Scalable Path-Setup Scheme for All-Optical Dynamic Circuit Switched NoCs in Cache Coherent CMPs

Nanophotonics is a promising solution for on-chip interconnection due to its intrinsic low-latency and low-power features, which can be useful for performance and energy in future Chip Multi-Processors (CMPs). This article proposes a novel arbitrated all-optical path-setup scheme for tiled CMPs adopting circuit-switched optical networks. It aims at significantly reducing path-setup latency and overall energy consumption. The proposed arbitrated scheme is able to configure multiple photonic switches simultaneously, instead of sequentially as it is done in state-of-the-art proposals. The proposed fast optical path-setup solution reduces the overhead in each transmission and, most importantly, allows optical circuit-switched networks to effectively serve cache coherence traffic, which is mainly composed of relatively small messages. Specifically, we propose a single-arbiter scheme where the whole topology is managed by a central module (single-arbiter) that takes care of the path-setup procedures. Then, to tackle scalability, we propose a logically clustered architecture (multi-arbiter) in which an arbiter is allocated in each logical core-cluster and an ad hoc distributed reservation protocol coordinates arbiters to manage inter-cluster path reservations. We show that our proposed single-arbiter architecture outperforms a state-of-the-art optical network with sequential path-setup (optical baseline) in the case of 8- and 16-core tiled CMP setups. However, due to serialization issues, the single-arbiter solution is not able to compete with a reference electronic baseline for bigger 32- and 64-core setups even if still performing much better than the optical baseline. Conversely, our multi-arbiter hierarchical solution allows us to improve performance up to almost 20% and 40% for 32- and 64-core setups, respectively, demonstrating a wide applicability of the proposed technique. Energy-wise, the analyzed solutions enable significant savings compared to both the optical baseline with sequential path setup, and to the electronic counterpart. Specifically, results show more than 25% average improvement for the single-arbiter in the 8- and 16-core cases, and more than 40% and 15% savings for the multi-arbiter in the 32- and 64-core cases, respectively.

WiMedia Alliance, an industry association for supporting ultra-wide band plays a major role in personal area network. It handles high volume of data for multimedia applications such as construction of home networks, establishment of virtual multimedia connectivity for video or audio sharing, etc. Since quality of service has its own impact in wireless networking domain, we tried to investigate the effect of allocating medium access slot by considering mobility and link quality. We also present an optimal utilisation of bandwidth in a highly contented environment along with a suitable mechanism for scheduling of medium access slots in an effective manner. The performance analysis of the proposed algorithm was tested using OmNet++. The results were promising in terms of improvement delay, throughput and packet drop ratio.

Throughput Modeling of Distributed Reservation Protocol

To evaluate the performance of distributed medium access control (MAC) layer of emerging ultra wideband (UWB) and 60-GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless personal area networks (WPANs) based on distributed reservation protocol (DRP) of ECMA-368 and ECMA-387 standards, we provide an analytical model for the probability distribution of steady state throughput as a function of the network dimensions size, number of devices, antenna beamwidth, transmission range, bit error rate (BER), antenna disturbance rate (ADR), aggregation length, payload size, and incoming frame rate. Using this model, the optimal payload size is computed as an example of optimization problem. We also propose a formula for the starvation and fairness and using them, we found a major flaw in DRP, i.e., its poor fairness. We develop a fair DRP (FDRP) protocol and modify our model to cover it. The models are evaluated by simulation of ad-hoc network scenarios and results show that the average error is less than 2 percent.

Wearable Computer Network Design using Dual-Role WUSB Clustering

A recent major development in computer technology is the advent of the wearable computer system that is based on human-centric interface technology trends and ubiquitous computing environments. Wearable computer systems can be integrated with the wireless universal serial bus (WUSB) that refers to USB technology that is merged with WiMedia PHY/MAC technical specifications. A wireless body area network (WBAN) allows the integration of intelligent, miniaturized, low-power sensor nodes that monitor body functions and the surrounding environment. In this paper, we propose a method for multi-hop network extension of WUSB over WBAN protocol. Unlike a wired USB that physically separates the USB host and USB device, WUSB allows a device to separately function as both a WUSB host and WUSB device on a single transceiver; such devices are referred to as the dual role devices (DRD). By using this DRD function of WUSB protocol, we propose a WUSB clustering method to realize the multi-hop network extension of WUSB over WBAN protocol in wireless home networks. In the WUSB clustering method, a new DRD message format reserves 2-hop range private DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) resources. In the experiment results, efficiency of the WUSB clustering method is proven through throughput evaluation in viewpoints of medical and nonmedical multi-hop WBAN services.

Channel State Information Based Distributed Reservation Protocol for Energy Efficiency in WiMedia Networks

Ultra wideband (UWB) technology has emerged as a solution for the wireless interface between medical sensors and a personal server in future telemedicine systems. The WiMedia Alliance has specified a distributed medium access control protocol based on UWB for high-rate wireless personal area networks. The legacy WiMedia standard must statically reserve an additional transmission time of 30 %, since transmission time is limited to network environment in wireless network. When channel environment is deteriorating badly, the additional reservation may not have enough time. Because the legacy WiMedia standard must wait the next reservation period if sending device does not transmit data frames in the current reservation period, the transmission delay occurs. Also, in a good channel environment, the additional reservation time results in a waste of performance. Therefore, there is a need to provide the reliability of data transmission as sending device predicts channel environment in WiMedia network and reserves the distributed reservation protocol (DRP) reservation duration considering the estimated channel environment. In this paper, we propose a novel resource reservation scheme considering channel environment in WiMedia network. The simulation results show that proposed protocol can enhance the throughput and delay performance and improve energy efficiency by minimizing the idle period of DRP reservation block.

Distributed Relay-Assisted Retransmission Scheme for Wireless Home Networks

A relay transmission is a promising technology to improve network performance in dynamic infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a distributed relay-assisted retransmission (DRR) scheme in multirate wireless home networks. The idea is to exploit overhearing nodes to retransmit on behalf of sender node after receiving the block acknowledgement (B-ACK) from destination node. For the first transmission, a basic relay (BR) node is used by considering the high data rate between source node and BR node. And then, for the retransmission, a retransmission relay (RR) node is used by considering the high data rate between RR node and destination node. The DRR scheme extends a distributed reservation protocol in WiMedia home networks and inquires the candidate relay node as BR nodes and RR nodes during beacon period. In addition, the DRR scheme can minimize control overhead for relay transmission because all nodes should send and listen to the beacon frames of neighbor nodes during beacon period. We also present the relay decision scheme and channel allocation procedure for maximizing the efficiency in the DRR scheme. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the DRR scheme can improve the overall throughput by 40% and reduce the energy consumption by 47% compared with nonrelay transmission schemes when the number of nodes increases.

WiMedia Distributed MAC 통신 시스템에서 이동성 지원을 위한 릴레이 통신 프로토콜

본 논문에서는 UWB 기술 기반 WiMedia Distributed Medium Access Control (D-MAC) 프로토콜에서, 디바이스들의 이동성으로 인해 발생하는 Distributed Reservation Protocol (DRP) 예약 충돌 현상을 분석한다. 그리고 DRP 예약 충돌 시 발생하는 성능 저하를 감소시키기 위해 Conflict Resolution (CR) 방식과 DRP 릴레이 기술을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 DRP 릴레이 프로토콜은 충돌대상 디바이스에게 예약된 자원을 유지할 수 있도록, DRP 예약 충돌 시 릴레이 노드를 경유하여 다른 Indirect Link 링크를 빠르게 예약할 수 있는 분산적인 자원 예약 프로토콜을 제안한다. 이동성 환경을 고려한 시뮬레이션 결과는 CR 기술과 함께 DRP 릴레이 기술을 적용하여, 디바이스들의 이동성이 증가하더라도 수율 감소를 방지할 수 있음을 나타내었다. And a DRP relay protocol and a DRP conflict resolution (CR) are proposed to overcome the performance degradation at DRP conflicts. In order to give the loser device at DRP conflicts a chance to maintain resources, the proposed DRP relay protocol executed at each device helps the loser device reserve an indirect link maintaining the required resources via a relay node. Simulation results considering the mobile environment have indicated that the DRP relay combined with the CR prevent the throughput decrease even though mobility of devices increases.

In this paper, firstly, the fair SoQ-based Distributed Reservation Protocol (DRP) for D-MAC is analyzed. And a novel SoQ-based relay transmission protocol is proposed to overcome DRP conflicts fast. In the proposed protocol, each device executes the Satisfaction of QoS (SoQ) time slot allocation algorithm independently. And, in order to give the loser device due to DRP conflicts another chance to maintain QoS resources, the proposed relay transmission protocol helps the device reserve another indirect link maintaining the required QoS resources via a relay node.

Distributed multi-hop reservation protocol for wireless personal area Ultra-Wideband networks

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a promising technology for multimedia applications in wireless personal area networks (WPANs) that supports very high data rates with lower power transmission for short range communication. The limitation of coverage radius of UWB network necessitates for multihop transmissions. Unfortunately, as the number of hops increases, the quality of service (QoS) degrades rapidly in multihop network. The main goal of this research is to develop and enhance multihop transmission that ensures QoS of real time traffic through the proposed distributed multihop reservation (DMR) scheme. The DMR scheme consists of two modules; distributed multihop reservation protocol (DMRP) and path selection. DMRP incorporates resource reservation, routing and connection setup that are extended on the existing WiMedia Media Access Control protocol (MAC). On the other hand, the path selection determines the optimal path that makes up the multihop route. The path selection selects nodes based on the highest Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR). The performance of DMR scheme has been verified based on the performance of the video traffic transmission. The main metrics of QoS are measured in terms of Peak Signal- to- Noise ratio (PSNR), End-to-End (E2E) delay, and throughput. The results show that DMRP compared to Multiple Resources Reservation Scheme (MRRS) in six (6) hops transmission has enhanced the average PSNR by 16.5%, reduced the average E2E delay by 14.9% and has increased the throughput by 11.1%. The DMR scheme which is the inclusion of path selection in DMRP has been compared to Link Quality Multihop Relay (LQMR). DMR scheme has improved the video quality transmission by 17.5%, reduced the average E2E delay by 18.6% and enhanced the average throughput by 20.3%. The QoS of six (6) hops transmission employing DMR scheme is almost sustained compared to two hops transmission with the QoS experiencing only slight degradation of about 2.0%. This is a considerable achievement as it is well known that as the number of hops increases the QoS in multihop transmission degrades very rapidly. Thus DMR scheme has shown to significantly improve the performance of real time traffic on UWB multihop network. In general, DMR can be applied to any WPAN network that exploit multihop transmission.

Since the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme causes lots of conflicts due to failure of beacon detection in wireless channel environment, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. Therefore, we propose Relay DRP protocol, which makes a relay path to avoid DRP conflicts or harsh channel conditions through cooperative relay transmission scheme and is compliant with the current WiMedia D-MAC protocol. Simulation results demonstrate performance improvements of the proposed method for throughput and energy consumption.

A Cross-layer Link Adaptive HD Video Transmission Scheme in WiMedia D-MAC based UWB Systems

In this paper, we propose a QoS (Quality of Service)-aware and cooperative resource reservation scheme using cross-layer link adaptation for wireless high definition video transmission through UWB (Ultra Wide Band) network with D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control). A wireless high definition video transmission system usually requires stable high throughput even without line-of-sight, e.g., a destination device in another room separated by a wall. Since the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme causes lots of DRP resource reservation conflicts due to failure of beacon detection in wireless channel environment, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. And the current WiMedia MAC standard has not considered QoS provisioning even though QoS parameters such as a range of service rates are provided to each traffic stream. Therefore, we propose Relay DRP protocol with QoS-based relay node selection criterion, which makes a relay path to avoid DRP resource reservation conflicts and guarantee QoS more stably through cross-layer link adaptation of cooperative relay transmission scheme and is compliant with the current WiMedia D-MAC protocol. Simulation results demonstrate performance improvements of the proposed method for throughput and QoS provisioning.

Reservation Conflict-Free MAC Design for Mobile Wireless USB Devices with Distributed MAC

In this paper, a collision-free resource reservation scheme for WUSB (Wireless Universal Serial Bus) networks with WiMedia D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control), Since distributed characteristic of the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme may cause lots of conflicts, overall performances of the WUSB with WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. In addition, when we consider multi-hop environment, “mobile” hidden node problem due to mobility of WUSB devices can be happened, and it is a critical problem to mobile WUSB devices transceiving real-time QoS(Quality of Service) traffic. To tackle the problem, we propose a new DRP reservation mechanism to prevent DRP conflicts for multi-hop mobility support in WUSB networks with WiMedia D-MAC and show its improved performance via simulation results.

Wireless USB Cluster Tree based on Distributed Reservation Protocol for Mobility Support

Wireless USB (WUSB) is the USB technology merged with WiMedia PHY /MAC. WUSB can be applied to wireless personal area network applications as well as PAN applications like wired USB. However, due to mobility of WUSB devices in multi-hop environment, DRP (distributed reservation protocol) reservation conflicts happen frequently among WUSB devices with three-hop distance. To solve this problem in large scale WUSB networks, we propose a new DRP reservation scheme using dual role devices and a new Operation Info bits for three-hop mobility support. It is shown by simulation and numerical results that throughputs of WUSB devices at three-hop range hidden DRP reservation conflicts are largely increased.

Modeling the Beaconing Mechanism in Short Range Wireless Networks Based on the DRP Protocol in Outdoor Environments

A probabilistic method is developed here to model the beacon period length (BPL) defined in the ECMA-368 and ECMA-387 standards for the distributed reservation protocol. The model computes the probability mass function (PMF) of the BPL in a superframe which will be used in modeling of throughput, delay, fairness, power and other major distributed medium access control layer parameters of the emerging ultra wideband and 60- GHz millimeter wave wireless personal area networks. The model relates the PMF of the BPL to the network density, antenna beamwidth, and the transmission range of the devices assuming that the devices are distributed in an outdoor environment based on Two-dimensional Poisson distribution. The proposed model is evaluated by simulating different scenarios in the network and the results show that on average, the model for the average BPL has an absolute error of 1.57 %.

A Conflict-Avoided Resource Reservation using Reservation Diversity for UWB WPAN with Distributed MAC Protocol

In this paper, a conflict-avoided resource reservation scheme for UWB (Ultra Wide Band) WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) with D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control) is proposed. Since distributed characteristic of the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme may cause lots of conflicts, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. In addition, once a DRP conflict occurs, only one of the DRP reservations involved in that DRP conflict maintains the reserved MASs, while the other DRP reservation must be terminated and DRP negotiations for them have to be re-started. Such DRP termination and renegotiation time delays due to the DRP conflicts can be a critical problem to the mobile devices transceiving real-time QoS traffic streams. Therefore, we propose a mechanism to avoid DRP conflicts by providing a kind of path diversity using relay transmission scheme and demonstrate its performance improvements via simulation results.
