To improve the tracking servo performance, a novel signal waveform multi-level (SWML) read-only disc realized on the digital versatile disc (DVD) platform is presented. The characteristic of the differential phase detection (DPD) signal of the SWML read-only disc is analyzed both in theory and experiment. The amplitude of the DPD signal of the SWML read-only disc in an open tracking servo loop is about 2/3 of that of the DVD read-only disc. The uniformity and symmetry of the DPD signal of the SWML read-only disc are similar to those of the DVD read-only disc and better than the former multi-level run-length limited (ML-RLL) read-only disc.

Analysis of the Differential Phase Detection Signal in Multi-level Run-Length Limited Read-Only Disk Driver

Multilevel run-length-limited (ML-RLL) recording technology could be employed to increase the capacity of the read-only disc without changing optical and mechanical units. In this paper, the tracking error signal (TES) of differential phase detection (DPD) for ML-RLL digital versatile disk (DVD) read-only disk driver is analyzed in both theoretical and experimental way, the uniformity and symmetry of which are worse than that of the DVD read-only disk driver. The variation of peak to peak (PP) value distribution of the DPD signal in open loop of ML-RLL DVD read-only disk driver is about 2.6 times of that of the conventional DVD driver while the asymmetry is about 4 times. It is predicted that some improvements of the tracking servo system are needed in ML-RLL system.

Analysis of the effects of disk tilt on the differential-phase-detection signal in a high-density DVD read-only disk driver

A high-density DVD (HD-DVD) is one of the high-density optical storage technology newly designed to meet the demands of high-definition video broadcasting that is very sensitive to the radial tilt of a disk. An analytic model based on diffraction theory is presented in detail to calculate the tracking error signal of a HD-DVD read-only disk driver by using the differential-phase-detection (DPD) method when radial tilt of a disk occurs. The effects of the tilt on a DPD signal in a HD-DVD read-only disk driver are quantified and compared to those in a DVD read-only disk driver. Experimental measurements for the DPD signal under different radial tilt angles in a HD-DVD read-only disk driver are also reported.

Dependence of Differential Phase Detection Signals on Astigmatism in a Focused Spot

We have simulated the differential phase detection (DPD) signal characteristics in the presence of astigmatism in the focused spot of an optical pickup for a DVD player. Both DPD signals generated from four elements and two elements of a four-segment photo-diode have been simulated. The DPD signal level and the offset level depend on the direction of astigmatism and the type of detection. In the two-element detection, astigmatism of 45 deg against the tangential direction of an optical disk deteriorates the DPD signal characteristics more severely than that of 0 deg along the tangential direction.

Simulation of Differential Phase Detection Method Combined with Astigmatic Method using a Half Mirror in an Optical Pick-up

In an error detection optical system for optical pick-ups using a parallel plane type half mirror, influence on the differential phase detection (DPD) signal by a coma aberration was simulated. The coma aberration deforms the spot profile on the photodetector and influences the DPD signal level characteristics and the offset characteristics with respect to the objective lens shift. In the 4-segment-type DPD, the coma aberration caused by a half mirror 2.75 mm thick hardly affects the DPD signal if the photodetector is not misaligned. On the other hand, the 2-segment-type DPD has a small offset variation with respect to the objective lens shift and a large variation of the DPD signal level against the misalignment of the photodetector in comparison with the 4-segment-type DPD when there is no coma aberration. In the presence of a coma aberration, however, these variations of the 2-segment-type DPD are suppressed by choosing a pair of elements without the coma apex part of the spot.

Measurements and simulations of differential phase-tracking signals in optical disk data storage

The tracking-error signal generated in differential phase detection (DPD) is theoretically analyzed and numerically simulated. Experimental measurements of the DPD signal versus the tracking offset obtained on compact read-only and phase-change disks are also reported. The signal is sensitive to the geometry of the marks, intersymbol interference along the track, and cross-track cross talk. A characteristic parameter is introduced to relate the DPD signal to the reflectivities of the mark and the spacer. For read-only disks such as CD-ROM and DVD-ROM, the magnitude of the DPD signal does not seem to depend on the reflectivity of the disks, nor does it depend on the pit depth. As for the influence of the various aberrations on the DPD signal, coma in the cross-track direction is shown to give rise to significant tracking offset, whereas defocus and spherical aberrations reduce the magnitude of the DPD signal appreciably.
