Molecular hybridization based on (-)-epigallocatechin gallate as a new class of antiglycation agents.

(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and olivetol hybrid molecules 1-4 were conveniently synthesized using dielectric barrier discharge plasma irradiation. The structures of these unprecedented hybrid molecules were determined by interpretation of spectroscopic data. The unusual hybrid 1 showed improved antiglycation potency toward the advanced formation of glycation end products than the original EGCG and olivetol. The novel hybrid 1 is an interesting new class of antiglycation candidate that requires further investigation.

Enhancement the Sensitivity of waveguide Coated ZnO thin films: Role of Plasma Irradiation

In this study, Dielectric Barrier Discharge plasma irradiation (DBD) is applied to treatment and improve the properties of the ZnO thin film deposited on the glass substrate as a sensor for glucose detection. The ZnO is prepared via a sol-gel method in this work. ZnO is irradiated by the DBD high voltage plasma to improve of its sensitivity. The optical properties, roughness and surface morphology of the waveguide coated ZnO thin films before and after DBD plasma irradiation are studied in this work. The results showed a significant improvement in the performance of the sensor in the detection of concentrations of glucose solution after plasma irradiation. Where the largest value in sensitivity was equal to 62.7 when the distance between electrodes was 5 cm compared to the sensitivity before irradiation, which was equal to 92. The high response showed in results demonstrating that the fabricated waveguide coated ZnO after plasma irradiation has the excellent potential application as a sensor to detect small concentration of glucose solution.

Plant Growth Enhancement of Seeds Immersed in Plasma Activated Water

ABSTRACTWe have produced plasma activated water (PAW) using air, O2, N2, He and Ar atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma irradiation to deionized water. Then, PAW was kept for 1 hour or 1 day at room temperature to reduce concentrations of short lifetime reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species before supplying to plants. O2, air and N2PAW induces growth enhancement of plants. For 1 hour PAW supply the longest seedling length after 3 days cultivation is 1.62, 1.38, 1.13, 1.12, and 1.04 times long for air, O2, He, N2, and Ar plasmas compared with the length for thecontrol, whereas for 1 day PAW supply it is 1.52, 1.28, 1.13, 1.10, and 1.08 times long for air, O2, He, N2and Ar. Therefore, long lifetime reactive oxygen nitrogen species in PAW is effective for the growth enhancement.

Effects of Atmospheric Air Plasma Irradiation to Seeds of Radish Sprouts on Chlorophyll and Carotenoids Concentrations in their Leaves

ABSTRACTWe studied effects of atmospheric air dielectric barrier discharge plasma irradiation to seeds of radish sprouts on chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations in their leaves. Plasma irradiation increases chlorophyll concentration under some irradiation conditions, whereas the irradiation has little effects on carotenoid concentration. These results show that plasma irradiation to seeds has influence on cell activities in a selective way.

Growth enhancement effects of radish sprouts: atmospheric pressure plasma irradiation vs. heat shock

We compare growth enhancement effects due to atmospheric air dielectric barrier discharge plasma irradiation and heat shock to seeds of radish sprouts (Raphanus sativus L.). Interactions between radicals and seeds in a short duration of 3 min. lead to the growth enhancement of radish sprouts in a long term of 7 days and the maximum average length is 3.7 times as long as that of control. The growth enhancement effects become gradually weak with time, and hence the ratio of the average length for plasma irradiation to that for control decreases from 3.7 for the first day to 1.3 for 7 day. The average length for heat shock of 60°C for 10 min. and 100°C for 3 min. is longer than that for control, and the maximum average length is 1.3 times as long as that of control. Heat shock has little contribution to the growth enhancement due to plasma irradiation, because the maximum temperature due to plasma irradiation is less than 60°C.

Effects of Atmospheric Pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Irradiation on Yeast Growth

ABSTRACTWe investigated effects of atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma irradiation on growth characteristics of bread yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisie). Nitric oxide of 400 ppm and O3above 200 ppm are produce by the DBD plasmas. DBD plasma irradiation of 50 and 100 s enhances the growth of yeast in the lag phase, whereas 150 s irradiation suppresses the growth. There is an optimum duration of plasma irradiation for the growth promotion.
