Urban Road Transport Infrastructure Planning and Development Implications on Socio-Economic Growth in the City of Douala, Cameroon

Cities are the major contributors to socio- economic growth with easy access to amenities which stem through road transport infrastructure development. This study was conducted to assess urban road transport infrastructure planning and examine development implications on socio-economic growth in the City of Douala. A descriptive research design was used with primary and secondary data collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Results revealed that, transport infrastructure in Douala have been structured through urban development planning policy which influences surface spatial expansion of socio- economic activities. The planning policies have contributed to the rapid expansion and growth through the initiations of master plan, land use plan and sector plan. Infrastructural development on road transport depicts a physical expansion and construction of road networks which influences the socio-economic growth of the study area. Stakeholders’ actions on construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation, investments and maintenance of road infrastructure have helped to curb down some transportation challenges and creates easy access to facilities within different sectors of the study area. However, road transport infrastructure which is well-developed boasts socio-economic activities and growth. The state of road transport network, its diversity and characteristic features is defined by its prevalence within different areas in Douala. Contrarily, other transport infrastructures which are not functioning appropriately due to lapses in physical planning possess enormous implications on transportation in the study area. The conclusion drawn was that the manner in which urban planning policies are implemented determines the level of development in road transport infrastructure and socio-economic growth of Douala. The study recommends an effective application of planning policies to be integrated by implicating all the actors of urban managers and transportation planners for improved growth in the study area.

Index of development of transport infrastructure as a factor of sustainable development of the coastal zone of the Sea of Azov, Russia

As a zone of interaction between land and sea, coastal zones are becoming a strategic area for achieving a sustainable expansion of economic space. The object of study is the coastal zone of the Sea of Azov (Rostov Region and Krasnodar Territory). The subject of the study is an assessment of the dynamics of transport infrastructure development index as a factor in the sustainable development of the coastal zone of the Sea of Azov.Methodological approaches to assessing the sustainable development of the territory were based on a methodology based on methods of system analysis, mathematical modeling, and GIS technologies. An indicator has been formulated that considers the area of the territory, the population, the length of public roads of local importance, the shipment of goods of local production, the work and services performed on their own, in order to measure the ‘economic’ load on the transport infrastructure.The analysis of the state of the transport infrastructure of the regions of the coastal zone for the period from 2015 to 2021 was carried out. Based on an analysis of the transport infrastructure index, it was concluded that the attraction of municipalities to the Rostov agglomeration, together with the strengthening of social, trade and infrastructure contacts with megacities will lead to a further increase in the anthropogenic load on the territory. The areas studied of the Krasnodar Territory belong to the Northern Economic Zone – a territory with a diversified economy, characterised by cross‐border links with neighboring regions.Highways are the most important link in the transport and logistics system. The level of development and the technical condition of the road network have a significant and diverse impact on the economic and social development of both the state as a whole and it individual regions.

Analysis of Spatiotemporal Evolution of Coordinated Development Between Transportation Infrastructure and Ecological Environment in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

The coupling and coordinated development of transportation infrastructure and ecological environment is an important way to achieve win-win economic, social, and ecological benefits. This study analyzes the coupling and coordinated development between transportation infrastructure and ecological environment in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Based on panel data from 11 provinces in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2007 to 2022, establish their respective indicator systems and use entropy method to measure the comprehensive level of the two. Through the perspective of spatiotemporal differentiation, this study analyzes the changes in the coupling and coordinated development level of transportation infrastructure and ecological environment in 11 provinces. It is found that the overall coupling and coordinated development level of each province has significantly improved, but there are obvious regional differences. In the future, each province should formulate more precise and effective policy measures based on its own actual situation, strengthen regional cooperation and communication, and jointly promote the coupling and coordinated development of transportation infrastructure and ecological environment protection in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Foreign Economic Activities of The Russian Federation: Contemporary Problems and Prospects

Modern conditions for the development of foreign economic activity of the Russian Federation are formed under the influence of many factors, including international sanctions, economic diversification, development of transport and digital infrastructure, as well as active international cooperation. In the context of global economic and political changes, the Russian Federation seeks to adapt and look for new opportunities to strengthen its position in the world market. The article identifies the features of the organization of foreign economic activity in the Russian Federation taking into account the sanctions pressure, in particular, reflects the features of the decline in foreign trade, limited access to international fi nance, difficulties in international settlements, change of trading partners, problems with technology imports, problems with logistics. The article analyzes the main problems faced by the Russian Federation in its foreign economic strategy. In the article, the author examines in detail the main problems faced by the Russian Federation in the formation of its foreign economic strategy, and within the framework of each problem, considers the prospects for its solution, taking into account the established development trends, such as: strengthening economic cooperation with Asian countries, in particular with China and India, as a strategic priority; the use of new technologies and innovations to increase the competitiveness of Russian goods in world markets; development of transport and logistics infrastructure to improve export opportunities. The article reflects the aspect of a comprehensive approach to solving current problems and implementing strategic tasks aimed at sustainable development of foreign economic activity of the Russian Federation in the long term.

Accumulation characteristics and source analysis of microplastics derived traffic of soil in the Tibetan Plateau

The development of transportation infrastructure can stimulate economic growth. However, the environmental and human health risks associated with the release of traffic-derived microplastics (MPs) into the ecosystem must also be considered. This study examined four types of soil samples collected from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau along the Gemang Highway. The abundance, size, morphology, and types of MPs were analyzed using laser direct infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy to gain a better understanding of their distribution and characteristics. The average abundance of MPs in the study area was 2,247.92 ± 2,053.82n/kg. It showed the characteristics of wasteland (4,726.67 ± 2956.76n/kg) > wolfberry plantation (3,294.44 ± 2,881.93n/kg) > sandy land (1,519.44 ± 282.65n/kg) > soil along the highway (1,144.44 ± 611.01n/kg). 67.25% of MPs had a particle size of less than 100 μm, posing greater environmental risks. The 6 factors identified by the PMF model suggested a variety of potential sources of MPs and highlighted their connections to the transportation sector. The ecological risk assessment of MPs demonstrated a significant degree of risk, with particular concern regarding more toxic plastics use. This study provides fundamental data for the source analysis and ecosystem risk assessment of MPs derived traffic.

Impact National Strategic Program Transportation Sector On Export Performance In Indonesia

The study aims to identify the impact of transport infrastructure development policies on Indonesian export performance. The case on this study is the National Strategic Program (PSN) of the transport sector, which has begun to implemented in stages over time and between different locations since 2017. The study also compares the impact of policy between regions on Java Island and regions outside Java Island. By using the Callaway and Sant'Anna Difference-in-differences (CSDID) method, the study analysed the impact of policy interventions on the PSN province (province in which there is a PSN transport sector) compared to the Non PSN Province (Province in which there is no PSN Transport sector). The results of the study found that after the intervention of policy and the availability of international ports, the Province of PSN has a 33,9% higher export performance than the Non-PSN Province. The research also found that policy interventions had a significant impact partially in the region outside of Java. The research also found that policy interventions only partially had a significant impact in the region outside of Java, because the existence of policy intervention and the availability of international ports, the PSN Province outside Java Island had an export performance of 59,5% higher than the Non-PSN Province

The Influence of Attractions, Facilities and Accessibility on Tourist Satisfaction at Parai Tenggiri Beach, Bangka Regency

This research aims to determine the influence of attractions, facilities and accessibility on tourist satisfaction. This type of research is quantitative descriptive research with multiple analysis methods. The total population in this study was 23,112 people based on January 2021 to December 2021, while the sample used the Slovin formula to be 100 respondents. The research results show that facilities and accessibility have a significant effect on tourist satisfaction. The natural beauty of the beach, with white sand and granite rocks, as well as recreational activities such as fishing and diving, add to the visitor experience. Adequate facilities and good accessibility also increase tourist comfort and satisfaction, encouraging them to return. Managers are expected to improve natural attractions, introduce new activities, and improve the quality of facilities such as toilets and eating places. Accessibility must also be considered with the development of transportation infrastructure and clear information about locations. Current Status of Logistics Infrastructure Associated with the Development of Vietnam’s Sea Tourism

With a coastline of 3260 kilometers, 2.773 islands, and 28 coastal provinces, Vietnam has a great potential for sea tourism development. One of the factors affecting this development is logistics infrastructure. This research paper aims to analyze all of the logistics infrastructure factors including highways, railways, inland waterways, seaway, and airways; and the connection between logistics transport infrastructure and marine tourism development. The result shows that coastal tourism areas have made strong investments in logistics infrastructure and future planning. However, the lack of synchronization in transport networks connecting tourist destinations, the adaptation of the seaport systems and waterway transports, along with the overall infrastructure serving the needs of accommodations and tourism services have not met the increasing demand. Based on these bases, this paperwork proposes solutions to developing the logistics infrastructure associated with the development of Vietnam’s sea tourism.

Spatial Development Strategy of the Russian Federation: Old Problems, New Solutions

The current Spatial Development Strategy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025 has not solved a number of tasks in this area. The level of differentiation of the socio-economic development of the subjects of the Russian Federation, their budgetary and infrastructural security remains high. Citizens have not been provided with equal access to State-guaranteed services. The current mechanisms for the allocation of productive forces and the resettlement of the population are often non-systemic in nature. In addition, the external and internal conditions for the development of the country's economy and social sphere have changed significantly by now. The Russian Federation includes 4 new regions. The concentration of population and infrastructure facilities in the largest urban agglomerations hinders the overcoming of regional imbalances. The task of ensuring the unity of the legal, economic, financial, social, cultural and educational space remains urgent. The issue of the ongoing population decline in the territories of the North, Siberia and the Far East, as well as the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, is acute. Insufficient development of transport and energy infrastructure limits the potential of the regions, hinders the solution of tasks to increase the connectivity of the country's territory. In this regard, the task of smoothing out interregional imbalances by maximizing the full disclosure of the regions and municipalities’ own potential, and creating a comfortable living environment for citizens throughout the country is of strategic importance. This is the aim of the draft Strategy of spatial Development of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030 with a forecast up to 2036. The article attempts to answer the question: how much is the new version of the Strategy able to solve the accumulated problems in this area?

The Spatial Spillover Effects of Transportation Infrastructure on Regional Economic Growth—An Empirical Study at the Provincial Level in China

This study examines the spatial spillover effects of transportation infrastructure on regional economic growth, utilizing panel data from 31 provincial-level administrative divisions in China from 2003 to 2022. Using the spatial Durbin model (SDM) and three distinct spatial weight matrices—0–1 adjacency, spatial economic–geographical nested, and GDP-based economic distance matrices—this study comprehensively analyzes the multifaceted impacts of transportation infrastructure. The results show that transportation infrastructure significantly promotes economic growth in both local and neighboring regions across all spatial weight matrices. The total effect is most pronounced in geographically proximate regions, with a coefficient of 7.845 (p < 0.01). Regions with similar economic development levels also show strong collaborative effects, with a coefficient of 2.074 (p < 0.01), although the marginal effect of transportation infrastructure diminishes. Furthermore, adjustments in industrial structure and innovation inputs demonstrate a short-term inhibitory effect on economic growth, highlighting the need for synchronized development of transportation infrastructure alongside industrial and innovation policies. This study incorporates multi-dimensional spatial weight matrices to systematically reveal the direct and indirect impacts of transportation infrastructure on regional economies, providing essential empirical support for regional coordination and infrastructure investment policies. The findings offer valuable insights for infrastructure planning in other regions, particularly in formulating policies that promote cross-regional economic cooperation and optimize resource allocation.

Sustainable transportation infrastructure in Indian cities of different size-class: towards a research and policy agenda

Owing to the fact that the planning and management of urban transportation systems are convoluted ventures, a sound number of cities in India, especially those lacking strong institutional and financial means – principally small and medium-sized cities – have become incapable of efficiently addressing their transportation challenges. Drawing on a pan-India comparative research on 54 cities, the present study well-demonstrates a previously undetected relationship between size-class of Indian cities and their existing state of sustainable transport infrastructure development. The results speak in accordance with the notion that betterment in non-motorized and public transit infrastructure is typically associated with increasing size of cities. Accordingly, this research argues that with regard to the production of knowledge in the field of urban transportation and associated policymaking, academicians and planners can rethink and branch out the understanding of transport sustainability beyond big-metropolises of the country. This study, therefore, enunciates in support of the need for a small and medium-sized city-based research and policy agenda that can focus on eliminating the ‘sizism’ which has conventionally influenced urban theory and policymaking in India and has led to the condition of such cities as the least understood and perhaps least studied element of urban and regional transport systems.

Performance of the polyurethane foam injection technique for road maintenance applications

Road infrastructure plays an important role in strengthening transportation and driving the economic advancement of countries. However, the increasing traffic volume has accelerated road deterioration, particularly at critical points like bridge-road junctions. Traditional repair methods involving demolition and reconstruction lead to extended closures and high costs. This study explores the polyurethane (PU) foam injection technique as an alternative solution, which can reduce both repair time and costs. The research evaluates the application of PU foam in various road projects across Thailand, highlighting its ability to repair pavement surfaces and structures, even in severely damaged areas. Despite its advantages, the use of PU foam faces challenges due to a lack of standardized quality control. This paper proposes a set of working guidelines for PU foam injection, aimed at key stakeholders such as the Department of Highways, the Department of Rural Roads, and the Department of Local Administration. The findings underline the importance of establishing standardized methods to ensure the long-term effectiveness of PU foam in road maintenance. Future research should focus on refining these guidelines for diverse road conditions to support the sustainable development of national transportation infrastructure

THE IMPACT OF LAND, SEA, AND AIR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN G7 COUNTRIES

This research analyzes the influence of road length, rail length, containers traffic, air freight, GFCF, and labor force on economic growth. This study uses quantitative methods with G7 countries as research objects during 2010-2021. Panel data consisting of 84 observations was analyzed with the help of Eviews12 software. The statistical analysis used in this research is the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method, with the Fixed Effect Model chosen as the best model for interpreting the research results. The findings show that the road length, container traffic, air freight, GFCF, and the labor force have a positive and significant influence. Meanwhile, only the rail length does not have a significant effect on economic growth. Based on the results of this research, the theoretical implication of this research is the development of transportation infrastructure, especially road length, containers, air freight, GFCF, and labor force can increase economic growth in a country. So countries must consider spending on developing transportation infrastructure. Meanwhile, practically, this research can be used as study material in considering infrastructure development because the negative impact caused by errors in infrastructure development can be a waste of budget.

Methodology for improving the assessment of the economic efficiency of transport infrastructure development

Transport infrastructure, especially railway infrastructure, plays a key role in economic development, ensuring efficient movement of goods and people. It is characterised by high capital intensity, long operational lifespans, and generation of socio-economic effects. Therefore, there is a need to improve the methodology for assessing the economic efficiency of creating and developing transport infrastructure objects. The traditional approach to evaluation is based on discounting cash flows. When applying this method, significant capital investments are compared with devalued effects in subsequent years due to discounting, during which the infrastructure object reaches the specified estimated load. Moreover, it does not consider the fact that the transport infrastructure benefits and holds value not only for the current generation but also for the future one. Additionally, it, as an economic good, cannot be seen as a one-timely consumed product: this transportation service cannot be accumulated. For a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of the efficiency, particularly in the case of railway transport, it is proposed to consider the results of long-term operation of the transport infrastructure at full (estimated) load not in the future but in the present (present сontinious). The economic assessment indicators include initially invested and adjusted capital, annual effect, efficiency ratio, and the value of the transport infrastructure object. The research results aim to provide an adequate assessment of project implementation efficiency in the field in question. In the future, the methodology can be enhanced by defining risks of not ensuring normal infrastructure load throughout the entire calculation period as well as by assessing the reduction in profitability or increase in transportation costs.

Solving Transport Infrastructure Investment Project Selection and Scheduling Using Genetic Algorithms

The development of transport infrastructure is crucial for economic growth, social connectivity, and sustainable development. Many countries have historically underinvested in transport infrastructure, necessitating more efficient strategic planning in the implementation of transport infrastructure investment projects. This article addresses the selection and scheduling of transport infrastructure projects, specifically within the context of utilizing pre-allocated funds within a multi-annual budget investment program. The current decision-making process relies heavily on expert judgment and lacks quantitative decision support methods. We propose a genetic algorithm as a decision-support tool, framing the problem as an NP-hard 0–1 multiple knapsack problem. The proposed genetic algorithm (GA) is unique for its matrix-encoded chromosomes, specially designed genetic operators, and a customized repair operator to address the large number of invalid chromosomes generated during the GA computation. In computational experiments, the proposed GA is compared to an exact solution and proves to be efficient in terms of quality of obtained solutions and computational time, with an average computational time of 108 s and the quality of obtained solutions typically ranging between 85% and 95% of the optimal solution. These results highlight the potential of the proposed GA to enhance strategic decision-making in transport infrastructure development.

Providing financial and economic security of projects for the construction of transport hubs

Aim. The goal is to develop an approach for evaluating the economic efficiency of constructing passenger transport hubs, providing financial and economic security of investment projects and promoting the effective operation of these hubs, while considering the external impacts of ongoing projects. Materials and Methods. The study involved collecting and analyzing data from scientific articles, papers, and open online sources. Economic assessment and investment analysis were used to evaluate the efficiency of passenger transport hub construction projects. The research also drew on scientific publications discussing economic descriptions of transport hubs, using the Volkovskaya TPU project, developed by Archidi LLC by order of the St. Petersburg Transport Committee. Results. The main scientific result is an approach for economically assessing transport hub projects. This approach includes assessing the public effectiveness by factoring in benefits such as reduced travel time and decreased load on the city’s road network within the project’s cash flows. The proposed approach was tested using the Volkovskaya transport hub construction project. Conclusion. Finally, the authors developed recommendations for socio-economic assessment of passenger transport hub construction projects, considering both the commercial and social effectiveness of their operation. The results of the research are valuable for regional authorities involved in urban transport infrastructure development and companies financing the construction of passenger transport hubs.

Транспортная безопасность современного государства как социоюридический феномен

Introduction. The article is devoted to the issues concerning transport security – a complex socio-juridical formation, an element of national security of the state. Awareness of the determinacy of transport security by the political influence of the state in the international sphere contributed to the recognition of the development of transport infrastructure and its improvement as a national priority of the state. The historiographical analysis of the research subject reveals a number of scientific researches, which highlighted certain aspects of the formation of the idea of transport security and its implementation. However, transport security of the modern state as a socio-legal phenomenon remains uncharacterised. Methods. The research is based on the principles of comprehensive study of legal processes and phenomena, the integrity of theory and practice. The main methodological approaches were systemic and value-based ones. In the course of the research methods of periodisation, retrospective analysis, functional, formal-legal methods, method of content analysis of legal acts were used. An important role belonged to the sociological method, which made it possible, through the questionnaire surveys conducted by the author of the article, to determine the specifics of the subject composition of the transport security system and the peculiarities of law enforcement practice in the field of transport security in the Russian Federation. Results. The degree of development in legal science of questions concerning transport security is revealed; in the context of ideas about the modern state the content of the concept of “transport security” is specified; transport security and its maintenance are characterised as systems; internal affairs bodies are described as a subject of its ensuring; on the basis of independently conducted sociological researches the features of application of legal norms in the sphere of ensuring transport security are determined.

Wakatobi Development Priorities as A Sustainable Tourism Destination Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process Method

Wakatobi is one of the tourist destinations renowned for its underwater beauty, holding great potential to be developed as a sustainable tourism destination. This research aims to determine the priorities for sustainable tourism development in Wakatobi using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The AHP method is employed to identify and prioritize various criteria and sub-criteria contributing to sustainable tourism development. Based on the research findings, infrastructure and facilities were found to be the highest priorities, with a focus on improving transportation infrastructure and public facilities. These findings indicate that the development of transportation infrastructure and public facilities is crucial to support the sustainability of tourism in Wakatobi.

Does transport infrastructure development inhibit firm-level employment fluctuations? Evidence from national expressway construction in China

Employment Stabilization has always been a key focus of the Chinese government's work. Exploring the influencing factors of employment stability is of great significance for promoting the realization of high-quality employment. Based on the manually collected national expressway data and the China Industrial Enterprise Database from 1998 to 2015, this paper conducts an empirical study on the impact of transportation infrastructure development on enterprise employment fluctuations using the multi-timepoint difference-in-differences method. We find that the development of expressways has a significant inhibitory effect on enterprise employment fluctuations. Compared with areas where expressways have not been opened, the opening of expressways reduces local enterprise employment fluctuations by approximately 0.9 %. The development of expressways affects the demand side or supply side of the enterprise labor force through market scale effects, labor allocation effects, etc., thereby influencing enterprise employment fluctuations. The impact of expressway development on employment fluctuations of enterprises with different ownership natures, different economic regions, and different scales varies to some extent. Finally, this paper proposes relevant policy recommendations, providing practical and effective references for coordinating and promoting the goal of Employment Stabilization under the background of the strategy of building a strong transportation country.

Studying the relationship between CO2 emissions and transport infrastructure development indicators

Subject. The article addresses the problem of increasing the volume of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere, environmental aspects of transport industry development in the Ural, Siberian, and Far Eastern Federal District. Objectives. We focus on the development of a tool to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from transport infrastructure. Methods. The study draws on methods of logical, statistical and econometric analysis. Results. We tested a regression model built on the basis of data reflecting the development of transport infrastructure in the regions of the Ural, Siberian, and Far Eastern Federal District in 2017–2021. The paper found that a particular impact on the volume of carbon dioxide emissions is exerted by the degree of depreciation of fixed assets of transport enterprises. An increase in the cost of fuel also has a negative effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Conclusions. The findings can be used in the reorganization process of transport systems to improve environmental performance in the regions.
