Bird Community Responses to Restoration along Las Vegas Wash, Nevada

In a 12-year study of seasonal bird use along Las Vegas Wash (Clark County, Nevada), an area undergoing intensive channel stabilization and riparian and wetland restoration, we found that total bird abundance and species richness significantly increased. In the late phase of the project, total bird abundance was greatest during the nonbreeding season and winter transition, and species richness was greatest during the fall transition. Species associated with riparian shrubs decreased, likely as a response to large-scale removal of non-native shrubs and the lag in recovery of a native shrub understory. Species associated with trees and the mid-story had a mixed response, with detections of those species previously most closely associated with non-native trees showing a negative trend, while those associated with native overstory plants showing an increasing or mixed trend. Detections of wetland and aquatic species increased significantly throughout the project. This study shows differential restoration responses of species based on their natural history, seasons of primary use of the site, and the lag time in recovery of particular vegetation elements that are used by various species assemblages.

Clash of mosquito wings: Larval interspecific competition among the mosquitoes, Culex pipiens, Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti reveals complex population dynamics in shared habitats.

Globalisation, climate change and international trade are the factors contributing to the spread of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) and Ae. aegypti into new areas. In newly invaded habitats, these non-native species can serve as arbovirus disease vectors or increase the risk of disease spill over. These mosquitoes continue to emerge in new areas where they have or will have overlapping ranges with other resident mosquito species. The study investigates how invasive Aedes mosquitoes compete with the native Culex pipiens in Türkiye, which might affect the overall mosquito population dynamics and disease transmission risks. Both Aedes species exhibited contrasting responses to interspecific competition with Cx. pipiens. While Ae. albopictus suffers reduced emergence primarily in larger containers with abundant food, Ae. aegypti surprisingly thrives in mixed cultures under all food conditions. Adult Cx. pipiens emergence drops by half against Ae. albopictus and under specific conditions with Ae. aegypti. Competition influences mosquito size differently across species and life stages. Culex pipiens females grow larger when competing with Ae. aegypti, potentially indicating resource advantage or compensatory strategies. However, Ae. albopictus size shows more nuanced responses, suggesting complex interactions at play. Understanding how invasive and native mosquitoes interact with each other can provide insights into how they adapt and coexist in shared habitats. This knowledge can inform effective control strategies. The study highlights the differential responses of invasive Aedes species and the potential for managing populations based on their competitive interactions with the native Cx. pipiens. It can contribute to improved monitoring and prediction systems for the spread of invasive mosquitoes and the associated disease risks.

Resilient Response to Combined Heat and Drought Stress Conditions of a Tomato Germplasm Collection, Including Natural and Ethyl Methanesulfonate-Induced Variants

Agricultural systems are currently facing significant issues, primarily due to population growth rates in the context of global climate change. Rising temperatures cause plant heat stress and impact crop yield, which in turn compromises global food production and safety. Climate change is also having a significant impact on water availability around the world, and droughts are becoming more frequent and severe in many regions. The combined effect of both heat and drought stresses increases plant damage, resulting in reduced plant development and productivity loss. Therefore, developing heat–drought-tolerant crop varieties is crucial for enhancing yield under these challenging conditions. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a major vegetable crop highly appreciated for its nutritional qualities, is particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures, which have a significant negative impact on tomato fruit setting and cause male gametophyte abortion. In this work, a classical genetic approach was employed to identify tomato genotypes showing a resilient response to combined heat and drought stress conditions. A phenotype screening of a natural germplasm collection and an ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenized population resulted in the identification of a significant number of tomato lines tolerant to combined heat and drought conditions, specifically 161 EMS lines and 24 natural accessions as tolerant. In addition, TILLING and Eco-TILLING analyses were used as proof-of-concept to isolate new genetic variants of genes previously reported as key regulators of abiotic stress responses in different species. The identification of these variants holds the potential to provide suitable plant material for breeding programs focused on enhancing tomato resilience to adverse climate conditions.

Distribution and Conservation Status of Plants’ species in the Botanical Garden and Arboretum domiciled in University of Uyo, Nigeria

This research assessed the plant species composition, distribution and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conservation status of plants in University of Uyo botanical garden and arboretum using systematic sampling technique. The species were sampled in 10 x 10 m quadrats spaced at least regular intervals of 20 m from each quadrat. Thirty-one and thirty-eight species were encountered in the arboretum and botanic garden respectively. In terms of the frequency, Chromolaena odorata and Nauclea diderichii had the highest values (75%), while Acanthus montanus, Anthocleista djalonensis, Anthonotha macrophylla, Baphia nitida, Barteria nigritiana, Carpolobia lutea, Ceiba pentandra, Cnestis ferruginea, Entandrophragma utile, Hura crepitans, Lonchocarpus griffoneonus, Rauvolfia vomitoria, Senna siamea, Tamarindus indica, Tectona grandis and Treculia africana had the least frequency (25% each). For the density, Nauclea diderichii had the value of 250±15.30 st/ha. In the botanic garden, Ageratum houstonianum, Alchornea cordifolia, Chromolaena ordorata and Croton hirtus had the highest frequency (100%) while Allamanda cathartica, Asystasia gangetica, Bambusa vulgaris, Caladium bicolor, Centrosema virginianum, Cnestis ferruginea, Culcasia scandens, Cyathula prostrata, Desmodium scorpiurus, Emilia sonchifolia, Heliconia psittacorum, Ipomea involucrata, Lagenaria sphaerica, Mimosa pudica, Nephrolepis bisserata, Panicum sp., Pentaclethra macrophylla, Plumeria rubra, Polyalthia longifolia, Pteridium aquilinum, Scoparia dulcis, Senna siamea, Sesamum radiatum and Sida acuta had the least frequency (33.33%). The vegetation of both sites indicated variation in composition of trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers and ferns. These heterogeneities may be a pointer to their varying adaptation levels and differential responses of plant species to pedological and anthropogenic influences.

Detection of plant cadmium toxicity by monitoring dielectric response of intact root systems on a fine timescale.

The root dielectric response was measured on a minute scale to assess its efficiency for monitoring short-term cadmium (Cd) toxicity non-destructively. Electrical capacitance (CR), dissipation factor (DR) and electrical conductance (GR) were detected during the 24 to 168 h after Cd treatment (0, 20, 50 mg Cd2+ kg-1 substrate) in potted maize, cucumber and pea. Stress was also evaluated by measuring leaf chlorophyll content, Fv/Fm and stomatal conductance (gs) in situ, and shoot and root mass and total root length after harvest. CR showed a clear diurnal pattern, reflecting the water uptake rate, and decreased significantly in response to excessive Cd due to impeded root growth, the reduced tissue permittivity caused by accelerated lignification, and root ageing. Cd exposure markedly increased DR, indicating greater conductive energy loss due to oxidative membrane damage and enhanced electrolyte leakage. GR, which was coupled with root hydraulic conductance and varied diurnally, was increased transiently by Cd toxicity due to enhanced membrane permeability, but declined thereafter owing to stress-induced leaf senescence and transpiration loss. The time series of impedance components indicated the comparatively high Cd tolerance of the applied maize and the sensitivity of pea cultivar, which was confirmed by visible shoot symptoms, repeated physiological investigations and biomass measurements. The results demonstrated the potential of single-frequency dielectric measurements to follow certain aspects of the stress response of different species on a fine timescale without plant injury. The approach can be combined with widely used plant physiological methods and could contribute to breeding crop genotypes with improved stress tolerance.

Predicted changes in distribution and grazing value of Stipa-based plant communities across the Eurasian steppe

The Eurasian steppe is one of the world's largest continuous areas of grassland and has an important role in supporting livestock grazing, the most ubiquitous land use on Earth. However, the Eurasian steppe is under threat, from irrational grazing utilization, climate change, and resource exploitation. We used an ensemble modeling approach to predict the current and future distribution of Stipa-dominated plant communities in three important steppe subregions; the Tibetan Alpine, Central Asian, and Black Sea-Kazakhstan subregions. We combined this with an assessment of the grazing value of 22 Stipa species, the dominant grassland species in the area, to predict how grazing value might change under future climate change predictions. We found that the effects of changing climates on grazing values differed across the three subregions. Grazing values increased in the Tibetan alpine steppe and to a lesser extent in Central Asia, but there were few changes in the Black Sea-Kazakhstan subregion. The response of different species to changing climates varied with environmental variables. Finally, our trait-based assessment of Stipa species revealed variations in grazing value, and this had major effects on the overall grazing value of the region. Our results reinforce the importance of trait-based characteristics of steppe plant species, how these traits affect grazing value, and how grazing values will change across different areas of the Eurasian steppe. Our work provides valuable insights into how different species will respond to changing climates and grazing, with important implications for sustainable management of different areas of the vast Eurasian steppe ecosystem.

Species traits and latitude mediate bird responses to forest edges globally

ContextAlthough local studies comparing species abundance between forest edges and interiors are common, general patterns in the response of different species to edges are still to be determined. There is little consensus on the impacts of forest edge effects on the abundance of individual bird species, probably because the species traits affecting edge responses have rarely been synthesized.ObjectiveWe aimed to identify how different species’ traits, as well as extrinsic (environmental) factors, mediate the responses of birds to forest edges globally.MethodsWe collected global information from bibliographic databases from 59 studies with 63 different datasets that compared bird abundance between forest edges and interiors. For each species, we compiled six traits (diet, habitat preference, territoriality, body mass, hand-wing index, and foraging stratum). Using Linear Mixed-effects Models, we evaluated how species traits, latitude, edge contrast, and sampling method affected bird responses to edges.ResultsBased on 2981 responses of 1414 bird species, we found that plant/seedeaters birds responded positively to edges. The strength of habitat preferences on edge responses was also mediated by latitude. Open-area species from tropics exhibited a positive response, diminishing as latitude increases. Conversely, forest species tend to exhibit a somewhat more negative response in tropical zones. Edge effects were more negative for soft (low-contrast) edges.ConclusionsSpecies traits, in particular diet and habitat preferences interacting with latitude, mediate the impacts of edge effects on different bird species. These species traits and latitudinal gradients must be explicitly considered in models attempting to explain variability in edge responses among species, as well as in conservation actions in fragmented landscapes.

Comparative study of influence of water stress on effectiveness of sulfosulfuron to two species of weeds through biomass and photo-physiological parameters

Drought may affect the effectiveness of herbicides. However, our knowledge about the interaction between drought and the response of different species to the application of herbicides is limited. Dose-response experiments were conducted on two major weeds of wheat fields to investigate the water stress effects on sulfosulfuron effectiveness. At the 2-leaf stage, Hordeum spontaneum and Sinapis arvensis were subjected to two irrigation regimes (10 and 65% of the available water depletion) and 7 days later, the plants were exposed to sulfosulfuron doses (0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800% of the recommended dose). The biochemical and physiological responses of the plants were investigated 10 days later. H. spontaneum showed lower sensitivity to the herbicide than S. arvensis. Water stress decreased the efficiency of sulfosulfuron on both species with a greater effect on H. spontaneum. The herbicide required to induce 90% reduction of total dry mass (ED90) in water-stressed H. spontaneum was 63248.0 g ai ha−1 (2377.7 times the recommended dose of herbicide), and this amount was 10.74 times the ED90 value in irrigated plants. The ED90 of sulfosulfuron to reduce the total dry mass of irrigated and water-stressed S. arvensis was 1022.4 and 1862.9 g ai ha−1, respectively. Water stress alleviated chlorophyll decline in herbicide-treated H. spontaneum, but induced chlorophyll degradation in S. arvensis and decreased Fv/Fm in both species. The results suggested that higher doses of sulfosulfuron are recommended for use in arid conditions to effectively manage weeds, particularly those exhibiting reduced sensitivity to the herbicide.

Competitive effect, but not competitive response, varies along a climatic gradient depending on tree species identity

BackgroundUnderstanding the role of species identity in interactions among individuals is crucial for assessing the productivity and stability of mixed forests over time. However, there is limited knowledge concerning the variation in competitive effect and response of different species along climatic gradients. In this study, we investigated the importance of climate, tree size, and competition on the growth of three tree species: spruce (Picea abies), fir (Abies alba), and beech (Fagus sylvatica), and examined their competitive response and effect along a climatic gradient. MethodsWe selected 39 plots distributed across the European mountains with records of the position and growth of 5,759 individuals. For each target species, models relating tree growth to tree size, climate and competition were proposed. Competition was modelled using a neighbourhood competition index that considered the effects of inter- and intraspecific competition on target trees. Competitive responses and effects were related to climate. Likelihood methods and information theory were used to select the best model. ResultsOur findings revealed that competition had a greater impact on target species growth than tree size or climate. Climate did influence the competitive effects of neighbouring species, but it did not affect the target species' response to competition. The strength of competitive effects varied along the gradient, contingent on the identity of the interacting species. When the target species exhibited an intermediate competitive effect relative to neighbouring species, both higher inter- than intraspecific competitive effects and competition reduction occurred along the gradient. Notably, species competitive effects were most pronounced when the target species’ growth was at its peak and weakest when growing conditions were far from their maximum. ConclusionsClimate modulates the effects of competition from neighbouring trees on the target tree and not the susceptibility of the target tree to competition. The modelling approach should be useful in future research to expand our knowledge of how competition modulates forest communities across environmental gradients.

Persistence of Root Exudates of Sorghum bicolor and Solidago canadensis: Impacts on Invasive and Native Species.

Root exudates of the invasive Solidago canadensis and the cereal crop Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench cv. 'Hybridsorgo' were tested for allelopathic interactions against native and invasive plant species in a controlled environment. After the surface was sterilized, the seeds of two invasive species (Bromus sterilis and Veronica persica) and two native species (Youngia japonica and Rumex acetosa) were germinated and transplanted into the soil (1:1 mixture of coco peat and sand) that had been conditioned for one month by the cultivation of Solidago canadensis and Sorghum bicolor, both in combination or as unplanted controls. After an additional eight weeks of growth, morphometric measurements of the shoot and root, including foliar characteristics and above- and below-ground biomass accumulation, were performed. The results revealed significant inhibitory effects of root exudates released by Sorghum bicolor and Solidago canadensis on native species' productivity and physiology. The invasive species exhibited variable growth responses, with Veronica persica showing reduced shoot and root expansion, but Bromus sterilis revealed increased shoot and root biomass allocation and nutrition under the exudate treatments. Exudates from Solidago canadensis and Sorghum bicolor together showed synergistic negative effects on native species, while they promoted growth and nutrition in Veronica persica. Taken together, the differential species responses indicate that the tested native species were more sensitive to the allelopathic compounds than the invasive species, which is in line with the theory of novel weapons. The legacy effects of root exudates of both Sorghum bicolor and Solidago canadensis could promote invasive establishment through imposing allelochemical interference competition against native plant species. Understanding the specific allelopathic mechanisms may help with the development of integrated strategies for managing invasive species.

Adaptive strategies to freeze-thaw cycles in branch hydraulics of tree species coexisting in a temperate forest

Freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) limit the distribution and survival of temperate tree species. Tree species with different wood types coexist in temperate forests and are subjected to the same FTCs. It is essential to understand how these trees differentially cope with xylem hydraulic failure induced by FTCs in the field. The branch hydraulic traits and nonstructural carbohydrate concentration of six coexisting tree species in a temperate forest were measured from mid-winter to early spring when the FTCs occurred from January to April. The percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC) was lower, and the water potential inducing a 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (P50) was more negative in tracheid trees than in ring- and diffuse-porous trees, suggesting tracheid trees with narrow tracheid diameters showed less vulnerable to embolism and provided a lower degree of hydraulic failure during FTCs (stronger resistance). Ring-porous trees always showed lower hydraulic conductivity and higher PLC and P50, and these traits did not change during FTCs, suggesting that they might lose the hydraulic functions in winter and abandon the last year xylem. The P50 in diffuse-porous increased after several FTCs (frost fatigue), but that in tracheid species continued to increase (or even decrease) until the end of FTCs (69 cycles), suggesting that tracheid trees were less sensitive to frost fatigue than diffuse-porous trees. Soluble sugar concentration in deciduous trees negatively correlated with PLC at the end of FTCs, indicating that the effect of soluble sugar on refilling embolism occurred in early spring. While the soluble sugar concentration of deciduous trees decreased, that of two evergreen tracheid trees gradually increased, possibly due to the winter photosynthesis of evergreen leaves. Our results suggest temperate trees adopt different strategies to cope with the same FTCs. These findings enrich the understanding of plant hydraulics and carbon physiology in winter and provide insights into the response of different species coexisting in temperate forests under climate change.

Monitoring of multiple fish species by quantitative environmental DNA metabarcoding surveys over two summer seasons.

Periodic monitoring can provide important information for the protection of endangered fish, sustainable use of fishery resources and management of alien species. Previous studies have attempted to monitor fish using non-invasive environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, generally employing quantitative PCR to quantify the eDNA concentration. However, the throughput was limited. High-throughput metabarcoding technology can detect the DNA of multiple species simultaneously in a single experiment but does not provide sufficient quantification. In this study, we applied a quantitative metabarcoding approach to simultaneously quantify the eDNA concentration of an entire fish assemblage in a small reservoir over two summer seasons. Traditional surveys were also conducted to investigate the individuals of fish. The eDNA concentrations were quantified using quantitative metabarcoding, and the fish species detected using this approach were highly consistent with the results of traditional fish monitoring. A significant positive relationship was observed between the eDNA concentration and fish species abundance. Seasonal changes in fish community structure were estimated using eDNA concentrations, which may reveal the activity seasons of different fish. The eDNA concentrations of different fish species peaked at different water temperatures, reflecting the differential responses of fish species to this environmental factor. Finally, by detecting outlier eDNA concentrations, the spawning activities of 13 fish species were estimated, 12 of which were roughly consistent with the current knowledge of fish spawning periods. These results indicate that quantitative eDNA metabarcoding with dozens of sampling times is useful for the simultaneous ecological monitoring of multiple fish species.

Trophic level and specialization moderate effects of habitat loss and landscape diversity on cavity‐nesting bees, wasps and their parasitoids

Abstract Habitat loss is a primary driver of biodiversity decline, but differences in species responses to habitat loss from local to landscape scales are poorly understood. Trophic level, food and habitat specialization have been suggested to be important predictors of species responses to habitat loss, landscape diversity and landscape scale. Using cavity‐nesting communities of bees, wasps and their parasitoids on calcareous grasslands as a model system allowed us to compare responses of species differing regarding their trophic level, and degree of specialization on habitat and food. We found that species from higher trophic levels experienced semi‐natural habitat at larger spatial scales than those of lower trophic levels, but only, when they were generalists (abundance of bees, 150 m radius, vs. wasps feeding on herbivores, 450 m radius), not specialists (bees, 150 m, vs. bee parasitoids, 150 m). Parasitoids, which are typically more specialized regarding their food resources (hosts), compared to predators such as predatory wasps, responded to habitat loss at the same spatial scales as their hosts, suggesting strong bottom‐up effects of resource availability, that is, host availability driving parasitoid abundance. Bees were mostly habitat specialists of calcareous grasslands and mainly driven by local habitat loss, whereas wasps as habitat generalists were mostly affected by landscape diversity. Our study highlights the need to consider the different spatial scales contingent on trophic level and specialization of target species groups, maintaining or restoring both local habitat and landscape diversity, as this is needed for their successful conservation.

A model of mass extinction accounting for the differential evolutionary response of species to a climate change

Mass extinction is a phenomenon in the history of life on Earth when a considerable number of species go extinct over a relatively short period of time. The magnitude of extinction varies between the events, the most well known are the “Big Five” when more than half of all species went extinct. There were many extinctions with a smaller magnitude too. It is widely believed that the common trigger leading to a mass extinction is a climate change such as a global warming or global cooling. There are, however, many open questions with regard to the effect and potential importance of specific factors and processes. In this paper, we develop a novel mathematical model that takes into account two factors largely overlooked in the mass extinctions literature, namely, (i) the active feedback of some taxa – in particular, vegetation – to the climate through changing the albedo of the Earth’s surface and (ii) species’ adaptive evolutionary response to a climate change. We show that whether a species goes extinct or not depends on a subtle interplay between the scale of the climate change and the rate of species’ evolutionary response. We also show that species’ response to a fast climate change can exhibit long transient dynamics (false extinction) when the species population density remain at a low value for a long time before recovering to its safe steady state value. Finally, we show that the distribution of extinction frequencies predicted by our model is generally consistent with the fossil record.

Soil seed banks provide a storage effect in post-logging regrowth forests of southeastern Australia

Despite the importance of soil seed banks in diversity maintenance, our understanding of plant response to changes in resource availability is largely limited to above-ground vegetation. We investigated how forest structure and edaphic properties influenced the above-ground vegetation and soil seed banks following logging in montane regrowth forests dominated by Eucalyptus regnans in the Central Highlands of southeastern Australia. We surveyed above-ground vegetation, soil seed banks, forest structure and soil properties across 20 harvest units, aged 16 to 20 years. A total of 80 species were identified in above-ground vegetation with 72 species in the soil seed bank, with only 34% of species co-occurring in both species’ pools. Climate, soil, topography, and light availability shaped plant composition but the relative importance of these properties varied among individual species and pools of diversity (combined, above-ground, soil seed bank, life form). Annual heat moisture index (AHMI) was the most important factor that influenced plant community composition across all species pools with individual species positively associated with AHMI. Acacia, but not Eucalyptus stem density further moderated plant response via effects on both light availability and soil nitrogen at the stem exclusion phase of stand development. Structurally mediated controls on above-ground community composition flow through to the soil seed bank via above-ground diversity effects on below-ground composition. For the combined species pool, individual species were most frequently related to Acacia stem density that on average explained 20% of model variation. Soil nutrients accounted for most of the model variation for individual species in above-ground (26%), soil seed bank (20%) and non-woody (32%) pools of diversity, with AHMI accounting for most of the model variation for woody species (18%). The differential response of individual species and community composition to gradients in resource availability across different pools of species diversity and life forms clearly demonstrates a storage effect in wet temperate forests of southeastern Australia that promotes post-disturbance recruitment and persistence. Our work suggests logging interacts with broad environmental controls to shape species diversity. The key role of Acacia stem density as a biotic filter of plant diversity provides opportunity to shape future plant diversity through management interventions such as thinning in the early stages of stand development. With native forest harvesting of these forests set to end from 2024, our findings provide important information on future patterns of plant diversity as logged forests recover over time, opportunities for management interventions in shaping plant composition, and potential impacts of future wildfire.

Variability of earthworm's functional traits in eastern Amazon is more species-dependent than environment-dependent

Understanding the causes of variability in functional traits is an important question in earthworm ecology. While interspecific variation in anatomical dimensions for the same trait is well accepted, the role of environmental filters, soil degradation, and environmental stress in affecting the variability of functional traits is not well understood. In this study, we sought to determine the relative importance of environmental factors and earthworm species taxonomy on the variability in functional traits within species (intraspecific variability). We focused on eight functional traits including body mass, body length, body diameter, gizzard, gizzard thickness, septum thickness, typhlosole, and gut organic matter. We sampled earthworms of 11 different species in various regions of the eastern Amazon to determine the general responses of different species' characteristics when exposed to various ecosystem and soil conditions. Our results suggest that the functional traits of earthworms are influenced in different ways by environmental conditions. One set of traits, including body mass, body length, and body diameter, was more constant and independent of environmental variability, while another set, including gizzard diameter and length, gizzard muscle thickness, septum thickness, typhlosole, and intestinal organic matter, was more sensitive. The most affected by different environmental variables was septum thickness. We also examined which environmental factors are most important for trait variability. Our study highlights the importance of considering both environmental factors and taxonomic classification when studying the variability of functional traits within earthworm species. Overall, our results suggest that taxonomic classification alone is a good guide for estimating the major functional traits of earthworms in the Brazilian Amazon, but local conditions can their variability is which is essential for informing conservation efforts and maintaining ecosystem function.

Responses of Ephemeral Plants to Precipitation Changes and Their Effects on Community in Central Asia Cold Desert.

In the context of global climate change, changes in precipitation patterns will have profound effects on desert plants, particularly on shallow-rooted plants, such as ephemeral plants. Therefore, we conducted an experiment on artificial control of precipitation for four dominant ephemeral plants, Erodium oxyrhinchum, Alyssum linifolium, Malcolmia scorpioides, and Hyalea pulchella, in the southern edge of Gurbantunggut Desert. We measured the importance value and some growth parameters of the four species under increased or decreased precipitation and constructed trait correlation networks for each of the four species. We also compared the response of increased or decreased precipitation to vegetation coverage. The results show that drought significantly reduced the survival rate, seed production and weight, and aboveground biomass accumulation of ephemeral plants. The four ephemeral plants showed different tolerance and response strategies to precipitation changes. E. oxyrhinchum and M. scorpioides can avoid drought by accelerating life history, and E. oxyrhinchum, A. linifolium, and H. pulchella can alleviate the negative effects of drought by adjusting leaf traits. However, the response of different species to the wet treatment was not consistent. Based on the results of the trait correlation network, we consider A. linifolium belongs to the ruderal plant, E. oxyrhinchum and M. scorpioides belong to the competitive plants, and H. pulchella belongs to the stress-tolerant plant. The outstanding trait coordination ability of E. oxyrhinchum makes it show absolute dominance in the community. This indicate that ephemeral plants can adapt to precipitation changes to a certain extent, and that distinct competitive advantages in growth or reproduction enabled species coexistence in the same ecological niche. Nevertheless, drought significantly reduces their community cover and the ecological value of ephemeral plants. These findings established the basis to predict vegetation dynamics in arid areas under precipitation changes.

Different responses of functional groups to N addition increased synchrony and shortened community reproductive duration in an alpine meadow

Abstract Flowering and fruiting phenology of plants is sensitive to environmental cues, and changes in reproductive phenology of individual plant species under climate change have been widely reported. However, how species‐level phenological responses scale up to affect community‐level reproductive phenology patterns (synchrony and reproductive duration) are still unclear. An experiment on the effects of nitrogen (N) addition and precipitation changes on reproductive phenological traits of 52 species was conducted in an alpine meadow on the eastern Tibetan Plateau to determine the influence of the phenological response in different functional groups on community‐level reproductive phenology. N addition significantly delayed the onset date of reproductive phenology of sedges (early‐flowering species) and advanced the end date of reproduction of forbs (late‐flowering species). Meanwhile, N addition reduced the number of individuals involved in reproduction of sedges and forbs, but it increased that of grasses (late‐flowering species). Furthermore, N addition increased reproductive synchrony, delayed the onset and shortened the duration of reproductive phenology at the community level. However, precipitation changes and their interaction with N addition had no significant effect on reproductive phenology of the alpine plant community. Synthesis. These results suggested that differences in the direction and magnitude of response of different species to N enrichment lead to compression of reproductive duration at the community level, increasing the degree of overlap between reproductive events, which could change future species diversity, trophic interactions and productivity accumulation in alpine meadows on the Tibetan Plateau. Overall, knowledge of phenological responses from plant functional groups to the community level contributes to robust prediction and mechanistic understanding of community structure and function in response to future climate change.
