First report of the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) in Greece

AbstractPhenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, 1898 (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), commonly known as the cotton mealybug or solenopsis mealybug, is a highly polyphagous species. This paper provides the first report of this species in Greece. It was detected in high numbers on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants cultivated in a greenhouse in the region of Mirtos, close to the city of Ierapetra in the Southeast part of the island of Crete. The species identification was carried out using morphological and molecular analyses. The fact that P. solenopsis can be transferred easily via trade of live plant material, in combination with its ability to affect many different hosts causing severe damage, constitutes an increasing threat to Greek cultivation and especially to horticultural and vegetable crops. Additional surveys should be conducted to investigate the species distribution in Greece.

Activities of antioxidant enzymes and Hsp levels in response to elevated temperature in land snail species with varied latitudinal distribution.

Land snails occupy a variety of habitats, with differing temperature and humidity regimes and exhibit a wide span of adaptations, to withstand abiotic condition changes. The present work's aim was to examine the correlation of habitat's thermal adversity in different Mediterranean type habitats with the land snail's antioxidant and heat shock responses. For this purpose, snails of different species from populations along a north-south axis from the islands and mainland of Greece were exposed to elevated temperature and antioxidant enzyme activities, and Hsp70 and Hsp90 levels were determined in their tissues. The ATP, ADP, and AMP levels and the adenylate energy charge (AEC) were also determined. The comparison of protein levels and enzymatic activities across time intervals revealed significant differences for all factors examined. While the gradation pattern over time for a given factor was similar in all populations the absolute values over time differed. Catalase activity and the Hsp90 protein levels had the higher contribution in separating the different species and populations, followed by the activity of glutathione reductase and Hsp70 protein levels which contributed to a lesser degree. In general, populations from the southern part of their distribution in Greece tend to display a faster increase than northern populations in induction levels of all factors examined. Our data seem to be in line with the concept of preparation for oxidative stress (POS) while the changes in the AEC indicate an early preparation to cover the energy demand for the induction and synthesis of antioxidant enzymes and Hsps.

Phylogeography of the European ground squirrel, Spermophilus citellus (Rodentia: Sciuridae), in the Balkans

Abstract The Balkan Peninsula acted as a refugium for many steppic species during the Pleistocene, resulting in a high genetic variability, which, in some cases, presents a northward decreasing latitudinal gradient. In the present study, we investigate the genetic diversity of the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) in its Balkan distribution, sampled comprehensively across its entire distribution in Greece (133 samples from 21 localities). These samples are compared with others from Serbia (54 samples from eight localities) and the available published data from its range in Europe (124 sequences from GenBank). Our results show that the genetic diversity of the Greek and Serbian populations is not correlated with a latitudinal gradient. However, when the entire European range is considered, the model that best fits the genetic variation of the species is based on the ‘centre–periphery’ hypothesis. The founder (centre) populations of the species were most probably situated in south-eastern Bulgaria and European Turkey and underwent rapid expansion post-glacially, during the Holocene, both northwards (Central Europe) and southwards (Greece), as revealed by the decreased genetic diversity and phylogeographical inference analysis in these marginal regions. These results indicate a particular phylogeographical history of a European species and set a baseline for conservation management in its southern populations.

Identification and complete genome sequencing of a divergent olive virus T isolate and an olive leaf yellowing-associated virus isolate naturally infecting olive trees in Greece

Several new full genome sequences of olive viruses came to light recently via high-throughput sequencing (HTS) analysis. In this study, total RNA HTS analysis of two Greek olive trees revealed the presence of an olive virus T (OlVT) isolate and an olive leaf yellowing-associated virus (OLYaV) isolate. The full viral genome of OlVT isolate (50Ch) is composed of 6862 nucleotides encoding for three proteins (replicase, movement protein, and capsid protein) with typical betaflexiviruses’ genomic features. However, both sequence and phylogenetic data analysis exhibited high levels of variability between 50Ch and the previously characterized OlVT isolates. In addition, the almost full genome of the Greek OLYaV isolate (OL2) was obtained, which is composed of 16,693 nucleotides encoding for 11 open reading frames (ORFs) and shares common genomic features with the recently characterized OLYaV isolates from Spain and Brazil. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis revealed high similarity between these three isolates. Due to problems encountered with the detection of both viruses, new nested RT-PCR assays were developed and applied. In addition, recombination events were observed in OlVT isolates (50Ch GR-168), thus highlighting the potential role of this mechanism in the evolution of the virus. This study is adding further knowledge to the limited information available about these recently characterized olive infecting viral pathogens and highlights their widespread distribution in Greece, one of the most important olive producing countries of the world.

Trading with richer and poorer countries: trade integration and regional inequality in Greece

This paper examines the link between increased trade and regional GDP growth across the regional income distribution in Greece during the post-EMU period (2000–2013). By means of quantile regression techniques, panel fixed effects and system generalized method of moments (GMM), we disentangle the effects of EU trade—trading with generally richer countries—versus global trade—in the case of Greece, mostly trading with poorer countries—at several points of the regional income distribution to identify differences in trade elasticities. The analysis finds that the impact of EU trade is highly heterogeneous and mainly affects negatively the economy of the richer regions in Greece. In contrast, the effects of EU trade display insignificant results for the lower-income regions, attributed to the absence of direct substitution effects.

Further distributional records of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1854) (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) in Greece

Although the Indo-Eastern Mediterranean giant water bug Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1854) is Europe’s largest hemipteran and aquatic insect, its distribution in Greece has remained poorly understood. Only a handful of records exists from the Ionian Islands, Macedonia, Thrace, and isolated observations in Preveza (Epirus), Achaia (north-western Peloponnese) and the islands of Rhodes and Thasos. Using records from personal observations, biomonitoring data, online arthropod identification groups and museum collections, we expand the distribution knowledge of this species to Aetolia-Acarnania, Thessaly, southern Peloponnese, Samothraki, North Sporades and the Cyclades. We also include a large number of new localities in areas within its previously known range.

Is the trend in new introductions of marine non-indigenous species a reliable criterion for assessing good environmental status? Τhe case study of Greece

This study presents the updated status of marine non-indigenous species (NIS) distribution in Greece and investigates trends in new NIS introductions, at both national and subnational level, during 1970-2017. The overall picture shows an increase in new introductions from the 1970s to 2017. The number of unaided introduced species (mainly Lessepsian immigrants) followed an upward trend in the South Aegean Sea until 2017. Similarly, the number of NIS associated with transport-stowaway (NIS introduced mainly via ballast and boat hulls) followed an upward until 2017 in the South Aegean Sea, but also in the Hellenic Levantine coasts. However, these results are greatly affected by a monitoring bias, which appears to be the main factor influencing the number of new NIS introductions reported from Greece and its subnational areas. This monitoring bias, as well as the continuous influx of Lessepsian NIS into the Aegean Sea, constitutes a challenge for Greece as regards setting exact boundaries for areas with or without Good Environmental Status (GES), based on Descriptor 2, primary criterion C1 (D2C1), of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Dedicated monitoring of marine NIS should be established and be constant in space, time and across taxonomic groups. Prioritization should be given to hot-spot areas of new NIS introductions, such as ports, aquaculture units and marine protected areas. This should be a prerequisite for applying the primary criterion D2C1 of the MSFD properly, at both national and subnational level. Finally, as regards the implementation of D2C1 of the MSDF and setting exact threshold values, we highlight the need for subregional and regional coordination in the Mediterranean.

Temporal and spatial patterns of orchid species distribution in Greece: implications for conservation

Studies comparing species’ distribution range at different time periods provide valuable information about temporal trends, and may help to identify the factors responsible for these changes. This knowledge is vital for setting conservation priorities and applying suitable management strategies and practices focused on species’ conservation. We examined records produced before and after December 31, 1985 for determining possible changes in the distribution range of 195 orchid species recorded in Greece, using a 10 × 10 km grid as the recording unit. We used regression techniques to explore the association of species richness with environmental and spatial variables. Species richness was calculated by using the orchid records made (a) before December 31, 1985, (b) after January 1, 1986, and (c) in both time periods. Generalized linear models (GLM) were used for identifying the most significant factors associated with the distribution of the threatened orchids of Greece. Most Greek orchids showed an increasing trend in distribution from the first to the second period, with the exception of a few Critically Endangered species, whose distribution was larger in the first than in the second period. The spatial distribution of the threatened orchids was mostly explained by land area and the area of the calcareous substrates at each grid cell, whereas all variables that were used in the GLM analysis accounted for about 32% of the variance. The observed increasing trend in orchid distribution should be attributed to the extensive research efforts during the second period, especially in areas of high altitude and towards the northern parts of Greece. Our results did not support the findings of other studies, mainly from northern Europe, which showed a significant decline in the distribution range of their orchid flora. These differences in distribution trends could be attributed to the complex orographic configuration of Greece, which renders large parts of the country rather unsuitable for agricultural use or for extensive urban development.

Vulnerability of peri‑urban and residential areas to landscape fires in Greece: Evidence by wildland-urban interface data

We provide a map of wildland urban interface (WUI) areas at national scale in Greece, using as primary data the Corine Land Cover (CLC) 2018 product. The WUI areas distribution in Greece is calculated for all the regional units of the county. The regional units correspond to NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) level 2 for Greece, being important for the national to regional fire risk management and mitigation within the country. Furthermore, spatially explicit information regarding the fire affected areas and the changes in WUI areas between 2006 and 2018 on the basis of the CLC data for each regional unit is also provided.This geospatial information can provide valuable, concurrent information at no-cost to all responsible and competent authorities involved in landscape fire management in Greece and represent a valuable contribution to assist in national and regional scale planning.

Cercopithifilaria species in dogs and ticks from Greece.

Filarioids of the genus Cercopithifilaria (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) are parasites of wild and domestic animals in tropical and subtropical regions being transmitted by ixodid ticks. Though this filarioid species have been studied in canine and tick populations in Europe, data on their species diversity and geographical distribution in Greece is scant. Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the presence of Cercopithifilaria spp. in dogs and ticks across Greece and to assess the possible risk factors. A total of 500 skin biopsies were collected from dogs, while 508 ticks were collected from 180 infested animals and examined. Sediments from skin biopsies were microscopically screened for detection of dermal microfilaria (mfs). Skin samples (n = 115) and tick specimens (n = 153) were molecularly subjected by PCR. Overall, 70 samples (14%) scored positive for mfs. Specifically, 68 samples (13.6%) were positive for Cercopithifilaria bainae and two (0.4%) were co-infected with C. bainae and Cercopithifilaria sp. II. Molecular analyses revealed that all sequences obtained belong to C. bainae. Haplotype I was the most frequent (92.6%), followed by haplotype XVIII (3%) and haplotypes II and IX (1.5%). Three new haplotypes of C. bainae, named XIX, XX, and XXI, were also identified. Among the risk factors examined, habitat, dog use, body weight, tick infestation history, and the use of acaricides were associated with the presence of C. bainae. The estimated prevalence of Cercopithifilaria spp. demonstrates that these filarioids are common in dogs and ticks in Greece. Finally, the identification of 7 haplotypes for C. bainae confirms their genetic variability.

Presence of Cicadomorpha in olive orchards of Greece with special reference to Xylella fastidiosa vectors

AbstractInsects of the infraorder Cicadomorpha cause serious economic impact on agriculture because of pathogens’ transmission. The vector‐borne bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which is associated with olive quick decline syndrome, is exclusively transmitted by insects of this infraorder and more specific by sharpshooters and spittlebugs. Efficient control practices of the insect vectors are necessary for the control of the disease in cases of outbreaks. Therefore, the knowledge of the vectors' species as well as the robust understanding of their biology and ecology is of crucial importance. In the present study, extensive sampling was conducted in 28 olive orchards of Greece during the years 2017 and 2018 aiming to investigate which species of this infraorder are present, with special interest to those which are considered as vectors of the bacterium. During the surveys, 4,350 Cicadomorpha insects were collected. Forty‐two, five and one species of the families Cicadellidae, Aphrophoridae and Cercopidae, respectively, were identified. The results of the surveys revealed that the main potential vectors of X. fastidiosa in Greek olive orchards are the spittlebugs Philaenus spumarius and Neophilaenus campestris. Those species have wide distribution in Greece and are present for a long period during the year, and they inhabit both the ground vegetation and the olive trees' canopy. A representative portion of the captured spittlebugs was analysed with molecular methods, and the analysis confirmed the absence of X. fastidiosa in the tested individuals.

Film distribution in Greece: formal and informal networks of circulation since the financial crisis

The article examines formal and informal film distribution in Greece since the financial crisis of 2009. By ‘formal’ I refer mainly to commercially organized theatrical, DVD and online distribution, while ‘informal’ consists of various networks of unlicensed circulation of films, usually referred to as ‘piracy’. The article’s aims are threefold: As a media industries study, it focuses on formal distribution; it identifies the players that are involved in the process of rights acquisition and promotion of feature films in Greece, and explains their working practices. From a film studies perspective, it explores the mediating role of - both formal and informal - film distribution in helping (re) define and question the notion of national cinema. And finally, from a broader cultural studies angle, it presents a profile of the country in terms of what films circulate and how they are being watched, while pointing to comparisons with global and other national patterns of change. The article positions Greece in the broader context of recent debates around contemporary film distribution and piracy, highlights methodological issues, and identifies the way in which global distribution practices manifest themselves locally in a specific ‘small’ territory of the European periphery.

Recent Trends in HPV Infection and Type Distribution in Greece.

This study gives an insight into recent trends for Human papillomavirus (HPV)-specific infection and its fluctuation over the years 2011-2016. A total of 2,417 Caucasian women between the age of 18 and 71 years underwent their annual gynaecologic examination at the Outpatient Gynaecological Clinic in the study period. Overall HPV prevalence was 43.9%, and high-risk HPV accounted for 31.3%. HPV16 was the most common high-risk type followed by HPV51 and HPV31. HPV positivity was higher in those with low- and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) than in women with a normal cytological test. HPV infection was highest in 2011.The prevalence of single infections remained higher than multiple infections over the entire study period. HPV16 prevalence was very high in the first years of the study and HPV18 exhibited highest prevalence in 2011. Younger women exhibited a significant increase in HPV infection from 2014. Overall HPV infection decreased over the study period. These data suggest that HPV vaccination might reduce the frequency of HSILs and cervical cancer and are useful for the development of a national screening programme.

Check list of the Dryopidae, Elmidae and Hydraenidae (Coleoptera) of Greece

Information on the Greek water beetle families Dryopidae, Elmidae and Hydracnidae is fairly scattered throughout the literature. Our knowledge of these families which inhabit mainly running water largely results from numerous short excursions, collecting trips and limnological projects carried out by numerous European entomologists (e.g. P. Audisio, G. Ferro, M.A. Bch, E. Janssens, H. Malicky, A. d’Orchymont, F. Wachtel). However, a concise summary of the Dryopidae, Elmidae and Hydraenidae known from Greece has never been published. This survey is mainly based on literature records. However, a number of species which were recently collected in Greece are recorded for the first time from that country. In the following check list, the names of the species (or subspecies) are followed by the name(s) of the authors) and by one important reference which contains information about the species distribution in Greece. Ten species are herein recorded from Greece for the first time.

The female of Aceria oleae is described and illustrated and for first time, the dimensions of the different parts and accessories of the body are given. The male of this mite is also described and illustrated for first time. The world distribution as well as the local distribution in Greece are recorded. Information on the onomatology is provided.

First record of Dryocosmus kuriphilus in Greece

After the first introduction of chestnut gall wasp, Dryocosmus kuriphilus, in Italy, it has spread rapidly in several other European countries, probably largely due to trade in chestnut plants. Despite the measures taken to prevent further spread of this pest to other countries, D. kuriphilus was detected in Greece for the first time in 2014. However, surveys have shown that the pest is still of very limited distribution in Greece. Having faced the damage caused by chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) over the last 50 years, the production of chestnuts in Greece is now seriously threatened by chestnut gall wasp, which has already caused extensive losses in chestnut production of other countries. In order to minimize the impact of chestnut gall wasp, control measures are being designed involving the release of the parasitoid Torymus sinensis.

Non-extensive statistical physics applied to heat flow and the earthquake frequency–magnitude distribution in Greece

This study investigates seismicity in Greece and its relation to heat flow, based on the science of complex systems. Greece is characterised by a complex tectonic setting, which is represented mainly by active subduction, lithospheric extension and volcanism. The non-extensive statistical physics formalism is a generalisation of Boltzmann–Gibbs statistical physics and has been successfully used for the analysis of a variety of complex systems, where fractality and long-range interactions are important. Consequently, in this study, the frequency–magnitude distribution analysis was performed in a non-extensive statistical physics context, and the non-extensive parameter, qM, which is related to the frequency–magnitude distribution, was used as an index of the physical state of the studied area. Examination of the spatial distribution of qM revealed its relation to the spatial distribution of seismicity during the period 1976–2009. For focal depths ≤40 km, we observe that strong earthquakes coincide with high qM values. In addition, heat flow anomalies in Greece are known to be strongly related to crustal thickness; a thin crust and significant heat flow anomalies characterise the central Aegean region. Moreover, the data studied indicate that high heat flow is consistent with the absence of strong events and consequently with low qM values (high b-values) in the central Aegean region and around the volcanic arc. However, the eastern part of the volcanic arc exhibits strong earthquakes and high qM values whereas low qM values are found along the North Aegean Trough and southwest of Crete, despite the fact that strong events are present during the period 1976–2009 in both areas.

The Challenge of Trade Adjustment in Greece

Greece’s trade deficit declined by 10% of GDP between 2007 and 2012, removing one of the great economic imbalances of the pre-crisis years. However, this reduction was achieved exclusively through import compression while exports fell over that period, thereby worsening the economic crisis. This chapter studies Greece’s export underperformance in comparison to Ireland, Portugal and Spain as well as Greece’s own pre-crisis experience. The main findings are that (1) given past performance, Greece’s exports should have increased by 25%, rather than drop by 5% between 2007 and 2012; (2) labor markets have adjusted to the new economic environment; (3) product markets did not adjust, hindering the recovery of competitiveness; (4) export underperformance is responsible for a third of the decline in GDP since 2007. We find that the business environment and firm size distribution in Greece are also hindering the necessary adjustment.

Dry Grassland Types in the Prespa National Park (Nw Greece), Including the Southernmost Occurrence of the Priority Habitat Type “Pannonic Sand Steppes” (Code 6260)

Abstract A recently completed project on the Natura 2000 sites of Prespa National Park revealed that the area hosts 49 habitat types according to the EU classification, of which eight have a narrowly restricted distribution in Greece. The priority habitat type “*6260 Pannonic sand steppes” is reported here for the first time for Greece. The new locality represents its southernmost occurrence on the Balkan Peninsula. The aim of this paper therefore is to describe the Greek stands of this habitat type, investigate the factors affecting its occurrence and discuss the associated conservation issues. This is based on a total of 87 releves sampled for this study and 8 additional releves from the literature. The releves were classified by applying TWINSPAN and ordinated using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Six vegetation units could be distinguished. One of these corresponds to the habitat type *6260 and was found exclusively on inland sand dunes. Syntaxonomically, we assigned this unit to the alliance Sileno conicae-Cerastion semidecandri s.l. of the class Koelerio-Corynephoretea. Its occurrence in the study area seems to be determined by climatic factors, as well as by the sandy substrate, while anthropogenic disturbances such as grazing also appear to be beneficial to some degree. Apart from the Koelerio-Corynephoretea, another five grassland classes were distinguished in the national park, namely the Thero-Brachypodietea, Stellarietea mediae, Festuco-Brometea, Daphno-Festucetea and Juncetea trifidi.
