How Do Trauma and Identity Unfold Through Dialogue? A Psychoanalytic and Linguistic Analysis of Netflix's Slasher Solstice

This study aims to explore the relationship between trauma, desire, and identity through language patterns in the Netflix series Slasher: Solstice. Using a psychoanalytic and linguistic analysis approach, the research delves into how characters' dialogues and speech styles reflect their psychological states, particularly in confronting past traumas. The study employs a qualitative method with observational analysis of the interactions and dialogues of the main characters within the series. The results reveal that speech patterns, word choice, and intonation provide deep insights into the characters' psychological conditions. For instance, the character Connor displays aggressive and fragmented speech patterns as a defense mechanism against trauma, while the character Sadia exhibits emotional control through structured and formal language. This research offers a new perspective by combining psychoanalytic and linguistic approaches to understand character development within the horror genre. The analysis reveals that shifts in language style, as the narrative unfolds, indicate a transformation in the characters' identities, increasingly shaped by trauma and internal conflict.

Inferential language use in the oral narratives of adolescents with and without developmental language disorder

ABSTRACT Inferential language is an essential aspect of narrative storytelling. It offers not only details about events such as cause and effect and character cognition (e.g. intentions, actions, and reactions) but other evaluative and descriptive language. Previous studies have shown that children with developmental language disorder (DLD, previously also termed as Specific Language Impairment, SLI) exhibit weakness in narrative development, and such weakness is suggested to be unlikely to be resolved over time. However, studies that have focused on the inferential language use in narratives of adolescents with DLD are almost non-existent, and it is unclear whether inferential language use by adolescents with DLD would remain problematic or achieve close-to-normal performance. To address this issue, we compared the use of inferential language in the oral narratives 19 adolescents with DLD (Mean age = 14.3; SD = 0.64) and 19 adolescents with typical language development (TLD; Mean age = 14.0; SD = 0.50). Each transcribed narrative was coded for inferences across character actions/attempts, internal states, causality, character dialogue and other inferences. Results indicated that the two groups performed similarly in all measures except for assigning possessive expressions. Our results suggest that adolescents with DLD may approximate their typical language development (TLD) peers in terms of the inferential language use in oral narratives.

An Analysis of Cantonese Verbal Humor in Table for Six from the Perspective of Pragmatics

Table for Six is a Hong Kong comedy movie released in 2022. With a box office of 77 million Hong Kong dollars, it won the historical championship of Hong Kong comedy films and was well-received by the public upon its release. It is a superb example of a “Dayo Wong-style movie” , with a ton of amazing Cantonese verbal humor. The cooperation principle, a crucial pragmatics theory, is used in this study along with qualitative research methodologies to investigate the mechanism of verbal humor production in the Cantonese setting. The article strategically selects four very representative character dialogues in the movie and conducts an in-depth analysis of them using the cooperative principle’s quantity maxim, quality maxim, relation maxim and manner maxim, further broadening the scope of linguistics research in the Cantonese context.

Bravery and Friendship in Children's Literature through the Lens of Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis

This research utilizes Van Dijk's (1977) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework to investigate the themes of bravery and friendship in the children's stories "The Brave Little Squirrel" and "Milo's Magical Map." The primary objective is to examine how discourse influences social identities, values, and interpersonal relationships through narrative structures and character dynamics. Using qualitative methods, the study conducts a detailed textual analysis focusing on thematic elements, character dialogues, and the moral lessons delineated in both stories. The findings indicate that these narratives portray bravery not solely as a heroic quality but as an expression of aiding others, thereby nurturing a sense of community and companionship. Additionally, the analysis uncovers the underlying social values presented in these narratives, underscoring the significance of empathy and collaboration for young readers. This research enhances the understanding of children’s literature as a crucial factor in shaping social and moral growth, offering valuable insights for educators and parents regarding themes that can effectively instill positive values in children.

Особенности перевода диалогической коммуникации в видеоигре “Cyberpunk 2077” в языковой паре «английский – русский»

The paper examines the specifics of video game localization from English into Russian, focusing on the translation of dialogic communication in the video game “Cyberpunk 2077”. The research aims to identify the optimal translation technology for character lines in the game’s universe by describing the most frequent techniques for localizing verbal content. The research material includes original and translated text fragments of dialogues of the main characters from the video game “Cyberpunk 2077”, as well as its DLC “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty”, obtained using a continuous sampling method for a total of 85,000 characters. The scientific novelty of the research lies in systematizing the lexical-stylistic and syntactic means of realizing the pragmatic potential of the video game in dialogic communication in the studied language pair. It has been found that during the translation and localization of the video game, translators employ translation techniques such as semantic development, conceptual adaptation, antonymic translation, omission, transcription, and calquing. In the translation process, special attention should be paid to the rules of the in-game universe, the specifics of the video game genre, and its game mechanics. The research findings have shown that the emergence of semantic inaccuracies during the translation of dialogic communication in video games is due to a number of syntactic, lexical, and stylistic features of the original game, including non-linear dialogues with the choice of lines, interjections, pseudo-realia, dialectalisms, and Easter eggs. The adequacy of the sounding text takes precedence in the localization of the video game “Cyberpunk 2077”.

Patriotisme dalam Novel Tan Karya Hendri Teja

This research aims to describe: (1) the forms of patriotism in Hendri Teja's novel Tan, (2) the causes of patriotism in the novel, and (3) the impact of patriotism within the story. The object of this research is Tan, a novel by Hendri Teja published in 2016. The study employs a descriptive literary research method. The data comprises words, phrases, clauses, and sentences related to patriotism, including the narrator's explanations, character dialogues, and actions within the novel. The primary instrument for this research is the researcher, who utilizes various formats for both data collection and analysis. The data collection techniques involve reading and thoroughly understanding the novel, identifying and categorizing the characters, marking relevant utterances and narrations, and compiling the data in alignment with the research questions. The data analysis technique involves several steps: (1) identifying data related to patriotism in the novel, (2) analyzing the gathered data, and (3) drawing conclusions regarding the issues of patriotism and presenting them in a thesis format. The findings of this study reveal three key aspects: (1) the different forms of patriotism exhibited by the characters, (2) the underlying causes of these patriotic expressions, and (3) the subsequent impact of patriotism on the characters and the narrative. The focus of this research remains on Tan, emphasizing the comprehensive examination of patriotic elements as portrayed by Hendri Teja.

Literary Stylistics Features in the Musical Drama NURBAYA by Indonesia Kaya

This study examines the literary stylistic features in NURBAYA, a contemporary Indonesian musical drama produced by Indonesia Kaya. Employing Leech and Short's (1981) framework, the research focuses on sound patterns and figures of speech, investigating how these elements enhance narrative cohesion and emotional impact while reflecting cultural values. Using qualitative content analysis, the study systematically categorizes and interprets stylistic features in conversation utterances and song lyrics. The analysis reveals a prevalence of sound patterns, particularly rhyme, which contributes to the musical's rhythmic quality and cohesion. Figures of speech, notably litotes, are employed to reflect cultural values of politeness and subtlety. For instance, the frequent use of litotes (found in 35% of character dialogues) underscores adherence to traditional norms, enhancing the play's cultural resonance. NURBAYA, as a bridge between traditional and contemporary Indonesian theatre, offers a unique lens for examining the evolution of literary style in performance art. This study demonstrates how specific literary devices enrich artistic expression and reinforce cultural themes in contemporary Indonesian theatre. These findings contribute to our understanding of the interplay between linguistics, literature, and cultural expression in performing arts, offering insights into how stylistic analysis can illuminate broader sociocultural dynamics in theatrical works.

In our daily lives, understanding and using language is an art. We not only are supposed to know its surface meaning, but also understand its implicature. The successful use of language will yield twice the result with half the effort. The dialogue of characters in TV dramas is an important manifestation of language. The simple form and rich language style of The Legend of Zhen Huan is one of the important factors for the show to become the pinnacle of harem-themed TV dramas in China in past years. The cooperative principle and politeness principle in pragmatics are important theoretical foundations for character analysis. This paper takes a number of specific dialogues in The Legend of Zhen Huan as examples, according to the backgrounds of the plots, combined with the classic theory of pragmatics, analyzes 10 examples selected from the TV series of The Legend of Zhen Huan, attempts to reveal how and when characters obeys and violates CP and PP, and experiences its unique linguistic charm.

Shakespeare Machine: New AI-Based Technologies for Textual Analysis

Abstract This article demonstrates a method using tools from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to aid in analyzing theatrical texts and similar works. The method deploys pre-trained large language model neural networks to gather metadata for a text that is amenable to downstream statistical analyses surfacing patterns of interest in character dialogue. We specifically focus on Shakespeare’s works, collecting metadata in the form of sentiment and emotion scores for each line of his plays. In addition to sentiment and emotion scores produced by NLP models, we also directly gather metadata such as genre, line length, and character gender. We show how these metadata may be used to illuminate a number of interesting patterns in Shakespearean character which may be difficult to detect from a direct reading of the texts. We use these metadata to expose statistically significant relationships in Shakespeare between character gender and the emotional content of that character’s dialogue, controlling for genre. We also present here the publicly available dataset that we have compiled to perform these analyses. The data collects text from Shakespeare’s plays along with a variety of metadata useful for this and other forms of analysis of Shakespeare’s works. The methodology demonstrated here may be extended to other varieties of metadata provided by large NLP models.

In the long-term practice of Kazakh literature, the importance and focus of historical novels have always been high. We will not be mistaken if we consider historical works serving the interests of the country as the main character of the Kazakh growing literature, which revive the past, reminds of the forgotten and brings to light what has remained a secret. The authors studying such works pay attention in the article to the breadth of the thematic background of Kazakh prose under sovereignty and the importance of historical novels in reviving the consciousness of the people. Taking as the main object the historical novel of the Kazakh writer Madi Ayymbetov "Bupai khanim", the image of the famous Khan of the Younger Zhuz Abulkhair Khanis considered. This novel is not able for its novelty, the fact that it was one of the few works written about a woman, and the fact that it was a work that describes the image of Abulkhair Khan, whose life was full of contradictions. In addition, the authorsurge to pay attention to the artistic tradition of Kazakh verbalart, worldview, personal position of the author in creating the image of Abulkhair. He defines the characteristic features, attaching importance to the dialogue of other characters in the novel with Abulkhair, his attitude towards him, comparisons in him. It also touches on issues of fate, folk worldview, similarity of thought with other works that may influence the artistic decision of the author.

Analysis of A Dream of Red Mansions Character Dialogue based on Speech Act Theory

Based on the speech act theory of J·L·Austin and J·R ·Searle, this paper takes some dialogues in Luo Guanzhong’s A Dream of Red Mansions as the research object, and analyzes the dialogues of the characters in the novel from the two dimensions of direct speech act and introduction speech act, so as to understand the implied meaning of the characters in the novel, the connotation and value of the work more deeply, which is helpful for readers to better understand the plot and character characteristics of A Dream of Red Mansions.

The Video Game Dialogue Corpus

This paper presents the Video Game Dialogue Corpus, the first large-scale, consistently coded, open source corpus of dialogue from video games. It contains over 6.2 million words of English dialogue from fifty games in the Role Playing Game (rpg) genre. This includes games produced between 1985 and 2020, rated for children, teenagers and adults, and in both ‘Western’ and ‘Japanese’ sub-genres. The corpus design is described, including custom data formats for representing branching dialogue. We demonstrate the use of the corpus by comparing the dialogue of female and male characters, where we find reflections of gendered language in other media as well as patterns that seem specific to video games. We provide the source code for a ‘self-inflating corpus’ – a pipeline that obtains the data then processes and parses it into a standard format. This makes the corpus available for teaching and research purposes, providing the first such resource for empirical analysis of video game dialogue.

This research is a descriptive qualitative research that aims to determine the form of directive speech acts behind the speech of autistic characters in Selenophile novels by Tisa TS and Agie Hatami. The data in this research is the dialogue of autistic characters in Selenophile novels, and the data source is Selenophile novels by Tisa TS and Agie Hatami. The data were collected using reading and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique used is the Miles and Huberman model which consists of several steps, namely: Data reduction, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study focus on directive speech acts seen from the aspect of form. Based on the speech of autistic characters, six forms of directive speech acts were found, namely orders, requests, invitations, advice, criticism and prohibitions.

Values of Humanity in the novel “Sang Saudagar” (Genetic Structural Research). Thesis. This study aims to find the human values contained in the novel “Sang Saudagar”. To achieve these objectives, this study used theory of text interpretation by the method of content analysis. The technique used in this study is a technique based on the theory of genetic. Research disclosure humanitarian values using qualitative research, the formal text of novel “Sang Saudagar” of Sultan Ali Bumi in the form of words, sentences, and discourse. The results showed that the novel “Sang Saudagar” contains many human values that exemplary by the readers. Human values are: 1) policy, 2) perseverance, 3) compassion, 4) justice, 5) self-control, and 6) quality. Medium of developing human values in the story is through the background story, view of life figuress, the character's mind, character dialogue, action figures and events of the story..

Application of machine learning algorithms to character interaction in single-player role-playing games

Character interaction in single-player role-playing games refers to the role interactions between the player character and the non-player characters (NPCs) in the game including dialogue, social interaction, cooperation, and competition, which are designed and implemented to achieve certain game goals and effects. This paper summarizes and compares machine learning algorithms applied to game development using a paper review and theoretical analysis, aiming to provide new solutions for optimizing and improving algorithms commonly used in game design. The ADEM algorithm can automate the evaluation of semantic relevance and logical coherence of character dialogues, but it is more costly in the pre-training phase and more difficult to perform domain adaptation for specific game content. The BERT algorithm can improve the speed of character dialogue generation through the training of unlabeled text, and then improve the flexibility of the dialogue through a small amount of labeled text for domain adaptation and fine-tuning, but it lacks in the generation of smooth and complex text and other aspects. The GAN algorithm can learn from a single or a small number of action sequences to achieve the transformation and mixing of character actions, thus generating multiple action gestures. However, its training process may suffer from problems such as pattern collapse leading to degradation in the quality of the generation, and it is also difficult to set a uniform objective criterion to determine the loss function.

Re-visioning Ayi Kwei Armah’s Fragments: A Corpus Stylistic Analysis Using Wmatrix

The numerous literary explorations of Ayi Kwei Armah’s novels reveal his aesthetic creativity and relevance in addressing African and diasporic issues that have contemporary relevance. Guided by two objectives, this corpus study set out to analyse the narration and thematisation of Armah’s Fragments (1970) through part-of-speech and semantic domain tags using Wmatrix. We compared Fragments as a target corpus with two other novels by Armah. Results of the analysis suggest that Armah alternates between homodiegetic narrative in character dialogues and monologues, which dominate the main heterodiegetic discourse narration. He also provides a critical perspective on the immediacy of a historic and instantaneous present by giving a specific past account that projects a possible continuity of events in Ghana and Africa. Additionally, Armah discusses the geographic mobility of characters as a metaphor for a quest for a place of being and identity. These findings illustrate the value of applying computational tools like Wmatrix to examine African literary texts and provide a base for further studies.

Women's Language Features that Used by Characters in Movie "Tinkerbell: Secret of The Wings"

This study entitled Women’s Language Features that Used by Character’s in Movie: “Tinkerbell: Secret of the Wings”. The aims to identifying of women’s language features and find out the function of the language in the movie based on theory applied. The data of this study was taken from observation and taking note the dialogue of characters on the movie using documentation method and the method applied was documentation method. The collected data were selected and put into categories of women’s language features and categorized their function which were descriptively analysed based on the theory applied. The result showed that 9 features and 5 function founded in the movie.
