Characterizing Macroporous Ion Exchange Membrane Adsorbers for Natural Organic Matter (NOM) Removal—Adsorption and Regeneration Behavior

Addressing the characterization of Natural Organic Matter (NOM) removal by functionalized membranes in water treatment, this study evaluates the effectiveness of two commercial ion-exchange membrane adsorbers: Sartobind® Q (with quaternary amines) and D (with tertiary amines). Using Suwannee River NOM (SRNOM) as a surrogate, Langmuir adsorption isotherms revealed maximum capacities (Qmax) of 2966 ± 153 mg C/m2 and 2888 ± 112 mg C/m2, respectively. Variations in flux from 50 to 500 LMH had a minimal impact on breakthrough times, proving low diffusion limitations. The macroporous (3–5 µm) functionalized cellulose-based membranes exhibited high permeabilities of 10800 L/(h m2 bar). Q maintained positive zeta potential vs. pH, while D’s zeta potential decreased above pH 7 due to amine deprotonation and turning negative above an isoelectric point of 9.1. Regeneration with 0.01 M NaOH achieved over 95% DOC regeneration for Sartobind® D, characterizing reversibility through a pH-swing. Cyclic adsorption showed that Q maintained its capacity with over 99% DOC regeneration, while D required acidic conditioning after the first regeneration cycle to mitigate capacity reduction and re-deprotonate the adsorber. These results have demonstrated the potential suitability of adsorber membranes, designed originally for biotechnological purposes, for the possible removal of disinfection byproduct precursors in drinking water treatment.

The Role of Ferrate (VI) in the Pretreatment of Algal Cells and Algal Organic Matters: A Review

Algal blooms are caused by excessive levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other plant nutrients in water. Algae and algal organic matter (AOM) pose a great threat to the quality of drinking water. This manuscript offers a systematic review of algal removal by ferrate (Fe(VI)) oxidation, including the conditions for the removal of different algae by Fe(VI) and the factors affecting the removal efficiency. On this basis, the oxidation and coagulation mechanisms of algae removal by Fe(VI) are discussed. Then, the review introduces the process combining Fe(VI) pre-oxidation with aluminum sulfate action. The addition of aluminum sulfate can further enhance the coagulation effect and reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the subsequent chlorination process by effectively removing AOM, which is recognized as a precursor of DBPs. In addition, recent studies on the combined application of Fe(VI) and Fe(II) are also reviewed. In a reasonable dose range, the synergistic effect of Fe(VI) and Fe(II) can significantly improve the removal of algae and algal toxins. Finally, this review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the applicability of Fe(VI) in removing algal material, offers guidance for the harmless treatment of algae with Fe(VI), and identifies future research questions.

Disinfection by-product formation potential in response to variability in dissolved organic matter and nutrient inputs: Insights from a mesocosm study

Changes in rainfall patterns driven by climate change affect the transport of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nutrients through runoff to freshwater systems. This presents challenges for drinking water providers. DOM, which is a heterogeneous mix of organic molecules, serves as a critical precursor for disinfection by-products (DBPs) which are associated with adverse health effects. Predicting DBP formation is complex due to changes in DOM concentration and composition in source waters, intensified by altered rainfall frequency and intensity. We employed a novel mesocosm approach to investigate the response of DBP precursors to variability in DOM composition and inorganic nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, export to lakes. Three distinct pulse event scenarios, mimicking extreme, intermittent, and continuous runoff were studied. Simultaneous experiments were conducted at two boreal lakes with distinct DOM composition, as reflected in their color (brown and clear lakes), and bromide content, using standardized methods. Results showed primarily site-specific changes in DBP precursors, some heavily influenced by runoff variability. Intermittent and daily pulse events in the clear-water mesocosms exhibited higher haloacetonitriles (HANs) formation potential linked to freshly produced protein-like DOM enhanced by light availability. In contrast, trihalomethanes (THMs), associated with humic-like DOM, showed no significant differences between pulse events in the brown-water mesocosms. Elevated bromide concentration in the clear mesocosms critically influenced THMs speciation and concentrations. These findings contribute to understanding how changing precipitation patterns impact the dynamics of DBP formation, thereby offering insights for monitoring the mobilization and alterations of DBP precursors within catchment areas and lake ecosystems.

The ideal model for determination the formation potential of priority DBPs during chlorination of free amino acids

Amino acids (AAs) account for about 15-35% of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and are known as the important precursors of nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs). Determining the formation potential (FP) of AAs to DBPs is used to reveal the key precursors of DBPs for further control, while the ideal method for N-DBPs FP of AAs during chlorination is not revealed. In this study, the ideal FP test models for five classes of priority DBPs during chlorination of four representative AAs (accounted for about 35% of total AAs) were analyzed. For haloaldehydes (HALs), haloketones (HKs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloacetamides (HAMs), and halonitromethanes (HNMs), their FPs during chlorination of four AAs were 0.1-13.0, 0.01-1.1, 0.1-104, not detectable (nd)-173, and nd-0.4 μg/mg, respectively. The FPs of priority DBPs had significant deviations between different FP test models and different tested AAs. For HALs, the model, whose chlorine dosage was determined by 15× molar concentration of AAs [Cl (mM) = 15×M](named: model II), was the ideal model. For HKs, model II was also the ideal FP test model for AAs with ≤ 3 carbons, while for AAs with 4 carbons, the model, whose chlorine dosage was determined by keeping the residual chlorine at 1±0.2 mg/L after 24 h of reaction (named: model 4), was the ideal model. For HANs and HNMs, model 4 was the ideal FP test model for most of the studied AAs. The performance of HAMs during chlorination of amino acids is totally different from other P-DBPs, and model 3 is recommended to be the ideal model, in which chlorine dosage was determined by 3× mass concentration of AAs [Cl (mg/L) = X×DOC]. This study is a reference that helps researchers select an ideal model for N-DBPs FP study of AAs.

Formation and toxicity alteration of halonitromethanes from Chlorella vulgaris during UV/chloramination process involving bromide ion

Frequent algal blooms cause algal cells and their algal organic matter (AOM) to become critical precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during water treatment. The presence of bromide ion (Br−) in water has been demonstrated to affect the formation laws and species distribution of DBPs. However, few researchers have addressed the formation and toxicity alteration of halonitromethanes (HNMs) from algae during disinfection in the presence of Br−. Therefore, in this work, Chlorella vulgaris was selected as a representative algal precursor to investigate the formation and toxicity alteration of HNMs during UV/chloramination involving Br−. The results showed that the formation concentration of HNMs increased and then decreased during UV/chloramination. The intracellular organic matter of Chlorella vulgaris was more susceptible to form HNMs than the extracellular organic matter. When the Br−: Cl2 mass ratio was raised from 0.004 to 0.08, the peak of HNMs total concentration increased 33.99%, and the cytotoxicity index and genotoxicity index of HNMs increased 67.94% and 22.80%. Besides, the formation concentration and toxicity of HNMs increased with increasing Chlorella vulgaris concentration but decreased with increasing solution pH. Possible formation pathways of HNMs from Chlorella vulgaris during UV/chloramination involving Br− were proposed based on the alteration of nitrogen species and fluorescence spectrum analysis. Furthermore, the formation laws of HNMs from Chlorella vulgaris in real water samples were similar to those in deionized water samples. This study contributes to a better comprehension of HNMs formation from Chlorella vulgaris and provides valuable information for water managers to reduce hazards associated with the formation of HNMs.

Control of chlorination disinfection by-products in drinking water by combined nanofiltration process: A case study with trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are prevalent contaminants in drinking water and are primarily linked to issues regarding water quality. These contaminants have been associated with various adverse health effects. Among different treatment processes, nanofiltration (NF) has demonstrated superior performance in effectively reducing the levels of DBPs compared to conventional processes and ozone-biological activated carbon (O3-BAC) processes. In this experiment, we systematically investigated the performance of three advanced membrane filtration treatment schemes, namely "sand filter + nanofiltration" (SF + NF), "sand filter + ozone-biological activated carbon + nanofiltration" (SF + O3-BAC + NF), and "ultrafiltration + nanofiltration" (UF + NF), in terms of their ability to control disinfection by-product (DBP) formation in treated water, analyzed the source and fate of DBP precursors during chlorination, and elucidated the role of precursor molecular weight distribution during membrane filtration in relation to DBP formation potential (DBPFP). The results indicated that each treatment process reduced DBPFP, as measured by trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP), with the SF + O3-BAC + NF process being the most effective (14.27 μg/L and 14.88 μg/L), followed by the SF + NF process (21.04 μg/L and 16.29 μg/L) and the UF + NF process (26.26 μg/L and 21.75 μg/L). Tyrosine, tryptophan, and soluble microbial products were identified as the major DBP precursors during chlorination, with their fluorescence intensity decreasing gradually as water treatment progressed. Additionally, while large molecular weight organics (60–100,000 KDa) played a minor role in DBPFP, small molecular weight organics (0.2–5 KDa) were highlighted as key contributors to DBPFP, and medium molecular weight organics (5–60 KDa) could adhere to the membrane surface and reduce DBPFP. Based on these findings, the combined NF process can be reasonably selected for controlling DBP formation, with potential long-term benefits for human health.

Comparative analysis of chlorinated disinfection byproducts formation from 4-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol during UV/post-chlorination

Nitrophenol compounds (NCs) are widely distributed in water environments and regarded as important precursors of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Herein, 4-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol were selected as representative NCs to explore chlorinated DBPs (Cl-DBPs) formation during UV/post-chlorination. Dichloronitromethane (DCNM), trichloronitromethane (TCNM), dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN), and trichloromethane (TCM) were formed from 4-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol during UV/post-chlorination, and the yields of individual Cl-DBPs from 2-amino-4-nitrophenol were higher than those from 4-nitrophenol. Meantime, increasing chlorine contact time, UV fluence, and free chlorine dose could enhance Cl-DBPs formation, while much higher values of the three factors might decrease the yields of Cl-DBPs. Besides, alkaline pH could decrease the yields of halonitromethane (HNMs) and DCAN but increase the yields of TCM. Also, higher concentrations of 4-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol would induce more Cl-DBPs formation. Subsequently, the possible formation pathways of DCNM, TCNM, DCAN, and TCM form 4-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol during UV/post-chlorination were proposed according to transformation products (TPs) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Notably, Cl-DBPs formed from 2-amino-4-nitrophenol presented higher toxicity than those from 4-nitrophenol. Among these generated Cl-DBPs, DCAN and TCNM posed higher cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, respectively. Furthermore, 4-nitrophenol, 2-amino-4-nitrophenol, and their TPs exhibited ecotoxicity. Finally, 4-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol presented a high potential to produce DCNM, TCNM, DCAN, and TCM in actual waters during UV/post-chlorination, but the Cl-DBPs yields were markedly different from those in simulated waters. This work can help better understand Cl-DBPs formation from different NCs during UV/post-chlorination and is conducive to controlling Cl-DBPs formation.

Impact of storm events on disinfection byproduct precursors in a drinking water source in the Northeastern United States

Storm events play a crucial role in organic matter transport within watersheds and can increase the concentration and alter the composition of NOMs and DBP formation potential. To assess the impact that storm events can have on drinking water quality, samples were collected and analyzed across four storm events in the Neversink River, Catskill region, New York in 2019 and 2022. Source water natural organic matter (NOM) was characterized, and the change of NOM quality was evaluated due to storm impacts. During storm events, a high level of NOM mobilization is initiated by heavy precipitation causing overland flow and a rise in the water table. In this way, storms result in increased access to stored NOM pools that are generated during inter-storm periods. A significant correlation was observed between several organic water quality parameters such as UV absorbance (UV254), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chlorine demand. Precursors for the total trihalomethanes (TTHM), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) exhibited comparable patterns with UV254, DOC, and chlorine demand for four storms. Despite the potential for increased dilution resulting from higher discharges, all organic water quality parameters, including yields of disinfection byproducts (i.e., DBP precursors), exhibited elevated concentrations during periods of higher flows. Three of the four storms showed hysteresis patterns with higher observed concentrations of organic constituents in the falling limb of the hydrographs. Precursors for the nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs) were proportional to the DOC for all four storms. The coefficient of determination (R2) for TTHM, DCAA, TCAA with UV254 is higher (R2 0.92–0.98) than corresponding correlations with DOC (R2 0.89–0.92). The R2 for UV254 showed the following hierarchy: DCAA≈TCAA>TTHM. Additionally, the R2 for DOC and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) had the following hierarchy: DCAA>TCAA>TTHM and TCAA>DCAA>TTHM respectively.A significant correlation between UV254 and DOC (R = 0.99) for all storms was observed. Chlorine demand also yielded a strong correlation (R = 0.91∼0.98) with UV254 and DOC. This research indicates that a significant and disproportionate export of NOM to source waters occurs during storm events compared to baseflow conditions. Consequently, it is recommended for drinking water treatment facilities to reassess chlorine dosages during these events. Treatment plants can employ UV254 as a tool to determine appropriate chlorine dosages, aiming to mitigate DBP formation in treated waters.

Impact of non-aged and UV-aged microplastics on the formation of halogenated disinfection byproducts during chlorination of drinking water and its mechanism

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitously present in source water and undergo ultraviolet (UV) aging in aquatic environments before entering drinking water treatment plants. The presence of MPs in drinking water can impact the formation of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during chlorine disinfection, yet the exact effect of MPs on DBP formation remain unclear. In this study, we conducted an investigation into the influence of non-aged and UV-aged MPs on halogenated DBP formation in drinking water and unveiled the underlying mechanisms. In comparison to source water samples devoid of MPs, the total organic halogen concentration was reduced by 19%–43% and 4%–13% in the drinking water samples containing non-aged and aged MPs, respectively. The differing effects on halogenated DBP formation can be attributed to the alternation in physical and chemical characteristics of MPs following UV aging. Aged MPs exhibited larger surface area with signs of wear and tear, heightened hydrophilicity, surface oxidation, increased oxygen-containing functional groups and dechlorination during the UV aging process. Both non-aged and aged MPs possess the capability to adsorb natural organic matter, leading to a reduction in the concentration of DBP precursors in the source water. However, the release of organic compounds from aged MPs outweighed the adsorption of organics. Furthermore, as a result of the surface activation of MPs through the UV aging process, the aged MPs themselves can also serve as DBP precursors. Consequently, the presence of halogenated DBP precursors in source water increased, contributing to a higher level of DBP formation compared to source water containing non-aged MPs. Overall, this study illuminates the intricate relationship among MPs, UV aging, and DBP formation in drinking water. It highlights the potential risks posed by aged MPs in influencing DBP formation and offers valuable insights for optimizing water treatment processes.

Enhanced Removal of Dissolved Effluent Organic Matter in Wastewater Using Lignin-Based Biochar Supported Fe–Cu Bimetallic Oxide Catalyst

The effluent discharged from wastewater treatment facilities frequently enters the ocean, posing a considerable threat to the health of marine life and humans. In this paper, an alkali lignin-based biochar-loaded modified Fe–Cu catalyst (FeCu@BC) was prepared to remove soluble microbial products (SMP) from secondary effluent as disinfection by-products precursors at ambient temperature and pressure. The humic acid (HA) was taken as the representative substance of SMP. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiency of HA reached 93.2% when the FeCu@BC dosage, pH, initial HA concentration, and dissolved oxygen concentration were 5.0 g/L, 7, 100 mg/L, and 1.75 mg/L, respectively. After three cycles, the removal efficiency of HA could be maintained at more than 70%. The quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (EPR) results showed that •OH and 1O2 were involved in the degradation of HA in the FeCu@BC catalyst reaction system, with 1O2 playing a dominant role. Theoretical calculations confirmed that •OH and 1O2 were more prone to attack the C=O bond of the side chain of HA. After processing by the FeCu@BC catalyst, the yield of chlorinated disinfection by-products from secondary effluent had decreased in an obvious manner. This study provides a new solution to efficiently solve the problem of chlorinated disinfection by-products from HA.

Enhanced hydrophilic organic matter removal ability of Al13 in the presence of organic matters under modified MWCNTs’ assistance

Disinfection by-products (DBPs), which formed in the process of chlorination disinfection of water, has a potential threat to human health. To date, Natural organic matter (NOM) is the precursor of DBPs so that it is important to remove the NOM to reduce the generation of DBPs. Coagulation is a key process to remove the NOM from water. However, the traditional coagulants have poor removal ability for hydrophilic(HPI) NOM. In this study, multi walled carbon nanotubes was modified with Mg, Ca and Fe to produce modified multi walled carbon nanotubes and then reacted with Al13 to produce composite coagulant. Al13 and composited coagulants were utilized to treat water with bovine serum albumin to compare the removal efficiency for HPI NOM. The results showed that the composited coagulant had a relatively high removal efficiency for organic matter, and among them, the effect of Al13-MgMW is best. The DOM removal rates of Al13 and Al13-MgMW at doses of 0.12 mmol/L were 64.8 % and 75 %, respectively. Meanwhile, Al13-MgMW had an 89.2 % removal rate for HPI NOM. The XPS and FTIR of flocs showed that the Al13-MgMW had a significant removal ability for OC substances such as proteins. MgMW has a larger specific surface area and pore volume. ESI-TOF-MS results showed the composited coagulants retain the original structure of Al13, and thus preserve and improve the advantages of Al13.

Using machine learning to trace the pollution sources of disinfection by-products precursors compared to receptor models

To increase the efficiency of managing backup water resources, it is critical to identify and allocate pollution sources. Source apportionment of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was investigated in our work. Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and the Spearman correlation analysis were used for source identification. After that, a newly hybrid model applying the fuzzy c-means and support vector regression (FCM-SVR) was employed for source apportionment compared to receptor models. The results demonstrated that the FCM-SVR model exhibited excellent generalization, and only required standardization and normalization as pre-processing steps for dataset. According to the results, microbial sources played a key role (28.1 %) in the formation potential of disinfection byproducts (DBPFPs). Additionally, shipping marine sources exhibited a substantial contribution (21.2 %) to DBPFPs. The prediction accuracy of DBPFPs was matched or exceeded receptor models, and the R2 of DOC (0.884) was significantly high. Therefore, we recommend the FCM-SVR model combined with PARAFAC to trace the source of DBPFPs as its significant effectiveness in source identification, source apportionment, and prediction accuracy, possessing the potential for further applicability in tracking more organic compounds. Environmental implicationThe disinfection byproducts precursors in water sources, which were thought to be hazardous materials in this study, are proved to be chlorinated into carcinogenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during drinking water treatment, However, the source apportionment methods of DBPs are not well developed compared to other inorganic matter, e.g., heavy metals and ammonia nitrogen. We proposed a new FCM-SVR model to trace the source of DBPs, which required easier pre-treatment and resulted a better source apportionment and prediction accuracy. As a result, it could provide a different prospect and useful management advices to trace the source of DBPs.

Study on the efficiency of the preoxidation–coagulation process in removing disinfection by-product precursors from micropolluted water

The efficiency of preoxidation–coagulation technology in removing disinfection by-product precursors and organic compounds from polluted surface water and the effect of this technology on the generation of disinfection by-products are explored.

Synergistic disinfection effects and reduction of disinfection by-products in water treatment using magnetic quaternized cyclodextrin polymer combined with chorine disinfection process

Disinfection is vital in ensuring water safety. However, the traditional chlorine disinfection process is prone to producing toxic and harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). The combination of quaternary ammonium polymer and the chlorine disinfection process can solve this shortcoming. Currently, research on the control of DBPs through the combined process is not systematic and the control effect between reducing the dosage of disinfectants and DBPs remains to be studied. Quaternized cyclodextrin polymers have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent adsorption and antibacterial properties, but their synergistic effect with chlorine disinfection is still unclear. In this study, a magnetic quaternized cyclodextrin polymer (MQCDP) is synthesized in an ionic liquid green system, and a combined process of MQCDP treatment and chlorine disinfection is established. The disinfection performance of the combined process on the actual water body along with its reducing effect on the amount of chlorine disinfectant as well as the trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) DBPs are explored. MQCDP has a porous structure with a specific surface area of 825 m2 g−1 and is easily magnetically separated. MQCDP can remove most of the natural organic matter (UV254 absorbance decreased by 97 %) in the water at the dosage of 1 g L−1 and kill bacteria with a sterilization rate of 85 %. Compared with disinfection using chlorine alone, the combined process has higher disinfection efficiency and significantly reduces the amount of disinfectant used. A concentration of 5 mg/L of NaClO was needed to meet the standard by chlorine disinfectant alone, while only 2 mg/L of NaClO can meet the standard for the combined process, indicating 60 % of the chlorine demand was reduced. More importantly, the combined process can significantly reduce the generation potential of DBPs. When 10 mg/L of NaClO is added, the THMs and HAAs generated by the combined process decreased by 65 % and 34 %, respectively, compared with the levels produced by single chlorine disinfection. The combined process can reduce the dosage of chlorine disinfectant and MQCDP can adsorb humic acid DBP precursors in raw water, thus lowering the generation of DBPs during disinfection. In summary, MQCDP has excellent separation and antibacterial ability, and its synergistic effects combined with the chlorine disinfection process are of great significance for controlling the amount of disinfectant and the formation potential of DBPs, which has potential applications in actual water treatment.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter and disinfection by-product formation potentials during the metalimnetic oxygen minimum in deep reservoirs

Abstract Dissolved oxygen (DO) is strongly linked to the origin and transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in reservoirs. During metalimnetic oxygen minimum (MOM), the reservoir is divided into four regions: surface oxygen-rich (SOR), middle anoxic (MA), middle oxygen (MO), and bottom anoxic (BA). This article focuses on the link between DOM and disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors and DO in reservoirs. The DOM in SOR was characterized by the highest proportion of protein-like components, lowest humification and aromaticity, which was indicated mainly affected by algae blooms. The DOM in MO was affected by terrestrial, with the highest ratio of humic and fulvic-like fluorescent and the highest extent of humification and aromaticity. The humification and aromaticity in MA and BA were between MO and SOR water. Moreover, according to redundancy analysis, the dominant DBPs, including trichloromethane and haloacetic acid precursors, mainly originate from a high degree of humification and aromaticity in DOM, suggesting that the terrestrial-derived DOM was a dominant source of DBP precursors. This study provides the distribution in DOM characteristics and its driven DBPs in the Sanhekou Reservoir during the MOM, which is of great significance for selecting appropriate water intake regions for subsequent water treatment.

Comparative effectiveness of sequential and synergistic (VUV/)UV and chlorine disinfection on DBPs and humic acid reduction

The widespread use of chlorine during disinfection has led to the problems of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Recently, the combination of ultraviolet (UV, 254 nm) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 nm) with chlorine has been considered a promising strategy to mitigate the formation of DBPs. This study systematically evaluated the efficacy of six different disinfection methods in abating humic acid (HA), a common precursor of DBPs (UV-Chlorine, VUV/UV-Chlorine, Chlorine-UV, Chlorine-VUV/UV, UV/Chlorine, and VUV/UV/Chlorine). Under 40 mJ/cm2 UV fluence and 3 mg/L chlorine dose, the synergistic processes yielded DBP levels below 20 μg/L, whereas sequential disinfection resulted in DBP levels exceeding 100 μg/L. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the formation of DBPs between the two methods of chlorination followed by irradiation. However, for irradiation followed by chlorination, the addition of VUV led to an increase of 50 μg/L in trihalomethanes (THMs). As the irradiation time increased, the inclusion of VUV demonstrated enhanced control of DBP levels in the sequential disinfection process. Moreover, compared to UV/Chlorine, at 13 mg/L chlorine dose in VUV/UV/Chlorine process, the inclusion of VUV expedited the appearance of peak DBPs by two minutes and reduced the peak value by 25.6 %, but the DBP yield was 12.9 times higher than that at a chlorine dose of 3 mg/L. This study, comparing six combination disinfection methods, will provide deeper insights into precursor abatement and DBP control during drinking water disinfection.

Tri-protonated ferrate: A novel electro-synthesised pre-oxidant/coagulant for NOM and DBP precursors removal in drinking water production

The generation of tri-protonated form of ferrate (H3FeVIO4+) in acidic media offers unique opportunities for drinking water treatment. Compared to the more conventional deprotonated ferrate form (FeVIO42−), H3FeVIO4+ is an extremely strong oxidant rendering it both an effective pre-oxidant and coagulant for water treatment applications. In this work, the treatment performance of H3FeVIO4+ at removing natural organic matter (NOM) and disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors was evaluated and compared against FeVIO42− and the most commonly-used iron-based coagulant: ferric chloride (FeCl3) when treating the water from two drinking water reservoirs in Australia. Results demonstrate that FeVIO42− and H3FeVIO4+ react with organic matter in intrinsically different ways, influencing the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the formation potentials of carbonaceous-DBPs upon subsequent disinfection with chlorine or chloramine. H3FeVIO4+ dosing achieved the highest DOC removal observed: 77 % for water from site A and 60 % for water from B, both significantly superior to FeVIO42− (water A: 22 % and water B:18 %) and FeCl3 (water A: 40 % and water B: 41 %) dosing. Moreover, H3FeVIO4+ pre-oxidation of water A and subsequent chlorination reduced trihalomethanes (THMs), iodo-trihalomethanes (I-THMs), haloketones (HKs) and chloral hydrate (CH) precursors by 81 %, 92 %, 53 % and 61 %, respectively, whereas for water B the THMs, I-THMs, HKs and CH precursors were reduced by 60 %, 52 %, 20 % and 58 %, respectively, heavily outperforming the performance of FeVIO42− and FeCl3 in the removal of all measured DBPs. Finally, the formation of bromate was not observed when either ferrate(VI) forms were applied, thus rendering H3FeVIO4+ an interesting alternative pre-oxidant/coagulant, even for high bromide-containing waters (such as water B: 240 μg L−1).

Oxidative abatement of saccharin by ozone and its influence on DBPs formation during postchlorination

As one of artificial sweeteners, saccharin (SAC) is widely used in food, personal care products and animal feed industry. SAC cannot be effectively metabolized by organisms and most of them are discharged into the water environment through multiple channels, leading to general detection in water source. In this study, the fate of SAC in the advanced ozone treatment of drinking water and subsequent chlorination disinfection was investigated. The results showed ozone could effectively degrade SAC and >99 % of 20 mg/L SAC could be removed under 7.10 mg/min ozone flow within 60 min. While, the mineralization was comparably low by 80 %, which indicated that ozone converted SAC into organic intermediate products. Therefore, SAC characterized with anti-chlorination property was changed to disinfection by-product precursor. Disinfection by-products including trichloromethane (TCM), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA), trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) and dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) were found during subsequent chlorination. The yields of TCM, DCAA, TCAA and DCAN were found to be 8.1, 0.4, 1.2 and 0.1 μg/mg SAC, respectively, 3, 39, 41 and 178 times of those produced by direct chlorination. In addition, the increase of ozone flux promoted the formation of disinfection by-products. Meta-alkalescence was conducive to the formation of DCAA, TCAA and DCAN in pH range of 6 to 8. The presence of anions including Cl−, NO3− and CO32− reduced the formation of TCM, DCAA and DCAN.

MIEX resin and enhanced coagulation treatment of high-bromide natural water: Chlorine reactivity and DBP precursors removal

Both organic and inorganic constituents play a major role in the formation and speciation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) under chlorination. In this study, the removal of organic and inorganic precursors to DBPs by ion exchange and coagulation was examined, and the relationships between characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM), chlorine reactivity, and the formation of DBPs in high-bromide natural water were investigated. Formation potential tests were conducted for trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetronitriles (HANs) before and after the different treatments (coagulation, magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin, and combined MIEX/coagulation). At a low resin dose, MIEX was more effective than coagulation for DOM removal. The advantages of the MIEX resin were more prominent at a high resin dose because substantial amounts of DOM and bromide were simultaneously removed. The maximum bromide uptake on the MIEX resin was 0.02 mg-Br/mL. A 4-component PARAFAC model was developed using a dataset of 148 fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) generated from pre-chlorinated and post-chlorinated samples. The maximum fluorescence intensities of humic-like components were found to be strongly correlated to THMs formation (R2 = 0.79–0.89). The MIEX treatment substantially lowered the formation of THMs (19–51%) and HANs (70–95%) due to its ability to remove humic-like DOM and bromide. The fluorescence loss for humic-like DOM was found to increase over a chlorination time of 3 days, suggesting that these compounds had stronger reactivity to chlorine compared to protein-like DOM. The chlorine reactivity of protein-like DOM increased after treatments as the residual chlorine was able to react with the less reactive fractions of DOM after chlorine-reactive compounds were removed.

Nontargeted identification of disinfection by-product precursors from soluble microbial products in municipal secondary effluent

As soluble microbial products (SMPs) can serve as precursors for disinfection by-products (DBPs), the release of SMPs from municipal secondary effluent has the potential to increase the health hazards associated with reused water. Nontargeted identification of DBPs precursors from SMPs in municipal secondary effluent was explored in the present research. The hydrophobic (HPO) fraction that constituted the major portion of the SMPs was 48.0%, and the majority of organic SMPs were composed of low molecular weight (LMW) compounds. The results showed that the HPO fraction with MW < 1 kDa component has the highest disinfection by-product formation potentials (DBPFPs). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the HPO fraction with MW < 1 kDa component was mainly composed of OC–OH (40.2%) and amide/peptide N (46.7%) functional groups. This finding was in line with the results showing the highest yields of DBPFPs in terms of HAAs (haloacetic acids) and trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm). Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-ToF-MS) data revealed that phospholipids, fatty acids, fatty acyls-fatty amides, phosphatidylcholine, glycosides, fatty acid esters, glycolipid, and steroids were the main chemical classes in SMPs. Among these chemical classes, phospholipids containing amino acids structures and fatty acids containing carboxyl functional groups with the maximum abundance could promote the formation of HAAs. This research offers a thorough characterization of SMPs derived from municipal secondary effluent. These results enable the implementation of targeted methods to decrease the formation of DBPs by identifying potential precursors of DBPs.
