Escalating Carbon Export from High-Elevation Rivers in a Warming Climate.

High-elevation mountains have experienced disproportionately rapid warming, yet the effect of warming on the lateral export of terrestrial carbon to rivers remains poorly explored and understood in these regions. Here, we present a long-term data set of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and a more detailed, short-term data set of DIC, δ13CDIC, and organic carbon from two major rivers of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the Jinsha River (JSR) and the Yalong River (YLR). In the higher-elevation JSR with ∼51% continuous permafrost coverage, warming (>3 °C) and increasing precipitation coincided with substantially increased DIC concentrations by 35% and fluxes by 110%. In the lower-elevation YLR with ∼14% continuous permafrost, such increases did not occur despite a comparable extent of warming. Riverine concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon increased with discharge (mobilization) in both rivers. In the JSR, DIC concentrations transitioned from dilution (decreasing concentration with discharge) in earlier, colder years to chemostasis (relatively constant concentration) in later, warmer years. This changing pattern, together with lighter δ13CDIC under high discharge, suggests that permafrost thawing boosts DIC production and export via enhancing soil respiration and weathering. These findings reveal the predominant role of warming in altering carbon lateral export by escalating concentrations and fluxes and modifying export patterns.

Amplified Production and Export of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon During Hot and Wet Subtropical Monsoon

AbstractUnderstanding the origins and processes of riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is crucial for predicting the global carbon cycle with projected, more frequent climate extremes yet our knowledge has remained fragmented. Here we ask: How and how much do DIC production and export vary across space (shallow vs. deep, uphill vs. depression) and time (daily, seasonal, and annual)? How do the relative contributions of biogenic (soil respiration) and geogenic (carbonate weathering) sources differ under different temperature and hydrological conditions? We answer these questions using a catchment‐scale reactive transport model constrained by stream flow, stable water isotopes, stream DIC, and carbon isotope data from a headwater karstic catchment in southwest China in a subtropical monsoon climate. Results show climate seasonality regulates the timing of DIC production and export. In hot‐wet seasons, high temperature accelerates soil respiration and carbonate weathering (up to a factor of three) via elevating soil CO2 and carbonate solubility, whereas high discharge enhances export by two orders of magnitude compared to cold‐dry seasons. Carbonate weathering is driven more by soil CO2 than water flow. At the annual scale, 92.9% and 7.1% of DIC was produced in shallow and deep zone, respectively, whereas 64.5% and 35.5% of DIC was exported from shallow and deep zone, respectively. These results highlight the uniqueness of subtropical karst areas as synchronous reactors and transporters of DIC during the hot‐wet monsoon, contrasting the asynchronous production and export in other climate regions. A future hotter and wetter climate with more intensive storms in the region may further intensify DIC production and export, accentuating the potential of subtropical karst regions as global hot spots for carbon cycling.

Recent inorganic carbon increase in a temperate estuary driven by water quality improvement and enhanced by droughts

Abstract. Estuaries are an important contributor to the global carbon budget, facilitating carbon removal, transfer, and transformation between land and the coastal ocean. Estuaries are susceptible to global climate change and anthropogenic perturbations. We find that a long-term significant mid-estuary increase in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) of 6–21 µmol kg−1 yr−1 (1997–2020) in a temperate estuary in Germany (Elbe Estuary) was driven by an increase in upper-estuary particulate organic carbon (POC) content of 8–14 µmol kg−1 yr−1. The temporal POC increase was due to an overall improvement in water quality observed in the form of high rates of primary production and a significant drop in biological oxygen demand. The magnitude of mid-estuary DIC gain was equivalent to the increased POC production in the upper estuary, suggesting that POC is effectively remineralized and retained as DIC in the mid-estuary, with the estuary acting as an efficient natural filter for POC. In the context of this significant long-term DIC increase, a recent extended drought period (2014–2020) significantly lowered the annual mean river discharge (468 ± 234 m3 s−1) compared to the long-term mean (690 ± 441 m3 s−1, 1960–2020), while the late spring internal DIC load in the estuary doubled. The drought induced a longer dry season, starting in May (earlier than normal), increased the residence time in the estuary and allowed for a more complete remineralization period of POC. Annually, 77 %–94 % of the total DIC export was laterally transported to the coastal waters, reaching 89 ± 4.8 Gmol C yr−1, and thus, between 1997 and 2020, only an estimated maximum of 23 % (10 Gmol C yr−1) was released via carbon dioxide (CO2) evasion. Export of DIC to coastal waters decreased significantly during the drought, on average by 24 % (2014–2020: 38 ± 5.4 Gmol C yr−1), compared to the non-drought period. In contrast, there was no change in the water–air CO2 flux during the drought. We have identified that seasonal changes in DIC processing in an estuary require consideration when estimating both the long-term and future changes in water–air CO2 flux and DIC export to coastal waters. Regional and global carbon budgets should therefore take into account carbon cycling estimates in estuaries, as well as their changes over time in relation to impacts of water quality changes and extreme hydrological events.

A Tidal Flat Adjacent to a Fringe Mangrove Forest Mitigates pCO2 Increases and Enhances Lateral Export of Dissolved Carbon

Carbon export from mangrove forests to the oceans partly acts as a sink for atmospheric CO2, exceeding the rate of carbon burial in mangrove soils. Primary production in ecosystems adjacent to mangroves may prevent degassing and enhance further carbon export from mangroves to the oceans. In this study, we continuously monitored carbonate chemistry parameters (pCO2, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA)) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in a tidal flat adjacent to a fringe mangrove forest over a spring-neap tidal cycle. Mean pCO2 during the entire period was 923 ± 318 μatm, and the export of TA, DIC, and DOC from the mangroves to the ocean was 36 ± 26 mmol m−2 d−1, 42 ± 39 mmol m−2 d−1, and 10 ± 9 mmol m−2 d−1, respectively. Semi-monthly pCO2 variations in the mangrove front were controlled by the tidal level during spring tide and by photosynthesis and respiration on the tidal flat during neap tide. This means that during neap tide, photosynthesis on the tidal flat offset the increase in pCO2 caused by the porewater export from the mangrove soil. The DIC/TA export ratio in this study was 1.17 ± 0.08, which was lower than the global average of 1.41 ± 1.39, indicating that the tidal flat adjacent to the mangrove forest may act as a buffer zone to mitigate the increase in pCO2, resulting in much of the exported DIC being stored in the ocean.

Diffusive and advective cross-frontal fluxes of inorganic nutrients and dissolved inorganic carbon in the Barents Sea in autumn

The Atlantic Water, entering the Arctic through the Barents Sea and Fram Strait, is the main source of nutrients in the Arctic Ocean. The Barents Sea is divided by the Polar Front into an Atlantic-dominated domain in the south, and an Arctic-dominated domain in the north. The Polar Front is a thermohaline structure, which is topographically-steered at sub-surface, and influenced by the seasonal sea ice edge near the surface. Exchanges of nutrients between the inflowing Atlantic Water and the surrounding waters are key for the primary production in the Barents Sea. In October 2020, we measured nutrients (nitrate, phosphate and silicic acid), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ocean stratification, currents and turbulence in the vicinity of the Polar Front in the Barents Sea within the framework of the Nansen Legacy project, allowing estimates of horizontal and vertical advective fluxes and turbulent fluxes of nitrate and DIC. We studied the autumn situation when primary production was declining. We found a substantial transfer of nitrate and DIC across the Polar Front from the Atlantic domain to the Arctic domain. Up to one quarter of the replenishment of the nitrate in the mixed layer during winter could be attributed to vertical mixing during wind events, shared approximately equally between advective and turbulent fluxes. The vertical turbulent fluxes bring nutrients from the subsurface Atlantic Water to the surface. We also identified an export of nitrate and DIC from the Barents Sea to the Nordic Seas occurring along the eastern shelf of Svalbard. Our study shows the role of vertical fluxes in fall and winter to precondition for the following spring bloom.

Air-sea CO2 fluxes and cross-shelf exchange of inorganic carbon in the East China Sea from a coupled physical-biogeochemical model

The East China Sea (ECS) has been reported to be a significant sink of atmospheric CO2, but less is known about horizontal transport of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) across the shelf. A coupled physical-biogeochemical model has been implemented for the ECS to simulate the inorganic carbon system and estimate CO2 fluxes and cross-shelf DIC transport in the ECS. A 6-year model hindcast (2013–2018) was performed and assessed. Multiple existing datasets from in-situ observations are used to constrain and validate the model. The model reproduces the spatial and temporal patterns of nitrogen, chlorophyll and CO2 parameters in general agreement with observations. Modeling estimation reveals that the ECS takes up CO2 at an annual mean rate of about 8.20 ± 3.13 mmol m−2 d−1, and experiences substantial seasonal variability. The total annual CO2 uptake in the ECS is about 21.55 Tg C yr−1. Modeling estimation suggests that the biological processes contribute to about 15 % of the shelf CO2 uptake in the ECS, leaving ~80 % of the shelf uptake contributed by other physical-chemical processes, e.g., physical pump and/or solubility pump. The horizontal fluxes of DIC between the ECS and the adjacent ocean are more than two orders of magnitude larger than the air-sea CO2 flux on the ECS and result in a net DIC export of about ~33.8 ± 14.87 Tg C yr−1 from the shelf area. Modeling results suggest that this conveyance of DIC to the open ocean is equivalent to about 70 % of the inorganic carbon inflow from riverine and atmospheric pathways in the annual scale.

Modeling the Continental Shelf Pump for Dissolved Inorganic Carbon in the Chukchi Sea From 1998 to 2015

AbstractQuantifying the flux of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the Chukchi shelf to the deep ocean (i.e., the continental shelf pump) is of great significance for understanding the carbon cycle and ocean acidification in the changing Arctic Ocean. Using a coupled ocean‐sea ice‐biogeochemical model, this study shows that the Pacific inflow drives the highly efficient continental shelf pump in the Chukchi Sea, with a multi‐year average of 828 Tg C‐DIC exported to deep basins during 1998–2015. The Pacific annual inflow carries 385 Tg C‐DIC to the Chukchi Sea in summertime (May–September) and 436 Tg C in wintertime (October–April). Downstream, DIC is mainly exported via Barrow Canyon (BC) (266 Tg C, 64%) in summer and along the shelf under the 100 m isobath (217 Tg C, 53%) in winter. This variability corresponds to the seasonal variation of local winds. The stronger winter northeasterly winds hinder the outflow through BC. In both seasons, interannual variability exists in the proportion of DIC exports through different pathways. The fraction of DIC export via BC has a significant correlation (r > 0.8) with the along‐canyon wind speed. This is further related to the sea level pressure (SLP) gradient between the Arctic and North Pacific. A weaker SLP gradient leads to weaker local northeasterly wind, and thus favors a higher proportion of DIC export via BC and lower DIC export through other pathways. This process plays a key role in the redistribution of shelf‐sourced DIC in deep basins of the Arctic Ocean.

Using 224Ra/228Th disequilibrium to quantify carbon transformation and export from intertidal sandy and muddy sediments

The intertidal zone is an important pathway for the transport of dissolved carbon across the land–ocean interface. Quantifying carbon transformation and export from the intertidal zone remains large uncertainties due to the natural heterogeneity and various driving mechanisms. Here, we used the 224Ra/228Th disequilibrium method to quantify porewater exchange and dissolved carbon export from intertidal sandy and muddy sediments, two main intertidal wetland types in the coast. Porewater exchange fluxes from sandy sediments ranged from 1.4 ± 0.1 to 1084 ± 53 L m−2 h−1, which gradually increased in the landward direction. Porewater exchange fluxes from mangrove muddy sediments ranged from 0 to 4.4 ± 0.7 L m−2 h−1. Advective porewater exchange was recognized as the dominant solute transport process in sandy sediments, whereas bioturbation may be the key process in mangrove muddy sediments. Furthermore, marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was removed in sandy sediments, indicating that the sandy sediment acted as a sink of DOC, likely via aerobic remineralization. DOC consumption fluxes ranged from 3.7 ± 0.2 to 206 ± 9 mmol C m−2 d−1. The total consumption flux of DOC in the entire sandy beach was one order of magnitude higher than the globally maximum DOC removal flux in the upper ocean. Porewater-derived dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) export fluxes from sandy sediments ranged from 5.6 ± 0.3 to 883 ± 43 mmol C m−2 d−1. Nearly 50% of DIC export originated from the consumption of DOC. The rate constants for DOC transformation ranged from 0.009 to 0.155 h−1. In comparison, porewater-derived DOC and DIC export fluxes from muddy sediments were 25 ± 4 and 206 ± 30 mmol C m−2 d−1, respectively. Porewater-derived DIC export from sandy sediments was comparable or even higher than those from muddy sediments. These results showed that sandy sediments acted as a fast lane for marine DOC remineralization. Overall, both organic-poor sandy and organic-rich mangrove muddy sediments play important roles in the delivery of dissolved carbon to the ocean.

Salt marsh invasion reduces recalcitrant organic carbon pool while increases lateral export of dissolved inorganic carbon in a subtropical mangrove wetland

Mangrove wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems and store large amounts of organic carbon (blue carbon). However, mangrove wetlands have been invaded by S. alterniflora-dominated salt marsh globally, the understanding of how this ecological invasion affects carbon cycling in mangroves remains limited. In this study, we conducted intensive investigations and measurements in a subtropical mangrove wetland (S.E. China) to evaluate the impacts of S. alterniflora invasion on sediment organic carbon (SOC) pools, sources, stability, and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) export. Results showed that S. alterniflora invasion increased sediment labile organic carbon (LOC) content and decreased the proportion of recalcitrant organic carbon (ROC) compared with other habitats (e.g., mudflat, mangrove, and marsh-mangrove transitional community). The δ13C values showed that mangroves can provide more SOC and ROC than S. alterniflora. The SOC provided by S. alterniflora mostly consisted of LOC, which was unstable and easily transformed, leading to the higher anaerobic mineralization rate and CO2 production. Different from the acidic environment of mangrove sediment, the alkaline environment of S. alterniflora sediment preserves more CO2 in the form of DIC in porewater, which could be transported during the movement of tides. Thus, S. alterniflora potentially exported more DIC to the estuary than mangroves. These findings suggested that S. alterniflora-dominated salt marsh invasion can substantially perturb the mangrove wetlands by reducing ROC pool and potentially increasing the lateral export of DIC.

Tracing terrestrial groundwater discharge and porewater exchange derived dissolved carbon export in a tropical estuary using multiple isotopes

Coastal terrestrial groundwater discharge and porewater exchange are two different submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) pathways. The contribution of both pathways in dissolved carbon export to the coastal water remains almost unknown. Here, we investigated terrestrial groundwater discharge, porewater exchange, and dissolved carbon export in a tropical estuary (Moyangjiang, China) using stable water (δ2H and δ18O) and radioactive (222Rn, 224Ra, and 228Th) isotopes. The average terrestrial groundwater discharge was estimated to be (3.2±0.2) × 106 m3 d−1 by a three end-member mixing model of δ18O and salinity. The porewater exchange was estimated to be 11.3±0.14 cm d−1 by the 224Ra/228Th disequilibrium method. Accordingly, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) fluxes from terrestrial groundwater discharge were estimated to be (1.19±0.10) × 107 and (3.23±0.25) × 105 mol d−1, respectively. In comparison, when upscaling to the whole estuary, DIC and DOC export fluxes from porewater exchange were estimated to be (1.56±0.21) × 105 and (2.12±0.29) × 105 mol d−1, respectively. Terrestrial groundwater discharge derived DIC flux was two orders of magnitude greater than that from porewater exchange, and was three times greater than that from river discharge. Terrestrial groundwater discharge was recognized as a significant contributor to DIC export. Porewater exchange played a disproportionately important role in the delivery of DOC to the ocean, and its contribution to DOC needed to be emphasized. Overall, both pathways contributed a large amount of dissolved carbon export to the coastal water, and play an important role in delivering terrestrial carbon across land-ocean interface. Evaluating the contributions of different pathways of SGD to terrestrial solutes will help to improve the accuracy of SGD associated terrestrial solute fluxes.

Lateral Export and Sources of Subsurface Dissolved Carbon and Alkalinity in Mangroves: Revising the Blue Carbon Budget

Mangroves are carbon-rich ecosystems that store large quantities of carbon, mostly in soils. Early carbon (C) budgets indicated that >50% of mangrove C fixation was unaccounted for. This ‘missing C’ has now been discovered to be a large release (423 Tg C a−1) of porewater dissolved DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total alkalinity (17 TMOL a−1) via lateral export derived from bacterial decomposition of soil organic matter. This large export originates from DIC produced over at least a 1.0–1.5 m soil profile (280–420 Tg C a−1) via decomposition of autochthonous and allochthonous inputs and/or likely mineralization in deep (≥1 m) ancient soils. DOC and DIC export from mangroves equate to 41% and ≈100% of export from the world’s tropical rivers, respectively. A newly revised blue carbon budget for the world’s mangroves indicates a mean ecosystem gross primary production (GPPE) to ecosystem respiration (RE) ratio of 1.35 and a net ecosystem production (NEP) of 794 g C m−2 a−1 (= global NEP of 117 Tg C a−1), reflecting net autotrophy. CORG burial is 5% and 9% of GPPE and NEPE, respectively. Mean RE/GPPE is 0.74 and carbon use efficiency averages 0.57, higher than for tropical humid forests (0.35).

Seasonal and Spatial Production Patterns of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon and Total Alkalinity in a Shallow Beach Aquifer

Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (AlkT) fluxes to the nearshore ocean can directly impact the rates of primary production, coral reef formation, coastal ocean acidification, and continental shelf ecology. Current understanding of the transformations that DIC and AlkT undergo as they move from land to sea are limited, leading to difficulties in estimating future DIC and AlkT export that may be altered under a changing climate. While much research has focused on carbon fluxes in carbon-rich mangroves and coastal wetlands, DIC and AlkT transformations and distributions in sandy beach aquifers, which are comparatively carbon-poor, have not been studied as extensively. We monitored DIC and AlkT concentrations in a sandy beach system over six sampling events spanning two years. Substantial changes to DIC and AlkT occurred along subsurface flowpaths due to aerobic respiration and anoxic reactions, resulting in an additional mean flux to the ocean of 191 and 134 mmol/d per meter length of shoreline, respectively. The chemical alterations occurred within the saltwater-freshwater mixing zone beneath the beach surface. Both aerobic and anaerobic reactions actively contributed to DIC and AlkT production within the system, as indicated by DIC: AlkT and dDIC:dAlkT ratios relative to the theoretical dilution line. The work indicates that beach aquifers support active transformation of inorganic carbon and highlights a potentially important and overlooked source of DIC and AlkT to coastal systems.

Porewater chemistry of Louisiana marshes with contrasting salinities and its implications for coastal acidification

Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) are fundamental components of carbonate systems that control pH and buffering capacity of a water body. Three coastal marshes with contrasting salinities in Barataria Basin, Louisiana, USA, were sampled five times between December 2018 and October 2019 to understand seasonal changes in porewater carbonate chemistry and its impact on surrounding water bodies. Porewater DIC and TA increased with depth irrespective of marsh type and ranged from 4.47 to 31.61 mmol/kg and from 1.78 to 28.56 mmol/kg, respectively. The salt marsh had higher porewater DIC and TA compared to the lower salinity intermediate and brackish marshes, probably due to sulfate reduction in the salt marsh. However, it is likely that denitrification is also an important anaerobic respiration pathway in these marshes because of high nitrate concentrations in this region and low porewater TA/DIC ratios in all three marshes. Porewater TA and DIC concentrations were generally higher during warmer months than colder months. However, the marsh flooding regime had a profound influence on TA and DIC concentrations by changing the redox potential of the marsh soil. Porewater TA/DIC ratios in all three marshes were generally less than 1, while surface water TA/DIC ratios were around 1, suggesting that export of DIC and TA from coastal marshes has the potential to contribute to coastal acidification.

Carbon dioxide, methane, and dissolved carbon dynamics in an urbanized river system

AbstractEstimates of greenhouse gas evasion from rivers have been refined over the past decades to constrain their role in global carbon cycle processes. However, despite 55% of the human population living in urban areas, urban rivers have had limited attention. We monitored carbon dynamics in an urbanized river (River Kelvin, 331 km2, UK) to explore the drivers of dissolved carbon lateral and vertical export. Over a 2‐year sampling period, riverine methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations were consistently oversaturated with respect to atmospheric equilibria, leading to continual degassing to the atmosphere. Carbon stable isotopic compositions (δ13C) indicated that terrestrially derived carbon comprised most of the riverine CH4 and dissolved CO2 (CO2*) load while dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from groundwater was the main form of riverine DIC. The dynamics of CH4, CO2*, and DIC in the river were primarily hydrology‐controlled, that is, [CH4] and [CO2*] both increased with elevated discharge, total [DIC] decreased with elevated discharge while the proportion of biologically derived DIC increased with increasing discharge. The concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) showed a weak relationship with river hydrology in summer and autumn and was likely influenced by the combined sewer overflows. Carbon emission to the atmosphere is estimated to be 3.10 ± 0.61 kg C·m−2·yr−1 normalized to water surface area, with more than 99% emitted as CO2. Annual carbon loss to the coastal estuary is approximately 4.69 ± 0.70 Gg C yr−1, with annual DIC export approximately double that of DOC. Per unit area, the River Kelvin was a smaller carbon source to the atmosphere than natural rivers/streams but shows elevated fluxes of DIC and DOC under comparable conditions. This research illustrates the role urban systems may have on riverine carbon dynamics and demonstrates the potential tight link between urbanization and riverine carbon export.

Pore water exchange‐driven inorganic carbon export from intertidal salt marshes

AbstractRespiration in intertidal salt marshes generates dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) that is exported to the coastal ocean by tidal exchange with the marsh platform. Understanding the link between physical drivers of water exchange and chemical flux is a key to constraining coastal wetland contributions to regional carbon budgets. The spatial and temporal (seasonal, annual) variability of marsh pore water exchange and DIC export was assessed from a microtidal salt marsh (Sage Lot Pond, Massachusetts). Spatial variability was constrained from 224Ra : 228Th disequilibria across two hydrologic units within the marsh sediments. Disequilibrium between the more soluble 224Ra and its sediment‐bound parent 228Th reveals significant pore water exchange in the upper 5 cm of the marsh surface (0–36 L m−2 d−1) that is most intense in low marsh elevation zones, driven by tidal overtopping. Surficial sediment DIC transport ranges from 0.0 to 0.7 g C m−2 d−1. The sub‐surface sediment horizon intersected by mean low tide was disproportionately impacted by tidal pumping (20–80 L m−2 d−1) and supplied a seasonal DIC flux of 1.7–5.4 g C m−2 d−1. Export exceeded 10 g C m−2 d−1 for another marsh unit, demonstrating that fluxes can vary substantially across salt marshes under similar conditions within the same estuary. Seasonal and annual variability in marsh pore water exchange, constrained from tidal time‐series of radium isotopes, was driven in part by variability in mean sea level. Rising sea levels will further inundate high marsh elevation zones, which may lead to greater DIC export.

Carbon Balance in Salt Marsh and Mangrove Ecosystems: A Global Synthesis

Mangroves and salt marshes are among the most productive ecosystems in the global coastal ocean. Mangroves store more carbon (739 Mg CORG ha−1) than salt marshes (334 Mg CORG ha−1), but the latter sequester proportionally more (24%) net primary production (NPP) than mangroves (12%). Mangroves exhibit greater rates of gross primary production (GPP), aboveground net primary production (AGNPP) and plant respiration (RC), with higher PGPP/RC ratios, but salt marshes exhibit greater rates of below-ground NPP (BGNPP). Mangroves have greater rates of subsurface DIC production and, unlike salt marshes, exhibit active microbial decomposition to a soil depth of 1 m. Salt marshes release more CH4 from soil and creek waters and export more dissolved CH4, but mangroves release more CO2 from tidal waters and export greater amounts of particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), to adjacent waters. Both ecosystems contribute only a small proportion of GPP, RE (ecosystem respiration) and NEP (net ecosystem production) to the global coastal ocean due to their small global area, but contribute 72% of air–sea CO2 exchange of the world’s wetlands and estuaries and contribute 34% of DIC export and 17% of DOC + POC export to the world’s coastal ocean. Thus, both wetland ecosystems contribute disproportionately to carbon flow of the global coastal ocean.

Carbon Cycling in the World’s Mangrove Ecosystems Revisited: Significance of Non-Steady State Diagenesis and Subsurface Linkages between the Forest Floor and the Coastal Ocean

Carbon cycling within the deep mangrove forest floor is unique compared to other marine ecosystems with organic carbon input, mineralization, burial, and advective and groundwater export pathways being in non-steady-state, often oscillating in synchrony with tides, plant uptake, and release/uptake via roots and other edaphic factors in a highly dynamic and harsh environment. Rates of soil organic carbon (CORG) mineralization and belowground CORG stocks are high, with rapid diagenesis throughout the deep (>1 m) soil horizon. Pocketed with cracks, fissures, extensive roots, burrows, tubes, and drainage channels through which tidal waters percolate and drain, the forest floor sustains non-steady-state diagenesis of the soil CORG, in which decomposition processes at the soil surface are distinct from those in deeper soils. Aerobic respiration occurs within the upper 2 mm of the soil surface and within biogenic structures. On average, carbon respiration across the surface soil-air/water interface (104 mmol C m−2 d−1) equates to only 25% of the total carbon mineralized within the entire soil horizon, as nearly all respired carbon (569 mmol C m−2 d−1) is released in a dissolved form via advective porewater exchange and/or lateral transport and subsurface tidal pumping to adjacent tidal waters. A carbon budget for the world’s mangrove ecosystems indicates that subsurface respiration is the second-largest respiratory flux after canopy respiration. Dissolved carbon release is sufficient to oversaturate water-column pCO2, causing tropical coastal waters to be a source of CO2 to the atmosphere. Mangrove dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) discharge contributes nearly 60% of DIC and 27% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) discharge from the world’s low latitude rivers to the tropical coastal ocean. Mangroves inhabit only 0.3% of the global coastal ocean area but contribute 55% of air-sea exchange, 14% of CORG burial, 28% of DIC export, and 13% of DOC + particulate organic matter (POC) export from the world’s coastal wetlands and estuaries to the atmosphere and global coastal ocean.

Carbon and nutrient export from intertidal sand systems elucidated by 224Ra/228Th disequilibria

We propose an alternative scheme for the use of 224Ra/228Th disequilibria to investigate carbon and nutrient export from a permeable sandy seabed. Sediment profiles of dissolved 224Ra, total 224Ra and 228Th were determined at two different intertidal sand systems - an intertidal sandy beach near Weitou Bay in Fujian (China), and a tidal sand flat in the Wadden Sea near Cuxhaven (Germany). Dramatic deficit of total 224Ra relative to 228Th was identified in the upper 20 or 30 cm sand layer over the sand systems. We construct a simple two-dimensional advective cycling model to simulate interfacial fluid transport in a sand system that is subject to periodic tidal inundation and swash actions. Based on the 224Ra/228Th disequilibria in the sediment, the model gives estimates of 20.3, 9.1, and 1.9 L m−2 h−1 for water exchange flux at the high tide, mid-tide, and low tide position over the sandy beach at Weitou Bay, respectively. In comparison, the model provides an estimate of 7.2 L m−2 h−1 for water exchange flux at the tidal sand flat in the Wadden Sea.The production of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in porewater is the rate-limiting step for DIC export from the sandy beach into the sea, and can be reasonably simulated as a first-order kinetic reaction. The pattern of interfacial fluid transport over the beach facilitates a horizontal zonation of redox condition in the sediment, which evolves progressively from a fully oxic state at the high tide position to a suboxic state at the low tide position. There is clear evidence of nitrogen loss via denitrification in the suboxic status, and we estimate a nitrogen removal rate of 3.3 mmolN m−2 d−1 at this site. For the two intertidal sand systems, DIC export fluxes range from 20.1 to 89.4 mmolC m−2 d−1, comparable in magnitude to fluxes determined in organic rich estuarine sediments. In the meantime, export fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) change from 0.8 to 18.6 mmolN m−2 d−1. Overall, this study suggests that the role of sandy sediments in the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients needs to be revisited.

Carbon System Simulation in the Pearl River Estuary, China: Mass Fluxes and Transformations

AbstractA carbon cycle model is built to describe the behavior of carbon materials in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China. The distributions and transformations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and particulate organic carbon (POC) are simulated in the water column and sediment for the year 2006. The terrestrial carbon input is the dominant factor that determines the seasonal variation of carbon, while physical and biochemical processes contribute to the spatial‐temporal circulation of carbon. The simulation results reveal that the PRE acts as a net source for atmospheric CO2 throughout the year, and it buffers the export of DIC from the river and sediment to the adjacent system via the DIC consumption by primary production. As a consequence of biochemical processes, the PRE exports more organic carbon to the sediment and adjacent marine ecosystems than the amount that it receives from upstream river reaches. POC burial in sediment and refractory DOC export to the adjacent marine ecosystems are the main carbon fixation pathways in the PRE. The total amount of carbon fixation in PRE is estimated 6.92 × 1010 mol C year−1. Carbon fixation analysis shows that (1) 20.4% of the POC deposited into sediment is fixed through burial, while the remaining continues to participate in the circulation of carbon materials, and (2) the combined effects of river discharge and monsoon dominate the amount and direction of refractory DOC exports.

Seasonal Shift From Biogenic to Geogenic Fluvial Carbon Caused by Changing Water Sources in the Wet‐Dry Tropics

AbstractThe riverine export of carbon is expected to be driven by changes in connectivity between source areas and streams. Yet we lack a thorough understanding of the relative contributions of different water sources to the dissolved carbon flux, and of the way these contributions vary with seasonal changes in flow connectivity. Here we assess the temporal variations in water and associated dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) sources and fluxes in a wet‐dry tropical river of northern Australia over two years. We use linear mixing models integrated into a Bayesian framework to determine the relative contributions of rainfall, seasonal wetlands, shallow groundwater, and a deep carbonate aquifer to riverine DIC fluxes, which we relate to the age of water sources. Our results suggest extreme shifts in water and DIC sources between the wet and dry seasons. Under wet conditions, most DIC was of biogenic origin and transported by relatively young water sources originating from shallow groundwater and wetlands. As rainfall ceased, the wetlands either dried out or became disconnected from the stream network. From this stage, DIC switched to a geogenic origin, nearly entirely conveyed via older water sources from the carbonate formation. Our findings demonstrate the importance of changing patterns of connectivity when evaluating riverine DIC export from catchments. This work also illustrates the need to systematically partition DIC fluxes between biogenic and geogenic sources, if we are to quantify how the riverine export of carbon affects net carbon soil storage.
