Prefrontal cortical activity during uneven terrain walking in younger and older adults.

Walking in complex environments increases the cognitive demand of locomotor control; however, our understanding of the neural mechanisms contributing to walking on uneven terrain is limited. We used a novel method for altering terrain unevenness on a treadmill to investigate the association between terrain unevenness and cortical activity in the prefrontal cortex, a region known to be involved in various cognitive functions. Prefrontal cortical activity was measured with functional near infrared spectroscopy while participants walked on a novel custom-made terrain treadmill surface across four different terrains: flat, low, medium, and high levels of unevenness. The assessments were conducted in younger adults, older adults with better mobility function and older adults with worse mobility function. Mobility function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery. The primary hypothesis was that increasing the unevenness of the terrain would result in greater prefrontal cortical activation in all groups. Secondary hypotheses were that heightened prefrontal cortical activation would be observed in the older groups relative to the younger group, and that prefrontal cortical activation would plateau at higher levels of terrain unevenness for the older adults with worse mobility function, as predicted by the Compensation Related Utilization of Neural Circuits Hypothesis. The results revealed a significant main effect of terrain, indicating a significant increase in prefrontal cortical activation with increasing terrain unevenness during walking in all groups. A significant main effect of group revealed that prefrontal cortical activation was higher in older adults with better mobility function compared to younger adults and older adults with worse mobility function in all pooled terrains, but there was no significant difference in prefrontal cortical activation between older adults with worse mobility function and younger adults. Contrary to our hypothesis, the older group with better mobility function displayed a sustained increase in activation but the other groups did not, suggestive of neural compensation. Additional findings were that task-related increases in prefrontal cortical activation during walking were lateralized to the right hemisphere in older adults with better mobility function but were bilateral in older adults with worse mobility function and younger adults. These findings support that compared to walking on a flat surface, walking on uneven terrain surfaces increases demand on cognitive control resources as measured by prefrontal cortical activation.

Patients with chronic ankle instability exhibit increased sensorimotor cortex activation and correlation with poorer lateral balance control ability during single-leg stance: a FNIRS study.

Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) is a musculoskeletal condition that evolves from acute ankle sprains, and its underlying mechanisms have yet to reach a consensus. Mounting evidence suggests that neuroplastic changes in the brain following ankle injuries play a pivotal role in the development of CAI. Balance deficits are a significant risk factor associated with CAI, yet there is a scarcity of evidence regarding the sensorimotor cortical plasticity related to balance control in affected individuals. This study aims to evaluate the differences in cortical activity and balance abilities between patients with CAI and uninjured individuals during a single-leg stance, as well as the correlation between these factors, in order to elucidate the neurophysiological alterations in balance control among patients with CAI. The study enrolled 24 patients with CAI and 24 uninjured participants. During single-leg stance, cortical activity was measured using a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system, which included assessments of the pre-motor cortex (PMC), supplementary motor area (SMA), primary motor cortex (M1), and primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Concurrently, balance parameters were tested utilizing a three-dimensional force platform. Independent sample t-tests revealed that, compared with the uninjured individuals, the patients with CAI exhibited a significant increase in the changes of oxyhemoglobin concentration (ΔHbO) during single-leg stance within the left S1 at Channel 5 (t = 2.101, p = 0.041, Cohen's d = 0.607), left M1 at Channel 6 (t = 2.363, p = 0.022, Cohen's d = 0.682), right M1 at Channel 15 (t = 2.273, p = 0.029, Cohen's d = 0.656), and right PMC/SMA at Channel 11 (t = 2.467, p = 0.018, Cohen's d = 0.712). Additionally, the center of pressure root mean square (COP-RMS) in the mediolateral (ML) direction was significantly greater (t = 2.630, p = 0.012, Cohen's d = 0.759) in the patients with CAI. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation was found between ML direction COP-RMS and ΔHbO2 in the M1 (r = 0.436; p = 0.033) and PMC/SMA (r = 0.488, p = 0.016), as well as between anteroposterior (AP) direction COP-RMS and ΔHbO in the M1 (r = 0.483, p = 0.017). Patients with CAI demonstrate increased cortical activation in the bilateral M1, ipsilateral PMC/SMA, and contralateral S1. This suggests that patients with CAI may require additional brain resources to maintain balance during single-leg stance, representing a compensatory mechanism to uphold task performance amidst diminished lateral balance ability in the ankle joint.

Anxiety symptoms without depression are associated with cognitive control network (CNN) dysfunction: An fNIRS study.

Anxiety is a common psychological disorder associated with other mental disorders, with depression being the most common comorbidity. Few studies have examined the neural mechanisms underlying anxiety after controlling for depression. This study aimed to explore whether there are differences in cortical activation in anxiety patients with different severities whose depression are normal. In the current study, depression levels were normal for 366 subjects-139 healthy subjects, 117 with mild anxiety, and 110 with major anxiety. Using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and a verbal fluency task (VFT) to test subjects' anxiety and depression and cognitive function, respectively. A 53-channel guided near-infrared spectroscopic imaging technology (fNIRS) detected the concentration of oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb). Correlation analysis between anxiety severity and oxy-Hb concentration in the brain cortex was performed, as well as ANOVA analysis of oxy-Hb concentration among the three anxiety severity groups. The results showed that anxiety severity was significantly and negatively correlated with oxy-Hb concentrations in the left frontal eye field (lFEF) and in the right dorsolateral prefrontal area (rDLPFC). The oxy-Hb concentration in the lFEF and the rDLPFC were significantly lower in the major anxiety disorder group than that in the control group. This suggests that decreased cortical activity of the lFEF and rDLPFC may be neural markers of anxiety symptoms after controlling for depression. Anxiety symptoms without depression may be result from the dysfunction of the cognitive control network (CCN) which includes the lFEF and rDLPFC.

FNIRS is capable of distinguishing laterality of lower body contractions.

The use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for brain imaging during human movement continues to increase. This technology measures brain activity non-invasively using near-infrared light, is highly portable, and robust to motion artifact. However, the spatial resolution of fNIRS is lower than that of other imaging modalities. It is unclear whether fNIRS has sufficient spatial resolution to differentiate nearby areas of the cortex, such as the leg areas of the motor cortex. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine fNIRS' ability to discern laterality of lower body contractions. Activity in the primary motor cortex was recorded in forty participants (mean = 23.4years, SD = 4.5, female = 23, male = 17) while performing unilateral lower body contractions. Contractions were performed at 30% of maximal force against a handheld dynamometer. These contractions included knee extension, knee flexion, dorsiflexion, and plantar flexion of the left and right legs. fNIRS signals were recorded and stored for offline processing and analysis. Channels of fNIRS data were grouped into regions of interest, with five tolerance conditions ranging from strict to lenient. Four of five tolerance conditions resulted in significant differences in cortical activation between hemispheres. During right leg contractions, the left hemisphere was more active than the right hemisphere. Similarly, during left leg contractions, the right hemisphere was more active than the left hemisphere. These results suggest that fNIRS has sufficient spatial resolution to distinguish laterality of lower body contractions. This makes fNIRS an attractive technology in research and clinical applications in which laterality of brain activity is required during lower body activity.

A comprehensive characterization of cognitive performance, clinical symptoms, and cortical activity following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)

Objective The objective of this study was to investigate clinical symptoms, cognitive performance and cortical activity following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Methods We recruited 30 individuals in the sub-acute phase post mTBI and 28 healthy controls with no history of head injury and compared these groups on clinical, cognitive and cortical activity measures. Measures of cortical activity included; resting state electroencephalography (EEG), task related EEG and combined transcranial magnetic stimulation with electroencephalography (TMS-EEG). Primary analyses investigated clinical, cognitive and cortical activity differences between groups. Exploratory analyses investigated the relationships between these measures. Results At 4 weeks’ post injury, mTBI participants exhibited significantly greater post concussive and clinical symptoms compared to controls; as well as reduced cognitive performance on verbal learning and working memory measures. mTBI participants demonstrated alterations in cortical activity while at rest and in response to stimulation with TMS. Conclusions The present study comprehensively characterized the multidimensional effect of mTBI in the sub-acute phase post injury, showing a broad range of differences compared to non-mTBI participants. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between these pathophysiologies and clinical/cognitive symptoms in mTBI.

High-skilled first-person shooting game players have specific frontal lobe activity: Power spectrum analysis in an electroencephalogram study

First-person shooting (FPS) games are among the most famous video games worldwide. However, cortical activities in environments related to real FPS games have not been studied. This study aimed to determine differences in cortical activity between low- and high-skilled FPS game players using 160-channel electroencephalography. Nine high-skilled FPS game players (official ranks: above the top 10%) and eight low-skilled FPS game players (official ranks: lower than the top 20%) were recruited for the experiment. The task was set for five different conditions using the AimLab program, which was used for the FPS game players’ training. Additionally, we recorded the brain activity in the resting condition before and after the task, in which the participants closed their eyes and relaxed. The reaction time and accuracy (the number of hit-and-miss targets) were calculated to evaluate the task performance. The results showed that high-skilled FPS game players have fast reaction times and high accuracy during tasks. High-skilled FPS game players had higher cortical activity in the frontal cortex than low-skilled FPS game players during each task. In low-skilled players, cortical activity level and performance level were associated. These results suggest that high cortical activity levels were critical to achieving high performance in FPS games.

Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Bi-Hemispheric Stimulation on Fine Motor Activity of the Hand in Healthy Adults

Background: Evidence states that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can alter cortical excitability (Cathodal stimulation hyperpolarizes, while anodal stimulation excites). This study compares bihemispheric tDCS to sham stimulation on fine motor activity in healthy adults. Methods: 24 healthy 18-30-year subjects were recruited at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India, and split into experimental (tDCS bihemispheric stimulation) and control (sham) groups. The O'Connor Finger Dexterity Test (OCFDT) and Purdue Pegboard Test (PPBT) results were analysed for hand dexterity before and after stimulation. Results: Variables like age, height, weight, and BMI of the groups were taken. Significance of differences in Intra- and inter-group hand function dexterity tests (OCFDT, PPBT) test results were done, and a p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Conclusion: The study found significant intra-group pre and post-differences in all components of OCFDT and assembly components of PPBT, but inter-group differences in other components of PPBT and OCFDT were insignificant. Results found were limited as tDCS can only stimulate the superficial cortex. In addition, the results in the sham group attributed to some amount of superficial stimulation in sham stimulation. Further research is needed to know the extent of stimulation effects and training effects to understand cortical activity differences in bi-hemispheric and sham stimulation, initial cognitive competence, motor planning, task practice, fine motor function feedback, intensity, electrode size, duration, number of sessions, stimulation site on tDCS effects. Electrophysiological correlates of the emotional response on brain activity in adolescents

Many studies have attempted to analyze the main neurophysiological characteristics of emotional response, but few have been carried out at early ages, including adolescence or early adulthood. The main objective of the present study is to assess the electrophysiological correlates of emotional response in adolescents and young adults through electroencephalography (EEG) measures. Sample, composed of 25 subjects (18.44 ± 0.71 years old), were exposed to different sequences of images belonging to the IAPS, which were selected following the dimensional model, based on their valence and arousal, while their neural activity was evaluated through EEG. Results indicated differences in cortical neural activity in response to the valence of the images and the level of arousal. Specifically, we observed that exposure to positive images (high valence) with high arousal produced an increase in alpha, beta, and delta wave activity but not in theta activity. In the case of positive images with low arousal, however, the results indicated an increase in beta waves only and a decrease in alpha, delta, and theta activity. For negative images (low valence) with high arousal, an increase in alpha, beta, and delta waves but not in theta was observed, while negative images with low arousal induced an increase in beta, delta, and theta wave response. This study demonstrates that activated cortical areas indicated significant differences based on the different emotional responses in adolescents and young adults.

Motor Processing in Children With Cochlear Implants as Assessed by Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Auditory-motor and visual-motor networks are often coupled in daily activities, such as when listening to music and dancing; but these networks are known to be highly malleable as a function of sensory input. Thus, congenital deafness may modify neural activities within the connections between the motor, auditory, and visual cortices. Here, we investigated whether the cortical responses of children with cochlear implants (CI) to a simple and repetitive motor task would differ from that of children with typical hearing (TH) and we sought to understand whether this response related to their language development. Participants were 75 school-aged children, including 50 with CI (with varying language abilities) and 25 controls with TH. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to record cortical responses over the whole brain, as children squeezed the back triggers of a joystick that vibrated or not with the squeeze. Motor cortex activity was reflected by an increase in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration (HbO) and a decrease in deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration (HbR) in all children, irrespective of their hearing status. Unexpectedly, the visual cortex (supposedly an irrelevant region) was deactivated in this task, particularly for children with CI who had good language skills when compared to those with CI who had language delays. Presence or absence of vibrotactile feedback made no difference in cortical activation. These findings support the potential of fNIRS to examine cognitive functions related to language in children with CI.

Differences in Cortical Activation During Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion in Chronic Ankle Instability: A Task-fMRI Study.

Chronic ankle instability is a common sports injury that often presents with increased plantarflexion and restricted dorsiflexion. The cumulative effect of peripheral injuries may induce neuroplasticity in the central nervous system. However, the relationship between dorsiflexion or plantarflexion and the central nervous system in patients with chronic ankle instability remains unknown. (1) Is there a difference in region and voxel (volume pixel) of cortical activation during plantarflexion and dorsiflexion between patients with chronic ankle instability and a control group with normal ankle function? (2) Is there a correlation between activation of sensorimotor-related brain regions and three clinical measurement scales of ankle function and disease severity in patients with chronic ankle instability? Between December 2020 and May 2022, we treated 400 patients who had chronic ankle instability. Ten percent (40 patients; mean ± standard deviation age 29 ± 7 years; 17 male patients) were randomly selected to participate in this study. We recruited 42 volunteers with normal ankle function (mean age 28 ± 5 years; 21 male participants) matched by age and education level. A total of 2.5% (1 of 40) of patients with bilateral chronic ankle instability and 30% (12 of 40) with left-sided chronic ankle injury did not meet our inclusion criteria and were excluded from the study. The control group underwent MRI with good image quality. Finally, 27 patients with chronic ankle instability (mean age 26 ± 5 years; 10 male patients) and 42 participants with normal ankle function were enrolled. Ankle function and disease severity were assessed using three clinical scales: the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool, Karlsson-Peterson Ankle Function Score, and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score. A uniplanar and nonweightbearing ankle dorsiflexion-plantarflexion paradigm (a recognized model or pattern) was performed using a short-block design during the functional MRI scan. This experimental design included a series of on-off periods consisting of movement and a rest period. From 15° of plantarflexion to 15° of dorsiflexion, the manipulator allowed 30° of ankle rotation. The cerebral excitability patterns between patients with chronic ankle instability and controls were analyzed using t-tests. We retained voxels with p values less than 0.05 in a voxel-level family-wise error correction. Clusters with voxel numbers greater than 10 were retained. The Cohen d coefficient was used to calculate between-group effect sizes. Spearman analysis was performed to explore the correlation between activation regions and the three clinical assessment scales. In the patient group, cortical activation was greater during plantarflexion than during dorsiflexion, which was different from that in the control group. The between-group comparison showed that patients with chronic ankle instability had reduced activation in the ipsilateral precuneus (cluster size = 35 voxels [95% CI -0.23 to 0.07]; p < 0.001) during dorsiflexion, whereas during plantarflexion, chronic ankle instability caused increased activation in the ipsilateral superior temporal gyrus (cluster size = 90 voxels [95% CI -0.73 to -0.13]; p < 0.001), precuneus (cluster size = 18 voxels [95% CI -0.56 to -0.19]; p < 0.001), supplementary motor area (cluster size = 57 voxels [95% CI -0.31 to 0.00]; p < 0.001), superior frontal gyrus (cluster size = 43 voxels [95% CI -0.82 to -0.29]; p < 0.001), medial part of the superior frontal gyrus (cluster size = 39 voxels [95% CI 0.41 to 0.78]; p < 0.001), and contralateral postcentral gyrus (cluster size = 100 voxels [95% CI -0.32 to 0.02]; p < 0.001). Patients with chronic ankle instability showed a large effect size compared with controls (Cohen d > 0.8). During plantarflexion, the number of activated voxels in the supplementary motor area had a modest, positive correlation with the Karlsson-Peterson Ankle Function Score (r = 0.52; p = 0.01), and the number of activated voxels in the primary motor cortex (M1) and primary sensory cortex (S1) had a weak, positive correlation with the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score in patients with chronic ankle instability (M1: r = 0.45; p = 0.02, S1: r = 0.49; p = 0.01). Compared with volunteers with normal ankle function, patients with chronic ankle instability had increased cortical activation during plantarflexion and decreased cortical activation during dorsiflexion. We analyzed the central neural mechanisms of chronic ankle instability in patients with sports injuries and provided a theoretical basis for the development of new central and peripheral interventions in the future. Because there was a positive correlation between the neural activity in sensorimotor-related regions during plantarflexion and clinical severity, clinicians might one day be able to help patients who have chronic ankle instability with neuromuscular rehabilitation by applying electrical stimulation to specific targets (such as S1M1 and the supplementary motor area) or by increasing activation of sensorimotor neurons through ankle movement.

Electroacupuncture at HT5 + GB20 produces stronger activation effect on swallowing cortex and muscle than single points

IntroductionThis study aimed to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture on cortical activation and swallowing muscle groups. The study examined brain activation in healthy subjects performing swallowing tasks during electroacupuncture. Additionally, the study analyzed electromyographic signals of swallowing muscle groups after electroacupuncture. MethodsTwenty-seven healthy subjects were randomly separated into three groups. They underwent electroacupuncture at HT5 acupoint (HT5 group), or GB20 acupoint (GB20 group), or HT5 + GB20 acupoint (HT5 + GB20 group) for 30 min of intervention. Subjects performed a swallowing task while receiving electroacupuncture. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to detect cortical activation and functional connectivity (FC). The mean amplitude values of the swallowing muscle groups after electroacupuncture were also measured. Statistical analysis was used to investigate the differences between the three groups. The protocol was registered with the China Clinical Trials Registry with the registration number ChiCTR2300067457. ResultsCompared with the HT5 group, the HT5 + GB20 group showed higher cortical activation in the LM1 (t = 2.842, P < 0.05) and a tighter FC in the RM1 and LM1 (t = 2.4629, P < 0.05) with considerably increased mean amplitude values of the swallowing muscle groups (t = 5.2474, P < 0.0001). Increased FC was found in the HT5 + GB20 group compared to the GB20 group between the RM1 and RS1 (t = 2.9997, P < 0.01), RM1 and RPM (t = 2.2116, P < 0.05), RM1 and LM1 (t = 3.2078, P < 0.01), RPM and LM1 (t = 2.7440, P < 0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in cortical activation or mean amplitude values of swallowing muscle groups. ConclusionThis study showed that electroacupuncture at HT5 + GB20 acupoints particularly engaged the cerebral cortex related to swallowing, resulting in tighter functional connectivity and higher amplitude values of swallowing muscle groups than electroacupuncture at single acupoints. The results may reveal the mechanism of electroacupuncture for post-stroke swallowing dysphagia.

Cortical activity and spatiotemporal parameters during gait termination and walking: A preliminary study

Gait termination requires an interaction between the biomechanical and neuromuscular systems to arrest forward momentum. Currently, the biomechanical characteristics of gait termination have been demonstrated; however, the neural mechanism of gait termination remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate cortical activity during gait termination using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Thirteen healthy younger adults (mean age:24.0 ± 1.7) participated in this study. All participants performed three experimental sessions: planned gait termination (PGT), unplanned gait termination (UGT), and walking. Each experimental session comprised a block paradigm design (three cycles; 20 s resting, 45 s task). Cortical activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), supplementary motor area (SMA), and primary motor cortex (M1) and spatiotemporal parameters were measured. We compared the cortical activities and spatiotemporal parameters among PGT, UGT, and walking sessions. In addition, we performed Pearson correlations between hemodynamic responses and spatiotemporal parameters. The PGT was activated in the right DLPFC, whereas the UGT and walking were activated in the left SMA (p < 0.05). Comparing cortical activation between sessions, both the PGT and UGT showed significantly higher activation in the right DLPFC than during walking (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in cortical activity between PGT and UGT (p > 0.05). In addition, the gait termination time revealed moderate positive correlation with hemodynamic responses in the right DLPFC (p < 0.05). Our results indicate that the right DLPFC is associated with gait termination, regardless of gait termination type. Our findings provide the potential implication that the hemodynamic response in the right DLPFC would be a biomarker to evaluate the ability of gait termination.

Autism-Related Differences in Cortical Activation When Observing, Producing, and Imitating Communicative Gestures: An fNIRS Study.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties in gestural communication during social interactions. However, the neural mechanisms involved in naturalistic gestural communication remain poorly understood. In this study, cortical activation patterns associated with gestural communication were examined in thirty-two children with and without ASD (mean age: 11.0 years, SE: 0.6 years). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to record cortical activation while children produced, observed, or imitated communicative gestures. Children with ASD demonstrated more spatial and temporal errors when performing and imitating communicative gestures. Although both typically developing (TD) children and children with ASD showed left-lateralized cortical activation during gesture production, children with ASD showed hyperactivation in the middle/inferior frontal gyrus (MIFG) during observation and imitation, and hypoactivation in the middle/superior temporal gyrus (MSTG) during gesture production compared to their TD peers. More importantly, children with ASD exhibited greater MSTG activation during imitation than during gesture production, suggesting that imitation could be an effective intervention strategy to engage cortical regions crucial for processing and producing gestures. Our study provides valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying gestural communication difficulties in ASD, while also identifying potential neurobiomarkers that could serve as objective measures for evaluating intervention effectiveness in children with ASD.

Brain-based medical education model for expert's clinical decision making.

The expertise of medicians in clinical decision-making is very important since it improves the quality of medical services provided to patients. This study analyzed the characteristics of the decision-making process and confirmed clinicians' electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics by measuring their cerebral activity during clinical decision-making. This study aims to present learning directions for brain-based clinical decision-making to develop medical experts. This study was performed in the following two projects: (1) a qualitative study of clinical decision-making in a clinical scenario and (2) an analysis of differences in cortical activity of experts and novices through EEG. In the 1st study, this study found that "confirmation of the patient's chief complaints," "physical examination," and "radiography reading" steps, which showed the most prominent differences in the experts' and novices' decision making, were set as the significant steps of dentists' clinical decision making. In the 2nd study, the experts' and novices' cortical activities were measured through a 32-channel EEG. In task 6, which had the lowest accuracy of diagnoses made by the experts, the brain activities in both groups were higher than in other tasks. This study developed and suggested a model of the decision-making process for experts and novices and suggested the basic directions for brain-based learning needed to raise experts based on brain activity.

Friction and neuroimaging of active and passive tactile touch

Two types of exploratory touch including active sliding and passive sliding are usually encountered in the daily life. The friction behavior of the human finger against the surface of objects is important in tactile perception. The neural mechanisms correlating to tribological behavior are not fully understood. This study investigated the tactile response of active and passive finger friction characterized with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The friction test and fNIRS test were performed simultaneously using the tactile stimulus of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) specimens. Results showed that the sliding modes did not obviously influence the friction property of skin. While three cortex regions were activated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), showing a higher activation level of passive sliding. This revealed that the tribological performance was not a simple parameter to affect tactile perception, and the difference in cortical hemodynamic activity of active and passive touch was also recognised. The movement-related blood flow changes revealed the role of PFC in integrating tactile sensation although there was no estimation task on roughness perception.

Moderating effects of self-perceived knowledge in a relevance assessment task: An EEG study

Relevance assessment, a crucial Human-computer Information Retrieval (HCIR) aspect, denotes how well retrieved information meets the user's information need (IN). Recently, user-centred research benefited from the employment of brain imaging, which contributed to our understanding of relevance assessment and associated cognitive processes. However, the effect of contextual aspects, such as the searcher's self-perceived knowledge (SPK) on relevance assessment and its underlying neurocognitive processes, has not been studied. This work investigates the impact of users' SPK about a topic (i.e. ‘knowledgeable’ vs. ‘not knowledgeable’) on relevance assessments (i.e. ‘relevant’ vs. ‘non-relevant’). To do so, using electroencephalography (EEG), we measured the neural activity of twenty-five participants while they provided relevance assessments during the Question and Answering (Q/A) Task. In the analysis, we considered the effects of SPK and specifically how it modulates the brain activity underpinning relevance judgements. Data-driven analysis revealed significant differences in cortical electrical activity modulated by searchers' SPK in the context of relevance assessment, suggesting that SPK affects cognitive processes associated with attention, semantic integration and categorisation, memory, and decision formation that underpin relevance assessment formation. Our findings are an important step toward a better understanding of the role users' SPK plays during relevance assessment.

Divergent auditory activation in relation to inhibition task performance in children and adults.

Adults and children show remarkable differences in cortical auditory activation which, in children, have shown relevance for cognitive performance, specifically inhibitory control. However, it has not been tested whether these differences translate to functional differences in response inhibition between adults and children. We recorded auditory responses of adults and school-aged children (6-14 years) using combined magneto- and electroencephalography (M/EEG) during passive listening conditions and an auditory Go/No-go task. The associations between auditory cortical responses and inhibition performance measures diverge between adults and children; while in children the brain-behavior associations are not significant, or stronger responses are beneficial, adults show negative associations between auditory cortical responses and inhibitory performance. Furthermore, we found differences in brain responses between adults and children; the late (~200 ms post stimulation) adult peak activation shifts from auditory to frontomedial areas. In contrast, children show prolonged obligatory responses in the auditory cortex. Together this likely translates to a functional difference between adults and children in the cortical resources for performance consistency in auditory-based cognitive tasks.

Aberrant age-related alterations in spontaneous cortical activity in participants with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common neurodevelopmental motor disability, resulting in life-long sensory, perception and motor impairments. Moreover, these impairments appear to drastically worsen as the population with CP transitions from adolescents to adulthood, although the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. We began to address this knowledge gap by utilizing magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain imaging to study how the amplitude of spontaneous cortical activity (i.e., resting state) is altered during this transition period in a cohort of 38 individuals with spastic diplegic CP (Age range = 9.80-47.50 years, 20 females) and 67 neurotypical controls (NT) (Age range = 9.08-49.40 years, Females = 27). MEG data from a five-minute eyes closed resting-state paradigm were source imaged, and the power within the delta (2-4 Hz), theta (5-7 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (15-29 Hz), and gamma (30-59 Hz) frequency bands were computed. For both groups, the delta and theta spontaneous power decreased in the bilateral temporoparietal and superior parietal regions with age, while alpha, beta, and gamma band spontaneous power increased in temporoparietal, frontoparietal and premotor regions with age. We also found a significant group x age interaction, such that participants with CP demonstrated significantly less age-related increases in the spontaneous beta activity in the bilateral sensorimotor cortices compared to NT controls. Overall, these results demonstrate that the spontaneous neural activity in individuals with CP has an altered trajectory when transitioning from adolescents to adulthood. We suggest that these differences in spontaneous cortical activity may play a critical role in the aberrant motor actions seen in this patient group, and may provide a neurophysiological marker for assessing the effectiveness of current treatment strategies that are directed at improving the mobility and sensorimotor impairments seen in individuals with CP.

Hemodynamic signal changes and functional connectivity in acute stroke patients with dysphagia during volitional swallowing: a pilot study.

Dysphagia is one of the major post-stroke complications, understanding post-stroke changes in cortical excitability and promoting early remodeling of swallowing-related cortical areas to enable accurate treatment is essential for recovery of patients. We aimed to investigate hemodynamic signal changes and functional connectivity in acute stroke patients with dysphagia compared to age-matched healthy participants in response to volitional swallowing using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in this pilot study. Patients with first-ever post-stroke dysphagia having an onset of 1-4 weeks and age-matched right-handed healthy subjects were recruited in our study. fNIRS with 47 channels was utilized to detect the oxyhemoglobin (HbO2 ) and reduced hemoglobin (HbR) concentration changes when volitional swallowing. Cohort analysis was performed by a one-sample t-test. Two-sample t-test was utilized to compare the difference in cortical activation between patients with post-stroke dysphagia and healthy subjects. Furthermore, the relative changes in the concentration of the HbO2 throughout the experimental procedure were extracted for the functional connectivity analysis. The Pearson correlation coefficients of the HbO2 concentration of each channel were analyzed on a time series, and then a Fisher Z transformation was then performed, and the transformed values were defined as the functional connection strengths between the channels. In this present study, a total of nine patients with acute post-stroke dysphagia were enrolled in the patient group and nine age-matched healthy participants in the healthy control group. Our study observed that the extensive regions of the cerebral cortex were activated in the healthy control group, while the activation area of patient group's cortical regions was quite limited. The mean functional connectivity strength of participants was 0.485 ± 0.105 in the healthy control group, and 0.252 ± 0.146 in the patient group, with a significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.001). Compared to the healthy individuals, cerebral cortex regions of acute stroke patients were only marginally activated during volitional swallowing task, and the average functional connectivity strength of cortical network in patients was relatively weaker.
