Distinct profiles of university students engaged in food and alcohol disturbance behaviors

ABSTRACT The present study aimed at exploring the combined effect of risk of eating disorders (ED), alcohol use, physical activity, and social and psychological traits in Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD) behaviors. Nine-hundred and seventy-six college students were included in the study. They were then divided into two groups based on the Compensatory Eating and Behaviors in Response to Alcohol Consumption Scale (CEBRACS): students with a FAD positive score and student with a FAD negative score. Both groups of participants were compared on the risk of ED, alcohol and physical activity variables, as well as social and psychological dimensions. A cluster analysis was performed on the FAD positive group to determine distinct subgroups and to explore the involvement of social and psychological dimensions in FAD behaviors. The comparison between FAD and non-FAD students demonstrated a more severe alcohol use, risk of ED, a higher level of impulsivity, anxiety, depression and more drinking motives as well as a lower self-esteem in students engaged in FAD behaviors compared with non-engaged students. The cluster analysis identified four clusters: the asceticism FAD subgroup, the damage control FAD subgroup, the emotional FAD subgroup and the recreational FAD subgroup. Overall, results reveal that FAD should not be considered as a unitary behavior but rather as a more complex pattern involving distinct psychological profiles.

The relationship between psychological capital, burnout and perceived stress in junior nurses: a latent profile analysis.

Psychological capital, an intrinsic personal asset, enhances junior nurses' ability to navigate transition and sustain superior job performance. This study aimed to classify junior nurses into distinct psychological capital profiles and examine their associations with burnout and perceived stress levels. A cross-sectional study involving 480 junior nurses from three hospitals in Beijing assessed psychological capital, stress, and burnout using e-questionnaires, from July 2021 to August 2022. We employed exploratory latent profile analysis for psychological capital profiling and logistic regression with the best subset method to identify the influential factors. The results of the latent profile analysis supported the models of two latent profiles, which were defined as low psychological capital (224, 46.5%) and high psychological capital (256, 53.5%). Logistic regression revealed that introverted nurses and those experiencing moderate to high levels of burnout and stress were more likely to exhibit low psychological capital. Nursing management should proactively identify and support junior nurses with low psychological capital, with a focus on introverted individuals, to mitigate the impact of stress and burnout.

Home Healthcare Patients With Distinct Psychological, Cognitive, and Behavioral Symptom Profiles and At-Risk Subgroup for Hospitalization and Emergency Department Visits Using Latent Class Analysis.

One-third of home healthcare patients are hospitalized or visit emergency departments during a 60-day episode of care. Among all risk factors, psychological, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms often remain underdiagnosed or undertreated in older adults. Little is known on subgroups of older adults receiving home healthcare services with similar psychological, cognitive, and behavioral symptom profiles and an at-risk subgroup for future hospitalization and emergency department visits. Our cross-sectional study used data from a large, urban home healthcare organization (n = 87,943). Latent class analysis was conducted to identify meaningful subgroups of older adults based on their distinct psychological, cognitive, and behavioral symptom profiles. Adjusted multiple logistic regression was used to understand the association between the latent subgroup and future hospitalization and emergency department visits. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted to describe the individual characteristics and to test for significant differences. The three-class model consisted of Class 1: "Moderate psychological symptoms without behavioral issues," Class 2: "Severe psychological symptoms with behavioral issues," and Class 3: "Mild psychological symptoms without behavioral issues." Compared to Class 3, Class 1 patients had 1.14 higher odds and Class 2 patients had 1.26 higher odds of being hospitalized or visiting emergency departments. Significant differences were found in individual characteristics such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, and insurance. Home healthcare clinicians should consider the different latent subgroups of older adults based on their psychological, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. In addition, they should provide timely assessment and intervention especially to those at-risk for hospitalization and emergency department visits.

Are all Sex Criminals the Same? Consumers of Child Pornography Reconsidered

A theoretical and practical distinction is drawn between sex offenders and consumers of child pornography on the bases of their unique and different psychological makeups and motives to offend. Distinct psychological profiles have been revealed in clinical practice and in research between “active” sex offenders (e.g., sexual assault, sexual abuse, molestation, active pedophiles, etc.) and “passive” sex offenders (i.e., those prosecuted for consumption of child pornography). Recommendations are made for legislation changes and development of treatment approaches, based on these differences.

Do HRM Practices Affect Employees’ Psychological Contract Profiles? An Empirical Investigation

The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between human resource management (HRM) practices and employees’ psychological contract profiles and the effect of psychological contract profiles on employees’ job performance and work engagement. In doing so, we examined four aspects of HRM practices (job participation and involvement, staffing, training, and rewards) in determining psychological contract profile membership. Using a sample of 302 working adults collected for an online survey in the U.S., we identified three distinct psychological contract profiles, namely, transaction dominant, relation dominant, and a hybrid contract profile among survey participants. Results from latent profile analysis showed that reward-oriented HRM practices increased the likelihood of being classified into a relation dominant psychological contract profile. We also found significant interaction effect between staffing and reward-oriented HRM practices and organizational trust in predicting classification into a relation dominant psychological contract profile. Our analysis indicated that employees in hybrid profiles underperformed those having a dominant contract type, either transaction or relation dominant. We discussed the implications and limitations of our study and suggested future research avenues.

Tobacco Dependence Among French University Students: A Cluster Analytic Approach to Identifying Distinct Psychological Profiles of Smokers

This study investigates the combination of several psychological factors related to tobacco smoking to identify smokers’ psychological profiles among French university students. A cluster analysis was performed on smoking motives, psychosocial variables, and the smoker identity ( N = 909). Five profiles were identified and then compared regarding tobacco dependence and motivations to quit. “Normative” and “sociohedonist smokers” are characterized by two distinct social factors (normative influences and social motives) and moderate dependence. “Dependent identified smokers” have higher levels of dependence motives, smoker identity and tobacco dependence associated with low motivations to quit. “Inconsistent smokers” have weak smoker identity and weak smoking motives, a strong perceived control over resisting smoking, low dependence and motivations to quit. “Coping smokers” have strong sedative and addictive motives and exhibit moderate dependence and motivations to quit. This research encourages prevention programs to consider the diversity of student smokers with strategies adapted to their psychological profiles.

Distinct Psychological Profiles Linking Childhood Adversity and Substance Misuse in High-Risk Young Adults

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) constitute a key determinant in the development of substance misuse. However, the understanding of how ACEs cultivate this risk lacks the specificity needed to inform effective prevention and intervention practices. This issue may be remedied by exploring the distinction between ACEs and their effects on development. The present study investigated whether distinct patterns of adversity are differentially associated with substance misuse along unique profiles of psychological variables, namely anxiety and punishment sensitivity – an internalizing profile – versus reward sensitivity and executive functioning – an externalizing profile. Using a cross-sectional retrospective design, 124 high-risk young adults completed assessments of childhood adversity and psychological functioning. We employed the ACE-IQ to capture extended ACEs such as community and collective violence, as our sample grew up in the post-conflict society of Northern Ireland. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed three patterns of adversity co-occurrence – Childhood Maltreatment, Household Dysfunction and Community Adversity, all of which independently predicted different types of substance misuse. Childhood Maltreatment was significantly associated with heavy drug use probability; Household Dysfunction was associated with cannabis dependence probability; and Community Adversity was associated with both cannabis dependence and heavy drug use probability. Logistic regressions (all p < .05) showed that heavy drug use probability was predicted by Childhood Maltreatment and anxiety in one model, and by Community Adversity and reduced punishment sensitivity in another, suggesting that different types of ACEs were associated with partially distinct outcomes in this sample. These results support the proposal that different ACE subtypes confer distinct effects, which carries clinical implications for substance misuse prevention and intervention.

Profiles of post-migration stressors and mental health in refugees: A latent class analysis

Studies have documented the mental health effects of pre-migration trauma on resettled refugees and identified distinct psychological symptom profiles using person centred statistical techniques (e.g., latent class analysis; LCA). These techniques have advanced our understanding of the complex presentation of trauma and psychopathology in refugees. The current study employs LCA to examine patterns of exposure to stressors including post-migration stressors, allowing us to identify patterns of post-migration stress exposure and their association with mental health outcomes. Participants were 1085 Arabic, Farsi, Tamil, or English speaking adult refugees. Pre-migration trauma, post-migration stressors, PTSD, depression, anger, and functional impairment was measured. LCA was conducted to identify distinct classes of post-migration stressors and associations with mental health and adjustment in the resettlement environment. Latent class analysis revealed 5 classes of participants: high difficulties class (7.2%), immigration fear class (14.4%), social disconnection class (17.3%), moderate difficulties class (28.9%) and a low difficulties class (32.3%). Each of the five classes shared commonalities in addition to key differences associated with specific demographic characteristics and psychopathology. Post-migration stressors appear to map onto distinct profiles, which uniquely contribute to functional impairment and mental health outcomes in refugees. These findings have substantial implications for public health and social services working with resettled refugee communities.

Tolerance as forbearance: Overcoming intuitive versus deliberative objections to cultural, religious, and ideological differences.

Tolerance is widely considered to be a key response to the challenge of managing diversity in pluralistic societies. However, tolerance comes in a number of different forms with distinct psychological profiles and societal implications. Drawing on research from political science, philosophy, sociology, and several subdisciplines within psychology, we discuss tolerance as a process of forbearance, which has received little attention in psychology. We propose a dual-process model of moral reasoning to differentiate between two distinct forms of tolerance and intolerance: intuitive and deliberative. Specifically, intuitive tolerance results from gut-level objection toward difference that is overridden (or not, in the case of intolerance) by more careful processing of the reasons to tolerate. By contrast, deliberative tolerance involves reflective thinking in which there is a weighing of one's reasonable objection to dissenting conduct against reasons to nevertheless tolerate, leading either to tolerance or intolerance. We further consider individual differences and situational factors that influence threat versus adjustment responses to living with diversity. Finally, we consider cultural differences involved in tolerance before exploring the implications of different meanings of tolerance and intolerance for living with cultural, religious, and ideological diversity. Psychological Capital Profiles and Their Relationship With Internal Learning in Teams of Undergraduate Students.

This study aims to analyze the relationship between psychological capital profiles and internal learning in teams. The participants in this study were 480 undergraduate students. We performed a cluster analysis using the SPSS and yielded four distinct psychological capital profiles. The student profile with the highest scores in self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience (Profile 2-Fully PsyCap) exhibited also the highest scores of internal learning in teams. On the other hand, the student profile with the lowest scores in self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience (Profile 1- Empty PsyCap) presented the lowest scores of internal learning in teams. It is also noteworthy that there was no significant relationship between the profile with a positive combination between self-efficacy and hope (profile 4) and the profile that presents the optimism as the only positive psychological capability (profile 3), in the way they relate to internal learning in teams, which led us to reject the second hypothesis of the study. This study reinforces the role of psychological capital in academic settings and suggests that psychological capital profiles can affect internal learning in teams differentially.

Unmasking School Bullying Witnesses: Five Different Psychological Profiles Related to Intention to Defend Victims

Whereas defending victims can put an end to school bullying incidents, few witnesses engage in such behavior. This study aimed to explore the intention to defend victims among distinct witness profiles based on behavioral and psychological characteristics. Within the framework of the theory of planned behavior, we measured intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control to defend victims, and past reactions to bullying among 276 middle school students (55.1% male, M age = 13.1, SD = 1.22) who had witnessed bullying. A cluster analysis identified five witness clusters. Although “prodefense,” “antidefense” and “probullying” witnesses are characterized by a coherent behavioral–psychological profile in favor of or against victim support, “conflicting beliefs’ witnesses” and “inconsistent witnesses” interestingly showed a beliefs conflict or psychological–behavioral gap that has never been identified before. Beyond elucidating witness characteristics, this study offers new prevention avenues adapted to each profile’s deficits. Impact Statement Profiling school bullying witnesses based on their psychological characteristics, beyond their mere behavioral reactions, better accounts for the diversity of witness profiles. The “outsiders” identified in the literature are not a unitary group but can be distinguished according to three distinct psychological profiles, two of which reveal certain psychological and behavioral incoherencies. Finally, combined with a stronger or weaker intention to defend victims, the identified psychological–behavioral profiles of witnesses make it possible to consider avenues of prevention adapted to each profile’s deficits. Distinct psychological profiles among college students with substance use: A cluster analytic approach

Substance use in youth is a central public health concern, related to deleterious consequences at psychological, social, and cognitive/cerebral levels. Previous research has identified impulsivity and consumption motives as key factors in the emergence of excessive substance use among college students. However, most studies have focused on a specific substance and have considered this population as a unitary group, ignoring the potential heterogeneity in psychological profiles. We used a cluster analytic approach to explore the heterogeneity in a large sample (N = 2741) of substance users (i.e., tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin) on impulsivity and consumption motives. We identified four clusters: The first two clusters, associated with good self-esteem, low anxiety, and moderate substance use, were respectively characterized by low impulsivity and consumption motives (Cluster 1) and by high social and enhancement motives without marked impulsivity (Cluster 2). The two other clusters were conversely related to low self-esteem and high anxiety, and characterized by high consumption motives (particularly conformity) together with elevated urgency (Cluster 3) and by globally increased impulsivity and consumption motives (Cluster 4). These two clusters were also associated with higher substance use. These results highlight the existence of distinct psychological profiles of substance users and underline the need to develop targeted prevention and intervention programs (e.g., focusing on the specific impulsivity facets and consumption motives presented by each subgroup). Based on these findings, we also suggest extending the exploration of distinct profiles of substance users by targeting other psychological variables (e.g., self-esteem).

Psychological profiles of patients with suspected drug allergy.

BackgroundSeveral studies demonstrate an important association between allergic diseases and patients' psychological characteristics.ObjectiveTo evaluate any differences in the psychological characteristics of patients studied for suspected drug allergy in comparison with healthy controls. A secondary aim was to assess differences between patients with confirmed versus excluded drug allergy, with respect to the clinical aspects.MethodsThe psychological characteristics of 115 consecutive patients >16 years-old, studied for suspected drug allergy were assessed. They were compared with healthy controls. Four validated questionnaires were used to evaluate anxiety, depression, alexithymia, and personality type.ResultsEighty-eight patients completed the evaluation: 34 had confirmed drug allergy and 33 excluded. Forty-eight healthy subjects filled the 4 questionnaires. Increased neuroticism was associated with increased odds of belonging to the excluded drug allergy group (odds ratio [OR], 1.374; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.173–1.609). Increased neuroticism (OR, 1.244; 95% CI, 1.065–1.453) and increased anxiety (OR, 1.210; 95% CI, 1.084–1.351) were associated with increased odds of confirmed drug allergy. However, higher extraversion decreased this likelihood (OR, 0.755; 95% CI, 0.643–0.888). The odds of having confirmed drug allergy was reduced by 79.7% (OR, 0.203; 95% CI, 0.060–0.694) for patients with 2 suspected drugs and by 84.6% (OR, 0.154; 95% CI, 0.029–0.809) for those with ≥3 in comparison to those with only one. Patients with moderate to severe reactions were more likely to have confirmed drug allergy (OR, 4.295; 95% CI, 1.105–16.693) than those with milder manifestations.ConclusionOur results highlight that patients with drug allergy have a distinctive psychological profile. Psychological assessment may help to identify patients that would benefit from a targeted intervention.

Clinical classes of injured workers with chronic low back pain: a latent class analysis with relationship to working status.

To determine (a) clinical classes of injured workers with chronic low back pain (CLBP), (b) predictors of class membership and (c) associations of classes with baseline work status. Patients with CLBP from a tertiary care outpatient clinic in Toronto, Canada were sampled. Latent class analysis was applied to determine class structure using physical, psychological and coping indicators. Classes were interpreted by class-specific means and analyzed for predictors of membership. Lastly, association of the classes with being off work was modeled. A 3-class model was chosen based on fit criteria, theoretical and clinical knowledge of this population. The resultant 3 classes represented low, moderate and high levels of clinical severity. Predictors of being in the high severity group compared to the low severity group were<high school education [odds ratio (OR) 3.06, 95% CI (1.47, 6.37)] and comorbidity total [OR 1.28, 95% CI (1.03, 1.59)]. High severity class membership was associated with four times increased risk of being off work at baseline compared to those in the low severity group [OR 3.98, 95% CI (1.61, 6.34)]. In a cohort of injured workers with CLBP, 3 clinical classes were identified with distinct psychological and physical profiles. These profiles are useful in aiding clinicians to identify patients of high clinical severity who may be potentially at risk for problematic return to work.

Rethinking pathology in adolescent self-harm: Towards a more complex understanding of risk factors

Researchers have begun to consider whether there may be more than one psychological profile to describe adolescents who engage in self-harm. Limited past research suggests multiple different profiles. Australian high school students (n = 1,521, age 11–19, 56.4% female) completed an online questionnaire reporting risk and protective factors and self-harm frequency. Non-hierarchical cluster analysis allocated 256 students who reported 6-month self-harm to mutually exclusive profiles based on psychological similarity. Five distinct psychological profiles were identified: 1) Psychologically 'normal'; 2) Anxiety symptoms; 3) Impulsive; 4) Pathological; and 5) Pathological-Impulsive. The proportion of adolescents that reported 11 or more episodes of self-harm varied from 5.7% in the psychologically 'Normal' group to 27.7% in the 'Pathological- Impulsive' group. These results indicate that multiple psychological profiles exist. Adolescents with different risk factors may require disparate strategies for treatment and prevention. Given the variability in profiles, screening may assist in detecting adolescents who self-harm.

Comparing the Psychological Type Profile of Churchgoers and Non-Churchgoers in Italy

A series of recent studies in the U.K. and in Australia has drawn attention to the distinctive psychological type profile of churchgoers compared with non-churchgoers or with the general population. This study extends that research to Italy. A sample of 1,155 Italians between the ages of 14 and 80 completed the Italian form of the Francis Psychological Type Scales (translated and tested within the Salesian Pontifical University) together with a measure of their frequency of church attendance. The data demonstrated that intuitive types and thinking types were under-represented in church congregations in Italy. This pattern is broadly consistent with findings from the U.K. and Australia.

Multiple Modes of Impulsivity in Parkinson's Disease

Cognitive problems are a major factor determining quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease. These include deficits in inhibitory control, ranging from subclinical alterations in decision-making to severe impulse control disorders. Based on preclinical studies, we proposed that Parkinson's disease does not cause a unified disorder of inhibitory control, but rather a set of impulsivity factors with distinct psychological profiles, anatomy and pharmacology. We assessed a broad set of measures of the cognitive, behavioural and temperamental/trait aspects of impulsivity. Sixty adults, including 30 idiopathic Parkinson's disease patients (Hoehn and Yahr stage I–III) and 30 healthy controls, completed a neuropsychological battery, objective behavioural measures and self-report questionnaires. Univariate analyses of variance confirmed group differences in nine out of eleven metrics. We then used factor analysis (principal components method) to identify the structure of impulsivity in Parkinson's disease. Four principal factors were identified, consistent with four different mechanisms of impulsivity, explaining 60% of variance. The factors were related to (1) tests of response conflict, interference and self assessment of impulsive behaviours on the Barrett Impulsivity Scale, (2) tests of motor inhibitory control, and the self-report behavioural approach system, (3) time estimation and delay aversion, and (4) reflection in hypothetical scenarios including temporal discounting. The different test profiles of these four factors were consistent with human and comparative studies of the pharmacology and functional anatomy of impulsivity. Relationships between each factor and clinical and demographic features were examined by regression against factor loadings. Levodopa dose equivalent was associated only with factors (2) and (3). The results confirm that impulsivity is common in Parkinson's disease, even in the absence of impulse control disorders, and that it is not a unitary phenomenon. A better understanding of the structure of impulsivity in Parkinson's disease will support more evidence-based and effective strategies to treat impulsivity.

Emotional dysregulation, alexithymia, and attachment in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures

ObjectivesPsychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs) are poorly understood and difficult to treat. Research and theory suggest that problems with recognizing, acknowledging, and regulating emotional states (i.e., emotional dysregulation) may contribute to the development and maintenance of PNESs. However, there is a lack of well-controlled studies using dedicated measures of emotional regulation with patients with PNESs. The current study sought to address this gap. MethodsForty-three patients with PNESs and 24 with epilepsy completed a postal survey comprising measures of emotional dysregulation (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale), alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale), attachment (Relationship Scales Questionnaire), and psychopathology (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7; Patient Health Questionnaire-9; Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire-20). Cluster analysis was used to identify possible subgroups of patients with PNESs characterized by distinct patterns of emotional dysregulation. ResultsTwo clusters of patients with PNESs were identified. The first (n=11) was characterized by higher levels of psychopathology, somatization, alexithymia, and difficulties with most aspects of emotional regulation (including identifying, accepting, and describing feelings, accessing adaptive regulatory strategies, performing goal-directed behaviors, and controlling feelings and actions) compared with the group with epilepsy. The second (n=32) was characterized by relatively high somatization and depression scores but comparatively normal levels of alexithymia and emotional regulation. ConclusionsThe findings suggest that patients with PNESs can be divided into at least two meaningful subgroups characterized by distinct psychological profiles, only one of which is characterized by significant problems with emotional dysregulation. Further research is needed to determine whether the relatively normal emotional dysregulation and high somatization scores of some patients with PNESs are due to emotional avoidance or more basic problems with perceptual and behavioral control.

Outreach at the County Show: A Study in Psychological Profiling

A series of recent studies have demonstrated that churches tend to attract people with a distinctive psychological profile and fail to reach other psychological types. Data provided by 157 visitors (95 women and 62 men) to the Church Tent at the Three Counties Show 2010, who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scale, demonstrated that the Church Tent enables the Church to make contact with a different range of people from those who routinely attend rural churches.

Effectiveness of a 6-month home-based training program in Prader-Willi patients

In addition to hypotonia and relative sarcopenia, patients with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) show reduced spontaneous physical activity and gait disorders. Scant evidence exists that daily muscle training increases their lean mass and physical activity levels. Whether adequate long-term physical training is feasible and effective in improving muscle function and gait in PWS is still unknown.Eleven adult PWS patients (mean age: 33.8±4.3 years; mean BMI: 43.3±5.9kg/m2) admitted to our hospital were enrolled in this study. During their hospital stay they attended a 2-week rehabilitation program which included supervised exercise sessions. At discharge, Group 1 (6 patients) continued the same exercises at home for 6 months, while Group 2 (5 patients) did not continue home-based training. They were assessed at admission (PRE), at 2 weeks (POST1) and at 6 months (POST2). The assessment consisted of a clinical examination, 3D gait analysis and muscle strength measurement with an isokinetic dynamometer.After 2 weeks of supervised training (POST1), no significant changes in spatial-temporal gait parameters were observed, although significant improvements in ankle dorsal flexion during stance and swing and knee flexor strength were evidenced by 3D gait analysis and dynamometry in all patients.Following 6 months of home training (POST2), Group 1 had showed significant improvements in cadence and reduced knee hyperextension in mid-stance. Ankle plantar and dorsal flexors isokinetic strength had improved significantly at 120°s−1, whereas Group 2 showed no changes in their spatial-temporal and kinematic parameters.The present study reinforces the idea that even in participants with PWS who present with a distinctive psychological profile, long-term group interventions are feasible and effective in improving their overall physical functioning. Providing an effective and simple home-based training program represents a continuum of the rehabilitation process outside the hospital, which is a crucial issue in chronic conditions.
