PL-SKT Loanwords in NE Thai Dialect Dictionary: A Case Study of Sound Changes in Vowels and Consonants

The Northeastern (NE) Thai dialect dictionary compiled by the National Cultural Council is one of the best NE dialect dictionaries. Pali and Sanskrit (PL-SKT) loanwords used in the spoken and written language and in NE literature were collected from the dictionary. Some words were very different from the original Pali and Sanskrit words because of sound changes in vowels and consonants. The objectives of this study were to explore the sound changes in vowels and consonants of PL-SKT loanwords in the Northeastern (NE) dialect dictionary compiled by the National Cultural Council. The conceptual framework of this study consists of usage of PL-SKT words through sound change theories. A qualitative method was employed and the data collection was done from the Northeastern (NE) dialect dictionary compiled by the National Cultural Council. It was found that there were 3,022 PL-SKT loanwords. Two kinds of sound change in vowels and consonants were found: intentional sound change and unintentional sound change. Seven types of vowel sound change and fourteen types of consonant sound change were found. Surprisingly sound changes in vowels and consonants with analogy in PL-SKT declension were found. The types of sound change in PL-SKT words seem to have occurred because they were more convenient to pronounce and beautiful in the spoken and written language including NE dialect literature.

The future of the Dictionary of Swedish Dialects in Finland has been secured through grants from the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland and the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland. The grants will finance the dictionary until december 31st, 2036, the estimated date of the dictionary’s completion. As of 2024, 79 500 articles of a planned 120 000 will have been published. Financing was also granted for two Finnish dictionaries: the dialect dictionary Suomen murteiden sanakirja and Vanhan kirjasuomen sanakirja, a dictionary of older written Finnish. All three dictionaries are edited and published by the Institute for the Languages of Finland in Helsinki.

Four hundred Greek idiomatic expressions: Ratings for subjective frequency, ambiguity, and decomposability.

Idioms differ from other forms of figurative language because of their dimensions of subjective frequency, ambiguity (possibility of having a literal interpretation), and decomposability (possibility of the idiom's words to assist in its figurative interpretation). This study focuses on the Greek language and aims at providing the first corpus of 400 Greek idioms rated for their dimensions by 113 native Greek students, aged 19 to 39 years. The study aimed at (1) rating all idioms for their degree of subjective frequency, ambiguity, and decomposability, and (2) investigating the relationships between these dimensions. Three different assessments were conducted, during which the participants were asked to evaluate the degree of idioms' subjective frequency, ambiguity, and decomposability. The idioms were selected from a dictionary of Greek idioms titled "Dictionary of Idioms in Modern Greek" (Vlaxopoulos, 2007). This study resulted in the first database of Greek idioms assessed for their dimensions. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (two-way mixed, absolute agreement) demonstrated high internal consistency in the ratings given for each dimension, for the same idiom, by the different individual raters. Correlational analyses showed that subjective frequency was positively moderately correlated with decomposability, and positively weakly correlated with ambiguity, while decomposability was positively moderately correlated with ambiguity.

The article analyzes lexical material for the Dictionary of Traditional Folk Crafts. The proposed materials reflect the peculiarities and regional differences of the pottery terminology of Podillia. The relevance of the article is due to the fact that many problems of dialect lexicology have not yet been solved, in particular, a national dictionary of dialects and a dictionary of individual regions of Ukrainian dialects have not been created. The nomination of phenomena and concepts of traditional folk culture is poly-informative, and their fixation and preservation remain an urgent task of modern dialectology. The sources of the factual material are recordings of live folk speech made by the author in 12 (twelve) settlements of Podillia in 1998-1999. The purpose of the research is to review the history of Podillia pottery as a folk craft, as well as to present a fragment of a dictionary of pottery terminology, and to introduce a name to denote the realities of pottery into scientific circulation. The article uses general scientific methods of research: analysis, synthesis and observation, which made it possible to identify and systematize colloquial material; the descriptive method was used in the process of analyzing the vernacular speech. Special linguistic methods of research: questionnaires and interviews contributed to the recording of dialect speech, contextual and interpretive analysis allowed to identify transformations of the semantic scope of lexemes functioning in the live speech of speakers of Podillia dialects, linguo-geographical method made it possible to illustrate the habitat of the recorded names. The result of the research is the introduction of lexical material collected during the expedition into scientific circulation. The work on the dictionary of pottery terminology is planned to be continued, streamlining the previously collected vocabulary. Originality. Studying the cultural characteristics of Ukrainians allows not only expanding general knowledge, but also passing on the nation's invaluable experience to future generations. The vocabulary of traditional crafts is a unique basis for enriching the language, a part of cultural and social memory. It is also important to compile dictionaries, as the recording of traditional folk culture concepts is an urgent issue not only for ethnology but also for linguistics. Conclusion. The pottery vocabulary of Podillia dialects is a complex multifaceted system with a clear structure. The study of this vocabulary proves that in terms of area, it shows tendencies towards spatial opposition: some of the lexemes are not found in neighboring dialects (brashne, bohonok, vedrovyi pot, veselce, etc.). We see the prospects for further research in the continuation of work on the compilation of the Dictionary of Podillia Dialects.

An Analysis of Idiomatic Expressions found in The Lightning Thief Song Lyrics

The title of this study is An Analysis of Idiomatic Expressions Found In “The Lightning Thief (Original Cast Recording)” Song Lyrics. The objective of this study is to analyze the existence of idioms inside of an existing work of literature in the form of songs as part of a musical play and what does the idiom classified as, specifically what set them apart from each other and what pattern made them classified as one type through their semantic side. This study also includes an analysis of idiomatic expressions in the form of idiom references as it is considered part of the character’s personal touch as part of a story. Through a qualitative research method, the writer gathers and analyzes each idiom that exists based on listed idioms of the fourth edition of Oxford Dictionary of Idioms by John Ayto to separate them into 3 idiom classifications made by Cacciari & Glucksberg in 1991 to those are Compositional Opaque, Compositional Transparent, and Quasi Metaphorical. Each type is sometimes difficult to classify, possibly due to the existence of either phrasal verbs or individual words that have multiple meanings.

The article is devoted to a little-researched thematic group of the vocabulary of the Ukrainian language - names of units of measurement. A detailed analysis of the history of the study of this vocabulary in Ukrainian studies allowed the author to state that the area of Ukrainian dialectological studies of this thematic group of vocabulary is quite narrow, even contrary to the heuristic value of this vocabulary. Therefore, the subject of the study were the names of the units of measurement in the Podolian dialect fixed in the "Materials for the Dictionary of the Podolian dialect" - 58 names extracted by the continuous sampling method. The work on compiling the Dictionary began in the 1950s, and therefore we assumed that it would contain names of units of measurement that are already archaic today. The analysis of the names of the units of measurement in the Podоlian dialects testified that the thematic vocabulary group under study presents a lexical-semantic microsystem that is extensive in number, rich in variability and ancient in origin. In the article the structural organization of attested names was modeled, it is established that the thematic vocabulary group "Names of units of measurement" is formed on the basis of 6 lexical-semantic groups: 1) names of units of measurement of area, 2) names of units of measurement of liquids, 3) names of units of measurement of length and distance , 4) names of units of measurement of weight, 5) names of units of measurement of bulk bodies, 6) names of units of measurement of grains. Each group was analyzed for the specifics of the nomination of the respective names, names with transparent and obscured motivation, borrowed names were established. According to the leading agricultural type of activity of the Podolians, the group of names of units of measurement of the area turned out to be the most numerous. Exactly in this group the largest number of borrowed names is attested. Among them there are many borrowings from German, Polish, Latin, Romanian, Turkic, etc. The activity of the principle of anthropocentrism in the nomination of measurement units was observed. It was found that the modern Podolian dialects still preserve the archaic names of units of measurement, which help to ostend the etymology of a number of lexemes of the corresponding thematic group in the Ukrainian literary language.

POMENOVANIA SIVEJ FARBY V SLOVENČINE V KONTEXTE SLOVANSKÝCH JAZYKOV SUSEDNÝCH AREÁLOV

: The study presents linguistic material which, from a diachronic and synchronic point of view, presents the way the Slovak language names the colour grey, and also the figurative meanings that Slovak colour names denoting the colour of ash are able to express in comparison with other Slavic languages of neighbouring areas, i.e. Czech, Polish and Ukrainian. The conclusions presented in the study are based on the results of a comparative and contrastive analysis of linguistic material obtained by excerpting from collections of folklore, a historical dictionary, a dictionary of Slovak dialects, and textual corpora of contemporary Slovak, Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian, coupled with a quantitative characterization of the use of the given colour names in these genetically related languages. The analysed linguistic material is the basis for conclusions concerning the differences in the use of colour names denoting grey colour in the formation of multi-word names in Slavic languages and in the adoption of international terminology in which these names occur. A comparison with Slavic languages whose areas are located in the geographical neighbourhood of Slovak shows that the richness of lexical meaning of words denoting grey colour and their use in multi-word naming of terminological and non-terminological character may be wider in other languages than in Slovak. Compared to other Slavic languages, in Slovak the competition of two adjectives denoting grey colour can be observed not only in the basic meaning, but also in figurative meanings and in multi-word denotations of terminological and phraseological character.

A Study on the Semantics of the Sichuan Dialect Word Ba Based on the Cognitive Perspective

The Sichuan dialect word ba is widely used and has a high frequency of occurrence within the dialect area. It is characterized by its rich semantic meanings and diverse parts of speech, making it one of the most representative common words in Sichuan dialect. However, existing dialect dictionaries have issues such as incomplete definitions, unclear interpretations, and uncertain grammatical properties, which call for further careful revisions. Cognitive linguistics, one of the current research hotspots in linguistics, can fundamentally explain the intrinsic mechanisms and external manifestations of lexical semantic formation. This paper, based on the cognitive perspective and within the macro-framework of Prototype Category Theory, employs the theories of metaphor, metonymy, and image schema to conduct a micro-level analysis and clarification of the original meaning and extended meanings of the Sichuan dialect word ba. It attempts to provide cognitive reasoning for interpreting the meanings of dialect words in dictionaries, as well as to offer new perspectives and cases for exploring the semantics of dialect words.

VERB DERIVATIVES WITH THE PREFIX NA- IN THE RUSSIAN DIALECTS OF THE AMUR REGION

The article examines the derived verbs with the prefix na- on the dialect material that is poorly studied in this aspect — the Russian dialects of the Amur region, which were formed on the territory of late settlement and are, on the one hand, under the influence of the literary language and, on the other hand, under the interdialect and foreign language influence from other dialects and aboriginal languages. The types of derivatives with the prefix na-, recorded in the Dictionary of Russian Dialects of the Amur region, are distinguished, the interpretation of the main meanings of this prefix in derived verbs is presented, including from the point of view of an aspectological approach, the phenomena of substitution and agglutination are noted, as well as the distinctive features of dialectisms compared with literary analogues of verbs with this prefix.

ON THE LEXICAL COMPOSITION OF KAZAKH WORDS FROM THE DICTIONARY OF V.V. RADLOV

The article is devoted to the study of the lexical composition of Kazakh words in V.V. Radlov's dictionary "The experience of the dictionary of Turkic dialects". The most optimal way to achieve this goal is to analyze words by thematic groups. The main feature of this method of research is that only in this way is a high-quality and scientifically complete study of the structure and composition of the Kazakh vocabulary in the general Turkic dictionary achieved. Considering the vocabulary of the Kazakh language of the XIX century by preliminary distribution into thematic groups and further analysis of the composition of these words, it is possible to reveal the full picture of the life of the people during the historical period. The article uses scientific methods of decomposition and systematization by semantic groups, synchronous and diachronic analysis, methods of comparative and comparative analysis. During the thematic analysis of words, it becomes possible to determine the level of linguistic competence of the author, the compiler of the dictionary. This article can serve as an example of the study of the vocabulary of the Kazakh language from a historical-lexicological and historical-lexicographic point of view. As a result, by conducting a thematic analysis of Kazakh words in Radlov's dictionary, it becomes possible to determine the structure and composition of the historical vocabulary of the Kazakh language of the XIX century.

НАРОДНЫЕ НАЗВАНИЯ ЖИВОТНЫХ И РАСТЕНИЙ В ЯКУТСКОМ ЯЗЫКЕ, ОБРАЗОВАННЫЕ ПО ПРИЗНАКУ «СВЯЗЬ С МИФОЛОГИЧЕСКИМИ ОБРАЗАМИ, ПОВЕРЬЯМИ И ТОТЕМИЗМОМ»

This article is devoted to the study of folk names of animals and plants in the Yakut language, formed on the basis of “connection with mythological images, beliefs and totemism”. The study uses descriptive analysis to identify the connection between language and culture and the main patterns of motivational features of the nomination of wildlife objects; component analysis aimed at considering the formal semantic structure of zoonyms and phytonyms to determine the role of their use. The research material was extracted by continuous sampling from the database of Yakut phytonyms and zoonyms, created over the course of about ten years as part of the preparation of a dissertation on the topic “Vocabulary of wildlife in the Yakut language: onomasiology and etymology”. The database is based on a large amount of linguistic material from various sources: explanatory and dialectal dictionaries, biological books, field definitions with reference material, archival documents, folklore and ethnographic materials. The purpose of this article is to show the dependence of the nomination, use and semiotic status of wildlife objects on their signs and properties. The tokens associated with traditional beliefs and legends have bright markings that reveal the peculiarities of the culture and worldview of the Sakha people. The study found that the names of mythological creatures are used in the composition of complex phytonyms and zoonyms: abaahy (demon), tangara (deity), kut (soul), oyuun (shaman), etc. The images of mythological creatures abaahy “demon, evil spirit” and tangara “deity” are used to denote the negative and positive properties of plants and animal signs: abaahy “demon, evil spirit” in plants expresses venom, in animals – ugliness; tangara “deity” in plants – benefit and beauty, in animals – deification and totemism; it is curious that the kut lexeme “soul” (mainly referring in these nominations to cattle and large wild ungulates) is used in the nomination of beetles and their larvae (in which the mandibles are the most striking morphological feature – apparently a parallel to the horns).

A Philologist’s Perspective on Artificial Intelligence – a Case Study into English Dialect Dictionary Online 4.0

Abstract Our paper seeks to bridge the gap between a linguistic and a technological description of Artificial Intelligence, as we see chatbots and other representations pushing to the forefront of academic ways of working. We set out to venture a philologist’s perspective on AI, critically reflecting upon the extent and nature of a lexicographical software’s ‘intelligence.’ We shall discuss and demonstrate AI’s potentials and limitations by adhering to the specific case of the recently released English Dialect Dictionary Online 4.0 (Markus and team 2023). While we propose that EDD Online is ‘intelligent’ in the sense that its retrieval software will anticipate and be capable of answering many of the questions that dialectologists would raise, we claim that the reason for such ‘intelligence’ is inherently rooted within the competence of humans in terms of predicting such questions and of eliciting the answers by means of complex query rules. We shall in fact argue that – as opposed to retrieval software types like the hotly debated ChatGPT chatbot, which are merely black box phenomena – EDD Online 4.0’s user interface represents a rare feature of AI: transparency and proactive user-friendliness. Religious and mythological ideas of Karelians about smallpox, rubella, measles and chicken-pox diseases

about smallpox, rubella, measles and chickenpox diseases Traditional medicine has always triggered genuine interest among researchers. It reflects not only medical practice, ra-tional and irrational, but also prognostics of diseases, beliefs, conspiracy traditions, ritual magic, etc. Mythology occupies a significant place in ethnomedicine as well, affecting not only the cause-effect relationship between the occurrence of an ailment and abolition of it, but also the designation of some diseases, the nomination of which is motivated by the mythological percep-tions of the people. Christianization of Karelians, which took place in the 13th century, had a major influence on the Karelian culture. Christian and pagan views became closely intertwined, making a dual impact on such cultural layer of the ethnic group as traditional medicine. The problematics of scientific research is determined by the lack of a complex analysis of the issue. The information about the ethnomedicine of the proper Karelians, Livvik Karelians and Ludikov Karelians was collected from pub-lished sources (Karelian speech samples, dialect dictionaries of the Karelian language, periodicals) and by the means of gather-ing materials from respondents living on the territory of the Republic of Karelia. The author addresses the religious and mytho-logical ideas of the Karelians on the example of such diseases as smallpox, rubella, and chickenpox. The identification of an entire complex of common ideas about these diseases — their personification, family relationships, methods of treatment and nomination of diseases — became the main result of the research. Karelians believed that smallpox, measles, rubella and chickenpox are related, they are sisters. The reason of their invasion was seen in not honoring them or insulting them with an action or word. When patients with these diseases appeared in the house, various forms of coaxing were used towards them, and a solemn reception was held, aiming at propitiation of these ailments. In the treatment of smallpox, rubella and measles, the main emphasis was placed on the use of red matter in healing rituals, as this color was believed to have protective function. Proba-bly, this method was based on the “like cures like” or “like repels like” principle, typical for Karelian folk medicine. Engaging the data on folk medicine of Vepsians and Russians showed the similarity of the religious and mythological ideas of these peoples with Kare-lians, which is explained by their long-term contact and interinfluence of cultures while living on the same territory.

Nasal Vowels in Solor Dialect of Lamaholot Language and Their Morpho-Syntactic Significance

The Lamaholot language spoken in East Flores and Lembata has several interesting distinctive features, compared to its neighboring languages. One of these features is nasal vowels. Nasal vowels in this language are phonemic, in that they show distinct meanings in contrasted minimal-pair words. Because of this phonemic characteristic, the nasal vowels in the dialect have significant influences on the Lamaholot linguistics. This research will examine the importance of nasal vowels in Solor dialect of Lamaholot morphologically and syntactically. Two research problems this study has tried to answer are (1) what are the morphologic and syntactic significances of the nasal vowels of Solor Dialect of Lamaholot Language, and (2) what meanings do these nasal vowels indicate when they involve in morphological processes? Apart from being an additional linguistic reference for the study of languages in eastern Indonesia in particular, and Austronesian languages at a broader level, this research also contributes to the efforts to maintain regional languages in East Nusa Tenggara. The approach to be used in this study is descriptive. The theory referred to is functional typology with the concepts of Basic Linguistic Theory based on generative structural grammar. References to the theory can be read, among others, in Payne (1997), Dixon (2010a), Comrie (1989) and Sophen (2007a, 2007b, 2007c). Data for this study was collected through recording and elicitation from the native speakers of Solor dialect. The collected corpus in the form of audio data is analyzed and stored electronically with the Praat application, and then transcribed into text form. The text data is sorted, then analyzed and stored electronically with the Toolbox application, which can later be used as additional data for the Solor – Lamaholot dialect dictionary database, which the author is currently working on. The research results show that the presence of nasal vowels in the Solor dialect of the Lamaholot language gives very significant and influential contribution to the communication and speech of speakers of this dialect. This grammatical feature is so important that its presence can give rise to different interpretations by listeners. Morphosyntactically, the nasal vowels in Solor dialect of the Lamaholot language express five functions, namely (1) to express the pronominal form of ownership; (2) to express the form of alienable ownership; (3) to express the enclitic form of third person singular possession in common nouns; (4) to state the participial function derived from the verb; and (5) to express the attributive function of adjectives in the Solor dialect of the Lamaholot language.

The problem of reflecting the variability of a word in a dialect dictionary (on the material of the “Pskov Regional Dictionary with Historical Data”)

The article is devoted to the problem of reflecting the variability of the Russian dialect word in dialect dictionaries published in Russia from the 19th to the 21st centuries. The study aims to consider the method of presenting different types of variants of a dialect word in various dialect dictionaries, with the main attention being paid to the analysis of works of dialect lexicography created since the middle of the 20th century until now. The submission of variants in the “Pskov Regional Dictionary”, which has been worked on at Leningrad State University — St. Petersburg State University (and Pskov Pedagogical Institute — Pskov State University) since the 1950s, is analyzed in most detail. Research objectives: to study, based on the relevant sections of the introductions and prefaces to dialect dictionaries of the Russian language, what exactly the authors of dictionaries consider to be variants of a dialect word, what types of variants they distinguish and how they are presented in their dictionaries. The novelty of the work lies in the consideration of the problem under study on the basis of a wide range of dialect dictionaries published in different regions of Russia and differently interpreting the theory of variance and describing lexical variation. The material of the study is both the theoretical introductory sections of Russian dialect dictionaries — namely, those parts that are devoted to the variability of the dialect lexeme — and the dialect dictionaries themselves, which differently present certain types of word variants in the dictionary and in a separate dictionary entry.

"МИР ЖИВОТНЫХ" В ДИАЛЕКТНОЙ ЯЗЫКОВОЙ КАРТИНЕ МИРА

The work is devoted to the description of the dialectal linguistic picture of the world, which, being part of the general linguistic picture, differs from the latter in its natural character, reflects the peculiarities of the worldview, lifestyle and life of the people. Dialect lexicography is of great importance for the study of regional culture, since it is in the dialect dictionary that folk and peasant culture is reflected. The vocabulary collected in dialect dictionaries is sometimes the only evidence of the life and lifestyle of entire generations of people. When describing dialect vocabulary, special attention is paid to the development of principles for compiling thematic (ideographic dictionaries). The study of a thematic group, rather than a single lexical unit, allows, on the one hand, to form the most complete picture of the studied fragment of reality, and on the other, to study the connections and relationships of each individual word with other words within the thematic group, i.e. to combine the extralinguistic and linguistic aspects of the description. The article considers the method of compiling a dictionary entry of an ideographic dialect dictionary according to nominative nests combining dialect names of certain realities of national life.

Perception verbs in the Russian dialects of the Amur region and in the northeastern dialect of the Chinese language of Heilongjiang province

The subject of this work is the verbs of perception in the Russian dialects of the Amur region and in the northeastern dialect of the Chinese language of Heilongjiang province. The research material is two dialect dictionaries: "Dictionary of Russian dialects of the Amur region" and "Dictionary of dialects of Heilongjiang province". The study revealed 26 verbal units from the "Dictionary of Russian Dialects of the Amur region" (including 18 verbs and 8 phraseological units with the meaning of visual and auditory perception, as well as perception of smell and touch); 18 verbs with the meaning of visual perception from the "Dictionary of Dialects of Heilongjiang province". The purpose of the study of this article is the comparative classification of perception verbs in the border regions of the Russian Federation and China, separated by the Amur River (in Chinese, Heilongjiang). In developing the classification of the studied language units, continuous sampling, contextual, descriptive-analytical and comparative methods were used. The relevance and novelty of the work lies in the fact that the perceptual verbal vocabulary in the dialects of both ethnic groups is poorly studied; for the first time an attempt was made to study the comparative classification of the verbs of perception of the Russian dialects of the Amur region and the northeastern dialect of the Chinese language of Heilongjiang province; the effectiveness of the study of perception verbs can contribute to the reconstruction of the dialect linguistic picture of the world and the linguistic personality of speakers of the dialect of two different ethnic groups. The main conclusions of this study summarize that perceptual vocabulary connects the world of objective reality with the expression of this world in the language of human communication and that in the dialects of both ethnic groups (in the Russian dialects of the Amur region and in the northeastern dialect of the Chinese language of Heilongjiang province) verbal units with the meaning of visual perception prevail over other groups.

Background. The article is devoted to the analysis of dialect lexicography and the possibility of using rare common language dictionaries as one of the sources of dialectological research. The goal is to describe the history of creation and characterize the source base and register of D. I. Yavornytskyi's "Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language". Methods. General scientific research methods are applied: analysis, synthesis, description and observation. Results. The stages of the formation of dialect lexicography are defined. Changes in the structure of the dictionary article, the involvement of illustrative material, and approaches to the presentation of the material were noted. The realities of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war actualize the need for the widest possible survey of Ukrainian dialects and the fixation of lexical materials in dictionaries of various types. The urgency of compiling a consolidated dialect dictionary, which will cover the vocabulary of all areas of daily life in the Ukrainian language, is emphasized. Special attention was paid to the publication of dictionaries of endangered dialects, particularly steppe speech. The history of the creation of D. I. Yavornytskyi's "Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language" is described; features of its arrangement; the source base is characterized; regions whose speech is reflected in the pages of the work. The structure of the dictionary article and its components (registry unit, remarks, explanatory part, illustrative material, source of citation or place of recording) are clarified. Different types of vocabulary of steppe sayings, which have become registry units of the dictionary, are singled out. Emphasis is placed on the possibility of using rare common language dictionaries in dialectological research. Сonclusions. The prospect of compiling a consolidated dictionary of Ukrainian dialects requires taking into account the widest possible range of sources of various types. It was determined that D. I. Yavornytskyi's "Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language" contains passportized and semanticized dialect materials, and therefore, it can be involved in comparative and descriptive dialectological studies.

Szeptucha i Natura. Od analizy leksykograficznej do opowieści Nadziei Bittel-Dobrzyńskiej

The aim of the article is to demonstarte the relationship of the witch-doctor, a Podlasie healer, with nature. It presents a lexicographical analysis of the word szeptucha, centred primarily around Jan Karłowicz’s definition proposed in the dictionary of Polish dialects. Next, it discusses the relationship between witch-doctors and nature on the basis of the autobiographical prose Jak wiedźma Agrypicha znachorstwa mnie uczyła [How the witch Agripicha taught me the healing witchcraft] by Nadzieja Bittel-Dobrzyńska, which is connected with the historical and geographical motherland of witch-doctors: the Vilnius region, the Polish-Belarusian borderland and Podlasie.

Общие названия сорной травы в русских говорах Пермского края: мотивационный аспект (на материале диалектных словарей)

The article examines lexical units being general designations of weeds in Russian dialects of the Perm region. Data from dialect dictionaries of the region were used as research material. The aim was to study the motivational semantics of these lexemes. In the course of research, the motivational characteristics underlying the general names of weeds were identified, motivational models according to which these lexemes are formed were constructed, the general principles of designating weeds in Perm dialects were determined. It has been proven that phytonyms in Perm dialects can have multiple motivations. The study explores the ideas of Russian residents of the region about weeds reflected in dialect phytonyms. The main one is the idea of the uselessness of weeds on the farm (pustaya trava, sornyak, sornaya trava, sor, khlam, dudora, shelobon', batarma, chashcha, durnina, durnotrav'e, durnyak, durman; in this case the semantics often develops according to the model ‘waste, garbage, trash, rubbish’ → ‘weeds’; this is the most frequent semantic-motivational model in the considered group of vocabulary); designations reflecting objective characteristics of plants (features of the structure of the stem and leaves (dubinnik, batozh'e, dudka), properties of weeds (deryuga, deryaga, deryazhka, lipuchaya trava, suvolotka, suvoloka)) are less frequent in the study area and are of a concrete nature (trail along the ground, stick to other objects, etc.); in a single case, the name of a weed reflected ideas about the quality of a person leading to its appearance (bab'ya len', which can be roughly translated as a woman’s laziness; with this method of naming, not only the plants themselves but also this personal quality, through association with the plants, receive a negative cultural assessment). The obtained conclusions testify in favor of the anthropocentric, evaluative, concrete-sensual nature of the dialect speakers’ worldview.
