Yuri Borko – a Founder of European Integration Studies in Russia

Regional integration studies constitute a relatively young area of academic knowledge since regional integration emerged as a new phenomenon in international relations after the Second World War. Professor Yuri Antonovich Borko who is turning 95 in February 2024, is an influential scholar and one of the founders of the Soviet and Russian school of European studies. This article aims to reveal his role in gaining and disseminating of new knowledge about regional integration processes. To do this, the author first traces the main milestones of Professor Borko’s academic path. Then the most important contributions to the literature (based on the criteria of novelty, valuable insight and confirmed forecasts) are pointed out in their interconnection with the international academic advance in the relevant areas of research. Finally, the key achievements of professor Borko in spreading knowledge, graduate and postgraduate teaching are assessed, shedding light on the innovative educational methods employed and illustrating his distinct personality profile. The findings suggest that the most valuable results of professor’s Borko research relate to the areas of the EU social policy, the evolution of the European idea, the interrelation between deepening and widening in the integration process. His reasoning about universal and specific features of the EU experience proves seminal for the national research community. A number of publishing projects and networking activities within the Association of European Studies initiated by professor Borko notably facilitated the establishment of research schools in international relations in Russian regions.

The Comic Adaptation of Lao She’s Short Story “Vision”: A Critical Analysis

Abstract The short story “Vision” stands as a singular romantic narrative within Lao She’s (1899–1966) literary repertoire. Wang Shupeng undertook the adaptation of this tale into gouache comic strips, a rendition that garnered acclaim by securing the Second Prize in the Third National Comic Strip Painting and Creation Contest in China in 1986. Lao She held a particular fondness for this narrative, as it drew inspiration from his own experiences of first love. Adopting a first-person perspective, the author elegantly narrated a tale of love imbued with tragedy, employing a poetic language and employing a stream-of-consciousness narrative technique that underscored its creative ingenuity. In adapting the script for the comic strip rendition, Wang Shupeng accentuated the poignant fate of the protagonists alongside their unwavering perseverance. Through his evocative brushwork, the artist adeptly conveyed the characters’ distinct personalities and internal thoughts, thereby setting a gloomy tonal ambiance for the comic strip’s color palette. Such meticulous efforts culminated in the transformation of “Vision” into a masterpiece within the realm of comic strips.

Peran Kepribadian Muhammadiyah dalam Membangun Etika Sosial dan Kebangsaan

The role of Muhammadiyah personality in building social and national ethics is an important theme in the context of national and state life. Muhammadiyah as an influential Islamic organization in Indonesia has a distinctive personality foundation, namely prioritizing progressive Islamic values, oriented towards education, health and social welfare. This research aims to analyze Muhammadiyah's contribution to the development of social and national ethics through its programs and activities, both in the social, educational and da'wah fields. The method used in this research is qualitative analysis using a literature study approach. The research results show that Muhammadiyah's personality which is based on the principles of progressive Islam has a significant role in building inclusive social ethics and a strong nationality, especially in maintaining national unity and integrity. In conclusion, Muhammadiyah with its personality is able to become an agent of change in encouraging harmonious social ethics and strengthening Indonesia's national identity.

The process of folklorization in contemporaneity: the popular style songs of the composer Dumitru Gheorghiță

Dumitru Gheorghiță (1917-1987) is a distinct personality of the musical culture of Bassarabia. He established himself as an instrumental performer (accordion, trumpet player) and as a composer. He did fundamental studies in the field of music during the interwar period at the Unirea Conservatory in Chisinau (1927-1933). His creation includes symphonic works, pieces for folk music orchestra, choral pieces, lyrical songs, for children, etc. Vocal and instrumental folk music had a special place in his activity as an accordionist and composer. We are particularly interested in his folk-style songs, written on the lyrics of well-known poets from those times or by Dumitru Gheorghiță himself. A large part of these songs, such as Struguraș de pe colină, Frumoase-s nunțile-n colhoz, Cine vine de la deal, Cîntecul miresei, Lung îi druul pîn` la tine etc., became folklorized, that is, they started the path of oral circulation, often the interpreters not knowing who the authors are and supporting their folkloric origin. Studying the folklorization process of these songs reveals interesting aspects of popular culture in contemporaneity.

Impact of Physician Personality Traits on Drug PrescriptionBehaviour

Purpose: Our research investigated how physicians’ personality traits influence and interplay with other factors guiding their prescribing and medical decisions in a branded generics market like India.Design/methodology/approach:Our research is based on a conceptual framework andsurvey questionnaire developed from an extensive literature review on independent variables. This proactive approach enables physicians to promptly address any health issues in cases of burnout, thereby ensuring the continuous delivery of high-quality patient care. With the government making it, mandatory for all pharmaceutical organizations to follow the uniform product promotion code (UPPC) while promoting products to physicians, marketers need to strategically allocate optimal resources and outreach efforts with tailor-made marketing mix elements that are aligned with the preferences and personality traits of physicians, aimed towards enhancing their clinical knowledge, followed by the development of continuous patient initiatives aiming to improve their awareness, can lead to the development of belief with two-way communication among them leading to better treatment adherence and compliance from patients end. Such dedicated efforts initiated by the marketers, in the long term cancultivate trust and empathy between physicians and patients, laying the robust groundwork for patient-centered disease management. This can enable the development of goodwill or a better perception of pharmaceutical organizational promotional efforts by physicians, which is one of the aims of getting physician’s prescriptions for the promoted product.

Environmental preferences in architecture based on personality types

Purpose Individuals show different environmental preferences, often influenced by their personality types. However, instances arise where the alignment of an individual’s personality and the architectural environment disappears, resulting in a mismatch. Consequently, the purpose of this study considers the urgent need to acknowledge and understand the complex interplay between architecture and individual personality traits. Design/methodology/approach The research method is based on the correlation between the variables, which is calculated by the significant assessment of the sample population and with SmartPLS. Finally, the findings and results of the research in relation to personality components and architectural aspects indicate the existence of a relationship. In the end, this study establishes correlations among variables and conclusions are drawn through systematic logical deductions. Findings The research findings underscore a compelling relationship between distinct personality components and various architectural facets. Furthermore, psychological cohesiveness within distinct social cohorts emerges as a pivotal factor influencing the relationship between individuals and architecture. In this regard, the main aspects of environmental preferences (surprise, cryptic, etc.) and personality types (neuroticism, extroversion, etc.) based on their significance and the factors affecting it in sub-components, create direct or indirect relationships. Additionally, the determination of the relationships created in each of these components is specified based on Image 12, and the path of creating architectural patterns can be considered according to that. Originality/value The results of the research show that the correlation between personality and physical components in different social groups is an effective issue in the relationship between human and the environment. It can also be considered as a factor for improving the quality of architectural design and creating a favorable cultural atmosphere in the environment. This issue has caused a connection between architecture and human personality, which creates the ground for improving the relationship between them. Also, architecture is placed by adapting to the personality and psychological needs of people and has an effective role in the quality of their relationships in organizing and expanding the environment.

Personality and Attachment Patterns in Patients with Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures in Saudi Arabia

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate personality and relationship patterns in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) and compare them to patients with epilepsy and healthy controls. Materials and Methods: A total of 68 participants were recruited (mean age = 29.8 ± 9.4 years), including 25 (36.2%) with PNES. The assessment was conducted using the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ), Big Five Inventory (BFI), Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Conflict Behavior Scale (CBS). Results: The IQ of patients with PNES (88.8 ± 13.6) was lower compared to healthy controls (103.5 ± 28.0) but higher than epilepsy patients (84.6 ± 12.9). There were no significant differences between PNES patients and either patients with epilepsy or healthy controls in terms of security, fearfulness, preoccupation, or dismissiveness based on RQ subscale scores. PNES patients tended to be less satisfied (RAS total score, p = 0.10), but did not differ on overall life quality (on SWLS) compared to epilepsy patients and healthy individuals. There were no significant differences in the scores for different attachment styles (secure, fearful, preoccupied, dismissive) among the groups (p > 0.05). Significant differences were found in agreeableness (p = 0.017) and openness (p = 0.009) among the groups. The PNES group exhibits higher scores in Negative—Own (p = 0.009), Positive—Own (p = 0.011), Negative—Partner (p = 0.011), and Positive—Partner (p = 0.028) compared to epilepsy and healthy individuals. No significant differences observed in the Abusive—Own and Abusive—Partner scores (p > 0.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, this study highlights distinct personality traits and relationship patterns in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) compared to epilepsy patients and healthy controls, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address these psychological nuances effectively.

China–ASEAN Tourism Economic Relationship Network: A Geopolitical Risk Perspective

Despite extensive research on the network structure of tourism destinations, literature on the spatial network structure of cross-border tourism–economic connections is relatively limited, specifically the complex geopolitical relationship between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Thus, in this study we explored the relevant characteristics and influencing factors of the spatial structure of tourism economic networks. The results first indicate that the China–ASEAN tourism economic network exhibits distinct stage characteristics, with an ‘N’-shaped fluctuating growth trend, evolving from a point-like network to a multipolar development in spatial structure. In addition, China demonstrates a distinctive personality in the network and occupies a central leadership position. Secondly, an analysis of influencing factors shows that institutional distance and geographic distance have a significant impact on the network. Geopolitical risk plays a notable indirect moderating role in the network through its association with tourism policies and regulations, tourism promotion, and cooperation. This further reveals the diverse pathways through which geopolitical risk affects the network, providing a novel perspective for research on the tourism economic network.

Exploring Personality Profiles as a Source of Phenotypic Diversity in Autistic Children and Adolescents.

This study adopts a person-centered approach to evaluate personality diversity as a source of interpersonal variability in autistic children and adolescents, and how personality subgroup membership relates to variability in autistic characteristics, social-emotional presentations, and parenting outcomes. Latent Profile Analysis was used to analyze 569 parent reports on a child-based Five-Factor-Model personality measure (aged 6-18 years; Mage = 11.8 years, SD = 3.1; 70% boys). Four distinct personality profile groups were identified, showing varying levels in the low to average range of all five personality domains. All groups scored lowest on Extraversion and Emotional Stability. They differed the most in Imagination and the least in Emotional Stability. Group 1 (n = 72) exhibited the lowest mean-level scores on all five domains, whereas Group 4 (n = 90) had the highest domain scores. Group 2 (n = 307) and Group 3 (n = 100) showed more diverse patterns. Group membership was meaningfully associated with variation in characteristics of social interaction and communication, internalizing, externalizing, and attentional problems, psychosocial strengths, and positive parenting strategies. Only modest group differences were found in parenting stress. All groups had similar scores on repetitive and restrictive behaviors. These findings help to better understand and support natural subgroups within the autism phenotype by exploring shared personality attributes.

Representing the Needs of Rural Caregivers of People Living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias through User Personas

Abstract Background and Objectives Rural caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) face unique caregiving challenges. Current interventions do not address many of the systemic barriers experienced by rural ADRD caregivers, including barriers related to geography, healthcare services access, and financial insecurity. The objective of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of rural ADRD caregivers’ needs, strengths, and strategies in obtaining caregiving support, and to represent these attributes in the form of personas that can be used to design interventions for rural ADRD caregivers. Research Design and Methods In this qualitative user-centered design study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with self-identified caregivers of people living with ADRD in rural areas. Interview data was copied to a virtual whiteboard, and affinity diagramming was used to confirm a priori attributes and yield inductive attributes relevant to rural ADRD caregivers. Attributes were assigned to personas, which were then validated through team-based discussion, consultation with a study advisory board, and review by rural caregivers and community partners. Results Analyses of N=19 interviews yielded seven inductive attributes relevant to rural ADRD caregivers of persons living with ADRD and five distinct personas: Capable Christine, Connected Connie, Isolated Irene, Learning Larry, and Discerning Dan. Personas differed on inductive attributes including financial security, subjective rurality, attitudes, connectedness, and information behavior, including preferences for traditional versus technology-based information seeking. Discussion and Implications The personas identified in the present study can be used as tools to represent and efficiently communicate the intersection and interaction of attributes relevant to designing interventions and technologies to meet the support needs of rural ADRD caregivers.

Unveiling personality traits through Bangla speech using Morlet wavelet transformation and BiG

Speech serves as a potent medium for expressing a wide array of psychologically significant attributes. While earlier research on deducing personality traits from user-generated speech predominantly focused on other languages, there is a noticeable absence of prior studies and datasets for automatically assessing user personalities from Bangla speech. In this paper, our objective is to bridge the research gap by generating speech samples, each imbued with distinct personality profiles. These personality impressions are subsequently linked to OCEAN (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) personality traits. To gauge accuracy, human evaluators, unaware of the speaker’s identity, assess these five personality factors. The dataset is predominantly composed of around 90% content sourced from online Bangla newspapers, with the remaining 10% originating from renowned Bangla novels. We perform feature level fusion by combining MFCCs with LPC features to set MELP and MEWLP features. We introduce MoMF feature extraction method by transforming Morlet wavelet and fusing MFCCs feature. We develop two soft voting ensemble models, DistilRo (based on DistilBERT and RoBERTa) and BiG (based on Bi-LSTM and GRU), for personality classification in speech-to-text and speech modalities, respectively. The DistilRo model has gained F-1 score 89% in speech-to-text and the BiG model has gained F-1 score 90% in speech modality.

Latent profile of personality traits for American older adults and its transition during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impact of COVID-19 on older adults' personality development is essential for emergency management but under-researched. This study seeks to explore the personality profiles of older adults living in the United States and how these profiles transitioned during the pandemic. Longitudinal data were collected from 3,550 adults aged 60 and older who participated in both the 2016 and 2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Survey (61.18% female, mean age 65.85 in 2016). Personality traits were assessed using the Midlife Development Inventory. COVID-19-related experiences including pandemic concerns, restricted healthcare access, financial instability, work challenges, disrupted social connections, and mutual aid behaviors. Latent Profile Analysis and Transition Analysis were used for analysis. Three distinct personality profiles were identified: Well-adjusted, Moderate-adjusted, and Poor-adjusted. About 42% of respondents experienced personality changes during the pandemic. Higher levels of COVID-19 concern were linked to an increased likelihood of transitioning to Poor-adjusted from Moderate (OR=1.06, p<0.05) or Well-adjusted (OR=1.05, p<0.01). Challenges such as healthcare delays and financial hardships hindered transitions from Poor- to Moderate-adjusted (Healthcare delay: OR=0.39, p<0.05; Financial hardships: OR=0.67, p<0.05) but increased the likelihood of Moderate-adjusted individuals transitioning to Poor-adjusted (Healthcare delay: OR=1.46, p<0.05; Financial hardships: OR=1.51, p<0.05). However, Poor-adjusted individuals who provided help to others were more likely to transition to Moderate-adjusted (OR=2.71, p<0.01). Personality transitions during crisis are significant among older adults. Future interventions should focus on addressing traumatic concerns, encouraging helping behaviors, and mitigating healthcare and financial challenges to support older adults' personality development during crisis.

The relationship between personality traits, metacognition and professional commitment in Chinese nursing students: a cross-sectional study.

Professional commitment of nursing students is closely related to the stability of the nursing team. Personality traits and metacognition may be related to professional commitment. We investigate the association between Big Five personality, metacognition, and professional commitment among nursing students, and further explore whether Big Five personality modifies the association between metacognition and professional commitment. From December 2023 to January 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 3631 nursing students from 17 universities in China through the online platform Sojump.com by cluster sampling method and using the general information questionnaire, BFI-44 (Big Five Inventory 44) scale, metacognition scale and professional commitment scale to investigate their demographic data, personality traits, level of metacognition and level of professional commitment. Latent profile analysis was employed to identify optimal categories of personality traits. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the personality traits and professional commitment, as well as metacognition and professional commitment in all participants and participants with different personality traits subgroups, adjusting for potential covariates. Furthermore, the potential mediating role of metacognition between personality traits and professional commitment was also investigated. Three distinct personality traits were identified: sensitive-negative personality (65.2%), ordinary personality (26.6%), and open-positive personality (8.2%). Compared with nursing students with sensitive-negative personality, nursing students with ordinary personality and open-positive personality were associated with professional commitment, respectively [OR (95% CI): 7.01 (5.99-8.20), 21.09 (15.43-28.83)]. The p value for trend of personality and professional commitment was < 0.001. Metacognition was associated with professional commitment [OR (95% CI): 5.95 (5.20-6.81); p < 0.001]. Personality traits could modify the association between metacognition and professional commitment (pinteraction = 0.009). The mediating role of metacognition between Big Five personality and professional commitment has also been verified. Personality traits and metacognition of nursing students need to be paid attention to, and interventions based on metacognition may help nursing students with different personality traits to improve their professional commitment level.

Latent personality profiles of analog astronauts: An unsupervised clustering method analysis

The selection of astronauts for space missions is an important process that involves the assessment of multiple factors, including personality traits. Previous studies have corroborated that these traits exert a significant influence on the performance and adaptation of the crew during the execution of space missions. In this study, International Personality Item Pool - NEO – 120 (IPIP-120) was used to assess the personality of participants in a sample of 43 analog astronauts who took part in 9 different analog missions between 2022 and 2023. The objective was to identify specific personality profiles among the analog astronauts using the unsupervised k-means clustering method. The centroids of each cluster were analyzed to describe distinctive personality profiles. The results revealed the existence of two distinct personality clusters among the analog astronauts. The first cluster showed a greater propensity toward adventure, intellect, goal striving, extroversion, and cooperation. In contrast, the second cluster exhibited lower scores on these traits. The identification of these two differentiated personality profiles reinforces the importance of personality assessment as a valuable tool in the astronaut selection process. Furthermore, the application of the k-means method demonstrates its utility as an effective technique for identifying underlying patterns in complex datasets. These findings may inform future astronaut selection strategies, contributing to the formation of more effective and cohesive teams for space missions.

Research on Enhancing the Affinity of Ideological and Political Theory Courses in Private Universities in the New Era

In the new era, the ideological and political theory courses in private colleges and universities have the problem of insufficient affinity. College students in the new era have distinct personalities, psychology, and value orientations, but some college students feel distant from ideological and political theory courses. They do not pay attention to, understand, or even resist "big concepts" and "big propositions" such as the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics, as well as the lofty ideals and beliefs. Therefore, effective countermeasures must be formed to create a warm ideological and political classroom from the aspects of teaching content, teaching methods, teaching practice, and teacher team building, so as to increase the closeness of ideological and political theory courses among college students. Only in this way can the spirit of patriotism take root in the hearts of students and give play to the positive influence of ideological and political theory courses on the values of young college students.

Digital political communication through a gender lens: discourses, themes, and inclusive language. A case study of two gender-balanced elections in Andalusia: 2018 and 2022

Electoral campaigns are particularly significant moments for identifying the available political options. Social media campaigns have become universal, and every candidate seeks to showcase their proposals and distinct political personality. The main goal of this article is to examine electoral political communication on social media platforms through a gender perspective. We analyze the messages posted on X (formerly Twitter) by candidates during the last two election campaigns in Andalusia. With a total sample of 2,196 posts, we applied quantitative content analysis and binary logistic regression, in addition to qualitative discourse análisis to a subset of the sample. We aim to identify how, where, when and by whom issues pertaining to women as a collective, feminism, gender, or the use of egalitarian language are introduced into two campaigns characterized by gender-balanced representation of candidates. Our findings indicate a limited use of inclusive language and infrequent foregrounding of women in discourse. Nonetheless, gender is a significant explanatory factor for a more inclusive communication style toward women, alongside an explicit emphasis on addressing policies affecting women.

The impacts of microplastics on zebrafish behavior depend on initial personality state

Microplastic pollution is associated with inflammation, gut dysbiosis and behavioral changes in fish. Fish have distinct personality traits but the role of personality in behavioral toxicology is rarely considered. We classified zebrafish on four behavioral axes: boldness, anxiety, sociability and exploration tendency then exposed them to low- or high- concentrations of two types of polyethylene microplastics (low- and high-density) for 28 days. Behaviors, antioxidant enzymes (catalase and superoxide dismutase), and gut microbiome were then measured. There were direct effects of microplastics on boldness, anxiety and sociability. However, fish retained their initial behavioral tendencies. Exposure to all microplastic treatments reduced average swimming speed and decreased the time spent motionless. Microplastic exposure did not affect antioxidant enzymes but did cause significant changes in the composition of the gut microbiome. This study demonstrates that environmentally realistic concentrations of microplastics can alter fish behavior, but much of the variance in response can be explained by personality.

Research on the History of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Film Creation

As a leading figure in Taiwan’s “new film movement”, Hou Hsiao-hsien perfectly integrated the Western author’s film art tradition since the Italian neorealist film with the aesthetic purview of traditional Chinese culture and created the Chinese author’s film style. Hou Hsiao-hsien’s film works are very rational and connotation, with a strong documentary style and a sense of social distress, full of local flavor, and containing concern for Taiwan society. The film works have distinct personality and unique style, creating “Hou’s” artistic style through the lens language. This article will analyze Hou Hsiao-hsien’s film creation history from two aspects: the theme change and film style characteristics.

Personality matters – The interplay between consistent individual differences and mouse welfare in female C57BL6/J mice

To ensure good welfare of animals in human hands, it is essential to modify housing conditions according to the animals’ needs. Traditionally, the effects of such modifications are studied by means of group-level comparisons, thereby widely neglecting consistent inter-individual differences (i.e., so-called ‘animal personalities’). However, as animals with distinct personality types might differ in their environmental needs and hence react differently to the same environment, such systematic inter-individual differences might have important welfare consequences. This becomes particularly apparent under laboratory conditions, where animals are typically housed under highly standardized and barren environments. Against this background, we here aim to investigate personality-dependent welfare consequences in response to different housing conditions in laboratory mice. Female C57BL/6J mice were characterized for their personality type in exploration behavior and the most and the least explorative individuals were set up in either simple or in highly complex housing conditions that included constantly changing environmental enrichment items. We monitored individual welfare by studying behavioral, physiological, and immunological outcome measures. Besides personality-dependent differences in immune parameters and overall improved welfare under complex housing conditions, we indeed found hints that individual mice were differently affected in their welfare depending on the specific combination of personality type and housing condition. Specifically, highly explorative mice appeared to be more adversely affected by simple housing, but also profited more from complex housing compared to low explorative mice. These findings indicate that welfare promoting adjustments do not necessarily benefit all individuals equally and therefore, call for a shift of perspectives in the evaluation of animal welfare.

Enhancing MBTI Personality Prediction from Text Data with Advance Word Embedding Technique.

Understanding human personality traits is crucial for various domains, including psychology, education, and human resources. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a widely recognized psychological assessment tool, categorizing individuals into one of sixteen distinct personality types. The existing methodologies, which primarily relied on Word2Vec embeddings and traditional machine learning models, showed promise but left room for improvement. To address this problem, this research focused on enhancing Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality prediction from text data through advanced word-embedding techniques, specifically GloVe and BERT. The research investigates the effectiveness of various Machine Learning Classifiers, including Random Forest, XGBoost, LinearSVC, SGD, Logistic Regression, and CatBoost, in predicting MBTI personality types. Additionally, the impact of preprocessing techniques such as text cleaning, tokenization, TF-IDF vectorization, GloVe, and BERT embeddings on classification performance is examined. Furthermore, the research explores strategies for addressing class imbalance through upsampling techniques. Results indicate high accuracy and performance across multiple classifiers, with XGBoost achieving the highest accuracy of 97.33%. The analysis of MBTI dimensions reveals nuanced insights into the classifiers' ability to capture specific personality traits.
