Simulated nitrogen deposition and precipitation events alter microbial carbon cycling during early stages of litter decomposition

Abstract Plant litter decomposition is a major nutrient input to terrestrial ecosystems that is primarily driven by microorganisms. Litter quality is considered a key drive of decomposition; however, human-induced global disturbance like nitrogen deposition and increasing extreme precipitation events will shift nutrient availability during litter decomposition. Little is known about how shifting nutrient availability will impact dissolved organic matter concentrations and microbially driven carbon cycling that are critical to soil organic matter formation. This study investigated the effect of simulated nitrogen deposition and repeated precipitation events on microbially-driven carbon flow during short-term litter decomposition using a ‘common garden’ experiment with microcosms containing sand and blue grama grass litter inoculated with different microbial communities. Overall, nitrogen deposition decoupled respiration and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by increasing respiration and not affecting DOC concentrations. Moreover, nitrogen deposition had no effect on microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE). Repeated simulated precipitation events significantly increased DOC concentrations, decreased microbial CUE, increased the microbial metabolic quotient (qCO2), and altered microbial composition and diversity. These findings highlight the complex interactions and responses of surface litter decomposers to shifting nutrient availability and contradicts previous findings that nitrogen deposition will increase soil carbon sequestration from a larger supply of DOC and reduced respiration.

High capacities of carbon capture and photosynthesis of a novel organic carbon-fixing microalgae in municipal wastewater: From mutagenesis, screening, ability evaluation to mechanism analysis

The development of wastewater treatment processes capable of reducing and fixing carbon is currently a hot topic in the wastewater treatment field. Microalgae possess a natural carbon-fixing advantage, and microalgae that can symbiotically coexist with indigenous bacteria in actual wastewater attract more significant attention. Ultraviolet (UV) mutagenesis and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) acclimation were applied to strengthen the carbon-fixing performance of microalgae in this study. The mechanisms associated with microalgal water purification ability, gene regulation at the molecular level and photosynthetic potential under different trophic modes resulting from carbon fixation and transformation were disclosed. The superior performance of Chlorella sp. MHQ2 was eventually screened out among a large number of mutants generated from 3 wild-type Chlorella strains. Results indicated that the dry cell weight of the optimal species Chlorella sp. HQ mutant MHQ2 was 1.91 times that of the wild strain in the pure algal system, more carbon from municipal wastewater (MW) were transferred to the microalgae and re-entered into the biological cycle through resource utilization. In addition, COD, NH3-N and TP removal efficiencies of MW by Chlorella sp. MHQ2 were found to increase to 95.8% (1.1-times), 96.4% (1.4-times), and 92.9% (1.2-times), respectively, under the extra DOC supply and the assistance of indigenous bacteria in the MW. In the transcriptome analysis of the logarithmic phase, the glycolytic pathway was inhibited, and the pentose phosphate pathway was mainly carried out for microalgal life activities, further promoting efficient energy utilization. Upon analysis of carbon capture capacity and photosynthetic potential in trophic mode, the addition of NaHCO3 increased the photosynthetic rate of Chlorella sp. MHQ2 in mixotrophy whereas it was attenuated in autotrophy. This study could provide a new perspective for the study of resource utilization and microalgae carbon- fixing mechanisms in the actual wastewater treatment process.

New Estimate of the Supply of Dissolved Organic Carbon with the Waters of the Ob and Yenisei to the Kara Sea Basin

Calculations were made of the runoff of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into the Kara Sea with the waters of the Ob and Yenisei rivers. The estimates performed showed that the DOC runoff with the Yenisei waters (3.67 × 106 tC/year) is less than the DOC runoff with the Ob waters (4.06 × 106 tC/year), which is due to differences in the structure of the drainage basins and estuaries of these rivers. All previous published estimates show the opposite. The lack of the DOC content data during the maximum flood of the Yenisei does not let us calculate accurately the DOC runoff with its waters, but makes it possible to estimate its maximum and minimum values (3.11–4.18 × 106 tC/year).

Coupling of Water‐Carbon Interactions During Snowmelt in an Arctic Finland Catchment

AbstractSnowmelt spring floods regulate carbon transport from land to streams. However, these coupled processes are rarely documented through high‐resolution measurements focused on water‐carbon interactions. We collated a state‐of‐the‐art high‐frequency data set throughout a snowmelt and early post snowmelt period, alongside regular samples of stream water, precipitation, and snowmelt isotopes (δ18O). Our study was conducted during the 2019 snowmelt and initial post snowmelt season in a subarctic, peatland influenced headwater catchment in Pallas, Northern Finland. We measured high‐frequency dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and in‐stream carbon dioxide (pCO2). We identified a change in hydrological processes as the snowmelt season progressed and the post snowmelt season began. We found (a) Overland flow dominated stream DOC dynamics in early snowmelt, while increased catchment connectivity opened new distal pathways in the later snowmelt period; (b) CO2 processes were initially driven by rapid bursts of CO2 from the meltwaters in snowmelt, followed by dilution and source limitation emerging post snowmelt as deep soil pathways replaced the snowpack as the main source of CO2; (c) stream carbon concentration shifted from being relatively balanced between CO2 and DOC during the early snowmelt period to being increasingly DOC dominated as snowmelt progressed due to changes in DOC and CO2 source supply. The study highlights the importance of using high‐frequency measurements combined with high‐frequency data analyses to identify changes in the processes driving water‐carbon interactions. The degree to which water‐carbon interactions respond to the continuation of Arctic water cycle amplification is central to delineating the evolving complexity of the future Arctic.

Landscape determinants of pelagic and benthic primary production in northern lakes.

Global change affects gross primary production (GPP) in benthic and pelagic habitats of northern lakes by influencing catchment characteristics and lake water biogeochemistry. However, how changes in key environmental drivers manifest and impact total (i.e., benthic + pelagic) GPP and the partitioning of total GPP between habitats represented by the benthic share (autotrophic structuring) is unclear. Using a dataset from 26 shallow lakes located across Arctic, subarctic, and boreal northern Sweden, we investigate how catchment properties (air temperature, land cover, hydrology) affect lake physico-chemistry and patterns of total GPP and autotrophic structuring. We find that total GPP was mostly light limited, due to high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations originating from catchment soils with coniferous vegetation and wetlands, which is further promoted by high catchment runoff. In contrast, autotrophic structuring related mostly to the relative size of the benthic habitat, and was potentially modified by CO2 fertilization in the subarctic, resulting in significantly higher total GPP relative to the other biomes. Across Arctic and subarctic sites, DIC and CO2 were unrelated to DOC, indicating that external inputs of inorganic carbon can influence lake productivity patterns independent of terrestrial DOC supply. By comparison, DOC and CO2 were correlated across boreal lakes, suggesting that DOC mineralization acts as an important CO2 source for these sites. Our results underline that GPP as a resource is regulated by landscape properties, and is sensitive to large-scale global changes (warming, hydrological intensification, recovery of acidification) that promote changes in catchment characteristics and aquatic physico-chemistry. Our findings aid in predicting global change impacts on autotrophic structuring, and thus community structure and resource use of aquatic consumers in general. Given the similarities of global changes across the Northern hemisphere, our findings are likely relevant for northern lakes globally.

Spatial Distributions of Riverine and Marine Dissolved Organic Carbon in the Western Arctic Ocean: Results From the 2018 Korean Expedition

AbstractSeasonal primary production and river discharge increases in the Arctic Ocean exert a significant influence on the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) cycle. To improve our knowledge of the spatial heterogeneity of DOC source and concentration in the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean, we investigated the distributions of riverine and marine DOC in the western Arctic Ocean during the summer of 2018. Although the surface bulk DOC concentration indicated no clear distinction in its distribution between the Chukchi Borderland (CBL)/northern Chukchi Sea (NCS) and East Siberian Sea (ESS)/Mendeleyev Ridge (MR) regions, the estimated riverine DOC concentration (28 ± 4.2 μM C) and its contribution (40 ± 5.7%) in the surface layer of the CBL/NCS region were higher than those (19 ± 5.6 μM C and 26 ± 8.5%) in the ESS/MR region, which was attributed to the accumulation of freshwater, strong stratification, and a longer residence time in the CBL/NCS region. In contrast, although marine DOC was the dominant DOC component in both the CBL/NCS and ESS/MR regions, the higher marine DOC concentration (54 ± 8.1 μM C) and its contribution (73 ± 8.2%) in the East Siberian shelf/slope region were consistent with high bacterial abundance, which was associated with extremely high surface phytoplankton blooms sustained by nutrient supply from the deep layer, suggesting that the supply of bioavailable DOC resulted in active bacterial activities. Overall, the spatial differences in water properties between the two regions had large influences on the regional distributions of riverine and marine DOC.

North Atlantic Western Boundary Currents Are Intense Dissolved Organic Carbon Streams

In the North Atlantic, there are two main western boundary currents related to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC): the Gulf Stream flowing northward and the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) flowing southward. Here we analyze data from the OVIDE section (GO-SHIP A25 Portugal-Greenland 40–60°N) that crosses the DWBC and the northward extension of the Gulf Stream, the North Atlantic Current. We show that North Atlantic western boundary currents play a key role in the transport of dissolved organic matter, specifically dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Revisited transports and budgets of DOC with new available data identify the eastern Subpolar North Atlantic (eSPNA) as an important source of locally produced organic matter for the North Atlantic and a key region in the supply of bioavailable DOC to the deep ocean. The East Greenland Current, and its upstream source the East Reykjanes Ridge Current on the eastern flank of the mid-Atlantic ridge, are export pathways of bioavailable DOC toward subtropical latitudes. The fast overturning and subsequent remineralization of DOC produced in the autotrophic eSPNA explains up to 38% of the total oxygen consumption in the deep North Atlantic between the OVIDE section and 24°N. Carbon budgets that do not take into account this organic remineralization process overestimates the natural uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere by one third. The inclusion of DOC transports in regional carbon budgets reconciles the estimates of CO2 uptake in the North Atlantic between model and observations.

Versatile cyanobacteria control the timing and extent of sulfide production in a Proterozoic analog microbial mat

Cyanobacterial mats were hotspots of biogeochemical cycling during the Precambrian. However, mechanisms that controlled O2 release by these ecosystems are poorly understood. In an analog to Proterozoic coastal ecosystems, the Frasassi sulfidic springs mats, we studied the regulation of oxygenic and sulfide-driven anoxygenic photosynthesis (OP and AP) in versatile cyanobacteria, and interactions with sulfur reducing bacteria (SRB). Using microsensors and stable isotope probing we found that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released by OP fuels sulfide production, likely by a specialized SRB population. Increased sulfide fluxes were only stimulated after the cyanobacteria switched from AP to OP. O2 production triggered migration of large sulfur-oxidizing bacteria from the surface to underneath the cyanobacterial layer. The resultant sulfide shield tempered AP and allowed OP to occur for a longer duration over a diel cycle. The lack of cyanobacterial DOC supply to SRB during AP therefore maximized O2 export. This mechanism is unique to benthic ecosystems because transitions between metabolisms occur on the same time scale as solute transport to functionally distinct layers, with the rearrangement of the system by migration of microorganisms exaggerating the effect. Overall, cyanobacterial versatility disrupts the synergistic relationship between sulfide production and AP, and thus enhances diel O2 production.

Seasonal manganese transport in the hyporheic zone of a snowmelt-dominated river (East River, Colorado, USA)

Manganese (Mn) plays a critical role in river-water quality because Mn-oxides serve as sorption sites for contaminant metals. The aim of this study is to understand the seasonal cycling of Mn in an alpine streambed that experiences large spring snowmelt events and the potential responses to changes in snowmelt timing and magnitude. To address this goal, annual variations in river-water/groundwater interaction and Mn(aq) transport were measured and modeled in the bed of East River, Colorado, USA. In observations and numerical models, oxygenated river water containing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) mixes with groundwater rich in Mn(aq) in the streambed. The mixing depth increases during spring snowmelt when river discharge increases, leading to a greater DOC supply to the hyporheic zone and net respiration of Mn-oxides, despite an enhanced supply of oxygen. As groundwater upwelling resumes during the subsequent baseflow period, Mn(aq)-rich groundwater mixes with oxygenated river water, resulting in net accumulation of Mn-oxides until the bed freezes in winter. To explore potential responses of Mn transport to different climate-induced hydrological regimes, three hydrograph scenarios were numerically modeled (historic, low-snow, and storm) for the Rocky Mountain region. In a warming climate, Mn(aq) export to the river decreases, and Mn(aq) oxidation is favored in the upper streambed sediments over more of the year. One important implication is that the streambed may have an increased sorption capacity for metals over more of the year, leading to potential changes in river-water quality.

Modelling the interaction of climate, forest ecosystem, and hydrology to estimate catchment dissolved organic carbon export

AbstractThe potential for increased loads of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in streams and rivers is a concern for regulating the water quality in water supply watersheds. With increasing hydroclimatic variability related to global warming and shifts in forest ecosystem community and structure, understanding and predicting the magnitude and variability of watershed supply and transport of DOC over multiple time scales have become important research and management goals. In this study, we use a distributed process‐based ecohydrological model (Regional Hydro‐Ecological Simulation System [RHESSys]) to explore controls and predict streamflow DOC loads in Biscuit Brook. Biscuit Brook is a forested headwater catchment of the Neversink Reservoir, part of the New York City water supply system in the Catskill Mountains. Three different model structures of RHESSys were proposed to explore and evaluate hypotheses addressing how vegetation phenology and hydrologic connectivity between deep groundwater and riparian zones influence streamflow and DOC loads. Model results showed that incorporating dynamic phenology improved model agreement with measured streamflow in spring, summer, and fall and fall DOC concentration, compared with a static phenology. Additionally, the connectivity of deep groundwater flux through riparian zones with dynamic phenology improved streamflow and DOC flux in low flow conditions. Therefore, this study suggests the importance of inter‐annual vegetation phenology and the connectivity of deep groundwater drainage through riparian zones in the hydrology and stream DOC loading in this forested watershed and the ability of process‐based ecohydrological models to simulate these dynamics. The advantage of a process‐based modelling approach is specifically seen in the sensitivity to forest ecosystem dynamics and the interactions of hydroclimate variability with ecosystem processes controlling the supply and distribution of DOC. These models will be useful to evaluate different forest management approaches toward mitigating water quality concerns.

Unusual Roles of Discharge, Slope and SOC in DOC Transport in Small Mountainous Rivers, Taiwan

Riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC), responsible for riverine productivity, is rarely documented in subtropical small mountainous rivers (SMRs) where high rainfall and steep slopes are the main features. This study investigated the DOC export at eight sites in three Taiwan SMRs to characterize the dynamics and controlling factors of DOC transport. Results showed that the mean DOC concentration of ~0.78 mg L−1 is much lower than the global average of ~5.29 mg L−1. However, the mean DOC yield, ~22.51 kg-C ha−1 yr−1, is higher than the global average of 14.4–19.3 kg-C ha−1 yr−1. Comparing with worldwide rivers from literature, the annual discharge, slope, and SOC (soil organic carbon) are controlling factors as expected, though they influence in different ways. SOC stock likely regulated by elevation-dependent biomes dominate the DOC supply, while slope restrains the DOC generation due to shallow soil depth and fast runoff velocity. However, the abundant discharge flushing this persistent low supply leads to a large DOC export in the SMRs. Furthermore, the DOC dynamics during typhoon periods showed a clockwise hysteresis, suggesting that the DOC is mainly from the riparian zone or downslope area during the rising limb of the hydrograph. This study elucidates the DOC transport in SMRs and provides an atypical yet significant piece of understanding on DOC transport in a global context.

Hydrological pulses and burning of dissolved organic carbon by stream respiration

AbstractStream metabolism plays a significant role in the global carbon cycle. Storm events can lower stream metabolic activities by removing standing biomass and river bed stock of organic matter. However, hydrological events could also stimulate stream ecosystem respiration (ER) by providing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) derived from soils. Here, I show how hydrological connectivity between land and water affects fluxes of DOC and daily whole stream bacterial respiration over an annual cycle in streams rich in DOC in north‐west Europe. The novelty of the approach resides in combining continuous whole stream metabolism with hydrological flow paths and water chemistry to quantify the in situ fate of DOC at ecosystem scale, with an estimation of all major stream carbon fluxes (land‐derived CO2, in‐stream biotic CO2, HCO3, and DOC) at catchment scale. An average 23% ± 11% of the annual DOC inputs from the land was respired away by benthic microbial metabolism within about an hour of transit time in small watersheds (about 1 km2). Stream ER was highly related to discharge and was stimulated for as long as the hydrological connectivity between land and water remained, as indicated by soil moisture continuous monitoring. In‐stream heterotrophic respiration represented 16% ± 7% of the annual total carbon fluxes (also including HCO3, land‐derived CO2, and DOC) at the catchment outlet under stable flows. This study suggests that DOC supply (soil carbon loss) will increase with rainfall, stimulating aquatic respiration, and CO2 emissions in streams.

Assessment of methane and carbon dioxide emissions in two sub‐basins of a small acidic bog lake artificially divided 30 years ago

Abstract Although lakes are important sources of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere contributing to global warming, their CH4 and CO2 emissions are rarely assessed. In particular, increasing inputs of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) may affect gas dynamics and alter seasonal changes in gas production. Here, we analysed variations in CH4 and CO2 dynamics in sub‐basins of an acidic bog lake, which was artificially divided into four quarters three decades ago, leading to divergence in water chemistry and biology. In the divided lake, only the south‐west basin (SW) received DOC inputs from an adjacent peat bog, while the north‐east basin (NE) was hydrologically disconnected. A year‐long determination of CH4 and CO2 production and emission patterns in the two contrasting basins exposed the indirect mechanisms by which DOC supply exercised control on greenhouse gas dynamics in this shallow lake. In both basins, dissolved CH4 was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (O2) through the water column, suggesting that aerobic methanotrophy is an important regulator of CH4 emissions in this lake. In contrast, the amount of CO2 stored in oxic and anoxic layers was not significantly different between the basins, suggesting that O2 is not the most important driver of dissolved CO2. Estimated total CH4 and CO2 emissions were 2.1 and 1.7 times lower in the NE basin than in the SW basin, with major CH4 and CO2 emissions occurring during the fall turnover. The differences in CH4 and CO2 emissions suggest that the hydro‐physical properties, namely seasonal temperature, the duration of stratification and O2 availability, are the main drivers of CH4 and CO2 emissions to the atmosphere from small shallow lakes under the influence of DOC inputs under global warming pressure.

Forest harvest legacies control dissolved organic carbon export in small watersheds, western Oregon

This study examined physical and biological controls on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes from conifer-forest watersheds in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest of Oregon. We tested how DOC export was related to streamflow and legacies of wood on the forest floor three to five decades after harvest of old-growth forest in seven watersheds spanning the rain to snow elevation gradient. Three watersheds had old-growth forest and four had 30 to 50-year-old forest established after clearcutting of old-growth forest. Mean annual DOC flux in the watersheds was related to the biomass of forest floor wood, which was two or three times higher in watersheds with old-growth forest compared to young forest, and was inversely related to elevation, a measure of snowpack depth and duration. In contrast, fluxes of inorganic elements such as Si and Ca did not vary with harvest history or forest floor characteristics. Annual fluxes of DOC, Si, and Ca were linearly related to annual runoff, and annual volume-weighted concentrations of these ions declined by < 0.6% with several-fold increases in annual runoff. Across all years, DOC concentrations peaked before the peak of the hydrograph in all watersheds, which we interpret as representing movement, likely via preferential and surficial flow, of organic materials mineralized and solubilized during the long dry summers in this ecosystem. DOC concentrations relative to stream flow exhibited clockwise hysteresis loops in each water year, also suggesting that soluble DOC produced in the dry summer is exported in the fall. DOC concentration differences between reference and harvested watersheds also peaked in late summer or early fall, suggesting that the source of the additional DOC from reference watersheds came from coarse woody debris that remains moist during the dry summers and that was significantly greater in watersheds with elevated DOC. Taken together, our results suggest that forest floor wood is a previously unappreciated control on the supply of DOC that can be exported, and runoff is a secondary control on total DOC flux to streams. The legacy of forest harvest on DOC flux can be observed for decades, as total ecosystem carbon stocks, especially coarse woody debris, may require centuries to develop after old-growth forest harvest.

A Framework for Understanding Variation in Pelagic Gross Primary Production of Lake Ecosystems

Light and nutrient availability are key physiological constraints for primary production. Widespread environmental changes are causing variability in loads of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nutrients from watersheds to lakes, contributing to simultaneous changes in both light and nutrient supply. Experimental evidence highlights the potential for these watershed loads to create complex and context-dependent responses of within-lake primary production; however, the field lacks a predictive model to investigate these responses. We embedded a well-established physiological model of phytoplankton growth within an ecosystem model of nutrient and DOC supply to assess how simultaneous changes in DOC and nutrient loads could impact pelagic primary production in lakes. The model generated a unimodal relationship between GPP and DOC concentration when loads of DOC and nutrients were tightly correlated across space or time. In this unimodal relationship, the magnitude of the peak GPP was primarily determined by the DOC-to-nutrient ratio of the load, and the location of the peak along the DOC axis was primarily determined by lake area. Greater nutrient supply relative to DOC load contributed to greater productivity, and larger lake area increased light limitation for primary producers at a given DOC concentration, owing to the positive relationship between lake area and epilimnion depth. When loads of DOC and nutrients were not tightly correlated in space or time, the model generated a wedge-shaped pattern between GPP and DOC, consistent with spatial surveys from a global set of lakes. Our model is thus capable of unifying the diversity of empirically observed spatial and temporal responses of lake productivity to DOC and mineral nutrient supply presented in the literature, and provides qualitative predictions for how lake pelagic primary productivity may respond to widespread environmental changes.

An initial carbon export assessment in the Mediterranean Sea based on drifting sediment traps and the Underwater Vision Profiler data sets

During the SESAME EU FP6 project, all available particulate organic carbon (POC) data collected from drifting sediment trap and Underwater Vision Profiler deployments (INSU PROOF database, 1991–2011) were gathered in order to assess carbon export at the scale of the Mediterranean Sea. In this study, we observed that particle size, POC export, and the contribution of microphytoplankton to the phytoplankton community structure, all decreased following the west to east net primary production gradient. One the other hand, no clear longitudinal gradient was found regarding particle composition (C/N ratio or lipid content). The above longitudinal patterns were also observed at the seasonal scale from spring to summer in the northwestern sub-basin. These observations suggest that particle size rather than organic matter composition controls fluxes of POC in the Mediterranean Sea. The comparison between POC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes highlights the different time-scale of physicals vertical mechanisms and suggests that DOC flux can play an underestimated role in the supply of fresh carbon to the deep waters Mediterranean Sea. Indeed, DOC supply to deeper layers can be one order of magnitude larger than particle carbon flux but occurs in pulses when stratification breaks due to (i) deep-water formation, or (ii) winter mixing. In contrast, the vertical export of POC occurs throughout the year bringing weak, but almost continuous, energy to meso- and bathypelagic organisms.

Can tributary in-flows improve the recovery of the dissolved organic carbon regime in a snowmelt river regulated by a large reservoir?

Although tributary inputs can accelerate the recovery of many physical and chemical gradients below large reservoirs, their contribution to the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) regime in regulated rivers remains poorly studied. In some regulated tributaries, flow volumes can be manipulated, potentially influencing DOC supply to the main stem. The present study examines how tributary water diversion affects DOC supply to a snowmelt river regulated by large reservoirs. DOC concentration was measured at tributary and main stem sites, and tributary DOC export was estimated under different tributary flow-diversion scenarios. Significant, positive correlations between DOC concentration and discharge were absent directly below the dam, but were present in the unregulated tributary, and re-emerged below the tributary confluence. Irrespective of water-diversion practices, tributary in-flows reconnected the regulated main stem to a more variable DOC regime driven by catchment flushing processes. However, tributary water diversion dampened the tributary signal by reducing DOC pulse frequency and total DOC export to the regulated river. These aspects of the DOC regime may influence basal resource availability and ecosystem functioning in the regulated main stem. The present study illustrates how an ecologically valuable tributary function can be addressed and quantified to guide the management and rehabilitation of a regulated river system.

Dry‐season length and runoff control annual variability in stream DOC dynamics in a small, shallow groundwater‐dominated agricultural watershed

AbstractAs a phenomenon integrating climate conditions and hydrological control of the connection between streams and terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sources, groundwater dynamics control patterns of stream DOC characteristics (concentrations and fluxes). Influence of intra‐annual variations in groundwater level, discharge and climatic factors on DOC concentrations and fluxes were assessed over 13 years at the headwater watershed of Kervidy‐Naizin (5 km2) in western France. Four seasonal periods were delineated within each year according to groundwater fluctuations (A: rewetting, B: high flow, C: recession, and D: drought). Annual and seasonal base flow versus stormflow DOC concentrations were defined based on daily hydrograph readings. High interannual variability of annual DOC fluxes (5.4–39.5 kg ha−1 yr−1) indicates that several years of data are required to encompass variations in water flux to evaluate the actual DOC export capacity of a watershed. Interannual variability of mean annual DOC concentrations was much lower (4.9–7.5 mg C L−1), with concentrations decreasing within each year from ca. 9.2 mg C L−1 in A to ca. 3.0 mg C L−1 in C. This indicates an intra‐annual pattern of stream DOC concentrations controlled by DOC source characteristics and groundwater dynamics very similar across years. Partial least squares regressions combined with multiple linear regressions showed that the dry season characteristics (length and drawdown) determine the mean annual DOC concentration while annual runoff determines the annual flux. Antagonistic mechanisms of production‐accumulation and dilution‐depletion combined with an unlimited DOC supply from riparian wetland soils can mitigate the response of stream concentrations to global changes and climatic variations.
