Disperse Red 1 azo dye: Consequences of low-dose/low-concentration exposures in mice and zebrafish

Color Index Disperse Red 1 (DR1), an azo dye widely used in the textile industry and released into aquatic environments, is genotoxic in somatic cells, but little is known concerning its effects on the reproductive system or the early stages of embryonic development. We have assessed the effects on the spermatozoa of male mice following oral exposure to the dye, at low doses, for 14 days. Measured endpoints were DNA damage (comet assay), miRNA-34c levels, and sperm number, morphology, and motility. Exposure caused decreased miRNA-34c levels. We have also examined dye effects on zebrafish embryos and larvae, which included developmental impairment, altered glutathione transferase activity, and effects on reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation levels.

Tuning the optical and photophysical characteristics of DR1 through mixing with JGB

A dye mixture of Disperse red1 (DR1) and Janus green B (JGB) was prepared with different concentrations of the two dyes. The optical properties were studied for the two dyes and their mixtures in terms of the absorbance spectra. The direct optical energy gap in addition to the refractive index, extinction coefficient, dielectric constant and optical conductivity were estimated to the two dyes and their mixtures. The experimental energy gap was found to be 2.234 and 1.666 eV for DR1 and JGB respectively, while the values of the energy gaps for the mixtures were found to be ranging between these two values. On the other hand, the refractive index was found to be changed in a systematic way by changing the contents of the dye mixture. The same behavior was also observed for the dielectric constant and optical conductivity. The emission of the two dyes and their mixtures was studied in terms of fluorescence spectra using excitation wavelength of 300 nm where a change in the fluorescence intensity was observed by changing the contents of the mixture. Finally, TD-DFT simulations were performed for the two dyes and their mixture to study the electron density, electrostatic potential, energy gap and optical absorption spectrum and found to be compatible with the experimental measurements.

Active Optical Tuning of Azopolymeric Whispering Gallery Mode Microresonators for Filter Applications

Light confinement provided by whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators is especially useful for integrated photonic circuits. In particular, the tunability of such devices has gained increased attention for active filtering and lasering applications. Traditional lithographic approaches for fabricating such devices, especially Si-based ones, often restrict the device’s tuning due to the material’s inherent properties. Two-photon polymerization (2PP) has emerged as an alternative fabrication technique of sub-diffraction resolution 3D structures, in which compounds can be incorporated to further expand their applications, such as enabling active devices. Here, we exploited the advantageous characteristics of polymer-based devices and produced, via 2PP, acrylic-based WGM hollow microcylinders incorporated with the azoaromatic chromophore Disperse Red 13 (DR13). Within telecommunication range, we demonstrated the tuning of the microresonator’s modes by external irradiation within the dye’s absorption peak (at 514 nm), actively inducing a blueshift at a rate of 1.2 nm/(Wcm−2). Its thermo-optical properties were also investigated through direct heating, and the compatibility of both natural phenomena was also confirmed by finite element simulations. Such results further expand the applicability of polymeric microresonators in optical and photonic devices since optically active filtering was exhibited.

Bioinspired Jumping Soft Actuators of the Liquid Crystal Elastomer Enabled by Photo-Mechanical Coupling.

Jumping, a fundamental survival behavior observed in organisms, serves as a vital mechanism for adapting to the surrounding environment and overcoming significant obstacles within a given terrain. Here, we present a light-controlled soft jumping actuator inspired by asphondylia, which employs a closed-loop structure and utilizes a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE). Photo-mechanical coupling highlights the significant influence of the light source on the actuator's jumping behavior. Manipulating the light intensity, the relative position of stimulus and light lock, and the concentration of disperse red 1 (DR1) allows precise control over both the maximum take-off velocity and jump height. Furthermore, tailoring the size of the LCE actuator offers a means of regulating jumping behavior. Upon exposure to 460 nm LED irradiation, our actuator achieves remarkable performance, with a maximum jumping height of 10 body length (BL) and take-off velocity of 62 BL/s. These actuators accumulate and rapidly release energy, enabling the effective transportation of microcargos across substantial distances. Our research yields valuable insights into the realm of soft robotics, underscoring the pivotal importance of photo-mechanical coupling in the field of soft robotics, thereby serving as a catalyst for inspiring continued exploration of agile and capable systems by prestoring elastic energy.

Deciphering the origin of the first steps in the degradation of azo dyes: a computational study.

Azo dyes find applications across various sectors including food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, printing, and textiles. The contaminating effects of dyes on aquatic environments arise from toxic effects caused by their long-term presence in the environment, buildup in sediments, particularly in aquatic species, degradation of pollutants into mutagenic or mutagenic compounds, and low aerobic biodegradability. Therefore, we theoretically propose the first steps of the degradation of azo dyes based on the interaction of hydroperoxyl radical (•OOH) with the dye. This interaction is studied by the OC and ON mechanisms in three azo dyes: azobenzene (AB), disperse orange 3 (DO3), and disperse red 1 (DR1). Rate constants calculated at several temperatures show a preference for the OC mechanism in all the dyes with lower activation energies than the ON mechanism. The optical properties were calculated and because the dye-•OOH systems are open shell, to verify the validity of the results, a study of the spin contamination of the ground [Formula: see text] and excited states [Formula: see text] was previously performed. Most of the excited states calculated are acceptable as doublet states. The absorption spectra of the dye-•OOH systems show a decrease in the intensity of the bands compared to the isolated dyes and the appearance of a new band of the type π → π* at a longer wavelength in the visible region, achieving up to 868nm. This demonstrates that the reaction with the •OOH radical could be a good alternative for the degradation of the azo dyes.

First hyperpolarizability of the di-8-ANEPPS and DR1 nonlinear optical chromophores in solution. An experimental and multi-scale theoretical chemistry study

The solvent effects on the linear and second-order nonlinear optical properties of an aminonaphtylethenylpyridinium (ANEP) dye are investigated by combining experimental and theoretical chemistry methods. On the one hand, deep near infrared (NIR) hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements (1840–1950 nm) are performed on solutions of di-8-ANEPPS in deuterated chloroform, dimethylformamide, and dimethylsulfoxide to determine their first hyperpolarizablity (βHRS). For the first time, these HRS experiments are carried out in the picosecond regime in the deep NIR with very moderate (≤3 mW) average input power, providing a good signal-to-noise ratio and avoiding solvent thermal effects. Moreover, the frequency dispersion of βHRS is investigated for Disperse Red 1 (DR1), a dye commonly used as HRS external reference. On the other hand, these are compared with computational chemistry results obtained by using a sequential molecular dynamics (MD) then quantum mechanics (QM) approach. The MD method allows accounting for the dynamical nature of the molecular structures. Then, the QM part is based on TDDFT/M06-2X/6-311+G* calculations using solvation models ranging from continuum to discrete ones. Measurements report a decrease of the βHRS of di-8-ANEPPS in more polar solvents and these effects are reproduced by the different solvation models. For di-8-ANEPPS and DR1, comparisons show that the use of a hybrid solvation model, combining the description of the solvent molecules around the probe by point charges with a continuum model, already achieves quasi quantitative agreement with experiment. These results are further improved by using a polarizable embedding that includes the atomic polarizabilities in the solvent description.

Photoaligning Polymeric Command Surfaces: Bind, or Mix?

We compare photoaligning properties of polymer layers fabricated from the same constituents: polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) and azo-dye Disperse Red 1 (DR1), either chemically attached to the PMMA main-chain, or physically mixed with it. Photoaligning properties depend on the preparation method drastically. Photoalignment was found to be far more efficient when PMMA is functionalized with DR1 compared to the case of physically mixing the constituents. This finding is supported by atomic force microscope (AFM) scans monitoring the light-induced changes at the polymer-air interface, and revealing a photoinduced mass transfer, especially in the case of functionalized PMMA.

Hydrothermal synthesis of cobalt substitute zinc-ferrite (Co1-xZnxFe2O4) nanodot, functionalised by polyaniline with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation

Fabrication and development of effective visible-light-responsive photocatalysts are required to tackle critical environmental issues. The aim of this study was to develop a nanocomposite material with improved photocatalytic activity for the degradation of industrial dyes such as Reactive Orange-16 (RO-16), Reactive Blue (RB-222), Reactive Yellow-145 (RY-145), and Disperse Red-1 (DR-1) without the need for a post-separation process after use. Here we report the hydrothermal synthesis of nanodots of Co1-xZnxFe2O4 (x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), coated with polyaniline, by in situ polymerization. The Co1-xZnxFe2O4 nanodots, coated with polyaniline (PANI) nanograins, facilitated optical properties by easily capturing visible light. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images have confirmed the single-phase spinel structure of Co1-xZnxFe2O4 nanodot and nano-pore size of the Co1-xZnxFe2O4/PANI nanophotocatalyst. The specific surface area of the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) of the Co1-xZnxFe2O4/PANI photocatalyst was determined to be 24.50 m2/g by multipoint analysis. The final Co1-xZnxFe2O4/PANI (x = 0.5) nanophotocatalyst showed high efficiency in the catalytic degradation of toxic dyes (∼98% within 5 min), with good mechanical stability and recyclability under visible light irradiation. The nanophotocatalyst was re-used and its efficiency was largely maintained, even after seven cycles (∼82%) of degradation. The effects of various parameters, such as initial dye concentration, nanophotocatalyst concentration, initial pH of dye solution, and reaction kinetics were studied. According to the Pseudo-first-order kinetic model, photodegradation data followed the first-order reaction rate (R2 > 0.95) of degradation of dyes. In conclusion, a simple and low-cost synthesis process, speedy degradation and excellent stability of polyaniline-coated Co1-xZnxFe2O4 nanophotocatalyst could be used as a promising photocatalyst for dye-wastewater treatment.

Sensitive Detection of Doped Polymer Thin Films Using Terahertz Metamaterial Based on Analog of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

We propose a novel terahertz (THz) metamaterial (MM)-based sensor for the sensitive detection of doped polymer thin films. The MM constructed by periodic quasi-ring resonators can generate the analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) at the THz region and work in a wide range of incident angles. The simulated results show that the frequency and magnitude of the EIT-like resonance can be, respectively, affected by the refractive index and dielectric loss of the analyte, which is further explained by a coupled harmonic oscillator model. The theoretical sensitivity of the proposed sensor is calculated as 185 GHz/RIU [refractive index unit (RIU)], showing a good sensing capability. In experiments, the dispersed red 1 (DR1)-doped polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) thin films with a subwavelength thickness of 600 nm were covered on the MM surface. The measured results show that the EIT-like resonance experiences frequency redshift and magnitude attenuation as the doping concentration increases, indicating the addition of DR1 can lead to the increase in both refractive index and dielectric loss of the PMMA thin film. The proposed MM-based sensor can successfully identify the dielectric change of extremely thin polymer films caused by doping, offering a novel way to achieve high-sensitivity thin-film sensing.

Frequency-resolved microscopic second-order hyperpolarizability of azochromophores: a study on nonlinear all-optical switching applications.

Azochromophores present interesting optical properties for application in all-optical switches (AOSs), such as ultrafast photoisomerization and considerable nonlinear optical response. However, determining the frequency-resolved microscopic second-order hyperpolarizability (real and imaginary parts) related to the pure electronic effects of molecules in solution is a challenging task. In this context, we have used femtosecond-laser induced nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) measurements to obtain the electronic nonlinear refraction (n2(ω)) and two-photon absorption spectra (α2PA(ω)) of four azochromophores dissolved in methanol and acetone. The measurements ranging from ∼600 up to ∼1300 nm were performed in Disperse Red 1 (DR1), Disperse Red 13 (DR13), Disperse Red 19 (DR19), and Disperse Orange 3 (DO3). Because we carried the solution in a silica cuvette and used a short focal length, we were able to measure the solution's nonlinearities with high precision, as the silica from the cuvette walls worked as a suitable reference medium. Consequently, we precisely determined n2(ω), α2PA(ω), and the second-order hyperpolarizability (γ(ω)) for all molecules and explained the different magnitudes based on the push-pull character. Furthermore, the solvation effect due to the change from methanol to acetone solvent on the n2(ω), α2PA(ω), and γ(ω) is also reported. The results were elucidated using the sum-over-states (SOS) approach within the few-energy-level model and the results were obtained via quantum-chemical calculations using the cubic response function formalism within the density functional theory framework. Finally, we used these results to determine the frequency-resolved figure-of-merit for all-optical switching applications. Our results suggest that chromophores have the potential for applications in AOS based on Fabry-Perot filters.

Raw sunflower seed shell particles as a green adsorbent for the adsorption of synthetic organic dyes from wastewater

AbstractIn this work, raw sunflower seed shell particles (RSSSP) as a green adsorbent were used to remove disperse red 1 (DR1), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green (MG), and methylene blue (MB) dyes from synthetic wastewater. Various analyzes, including fourier transform infrared, field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, were performed, which determined the morphology, particle size, surface area, and pore size of RSSSP. The effect of environmental factors on the adsorption ability of the RSSSP was investigated in detail. The results of this study showed that RSSSP has high adsorption efficiency toward organic dyes, and was comparable with other natural and synthetic adsorbents. The results showed that Freundlich isotherm and pseudo‐second‐order models describe the adsorption of the dye onto RSSSP. Additionally, the maximum adsorption capacity of DR1, CV, MG, and MB onto RSSSP was found to be 85, 81, 120, and 98 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process of the studied dyes was exothermic. In addition, the RSSSP can be used in several adsorption–desorption cycles. The calculated efficiency for textile wastewater based on the COD test is 90% using RSSSP. Finally, the RSSSP could be used as an efficient low‐cost adsorbent for the adsorption of industrial dyes from wastewater.

Optically tunable metal-dielectric diffractive structures

Hybrid metal-polymer micropillar arrays are elaborated by solvent-assisted embossing techniques and subsequent gold deposition. The polymer is poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) grafted with Disperse Red 1 (DR1) azobenzene derivatives. This photochromic material exhibits spectacular photomechanical properties. Under off-normal $p$-polarized illumination in the absorption band of the DR1, the metal-polymer hybrid micropillars bend in a direction determined by the light polarization. The deformation remains stable when the light excitation is turned off. The optically driven modification of the pillar shape allows us to tune the optical properties of the pillar arrays. Very large intensity changes are measured in the diffraction spectra at zero order (specular reflection), first order, and second order, with almost on and off switching of the diffraction efficiency. The photoinduced bending of the micropillars can be fully reversed by switching the linear light polarization to the orthogonal $s$-polarization state. This allows us to restore the initial optical properties of the pillar array. The polarization-controlled reversibility of the pillar deformation suggests a complex photoinduced deformation mechanism involving stress and stress release assisted by the change in the viscoelastic properties of the polymer under illumination in the absorption band of the DR1 chromophore.

The Effect of Molecular Orientation in Disperse Red-1 Film on Its Refractive Index

The refractive index of materials is an important physical quantity in the design of various photonic devices. For thin-film based devices, the fabrication method should be compatible with existing processes in microelectronic fabrication and allow for controlling the refractive index. In this research, the material used is a polar Disperse Red 1 (DR1) molecule. The film fabrication was carried out using the physical vapor deposition method which had been equipped with an electric poling installation. The poling of the electric field during the deposition process was applied perpendicular to the substrate. The thickness measurement and the refractive index of the films were carried out using a reflectometer where the light was incident perpendicular to the substrate. The refractive index was determined by the multiple beam interference method. As a result, it was found that the application of an electric field causes a change in the orientation of the molecules, which were initially parallel to the substrate to become perpendicular. Increasing the field strength further reduces the number of molecules parallel to the substrate. This correlates with a decrease in the refractive index of the film.

Demonstration of a flexible electro-optic polymer modulator with a low half-wave voltage for ECG signals acquisition

Polymer-based electro-optic (EO) modulators have the advantages of low half-wave voltages and a low-cost preparation process and thus have extensive application prospects. A flexible, low half-wave voltage SU-8 Mach–Zehnder (M-Z) EO polymer modulator was proposed for human electrocardiogram (ECG) signal detection; polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as the substrate, and crosslinked polymer disperse red 1 (DR1)/SU-8 was used as the waveguide core layer. PDMS surface modification and SU-8 polarization were achieved, and the device was prepared by spin coating, ultraviolet (UV) lithography, wet etching and low-temperature sputtering. The experimental results show that the modulator initially operates in a linear operating regime under unbiased voltage conditions, and direct linear modulation of the voltage can be realized. After the preparation process, the low half-wave voltage was measured to be 2 V with a core size of 4000 μm×22000 μm, and the loss of the device was −2.1 dB.

Formation of reactive isocyanate group-containing polymers via Lossen rearrangement

We report an efficient and phosgene-free method for the synthesis of isocyanate group (NCO)-containing polymers via Lossen rearrangement. The key monomer of N-acetoxymethacrylamide (AMAA), possessing N-acetoxy amide (AA) group was synthesized from the reaction of N-hydroxymethacrylamide (MHA) with acetic anhydride. By adjusting the feed ratio of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and AMAA, a series of AA-containing polymers (P1-P3) were prepared by free-radical polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the AA groups in polymers P1-P3 can be readily converted to isocyanate groups by heating at 130 ℃ to afford the NCO-containing polymers P4-P6 with conversion percent of 60, 77 and 78, respectively. Furthermore, the AA-containing polymers can be used as a latent NCO-containing polymer for further chemical modification, such as in-situ grafting reaction with hydroxyl compounds. The spectroscopic analyses confirmed that the dye functional group of disperse red 1 (DR1) was successfully grafted on either NCO- or AA-containing polymers.

Investigating functional performance and substituent effect in modelling molecular structure, UV-visible spectra, and optical properties of D-π-A conjugated organic dye molecules: a DFT and TD-DFT study

The molecular structure, UV-visible spectra, and optical properties of D-π-A conjugated organic dye molecules (Disperse Red 1 (DR1) and Disperse Red 73 (DR73)) were analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and compared with azobenzene molecule to study the effect of donor and acceptor substituents on the molecular properties. The performance of DFT functionals is investigated using B3LYP hybrid functional and three long-range corrected functionals (CAM-B3LYP, LC-ω PBE, and ω B97XD) in conjunction with 6-31G(d,p) basis set. Using TD-DFT, we calculate the vertical excitation energies and transition dipole moment values for 100 excited states. These values were further utilized to calculate frequency dependent polarizability under sum-over-states (SOS) formalism and refractive index of these molecular systems. We observe that for azobenzene and DR1 molecules, ω B97XD predicted wavelengths corresponding to peak absorbance closest to the experimental results, while for DR73 molecule, B3LYP gave better prediction. Large polarizability response is also observed for these molecules (DR1 and DR73) in comparison to parent azobenzene structure due to charge transfer between donor and acceptor groups. For DR1 and DR73 molecules, αxx component of polarizability dominates in contrast to azobenzene where αyy dominates. The HOMO → LUMO transition during excitation contributes to the peak molecular response in simulated UV-visible spectra. The high polarizability response of selected D-π-A conjugated molecules in comparison to parent molecule suggests that these molecules are promising candidates for tailor-made photonic and optoelectronic device development. Molecules and polymers with a conjugated chain structure such as the organic molecule Disperse Red-19 (DR-19) have delocalized π-electrons along the conjugation chain of the molecule and are easily moved by external electric fields, so that these materials have a large electrical polarizability and exhibit an optical response. which is quite high and very fast. This research was conducted with the aim of studying the surface effect of the Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) substrate in regulating the molecular orientation of the DR-19 film and the effect of the external electric field (E =1.9 MV/m) in regulating the molecular orientation of the DR-19 film. The fabrication method used is the E-PVD method, namely the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) method assisted by an external electric field. ) and the electric field E = 1.9 MV/m. The films were analyzed and characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The XRD characterization results showed that with the help of an external electric field of 1.9 MV / m, the resulting film showed an increased structural order, marked by the formation of a crystalline structure in the DR-19 film. The E-PVD method (PVD method assisted by an external electric field E) is very effective in arranging DR-19 molecules so that the molecules can be arranged in an orderly parallel perpendicular to the surface of the ITO substrate.

Decolorization of acid blue 29, disperse red 1 and congo red by different indigenous fungal strains

Azo dyes are toxic and recalcitrant environmental pollutants in wastewater and soil in many industrial sites in Asia and Arabic countries. The aim of this study was to find fungal species useful in wastewater treatment and soil remediation efforts. We assessed the ability of different indigenous Aspergillus strains (i.e. A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger and A. terreus) to degrade the azo dyes Acid Blue 29 (AB29), Disperse Red 1 (DR1) and Congo Red (CR). The optimal conditions for dye decolorization by the above-mentioned strains appeared to be as follows: temperature range 30–35 °C, pH 7, glucose as the carbon source (10 g/L), ammonium sulphate as the nitrogen source (1.5 g/L) and 100 mg/L initial dye concentration. The Aspergillus strains decolorized all azo dyes more than 86%. The HPLC and GC-MS analyses confirmed that aniline (retention time 9.0 min), 3-nitroaniline (retention time 15.92 min), 4-nitroanline (retention time 17.81 min), N,N’ diethyl-1,4-phenylendiamine (retention time 18.184 min), and benzidine (retention time 15.07 min) were formed as the intermediate metabolites of dye degradation. All Aspergillus strains decolorized 85% of the dyes in synthetic wastewater.

Organic molecules with a conjugated chain structure such as the Disperse Red-1 (DR-1) molecule are known as potential materials for photonic device applications. The aim of this research is to study the surface effect of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) substrate and the external electric field of 2.6 MV / m in regulating the orientation of the DR-1 film molecules on the surface of the ITO substrate. The fabrication method used is the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) method assisted by an external electric field. This method is a modification of the conventional PVD method which is equipped with the addition of an external electric field (E) in the chamber. The film was made on the surface of the ITO substrate with the deposition of DR-1 molecules in a variation of the external electric field, namely zero field and E = 3.3 MV / m. The films were analyzed and characterized using XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction measurement analysis showed that the DR-1 molecules were arranged in an orderly manner parallel to the surface of the ITO substrate, indicating an indication of the strong surface effect of the ITO substrate from the hydrogen bonding of the DR-1 molecule with the ITO substrate. The results of spectroscopic measurements show that with an increase in the external electric field, there is an increase in the effect of aggregation of molecules arranged in an orderly manner perpendicular to the surface of the ITO substrate.

PENGARUH MEDAN LISTRIK TERHADAP ORIENTASI MOLEKUL DISPERSE RED-19 TERDEPOSISI DI ATAS SUBSTRAT SILANE DENGAN METODE PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION

Molecular Disperse Red 19 (DR-19) is known as a potential material for photonic device applications such as optical switching and optical data storage. For the application of this photonic device, a good quality film is needed, which has a flat surface, homogeneous thickness, optical stability, and good optical properties.This study aims to examine the effect of the silane substrate surface and the external electric field of 3.3 MV / m in regulating the molecular orientation of the DR-19 film on the silane substrate surface.The fabrication method used is the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) method assisted by an external electric field. The film was made on the surface of the silane substrate with the deposition of DR-19 molecules in a variety of external electric fields, namely no electric field (zero field) and the electric field E = 3.3 MV / m. The films were analyzed and characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The results of the X-ray diffraction measurement analysis show that the DR-19 molecules are stacking perpendicular to the surface of the silane substrate, which shows an indication of the strong surfactant effect of the substrate from the hydrogen bonding of the DR-19 molecule with silane substrate. The results of spectroscopic measurements show that with the increase in the external electric field, there is an increase in the effect of aggregation of molecules arranged in an orderly manner perpendicular to the surface of the silane substrate.
