PyDataBibPub: script en Python para automatizar la descarga de datos de bibliotecas públicas de España desarrollado con ChatGPT 3.5

This paper presents PyDataBibPub, a Python script to automate the downloading of Spanish public libraries data available on the webpage Bibliotecas públicas españolas en cifras. The script was written using ChatGPT 3.5 and the papers includes an exposition of its parts and how it works. PyDataBibPub and its code are available in a project in Codeberg licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, so that it can be reused, adapted and improved. For the future, it is proposed the installation of alternatives to ChatGPT 3.5, such as PrivateGPT, which works locally, privately and not depending on commercial companies, with the aim of developing more applications useful for the discipline of Library and Information Science.

There and back again: Implementing and assessing a digital reading, research and writing application

The processes of reading, research and writing are complex and intertwined. Currently, the larger educational technology landscape requires using multiple tools to do these processes. Being able to pull them into a single tool can allow learners to focus on learning and streamlining processes instead of using their cognitive bandwidth to learn multiple new technologies. The weary travellers who conducted this study set off on a journey to discover such a tool and determine its efficacy in their various online courses across the disciplines of environmental science, nutritional science, writing studies, literature and information science. The study was conducted through a series of pre- and post-surveys asking students about the strength of their reading, research and writing skills, the ease with which they performed them, and how much they enjoyed completing the tasks associated with those skills. The travellers found that many students felt more confident in their abilities, found processes to be easier and enjoyed the processes more than they did before the tool was introduced. This case study suggests that when we remove the complexity of balancing various technology tools in our online classes, students can focus on the process and not the tool; however, there was a small subset of students who did not find the tool improved their processes because they already had processes in place that they liked. This suggests that tools that ‘rule them all’ should be introduced early in an academic career and be made available by the institution throughout a student’s time at their academic institution.

An Investigation in the Interdisciplinary Nature of Digital Humanities

The disciplinary structure and dimensions of digital humanities is evolving for many years. Even though several journals focus solely on digital humanities, the interdisciplinary nature of digital humanities remains a fact. The current study is an endeavor to understand the linkage of the digital humanities with other disciplines in the universe of knowledge so that researchers from multiple subject backgrounds can carry out research on digital humanities in a more vivid manner. The present research will prove valuable for researchers, authors, and decision-makers of research and development organisations and other institutions to carry out collaborative research activities on individual and organisational levels. The research results and discussions of this research publication will enlighten the researchers from the digital humanities subject field to take a decision in a better way regarding the evolution and interdisciplinary research activities in digital humanities and the incorporation of methods and techniques from library and information science and computer science to expand the horizons of the subject field (digital humanities). The author conducted a bibliometric analysis focusing on the objectives to discover linkages and an interdisciplinary approach to digital humanities. The results infer that the highest number of authors active in research activities in the digital humanities belong to computer science followed by art and humanities and library and information science disciplines. The journals preferred for publication of research on digital humanities are also analysed, and it is found that the highest number of journals are from the literature discipline, followed by art & humanities, computer science, history, and library and information science. The publication productivity of journals is also studied, and it is found that “Digital Scholarship in the Humanities” is the most productive journal and that it belongs to the humanities discipline. In the list of the top ten most productive journals, five belong to the discipline of Library and information science. The study of citation and bibliographic coupling displays that the journals “Journal of Documentation” and “Digital Scholarship in the Humanities” are the most cited journals. During this research endeavor, emphasis is given to the subject affiliation of authors, journals and publications. It’s been found that digital humanities research is actively related to the disciplines of library and information science and computer science.

Materialidad de la información en Bernd Frohmann

Bernd Frohmann's investigations have been relevant to the field of information science and related disciplines, addressing topics such as enunciation/discourse, institutionality, dispositives, networks, agency, documentary practices, actors, associations, policies, information regimes, and materiality. These themes are shaped, in terms of materiality, through the stabilization of statements in documents or "quasi-objects" that circulate and generate social effects. Therefore, the objective is to analyze the concept of materiality in Frohmann, considering institutional, epistemological, and political implications. Literature review was conducted, including Frohmann's publications from 1992 to 2008, as well as analysis of texts that utilize that theoretical framework. The analysis is based on the assumptions of documentary ontology, whereby documentation is guided by the interplay of document properties, motivations, and agency effects. Within these assumptions, materiality serves as a heuristic resource. The publications offer a distinct overview of documentation studies, differentiating from positivist, functionalist, and/or mentalist approaches. When addressing the materiality of information, Frohmann is primarily interested in the processes it undergoes, such as how the document, as a sociotechnical object and means of materiality stabilization, generates effects in specific contexts with social, epistemological, political, and ethical implications.

Mapping Doctoral Research in Library and Information Science at Panjab University Chandigarh

The paper examines doctoral research in the library & information science discipline at Panjab University, Chandigarh, based on student’s perceptions and expectations by posing several research questions. This study aimed to gain insight into research scholar’s perspectives on earning a Ph.D. Based on primary data from 48 respondents through a structured questionnaire in April 2018, the study tabulated, analysed and interpreted information to draw inferences. As the study is limited to research scholars at the DLIS at Panjab University, the universe of the study is relatively narrow. The study’s findings reveal that most respondents had a personal decision to get admitted to the Ph.D. programme. However, there were cases where better job prospects, promotion in career, some practical problems, and the advice of a friend/senior/teacher motivated them to join doctoral research. The Panjab University was the first and last choice for the majority of respondents for doing a Ph.D. Two-thirds of respondents stated that quality of doctoral research accomplished in the DLIS PU is good and applied, and three-fifthsbelieved that the research quality has improved with time. Only one-fifth of respondentsfound quality of physical Infrastructure for doctoral research work in the Department is of the best quality. Several respondents feel that doctoral research at Panjab University and India, in general, still depends on research models applied in Western countries, especially in the UK and USA. However, a group of respondents believed it is either struggling to have its own identity or is a blend of Western and Oriental modes. Researchers will be encouraged to choose regionally relevant and application-oriented topics.

Top 100 cited papers in Information and Library science: A Brief Analysis

High number of citations of research publications expresses its intellectual and cognitive impact. Papers with high citations are considered as a landmark in relevant research field as these express trends and emerging research areas as well as set future course of research. The objective of this study is to conduct bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited studies in the discipline of Information Science and Library Science. The data for the study was obtained from “Information Science and Library Science” category of Web of Science, as indexed in the last twenty-one years (2000-2021). The outcome of bibliometric analysis included progressive growth in citation over time, annual citation density, name of journal with its impact factor, which published these papers, year of publication, type of article i.e. articles, proceedings, book reviews, reviews and poetry etc; nature of access i.e. subscribed or open access, and country of origin. Number of citations of these papers as reported by Web of Science were cross checked with numbers of citations reported by Google Scholar to understand which one provided higher number of citations for the same paper. The number of citations in the top 100 cited papers ranged from 699 to 14,273. The large numbers of the top 100 cited papers were published in MIS Quarterly. There were 40 publications authored by two, while 13 other papers were authored by more than four authors. This research is valuable for scholars in the discipline of library science and information science in identifying highly cited papers in the last 21 years, frequently pursued research areas, and names of journals publishing high quality research work in library Science discipline. The study of frequently cited papers will also guide in designing of objectives and methodology of future research studies. Journals have been charging very high subscription fee. This study will also help librarian in identifying journals which are making valuable contributions in the discipline of Information and Library Science.

Data mining topics in the discipline of library and information science: analysis of influential terms and Dirichlet multinomial regression topic model

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore to which extent data mining research would be associated with the library and information science (LIS) discipline. This study aims to identify data mining related subject terms and topics in representative LIS scholarly publications.Design/methodology/approachA large set of bibliographic records over 38,000 was collected from a scholarly database representing the fields of LIS and the data mining, respectively. A multitude of text mining techniques were applied to investigate prevailing subject terms and research topics, such as influential term analysis and Dirichlet multinomial regression topic modeling.FindingsThe findings of this study revealed the relationship between the LIS and data mining research domains. Various data mining method terms were observed in recent LIS publications, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and neural networks. The topic modeling result identified prevailing data mining related research topics in LIS, such as machine learning, deep learning, big data and among others. In addition, this study investigated the trends of popular topics in LIS over time in the recent decade.Originality/valueThis investigation is one of a few studies that empirically investigated the relationships between the LIS and data mining research domains. Multiple text mining techniques were employed to delineate to which extent the two research domains would be associated with each other based on both at the term-level and topic-level analysis. Methodologically, the study identified influential terms in each domain using multiple feature selection indices. In addition, Dirichlet multinomial regression was applied to explore LIS topics in relation to data mining.

The Landscapes of Sustainability in the Library and Information Science: Collaboration Insights

Despite the fact that the concept of sustainable development was born as early as the late 1980s, in the field of library and information science there has been a significant growth in interest only in recent years. This observation inspired the authors to explore this particular area with regards to productivity both in quantitative and qualitative terms. One of the important factors influencing scientific productivity is broadly understood research collaboration. Interestingly, in the scholarly literature dealing with the topics of scientific productivity, the researchers are most often representatives of the LIS field who study, also applying bibliometric methods, various scientific disciplines. However, so far there have been no studies on scientific collaboration concentrated around the discipline of sustainable library and information science (LIS) itself. Therefore, in this paper, the authors present the results of research into the phenomenon of co-authorship in this specific area. The results indicate not only the most important collaborating entities contributing to the research field and trends in research cooperation, but also verify certain general hypotheses put forward in the areas of the fundamental sustainable development of the discipline of sustainable LIS.

Quranic Concordance for Bibliotherapy based on Blood Group Types

Quranic concordance is in existence, but does not focus specifically on Quranic bibliotherapy. The aims of this study are to organize information on Quranic verses for bibliotherapy purposes and to find patterns of context in indexing to build a retrieval system in Quranic bibliotherapy concordance. This research uses qualitative approach with Grounded Theory method, using Nvivo to perform thematic data analysis based on narrative patterns, translation, spontaneously obtained verses, problem contexts and reflections. These concordances are limited to empirically emerging patterns representing biological information of the blood type which contribute new knowledge in Library and Information Science (LIS) discipline. Using text analysis to study doctoral-level library and information science research trends in India

This study attempts to identify research trends in doctoral-level library and information science research in India. The study uses topic modelling with Latent Dirichlet Allocation to identify research trends by collecting relevant sections from the full-text of theses awarded in the last ten years by Indian universities in the discipline of library and information science. The topic modelling results show that the entire corpus can be classified into ten topics, including information communication technology and its application in libraries. The topic-wise trends indicate that ‘ICT and its application in libraries’ are still the prime themes of choice among doctoral-level research in Indian LIS schools, followed by studies on ‘Information seeking behaviour’. The growth-wise trend analysis suggests the decline in the interest in ‘Bibliometrics/Scientometrics’ and ‘Webometrics/Website evaluation studies’. The findings of the study will be of help to academics studying the development of LIS research, as well as aspiring doctoral-level scholars who are to identify a topic for their research work.

What Does Information Science Offer for Data Science Research?: A Review of Data and Information Ethics Literature

Abstract This paper reviews literature pertaining to the development of data science as a discipline, current issues with data bias and ethics, and the role that the discipline of information science may play in addressing these concerns. Information science research and researchers have much to offer for data science, owing to their background as transdisciplinary scholars who apply human-centered and social-behavioral perspectives to issues within natural science disciplines. Information science researchers have already contributed to a humanistic approach to data ethics within the literature and an emphasis on data science within information schools all but ensures that this literature will continue to grow in coming decades. This review article serves as a reference for the history, current progress, and potential future directions of data ethics research within the corpus of information science literature.

Redesigning Library and Information Science Curriculum for Sustainable Environmental Transformation Among Students of the Department of Library and Information Science, Lead City University

The core tool for measuring the sustainability of the Library and Information Science (LIS) discipline is the curriculum which has always been a source of concern within the Nigerian space. It was on this premise that the study systematically investigated the redesigning of LIS curriculum for sustainable environmental transformation among students of the Department of LIS, Lead City University (LCU). Findings of the study showed that the majority of students opined that the redesigned curriculum is promoting sustainable environmental transformation as it is equipping the ideal 21st-century librarian with the requisite skill set (70%); redefined curriculum promotes a socially oriented librarian (53.2%); curriculum emphasizes the economic implications of the library for sustainable environmental transformation (43.3%); curriculum broadens the horizon of students further into meeting the information needs of the present clienteles without compromising the future generations (55.7%). The outcome of the study is expected to inform policy in adopting the redefined LIS LCU curriculum in Nigeria.

Information Ethics from a Multicultural Perspective: Content Analysis of Selected Library and Information Science Publications

Information ethics governs the way in which information is created, manipulated, and used. The integration of ethical values in education and coursework has been of interest in many fields, including the discipline of library and information science (LIS). Integrating information ethics in library and information science education and research is essential for preparing the next generation of information professionals for an increasingly diverse and multicultural society. This study examines information ethics from multicultural perspectives by exploring the extent to which LIS faculty view and articulate information ethics in their research and scholarly publications. The study sample was assembled by identifying the top LIS schools in the United States, selecting one LIS faculty member for each school, and examining the research output for each scholar for the use of multicultural and information ethics terminology. The text analysis was conducted using Python. Faculty were selected for the study based on their engagement in multicultural research rather than their minority status. The study results indicate that information ethics is not a primary research focus of LIS scholarship. There is no uniform reference for information ethics, and the most commonly associated terms received low percentage results. The impact of information ethics should be considered in every area of LIS scholarship and practice.

Deciphering the Status of Library and Information Science Research in BRICS Nations: A Research Visualization Approach

This paper aimed to evaluate the research trends in the discipline of library and information science (LIS) originating from the group of nations known as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). The Web of Science core collection database (WoSCC) has been used to extract the published data during the period 1989–2020. Furthermore, VoSviewer and Bibliometrix R package software have been employed for bibliometric analysis of data and data visualization. Results from data analysis indicate that China has the highest number of publications. There is a positive upward trend in scientific publications and citation patterns. Scientometrics is the most influential journal with the highest number of publications. Wuhan University is the most productive institution. Fourie I (n = 233) attains the first rank as the most prolific author based on the highest number of research publications. The overall collaboration rate of LIS publications among BRICS countries is moderate. Deep learning, machine learning, sentiment analysis, altmetrics, and artificial intelligence are the leading topics in LIS research among BRICS nations. The study will be of interest or helpful for researchers and professionals in the LIS research field who are interested in learning more about research trends in LIS in the BRICS nations.

Coupling of Serendipity, Affordance and Taxonomy in Digital Competence: HCI for Illiterates

This research work is the result of multidisciplinary research for the design of a digital learning tool from the basic level. Computer science guarantees the technical concepts of the development of the tool. At the same time, Information and Communication Science discipline describes the concepts of cognitive psychology with digital competence in computerization. The overall goal of this work is to provide an HCI component for basic level learning or HCI for the illiterate. It is about transforming a communication tool from a cognitive system to a digital learning tool adapted to the learner’s level of digital competence. The author relies on the UML class diagram to identify the affordance and serendipity of HCI property entities. The mathematical study of the similarity between these two properties allows us to update the learner’s profile. Stephanie’s approach was used when managing the learner’s profile and the digital competency taxonomy to classify the learner’s level of digital use. The principle of an expert system was taken up in this work to make the decision on the level of digital competence of the learner and to guide the solution so that the learning continues without interruption. This expert system integrates the data science of digital educational materials, defining its specificity. The algorithm of the realization summarizes the implementation of the whole approach. αβGasy@mobile is an application on Android for Malagasy language literacy. To learn the letter “l” with this application, the initially low-level learner had an intermediate assessment score after 2 hours of continuous learning. Self-constructivism has been developed and strengthened by the HCI illiterate component. We have hundreds of learners for the case study and used ten smartphones to 5 inches. On the selected samples, the results of the experiment are close to our objective. More precisely, the inactive time is almost non-existent, the learning time predefined in the system is close to reality, and the speed of return on the interaction is fluid while the evaluation is notified.

Problematyka zarządzania bibliotekami w świetle analizy zawartości wybranych czasopism naukowych z lat 2015–2020

This paper is an attempt to capture, from the pages of selected foreign scientific journals from 2015-2020, global trends in the management of various types of libraries. This, although to a very limited extent, will offer insights into the theory and practice of library management in Poland as well as factors that influence them. This study’s methodology is based on the analysis of scientific and industry literature in the library and information science discipline. The analysis of the content of three selected foreign scientific journals devoted to library management - Library Management, Journal of Library Administration, and Library Leadership and Management for 2015-2020 revealed that the most frequently undertaken topics in the field of library management are: leadership, user-oriented management, resource management human resources, strategic planning and management, change management, organizational culture, knowledge management and interlibrary and external cooperation.

Domain analytic paradigm: a quarter century exploration of fundamental ideas in information science

PurposeThe conditions that domain analysis becomes an academic school of information science (IS) are mature. Domain analysis is one of the most important foundations of IS. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss metatheoretical and theoretical issues in the domain analytic paradigm in IS.Design/methodology/approachThis paper conducts a systematic review of representative publications of domain analysis. The analysis considered degree theses, journal articles, book chapters, conference papers and other materials.FindingsDomain analysis maintains that community is the new focus of IS research. Although domain analysis centers on the domain and community, theoretical concerns on the social and individual dimensions of IS are inherent in it by its using sociology as its important approach and socio-cognitive viewpoint. For these reasons domain analysis can integrate social–community–individual levels of IS discipline as a whole. The role of subject knowledge in IS is discussed from the perspective of domain analysis. Realistic pragmatism that forms the philosophical foundation of domain analysis is argued and the implications of these theories to IS are presented.Originality/valueThe intellectual evolving landscape of domain analysis during a quarter century is comprehensively reviewed. Over the past twenty-five years, domain analysis has established its academic status in the international IS circle. Being an important metatheory, paradigm and methodology, domain analysis becomes the theoretical foundation of IS research. This paper assesses the current state of domain analysis and shows the contributions of domain analysis to IS. It also aims to inspire further exploration.

Projectability and Heritage Management of Design Knowledge: A Grass-Roots Artefact Perspective of a Longitudinal Research Project for Knowledge Management System Innovation

This article expands on design science-research (DSR) publications which—based on current knowledge management systems (KM/KMS) and practices—are conceptualizing and prototyping a novel more generative and knowledge-worker-centric approach just presented as a desirable sustainable KMS vision. The perspective taken follows up on recent systematic literature reviews and content analysis studies reporting on the poor knowledge accumulation and evolution in the design, information science, and KM disciplines. Proposed remedies and initiatives are pitched against the novel KMS development case with its longitudinal stream of research output. As the design and creation of complex innovative artefacts facing ‘wicked’ challenges are seldom complemented by concurrent research papers, rare insights are offered of how similar longitudinal DSR or KMS projects may be structured and of how the related domain’s heritage knowledge base and its fitness-for-use-and-evolution may be strengthened. Due to the cycles and progression of its prior publications, this case study is particularly suited to contribute to cumulative research synthesis and, hence, further focusses on the recently proposed notions of projecting and projectability for evaluating distances between actual real-world environments and future possible-world application-ecosystems—a perspective which may become essential acceptance criteria for publishing in DSR-related conferences and journal publishing outlets.

Scientific literacy, librarians and information literacy in the post-truth era

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to challenge librarians to reconceptualize their professional self-image and practice so that it more closely aligns with the information science discipline that is part of the Masters of Library and Information Science degree.Design/methodology/approachThis column is primarily theoretical and philosophical but also draws on the author’s observations of trends and patterns in both librarianship and changes in information needs in recent years.FindingsUrgent, high-cost information needs created by COVID-19 and climate change coexist in a reality where technological change has made traditional librarian roles and functions less critical. By developing their information science skills and strengthening their professional identity as information scientists, librarians have the opportunity to address the urgent information needs of the day while remaining highly relevant professionals.Practical implicationsLibrarians will need to strengthen their science-related skills and knowledge and begin to promote themselves as information scientists.Social implicationsLibrarians are in a position to make a meaningful contribution to two of the most pressing challenges of the day, climate change and dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.Originality/valueThis paper is relevant to all librarians at any stage of their career. It will help them to reflect on both their skillset and career path and to make any needed adjustments so that they can remain relevant in a volatile and demanding information environment.
