Digital Video and Digital TV: A Comparison and the Future Directions

This paper presents an overview of the recently emerged development and current work into all digital High Definition Television systems based on the MPEG-2 compression scheme. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of Japan's MUSE, European DVB, and U.S. all digital HDTV systems, examines the global HDTV standardization process, and provides a comprehensive and technical survey of HDTV in Asia, Europe and the U.S. It also analyzes the consumer acceptance and market potential of all digital High Definition Television, and predicts the future merge of broadcast video and computers.

High Speed Digital Circuits for Medical Communication; the MINCS-UH Project

In Japan, a high speed, bidirectional digital satellite communication system called Medical Information Network by Communications Satellite for University Hospitals is currently available in 30 national universities, and many programs, including clinical conferences, lectures and tutorials, have been broadcasted. Its characteristics are: (1) a state-of-the-art digital high-definition television system, (2) excellent security protection using digital encryption (3) bidirectional communications using two satellite circuits simultaneously, and (4) easy operability. High-quality motion images, and security protection mechanisms are essential for use in clinical medicine.

Simulation and implementation of US QAM-based HDTV channel decoder

The authors present system design considerations and simulation results for a receiver prototype for QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation)-based digital HDTV (high-definition television) systems in the context of current standard deliberations for terrestrial broadcasting. Efforts were concentrated on design choices of the receiver sub-systems for adaptive equalization, and carrier and symbol timing recovery. System performance evaluation results that highlight the effect of the above are presented, and some hardware design examples are also given. >

Digital video coding techniques for US high-definition TV

Motion-compensated transform coding is proposed for video compression in systems for the US terrestrial broadcast of high-definition television (HDTV). The challenges of digital HDTV

The characteristics of digital high-definition television (HDTV) and its advantages over analog and hybrid systems are described. The issues to be addressed in using digital transmission in the terrestrial broadcast environment are examined. Four proposed digital HDTV systems are discussed, and their similarities and differences are highlighted. Modulation for terrestrial broadcasting of digital HDTV

The digital modulation methods used by the DigiCipher, DSC-HDTV, ADTV, and ATVA-P digital high-definition television (HDTV) systems are discussed. Three of the systems use a quadrature amplitude modulation method and the fourth uses a vestigial sideband modulation method. The channel equalization and spectrum sharing of the digital HDTV systems is discussed. >
