Conductive Aramid Fibers from Electroless Silver Plating of Crosslinked HPAMAM-Modified PPTA: Preparation and Properties.

Conductive aramid (PPTA) fibers are highly needed for making flexible conductive materials, antistatic materials, and electromagnetic shielding materials. In this work, silver-plated conductive PPTA fibers with high conductivity and excellent mechanical properties were prepared by the electroless plating of PPTA fibers modified with crosslinked hyperbranched polyamide-amine (HPAMAM). The crosslinked HPAMAM creates a stable interface between the PPTA fibers and the silver plating. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the modified and the silver-plated fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Three epoxy crosslinking agents with different chain lengths were used to crosslink HPAMAM, and the effects of HPAMAM concentration, crosslinking agent dosage, and crosslinking time on the resistance of the fibers were studied. The long chain crosslinking agent appears to be beneficial to silver plating. The lowest resistance (0.067 Ω/cm) was attained when HPAMAM was modified by diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (1:1 molar ratio), and 20 g/L HPAMAM was used to modify the PPTA fibers. The tensile strength of the original PPTA fibers decreased by only 3% or less after silver plating.

Mussel-Inspired Polymeric Coatings to Realize Functions from Single and Dual to Multiple Antimicrobial Mechanisms.

Numerous efforts to fabricate antimicrobial surfaces by simple yet universal protocols with high efficiency have attracted considerable interest but proved to be particularly challenging. Herein, we designed and fabricated a series of antimicrobial polymeric coatings with different functions from single to multiple mechanisms by selectively utilizing diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE), polylysine, and poly[glycidylmethacrylate-co-3-(dimethyl(4-vinylbenzyl)ammonium)propyl sulfonate] (poly(GMA-co-DVBAPS)) via straightforward mussel-inspired codeposition techniques. Bactericidal polylysine endowed the modified surfaces with a high ability (∼90%) to kill attached bacteria, while PEGDGE components with unique surface hydration prevented bacterial adhesion, avoiding the initial biofilm formation. Moreover, excellent salt-responsive poly(GMA-co-DVBAPS) enabled reactant polymeric coatings to change chain conformations from shrinkable to stretchable state and subsequently release >90% attached bacteria when treated with NaCl solution, even after repeated cycles. Therefore, the obtained polymeric coatings, polydopamine/poly(GMA-co-DVBAPS) (PDA/PDV), polydopamine/polylysine/poly(GMA-co-DVBAPS) (PDA/l-PDV), and polydopamine/polylysine/poly(GMA-co-DVBAPS)/diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PDA/l-PDV-PEGDGE), controllably realized functions from single and dual to multiple antimicrobial mechanisms, as evidenced by long-term antifouling activity to bacteria, high bactericidal efficiency, and salt-responsive bacterial regeneration performance with several bacterial killing-release cycles. This study not only contributes to mussel-inspired chemistry for polymeric coatings with controllable functions but also provides a series of reliable and highly efficient antimicrobial surfaces for potential biomedical applications.

Биолюминесцентный анализ токсичности сорбентов на основе полиэтиленимина

The toxicity of polyethylenimine-based sorbents and their extracts was evaluated and their effect on the bioluminescence of Photobacterium phosphoreum photobacteria was studied. These test bacteria are commonly used as objects to determine the toxicity of various materials. The analyzed materials were synthesized by cross-linking PEI with diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DGDE) at mass contents of the latter of 1.9-120.0% with subsequent freezing. It was found that the degree of luminescence inhibition in the P. phosphoreum cells depended on the PEI/DGDE ratio in the sorbent. The sorbents with high DGDE content (60-120%) did not affect the cell luminescence activity, while those with a lower percentage of the cross-linker (0.9-30%) exerted a pronounced inhibitory effect on luminescence of photobacteria according to the data obtained via the standard biotesting method. It was also established that the inhibitory effect of sorbents with a lower DGDE percentage (<30%) in a phosphate buffer was significantly lower than in salt solutions. Water and ethanol extracts of sorbents with the DGDE mass percentage of more than 15% did not significantly inhibit the luminescence of P. phosphoreum during 1 h of incubation. New Polyethylenimine-Based Polycationic Polymers with Plant Additives for Immobilizing Phototrophic Microorganisms

The immobilization of the microalgae (MA) of cells on biosorbents based on polyethyleneimine and cellulose-containing plant components is studied. Polyethyleneimine-based polycationic polymers have a high level of affinity for the surface structures of the MA and ensure that the cells are strongly attached to the surface of the sorbent. The introduction of plant fillers in the composition of such polymers allows us to increase their biodegradation rate and reduce costs. In the present study, six insoluble porous polymeric materials obtained by the cryopolymerization of a mixture of polyethyleneimine and various plant components using diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether were synthesized. The lyophilized biomass of plant cell cultures of Ajuga turkestanica and Polyscias fruticosa, as well as the cell-structured material (CSM) obtained from their biomass, is used as a bio-filler. Studying the kinetics and evaluating the efficiency of the immobilization of cells of the model MA culture showed the high sorption ability of the obtained materials: after 24 h of cultivation, the efficiency of immobilization was 72–77%. Assessment of the level of the photosynthetic activity of the MA cells using the method of pulse-simulated fluorimetry demonstrated that the studied biosorbents did not have any toxic effect on the cells and did not affect their functional activity. Novel biosorbents can be effectively used to collect the biomass of microorganisms from natural aquatic environments and industrial cultivators.

Study of Radiation-Chemical Structuring of Compositions Based on Epoxy Oligomers

The processes of radiation-chemical structuring of modified epoxy acrylic compositions were studied depending on the nature of epoxy oligomers and modifiers. ED-20 and ED-22 grades epoxy oligomers were chosen as epoxidian oligomers; 3,4-epoxyhexahydrobenzal-3,4-epoxy-1,1-bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexane (UP-612 grade), 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl-3,3-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate (UP-632 grade) were chosen as cycloaliphatic oligomers; diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DEG) was chosen as aliphatic oligomer. To modify the epoxy oligomers, unsaturated acrylic monomers, such as acrylic acid and methyl acrylic acid ester; aromatic and aliphatic oligoester acrylates, such as α,ω-methacryl(bis-diethylene glycol)phthalate (MDP-1 grade), α,ω-methacryldi(diethyleneglycolphthalate) (MDP-2 grade), α,ω-methacryl(bis-triethyleneglycol)phthalate (MGP-9 grade) and atri-(oxyethylene)-α,ω-dimethacrylate (TGM-3 grade); condensation product of linseed oil dimerized fatty acids and polyethylenepolyamine, such as oligoamide L-20 grade; condensation product of ricinoleic acid, castor oil and maleic anhydride, such as unsaturated polyester PE-220, were used. The thermophysical and relaxation properties of cross-linked polymers, obtained under exposure to γ-radiation of Co60 and electrons accelerated by the absorbed radiation dose of 50–150 kGy at the beam current of 2‑4 mA and electron energy of 240-300 keV, were studied. The distance from the exhaust window of the accelerator to the irradiated surface of the samples was 63-80 mm. The thermophysical properties of the cured polymers were evaluated using thermomechanical studies on a thermomechanograph with the temperature rise of 1о/min and the pressure of 0.54 MPa in the temperature range of 293‑673 K, as well as the differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyzes on a system derivatograph by L. Paulik, R. Paulik, L. Erdei in the temperature range of 293–973 K with the rise rate of 7о/min. The relaxation properties and molecular mobility of the cross-linked polymers were studied by the dielectric method. The dielectric loss tangent was determined in the temperature range of 143‑393K at the frequency of 1 kHz using a digital automatic bridge of alternating current R-589. The test sample temperature was measured using a potentiometer on a copper-constantan thermocouple, which was placed in the measuring cell along with the test sample. The samples were cooled by placing the cell in a vessel with liquid nitrogen. As a result of the studies, the influence of the chemical nature of epoxy oligomers and unsaturated modifiers on the processes of structure formation and molecular mobility of polymers, obtained under conditions of radiation-chemical curing, was established. It was determined, that when modifying epoxy oligomers with acrylic acid, methyl acrylic acid ester, oligoester acrylates of MGP-9 ((α,ω-methacryl(bis-triethyleneglycol)phthalate)) or TGM-3 ((tri-(oxyethyleneglicol)-α,ω-dimethacrylate)) grades, the structuring of compositions, based on the DEG-1 aliphatic epoxy oligomer and UP-612 cycloaliphatic oligomer, was more efficient than the compositions based on unsaturated ETO oligomers grade such as 2-ethylhexylepoxytallate oligomer and epoxidian oligomers of ED-20 and ED-22 grades. It was established, that the modifier oligoamide of L-20 grade, containing primary and secondary amino groups, increased the radiation sensitivity of the compositions, based on epoxidian and cycloaliphatic oligomers, and reduced the inhibitory effect of atmospheric oxygen. The optimal composition and the main technological parameters were determined, what allowed to obtain materials with high physical and mechanical properties and adhesive strength to various metals. The application of the developed materials under industrial conditions will make it possible to organize a continuous high-speed radiation-chemical process for producing polymer coatings on metals, providing improved working conditions, lower energy consumption, as compared to the thermochemical process of the coatings production, and will increase the corrosion resistance of metals.

Surface Modification of Cellulose Membranes To Prepare a High-Capacity Membrane Adsorber for Monoclonal Antibody Purification via Hydrophobic Charge-Induction Chromatography

Hydrophobic charge-induction chromatography (HCIC) has emerged as an efficient method for antibody purification, but traditional packed-bed chromatography continues to suffer from high pressure drop and low transport efficiency. A versatile surface modification method is proposed to prepare HCIC membrane adsorbers. We first modified a commercial regenerated cellulose (RC) membrane by the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DEGDE), producing the RC-g-PDEGDE membrane, which was then modified by the ring-opening reaction of an epoxy group with a sulfydryl group in four mercaptoheterocyclic ligands. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human immunoglobulin G (IgG) were used as model contaminant and antibody, respectively. The highest ligand density achieved is 370 mmol/L, and the static and dynamic adsorption capacities of IgG reached 195 and 65 mg/mL, respectively. Immobilization of microalgae on the surface of new cross-linked polyethylenimine-based sorbents

We report on the use of the polyethylenimine-based (PEI) sorbents for immobilization and harvesting of microalgae (MA) cells. Specific materials assessed were porous solid polymers from highly-branched PEI synthesized by cross-linking with epichlorohydrin (ECH) or diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DGDE). We estimated the effect of PEI/cross-linker ratio on the MA attachment and biocompatibility of the sorbents with the MA cells. A decrease in the cross-linker percentage resulted in the enhancement of the immobilization efficiency but impaired the cell viability as was manifested by inhibition of the photosynthetic activity of the MA cells. The rate of Chlorella vulgaris cell attachment to the sorbents with ECH was faster as compared to that of the PEI–DGDE-based polymers. The cells immobilized on the PEI–ECH sorbents showed a more profound decline in their viability (assessed via photosynthetic activity). The sorbents with 60% of DGDE were characterized by high immobilization efficiency. These sorbents supported a prolonged cultivation of the immobilized MA without impairing their viability and metabolic activity. We conclude that the sorbents with a lower percentage of DGDE (<30%) and sorbents with ECH are suitable for harvesting of the MA cells intended for immediate downstream processing, potentially without the cell desorption. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on successful application of PEI-based sorbents in microalgal biotechnology.

Analysis of the adhesive properties of carbon nanotube- and graphene oxide nanoribbon-dispersed aliphatic epoxy resins based on the Maxwell model

The viscosity of uncured epoxy resins is usually increased by their incorporation of dispersed fillers such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The present authors found that for the aliphatic epoxy resin, i.e. diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, the viscosity increase is greatly suppressed when graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) are dispersed instead of CNTs. The present study aims to compare the effects of CNT and GONR dispersions in this resin on the adhesive, tensile and thermal properties of the cured resin. GONR dispersions were found to be more effective than CNT dispersions at increasing the fracture toughness, lap shear strength and peel strength of the cured resin. A simple analysis based on a two-element Maxwell model was presented, which reproduced the differences in the temperature and velocity dependences of the lap shear strength and peel strength. This model suggested that the increase in the adhesive strength was due to the increase in the intrinsic adhesive failure energy for the GONR dispersions, while it was due to the increase in the viscoelastic energy dissipation within the resin for the CNT dispersions.

Immobilization of horseradish peroxidase on ZnO nanowires/macroporous SiO2 composites for the complete decolorization of anthraquinone dyes.

A zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires/macroporous silicon dioxide composite was used as support to immobilize horseradish peroxidase (HRP) simply by in situ cross-linking method. As cross-linker was adsorbed on the surface of ZnO nanowires, the cross-linked HRP was quite different from the traditional cross-linking enzyme aggregates on both structure and catalytic performance. Among three epoxy compounds, diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DDE) was the best cross-linker, with which the loading amount of HRP with pI of 5.3 reached as high as 118.1 mg/g and specific activity was up to 14.9 U/mg-support. The mass loss of HRP cross-linked with DDE was negligible during 50-H leaching at 4 °C, and the thermal stability of the immobilized HRP was also quite good. The catalytic performance of immobilized HRP to decolorize anthraquinone dye was explored by using Reactive Blue 19 (RB 19) and Acid Violet 109 (AV 109) as model substrates. The results indicated that the immobilized HRP exhibited high decolorization efficiency and good reusability. The decolorization efficiency reached 94.3% and 95.9% for AV 109 and RB 19 within the first 30 Min, respectively. A complete decolorization of these two dyes has been realized within 2-3 H by using this new biocatalysis system.

Improved biodegradation of synthetic azo dye by horseradish peroxidase cross-linked on nano-composite support

A ZnO nanowires/macroporous SiO2 composite was used as support to immobilize horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by in-situ cross-linking method. Using diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DDE) as a long-chained cross-linker, it was adsorbed on the surface of ZnO nanowires before reaction with HRPs, the resulted composite was quite different from the traditional cross-linking enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) on both structure and catalytic performance. The immobilized HRP showed high activity in the decolorization of azo dyes. The effect of various conditions such as the loading amount of HRP, solution pH, temperature, contact time and concentration of dye were optimized on the decolorization. The decolorization percentage of Acid Blue 113 and Acid black 10 BX reached as high as 95.4% and 90.3%, respectively. The immobilized HRP gave the highest decolorization rate under dye concentration as 50mg/L and reaction time of 35min. The immobilized HRP exhibited much better resistance to temperature and pH inactivation than free HRP. The storage stability and reusability were greatly improved through the immobilization, from the decolorization of Acid blue 113 it was found that 80.4% of initial efficiency retained after incubation at 4°C for 60 days, and that 79.4% of decolorization efficiency retained after 12 cycles reuse.

A soybean meal-based wood adhesive improved by a diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether: properties and performance

A soybean meal was used to make an effective, biodegradable adhesive for plywood applications using the long-chain crosslinker diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DGDE) and the denaturation agent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS).

Cross-linking of succinate-grafted chitosan and its effect on the capability to adsorb Pb(II) ion

The aim of this research was to improve the adsorption capacity of chitosan by modification of the chitosan using various cross-linking agents and followed by grafting using succinate anhydride. Succinate anhydride was grafted into chitosan that had been cross-linked using ethylene glycol di-glycidyl ether (EGDE), diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DEGDE) andbisphenolAdiglycidyl ether (BADGE) on the hydroxyl group of chitosan to yield Chit- EGDE-Suc, Chit-DEGDE-Suc, and Chit-BADGE-Suc, respectively. Modified chitosans were analyzed using FTIR and TG-DTA and then applied as adsorbents for Pb(II) ion. Adsorption was carried out in batch condition with a variation of solution pH, contact time, and concentration of Pb(II) in the solution. Adsorption ofPb(II) ion reached optimum condition at pH 5 and contact time of 120 minutes. Adsorption of Pb(II) ion on all of the adsorbents fit well the pseudo-second order kinetic equation. Adsorption capacities of Pb(II) on Chit-EGDE-Suc, Chit-DEGDE-SucdanChit-BADGE-Suc were 0.333, 0.388 and 0.898 mmolg-1, respectively, which mean that the adsorption of Chit-BADGE-Suc was the highest and followed by Chit- DEGDE-Suc and Chit-EGDE-Suc.

Practical Improvement of SAP Hydrogel Properties via Facile Tunable Cross-linking of the Particles Surface

ABSTRACTTo improve gel toughness, surface cross-linking of partiallyneutralized acrylic acid based superabsorbent polymers (superabsorbent polymers, prepared by solution polymerization) was performed by diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether. Considering effective factors (treatment solution, surface cross-linker content, post-treatment temperature, and duration), a two-step surface modification procedure was performed on dried superabsorbent polymers particles. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has proved chemical cross-linking reaction. Mechanical properties have also been investigated. Besides, the modified rubber elasticity theory and Flory–Rehner equations have been used to investigate how they work in core–shell-like structure. The optimum condition provides at least a 100% raise in gel strength and appropriate absorbency.

A Scalable Method toward Superhydrophilic and Underwater Superoleophobic PVDF Membranes for Effective Oil/Water Emulsion Separation.

A superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic PVDF membrane (PVDFAH) has been prepared by surface-coating of a hydrogel onto the membrane surface, and its superior performance for oil/water emulsion separation has been demonstrated. The coated hydrogel was constructed by an interfacial polymerization based on the thiol-epoxy reaction of pentaerythritol tetrakis (3-mercaptopropionate) (PETMP) with diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) and simultaneously tethered on an alkaline-treated commercial PVDF membrane surface via the thio-ene reaction. The PVDFAH membranes can be fabricated in a few minutes under mild conditions and show superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties for a series of organic solvents. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis shows that the hydrogel coating was efficient throughout the pore lumen. The membrane shows superior oil/water emulsion separation performance, including high water permeation, quantitative oil rejection, and robust antifouling performance in a series oil/water emulsions, including that prepared from crude oil. In addition, a 24 h Soxhlet-extraction experiment with ethanol/water solution (50:50, v/v) was conducted to test the tethered hydrogel stability. We see that the membrane maintained the water contact angle below 5°, indicating the covalent tethering stability. This technique shows great promise for scalable fabrication of membrane materials for handling practical oil emulsion purification.

Evapomeation characteristics of cross-linked quaternized chitosan membranes for the separation of an ethanol/water azeotrope

The permeation and separation characteristics during evapomeation of an ethanol/water azeotrope (96.5 wt.-% ethanol) through quaternized chitosan (q-Chito) membranes and cross-linked q-Chito membranes, which were cross-linked with diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (DEDGE), were studied. Both the q-Chito and the cross-linked q-Chito membranes showed high water-permselectivity for an ethanol/water azeotrope. The permeation rates for both membranes decreased and the water-permselectivities increased, with an increasing degree of quaternization of the chitosan and cross-linker concentration. The mechanism of separation for the ethanol/water azeotrope through the q-Chito and cross-linked q-Chito membranes was analyzed by the solution-diffusion model. Increasing permeation temperature increased the permeation rate and decreased the water-permselectivity for both membranes. However, the permeation rates of a cross-linked q-Chito membrane at 60–80°C were almost the same as those of the q-Chito membrane, and the separation factors for water-permselectivity (α =4 100–4 200) in the former were greater by two orders of magnitude as compared to the latter (α = 47–58). The above results were discussed from the viewpoints of the physical and chemical structure of the q-Chito and cross-linked q-Chito membranes. Effects of the degree of quaternization on the separation factor (□), the sorption selectivity (○), and the diffusion selectivity (•) for an ethanol/water azeotrope using the q-Chito membranes.

Occupational dermatoses from exposure to epoxy resin compounds in a ski factory.

Of 22 workers in a ski factory, occupational allergic contact dermatitis was found in 8. 6 were sensitive to epoxy resin compounds, i.e., epoxy resins, hardeners or diluents, 1 to cobalt in glass-fiber reinforcements, and 1 to formaldehyde in a urea-formaldehyde glue and a lacquer. 4 workers had irritant contact dermatitis from epoxy resin compounds, lacquers, sanding dust, or glass-fiber dust. 3 had contact allergy from a new sensitizer, diethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether, in a reactive diluent. Immediate transfer of workers sensitized to epoxy resin from epoxy exposure prevents aggravation of their dermatitis and broadening of the sensitization to epoxy hardeners, diluents and other compounds.
