A Comprehensive Review of Water Quality Analysis

The effluent discharge of domestic wastewater and industrial effluents into watercourses has necessitated the development of monitoring systems with the purpose of characterizing levels of pollution. Substantial levels of pollution in emerging nations have been exacerbated by rapidly growing populations and inefficient enforcement of sustainable management initiatives. The Water Quality Index (WQI) can help fill the gap between water quality reporting and monitoring by offering a simple and effective way to assimilate and communicate results from a large amount of data. WQIs are the kind of communication tools that can facilitate knowledge sharing between scholars and the general public. The degradation of natural water resources, such as lakes, streams, and estuaries, is the most significant problem facing humanity. Water that is not clean has far-reaching effects on all aspects of life. Water resource management is therefore essential if it is to maximize water quality. If data are analyzed and water quality can be predicted in advance, water pollution may be efficiently addressed. Although this subject has been the subject of numerous earlier studies, additional research is still required to fully understand the effectiveness, reliability, accuracy, and application of the present approaches to water quality management. In this research work, a comprehensive review has been conducted on water quality assessment using artificial techniques. It reviews 75 research works on water quality analysis. The data collected in each research work have been analyzed. Moreover, the type of water resource surface water, groundwater, drinking water as well has been analyzed. The parameters considered in each work are “Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Potential of Hydrogen (pH), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), chloride, hardness, alkalinity, nitrate–nitrite”. In addition, the Artificial Intelligence technique utilized for water quality analysis is also assessed. Finally, the research gaps identified in water quality detection are exhibited.

Behaviour, biochemical and histological responses of the freshwater mussels Unio ravoisieri exposed to wastewater from Wadi Guenniche (Northeastern Tunisia)

ABSTRACT Wastewater effluents increase contaminant levels in the aquatic environment, leading to various disruptive effects. In this study, responses of Unio ravoisieri transplanted into wastewater from Wadi Guenniche were monitored using filtration rate, oxidative stress, lipo-peroxidation, neurotoxicity and histopathological markers. The filtration rate was significantly increased by exposure to diluted wastewater, rising from 35.13 mg indiv−1 h−1 in the control to 63.49 mg indiv−1 h−1 in the mussels after 96 h of exposure. In contrast, this exposure significantly reduces catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and acetylcholinesterase activities in both organs. This decrease is dependent on the effluent concentration and time exposure. The malondihaldehyde content showed an increasing profile in both organs. It is only in the gills that this increase is significant for mussels transplanted in situ for 48 h. Contamination by wastewater causes histopathological changes in both organs, marked by infiltration, vacuolisation, secretion of lipofuscins and cell necrosis. The intensity of these lesions depends on the duration of exposure and the degree of pollution. The mean incidence of lesions increases depending on effluent concentration and exposure time in both organs. Our study contributes to the database on behavioural, biochemical and histopathological effects in mussels following the discharge of wastewater effluent into a freshwater ecosystem.

Investigating the chemical space coverage of multiple chromatographic and ionization methods using non-targeted analysis on surface and drinking water collected using passive sampling

Multiple non-targeted analysis tools were used to look for a broad range of possible chemical contaminants present in surface and drinking water using liquid chromatography separation and high-resolution mass spectrometry detection, including both quadrupole time of flight (Q-ToF) and Orbitrap instruments. Two chromatographic techniques were evaluated on an LC-Q-ToF with electrospray ionization in both positive and negative modes: (1) the traditionally used reverse phase C18 and (2) the hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) aimed to capture more polar contaminants that may be present in water. Multiple ionization modes were evaluated with an LC-Orbitrap, including electrospray (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), also in both positive and negative modes. A suspect screening library of over 1300 possible environmental contaminants, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, illicit drugs/drugs of abuse, and various anthropogenic markers was made with experimentally collected data with the LC-Q-ToF with both column types, with 227 chemicals being retained by the HILIC column. The non-targeted methods using multiple chromatographic and ionization modes were applied to environmental water samples collected with polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS), including surface water upstream and downstream from wastewater effluent discharge, and the downstream drinking water intake and treated drinking water for three distinct sampling events. For the LC-Q-ToF, 442 chemical features were detected on the C18 column and 91 with the HILIC column in the POCIS extracts, while 556 features were found on the Orbitrap workflow by ESI and 131 features detected by APCI. Over 100 chemicals were tentatively identified by suspect screening and database searching. The comprehensive and systematic evaluation of these methods serve as a step in characterizing the chemical space covered when utilizing different chromatography and ionization methods, or different instrument workflows on complex environmental mixtures.

Wastewater-effluent discharge and incomplete denitrification drive riverine CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions

Rivers are well-known sources of the greenhouse gasses (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These emissions from rivers can increase because of anthropogenic activities, such as agricultural fertilizer input or the discharge of treated wastewater, as these often contain elevated nutrient concentrations. Yet, the specific effects of wastewater effluent discharge on river GHG emissions remain poorly understood. Here, we studied two lowland rivers which both receive municipal wastewater effluent: river Linge and river Kromme Rijn. Dissolved concentrations and fluxes of CH4, N2O and CO2 were measured upstream, downstream and at discharge locations, alongside water column properties and sediment composition. Microbial communities in the sediment and water column were analysed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In general, observed GHG emissions from Linge and Kromme Rijn were comparable to eutrophic rivers in urban and agricultural environments. CO2 emissions peaked at most discharge locations, likely resulting from dissolved CO2 present in the effluent. CH4 emission was highest 2 km downstream, suggesting biological production by methanogenic activity stimulated by the effluents' carbon and nutrient supply. Dissolved N2O concentrations were strongly related to NO3− content of the water column which points towards incomplete riverine denitrification. Notably, methanogenic archaea were more abundant downstream of effluent discharge locations. However, overall microbial community composition remained relatively unaffected in both rivers. In conclusion, we demonstrate a clear link between wastewater effluent discharge and enhanced downstream GHG emission of two rivers. Mitigating the impact of wastewater effluent on receiving rivers will be crucial to reduce riverine GHG contributions.

Long-term impact of wastewater effluent discharge on groundwater: Identification of contaminant plume by geochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers' approach

Infiltration of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) into groundwater can be a source of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, that are not fully removed during the treatment processes. A multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers, is applied in the Vistrenque Aquifer (Gard, France) to assess the dispersion of such unintentional plumes and its potential implication on groundwater quality for CECs in a small catchment area. In this area, a point source of WWTP effluent causes contaminant infiltration and unintentional transfer to the aquifer. This strong impact of an urban effluent was revealed from the Br/Cl ratio, boron concentrations and δ11B isotopic signature of the groundwater in the direct vicinity of the infiltration point. With increasing distance from that point, dilution with groundwater rapidly attenuates the urban signal from these hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers. Nevertheless, a gadolinium anomaly, resulting from discharges of urban wastewater containing the contrast agents used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), highlights the presence of a wastewater plume further along the flow line, that comes with a series of organic molecules, including pharmaceutical residues. Monitoring persistent or reactive molecules along the plume provides a more detailed understanding of the transfer of CECs into groundwater bodies. This highlights the relevance of pharmaceutical compounds as co-tracers for WWTP plume delineation. The present multi-tracer approach for groundwater resource vulnerability towards CECs allows a more in-depth understanding of contaminant transfer and their fate in groundwater.

Urban wastewater management in Nepal: generation, treatment, engineering and policy perspectives

ABSTRACT Rapid urbanization has caused a worldwide increase in the discharge of wastewater effluent. Although Nepal has a noteworthy history of wastewater management, progress in this field has been hindered by persistent issues. These problems encompass insufficient sewer coverage, deficient treatment and sludge disposal facilities, inadequate treatment infrastructure, lack of coherent institutional frameworks, and a lack of comprehensive planning. This review provides a glimpse into Nepal's current urban wastewater landscape while also offering a concise historical overview of its wastewater management trends. The study gathered data, information from government organizations, as well as related research, review articles, and reports from 1999 to 2023. Our findings reveal that more than 85% of urban households in Nepal rely on onsite sanitation, with limited access to septage treatment facilities. The ratio of wastewater treatment to generation is disconcertingly low, further emphasized by the concentration of centralized treatment plants in the capital city. This low ratio underscores the inadequacy of the existing wastewater system and the novice approaches of the government, which contribute to the poor sewerage facilities in Nepal. This study unequivocally highlights the imperative need for functional and institutional hierarchy emphasizing local communities, substantial changes in resource allocation, governance practices, and technical infrastructure.

Mass quantification of nanoplastics at wastewater treatment plants by pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a crucial role in the collection and redistribution of plastic particles from both households and industries, contributing to their presence in the environment. Previous studies investigating the levels of plastics in WWTPs, and their removal rates have primarily focused on polymer type, size, shape, colour, and particle count, while comprehensive understanding of the mass concentration of plastic particles, particularly those <1 µm (nanoplastics), remains unclear and lacking. In this study, pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to simultaneously determine the mass concentration of nine selected polymers (i.e., polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), nylon 6, nylon 66, polyvinylchloride (PVC), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC)) below 1 µm in size across the treatment processes or stages of three WWTPs in Australia. All the targeted nanoplastics were detected at concentrations between 0.04 and 7.3 µg/L. Nylon 66 (0.2–7.3 µg/L), PE (0.1–6.6 µg/L), PP (0.1–4.5 µg/L), Nylon 6 (0.1–3.6 µg/L) and PET (0.1–2.2 µg/L), were the predominant polymers in the samples. The mass concentration of the total nanoplastics decreased from 27.7, 18 and 9.1 µg/L in the influent to 1, 1.4 and 0.8 µg/L in the effluent, with approximate removal rates of 96 %, 92 % and 91 % in plants A, B and C, respectively. Based on annual wastewater effluent discharge, it is estimated that approximately 24, 2 and 0.7 kg of nanoplastics are released into the environment per year for WWTPs A, B and C, respectively. This study investigated the mass concentrations and removal rates of nanoplastics with a size range of 0.01–1 µm in wastewater, providing important insight into the pollution levels and distribution patterns of nanoplastics in Australian WWTPs.

Impact of shale gas wastewater discharge on the trace elements of the receiving river in the Sichuan Basin, China.

The potential contamination of shale gas wastewater generated from hydraulic fracturing to water resources is of growing concern, yet minimum attention has been paid to the impact of shale gas wastewater on the trace elements of the receiving waters. In this study, we analyzed the levels of 50 trace elements of a river that receives effluent from a shale gas wastewater treatment facility in the Sichuan Basin, China. Sixteen trace elements were detected in the surface water sample from the effluent discharge site, all of which were of higher concentrations than the upstream background level. Among the 16 shale gas wastewater-related elements, Sr, Ba, and Li were of elevated levels in the downstream water samples (24.9-44.2%, 5.0-8.0 times, and 17.8-22.8 times higher than the upstream background level, respectively). Shale gas wastewater effluent may be related to the accumulation of Sr, Ba, Li, and Cs in riverbed sediments near and/or downstream of the effluent discharge site and may lead to elevated pollution level of Sr and Li in downstream sediments. The ecological risk of the riverbed sediments was of medium to high level, with Cd contributing to the most risk, while shale gas wastewater-related elements are of low potential risk throughout the river. Our results suggested that shale gas wastewater effluent discharge had limited impacts on the trace elements of the receiving river within two years.

Characterization of microbial communities in seven wetlands with different anthropogenic burden using Next Generation Sequencing in Bogotá, Colombia

Wetlands represent key ecosystems due to their remarkable biodiversity, ecological functions and multiple ecosystem services provided. In Colombia, there are 31,702 wetlands, 13 of which are in Bogotá, capital of the country. Despite the fundamental socioecological support of these aquatic ecosystems, a tremendous loss and degradation of these ecosystems has been observed due to anthropogenic perturbations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the status of seven Bogotá wetlands with variable anthropogenic interventions by measuring organoleptic, physicochemical, and microbiological parameters, using commercial kits, highly sensitive equipment, and next-generation sequencing of the 16S- and 18S-rRNA genes. Our findings describe the status of seven wetlands with different anthropogenic burden in Bogotá-Colombia where physicochemical and microbiology signals of contamination were observed. Additionally, some profiles in the composition of the microbial communities, together with certain physicochemical characteristics, may represent an insight into the environmental dynamics, where Beta Proteobacteria such as Malikia represent a potential keystone in aquatic ecosystems impacted by wastewater effluent discharges; the presence of nitrates and phosphates explain the abundance of bacteria capable of oxidizing these compounds, such as Polynucleobacter. Moreover, the presence of specific prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, such as Clostridium, Cryptococcus, Candida, and Naegleria, reported in one or more of the wetlands assessed here, could represent a possible pathogenic risk for human and animal health. This study performed a complete evaluation of seven Bogotá wetlands with different anthropogenic impacts for the first time, and our findings emphasize the importance of maintaining continuous monitoring of these water bodies given their remarkable ecological importance and potential spill-over of several pathogens to humans and animals.

Effect of floating plant growth rate on water quality performance of wetland in treating domestic sewage

A man-made system that mimics the function and structures of natural wetlands is called constructed wetlands. It is able to treat sewage water with low technology, low energy requirements, affordable and easy to maintain. However, how it works in tropical climates is still unknown and there is a need to figure out the sustainability of floating plants in treating domestic sewage. This study aims to investigate the pollutant removal efficiency of two selected floating plant species, water hyacinth and water lettuce, in treating domestic sewage. The growth rate of both plants will be examined for the best-recommended plants in the constructed wetland systems for domestic sewage treatment. The data was collected through a pilot-constructed wetland in the USM, Engineering Campus that is integrated with two species of floating plants: water hyacinth and water lettuce. The parameters studied were chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and ammoniacal nitrogen (AN). The findings reveal that the removal efficiency of water hyacinth is higher for COD and TSS at 40.96 % and 43.94 % respectively compared to Water Lettuce with 26.86 % for COD and 17.79 % for TSS. However, Water Lettuce has a slightly higher removal efficiency of NH3-N at 26.52 % compared to Water Hyacinth at 24.35 %. In terms of growth rate, Water Hyacinth is lost to water lettuce, but they have higher biomass to uptake nutrients with just a small increment of area coverage. Therefore, water hyacinth is favourable to implement in floating plant-constructed wetlands as it needs less maintenance than water lettuce to achieve discharge with standard A for TSS and COD and standard B for NH3-N based on Malaysia Wastewater Effluent Discharge Standards.

Assessing the environmental fate of rAAV in activated sludge and water: Implications for environmental risk assessments and GMO regulatory frameworks

During the past +20 years, recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors have emerged as the primary vehicle of choice for in vivo gene therapy. rAAV vectors are classified as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), therefore specific biosafety laws apply regarding their use. Environmental agencies participating in the review of clinical trial applications involving viral-based gene therapies (eg based on AAV) focus among other phenomena especially on shedding, a mechanism by which rAAV vectors exit a patient's body and enter the natural environment. For example, following patient use, shed viral particles excreted in urine and feces enter the wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) and subsequently may be released into the natural environment through wastewater effluent discharges. Based on basic molecular biology, it is generally assumed by the scientific community that shed rAAV particles will undergo degradation during the wastewater treatment process. However, despite their importance and increase in use during the last few decades, actual data to support our understanding of the environmental fate of shed rAAV vector particles is unavailable. Data to support this assumption would greatly enhance our knowledge and understanding of degradation kinetics associated with rAAV in the environment. Such data would also provide strong scientific support for changes in current legislation regarding the medicinal use of GMOs. Therefore, the goal of this research was to conduct laboratory experiments to assess the actual environmental fate of rAAV virions.In this study the stability of 4 different rAAV vectors (based on wildtype (wt) AAV serotypes 2,3,6,9) was assessed during incubation in activated sludge (containing live microorganisms). This setting corresponds to conditions as encountered in WWTFs, and has been used in order to assess rAAV fate under environmentally relevant conditions, to gain a better understanding of the general environmental risk posed by shed rAAV particles. The amount of detectable virions in the supernatant, as measured by sensitive and specific qPCR, rapidly decreased within hours and continued to decline, reaching the lower limit of quantitation prior to or by study termination on day 7. Furthermore, a half-life of approximately 7 days for rAAV virions was determined under abiotic conditions, during a room temperature incubation experiment of rAAV vectors in water in the absence of any microbiota or sludge.The findings from this study provide the first insight of its kind into the actual environmental fate of shed rAAV particles, and help the community to better understand the potential impact of rAAVs on the environment. It has become evident now that shed particles are not equipped to remain stable and/or soluble once entering a typical WWTF and therefore do not pose a threat to the natural environment. These findings support a data-driven approach towards a simplified, risk-based regulation of medicinal GMOs in the EU and other regions.

Unlocking the Potential of N-Doped SnO2 for Sustainable Photocatalytic Degradation of Carcinogenic Dyes

Environmental adulteration is an emerging concern due to the discharge of wastewater effluents from several sources. Several carcinogenic dyes are the major contaminants in these water bodies. These could cause long-lasting and detrimental effects to humans as well as aquatic ecosystems. For efficient degradation of such dyes, the exploration of nanotechnology has demonstrated huge potential. Herein, the degradation of dyes (MB, CV, and MO) has been carried out photocatalytically using N-doped SnO2 nanoparticles (N:SnO2 NPs) as well as in presence of a sacrificial agent, EDTA. These NPs were synthesized at an ambient temperature. Different characterization techniques were used throughout the analysis of the synthesized NPs. The PXRD analysis reveals formation of single-phase rutile structure with tetragonal symmetry. Using the Scherrer formula, the size of the NPs was found to be less than 5 nm, exhibiting increases in size with N doping. Further, morphological analysis through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examined the existence of highly agglomerated, spherical NPs. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results depict the thermal stability of the synthesized NPs up to a temperature of 800 °C. These synthesized N:SnO2 NPs exhibit potent efficiency for the photocatalytic degradation of MB, MO, and CV dyes with an efficiency of 93%, 83%, and 73% degradation, respectively, under UV light irradiation. Additionally, the effect of the sacrificial agent, EDTA, was observed on the degradation process and resulted in a degradation of ~90% MB dye, 88% CV dye, and 86% MO dye within 15 min of UV light irradiation.

REDUCTION OF COD FROM REACTIVE DYE WASTE WATER

Due to the scarcity of water resources, it is crucial to safeguard public health and well-being. One way to achieve this is by enforcing stringent regulations on the discharge of wastewater effluents to minimize the introduction of harmful substances into water bodies. Furthermore, there is a growing trend to reduce total solids (TS) in wastewater and repurpose them for industrial applications. The treatment of wastewater to a high standard has expanded the potential uses while reducing negative impacts on freshwater ecosystems. Currently, the main environmental issue in wastewater treatment is related to dye effluents. This is because the textile industry consumes a substantial amount of water, resulting in wastewater that contains unused colours and their constituents. Dye-containing wastewater produced by the textile sector is extremely toxic and poses severe challenges for wastewater treatment facilities. Textile effluents contain high levels of colour, TDS, and hazardous metals, which have reduced the ability of contaminants to self-degrade in wastewater. Numerous techniques, such as chemical oxidation, coagulation and adsorption processes, as well as biological processes, are employed to remove dye using traditional methods, but none of these are sufficient on their own to remove dye from wastewater. For instance, biological processes are unsuitable for decolourization of dyes since the majority of the colours are inorganic and harmful to the process microorganisms. Activated carbon is effective for treating soluble colours, while coagulation is better suited for insoluble dyes but not for soluble ones. Due to the product of their degradation, most dyes in particular reactive dyes cause serious environmental problems. Due to the complicated structure and refractory nature of dyes, the degradation of colours from textile effluent is exceedingly hard. Wastewater produced in textile manufacturing plants may contain both natural and synthetic pollutants, the composition of which depends on the production techniques employed. Several parameters are commonly used to evaluate the characteristics of textile wastewater, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Suspended Solids (SS), Dissolved Solids (DS), pH, Chloride, Sodium, and others. The quality of textile wastewater is determined by these parameters, and it is important to take them into account when selecting appropriate treatment methods to ensure that the environment is not adversely impacted.

A baseline characterization of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration and releases in Nova Scotia, Canada

Three industrial facilities (a kraft pulp mill, a tire manufacturing, and a coal-fired power generation plant), have operated in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada for more than 50 years. The local population, including an Indigenous community, has raised concerns for several decades about the environmental and human health impacts of local air and effluent pollution. Numerous studies have reported negative air, water, sediment, and ecological and human health impacts in the region. However, previous studies mainly focused on wastewater effluent discharge from the kraft pulp mill, with only a few studies focused on air pollution. These limited air pollution studies pointed out the pulp mill as the primarily responsible for local emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), but with high levels of uncertainty. This study analyzed hourly and daily PM2.5 concentrations measured at an air quality monitoring station in Pictou (part of the National Air Pollution Surveillance [NAPS] network) between 2004 and 2021. For events of high PM2.5 concentrations (which occurred predominantly in April and May in 2014 and 2015), air masses were tracked using the HYSPLIT model to evaluate if long-range transboundary pollution could have contributed to PM2.5 concentration. Results suggest that the pulp mill was likely the primary source of high PM2.5 concentrations recorded at the Pictou NAPS station. Measured PM2.5 concentrations only met the desirable air quality management concentrations after the pulp mill installed a recovery boiler electrostatic precipitator in October 2015 to reduce PM2.5 emissions.

Assessing the Mass Concentration of Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Wastewater Treatment Plants by Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

The level of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has been well evaluated by the particle number, while the mass concentration of MPs and especially nanoplastics (NPs) remains unclear. In this study, pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to determine the mass concentrations of MPs and NPs with different size ranges (0.01-1, 1-50, and 50-1000 μm) across the whole treatment schemes in two WWTPs. The mass concentrations of total MPs and NPs decreased from 26.23 and 11.28 μg/L in the influent to 1.75 and 0.71 μg/L in the effluent, with removal rates of 93.3 and 93.7% in plants A and B, respectively. The proportions of NPs (0.01-1 μm) were 12.0-17.9 and 5.6-19.5% in plants A and B, respectively, and the removal efficiency of NPs was lower than that of MPs (>1 μm). Based on annual wastewater effluent discharge, it is estimated that about 0.321 and 0.052 tons of MPs and NPs were released into the river each year. Overall, this study investigated the mass concentration of MPs and NPs with a wide size range of 0.01-1000 μm in wastewater, which provided valuable information regarding the pollution level and distribution characteristics of MPs, especially NPs, in WWTPs.

Acute Toxicity of a Marine Emerging Pollutant (Promethazine Hydrochloride) on Artemia sp.

Recently, there has been a worrying increase in the pollution of the aquatic ecosystem caused by emerging contaminants (ECs) detected in wastewater effluent discharges. Although traces of ECs in waters have been found in low concentrations, it leads to negative effects for nontarget organisms. Antihistamines are a class of drugs largely used, whose metabolites are widespread in the aquatic ecosystem. The aim of the study was to evaluate the short-term effects of promethazine hydrochloride on nauplii of Artemia sp. A high percentage of mortality and morphological alterations were found. The results suggest a possible correlation between exposure to antihistamine and an acceleration of larval development.

Seasonal prevalence of potentially infectious enteric viruses in surface waters below treated wastewater discharge.

Enteric viruses are widely distributed in the natural water environment. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of potentially infectious adenoviruses (AdV) and rotaviruses (RoV) in surface water near treated wastewater discharge. Water samples were collected from surface water below the treated wastewater effluent discharge located near a wastewater treatment plant receiving sewage from an urban area. Water samples were concentrated by ultrafiltration and treated with propidium monoazide dye, followed with v-qPCR/v-RT-qPCR analysis. Simultaneously, the temperature and pH of the collected samples were measured to check the influence of these parameters on the concentrations of potentially infectious viruses. The average concentrations of potentially infectious AdV and RoV particles in collected samples ranged between log10 1.86 ÷ 3.94 gc/L and log10 2.39 ÷ 3.82 gc/L in the winter season, and between log10 2.18 ÷ 3.59 gc/L and log10 1.85 ÷ 2.10 gc/L in the summer season, respectively. In general, AdVs were detected more often than RoVs, while RoV-positive samples were more frequent in the winter than in the summer season (Chi2: p = 0.028; Fisher's Exact test p = 0.033). Negative correlations between log10 concentration of viral particles and temperature and pH for both viruses were observed. The presence of potentially infectious AdVs and RoVs in the surface waters may constitute a health risk for the local population. Application of v-PCR-based methods and considering AdV as a viral contamination indicator should be introduced into virological water quality monitoring for estimations of public health risks.

Greenhouse gas emissions from municipal wastewater treatment facilities in China from 2006 to 2019

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) alleviate water pollution but also induce resource consumption and environmental impacts especially greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Mitigating GHG emissions of WWTPs can contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in China. But there is still a lack of a high-resolution and time-series GHG emission inventories of WWTPs in China. In this study, we construct a firm-level emission inventory of WWTPs for CH4, N2O and CO2 emissions from different wastewater treatment processes, energy consumption and effluent discharge for the time-period from 2006 to 2019. We aim to develop a transparent, verifiable and comparable WWTP GHG emission inventory to support GHG mitigation of WWTPs in China.

Holistic approach to chemical and microbiological quality of aquatic ecosystems impacted by wastewater effluent discharges

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) collect wastewater from various sources and use different treatment processes to reduce the load of pollutants in the environment. Since the removal of many chemical pollutants and bacteria by WWTPs is incomplete, they constitute a potential source of contaminants. The continuous release of contaminants through WWTP effluents can compromise the health of the aquatic ecosystems, even if they occur at very low concentrations. The main objective of this work was to characterize, over a period of four months, the treatment steps starting from income to the effluent and 5 km downstream to the receiving river. In this context, the efficiency removal of chemical pollutants (e.g. hormones and pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics) and bacteria was assessed in a WWTP case study by using a holistic approach. It embraces different chemical and biological-based methods, such as pharmaceutical analysis by HPLC-MSMS, growth rate inhibition in algae, ligand binding estrogen receptor assay, microbial community study by 16S and shotgun sequencing along with relative quantification of resistance genes by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Although both, chemical and biological-based methods showed a significant reduction of the pollutant burden in effluent and surface waters compared to the influent of the WWTP, no complete removal of pollutants, pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes was observed.

Dissolved rubidium to strontium ratio as a conservative tracer for wastewater effluent-sourced contaminant inputs near a major urban wastewater treatment plant

Municipal wastewater (MWW) effluent discharges can introduce contaminants to receiving waters which may have adverse impacts on local ecosystems and human health. Conservative chemical constituents specific to the MWW effluent stream can be used to quantify and trace wastewater effluent-sourced contaminant inputs. Gadolinium (Gd), a rare earth element used as a contrasting agent in medical magnetic resonance imaging, can be found in urban MWW streams. Dissolved anthropogenic Gd has been shown to be an indicator and potential conservative tracer for MWW effluent in receiving waters. Like other known MWW tracers, it can be difficult and expensive to measure. Dissolved rubidium (Rb) to strontium (Sr) ratio enrichment in biological materials such as blood and urine can lead to enriched Rb/Sr values in MWW effluent relative to natural waters. This ratio is relatively easy and inexpensive to measure and represents a promising additional indicator for MWW effluent in receiving waters in urbanized freshwater systems. In July 2015 and 2016 surface water samples were collected from sites in the tidal-fresh Potomac River in the vicinity of the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (BPAWWTP) outfall near Washington, DC USA along with treated MWW effluent samples from the BPAWWTP. Dissolved Rb/Sr ratios were measured in these waters and compared to dissolved Gd concentrations in order to demonstrate the potential of the dissolved Rb/Sr ratio as a conservative indicator for MWW effluent. Results suggest the dissolved Rb/Sr ratio represents a simple and cost-effective indicator and conservative tracer for MWW effluent. It can be used with, or in place of, other proven tracers to investigate wastewater impacts in highly-urbanized, anthropogenically-impacted freshwater systems like the tidal fresh Potomac River and perhaps in a wider range of geologic settings than previously thought. A case study is presented as an example to demonstrate the potential of using dissolved Rb/Sr ratios to trace MWW-sourced nutrient inputs from a major WWTP like BPAWWTP to the receiving waters of tidal-fresh Potomac River.
