Interaction of C, N and O interstitial solute atoms with screw dislocations in HfNbTaTiZr high entropy alloy

Using density functional theory (DFT), we characterize the interaction of screw dislocations with interstitial impurities, in particular oxygen, nitrogen and carbon, in the HfNbTaTiZr alloy of body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. Considering different configurations representative of the disordered solid solution alloy, we evidence a noticeable core spreading of the screw dislocation whether with or without solute, associated with a wide range in dislocation-solute interaction energy, which is found to be mainly attractive for the three investigated impurities. This interaction energy is shown to be highly influenced by the type of the metal atoms in the neighbourhood of the solute. Notably the more BCC elements are present around the solute (either Nb or Ta), the more repulsive this interaction is.

Mechanical properties and rate-sensitive deformation of AA6063 aluminum alloys at 298 K, 78 K, and 4 K

The mechanical properties and rate-sensitive deformation of T4 and T6 AA6063 aluminum alloys have been analyzed at 298 K, 78 K, and 4 K. The strength, ductility, and work hardening capacity of two alloys increase with decreasing deformation temperature. Plastic deformation of AA6063-T4 is accompanied by adiabatic flow stress instabilities at 4 K and the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect at 298 K. The alloy shows a better synergy of flow stress and work hardening than the T6 condition, determined by the underlying microstructure. The limited ability of dislocation storage in T6 alloy arises from shearing β″ particles and the enhanced dislocation annihilation occurring in pure Al matrix. The failure of the alloys is promoted by void nucleation at intermetallic particles before the Considére criterion is fulfilled. AA6063-T6 exhibits positive strain rate sensitivity (SRS) at three temperatures. Dislocations-β″ particle interactions determine its SRS and are a rate-controlling process at 298 K. AA6063-T4 shows negative strain rate sensitivity (nSRS) at 298 K controlled by dislocation-solute interactions. Data for SRS and thermodynamic deformation parameters characterizing different mechanisms in T4 and T6 alloys between 4 K and 298 K are discussed. The results indicate that plastic deformation produces vacancies by jogs' dragging at 298 K, but this process does not occur at 78 K and 4 K.

Atomistic simulations reveal strength reductions due to short-range order in alloys

A theory for strengthening for multicomponent non-dilute alloys possessing short-range order (SRO) has recently been developed. The theory predicts that, in addition to a well-known athermal strengthening, there is a notable effect of SRO on the solute–dislocation interactions that can decrease or increase the strength relative to a random alloy. Here, carefully designed atomistic simulations in a model binary NbW alloy are used to demonstrate that alloy strength due to solute–dislocation interactions can be increased or decreased, depending on the SRO and consistent with theoretical predictions. Specifically, SRO is introduced using fictitious solute–solute interactions in an alloy system with very small true solute–solute interactions, and the Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) method is then used to compute the energy barriers for edge dislocation motion for various levels of SRO. Energy barriers, and hence alloy strengths, can be decreased when the Warren-Cowley SRO parameters are negative (attraction of unlike solutes). The theoretical predictions for the same system are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the simulation results. These findings demonstrate the unexpected possibility of reduced strength due to SRO and also further validate the analytical theory as a tool to guide alloy design.

Softening by spinodal decomposition in Au–Cu–Ni–Pd–Pt high-entropy alloys

At high temperatures, homogeneous solid solutions are formed in AuCuNiPdPt and AuNiPdPt alloys while annealing below critical temperatures causes decomposition into two chemically different solid solutions [1,2]. This particular circumstance is used to generate distinct variations in composition and to investigate their effect on the mechanical properties of AuCuNiPdPt and AuNiPdPt alloys. Various annealing treatments in terms of temperature and time lead to different microstructures allowing to evaluate the effect of the chemical compositions and their size on the mechanical properties. In any case, softening of the alloys is obtained. Moreover, the hardness is found to decrease with increasing amplitude of the concentration modulation and increasing size of the decomposed solid solutions. The results indicate that the effect of solid solutions on strength is not only dependent on solute-dislocation interactions but also affected by specific solute-solute interactions.

Investigation of chemical short range order strengthening in a model Fe–12Ni–18Cr (at. %) stainless steel alloy: A modeling and experimental study

Solid solution strengthening remains the basis for many industrial alloys, yet chemical short-range order (CSRO) can also play a significant role in the strengthening of alloys with appreciable alloying additions, such as in Austenitic stainless steels. In this work, we study the evolution of CSRO under various annealing temperatures and its role on the mechanical strength of a ternary Fe–12Ni–18Cr (at.%) alloy using molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo atomistic simulations and experimental measurements from mechanical microindentation and atom-probe tomography (APT). A general model that incorporates the role of CSRO into a solute–solution strengthening model is proposed, based on a family of analytical models due to Varvenne et al. (2016) which takes into account dislocation-solute misfit interaction, and a more recent extension due to Nag and Curtin (2020) which incorporates the role of solute–solute interactions during dislocation slip. Predictions of the modified model are validated against MD shearing simulations using two commonly used embedded atom model (EAM) interatomic potentials for Austenitic stainless steel alloys, and mechanical microindentation experiments on cast alloys of the same composition. Our results suggest that, while significant CSRO is predicted in the simulations, there is little experimental evidence in cast and annealed alloys analyzed by APT.

Atomistic analysis of temperature-dependent dislocation dynamics in Ni3Al-based intermetallic alloys

In this study, we investigate the dynamics of superlattice edge dislocations composed of partial dislocations, complex stacking faults, and antiphase boundaries in binary and ternary Ni-based alloys (γ’ phase) with the L12 structure. In the case of Ni3Al, the dislocation velocity decreases with increasing temperature at low applied shear stress, mainly owing to the phonon drag effect. Meanwhile, in the case of ternary alloys constructed by exchanging Ni atoms with Co atoms in Ni3Al, the effects of temperature on dislocation motion are more complex. At low applied shear stress, the dislocation motion is disturbed by solute Co (i.e., solid-solution strengthening). In this case, the temperature promotes dislocation motion because the potential energy barrier dominates the thermally activated dislocation dynamics. In contrast, when the applied shear stress increases, the temperature suppresses dislocation motion owing to the phonon drag effect. The drag effect also increases with increasing Co concentration. The origin of the energy barrier due to solute atoms at low applied shear stress can be explained by the interaction between the partial dislocation and solute Co. Meanwhile, the origin of the drag effect on the superlattice dislocation dynamics is discussed on the basis of atomic vibrational motions and wavy dislocation behaviors. In this study, we propose and construct a map showing the dominant effects on complex superlattice dislocation dynamics. The map has energy-barrier-dominated, phonon-drag-dominated, and sound velocity-dominated regions, suggesting that the dominant factor changes depending on the applied shear stress, temperature, and strength of the solute–dislocation interaction.

Fascinating microstructural evolution during consolidation and remarkable hardening behaviour of micro alloyed Al-Cu-Ni alloys

Ultrafine B2 NiAl and vacancy ordered phase (Al3Ni2 type) (Cu) evolve during consolidation of mechanically alloyed Al-Cu-Ni alloys without and with micro alloying addition of Zr and or Ti and results in high hardness of the alloys. Al-Cu-(Ni15)-Zr alloy consolidated by spark plasma sintering exhibits a remarkable hardness value of 7.2 GPa. Wide range of hardness values of the alloys indicates a significant effect of composition as well as synthesis route. Hardening behaviour through point defect hardening has been demonstrated in terms of constitutional vacancy concentration as well as solute dislocation interaction. Lattice parameter, bulk density, porosity anddislocation density of the alloys have been measured to understand the hardening mechanism further. TEM analysis and wear behaviour are carried out to justify the phase formation and strengthening mechanism of the alloys, respectively.

Strengthening model development and effects of low diffusing solutes to coarsening resistance in aluminum alloys

A modified Orowan strengthening model is proposed to account for finite rod-shaped precipitates with hemispherical caps in aluminum alloy systems. A combined computational and experimental approach is used to study the influences of anisotropic Orowan looping and solute-dislocation interaction on temperature-dependent yield strength. The strengthening model is validated with a dataset containing 297 experimental precipitate geometries, chemistries, temperatures, and strength measurements, and achieves a strong predictive correlation of 0.8713 with experimentally measured yield strengths. Under conditions that are applicable to coarsening, constant particle volume fraction and aspect ratio, the model predicts that short rod precipitates provide far superior strengthening effects compared to plate precipitates. A cast Al-Si-Mg-Cu alloy with rod-shaped Q-phase (Al3Cu2Mg9Si7) precipitates was developed with a novel chemistry exploring the use of low-diffusivity elements (Mn, Ni, V, Zr) to limit precipitate coarsening. The thermodynamic behavior of Mn, Ni, V, and Zr across the Q-phase interface is examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. and atom-probe tomography (APT). DFT calculations utilizing TEM identified Q-phase/Al-matrix interfaces show that Mn, Ni, V, and Zr preferentially segregate to the Q-phase precipitate boundaries which suggests inhibition of precipitate coarsening and higher strengths after temperature exposure. Atom-probe tomography confirms solute atom partitioning/segregation at the Q-phase/Al-matrix interface, found in the modified commercial AS7GU alloy (A356 +0.5%Cu), which supports these observations.

Integrated experimental and modeling approach for hot deformation behavior of Co–Cr–Fe–Ni–V high entropy alloy

The study aims to investigate the hot deformation behavior of Co–Cr–Fe–Ni–V high entropy alloy (HEA) at temperatures ranging from 1073 K to 1373 K and strain rates of 0.001, 0.01, 1, and 10 s−1, and to generate processing maps using dynamic materials modeling (DMM) to identify the optimum processing domain for industrial applications. The material's hardening and softening characteristics are also explored under various hot working conditions. Deformation twinning is observed in materials deformed at 0.1 s−1 at 1273 K and 1373 K, contributing to their observed hardening. The mean free path of dislocation defines the material's strength, and the transition point from dynamic recovery to dislocation-dislocation or dislocation-solute interaction occurs when the mean free path of dislocation reaches its lowest value. The inhomogeneity in the deformed sample is correlated with the strain field distribution using an integrated approach using finite element method (FEM) modeling and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) results. EBSD characterization reveals the presence of deformation bands and annealing twins at low and high temperatures, respectively. Additionally, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is proposed to predict the hot deformation behavior of Co–Cr–Fe–Ni–V HEA, with promising results, as evidenced by a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9983 and an average absolute relative error (AARE) of 2.71% on the test dataset.

Effect of solute distribution on the screw dislocation motion in bcc Fe-based systems

Screw dislocation motion in bcc Fe plays an important role in establishing the strong temperature and strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, which in turn promotes the ductile to brittle transition phenomenon in steel. Addition of solute atoms, possessing attractive interaction with screw dislocations, is believed to reduce the flow stress sensitivity of Fe. The present work intends to study the effect of Ni and Cu solute atom distribution on the screw dislocation motion in bcc Fe using molecular statics (MS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. MS simulation results predict that the local distribution of Ni atoms around the screw dislocation greatly influences the Peierls stress of Fe at 0 K temperature, while Cu atom distribution has marginal effect. Moreover, the presence of Ni/Cu atoms ahead of the dislocation line helps to reduce the Peierls stress due to the dislocation-solute attractive interaction. MD simulation was performed on random Fe-Ni and Fe-Cu alloys to determine the effect of solute concentration on the temperature sensitivity of flow stress of Fe. The results showed that addition of Ni/Cu reduces the flow stress sensitivity of Fe by inducing solid solution softening effect at low temperature regime. Ni was found to be more effective than Cu in reducing the flow stress temperature sensitivity of Fe. The rationale behind the softening action of Ni and Cu is discussed in terms of changing the differential displacement plot and unstable stacking fault energy of Fe.

Solid solution softening and hardening in binary BCC alloys

Solute-dislocation interaction energies are calculated using Density Functional Theory and the 2-D lattice Greens function approach for Al, Ti, Cr, Fe, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Hf, Ta, W, Re solutes in BCC Nb, Ta, Mo, and W. The predictions are then used in an extension of the Rao-Suzuki model to analyze the experimentally observed solid solution strengthening and softening in Nb-X, Fe-X, Ta-X, Mo-X and W-X crystals, X= Mo, W, Ta, Si or Re. DFT predictions for the solute dislocation interaction energies for Fe-Si, taken from the literature are also analyzed. The original Rao-Suzuki model considers kink migration controlled mobility of screw dislocations in body-centered cubic (BCC) structures and is valid for high solute concentrations (>5 at%) as well as above a critical temperature. Here, we extend the Rao-Suzuki model to include kink-pair nucleation statistics in the presence of solutes which is expected to be the rate limiting process at low temperatures (<0.2Tmelt). Such an extension should be valid up to low concentration of solutes as well as fairly low temperatures. The key parameters required for the model are solute – ½[111] screw dislocation interaction energies in pure Nb, Ta, Mo or W. These parameters were derived in this paper using first principles calculations. Using the calculated interaction energies, the model satisfactorily reproduces experimentally observed solution strengthening data in Nb-Mo, Nb-W, Nb-Re crystals at temperatures from 77 to 600K, for solute concentrations in the range 8.5 to 19 at% for Mo, 6 to 15 at.% for W and 5 to 9 at.% for Re. Similar agreement is found for strengthening/softening data for Ta-W, Ta-Re, Ta-Nb, Fe-Si, Mo-Re and W-Re crystals in the temperature range 77 – 600K. We also explore sensitivity of these predictions to the variation in the solute-dislocation energies. In Ta-W, a 10% variation (±0.015 eV) produces a modest change in solution hardening, which is within experimental error. The refined Rao-Suzuki model can be used in designing high strength, multi-component BCC alloys for high temperature applications.

Dislocation-obstacle interaction evolution in rate dependent plasticity of AlSi10Mg as-built microstructure by laser powder bed fusion

Novel microstructural features obtained from laser powder bed fusion methods challenge our understanding of the rate controlling mechanisms for plasticity which are important for structural applications. The strain rate dependent plasticity of as-built AlSi10Mg laser powder bed fusion samples was systematically studied as a function of stress state (tension and compression) and strain rate at 293 and 78 K. Utilizing constant strain-rate and rate-change testing methodologies, a strong dependence of flow stress on strain rate was revealed for both stress states. The compressive yield stresses have a potent strain rate sensitivity in both quasi-static (10−4-10−1 s−1) and medium-dynamic (1-5 s−1) strain rate regimes. A positive strain rate sensitivity was observed in all strain rates except for a shift to negative values in the 10−2-10−1 s−1 range for both tensile and compression states. This negative strain rate sensitivity was correlated with the deformation-induced microstructural evolution, i.e., manifested as a gradual transition in the dominant dislocation-precipitate interaction mechanism from shearing to looping, along with the disappearance of dislocation-solute interaction in the form of dynamic strain aging (DSA). The precise measurement of activation volume evolution with flow stress further confirmed the transition from shearing to looping in the 10−2-10−1 s−1 range.

The origin of jerky dislocation motion in high-entropy alloys

Dislocations in single-phase concentrated random alloys, including high-entropy alloys (HEAs), repeatedly encounter pinning during glide, resulting in jerky dislocation motion. While solute-dislocation interaction is well understood in conventional alloys, the origin of individual pinning points in concentrated random alloys is a matter of debate. In this work, we investigate the origin of dislocation pinning in the CoCrFeMnNi HEA. In-situ transmission electron microscopy studies reveal wavy dislocation lines and a jagged glide motion under external loading, even though no segregation or clustering is found around Shockley partial dislocations. Atomistic simulations reproduce the jerky dislocation motion and link the repeated pinning to local fluctuations in the Peierls friction. We demonstrate that the density of high local Peierls friction is proportional to the critical stress required for dislocation glide and the dislocation mobility.

Strain rate sensitivity of binary Mg–Gd and Mg–Y solid solutions

The strain rate sensitivity (SRS) of binary Mg–Gd and Mg–Y alloys and the effect of solute on the rate-controlling mechanisms have been studied by analyzing rate changes during tension and compression tests at 78K and 298K. The steady-state SRS evaluated from the slope of Haasen plots at 78K increases with the solute concentration. The reverse behavior is observed at 298K, and the concentrated alloys exhibit the negative SRS. The activation work and the activation distance evaluated from strain rate jump tests at 78K discriminate regimes of plastic flow determined by solute–dislocation and dislocation–dislocation interactions. At the onset of plastic flow, dislocation–solute interactions control the plastic flow properties. This regime of low flow stress is represented by the activation work in the magnitude of 10−2eV and the activation distance in the range 10−2b - 10−1b. The deformation by mechanical twinning occurring early in the compression conforms to these parameters and suggest no fundamental difference in the thermally activated glide of ordinary and twinning dislocations through the field of solute obstacles. The results suggest that by-passing of Gd and Y atoms by basal dislocations occurs by sequential activation of partial dislocations. At higher flow stress, the dislocation–dislocation interactions determine the work-hardening. The thermally activated motion of jogs produced during interactions of basal and prismatic dislocations is thought to be the rate-controlling process. The activation work and the activation distance signatures of this process are W∗∼ 0.4 eV - 0.8 eV and d ∼ 0.5b - 1b, depending on the solute content.

Solutes that reduce yield strength anisotropies in magnesium from first principles

Using Labusch-type solid solution strengthening models parameterized with DFT-computed solute-dislocation interaction energies, we perform a computational search for 63 solutes across the periodic table to find those that lower anisotropy ratios (non-basal to basal CRSS) of magnesium potentially increasing its ductility per the von Mises criterion. For this purpose, we compute changes in strength for solutes as a function of composition and temperature, and compute anisotropy ratios for solutes that include both rare earth and non-rare earth elements. We specifically focus on solute-dislocation interaction energies in the following DFT-optimized dislocations as representative of three non-basal plastic deformation modes: $\ensuremath{\langle}c+a\ensuremath{\rangle}$ edge, $(10\overline{1}2)$ tension twinning edge, and the $(10\overline{1}1)$ compression twinning edge. We find that solute-induced changes in non-basal deformation modes can be approximated using a second-order polynomial in the size misfit of the solutes, which permits rapid screening of solutes. Our approach to identify solutes known to improve strengthening incorporates solute solubility, and suggests other solutes that not have been previously explored for strengthening. The 8 rare-earth solutes that our method suggests as the best, ordered by increasing anisotropy ratios at their optimal concentrations, are: Gd, Tb, Dy, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb. The 12 non-rare-earth solutes that our method suggests as the best, ordered by increasing anisotropy ratios, are: Y, Mn, Sc, Pb, Ca, Ag, Bi, Tl, Zn, Li, Ga, and Al. Of these, Gd, Nd, Er, Yb, Y, Mn, Ca, Zn, Li, and Al are used in commercial Mg alloys.

Influence of microtwins on Portevin-Le Châtelier effect of a Ni-Co based disk superalloy

Influence of microtwins (MTs) on Portevin-Le Châtelier (PLC) effect of a Ni-Co-based superalloy was investigated by tensile tests and transmission electron microscopy. Two groups of samples were pre-strained at 725 °C to produce MTs. Existence of MTs improved the alloy's yield strength, but it changed the PLC effect from type-B to type-C, and increased the serration amplitudes by ∼6 times, during tensile deformation at 400 °C. Microstructural characterizations indicate that dislocation-MT interactions lead to break of MTs in both γ matrix and γ′ precipitates, creating soft channels for dislocation glide. The high serration amplitudes were rationalized on the basis of sudden plastic flow along those soft channels and subsequently strain hardening due to dislocation multiplication. These results demonstrate that MTs influence the PLC effect much more significantly, compared with traditionally accepted dislocation-solute interactions.

Line tension induced character angle dependence of dislocation mobility in FCC alloys

We explore the character angle dependence of dislocation-solute interactions in a face-centered cubic random Fe0.70Ni0.11Cr0.19 alloy through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of dislocation mobility. Using the MD mobility data, we determine the phonon and thermally activated solute drag parameters which govern mobility for each dislocation character angle. The resulting parameter set indicates that, surprisingly, the solute energy barrier does not depend on character angle. Instead, only the zero-temperature flow stress—which is dictated by the activation area for thermal activation—is dependent on character angle. By analyzing the line roughness from MD simulations and the geometry of a bowing dislocation line undergoing thermal activation, we conclude that the character angle dependence of the activation area in this alloy is governed by the dislocation line tension, rather than the dislocation-solute interaction itself. Our findings motivate further investigation into the line geometry of dislocations in solid solutions.

The influence of shearable and nonshearable precipitates on the Portevin-Le Chatelier behavior in precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloys

The well-known mechanisms of interaction between precipitates and dislocations are shearing (for shearable precipitates) and bypassing mechanisms (for nonshearable precipitates). The transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates in precipitation hardening alloys leads to changes of dislocation motion mode and dislocation multiplication behavior, which inevitably causes different PLC behaviors. In this study, we systematically investigate the influence of shearable and nonshearable Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates on PLC behaviors by experimental characterization for precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloys. We analyze the onset strain, critical strain-rate range, serration amplitude, and propagation behavior of PLC bands in detail for AlMgScZr alloys with shearable and nonshearable precipitates, respectively. We find that the transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates changes the PLC band propagation behavior, decreases the magnitude of serration amplitude, expands the strain-rate range as well as decreases the critical strain rate between normal behavior (the critical strain increases with the increase of strain rate) and inverse behavior (the critical strain decreases with the increase of strain rate) regimes due to the different dislocation-precipitate interactions. Besides, the transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates increases the onset strain at normal behavior while decreases the onset strain at inverse behavior depending on the different roles of precipitates in the solute-dislocation interaction. Finally, we reveal the nature of influence of different dislocation-precipitate interactions on PLC behavior considering different strengthening mechanisms based on quantitative characterization on precipitates and dislocation density.

Examination of inverse Hall-Petch relation in nanostructured aluminum alloys by ultra-severe plastic deformation

To have an insight into the occurrence of inverse Hall-Petch relationship in ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum alloys produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD), ultra-SPD (i.e. inducing several ten thousand shear strains via high-pressure torsion, HPT) followed by aging is applied to an Al-La-Ce alloy. Average nanograin sizes of 40 and 80 nm are successfully achieved together with strain-induced Lomer-Cottrell dislocation lock formation and aging-induced semi-coherent Al11(La,Ce)3 precipitation. Analysis of hardening mechanisms in this alloy compared to SPD-processed pure aluminum with micrometer grain sizes, SPD-processed Al-based alloys with submicrometer grain sizes and ultra-SPD-processed Al-Ca alloy with nanograin sizes reveals the presence of two breaks in the Hall-Petch relationship. First, a positive up-break appears when the grain sizes decrease from micrometer to submicrometer which is due to extra hardening by solute-dislocation interactions. Second, a negative down-break and softening occur by decreasing the grain sizes from submicrometer to nanometer which is caused by weakening the dislocation hardening mechanism with minor contribution of the inverse Hall-Petch mechanism. Detailed analyses confirm that nanograin formation is not necessarily a solution for extra hardening of Al-based alloys and other accompanying strategies such as grain-boundary segregation and precipitation are required to overcome such a down-break and softening.

Phase-Field Modeling of Chemoelastic Binodal/Spinodal Relations and Solute Segregation to Defects in Binary Alloys.

Microscopic phase-field chemomechanics (MPFCM) is employed in the current work to model solute segregation, dislocation-solute interaction, spinodal decomposition, and precipitate formation, at straight dislocations and configurations of these in a model binary solid alloy. In particular, (i) a single static edge dipole, (ii) arrays of static dipoles forming low-angle tilt (edge) and twist (screw) grain boundaries, as well as at (iii) a moving (gliding) edge dipole, are considered. In the first part of the work, MPFCM is formulated for such an alloy. Central here is the MPFCM model for the alloy free energy, which includes chemical, dislocation, and lattice (elastic), contributions. The solute concentration-dependence of the latter due to solute lattice misfit results in a strong elastic influence on the binodal (i.e., coexistence) and spinodal behavior of the alloy. In addition, MPFCM-based modeling of energy storage couples the thermodynamic forces driving (Cottrell and Suzuki) solute segregation, precipitate formation and dislocation glide. As implied by the simulation results for edge dislocation dipoles and their configurations, there is a competition between (i) Cottrell segregation to dislocations resulting in a uniform solute distribution along the line, and (ii) destabilization of this distribution due to low-dimensional spinodal decomposition when the segregated solute content at the line exceeds the spinodal value locally, i.e., at and along the dislocation line. Due to the completely different stress field of the screw dislocation configuration in the twist boundary, the segregated solute distribution is immediately unstable and decomposes into precipitates from the start.
