Evaluation of the relationship between plasma viscosity and selected menopausal symptoms using the Menopause Rating Scale.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity are associated with the severity of postmenopausal symptoms using the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). This study included 108 postmenopausal women admitted to menopause clinics. Participants were divided into two groups according to their MRS scores. Groups 1 (n = 52) and 2 (n = 56) were composed of healthy postmenopausal women with MRS scores of <14 and ≥14 points, respectively. The clinical findings and hemorheological parameters were compared between the two groups. Comparing plasma viscosity levels between the two groups showed that group 1 had 1.25 ± 0.08 centipoise, whereas group 2 had 1.30 ± 0.10 centipoise ( P = 0.03). The difference in plasma viscosity between the two groups persisted after adjustment for age (1.24 ± 0.08 vs 1.31 ± 0.10; P < 0.001). Plasma viscosity was also significantly correlated with age ( r = 0.384, P < 0.001), menopausal duration ( r = 0.362, P < 0.001), and urogenital symptoms ( r = 410, P < 0.001). Increased plasma viscosity levels were significantly associated with selected postmenopausal symptoms, independent of age.

Effect of Early Electroacupuncture Combined with Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) on Pain Perception and Dysfunction in Patients after Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA).

Objective A retrospective case-control study was performed to observe the effect and clinical significance of early electroacupuncture combined with enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) on pain perception and dysfunction after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods About 100 patients who diagnosed with TKA from February 2019 to April 2021 were enrolled in our hospital. The patients were arbitrarily assigned into control group and study group. The former group was cured with electroacupuncture in the early stage, and the latter group was intervened on the basis of early electroacupuncture combined with the concept of ERAS. The curative effect, the time of getting out of bed for the first time after operation, the time of postoperative rehabilitation, postoperative rehabilitation cost, pain score and knee joint function score, range of motion (ROM) of knee joint, low shear of whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen level, and postoperative complications were compared. Results There exhibited no statistical difference in clinical data. In terms of the treatment effects, there were 27 cases of markedly effective, 22 cases of effective, and 1 case of ineffective in the study group, and the total effective rate was 98.00%; in the control group, 15 cases were markedly effective, 28 cases were effective, and 13 cases were ineffective, and the total effective rate was 86.00%. Compared to the control group, the total effective rate of the study group was higher (P < 0.05). And the first time to get out of bed and the postoperative rehabilitation time in the study group were lower. Compared to the control group (10113.42 ± 524.83) yuan, the postoperative rehabilitation cost in the study group (12401.71 ± 530.77) yuan was higher. In terms of the scores of VAS and HSS, there exhibited no remarkable difference before treatment (P > 0.05). After treatment, the VAS score lessened and the HSS score augmented the study group VAS score (1.76 ± 0.28); the score in the control group was lower compared to the control group (3.45 ± 0.36), and HSS scoring (83.48 ± 11.23) points higher compared to the control group (65.82 ± 10.44) points (P < 0.05). The ROM of knee joint augmented successively at the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th week after treatment comparison between groups, the ROM of the knee joint in the study group at the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th week was (49.47 ± 3.60)°, (64.38 ± 5.32)°, (86.93 ± 6.72)°, and (104.20 ± 9.11)°, is higher compared to the control group (46.53 ± 3.41)°, (61.52 ± 5.20)°, (78.42 ± 6.45)°, and (98.77 ± 8.67)° (P < 0.05). One day after operation, there exhibited no remarkable difference in whole blood viscosity low shear, plasma viscosity, and fibrinogen level (P > 0.05). However, there exhibited no remarkable difference in plasma viscosity and fibrinogen level at 1 day and 7 days after operation (P > 0.05). Seven days after operation, the whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, and fibrinogen in the study group were lower (P < 0.05). The probability of postoperative complications was compared. In the study group, there were 2 cases of limb swelling and pain, 1 case of joint stiffness, and no swelling and pain complicated with deep venous thrombosis, and the total incidence was 6.00%. In the control group, there were 5 cases of limb swelling and pain, 3 cases of joint stiffness, and 3 cases of swelling and pain complicated with deep venous thrombosis, with a total incidence of 22.00%. The incidence of adverse reactions in the study group was lower (χ2 = 5.317 P < 0.05). Conclusion Early electroacupuncture combined with ERAS is of positive significance to the patients after TKA, which can reduce the pain, enhance the function of the knee joint, and promote the ROM of the knee joint, and can effectively shorten the first time out of bed and postoperative rehabilitation time and reduce whole blood viscosity low shear, plasma viscosity, and fibrinogen level, but the overall rehabilitation cost is high, and clinical application should be combined with the actual situation of patients.

30-days effects of vildagliptin on vascular function, plasma viscosity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and intestinal peptides on drug-na\xefve women with diabetes and obesity: a randomized head-to-head metformin-controlled study

BackgroundObesity is the main risk factor for diabetes and excessive visceral fat triggers low-grade inflammatory process, mediated by activation and release of cytokines and high flow of free fatty acids that contribute to insulin resistance, increased oxidative stress, and impaired endothelial function. Metformin and vildagliptin have known vasculoprotective actions, but the value of these drugs on drug-naïve diabetic patients during 30 days use warrants investigation. Our purpose was to observe their effects on endothelial function, oxidative stress, inflammatory biomarkers, and plasma viscosity.Methods38 women with obesity and type 2 diabetes drug-naïve, aged between 19 and 50 years, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, were recruited and subjected to measurements of endothelial function, nutritive skin microvascular reactivity, plasma viscosity, inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers at baseline and randomized 1:1 to ingest metformin (850 mg twice/day) or vildagliptin (50 mg twice/day) during 30 days, and then, re-evaluated.ResultsNo differences between groups were noticed at baseline. After treatment, vildagliptin promoted an improvement on endothelial-dependent and -independent vasodilatations, at arteriole level, while metformin resulted in improved nutritive microvascular reactivity, at the capillary level. Intragroup analysis showed that vildagliptin reduced insulin, C-peptide and oxidized LDL, and increased adiponectin and glucagon-like peptide-1 while metformin reduced weight, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 activity, with an unexpected increase on tumor necrosis factor-α. No significant difference in plasma viscosity was noted.ConclusionsIn the vascular beds investigated, both drugs used for only 30 days improved endothelial function, through distinct, and possibly, complementary mechanisms on drug-naïve diabetic women.Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01827280

Blood rheology during normal pregnancy.

Recent studies have shown increased RBC aggregation and no difference in plasma viscosity in the presence of markedly lower hematocrit in women at term compared to non-pregnant women. Little is known about the outcome of blood rheological parameters and red blood cell (RBC) deformability particularly in the course of normal pregnancy. During a 36 months interval 1.913 blood samples were randomly collected from a total of 945 pregnant women in the course of their pregnancy (n = 1.259) and during puerperium (upto 1 week; n = 654). Next to the blood count, hemorheological parameters including red blood cell (RBC) -aggregation (stasis E0; low shear E1), -deformability (low, moderate and high shear conditions) and plasma viscosity (pv) were assessed. Plasma viscosity (pv) was examined using KSPV 1 Fresenius, RBC aggregation (stasis: E0 and low shear: E1) using MA1-Aggregometer; Myrenne and RBC deformability (def) was determined by Rheodyn SSD Diffractometer, Myrenne, Roetgen, Germany were tested. In some of these women laboratory results prior to pregnancy (n = 145) were available which were compared with those during pregnancy. Mean maternal pv remained unchanged within each trimester and compared to the values before pregnancy and during early puerperium (Range of means: 1.18-1.20 mPa S). In contrast, RBC agg (E0 and E1) was markedly higher in the 2nd (21.8 ± 7.0 and 28.9 ± 9.4; p < 0.001) and 3rd trimester (18.74 ± 8.4 and 28.2 ± 9.4; p < 0.01) compared to the values before pregnancy (16.4 ± 6.4 and 20 ± 7.5) and during 1st trimester (17.49 ± 6.5 and 22.4 ± 7.4). There was a stat. significant temporary reduction in RBC def. under all shear rate conditions during 2nd trimester compared to the values before pregnancy which remained significantly lower during 3rd trimester only under high shear rates.An increase RBC agg was stat. significantly inversely correlated with reduced RBC def being most pronounced under low shear rate conditions. While RBC rigidity was stat. significantly correlated with higher hematocrit values there was only a weak correlation between RBC agg and haematocrit (E0: r = -0.084; p = 0.03; E1: r = -0.06; p = 0.1). Pv was not correlated with haematocrit or RBC def but stat. significantly correlated with RBC agg. Blood rheological changes manifest during 1st trimester, and fairly remain unchanged during 2nd trimester until term. Physiologic hemodilution and increasing hypercoagulability is accompanied by high RBC -aggregation and - rigidity during 2nd trimester while plasma viscosity remains nearly unaffected throughout normal pregnancy.

Sex-dependent differences in rheological properties and the relation of blood viscosity to erythrocyte aggregation indices among morbidly obese patients

Some studies indicate that obesity is associated with rheological disturbances. Because there are usually sex differences in the type of obesity we decided to evaluate rheological differences between male and female obese patients. We studied 18 morbidly obese men, mean age 43.66 +/- 11.32 years, mean body mass index (BMI) 49.82 +/- 6.03 kg/m2 and 20 obese females, mean age 40.6 +/- 11.86 years, mean BMI 47.41 +/- 8.81 kg/m2. Blood and plasma viscosity measurements were performed using a cone-plate viscometer (Brookfield DV-II). Erythrocyte elongation and red blood cell (RBC) aggregation were measured using the Laser-assisted Optical Rotational Cell Analyser (LORCA). Whole blood viscosity and RBC deformability expressed by the elongation index were significantly higher in obese men. We did not observe differences in plasma viscosity, corrected blood viscosity and aggregation parameters among the obese population. Blood viscosity correlated with selected RBC aggregation indices. We conclude that morbidly obese patients presented sex-dependent differences in some rheological properties. This study indicates a relation between erythrocyte aggregation indices and blood viscosity in obese populations.

Effects of food and water withdrawal and high temperature exposure on diurnal variation in blood viscosity of broiler chickens

1. Three experiments were conducted to investigate the diurnal variation of blood viscosity in broilers. In experiment 1 food and water were supplied freely at 20C (20-FW). In experiment 2 food and water were withdrawn at 20C (20-NFW), while in experiment 3 food and water were withdrawn at 30C (30-NFW). 2. Blood sampling time points were 09.00 h, 15.00 h, 21.00 h, 03.00 h and 09.00 h the next day in each experiment. 3. In all experiments, whole blood viscosity (WBV), red blood cell count (RBC) and haematocrit (HCT) were greater during the dark (21.00 h and 03.00 h) than during the light period. During the dark period, there were no differences in WBV, RBC and HCT between 20-FW and 20-NFW, or between 20-NFW and 30-NFW. At 09.00 h, WBV and HCT were higher in 20-FW than in 20-NFW. At 15.00 h and 09.00 h (day 2), WBV and HCT were greater in 20-NFW than in 30-NFW. 4. There were no light-dark differences in plasma viscosity (PV), plasma protein concentration (PPC) or mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in any experiment. However, 20-NFW birds had a lower PPC and higher MCV compared with 20-FW, and a higher PPC and lower MCV compared with 30-NFW, while no difference was found in PV. 5. WBV increased linearly with RBC and HCT. PV increased with PPC, while MCV decreased. 6. These results indicate that there is diurnal variation in whole blood viscosity, which is greater during the dark than during the light period. During the light period it is strongly influenced by high environmental temperature and food and water withdrawal. C

Leisure-time physical activity but not work-related physical activity is associated with decreased plasma viscosity. Results from a large population sample.

Regular leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) is inversely associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). This has been mainly explained by its impact on traditional CHD risk factors, but more recently it was also shown to lower fibrinogen, which largely determines plasma viscosity. No data on the effect of work activity (WA) on plasma viscosity have been published. We studied the relationship between self-reported LTPA or WA and plasma viscosity as well as other CHD risk factors in 3522 men and women age 25 to 64 years. Physical activity was assessed by questionnaire. LTPA was inversely associated with plasma viscosity in both sexes. The unadjusted mean differences in plasma viscosity in men between no activity and the highest activity were 0.024 mPa.s (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.016 to 0.032 mPa.s, P < .001) during winter and 0.024 mPa.s (95% CI, 0.016 to 0.031 mPa.s, P < .001) during summer. After adjustment for age, cholesterol, smoking, blood pressure, body mass index, and years of education, mean differences decreased but still remained substantial and statistically significant (0.010 mPa.s; 95% CI, 0.003 to 0.018 mPa.s [P = .009] for winter activity; and 0.010 mPa.s; 95% CI, 0.002 to 0.017 mPa.s [P = .011] for summer activity). Similar results were found in women. WA showed no appreciable association with plasma viscosity after controlling for the covariates. LTPA is inversely associated with plasma viscosity, independent of other risk factors, whereas WA shows no material effect in men and women. Decreased plasma viscosity may represent one mechanism through which LTPA confers a decrease of CHD risk.

Hemorheology in occupational lead exposure

The purpose of this investigation was to study hemorheological parameters in occupationally lead exposed men. For 15 clinically healthy lead-exposed male subjects [age 34.6 (SD 8) years] the viscous (epsilon') and elastic (epsilon") components of whole blood viscosity corrected for 45% hematocrit were measured for shear rates between 1.s-1-100.s-1 at 37 degrees C. Moreover, lead concentrations in blood and urine and the delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase level were determined. Fifteen unexposed age-matched men were used as referents. The mean lead concentration in the blood and urine of the lead-exposed men was 48.7 (SD 16.2) micrograms. dl-1 and 38.8 (SD 17.1) micrograms.g creatinine-1, respectively. While epsilon" was significantly increased only at low shear rates, epsilon' was elevated throughout the investigated shear range in comparison with the values of the unexposed referents. These results are characteristic of erythrocytes with enhanced rigidity. The aggregation and filtration index of erythrocytes were significantly elevated for the lead-exposed workers. A positive correlation existed between lead in blood and epsilon' or epsilon", whereas delta -aminolevulinic acid dehydrase and epsilon' or epsilon" were inversely correlated. No differences in plasma viscosity or in lipid status could be detected. Increased blood lead concentrations can be considered an additional risk factor for vascular diseases predisposing towards microvascular occlusion.

Geographical variations in plasma viscosity and relation to coronary event rates

SummaryPlasma viscosity is reported to be predictive of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. To find out whether regional differences in CHD event rates correlate with differences in plasma viscosity, we compared plasma viscosity in a high-risk area for CHD (Glasgow Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease [MONICA] and Scottish Heart Health Study population surveys, 1985/86; n=1166) and in a lower-risk area (MONICA Augsburg survey, 1984/85; n=3258) in men and women aged 25-64 years. Mean plasma viscosity (37°C) was 1·261 (SD 0·067) mPa s in Augsburg and 1·327 (0·093) mPa s in the west of Scotland for men, and 1·248 (0·066) mPa s and 1 318 (0·087) mPa s, respectively, for women. The unadjusted difference of the means between the west of Scotland and Augsburg was 0·066 (95% Cl from weighted regression 0·058-0 073) mPa s for men and 0·070 (0·062-0·078) mPa s for women. Adjustment for age, smoking behaviour, total and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and body-mass index had no effect on these differences. Age-standardised coronary event rates in 1985-87 were at least two times higher among men, and four times higher among women, in MONICA Glasgow than in MONICA Augsburg.This large geographical difference in plasma viscosity might partly explain the differences in CHD event rates between these populations. Further studies are needed on the determinants of plasma viscosity, and on its potential roles in atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and ischaemia.

Correlation between hemorheological parameters and viscoelasticity of thrombus in rats after exposure to carbon monoxide

ABSTRACl' A three -week investigation was ranied out on hemorheological and. coagulative indices in rats exposed to carbon monoxide (CO). Results showed that in CO group, clotting times (tG ., tG') were prolooged with lowered viscous modulus and. e1astic modulus G' of thrombus at thirty minute coagulation as well as platelet count (BP). However, hematocrit (Ret) and. blood viscosity in this group were significantly increased. No difference in plasma viscosity (PV> was found between two groups. A correlation was established for the parameters, namely, G' =173. 6 +100. 3PV -5.lHct--6.6tG' . On the contrary, no alteration in Hct, G • , G'. platelet aggregation activity, clotting time of plasma was found for blood exposed to CO in vitro. But it confirmed there was a strong negative correlation between Hct and (r=-O.938) , and. G' (r=-O.974) respectively. These results suggest that. (1) Carbon monoxide does not directly result in changes in thrombotic activity, but it can stimulate the growth of red blood cell by hypoxemia, (2) High Hct is responsible for the reduction of and. G I in CO group.

Clinical significance of hemorrheological parameters in patients with renal transplantation.

Hemorrheological studies carried out on 14 recipients of cadaveric kidney transplant regularly before and after transplantation showed very significant differences in plasma viscosity in the period of stable function after successfully transplanted kidney, dialysis before transplantation, and renal rejection (P less than 0.001). Significant difference was observed in fibrinogen level in cases with stable normal function and rejection (P less than 0.05). Significant positive correlation was found between plasma viscosity and fibrinogen level in patients on dialysis as well as after transplantation. The results in this series showed that abnormal changes in hemorrheology respond to the development of rejection episode and deterioration of renal function in patients after receiving cadaveric renal allografts.

Changes in Blood Rheology Produced by Exercise

<h3>To the Editor.—</h3> The recent Olympic issue ofThe Journalwhich focused on cardiovascular and medical aspects of exercise provided information of unique value. Briefly, it wassuggested that different forms of training are associated with favorable changes in lipoprotein patterns'^1,2and that exercise level predicts cardiovascular risk.^3,4Our own group has investigated the effects of exercise on blood rheology. We studied a group of first-league soccer players, comparing them with age-matched sedentary persons (Table 1). We observed hemorrheological changes during a three-month vigorous training program (mean, four hours intensive exercise per day, seven days a week) in formerly sedentary volunteers (Table 2). The variables tested were blood and plasma viscosity,^5,6hematocrit red cell deformability,⁷and red cell aggregation.
