Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are lipophilic environmental toxicants. Epidemiological studies have established a link between PCBs and both metabolic syndrome and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Multiple studies have reported that exposure to both PCB156 and PCB126 among the 12 dioxin-like PCBs leads to the development of NAFLD. However, studies to elucidate whether PCB169 induces the development of NAFLD by constructing in vivo models have not been reported. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of exposure to PCB169 (5 mg/kg-bw) on hepatic lipid metabolism in C57BL/6 mice from control diet and high-fat diet cohorts. The results showed that PCB169 exposure reduced body weight and intraperitoneal fat mass in mice on the control diet, but the liver lipid levels were significantly increased, exacerbating NAFLD in mice on a high-fat diet. Through transcriptomics studies, it was found that PCB169 exposure induced significant up-regulation of Pparγ, Fasn, and Aacs genes involved in hepatic lipogenesis, as well as remarkable up-regulation of Hmgcr, Lss, and Sqle genes involved in cholesterol synthesis. Additionally, there was notable down-regulation of Pparα and Cpt1 genes involved in lipid β-oxidation, leading to abnormal lipid accumulation in the liver. In addition, we found that PCB169 exposure significantly activated the Arachidonic acid metabolism, PPAR signaling pathway, Metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, and Retinol metabolism pathways, and so on. Our study suggests that PCB169 can modify gene expression related to lipid metabolism, augument lipid accumulation in the liver, and further contribute to the development of NAFLD, thereby revealing the detrimental effects associated with PCB exposure on animal growth and metabolism.

Association between Prenatal Dietary Toxicants and Infant Neurodevelopment: The Role of Fish.

More research is needed to understand how the maternal consumption of fish and fish-borne toxicants impacts infant neurodevelopment. The present analysis was conducted over 460 mother-infant pairs within the ECLIPSES study. Dietary intake of metals and persistent organic pollutants from fish (including white fish, blue fish, and seafood) was estimated in pregnant women. The infants underwent cognitive, language, and motor function assessments using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III at the 40-day postpartum. Associations between dietary toxicants and outcomes were assessed using multivariable linear regression models. Estimated prenatal exposure to fish-borne toxicants, such as arsenic, inorganic arsenic, methylmercury, dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs), and non-DL-PCBs, was associated with poorer language functions in infants, whereas no significant associations were found with motor or cognitive functions. Maternal fish consumption exceeding the Spanish recommendation of no more than 71 g per day was linked to these adverse effects on language abilities without affecting motor or cognitive development. This highlights the importance of vigilant monitoring of environmental toxicants and the provision of dietary guidance for pregnant women, with potential implications for public health and child development.

Serum concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls and the risk of type 2 diabetes: a 10-year follow-up historical cohort study

This study investigated the association between serum concentrations of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and the risk of type 2 diabetes within the general population. A ten-year follow-up historical cohort study was conducted during 2009–2019 as part of the Bushehr MONICA cohort study in Iran. Of 893 non-diabetes participants at base line, 181 individuals were included in the study. The concentration of nine PCB congeners was measured in individuals’ serum samples at baseline, and the risk of type 2 diabetes was determined based on fasting blood sugar at the end of follow-up. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the study outcomes after adjusting for covariates. This study included 59 diabetes individuals (32.6%; mean [SD] age: 58.64 [8.05]) and 122 non-diabetes individuals (67.4%; mean [SD] age: 52.75 [8.68]). Multivariable analysis revealed that a one-tertile increase (increasing from 33rd centile to 67th centile) in Σ non-dioxin-like-PCBs (OR 2.749, 95% CI 1.066–7.089), Σ dioxin-like-PCBs (OR 4.842, 95% CI 1.911–12.269), and Σ PCBs (OR 2.887, 95% CI 1.120–7.441) significantly associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The strongest association was obtained for dioxin-like PCBs. The results highlight a significant correlation between PCB exposure and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The evidence suggests that additional epidemiological studies are necessary to clarify the link between PCBs and diabetes.

A novel, low-cost, and efficient separation strategy based on S-doped C3N4 for the analysis of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) are widespread and highly toxic persistent organic pollutants with similar chemical structure. The popular process for the separation of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in one sample often relies on imported and expensive activated carbon, giving rise to an urgent need of inexpensive and efficient separation method. Herein, a novel, simple, and low-cost separation strategy based on sulfur-doped carbon nitride (S-C3N4) is reported. The S-C3N4 material was synthesized through simple thermal annealing with precursor of thiocyanuric acid. After recovery experiments, the optimal addition ratio of S-C3N4 was determined to be 40% mixed with silica gel. The recoveries for PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs congeners are 32% - 105% and 60% - 70% respectively, which not only meets USEPA and Chinese standards but also shows comparable performance to activated carbon. Moreover, the proposed S-C3N4 strategy exhibits excellent performance for the analysis of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in real complex samples (sediment and fish liver) in terms of detected concentrations and toxic equivalents. Overall, this study puts forward a new and low-cost avenue for the separation of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, which is of remarkable meaning for motivating the development of detection techniques and domestic equipment for dioxins and other pollutants in the environment.

Human biomonitoring of dioxins, furans, and non-ortho dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in blood plasma from Old Crow, Yukon, Canada (2019)

Dioxins, furans, and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of persistent and toxic chemicals that are known to have human health effects at low levels. These chemicals have been produced for commercial use (PCBs) or unintentionally as by-products of industry or natural processes (PCBs, dioxins, and furans). Additionally, dioxin-like PCBs were formerly used in electrical applications before being banned internationally (2004). These chemicals are widely dispersed in the environment as they can contaminate air and travel hundreds to thousands of kilometers before depositing on land or water, thereafter, potentially entering food chains. Community concerns surrounding the safety of traditional foods prompted a human biomonitoring project in Old Crow, Yukon Territory (YT), Canada (2019). Through collaborative community engagement, dioxins and like compounds were identified as a priority for exposure assessment from biobanked samples.In 2022, biobanked plasma samples (n = 54) collected in Old Crow were used to measure exposures to seven dioxins, ten furans, and four dioxin-like PCBs. 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDD, 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, OCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF, 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDF, PCB 126, and PCB 169 were detected in at least 50 % of samples. Among these analytes, the only congener at elevated levels was PCB 169, which was approximately ∼2-fold higher than the general population of Canada. No significant sex-based or body mass index (BMI) differences in biomarker concentrations were observed. Generally, the concentrations of the detected congeners increased with age, except for 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD.For the first time, this research measures dioxin and like-compound exposures in Old Crow, advancing the information available on chemical exposures in the Arctic. Further research could be directed towards the investigation of PCB 169 exposure sources and temporal monitoring of exposures and determinants.

Evaluating contamination of seafood purchased from U.S. retail stores by persistent environmental pollutants, pesticides and veterinary drugs

Studies have reported health risks associated with seafood contamination, but few data exist on levels in commercially available seafood in the US. To better understand, the magnitude of foodborne exposure and identify vulnerable populations in the US, we measured concentrations of veterinary drugs, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs], polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs] and polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs]), and legacy and current-use pesticides in 46 seafood samples purchased from retail outlets. Measured levels were used to estimate risk based on available maximum residue limits (MRLs) and toxic equivalence (TEQ) factors for analytes. Only seventeen of the 445 analytes were detected, at low substance frequencies. However, half of the samples tested positive for one or more analyte, with total concentrations ranging from below the limit of detection (LOD) to as high as 156 µg/kg wet weight. Based on the risk assessment for individual pesticides and veterinary drugs, the hazard quotients (HQ) were all <1, indicating no risk. However, for the sum of PCB126 and PCB167, two dioxin-like PCBs detected in our samples, the TEQ was nearly two orders of magnitude higher than the WHO limits in one catfish sample. Moreover, vulnerable groups with higher rates of consumption of specific fish types may face higher risks.

Distribution of PCDD/Fs and PCBs at different locations in a circulating fluidised bed municipal solid waste incinerator.

This study investigates a circulating fluidised bed (CFB) incineration plant to examine the concentrations and fingerprints of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and biphenyls (PCBs) at five locations downstream of the post-combustion zone. Sampling encompassed both flue gas and ash, spanning from the high-temperature superheater to the outlet of the baghouse filter, thus covering a wide range of flue gas temperatures. The analysis reveals a continuous increase in PCDD/F and PCB concentrations in the flue gas from the superheater to the inlet of the air pollution control system (APCS). The maximum concentrations observed were 75.8ng/Nm3 for PCDDs, 219ng/Nm3 for PCDFs, and 763ng/Nm3 for PCBs. These values represent 9.14, 11.5, and 6.37 times their respective concentrations at the outlet of the high-temperature superheater. Concurrently, the levels of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) in the ash steadily increased along the cooling path of the flue gas within the plant. Comparing dl-PCBs to the total amount of 209 PCB congeners, it was evident that dl-PCBs exhibited a trend more akin to that of PCDD/Fs. A robust linear correlation was observed between dl-PCBs and PCDD/Fs (R2 = 0.99, p < 0.001), surpassing that between PCBs and PCDD/Fs (R2 = 0.92, p < 0.01), suggesting that dl-PCBs share closer formation pathways with PCDD/Fs. Additionally, elemental composition analysis of fly ash samples aimed to explore potential links between fly ash characteristics and PCDD/F and PCB formation. The Cl/S ratio increased from 1.58 to 5.13 with decreasing flue gas temperature. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to visualise the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the flue gas alongside elemental contents in the fly ash. With the exception of PCBs in ash, all other PCDD/Fs and PCBs in fly ash exhibited positive correlations with both carbon (C) and chlorine (Cl). Furthermore, a positive relationship between C/Cl and PCDD/Fs-PCBs in fly ash implies that fly ash serves as the primary reaction surface for dioxin generation during low-temperature heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

Health risk assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls exposure from inland rivers sediments in Warri-South, Warri, Delta State

Abstract The health risk of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exposure from Ugbuwangue, Ugbori and Edjeba rivers sediments in Warri-South, Warri, Delta State was investigated. Nine sediment samples were collected; three samples each along the course of the different rivers. The sediment samples were Soxhlet extracted with acetone/dichloromethane/nhexane (1:1:1 v/v). A total of 28 PCBs were quantified using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry detector. The concentration of the 28 PCBs ranges from 178.76-1398.29 ng g−1 for Ugbuwangue river, 224.81-685.19 ng g-1 for Ugbori river and 539.33-7858.3 ng g−1 for Edjeba river. The concentration of 12 PCBs were recorded for dioxin-like PCBs ranged from 0.08-401.52 ng g−1 (Ugbuwangue river 0.13 to 223.11 ng g−1, Ugbori river 0.08 to 153.39 ng g−1 and Edjeba river 0.32 to 401.52 ng g−1), while the concentration of 16 non-dioxin-like PCBs were recorded ranging from 0.13-4245.71 ng g−1 (Ugbuwangue river 0.18 to 386.47 ng g−1, Ugbori river 0.13 to 111.98 ng g−1 and Edjeba river 0.31 to 4245.71 ng g−1). The ecological risks of the nine sediment samples were investigated and it ranges from 25.52 – 1122.616 with Edjeba river sediment having the highest ecological risk while Ugbuwangue river sediment has the least ecological risk.

Concentration and sources of persistent organic pollutants within the vicinity of a scrap-iron smelting plant: Seasonal pattern and health risk assessment

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of ubiquitous and significant synthetic organic chemicals that pose deleterious threats to the environment and human health. This study examined the concentration, indoor-outdoor and seasonal change, sources, and health effects of PCBs in particulate-bound dust near a scrap iron recycling plant. PCBs levels were determined in samples using gas chromatograph mass spectrometer. The results indicated that 5 Cl atoms PCB constituted the majority of PCBs (41% overall), contributing 43% during the rainy season and 39% during the dry season. Dioxin-like PCBs (DLPCBs) contributed 38% during the rainy season and 33% during the dry season. In addition, DLPCB accounted for 26% and 40% of indoor and outdoor PCB emissions, respectively. Iron and steel production were identified as the highest identified contributing sources, accounting for 76% of PCB emissions in the rainy season, while plastic combustion had the highest contribution in the dry season, accounting for 44% of PCB emissions. Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk assessment showed ingestion as the main exposure pathway for children and adults during the two seasons (74.42% and 58.24%, respectively), followed by dermal exposure, while inhalation had the least contribution. A multifaced approach involving relevant agencies, the industry, and the community is required to reduce exposure.

Persistent Halogenated Organic Pollutants in Deep-Water-Deposited Particulates from South China Sea.

POP data are limited in the marine environment; thus, this study aimed to investigate background persistent organic pollutant (POP) levels in oceanic deep-water-deposited particulates in the South China Sea (SCS). Six POPs, including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs), polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs), and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), were investigated in eight pooled samples from the SCS from 20 September 2013 to 23 March 2014 and 15 April 2014 to 24 October 2014 at depths of 2000 m and 3500 m. PBDEs were the most predominant compounds, with the highest mean Σ14PBDE of 125 ± 114 ng/g dry weight (d.w.), followed by Σ17PCDD/F, Σ12PBDD/F, and Σ12DL-PCB (275 ± 1930, 253 ± 216, and 116 ± 166 pg/g d.w., respectively). Most PBDD/F, PBB, and PCDE congeners were below the detection limits. PCDDs had the highest toxic equivalency (TEQ), followed by PBDDs and DL-PCBs. Among the six POPs, PBDEs were the major components of the marine-deposited particles, regarding both concentrations and mass fluxes. Compared to 3500 m, PBDE levels were higher at a depth of 2000 m. PBDE mass fluxes were 20.9 and 14.2 ng/m2/day or 68.2 and 75.9 ng/m2/year at deep-water 2000 and 3500 m, respectively. This study first investigated POP levels in oceanic deep-water-deposited particles from existing global data.

Toxicity and risk evaluation of polychlorinated biphenyls in River Otamiri, Imo State

Polychlorinated biphenyls are a family of dangerous, long-lasting chemicals that can be detrimental to human health and also have a significant propensity to build up in the environment as organic pollutants. In this regard, the toxicity, carcinogenic, and non-carcinogenic health risks of PCBs in the surface water and sediment of the River Otamiri in Imo State were investigated. This study collected surface water and sediment samples from the River Otamiri at four sampling points. An Agilent 7890A gas chromatograph connected to an Agilent 5975C mass selective detector was used to conduct the PCB analysis. Twenty-eight PCB congeners were detected in the water and sediment samples. Also, the PCB congeners’ descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) in the studied matrices were reported. The total levels of PCBs in the surface water and sediment ranged from 622.87 − 935.84 ng L−1 and 1621.03 − 2748.17 µg kg−1 respectively. The concentration of PCB congeners in the studied matrices revealed that PCB-118 had the highest concentration, while the lowest concentration was recorded in PCB-157. The toxicity equivalent quotient (TEQ) was used to assess the harmful effect of dioxin-like PCBs in the studied matrices. High TEQs beyond the World Health Organization's (WHO) acceptable limit were observed for PCB-126 and PCB-169 congeners in both surface water and sediments.This raises the possibility of an ecosystem risk. Furthermore, the lifetime cancer risk values of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) in surface water and sediments were within the tolerable risk limit, whereas the hazard quotient values exceeded the recommended tolerable limit stipulated by the WHO. It is critical to notice that PCB-126 contributions had a major impact on the high hazard index values. Additionally, the possibility of non-cancer risks in children is significantly higher than that of adults because of their lower body mass and pickier habits. This indicates that children are more susceptible to the non-carcinogenic effect of DL-PCBs in the studied matrices. In conclusion, awareness programs and environmental policies are required to ensure the safety of the river from organic pollutants.

Levels and species-specific organochlorine accumulation in three shark species from the western Gulf of California with different life history traits

Organochlorine compounds (OCs), such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), remain ubiquitous in marine ecosystems despite their prohibition or restriction, posing a risk to marine wildlife and humans. Their accumulation in liver tissue and potential toxicity in three exploited shark species (the scalloped hammerhead, Sphyrna lewini; the Pacific sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon longurio; and the Pacific angel shark, Squatina californica) with different physiological and ecological features from the western Gulf of California (GC) were investigated. Forty of the 47 OCs analyzed were identified, evidencing a greater agricultural than industrial influence considering the high DDTs/PCBs ratios. The DDT group was the main contributor to ∑OCs in the three species, while hexa- and hepta-CBs dominated the PCB profiles. S. lewini (juveniles) and R. longurio (juveniles and adults) had similar and significantly (p < 0.05) higher ∑OCP concentrations than S. californica (juveniles and adults), which is attributed to their migration to other polluted regions of the gulf. The three species' ∑PCB levels (lipid weight) were comparable and considered low in comparison to those documented in prior studies conducted worldwide. No intraspecific differences were observed when comparing by sex, but OC concentrations were higher in larger individuals. S. lewini and R. longurio showed different OC bioaccumulation trends against size, while no relationship between size and ∑OC concentrations was observed in S. californica. All shark species' toxic equivalents (TEQs) were calculated from dioxin-like PCB concentrations and were far below the established TEQ fish thresholds. However, future research is needed regarding the possible PCB and OCP effects in elasmobranchs. This study provides the basis for monitoring organic contaminants in predatory sharks from the western GC. It also highlights the importance of further research on unintentionally produced organochlorine environmental levels and sources.

Estimation of dietary intake of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls from the Thai total diet study in 2019

Dietary intakes of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) were assessed in the Thai Total Diet Study (TDS) in 2019. Food samples including portable water (n = 1048) were collected from four regions of Thailand to represent a whole diet of Thai population, prepared as consumed and analyzed. To estimate the dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs, the concentrations in 18 food groups were combined with the respective food consumption from the national consumption data of Thailand and with a mean body weight of 57.57 kg for Thai population aged ≥ 3 years. The dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs and ∑PCDD/Fs/DL-PCBs were estimated to be 8.09, 4.93 and 13.02 pg WHO2005-TEQ kg−1 body weight month−1, respectively (upper bound). The major contributors to the total dietary intake were marine animals, followed by milk and milk products, freshwater animals, pork and pork products, and eggs, corresponding to 26, 22, 21, 10 and 9%, respectively. In comparison to health-based guidance value (HBGV), the intake of ∑PCDD/Fs/DL-PCBs (upper bound) was equal to 19% of the provisional tolerable monthly intake set by JECFA in 2001. Moreover, a comparison with other HBGVs was additionally presented and discussed.

Non-invasive biomonitoring of infant exposure to environmental organic pollutants in north-western Spain based on hair analysis. Identification of potential sources

Recent years have seen growing interest in hair sample analysis to detect organic pollutants (OPs). This biological matrix can be analysed non-invasively for biomonitoring of OPs over a wide exposure window. Obtaining hair sample amounts that meet the needs of the analytical methodology required for the determination of the POs of interest can be challenging, especially in infants. As a result, studies assessing organic pollutants in infant hair have been very scarce. We quantified levels of about 60 OPs, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs), in 110 hair samples from a patient cohort (60 mothers and 50 infants) from Santiago de Compostela (north-western Spain). For each participant we examined relationship between OP levels and corresponding epidemiological parameters using correlations, principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis, and Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). For many OPs we observed significant correlations with place of residence, parity, and maternal age, as well as pet ownership. Evaluation of dietary habits showed significant associations between levels some OPs and the consumption of fish, molluscs, and cereal. There were significant associations between chlorpyrifos and deltamethrin levels and infant birth characteristics such as birthweight and head circumference. Relations between OP levels in the hair of mothers and their infants were also examined, revealing common sources of exposure for dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DLPCBs), non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDLPCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Levels of fluoranthene (F), pyrene (P), endrin, and some PBDEs in maternal hair were significantly correlated with those in infant hair. Our findings identified common sources of exposure to OPs of distinct chemical classes.

OR06-06 Association Between Mixed Dioxin Exposure And Thyroid Functions In U.S. Adults: A Comparison Of Three Statistical Models

Background: Previous studies of the relationship between dioxin exposure and thyroid function have usually been based on multi-chemical linear models and results have been inconsistent. However, complex nonlinear relationships and interactions between mixed dioxin exposures and thyroid function have not been studied. We applied three different statistical models to assess the joint effect of 20 dioxins on thyroid function. Methods: A total of 6 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), 10 polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), 4 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and serum TSH were measured in the serum of U.S. adults by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2010. We fitted multivariable logistic regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models to estimate the association of individual and mixed dioxin exposures with high TSH. Results: Among the 2818 individuals included in our analysis, 1.99% had TSH &amp;gt;5.6 uIU/mL. In the multivariable logistic regression established for each single dioxin, 1,2,3,7,8-pncdd, 1,2,3,4,7,8-hxcdd, 1,2,3,6,7,8-hxcdd, 1,2,3,7,8,9-hxcdd, 1,2,3,4,7,8-Hexachlorofuran, 1,2,3,6,7,8-Hexachlorofuran, 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4',5-Pentachlorobiphenyl, and 2,3,7,8-Tetrachloro-p-dioxin were positively associated with high TSH, and 3,4,4',5-Tetrachlorobiphenyl was negatively associated with high TSH. In the WQS regression model, the WQS index was significantly associated (OR (95% CI): 2.03 (1.06, 3.88)) with high TSH, and 1,2,3,7,8-pncdd (weighted at 0.24) made the largest contribution. In the BKMR analysis, a significant positive association was found between mixed dioxin exposure and high TSH when all dioxins were at their 55 to 70th percentile, compared to their 50th percentile. TSH was lower when all dioxins were at their 30th to 45th percentile, compared to their 50th percentile. Conclusion: By comparing the three statistical models, we concluded that the whole-body burden of 20 dioxins was significantly positively associated with high TSH. 1,2,3,7,8-pncdd played the most important roles in hypothyroidism. Spatial distribution, source identification, and risk assessment of polychlorinated organic pollutants (PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs) in the sediments of the largest urban water supply area (Iznik lake) in the Marmara region, Bursa, Türkiye

Iznik lake is the biggest lake in the Marmara region, which is the most industrialized and populated area of Türkiye. The lake is one of Türkiye's most important water supply areas and is located nearby the Iznik district of Bursa, with a population of about 45,000. It is being used for irrigation and fishery production, but not for drinking water. In this paper, the distribution, pollution source, and risk assessment of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) in the surface sediments of Iznik lake and streams (both flowing to and flowing from the lake) were investigated. Six surface sediments collected from the lake and four surface sediments collected from the streams were analyzed in high-resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HR/GC–MS) system in accordance with EPA 1613 and EPA 1668 methods. The concentration ranges of the ∑PCDD/Fs is 21.4 pg/g d.w. (inside the lake (IZ-6)) – 54.5 pg/g d.w. (Gülayağı stream (IZ-8)) and ∑DL-PCBs is 13.5 pg/g d.w. (inside the lake (IZ-3)) – 46.3 pg/g d.w. (Olukdere (IZ-7)) respectively, with 2.68 pg TEQ/g d.w. on average. The results showed that the high chlorinated (Hepta – Octa CDD/Fs) dioxins/furans and pentachlorinated PCBs (PCB 118 and 105) are dominant in the sediments. A detailed assessment of PCDD/F congener profiles observed in the lake sediments speculated that the wastewater discharges to the lake could be the main pollution source, while other sources such as open burning activities, runoff of pesticide residues from agricultural areas and atmospheric deposition may have some contribution also. The health risk assessment performed for polluted sediment demonstrated that, in the worst case, dioxin-like (PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs) concentration was a total intake of 0.37 pg TEQ/kg body weight/day, no exceeds the tolerable daily intake amount, where fish consumption accounts for nearly all of the total intake.

Do Organochlorine Contaminants Modulate the Parasitic Infection Degree in Mediterranean Trout (Salmo trutta)?

We investigated the occurrence of organochlorine pollutants (OCs) in the muscle of brown trout and evaluated their potential modulation of parasite infection. The toxicological risk for consumer health was assessed, too. Trout were collected from the Sila National Park (Calabria region, South of Italy). The highest concentrations emerged for the sum of the 6 non-dioxin-like (ndl) indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (Σ6ndl-PCBs), followed by the 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-di(4-chlorophenyl)-ethane (DDT), dioxin-like PCBs, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and dieldrin. Measured on lipid weight (LW), the mean value of Σ6ndl-PCBs amounted to 201.9 ng g-1, that of ΣDDTs (the sum of DDT-related compounds) to 100.2 ng g-1, with the major contribution of the DDT-metabolite p,p'-DDE which was detected in all sample units (97.6 ng g-1 on average). Among dioxin-like congeners, PCB 118 showed the highest mean concentration (21.96 ng g-1 LW) and was detected in all sample units. Regression analysis of intestinal parasites on OC concentration was performed, controlling for two potential confounding factors, namely sex and sexual stage. The results evidenced the existence of interactions between the dual stressors in the host-parasite system in the wild. A negative and statistically significant correlation was estimated, suggesting that OCs may decrease parasite infection degree. Regarding the toxicological risk evaluation, OC concentrations were consistently below the current European Maximum Residue Limits.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in intertidal sediment and water from Lagos lagoon: Baseline report on occurrence, distribution and ecotoxicological risk assessment

To assess the occurrence and potential ecological risk associated with organic micropollutants in Lagos lagoon, 27 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analysed in sediments and surface water. Sediment samples were obtained from 18 designated sites (SD1 – SD18) using a Van Veen grab sampler and extracted following standard procedures. Cleaned extracts were analysed using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (ECD). The concentration of ∑PCBs in sediment samples ranged between 6757.61 and 273.46 µg/kg. The PCB homologues distribution patterns in sediments indicated that the low-chlorinated (∑di-PCB - ∑penta-PCB) PCBs were more dominant with 61.1 % occurrence than the high-chlorinated ((∑hexa-PCB - ∑nona-PCB) PCBs with 38.9 % relative abundance. The following is the decreasing order of the average homologue composition of PCBs in sediment samples: ∑tetra-PCB (24.6%) > ∑octa-PCB (21 %) > ∑hexa-PCB (13.8 %) > ∑penta-PCB (12.8) > ∑tri-PCB (11.4 %) > ∑hepta-PCB (7.8 %) > ∑nona-PCB (4.9 %) > ∑di-PCB (2.9 %). More so, the ∑PCBs in surface water samples ranged from 69.28 to 440.90 ng/L, with the mean ranging between 7.21 and 16.33 ng/L. The class distribution of PCB homologue profiles in water samples indicated that highly-chlorinated (∑hexa-PCB to ∑nona-PCB) PCBs were the dominant homologues, with 94.4 % occurrence, compared to the very low occurrence rate (5.6 %) of the low-chlorinated (∑di-PCB to ∑penta-PCB) PCBs. Hexa-PCBs (PCB-138 and PCB-153) were the dominant congeners in most water samples. The concentrations of ∑PCBs in sediments and surface water were unprecedentedly high at almost all locations. The total toxicity equivalent concentrations (TTECs) of dioxin-like PCBs for the sediment samples ranged from 0.001 to 2.43 µg/kg, with an average of 0.34 µg/kg. These findings suggest that PCB congeners are pervasive from anthropogenic point sources of pollution. Intensive site-specific monitoring and remediation are recommended.

Concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in ambient air in Hanoi, Vietnam, between 2017 and 2021, and health risk assessments.

The concentrations and seasonal and temporal variations in polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (dl-PCBs) in ambient air from November 2017 to September 2021 were investigated via passive air samplers containing polyurethane foam (PUF) discs in three residential areas: the Cau Giay (CG) urban, Quang Minh (QM) industrial-suburban, and Ba Vi (BV) rural areas, Hanoi, Vietnam. The average total toxic equivalents (TEQs) of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs (∑TEQs), using WHO2005-TEFs, were highest in the QM area (506 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day) and ranged from 317 to 752 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day. Compared to that in the QM area, the average ∑TEQs were lower in the CG area, ranging between 372 and 615 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day with an average value of 482 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day. The average ∑TEQs were lowest in the BV area, ranging from 121 to 414 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day with an average of 231 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day. PCDD/F and dl-PCB air pollution increased during spring and winter. The highest seasonal average ∑TEQs in the CG area was 534 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day in winter. The highest average ∑TEQs in the QM and BV areas were 653 and 280 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day in spring, respectively. The average daily dose (ADD) values of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs through inhalation for adults in the three areas were minimal (9.9-96.2 fg WHO-TEQ/kg body weight (BW)/day) and below the 10% threshold of the tolerable daily intake (TDI) value recommended by the WHO (100-400 fg WHO-TEQ/kg BW/day). For children, the ADD values (15.1-244 fg WHO-TEQ/kg BW/day) were less than and within 10% of the recommended TDI value.
