Global subterranean estuaries modify groundwater nutrient loading to the ocean

AbstractTerrestrial groundwater travels through subterranean estuaries before reaching the sea. Groundwater‐derived nutrients drive coastal water quality, primary production, and eutrophication. We determined how dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) are transformed within subterranean estuaries and estimated submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) nutrient loads compiling > 10,000 groundwater samples from 216 sites worldwide. Nutrients exhibited complex, nonconservative behavior in subterranean estuaries. Fresh groundwater DIN and DIP are usually produced, and DON is consumed during transport. Median total SGD (saline and fresh) fluxes globally were 5.4, 2.6, and 0.18 Tmol yr−1 for DIN, DON, and DIP, respectively. Despite large natural variability, total SGD fluxes likely exceed global riverine nutrient export. Fresh SGD is a small source of new nutrients, but saline SGD is an important source of mostly recycled nutrients. Nutrients exported via SGD via subterranean estuaries are critical to coastal biogeochemistry and a significant nutrient source to the oceans.

Growth, nutrient removal, and lipid productivity promotion of Chlorella sorokiniana by phosphate solubilizing bacteria Bacillus megatherium in swine wastewater: Performances and mechanisms

Effects of a phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) Bacillus megatherium on growth and lipid production of Chlorella sorokiniana were investigated in synthesized swine wastewater with dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), insoluble inorganic phosphorus (IIP), and organic phosphorus (OP). The results showed that the PSB significantly promoted the algal growth in OP and IIP, by 1.10 and 1.78-fold, respectively. The algal lipid accumulation was also greatly triggered, respectively by 4.39, 1.68, and 1.38-fold in DIP, IIP, and OP. Moreover, compared with DIP, OP improved the oxidation stability of algal lipid by increasing the proportion of saturated fatty acids (43.8 % vs 27.9 %), while the PSB tended to adjust it to moderate ranges (30.2–41.6 %). Further, the transcriptome analysis verified the OP and/or PSB-induced up-regulated genes involving photosynthesis, lipid metabolism, signal transduction, etc. This study provided novel insights to enhance microalgae-based nutrient removal combined with biofuel production in practical wastewater, especially with complex forms of phosphorus.

Evaluation of the Effects of Environmental Factors on Seasonal Variations in Fish Diversity on a Coastal Island in Western Japan

Coastal habitats are crucial for supporting ecological processes and serve as vital ecosystems for diverse fish species, providing essential functions such as feeding, nursery provision, and reproductive habitats. Fish communities are ecologically important components of coastal ecosystems and are affected by multiple environmental factors. Despite their importance, determining the effects of environmental factors on seasonal variations in fish species diversity and community dynamics remains a challenge. The advent of environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, an environmentally conscious approach, has resulted in considerable advancements in recent years and has been progressively adopted for marine fish population monitoring. Here, we used environmental DNA metabarcoding to study seasonal variations in fish community structure on a coastal island, and we assessed the effects of environmental factors in structuring these communities. Our findings revealed a rich diversity of 72 fish species across 40 families and 23 orders in the seawater surrounding an island of the Seto Inland Sea (SIS), Western Japan. Notably, the composition of fish communities varied significantly between seasons, with seawater temperature, salinity, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration identified as important factors correlated with fish communities’ structures. In conclusion, our study provides useful information of fish diversity, and we suggest that eDNA is a valuable technique for monitoring fish diversity in coastal areas. These findings are crucial for ecological studies and the environmental monitoring of oceanic coastal environments.

Phosphorus cycling in a subterranean estuary seepage face: A seasonal view on inventory composition and linkage with nitrate transformations

Seasonal field surveys (April 2018 to February 2019) were conducted in a subterranean estuary (STE) seepage face in Sanggou Bay (China) aiming to explore the transport and reactivity of phosphorus (P) and biogeochemical linkages with the cycling of nitrogen (N) prior to discharge. Porewater dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) together with different fractions of sedimentary P were analyzed in the upper, middle and lower intertidal covering the top 20 cm of sediment (1–4 cm, 5–8 cm, 9–12 cm, 13–16 cm and 17–20 cm depth). The accumulation of sedimentary organic P stimulated the growth of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms and led to porewater DOP enrichment during spring. During summer, total P (TP), porewater DIP and DOP concentrations decreased, potentially due to enhanced mineralization driven by high ambient temperature. From autumn to winter, pelagic organic matter into the STE lowered, triggering a drop of TP standing stocks. Compared with the significant seasonality, sedimentary P storage was statistically identical along the intertidal. Such spatial homogeneity likely results from the rebalance driven by P adsorption dynamics and pelagic organic matter delivered by tide and wave setup. The vertical distribution of DIP, DOP, and sedimentary TP were linked to nitrate transformations. In the sediment layer with active mineralization and nitrification, concentrations of DOP, sedimentary redox and clay P increased. In the layer with active nitrate removal (2–5 cm depth), both DIP and DOP concentrations decreased. The sedimentary loosely-bound and organic P were also lower there. Notably, a substantial quantity of soluble P seeped out, acting as an important contributor to the dissolved P pool of the receiving waters. The spatial and temporal overlap of high concentrations of N and P in STEs adds variabilities and uncertainties in P out-drainage fluxes and nutrient stoichiometry balances, which should draw attention from coastal researchers and stakeholders.

Phosphorus forms and zinc concentrations affect the physiological ecology and sinking rate of Thalassiosira weissflogii

The combined effects of phosphorus (P) forms and zinc (Zn) concentrations on diatom silicification remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the effects of different Zn concentrations on the growth, cellular silicon content and sinking rate of Thalassiosira weissflogii under different P forms. The results showed that under the dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) treatments, the specific growth rate of T. weissflogii in Zn limitation culture was significantly lower than that in Zn-replete culture. However, T. weissflogii cellular silicon content and sinking rate increased. Moreover, the reduced specific growth rate (7 %, p < 0.05), enhanced ALP activity (63 %, p < 0.05), and sinking rate (20 %, p < 0.05) for Zn-deplete T. weissflogii implied that the bioavailability of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) was depressed under Zn deplete medium. This study demonstrates that the physiological ecology and sinking rate of the diatom T. weissflogii were affected by both individual and combined changes in P forms and Zn concentrations.

Understanding phosphorus fractions and influential factors on urban road deposited sediments

Phosphorus (P) is a primary pollutant that builds-up on urban road surfaces. Understanding the fraction and load characteristics of P, as well as their relationship with urban factors, is helpful for assessing the ecological risk of urban receiving water bodies. This study presents the characteristics of build-up loads of P fractions in road-deposited sediments (RDS) in Guangzhou, China, analyzes their correlation with three urban factors (road, traffic, and land-use area), and then estimates the exceedance probability of P in stormwater runoff over the past 10 years. The results showed that detrital apatite phosphorus (De-P) performed the highest build-up load on urban road surfaces, followed by apatite phosphorus (Ca-P), iron-bound phosphorus (Fe-P), exchangeable phosphorus (Ex-P), aluminum-bound phosphorus (Al-P), organophosphorus (POP), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), occluded phosphorus (Oc-P), and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP). Depression depth, road materials, and land-use fractions affected the P fractions. The P in the RDS may have originated from three distinct sources: road background, domestic waste, and untreated wastewater discharge. In the most recent 10 years, the event mean concentrations of total P in the RDS have had a 30 % probability of exceeding 0.4 mg L−1, which indicates a serious threat of P to receiving water bodies. The outcomes of this study are expected to provide valuable guidance for elucidating the principal categories of urban non-point source P pollution and enhancing the ecological health of urban water environments.

WITHDRAWN: Effects of hydraulic retention time and cultivation on nutrients removal and biomass production in wastewater by membrane photobioreactor: modeling and optimization by machine learning and response surface methodology

Discharge of excess nutrients in wastewater can potentially cause eutrophication and poor water quality in the aquatic environment. A new approach of nutrients removal in wastewater is by utilizing microalgae which grow by absorbing CO2 from air. Furthermore, the use of membrane photo-bioreactor (MPBR) that combines membranes and photo-bioreactor has emerged as a novel wastewater treatment method. This research sought to model, forecast, and optimize the behavior of dry biomass, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) in MPBR by response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms, which saved time and resources of experimental work. The independent variables that have been used for modeling were hydraulic retention time (HRT) and cultivation. For this purpose, the dry biomass of algal production, DIN and DIP behavior were modeled by RSM and ANN algorithms, to identify the optimum mode of processing. RSM modeling has shown good agreement with experimental data. According to RSM optimization, the optimum mode for DIN and DIP occurred at 1.15 days of HRT and 1.92 days of cultivation. The ANN showed better performance than the RSM model, with the margin of deviation being less than 10%. Furthermore, the ANN algorithm showed higher accuracy than RSM method in predicting the dry biomass, DIN and DIP behavior in MPBR.

Atmospheric deposition and river runoff stimulate the utilization of dissolved organic phosphorus in coastal seas

In coastal seas, the role of atmospheric deposition and river runoff in dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) utilization is not well understood. Here, we address this knowledge gap by combining microcosm experiments with a global approach considering the relationship between the activity of alkaline phosphatases and changes in phytoplankton biomass in relation to the concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). Our results suggest that the addition of aerosols and riverine water stimulate the biological utilization of DOP in coastal seas primarily by depleting DIP due to increasing nitrogen concentrations, which enhances phytoplankton growth. This “Anthropogenic Nitrogen Pump” was therefore identified to make DOP an important source of phosphorus for phytoplankton in coastal seas but only when the ratio of chlorophyll a to DIP [Log10 (Chl a / DIP)] is larger than 1.20. Our study therefore suggests that anthropogenic nitrogen input might contribute to the phosphorus cycle in coastal seas.

Assessment of spawning and nursery habitats of hilsa in the Tetulia and Meghna river estuaries

The Meghna River estuary (MRE) and Tetulia River estuary (TRE) are tropical estuaries on the middle coast of Bangladesh. Hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha), is one of the most important anadromous fish (ascending rivers from the sea for breeding), migrates into the Meghna and Tetulia River estuarine systems from the Bay of Bengal. This study assessed the spawning and nursery habitats of hilsa in the Tetulia and Meghna River estuaries by examining the environmental parameters of both estuarine ecosystems. Water samples were collected from nineteen selected sampling sites along and across the estuaries from January to December 2021 covering both the dry and wet seasons. Salinity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration varied significantly (p &lt; 0.05) between the MRE and TRE during the dry season. In contrast, no significant variation (p &gt; 0.05) was observed in the salinity, DIN and DIP between the MRE and TRE during the wet season. In addition, no significant variation (p &gt; 0.05) was observed in chlorophyll-a concentration between the MRE and TRE during the dry and wet seasons. The salinity tolerance range is an important driver for the spawning (salinity &lt;0.1 psu) and nursery (salinity &lt;0~2 psu) habitat of hilsa. This study explored that the TRE is suitable for spawning and nursery habitat (salinity &lt;0.09 psu) for hilsa all year round because the TRE acts as a freshwater ecosystem (salinity &lt;0.1 psu) annually. Effects and mechanisms of glyphosate as phosphorus nutrient on element stoichiometry and metabolism in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

The ability to utilize dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) gives phytoplankton competitive advantages in P-limited environments. Our previous research indicates that the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum could grow on glyphosate, a DOP with carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond and an herbicide, as sole P source. However, direct evidence and mechanism of glyphosate utilization are still lacking. In this study, using physiological and isotopic analysis, combined with transcriptomic profiling, we demonstrated the uptake of glyphosate by P. tricornutum and revealed the candidate responsible genes. Our data showed a low efficiency of glyphosate utilization by P. tricornutum, suggesting that glyphosate utilization costs energy and that the alga possessed an herbicide-resistant type of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase. Compared to the P-limited cultures, the glyphosate-grown P. tricornutum cells up-regulated genes involved in DNA replication, cell growth, transcription, translation, carbon metabolism, and many genes encoding antioxidants. Additionally, cellular C and silicon (Si) increased remarkably while cellular nitrogen (N) declined in the glyphosate-grown P. tricornutum, leading to higher Si:C and Si:N ratios, which corresponded to the up-regulation of genes involved in the C metabolism and Si uptake and the down-regulation of those encoding N uptake. This has the potential to enhance C and Si export to the deep sea when P is limited but phosphonate is available. In sum, our study documented how P. tricornutum could utilize the herbicide glyphosate as P nutrient and how glyphosate utilization may affect the element content and stoichiometry in this diatom, which have important ecological implications in the future ocean.IMPORTANCEGlyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world and could be utilized as phosphorus (P) source by some bacteria. Our study first revealed that glyphosate could be transported into Phaeodactylum tricornutum cells for utilization and identified putative genes responsible for glyphosate uptake. This uncovers an alternative strategy of phytoplankton to cope with P deficiency considering phosphonate accounts for about 25% of the total dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) in the ocean. Additionally, accumulation of carbon (C) and silicon (Si), as well as elevation of Si:C ratio in P. tricornutum cells when grown on glyphosate indicates glyphosate as the source of P nutrient has the potential to result in more C and Si export into the deep ocean. This, along with the differential ability to utilize glyphosate among different species, glyphosate supply in dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP)-depleted ecosystems may cause changes in phytoplankton community structure. These insights have implications in evaluating the effects of human activities (use of Roundup) and climate change (potentially reducing DIP supply in sunlit layer) on phytoplankton in the future ocean.

Regeneration of sedimentary phosphorus and iron in a large seasonally hypoxic estuary deciphered by 224Ra/228Th disequilibria

Using a 224Ra/228Th disequilibrium approach, we demonstrate in this study that benthic fluxes of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) in the seasonally hypoxic Yangtze River Estuary were largely manipulated by two counteracting processes: the decomposition of sedimentary organic matter and adsorption of DIP onto iron (Fe) oxides. The decomposition rate of sedimentary organic matter rose exponentially with bottom water dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration multiplied by the amplification factor of sediment surface area (ξ), a variable used to describe the intensity of bio-irrigation and physical reworking in the sediment deposit. In the summer of 2020, the Yangtze River catchment encountered the largest flood event in the past 20 years. As a result of enhanced physical reworking of the seabed, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) flux increased by approximately 4-fold as compared to the summer of 2019 (657 vs. 154 mmol m−2 d−1). DIP flux exhibited similar inter-annual variations to DIC flux, indicating that changes in the decomposition rate of sedimentary organic matter were the main cause of the inter-annual differences in DIP flux (1.5 mmol m−2 d−1 in 2020 vs. 0.3 mmol m−2 d−1 in 2019). On the other hand, benthic dissolved Fe fluxes declined exponentially with rising DO concentration because of re-oxidation of Fe2+ in porewater into Fe oxides. As a consequence, approximately 90% of DIP sourced from the decomposition of sedimentary organic matter was retained within the sediment when the bottom water was well oxygenated (DO >125 μmol l−1). Our results imply that regeneration of sedimentary P and Fe may be efficient only within a very narrow redox window where DO concentrations are below a threshold value of ∼60 μmol l−1, but bio-irrigation or physical reworking is still active.

Fresh and saline groundwater nutrient inputs and their impacts on the nutrient budgets in a human-effected bay

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) can be highly enriched in nutrients, especially in bays with strong human activity, but has often been overlooked in coastal nutrient budgets. This study investigated the impact of both fresh and saline SGD on nutrient budgets in Sanmen Bay, China, a region heavily influenced by human activities. Based on the 224Ra mass balance model, the total SGD flux was estimated to be (1.1 ± 0.1) × 108 m3 d−1 (13.9 ± 0.5 cm d−1). Additionally, a water-salt mass balance model revealed that fresh SGD flux accounted for ~9.0 % of the total SGD flux. The results highlight the significance of fresh SGD as a freshwater source, contributing to 35.9 % of the total dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) flux via SGD. Considering all nutrient sources and sinks in the Sanmen Bay, SGD was identified as the primary source of nutrients in Sanmen Bay, contributing 53.9 % and 11.9 % of the total dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and DIP input, respectively. Furthermore, the discharge of industrial/domestic sewage and mariculture wastewater also posed a potential threat to nutrient levels in the bay. Thus, initiatives such as reasonable control of culture species and scale, strengthening wastewater discharge and SGD management are crucial for maintaining the ecological environment of the Sanmen Bay.

How do major ions and fulvic acid affect dissolved inorganic phosphorus adsorption onto suspended particulate matter in estuarine environment?

The adsorption and desorption of Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) onto Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) are of key importance for the biogeochemistry in estuarine system. These processes are susceptible to changes in environmental factors, especially the inherent changes in levels of major ions, fulvic acids and salinity. As anthropogenic organic contamination in estuaries increases, aniline was chosen to investigate the influence of anthropogenic organic matter on DIP adsorption The influence of these factors on adsorption and desorption of phosphate onto SPM in estuarine aquatic system was examined using batch experiments in single and combined systems. The study showed that the adsorption of DIP onto SPM in estuaries was mainly controlled by salinity, especially the concentration of calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sulfate (SO42−) and bicarbonate (HCO3−). Increased concentrations of major cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) enhance DIP adsorption, while increased concentrations of major anions (SO42− and HCO3−) reduce adsorption. The amount of DIP adsorbed to SPM was mainly governed by the concentration of Ca2+, while the effect of differences in salinity was mainly dictated by the concentration of major anions. The facilitating effect of fulvic acid on DIP adsorption was generally negatively affected by increased salinity, as the fulvic acid increasingly reduced the enhancing effect of Ca2+ on DIP adsorption by forming stable complexes. Fulvic acids had no significant influence on the effect of Mg2+ and HCO3− on DIP adsorption to SPM. Aniline slightly inhibited DIP adsorption by competing with DIP for active sites on SPM. Aniline had no significant influence on the effect of cations on DIP adsorption to SPM, while slightly increasing inhibitory influence on anions.

Comparison of nutrients status in Liaodong Bay and Northern Yellow Sea, China: Controlling factors and nutrient budgets

Under the dual stress of global warming and human interaction, Liaodong Bay (LDB) and northern Yellow Sea (NYS) are undergoing significant ecological changes. Little is known about the driving nutrients characteristics supporting fishery resource output in these areas. We carried out three field observations in 2019 to investigate nutrient status. Results showed that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and dissolved silica (DSi) concentrations changed seasonally, with lowest values in spring, and highest values in autumn. High DIN, DIP, and DSi concentrations were detected in LDB and NYS's estuary areas. The Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass plays a role in the distribution and seasonal variation of nutrients. Exchanges across the sediment-water interface, SFGD, atmospheric deposition, and the adjacent sea input dominated DIN dynamics of these areas. DIP primarily came from the adjacent sea input and DSi mainly originated from sediment release and the adjacent sea input. NYS seawater invasion accounted for 13.8% of DIN, 63.4% of DIP, and 35.1% of DSi in LDB. These results provide new insights to better facilitate the formulation of nitrogen and phosphorus reduction and control policies in these marginal seas.

Coastal environmental changes after the Saemangeum seawall construction

The coastal environment in the Saemangeum area has experienced persistent physical stresses owing to the irregular operation of the sluice gates and related artificial disturbances since seawall construction, which has led to restricted freshwater-seawater circulation. To understand the impacts of stress, we performed long-term (1999-2022, 24 years) in situ measurements of relevant biotic and abiotic parameters and employed the random forest (RF) technique to determine the phytoplankton community response to environmental disturbance. Specifically, we estimated chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations using an RF model based on various environmental factors such as sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), dissolved oxygen saturation (DO), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) as input variables. From the RF analysis, each environmental factor contributed to variation in Chl-a concentration as follows: SSS (42.91%), SST (17.88%), DIP (14.38%), DIN (13.36%), and DO (11.48%). In addition, we performed sensitivity experiments by altering the salinity, which was revealed to be the most influential environmental parameter. As a result, Chl-a concentration increased by approximately 1.79 times in lower salinity conditions (from 7 to 27 psu) compared to the normal salinity conditions prior to the seawall construction (from 12 to 32 psu) in both areas, including the inside and outside the seawall. More importantly, lower salinity conditions stimulated dinoflagellate blooms, that is, red tides, implying that restricted freshwater-seawater circulation could worsen coastal ecosystems. Thus, this study contributes to understanding the impacts of environmental changes caused by sluice gate manipulation on marine ecosystems, such as phytoplankton community dynamics. Moreover, this study recommends an ecologically suitable operation scheme for Saemangeum sluice gates to ensure a healthy coastal ecosystem.

The seasonal and spatial distributions of particulate phosphorus (PP) in the water column of the coastal area and open sea of the middle Adriatic Sea area were investigated for the first time. The relationship between PP and two other important forms of phosphorus (dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and organic phosphorus (P-ORG)), and the relationship between PP and other nutrients (nitrogen and silicon salts) and oceanographic parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation, chlorophyll a) from the water column were also examined. PP concentrations ranged from 0.007 μmol dm-3 in the open sea near Palagruža archipelago to 0.589 μmol dm-3 in the Krka River estuary. In the coastal area, PP concentrations were highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The vertical distribution of PP concentrations in the water column of the coastal area were highest in the surface layer during most of the year due to input of PP by freshwater inflows. In the open sea area, there were no significant seasonal or vertical differences in the distribution of PP concentrations in thewater column. Seasonal analysis of the total phosphorus pool (PP, DIP and P-ORG) in the water column indicated that PP and P-ORG concentrations were higher in the coastal area compared to the open sea, while DIP concentrations were comparable.The results further demonstrate that PP can be an important fraction of the total phosphorus pool. A significant positive correlation was found between PP and chlorophyll a, indicating that PP was mainly of biological origin, and with nutrient salts of nitrogen and silicon, while a negative correlation was found with salinity.

Hydrochemical conditions and phytoplankton in the Kievka estuary (Japan Sea) with calculation of primary production by phosphorus utilization

Spatial distribution of chemical parameters, as concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), inorganic silica, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, total iron, dissolved oxygen, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) is considered together with species composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton on the data of complex survey conducted in the estuary of the Kievka River in May 2020, with special attention to DIP and phytoplankton variations along the salinity gradient in the zone of mixing fresh and saline waters. In the lower Kievka, phytoplankton was studied for the first time. The phytoplankon biomass varied from 0.05 to 0.21 g/m3, proportional to changes in primary production calculated from the DIP balance in the river water moving downstream through the estuary (from 0.02 to 0.23 g/m3km). The highest production and the highest biomass were found in the upper part of the external estuary. The water of Kievka River was initially poor in nutrients, so primary production in its estuary was supported by DIP regenerated in the process of organic matter mineralization in the internal estuary.

Vallisneria spiralis Promotes P and Fe Retention via Radial Oxygen Loss in Contaminated Sediments

Microbial respiration determines the accumulation of reduced solutes and negative redox potential in organic sediments, favoring the mobilization of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), generally coprecipitated with Fe oxyhydroxides. Macrophytes releasing oxygen from the roots can contrast DIP mobility via the oxidation of anaerobic metabolism end-products. In this work, the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria spiralis was transplanted into laboratory microcosms containing sieved and homogenized organic sediments collected from a contaminated wetland. Sediments with and without plants were incubated under light and dark conditions for oxygen and DIP fluxes measurements and pore water characterization (pH, oxidation-reduction potential, DIP, dissolved Mn, and Fe). Bare sediments were net DIP sources whereas sediments with V. spiralis were weak DIP sources in the dark and large sinks in light. V. spiralis radial oxygen loss led to less negative redox potential and lower Fe, Mn, and DIP concentrations in pore water. Roots were coated by reddish plaques with large amounts of Fe, Mn, and P, exceeding internal content. The results demonstrated that at laboratory scale, the transplant of V. spiralis into polluted organic sediments, mitigates the mobility of DIP and metals through both direct and indirect effects. This, in turn, may favor sediment colonization by less-tolerant aquatic plants. Further in situ investigations, coupled with economic analyses, can evaluate this potential application as a nature-based solution to contrast eutrophication.

Groundwater nutrient loading into the northern Indian River lagoon: measurements and modeling

The Indian River Lagoon System (IRLS) has been impacted by the surrounding development, leading to excessive nutrient loads that have resulted in frequent and prolonged phytoplankton blooms in the northern reaches. Our study focused on estimating terrestrial groundwater discharge (TGD) and associated nutrient loads by combining field measurements and hydrogeologic modeling at four transects: Eau Gallie (EGT), River Walk (RWT), Banana River (BRT), and Mosquito Lagoon (MLT) across the IRLS. Multiple monitoring stations were installed to collect groundwater and surface water levels, salinity, and nutrient concentrations during 2014-2015. Samples were analyzed for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). Numerical modeling was accomplished using SEAWAT to simulate TGD rates, whereas nutrient loads were calculated by multiplying simulated TGD by measured concentrations. TGD rates and nutrient loads were also estimated specifically for the “near-shore zone” along each transect. The effect of recharge from underlying Hawthorn Formation was also evaluated by incorporating estimated recharge rates into the models. Porewater and lagoon water samples showed that ammonium predominated over (NO2+NO3) and PO4 at all sites, resulting in DIN/DIP ratio surpassing the Redfield ratio. Low nitrite/nitrate, coupled with elevated ammonium concentrations at RWT, BRT, and MLT, may be attributed to biogeochemical transformations catalyzed by mangroves and wetlands. Simulated TGD showed mild temporal but significant spatial variation, especially between EGT and RWT compared to BRT and MLT. The highest average TGD of 0.73 and 0.77 m3/d.m occurred at RWT and EGT, respectively, whereas the lowest rates were predicted at BRT and MLT. The highest estimated average DIN loads of 507 and 428 g/yr.m were received at EGT and RWT, respectively, whereas MLT and BRT exhibited lower loads. The DIP loads were remarkably lower than the DIN loads and were significantly different in space and time between sites. Elevated DIN combined with reduced DIP resulted in DIN/DIP exceeding the Redfield ratio, thereby encouraging the blooming of harmful algae. Although the majority of seepage occurs through the near-shore zone, small amounts are received along the entire transect at all sites. The Hawthorn Formation does not contribute significant recharge to the aquifer at the transect locations.

Coastal eutrophication driven by long-distance transport of large river nutrient loads, the case of Xiangshan Bay, China

With accelerating anthropogenic activities, the overloading of land-derived nutrients and the resultant eutrophication are threatening coastal aquatic habitats worldwide. In semi-enclosed coastal bays, eutrophication is always considered a local problem that can be mitigated by nutrient reduction at a regional scale. However, as the main nutrient drains major global river discharges can have far-reaching effects over hundreds of kilometers alongshore, which are usually not precisely recognized in local coastal zone management. Here, we first quantified the contributions from both local and remote nutrient sources in Xiangshan Bay (XSB), a eutrophic semi-enclosed bay in China 200 km south of the mouth of the Changjiang River (CJR, the world's third largest river), employing a salinity-based conservative mixing model. We found that the nutrients in Xiangshan Bay were mainly supplied by intruded coastal water fed by CJR discharge, contributing 63 % of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), 65 % of dissolved silicon (DSi), and 49 % of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) during the summer of 2017, and 75 % of DIN, 75 % of DSi and 60 % of DIP during the winter of 2019. Additionally, long-term interannual trends in the nutrient concentrations of XSB were generally synchronous with those of the downstream portion of the CJR, indicating that CJR discharge seems to be a strong driver of the eutrophication observed in XSB. In contrast, the impact of local nutrient inputs, such as riverine sewage drainage, aquaculture, biogenic activities, and elemental recycling, was much lower and was regionally limited to the inner bay. Interestingly, the DIP contributions of the local and remote sources were similar, indicating the greater relevance of the internal process. Overall, to mitigate eutrophication in large river-adjacent coastal bays, the inter-regional united practices for nutrient source regulation and ecosystem restoration should be permanently applied along the entire river basin-estuary-coastal continuum.
