Fibroepithelial Polyp Arising From the Nasal Septum: A Case Report and a Literature Review

Fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) is a benign tumor of mesodermal origin, which is mostly found on the skin. FEPs in the upper respiratory system are reported mostly originating from the oropharynx and larynx, and are rarely found in the nasal cavity. A 57-year-old female presented with a polyp-like lesion on the right nasal septal mucosa adjacent to the mucocutaneous junction. The mass was surgically removed, and a diagnosis of FEP was made based on the histopathological review. This is the first report of FEP arising from the nasal septum.

Fibrolipoma is one of the variants of lipoma. Lipoma is a rare benign tumour of upper aerodigestive tract, but occur commonly in limbs and trunk. We present a 65 year old man who presented with huge recurrent fibrolipoma of the larynx causing upper airway obstruction which recurred five (5) years after an initial endoscopic excision of a benign laryngeal lesion with histological diagnosis of fibro epithelial polyp.

Fibroepithelial polyps of the head and neck

Fibroepithelial polyps are benign polypoid lesions arising from the mesodermal tissue and are one of the most common cutaneous lesions, but are rare in the oral cavity and upper airway. Two cases are discussed here. A 40 year old male presented with cough of five months duration associated with an intermittent foreign body sensation in the throat. Examination revealed single smooth pinkish pedunculated mass hanging freely from the superior pole of the left tonsil. The patient underwent tonsillectomy and histopathological examination revealed features of fibroepithelial polyp. A 65 year old male chronic smoker presented with swelling in the mouth behind the upper teeth since two months. Examination of the oral cavity revealed a single, non-tender, firm, smooth pedunculated pink swelling just behind the upper incisor on the right side of hard palate; the mass was excised and found to be a fibroepithelial polyp. The diagnosis of fibroepithelial polyps is primarily by histopathological examination of the excised mass. The key to preventing the recurrence of that lesion is its surgical excision in toto along with elimination of the source of irritation that led to the lesion.

A huge fibro epithelial polyp of the vulva with myxoid stroma in Tunisian nulliparous woman

Introduction: Fibroepithelial polyps are a type of mesenchymal lesion that typically occurs in women of reproductive age. These lesions can be polypoid or pedunculated and are usually solitary. They are typically asymptomatic and do not grow larger than 5 cm in diameter. However, there are few reported cases of giant fibroepithelial polyps of the vulva. In these cases, tumors cause usually symptoms including bleeding, discharge and general discomfort (with sensation of a mass). Case Report: Here we report a painful giant fibro epithelial polyp on the left labia majora in a 47-year-old Tunisian nulliparous woman. The mass was pedunculated, firm, 10cm in diameter. It was excised and the histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of fibro epithelial polyp with myxoid stroma and abcesses. Conclusion: The current case is characterized by huge fibro epithelial polyp of the vulva, rare disorder which may cause symptoms resulting from its size. Abcesses can be added to the main complications of these tumors such as bleeding, discharge and superficial ulceration.

The Utility of Submitting Fibroepithelial Polyps for Histological Examination

The fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) is a common cutaneous lesion that is often removed for medical or cosmetic reasons. We examined the utility of submitting clinically diagnosed FEPs for routine microscopic examination. We reviewed 11500 consecutive cutaneous pathology reports. Materials submitted with the clinical diagnosis of FEP or a synonym were reviewed and the histopathologic slides were examined. A comparison group of specimens submitted with the clinical diagnosis of melanocytic nevus was reviewed. The biopsy reports were generated at a regional non-hospital-based dermatopathology laboratory providing service to physicians (dermatologists and nondermatologists) practicing ambulatory medicine predominantly within a 4-state region (Ind, Ky, Tenn, and WVa). Of 1335 clinical specimens submitted as FEPs, there were 5 malignant tumors. In the comparison group of 697 clinically diagnosed melanocytic nevi, there were 6 malignant tumors. In comparison with clinically diagnosed melanocytic nevi, the likelihood that a lesion clinically diagnosed as FEP would be a malignant tumor on histological examination is very low (relative risk, 0.4). None of the lesions clinically diagnosed as FEPs by dermatologists proved to be malignant. Our data suggest there is an extremely low prevalence of malignancy in lesions clinically diagnosed as FEPs. We conclude that cutaneous lesions diagnosed as typical FEPs by dermatologists need not be submitted for microscopic examination.
