India: Navigating Climate Change Impacts on Medicinal Plants for Conservation and Advancement -

The northeastern region of India holds the sixth position among the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots, covering approximately 8% of the nation's total land area, which amounts to 262,060 square kilometers. Situated in the eastern Himalayas, any alterations in this biodiversity-rich area can have significant and far-reaching consequences. Indigenous tribes of this region believe in the remarkable healing properties of certain medicinal plants, and within its diverse population of around 225 communities, each tribal and sub-tribal group possesses distinct traditional knowledge. Capturing and harnessing this indigenous wisdom by scientists and researchers could unlock new avenues for progress, particularly within the pharmaceutical sector. Climate change stands as one of the paramount global environmental challenges. Predictions indicate that by the close of the 21st century, the Earth's average temperature might rise by anywhere between 0.3 to 4.8 °C, accompanied by a potential sea level increase of 26 to 82 cm. These climate shifts could have adverse effects on the abundance and accessibility of medicinal plants, potentially leading to species extinction. Moreover, the impact of climate change could extend beyond availability to also encompass alterations in the pharmacological properties of various plants, particularly those found in alpine environments. This discussion underscores the importance of existing knowledge, critical analyses, challenges, opportunities, and the immense value of medicinal plants. It emphasizes the intersection of changing climate and the vulnerability of medicinal plant resources, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of these effects in the context of the North Eastern region of India. To address these challenges, there is a pressing need for in-depth research on the geographical distribution of plant communities and strategies to enhance the secondary synthesis of critically endangered medicinal plants under the current climate change scenarios.

Floristic composition and plant community distribution along environmental gradients in Guard dry Afromontane forest of Northwestern Ethiopia

BackgroundDry evergreen montane forests of Ethiopia provide economic and ecological services for the community but it is under several threats of natural and anthropogenic disturbances. The study aimed to investigate the floristic composition, species diversity, and plant community distribution of Guard forest along environmental gradients.MethodsA systematic sampling technique was used to collect vegetation and environmental data. Fifty eight plots each with 400 m2 (20 m X 20 m) were established for trees and shrubs and 2 m x2m (4 m2) for herbs along eleven transect lines. Shannon Weiner diversity index and evenness were used to assess the species diversity and richness. The similarities among plant communities were computed using Sorenson’s similarity index. The plant community types and vegetation-environment relationships were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis and Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) in R software, respectively.ResultsA total of 137 plant species belonging to 111 genera and 55 families were identified. The most dominant families in the study area were Fabaceae and Asteraceae. Among the total plant species documented in the forest, 42(30.65%) were trees, 36 (26.28%) were shrubs, 48(35.04%) were herbs, and 11 (8.03%) were climbers. Of the total species, 14(10.22%) species are endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea. Three plant community types were identified by cluster analysis. The Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index was 3.39 and evenness was 0.87 for the forest. The pattern of plant species distribution was significantly influenced by altitude, pH, BD, slope, and charcoal (P < 0.05).ConclusionGuard forest has good species diversity and richness, and supports different endemic plant species that show the potential of the area to support useful but some of the characteristics species are not found in the forest and others are rare in their existence due to the presence of disturbances and need immediate conservation to ensure sustainable use and management of the forest.

Stoichiometric characteristics and homeostasis of leaf nitrogen and phosphorus responding to different water surface elevations in hydro-fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir

As a type of wetland ecosystem with off-season 30 m water level fluctuation, the huge changes in the ecological environment, plant species, and vegetation dynamics in the hydro-fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area have attracted a wide range of attention. In this present study, six typical locations in the water level fluctuating zone were used as the research objects, and the effects of different water surface elevations on the stoichiometric characteristics and homeostasis of leaf nitrogen and phosphorus were studied through a sample survey method. Results revealed that leaf nitrogen content was linearly correlated with leaf phosphorus content along water surface elevation. And water surface elevation significantly affected the nitrogen and phosphorus content of dominant plants. Four dominant species [Cynodon dactylon (Linn.) Pers, Xanthium sibiricum Partin ex Wider, Abutilon theophrasti Medik, and Bidens pilosa Linn] exhibited specific differences in the phosphorus steady state index (Hp) and nitrogen steady state index (HN). Although belonging to different categories, both HP and HN of four dominant species were in the same order: X. sibiricum > A. theophrasti > C. dactylon > B. Pilosa. The interspecific differences in HN and HP indicated that there were differences in the characteristics of nutrient utilization of dominant species and their adaption to water surface elevation. Furthermore, as the elevation increases, the community coverage increased and the community stability index also increased. This might indicate that in the fluctuating zone habitat, the plant’s nitrogen and phosphorus utilization strategy affects the distribution and composition of plant community along water surface elevation, and ultimately affects the stoichiometric homeostasis on the community levels.

Native and non‐native plant regrowth in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area after the 2018 Woolsey Fire

AbstractMediterranean‐type ecosystems are under chronic ecological stress. By assessing changes in plant species and functional groups across the landscape, identifying ecosystem degradation is possible. The Santa Monica Mountains are in close proximity to a densely populated urban area where non‐native species invasions are being driven by changing fire regimes, climate change, and anthropogenic disturbances. Non‐native growth impacts biodiversity levels and vegetation distributions of native plant communities that are critical for ecosystem health. This study uses analyses of line‐point data from the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program to assess ecosystem health in the Santa Monica Mountains from 2014 to 2020 and, in particular, to assess the effects of the 2018 Woolsey Fire on the balance of native and non‐native species in the region. Results of this analysis show an increase in non‐native cover since 2014 and rapid regrowth of non‐native annual grasses and herbaceous cover after the 2018 Woolsey Fire while native communities regrew more slowly. A hotspot of non‐native cover was identified in the Northern Simi Hills region, and rapid regrowth was seen after the Woolsey Fire. The hotspot is dominated by non‐native annual grasses and annual herbaceous species, some of which returned to prefire populations within a year after the Woolsey Fire. These results raise concerns for the future of native vegetation composition and function throughout the park and highlight the damage densely populated non‐native plant communities accumulate in the wake of disturbance events.

Spatial Distribution of Vegetation on Stream Bars and the Riparian Zone Reflects Successional Pattern Due to Fluid Dynamics of River

The river is a dynamic space where erosion, transportation, and sedimentation are constantly occurring due to running water. This study aims to reveal the change in geomorphology caused by the flow characteristics of water in rivers and the response of vegetation to that. This study was carried out by clarifying the spatially appearing successional trends in the vegetation established in the stream bars and the riparian zones, which are located on different topographic conditions based on the vegetation profile, ordination result, and species diversity. The spatial distribution of vegetation on the stream bars tended to appear in the order of annual plant-, perennial plant-, and tree-dominated stands from the upstream toward a downstream direction (a gravel bar and a sand bar in a mountain gravel-bed river and an estuary, respectively) or the reversed one (a sand bar in a lowland river). The spatial distribution of vegetation on the riparian zones tended to appear in the order of annual plant-, perennial plant-, and tree-dominated stands from the waterfront toward the bank direction. Changes in species composition also differed depending on the spatial location, showing a similar trend to the spatial distribution of vegetation. Species diversity became higher in proportion to the longevity of the dominant species of each vegetation type. In conclusion, the longitudinal distribution pattern of vegetation on the stream bars resembles the lateral distribution of riparian vegetation, and the successional trends follow the spatial distribution pattern. These results suggest that the dynamics of bed loading, an allogenic process, may be an important determinant of the spatial distribution and succession of plant communities in dynamic riverine environments.

Effects of Environmental and Disturbance Factors on Plant Community Distribution in Tropical Moist Afromontane Forests, South-West Ethiopia

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of environmental and disturbance factors on plant community distribution in the Majang Forest Biosphere Reserve (MFBR) in south-west Ethiopia. A systematic sample design was conducted to collect vegetation and environmental factors in four study sites. In a nested plot design, the vegetation data were collected from 140 main plots, i.e., 400 m2 (trees), 25 m2 subplots (shrubs, lianas, seedlings, and saplings), and 1 m2 (herbs), respectively. The plant community classification was performed using agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis (Ward’s Linkage method) in R software (version 4.0.1). The distribution of plant communities along an environmental gradient was computed using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). In this study, a total of 15 (9.5%) endemic plant species were recorded in MFBR. Four plant community types were identified, and these were Celtis zenkeri-Blighia unijugata, Pouteria altissima-Lecaniodiscus fraxinifolius, Antiaris toxicaria-Celtis toka, and Dracaena afromontana-Cyathea manniana. Environmental and disturbance factors, such as elevations, slopes, harvesting indexes, soil pH, silt, and herbaceous cover, were the most important for determining plant community distribution in the area. Elevation and slope were found to have a significant ( P &lt; 0.05 ) negative and positive relationship with species diversity and richness, respectively. Therefore, the finding of this study provides baseline information that could be necessary for making further conservation and management in MFBR.

Spontaneous urban vegetation as an indicator of soil functionality and ecosystem services

AbstractQuestionsOur study focused on spontaneous vegetation in urban greenspaces in a Mediterranean city with the aim of relating plant community properties with ecological services along soil disturbance gradients. We asked which plant communities have the greatest plant biodiversity and soil carbon storage and the best‐performing nutrient cycles and water regulation.LocationMadrid City (Central Spain).MethodsWe studied four types of plant communities following soil disturbance gradients: vegetation on trampled soils, roadside vegetation, annual grasslands and perennial forbs. Regarding vegetation, we studied plant composition and productivity, plant diversity, plant growth forms and functional groups. Regarding soils, we determined soil organic carbon (TOC), available nutrients, the activity of seven enzymes relating to the main macronutrient cycles, and physical properties such as bulk density (BD) and soil water‐holding capacity (WHC). We used one‐way ANOVA to determine the influence of the plant community type on both soil and vegetation variables. Canonical correspondence analysis was performed to interpret the relationships between plant species assemblages with environmental gradients.ResultsPerennial forbs showed greater biomass and developed on soils with the greatest TOC and available phosphorus. Annual grasslands displayed the highest plant diversity. Roadside vegetation developed on soils with higher phenoloxidase activity when compared to vegetation on trampled soils and annual grasslands. Vegetation on trampled soils developed on soils with lower WHC, lower beta‐glucosidase, arylamidase and phosphatase activities and higher BD when compared to perennial forbs. Plant community distribution followed gradients most significantly associated with soil organic matter content, soil compaction and nutrient cycling performance.ConclusionsWe conclude that plant communities are good indicators of ecosystem function and services which are unevenly distributed throughout urban habitats. The management in Mediterranean unmaintained urban greenspaces should be aimed at avoiding soil compaction to promote biodiversity, carbon storage and water regulation.

RGB vs. Multispectral imagery: Mapping aapa mire plant communities with UAVs

Plant communities of mires can be linked to important ecological processes, such as carbon storage and gas fluxes. As indicators of ecosystem dynamics, knowledge about their distribution and condition can support ecosystem assessment. Mapping mire vegetation enables monitoring at ecosystem-scale, which can be done with UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Depending on the mounted sensor and the spectral signals recorded, various attributes of plant communities can be retrieved. However, it is uncertain to what extent plant communities can be derived, as mapping vegetation on detailed level remains challenging due to overlapping spectral signatures of plant species. Advancing technology offers the choice between low cost RGB and multispectral sensors as well as a variety of classification methods to overcome these challenges. Therefore, we used K-means unsupervised classification and Random Forest supervised classification with different input variables to map microtopographical patterns and plant communities of two aapa mires as resolved by hierarchical clustering. This extensive approach allowed the assessment of both classifier’s strength and weaknesses, as well as the criteria of selecting suitable input data. UAV- RGB and multispectral imagery with associated spectral and topographical indices of both 0.05 m and 0.30 m spatial resolution were used for the K-means method. We assessed the relationship between these generated spectral classes and plant community clusters. The clusters further served as training and validation labels for to classify the high resolution, multispectral UAV-data (0.05 m) using Random Forest. Our study demonstrates that maps reflecting microtopograpical patterns and a wetness gradient can be produced with low-cost RGB imagery and unsupervised classification. Despite this linkage to plant communities, enhanced and detailed maps of plant community distribution can only be achieved with multispectral data and robust machine learning techniques. Random forest classifications showed good overall accuracies (0.59 – 0.82) in mapping microtopographical patterns and plant communities based on hierarchical clustering of vegetation data. While the strength of both classifiers lies in the distinction of bog hummock communities, classification performance was weaker between different transition and lawn community types. Casual misclassifications occurred also for communities along the transition of microtopographical patterns. The main obstacle for accurate mapping remains the overlap of spectral signatures from species and spectral noise originating from wetness in mires that lead to misclassification. Future studies addressing plant community and diversity mapping should therefore consider the origin of spectral variation with further sensors.

The effect of the edaphic factors on the halophytic plant communities’ distribution in Yeşilırmak coastal wetlands (Türkiye)

In this research, Juncus acutus and Salicornia perennans communities which have different floristic composition and are developing on soils with different salinity degree in Yeşilırmak Delta were investigated. The phytosociological properties of the communities were analyzed by Braun–Blanquet method. The effect of edaphic parameters on the communities was determined using ordination techniques (CCA). Galatello pannonicae–Juncetum acuti ass. nov. develops on soils with high EC, while Samolo valerandi–Juncetum acuti Korkmaz et al. Ekoloji 21:64–79, 2012 and Spergulario marinae–Salicornietum perennantis ass. nov. develop on soils which have relatively low EC value. Consequently, the edaphic factors showing variation depending on microtopography have affected the plant community distribution in Yeşilırmak coastal wetland sites.

Littoral phytocenoses of marshes located in different tidal conditions of the White Sea

This paper describes the distribution of plant communities from various associations, identified from the standpoint of the ecological-phytocenotic approach, occupying the tidal flat of low and medium marshes, which are under the influence of tide range, different values of pH and water salinity. According to the degree of pH influence, we identified acidotrophic, alkalotrophic, and indifferent phytocenoses, combined into different associations. Most associations of the estuaries with different tide range are alkalotrophic, there are noticeably fewer acidotrophic ones; a few eurytopic communities from the Phragmitetum australis, Bolboschoenetum maritimae, and Caricetum aquatilis associations are classified as indifferent. The study shows that the coastal vegetation of the marshes of the mesotidal estuaries of the White Sea develops in stable pH conditions in the range from 7.2 to 7.6. The formation of coastal vegetation is less stable in the macrotidal estuaries of the Mezen Bay, most of them form at pH = 7.0-8.3. Halophyte vegetation forms in the widest range of pH (6.2-8.3) in the marshes of microtidal estuaries in the Dvina Bay of the White Sea, which are more affected by floods than other estuaries. The halophytic vegetation of the White Sea develops in a wide range of salinity fluctuations from brackish to marine waters. However, the majority of plant associations in the rivers estuaries occupy the habitats of weakly saline waters with 10 to 25% salinity.

Soil properties and floristic community distribution within a deeply weathered landscape within a biodiversity hotspot of Western Australia

AimsThis study aims to identify some of the key soil-related factors that underpin the distribution of plant communities and provide a more comprehensive understanding of an old, climatically buffered infertile landscape including kwongkan habitats. We investigate the pedological, topographical and hydrological correlates of abundance and floristic community distribution within the Alison Baird Reserve, a floristically diverse, old and climatically weathered landscape in south-west Western Australia.MethodsFifty-four soil samples were collected across 0.165 km2 and analysed for a range of physical and chemical properties. Samples were taken from the topsoil and subsurface, and a combination of statistical and geostatistical methods were used to examine soil–plant community distribution relationships.ResultsElevation, sub-surface moisture, electrical conductivity and clay content were the most important factors in determining vegetation composition and distribution; with sub-surface properties varying more between floristic communities and correlating more strongly than topsoil factors. Associations between soil nutrients (Phosphorus, Nitrogen, Carbon) and community distributions were not as significant as expected, likely due to the depleted nature of the soil system.ConclusionThe significance of soil parameters including particle size, moisture, elevation, water repellence and depth to water table suggests that water availability and retention within the soil is a key correlate of the distribution of floristic communities at the site and may act as a pathway to explain large scale variation in plant communities across the south-west of Western Australia. This understanding will help conservation and management of areas with such high biodiversity including relocation of endangered flora.
