SlugAtlas, a histological and 3D online resource of the land slugs Deroceras laeve and Ambigolimax valentianus.

Due to their distinctive anatomical characteristics, land slugs are appealing research subjects from a variety of angles, including stem cell biology, regeneration, embryonic development, allometry, and neurophysiology. Here we present SlugAtlas, an anatomical and histological online resource of the land slugs Deroceras laeve and Ambigolimax valentianus. The atlas is composed of series of histological sections on the horizontal, sagittal, and transversal planes for both species with 3D viewing tools of their major organs. The atlas was used in this work for a comparative analysis of the major organs and tissues of these two species. We provide a comprehensive histological description of them and an explanation of novel findings of unique features of their anatomy. For D. laeve, we additionally studied its ability for degrowth and regrowth, a feature that characterizes animals with high regeneration potential and obtained initial results on the study of the regeneration of its tail. SlugAtlas is a resource that is also built to accommodate future growth and, along with the experimental techniques that we have developed, will provide the foundation for research projects in a variety of biological domains.

Analysis of anterior segment in primary angle closure suspect with deep learning models

ObjectiveTo analyze primary angle closure suspect (PACS) patients’ anatomical characteristics of anterior chamber configuration, and to establish artificial intelligence (AI)-aided diagnostic system for PACS screening.MethodsA total of 1668 scans of 839 patients were included in this cross-sectional study. The subjects were divided into two groups: PACS group and normal group. With anterior segment optical coherence tomography scans, the anatomical diversity between two groups was compared, and anterior segment structure features of PACS were extracted. Then, AI-aided diagnostic system was constructed, which based different algorithms such as classification and regression tree (CART), random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR), VGG-16 and Alexnet. Then the diagnostic efficiencies of different algorithms were evaluated, and compared with junior physicians and experienced ophthalmologists.ResultsRF [sensitivity (Se) = 0.84; specificity (Sp) = 0.92; positive predict value (PPV) = 0.82; negative predict value (NPV) = 0.95; area under the curve (AUC) = 0.90] and CART (Se = 0.76, Sp = 0.93, PPV = 0.85, NPV = 0.92, AUC = 0.90) showed better performance than LR (Se = 0.68, Sp = 0.91, PPV = 0.79, NPV = 0.90, AUC = 0.86). In convolutional neural networks (CNN), Alexnet (Se = 0.83, Sp = 0.95, PPV = 0.92, NPV = 0.87, AUC = 0.85) was better than VGG-16 (Se = 0.84, Sp = 0.90, PPV = 0.85, NPV = 0.90, AUC = 0.79). The performance of 2 CNN algorithms was better than 5 junior physicians, and the mean value of diagnostic indicators of 2 CNN algorithm was similar to experienced ophthalmologists.ConclusionPACS patients have distinct anatomical characteristics compared with health controls. AI models for PACS screening are reliable and powerful, equivalent to experienced ophthalmologists.

Imaging of Sacroiliac Pain: The Current State-of-the-Art.

Pain in the sacroiliac (SI) region is a common clinical manifestation, often caused by diseases involving the SI joints. This is typically due to inflammation or degenerative changes, while infections or cancer are less frequent causes. The SI joint is challenging to image accurately because of its distinct anatomical characteristics. For an accurate diagnosis, conventional radiography often needs to be supplemented with more precise methods such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT). Sacroiliitis, a common presenting feature of axial spondyloarthritis (axial SpA), manifests as bone marrow edema, erosions, sclerosis, and joint space narrowing. Septic sacroiliitis and repetitive stress injuries in sports can also cause changes resembling inflammatory sacroiliitis. Other conditions, such as osteitis condensans ilii (OCI), can mimic the radiologic characteristics of sacroiliitis. Inflammatory lesions are diagnosed by concurrent erosions, hyperostosis, and ankylosis. Ligament ossifications or mechanical stress can also result in arthritic disorders. Determining the exact diagnosis can be aided by the distribution of the lesions. Inflammatory lesions can affect any part of the articulation, including the inferior and posterior portions. Mechanical lesions, such as those seen in OCI, often occur in the anterior middle region of the joint. In cases of idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, ligament ossification is found at the joint borders. This pictorial essay describes common SI joint problems, illustrated with multimodal imaging data. We, also, discuss strategies for selecting the best imaging modalities, along with imaging pitfalls, key points, and approaches for treating patients with suspected inflammatory back pain.

A mathematical model to predict “low-lying” posterior communicating artery aneurysms in neurosurgical practice

“Low-lying” posterior communicating artery (PCoA) aneurysms require great attention in surgical clipping due to their distinct anatomical characteristics. In this study, we propose an easy method to immediately recognize “low-lying” PCoA aneurysms in neurosurgical practice. A total of 89 cases with “low-lying” PCoA aneurysms were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent preoperative digital subtraction angiography (DSA) examinations and microsurgical clipping. Cases were classified into the “low-lying” and regular groups based on intraoperative findings. The distance- and angle-relevant parameters that reflected the relative location of the aneurysms and tortuosity of the internal carotid artery were measured using 3D-DSA images. The data were sequentially integrated into a mathematical analysis to obtain the prediction model. Finally, we proposed a novel mathematical formula to preoperatively predict the existence of “low-lying” PCoA aneurysms with great accuracy. Neurosurgeons might benefit from this model, which enables them to directly identify “low-lying” PCoA aneurysms and make appropriate surgical decisions accordingly.

NYMPHA, a natural product for the conservation of ancient wood

In recent years, there has been a significant interest on sustainability and health-safety across various domains. Notably, many traditional chemicals employed in the preservation of Cultural Heritage pose environmental and human health risks. The NYMPHA project aimed to develop an eco-friendly solution using microalgae-derived polysaccharides to remove biological patinas from cultural heritage wooden materials, addressing sustainability and health concerns. To validate its efficacy, the product underwent testing on diverse woods such as silver fir, beech, and sessile oak, selected for their distinct anatomical characteristics. The analytical methodology involves three key steps: 1) determining the optimal extraction and application method through spectro-colorimetric measures and UV imaging; 2) evaluating surface color stability; and 3) assessing the product's effectiveness before and after exposure to a biological attack using spectro-colorimetry. Results indicate that the NYMPHA product can induce a color variation on some wood surfaces. Moreover, although it is reported that algae can have biocidal effects, in this experiment, this action is not observed probably due to the absence of sulphates in the polysaccharide molecule extracted from this specific strain. This emphasizes the necessity for further research and to explore new solutions beyond controlled laboratory conditions, specifically on naturally degraded materials.

Comparison of downsizing strategy (HANGZHOU Solution) and standard annulus sizing strategy in type 0 bicuspid aortic stenosis patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement: Rationale and design of a randomized clinical trial

BackgroundThere has not been a consensus on the prothesis sizing strategy in type 0 bicuspid aortic stenosis (AS) patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Modifications to standard annular sizing strategies might be required due to the distinct anatomical characteristics. We have devised a Down Sizing Strategy for TAVR using a self-expanding valve specifically for patients with type 0 bicuspid AS. The primary aim of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of Down Sizing Strategy with the Standard Annulus Sizing Strategy in TAVR for patients with type 0 bicuspid AS. Trial designIt is a prospective, multi-center, superiority, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial comparing the Down Sizing and Standard Annulus Sizing Strategy in patients with type 0 bicuspid aortic stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Eligible participants will include patients with severe type 0 bicuspid AS, as defined by criteria such as mean gradient across aortic valve ≥40 mmHg, peak aortic jet velocity ≥4.0 m/s, aortic valve area (AVA) ≤1.0 cm², or AVA index ≤0.6 cm2/m2. These patients will be randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, to either the Down Sizing Strategy group or the Standard Sizing Strategy group. In the Down Sizing Strategy group, a valve one size smaller will be implanted if the “waist sign” manifests along with less than mild regurgitation during balloon pre-dilatation. The primary end point of the study is a composite of VARC-3 defined device success, absence of both permanent pacemaker implantation due to high-degree atrioventricular block and new-onset complete left bundle branch block. ConclusionThis study will compare the safety and efficacy of Down Sizing Strategy with the Standard Annulus Sizing Strategy and provide valuable insights into the optimal approach for sizing in TAVR patients with type 0 bicuspid AS. We hypothesize that the Down Sizing Strategy will demonstrate superiority when compared to the Standard Annulus Sizing Strategy. Application of Inflammatory Vital Pulp Therapy in the Treatment of Apical Periodontitis in a deciduous Molar: A Case Report

Due to the distinct anatomical characteristics of deciduous teeth, they are particularly susceptible to apical periodontitis when afflicted by deep caries or other endodontic diseases. Conventional, root canal therapy (RCT) has served as the standard treatment protocol all the time by the most pediatric dentists. However, researchers try to find another possible alternative mothods because of its some drawbacks. Hence this report introduces a groundbreaking therapeutic modality - inflammatory vital pulp therapy (IVPT) - which has proven effective in treating apical periodontitis in a deciduous molar. The objective of this study was to assess the practicality and efficacy of IVPT in managing apical periodontitis in deciduous teeth. Through rigorous patient examination and evaluation, IVPT was adopted as the treatment plan, followed by meticulous long-term follow-up observations. The outcomes revealed remarkable clinical improvements, with the periapical lesion healing seamlessly without any complications. Notably, the development of the permanent tooth embryo remained undisturbed and progressed as expected. In summary, this study validates the efficacy of IVPT in treating apical periodontitis in deciduous teeth, opening a new avenue for the management of deciduous tooth diseases. The clinical utilization of this method is anticipated to enhance treatment experiences and prognostic outcomes for patients with deciduous tooth pathologies.

The mechanics of congenital heart disease: from a morphological trait to the functional echocardiographic evaluation.

Advances in pediatric cardiac surgery have resulted in a recent growing epidemic of children and young adults with congenital heart diseases (CHDs). In these patients, congenital defects themselves, surgical operations and remaining lesions may alter cardiac anatomy and impact the mechanical performance of both ventricles. Cardiac function significantly influences outcomes in CHDs, necessitating regular patient follow-up to detect clinical changes and relevant risk factors. Echocardiography remains the primary imaging method for CHDs, but clinicians must understand patients' unique anatomies as different CHDs exhibit distinct anatomical characteristics affecting cardiac mechanics. Additionally, the use of myocardial deformation imaging and 3D echocardiography has gained popularity for enhanced assessment of cardiac function and anatomy. This paper discusses the role of echocardiography in evaluating cardiac mechanics in most significant CHDs, particularly its ability to accommodate and interpret the inherent anatomical substrate in these conditions.

Nanotechnology-based Intranasal Drug Delivery Systems: A Review

An experimental study has focused on developing a different approach to systemic oral along with parenteral administration in order to overcome their common drawbacks, including hepatic first-pass, which reduces drug bioavailability following oral administration, off-target effects, low patient compliance, along with a slow onset of pharmacological action through first-aid cases. Novel drug delivery systems (DDS), mostly composed of polymers and biocompatible lipid materials, have significantly boosted this sector in recent years. The previously intranasal (IN) method of delivery is an acceptable non-invasive option. It is ideal for self-administration since the medication quickly enters the circulation, eliminating the initial pass effect, and it may additionally reach the brain’s cortex directly by crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The combination of the IN route alongside DDS can, therefore, become a successful method for regulated drug administration, particularly when a rapid impact is sought or required. This study seeks to analyze the scientific literature on IN-DDS and its various routes for consumption (systemic, topical, pulmonary, and nose-to-brain). In this regard, the intranasal route offers a viable pathway for medication delivery reaching the brain because of its distinct anatomical characteristics. Nanoparticle-based technologies, in particular, have proven a remarkable ability to overcome the limitations of the intranasal route to induce drug accumulation throughout the brain despite avoiding systemic dissemination

Can Anatomical Differences Contribute to the Etiology of Danis-Weber Type B Lateral Malleolus Fractures?

Introduction Lateral malleolus fractures are among the most common ankle fractures, but the anatomical factors that may predispose individuals to this specific type of fracture are not fully understood. This study aims to explore whether distinct anatomical characteristics of the ankle joint contribute to an increased susceptibility to lateral malleolar fractures. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 73 patients diagnosed with isolated lateral malleolar fractures between 2020 and 2023. An array of radiologic parameters, including distal tibial articular surface (DTAS) angle, bimalleolar tilt (BMT), medial malleolar length (MML), lateral malleolar length (LML), medial malleolar relative length (MMRL), lateral malleolar relative length (LMRL), medial malleolar slip angle (MMSA), talocrural angle (TCA), anterior inclination of the tibia (AI), and fibular position (FP), were meticulously measured on anteroposterior and lateral ankle radiographs for each study participant. We also measured the same parameters in 126 individuals who had not experienced an ankle fracture for comparison. Results Statistically significant differences were observed between the fracture group and the control group for DTAS angle, BMT, MML, MMRL, LMRL, TCA, AI, and FP (p<.05). Conversely, LML and MMSA displayed no significant variations between the two groups (p=0.745 and p=0.623). Effect sizes were notably large for DTAS and TCA, medium for MMRL, BMT, and AI, and small for LMRL, MML, and FP. Conclusion Our findings indicate an increased risk of lateral malleolus fractures in individuals with a relatively longer medial malleolus, a valgus-oriented ankle, reduced anterior inclination of the tibia, and an anteriorly positioned fibula. Taking protective measures during risky activities in individuals with these differences may help to prevent fractures.

Clustering the cortical laminae: in vivo parcellation

The laminar microstructure of the cerebral cortex has distinct anatomical characteristics of the development, function, connectivity, and even various pathologies of the brain. In recent years, multiple neuroimaging studies have utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) relaxometry to visualize and explore this intricate microstructure, successfully delineating the cortical laminar components. Despite this progress, T1 is still primarily considered a direct measure of myeloarchitecture (myelin content), rather than a probe of tissue cytoarchitecture (cellular composition). This study aims to offer a robust, whole-brain validation of T1 imaging as a practical and effective tool for exploring the laminar composition of the cortex. To do so, we cluster complex microstructural cortical datasets of both human (N = 30) and macaque (N = 1) brains using an adaptation of an algorithm for clustering cell omics profiles. The resulting cluster patterns are then compared to established atlases of cytoarchitectonic features, exhibiting significant correspondence in both species. Lastly, we demonstrate the expanded applicability of T1 imaging by exploring some of the cytoarchitectonic features behind various unique skillsets, such as musicality and athleticism.

Anatomical and histochemical characterization of vegetative organs of Brazilian species of Renealmia (Zingiberaceae)

Abstract Renealmia comprises approximately 85 herbaceous and rhizomatous plants in Africa and America known for their metabolite diversity. This study characterized the anatomy and histochemistry of the vegetative organs of three native Brazilian Renealmia species, R. breviscapa and R. nicolaioides, collected from the Amazon Forest in Acre and R. chrysotricha from the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro. Samples were fixed and processed using conventional plant anatomy and micromorphology techniques, including histochemical tests to identify classes of compounds in vegetative organs. Characteristics including oil idioblasts, dorsiventral leaf structure, tetracytic stomata, unicellular trichomes, and prismatic crystals were common among the studied species of Renealmia, and thus significant for the family. Distinctive characteristics were identified in the vegetative organs of the three species, including the cellular distribution of root phloem, covering of rhizome tissue, different types and distributions of idioblasts and phenolic trichomes in rhizomes and leaves, presence or absence of petiole, and subepidermal layer in the intercostal region of leaves. Mineral content importance as a diagnostic characteristic of the genus is also emphasized. The results of this study advance the understanding of the distinctive anatomical characteristics of the three species of Renealmia in different environments, two in the Atlantic Forest and one in the Amazon Forest.

Two-step hot isostatic pressing densification achieved non-porous fully-densified wood with enhanced physical and mechanical properties

A new two-step densification method for wooden materials entitled hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is proposed. This method has the advantage over previous densification methods that can achieved almost the full densification of wood, reaching values up to 1.47 kg/m3, which exceeds any value ever reported for a hardwood species. Furthermore, it can preserve about 35% of the original volume, in comparison to other methods which typically can preserve only 20% of the volume. Although not tested in this investigation, in principle, the HIP method should be capable of densifying any shape of wood including circular and tubular cross sections because the main densification mechanism is based on gas pressure that is equally exerted in the entire surface, rather than localized mechanical compression, which can only be effective with rectangular cross sections. In the first stage of the two-step proposed method, the compressive strength of the anatomical wood structure is reduced by delignification, and, in the second, a full densification is achieved by hot isostatic pressing under argon atmosphere. Three tropical hardwood species with distinct anatomical characteristics and properties were used to test the method. The HIP-densified wood’s microstructural, chemical, physical, and mechanical properties were assessed. Apart from the high densification values and volume preservation, the results indicate that proposed method was effective for all the tested species, showing homogenous density patterns, stable densification without noticeable shape recovery, and enhanced mechanical properties. Future research should test the HIP method in softwoods and consider the ring orientation in order to enhance the control of the densified geometry.

Subregional Differences in Medium Spiny Neuron Intrinsic Excitability Properties between Nucleus Accumbens Core and Shell in Male Rats

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is known for its central role in reward and motivation (Day and Carelli, 2007; Floresco, 2015; Salgado and Kaplitt, 2015). Decades of research on the cellular arrangement, density, and connectivity of the NAc have identified two main subregions known as the core and shell (Záborszky et al., 1985; Berendse and Groenewegen, 1990; Zahm and Heimer, 1990). Although anatomically and functionally different, both the NAc core and shell are mainly comprised of GABAergic projection neurons known as medium spiny neurons (MSNs) (Matamales et al., 2009). Several studies have identified key morphologic differences between core and shell MSNs (Meredith et al., 1992; Forlano and Woolley, 2010) but few studies have directly addressed how core and shell MSNs differ in their intrinsic excitability (Pennartz et al., 1992; O'Donnell and Grace, 1993). Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in slices prepared from naive and rewarded male rats, we found that MSNs in the NAc shell were significantly more excitable than MSNs in the NAc core in both groups. In the shell, MSNs had significantly greater input resistance, lower cell capacitance, and a greater sag. This was accompanied by a lower action potential current threshold, a greater number of action potentials, and faster firing frequency compared with core MSNs. These subregional differences in intrinsic excitability could provide a potential physiological link to the distinct anatomic characteristics of core and shell MSNs and to their distinct functional roles in reward learning (Zahm, 1999; Ito and Hayen, 2011; Saddoris et al., 2015; West and Carelli, 2016).

Leaf Anatomical Characteristics of Nepenthes Species in Western Sarawak, Borneo

The dimorphism and phenotypic plasticity of genus Nepenthes is taxonomically challenging. They depicted a variety of pitcher morphological features that often lead to difficulty in the species delineation. However, there is an alternative that could aid to distinguish the Nepenthes species which is by observing the anatomical characteristics of their leaves. Despite few researches had reported the comparative study on leaf anatomy of certain Nepenthes species, yet, there are very scarce data showing other distinct anatomical characteristics that could be used to differentiate the Nepenthes species especially in the western of Sarawak. Hence, this research was performed to identify anatomical characteristics that could be useful taxonomic tools for Nepenthes species identification. There are nine species with one variety and three natural hybrids were included in the study namely, Nepenthes albomarginata Lobb, N. ampullaria Jack, N. gracilis Korth, N. hirsuta Hook. f., N. hispida Beck, N. mirabilis (Lour.) Druce, N. mirabilis var. echinostoma (Hook. f.) J. H. Adam &amp; Wilcock, N. nazreeana sp. nov. ined., N. rafflesiana Jack, N. reinwardtiana Miq., N. x trichocarpa Miq, N. x hookeriana Lindl, and N. x kuchingensis Sh. Kurata. The anatomical data of leaves, i.e stomatal complex type, stomatal size and density, type of anticlinal walls, type of glandular structures and others were analysed, tabulated and discussed.

Comparative leaf anatomy of ten Nepenthes L. species (Nepenthaceae) from Peninsular Malaysia

The genus Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) in Peninsular Malaysia includes fourteen species that can be found from the sea-level to over 1000 m in the mountains. Our observation indicated that Nepenthes can be found in five major habitat types: specifically in tropical lowland evergreen rain forest, heath forest, peat swamp forest, montane forest, and limestone forest. Their leaves have several anatomical characters that remain underexplored. There were specific differences between species that could be potential identification characters. The following anatomical characteristics were explored for their diagnostic value and comprised of ten distinct anatomical characteristics in Nepenthes, viz., density and stomatal index (SI), hypodermis cell – cell layers, occurrence of fiber groups mixed with the hypodermis cells, adaxial cuticle thickness, vascular bundle arrangement, midrib outline shape, venation plasticity, druses appearance and appendage/trichome type.

The Anatomical and Clinical Significance of the Superior Laryngeal Nerve.

This study summarizes the anatomical features of the superior laryngeal nerve in Chinese to enable the rapid location of the superior laryngeal nerve during an operation. Retrospective analysis of anatomical data. Hangzhou First People's Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University. A total of 71 embalmed human cadavers (132 heminecks) were examined over 3 months. The length and diameter of the internal and external branches of the superior laryngeal nerve and their relationships with different landmarks were recorded. The total length of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve was 23.4 ± 6.9 mm. The length of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve was 47.7 ± 11.0 mm. Considering the midpoint of the lower edge of the thyroid cartilage as the starting point and using that edge as a horizontal line, when the entry point is above that line, the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve can be found within 41.1 mm and at an angle of 57.2°. When the entry point is below the lower edge of the thyroid cartilage, the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve can be found within 34.0 mm and at an angle of 36.5°. The superior laryngeal nerve in Chinese people has distinct anatomical characteristics. This article provides a new method of quickly locating the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve during the operation, which can reduce the probability of damaging the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve.

Multimodal Imaging Analysis of Acute Syphilitic Posterior Placoid Chorioretinitis: A Case Report.

The authors report a multimodal imaging analysis of a case of acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC) occurring in a 51-year-old man. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.5 and 0.8 in the right and left eyes, respectively. The authors performed spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography. All of the examinations were suggestive of the diagnosis of ASPPC, a rare manifestation of syphilis that has distinctive anatomical characteristics that are detectable early on with multimodal imaging. Moreover, serological tests were positive for syphilis infection, so the patient received intravenous penicillin G for 14 days. Final BCVA was 1.0 in the right eye and 0.9 in the left eye. The newer classifications of the chiari malformations with clarifications: An anatomical review.

In 1891, Hans Chiari described a group of congenital hindbrain anomalies, which were eventually named after him. He classified these malformations into three types (Chiari malformations I, II, and III), and four years later added the Chiari IV malformation. However, numerous reports across the literature do not seem to fit Chiari's original descriptions of these malformations, so researchers have been encouraged to propose new classifications to encompass these variants (e.g., Chiari 0, Chiari1.5, and Chiari 3.5 malformations). Moreover, there is a continued misunderstanding and misuse of the term "Chiari IV malformation." Therefore, the current review intended to describe anatomical, pathophysiological, and clinical aspects of the newer classifications with clarifications of the Chiari malformations. We reviewed available literature about Chiari malformations and their variants using "PubMed" and "Google Scholar." We also looked into the term Chiari IV, clarifying its original description and citing examples where the term has been used erroneously. References in the reviewed articles were searched manually. Variants of the originally described Chiari malformations are termed Chiari 0, Chiari 1.5, and Chiari 3.5. Each has distinct anatomical characteristics and some of these are extremely rare and incompatible with life (e.g. Chiari 3.5). Chiari IV malformation has been further clarified. Some physicians might be unfamiliar with the newer classifications of Chiari malformations because these conditions are rare or even unique. Here Be Dragons: Using Dragons as Models for Phylogenetic Analysis

Dragons are a staple of fantasy literature, and various aspects of the creatures (most notably their anatomy) have been explored scientifically across different forms of media. Their distinct anatomical characteristics and the variations therein among the recognized “species” of dragons make the taxa appropriate models for basic phylogenetic analysis in an undergraduate general biology or systematics class. The wyvern, an obviously more primitive, distant cousin of the “true” dragons, is also an appropriate outgroup for these estimations of shared evolutionary history. Separating metallic from chromatic dragons, the generated tree shows relationships among the species that are consistent with their separation in the Dungeons &amp; Dragons games according to alignment, scale color, and religion, three characters that are not used in the analysis. Manual construction of a character matrix and cladogram of dragons followed by repetition of this process via conventional computer software allows the students to track their progress not only in terms of understanding such concepts as choice of character states and parsimony but also in terms of the applicability of said software.
