Ethno-Medicobotanical Survey in Dharwad-Plants Used for Jaundice

Dharwad district is situated at an elevation of 678 m. above MSL. This district is adjacent to Western Ghats. There are several herbal practitioners who depend mostly on the locally available plants. There is no published data on the ethno-medico botanical study of this district and hence an extensive survey was undertaken between 1999-2001. More than 200 traditional herbal practitioners were contacted, amongst whom 54 are effectively treating the jaundice. Twenty five species belonging to 18 families used for curing jaundice in Dharwad district of Karnataka have been recorded. Amongst these species, the most commonly used are Eclipta prostrata L., Plumbago zeylanica L., Ricinus communis L., Balanites aegyptlaca (L) Delile., Phyllanthus niruri L . and Tinospora cordifolia Miers. The method of preparation of medicines disclosed by few of the practitioners are discussed.

Efficacy of various fungicides on the management of rice blast disease caused by Pyricularia oryzae (Cav.) under field condition in Dharwad district of Karnataka

Rice blast caused by Pyricularia oryzae, Cav. (synonym Pyricularia grisea Sacc. The anamorph of Magnaporthe grisea), is one of the most destructive and wide spread diseases. The results of present study revealed that, after 14 days of second spray, least PDI of 12.95 and 13.23 was noticed in Picoxystrobin 22.52% w/w SC@ 1200 ml/ha and750 ml/ha, respectively followed by Picoxystrobin 22.52% w/w SC @ 600 ml/ha with a PDI of 13.43 where as Picoxystrobin 7% + Propiconazole 12% SC 600 ml/ha recorded the PDI of 16.56 and Tricyclazole 75% WP @ 400 g/ha recorded the PDI of 16.89 when compared to maximum PDI of 41.55 in untreated control.

Coping Strategies of farm women during Corona pandemic in North Karnataka

Indian population depends on agriculture for their livelihood and they face many problems like flood, drought but COVID-19 was new challenge to the farmers. It created many problems like non availability of labour, equipments, transport facilities, storage facilities, marketing and many more. The study was conducted in Dharwad district of Karnataka during 2020 for 60 farm women from two villages of Hubli taluk by simple random method. The results revealed that 55 per cent of the farm women were in the age group of 31-50 years with medium sized family. Around 88.00 per cent knew COVID-19/Corona is a viral disease and cent per cent of the respondents knew that cough and fever were the sympots of Carona and should stay at home and not to go for work also. Three fourth of the farm women (78.33) expressed that they used to consume hot water. Indigenous practices like turmeric in hot water and ginger tea are the regular practice of the people and regularly they wash all vegetables and fruits before consumption. Eighty per cent said they are aware of only few things to develop immunity against Covid-19. Efforts by different departments should be made to create awareness regarding farming families health and other problems.

Attitudes in Values in Life among Rural PU College Students

The study was undertaken to explore the attitudes of rural PU college students regarding values in life. Objectives: 1. To explore the values in life among rural PU College students. 2. To find out an association between attitude scores of values in life among rural PU College students with their socio – demographic variables. Methodology: to achieve the objectives of the study quantitative approach was used with descriptive design. The setting of this study was government PU College of Byahatti, Dharwad district of Karnataka. Study population was —PU college students. Non Probability Purposive sampling technique was adopted and the sample size was 30. Findings— Regarding the socio-demographic variables majority 53.33% belongs to 17 years, 56.66% of participants were males, 53.33% of participants are from first year PUC, among the participants 83.33 were Hindus and were vegetatrians, majority 50% of participant’s fathers education was primary whereas 66.66% of their mothers had primary education. About the occupation of the father 73.33% of them doing agriculture and 90% of the mothers were home maker. Majority 53.33% of participants belonged to joint family. 63.33% of participants had school/college as their source of information. Majority 63.33% of participants were neutral in their attitudes regarding values in life. The assessment of association of attitude on values in life with demographic variables revealed that their no significant association except occupation of mother.

‘They had to Go’: Indian Older Adults’ Experiences of Rationalizing and Compensating the Absence of Migrant Children

In transnational families, it is often the older adults who are left-behind or choose to stay behind. Currently the population aged 60 years and older in India constitutes over 7 percent of the total population (1.25 billion) and is projected to triple in the next four decades. In the past family has been the major source of support in later life. One of the consequences of increased mobility is the decreasing role of family in care provision. The Indian middle-class norms on higher education, which stressed on engineering and medicine, have resulted in professionally educated children leaving the parental home to seek work and thus family life in other geographical locations. In this paper we examine how transregional and transnational mobilities and the resulting absences impact the lives of older adults. We draw upon 37 in-depth interviews conducted in Dharwad district of Karnataka, India. The results show that older adults employ two strategies of rationalizing absence and compensating absence of migrant children. These strategies reflect the resilience of the older adults to make sense of this trans-local family life, that in a previous generation they were not aware of.

Socio-cultural determinants of breast feeding practices in Dharwad district of Karnataka

WHO recommends mothers worldwide to exclusively breastfeed infants for the child's first six months to achieve optimal growth, development and health. The infant mortality rate in India is 40/1000 live births and 31/1000 live births in Karnataka according to NFHS-4 report released in 2013. In India, breastfeeding is culturally well accepted but inadequately practiced, partly due to ignorance. Lack of knowledge, prevailing misconceptions and cultural taboos significantly contribute to undesirable breastfeeding practices such as delayed initiation and discarding of colostrum. In this context the present study was conducted to study the knowledge, attitude and breast feeding practices among the lactating mothers in Dharwad district of Northern Karnataka. A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural and urban areas of Dharwad district, Karnataka. The population of the study consisted of mother -infant dyads, where the infants were in the age group of 3 months to 24 months and their mothers from rural as well as urban area of the district. The sample comprised of 300 women of whom 200 were from rural area and 100 from urban area in the age range of 17-45 years. The tools used for the study were Socio - economic status scale developed by Aggarwal et al. (2005) and a self structured questionnaire to document the mother and child health characters, demographic profile, feeding practices, patterns and knowledge of mothers towards breast feeding. Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (1999) was used to assess maternal attitude towards infant feeding and information regarding feeding choice. The results indicated that 56.33 per cent breastfed the baby within 1hr and 26 per cent fed after 3 days. Majority of the mothers fed colostrum (71.67%) and 28.33 per cent discarded the colostrum. 51.33 per cent mothers gave prelacteal feeds. 48.7 per cent mothers practiced exclusive breast feeding. Majority of mothers both in urban and rural area had medium level knowledge and attitude towards breast feeding. Breast feeding knowledge had significant association with feeding practices while SES had no impact.

Association of cropping system over the period in Dharwad district of Karnataka

Global warming is projected to have significant impacts on conditions affecting agriculture, including temperature, carbon dioxide, glacial run-off, precipitation and the interaction of these elements. Assessment of the effects of global climate changes on agriculture might help to properly anticipate and adapt suitable farming practices to maximize agricultural production. Hence, present study were conducted with the objective to know association of cropping system over the period in Dharwad district of Karnataka. Data used for the study were collected from Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Karnataka, Bangalore for the crops like chilli, maize, groundnut, sorghum, cotton and soybean. Only two parameters considered namely area and price and the method used is co-efficient of concordance/Kendall w-co-efficient. Both area and price study revealed the association in cropping system over the years.

Experience with the system of rice intensification for sustainable rainfed paddy farming systems in India

ABSTRACTPrinciples of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), an agroecological methodology for improving rice crop performance, were introduced in the Dharwad district of Karnataka, India, in 2008 by an NGO wanting to improve the sustainability of rainfed paddy-farming systems. Farmer field schools enabled 82 farmers to adopt and adapt SRI practices in the initial season. SRI’s alternative practices were found to contribute to healthier roots and more productive tillers, the average number of tillers per plant on farmers’ SRI and control plots being 19 and 7, respectively. SRI was found to require 87% less seed than with traditional methods; yet, it gave 40% more yield per unit area in a drought year. The economic returns per hectare were 76% greater. There was some early evidence of soil-fertility improvement, but this can only be assessed over longer periods of time. Three years after introduction, over 3,000 farmers had continued adopting SRI practices in the district. In another 3 years, the number using these new methods had reached almost 29,000 in Dharwad and neighboring districts.

Impact of KVK Interventions on Socio-economic Status of Beneficiary Households in Dharwad District

The government and non-government agencies have started many projects and programmes with an aim to eradicate poverty, unemployment and enhance income among the rural poor. The turning point and giant leap in this direction came with the establishment of Farm Science Centre or Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) by ICAR in 1974. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), the light house for rural people, is an innovative science based institution, which undertakes vocational training of farmers, farm women, and rural youths, conducts on-farm research for technology refinement and organizes frontline demonstration to promptly demonstrate the latest agriculture technologies to the farmers as well as the extension workers. The study was conducted in Dharwad district of Karnataka and KVK, Dharwad was purposively selected. Further, a sample of 40 respondents who were influenced by the three most important income and employment enhancing interventions namely household enterprise, vermicomposting and seed production were selected randomly. Thus, the total sample consisted of 120 respondents. It was clear that before the KVK intervention, majority of the respondents were under the low category of socio-economic status. These selected KVK interventions made farmers to generate adequate income, by acting as a subsidiary source of income. This led to the transformation of respondents from low socio-economic status to the medium category.

Quality of malt barley genotypes as influenced by integrated nutrient management andin situmoisture conservation practices

A field experiment was conducted during rabi seasons of 2013–14 and 2014–15 in farmers’ field at model watershed, Neeralkatti village, Dharwad district of Karnataka to study the quality of malt barley genotypes as influenced by integrated nutrient management and in situ moisture conservation practices in rainfed condition. The treatments comprised two main plots as land management practices viz., L1: Broad bed and furrow (BBF) and L2: Farmers’ practice (flat bed); two genotypes viz., G1: DWRB-73 and G2: BH-902 as sub-plots and sub-sub plots consisted of five integrated nutrient management practices viz., N1: RDF (50: 25: 0 N: P2O5: K2O kg/ha+7 t/ha FYM), N2: 75% N through urea+25% N2 through FYM and recommended P through inorganic, N3: 50% N through urea+50% N through FYM and recommended P through inorganic, N4: 75% N through urea+25% N through vermicompost and recommended P through inorganic and N5: 50% N through urea+50% N through vermicompost and recommended P through inorganic. Significantly higher protein content (10.4%), protein yield (220.4 kg/ha), higher malt recovery (88.5%), higher malt yield (1879 kg/ha) and higher reducing sugar content were observed from grains harvested with genotype DWRB-73 grown on broad bed and furrow along with application of RDF (50: 25: 0 N: P2O5: K2O kg/ha+7 t/ha FYM) compared to rest of the treatments. However, genotype DWRB-73 raised on flat bed with the application of RDF (50: 25: 0 N: P2O5: K2O kg/ha+7 t/ha FYM) recorded significantly higher total free phenol content (2.98 mg/g) compared to rest of the treatments.

An economic analysis on land use and cropping pattern in Dharwad district

Agriculture in India is one of the most important sectors of its economy. Agriculture accounts for 15 per cent of India’s GDP (2012). It is still the single largest contributor to the GDP and plays a vital role in the overall socio-economic development of country. Agriculture mainly depends on the natural resource that is land. Land availability, type of land and soil type are the main determinants of crops to be grown. Land utilization pattern and cropping pattern differs from one region to other. So, the present study was undertaken to analyse the land use pattern and cropping pattern in Dharwad district of Karnataka. Study was based on both primary and secondary data. Total sample size was 150. Data were analyses using statistical tools like Markov analysis and tabular analysis. Results of the study revealed that, in case of land utilization pattern, forest area retained its share of 71.5 per cent and lost remaining 28.5 per cent to agriculture land (13.6 %), cultivable waste land (7.70%), fallow land (2.80 %), Cultivable waste land lost its share to land not available for cultivation (54.60 %) and forest (45.40 %). Agriculture land lost its share to forest land (53.20 %), cultivable waste land (20.30 %) and land not available for cultivation (16.90 %). Cropping intensity in all the talukas of Dharwad district namely Dharwad, Hubli, Kalagakagi, Kundagol and Navalgund were 155.27 per cent, 136.77 per cent, 146.88 per cent, 157.61 per cent and 177.44 per cent respectively. Highest cropping intensity was observed in Navalgund taluka, indicates that efficient utilization of land in Navalgund taluka compared to other talukas of Dharwad district due to canal irrigation facility available to the sample farmers. Second highest cropping intensity was observed in Navalgund taluka . There major proportion of the area was occupied by chilli (18.84 %), sorghum (6.24 %), cotton (5.61 %), and very less proportion by red gram (2.25 %) during Kharif. During Rabi and Summer, major proportion of the area was occupied by chickpea and groundnut. It is due to attention given by the sample farmers towards yield improvement of food grain crops so that balance could be maintained in the food grain basket. Efficiency with which we are cultivating the land is indicator by cropping intensity. So cropping intensity were increased by more effective utilization of land by growing two to three crops in a year.

Occurence of the Pacific Golden Plover, Plucialis fulva in Irrigation tanks of Dharwad district, Karnataka (India)

A project survey conducted in February and March 1992 in the Dharwad district of Karnataka, funded by the British Oriental Bird Club, observed a flock of 30 Pacific Golden Plovers near Hawanagi village. Identifying the species presented challenges due to overlapping characteristics and lighting conditions. Notable features included body size resembling a partridge, distinctive plumage patterns, and plover-like movements. These observations suggest the presence of the P. fulva species, previously not reported in the region. Further exploration of coastal areas and freshwater habitats is recommended to confirm the species' occurrence.
