Use of shrimp farming waste in the production of biomaterials for sustainable agriculture and mitigation of environmental damage

AbstractBackgroundDue to the environmental degradation caused by shrimp farming in Brazilian mangrove ecosystems, it is of great importance to develop techniques capable of inserting waste into the production chain, strengthening the premise of sustainable shrimp farming development due to its economic and social impact. In this work, solid residues from shrimp farming were used as a slow‐release fertilizer (SRF) in formulations that also contain chitosan, montmorillonite, and urea.ResultsFertilizer granules produced without (FERT A) and with additional layers (FERT B) were characterized by elemental analysis (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen), obtaining values of 14.4%–18.4% for carbon, 5.6%–6.9% for hydrogen, and 12.3%–19.3% for nitrogen. The fertilizers had low C/N ratios of around 1.0–1.50, compared to a value of 0.87 for urea, the nitrogen fertilizer most widely used in Brazilian agriculture. Release tests in water showed the same release pattern in the first 5 min for FERT A and FERT B, with <10% urea release. After 30 min, the release from the fertilizers progressively increased, reaching >60% after 1 day and a maximum of 95%–97% after 15 days. In the first 3 days of incubation in the soil, the releases of nitrogen from FERT A, FERT B, and conventional urea presented different patterns, with values of 32%, 10%, and 90%, respectively. After incubation for 25 days, FERT A and FERT B presented nitrogen releases lower than 78%, confirming the slow release of the nutrient from these fertilizers. Degradation experiments showed that the fertilizers were biodegradable in the soil, with degradation exceeding 60% after 30 days, indicating that they could be applied to the soil without leaving residues.ConclusionsThe fertilizer granules produced are SRFs that have the potential to increase the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization, reducing the frequency of applications and minimizing nitrogen losses in the soil. In addition, they enable the reuse of shrimp farming waste, producing a new material of agricultural interest.

A Comparison of Three Protein Sources Used in Medium-Sized Litopenaeus vannamei: Effects on Growth, Immunity, Intestinal Digestive Enzyme Activity, and Microbiota Structure

The type of protein source in diets has many effects on shrimp. In this study, Litopenaeus vannamei with an initial body weight of 3.68 ± 0.002 g were fed for 8 weeks on three experimental diets (isoproteic: 41.00%; isolipidic: 7.61%) that were formulated using fish meal (FM), Chlorella sorokiniana (CHL), and Clostridium autoethanogenum protein (CAP) as the primary protein sources, respectively. This study examined the growth, non-specific immunity, intestinal digestion, and microbiota of L. vannamei after the feeding experiment concluded. Compared to the FM group, the findings indicate that the weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of L. vannamei were notably enhanced via dietary CAP. The CHL group exhibited the highest levels of catalase (CAT), phenoloxidase (PO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in the gills of L. vannamei, whereas the FM group had the lowest levels. Conversely, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content showed the opposite trend. Both dietary CHL and CAP promoted the digestive enzyme activities of L. vannamei, with dietary CAP having a more pronounced promotional effect. An analysis of alpha diversity indicated that the consumption of dietary CHL substantially enhanced the abundance and diversity of microbiota in the intestinal tract of L. vannamei. Furthermore, the dietary CHL significantly increased the colonization of immune-associated beneficial bacteria and inhibited the colonization of pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract of L. vannamei, whereas dietary CAP mainly increased the colonization of growth-associated beneficial bacteria. Functional predictions showed that different dietary protein sources affect various metabolic activities and signaling pathways of L. vannamei, and some functions, including signal transduction, cell motility, and the immune system, were significantly enhanced in the CHL group. In summary, both dietary CHL and dietary CAP promoted growth and immunity in L. vannamei compared to dietary FM. The results of this study could be helpful for the sustainable development of shrimp farming.

Effect of Mangrove Cover on Shrimp Yield in Integrated Mangrove-Shrimp Farming

In recent decades, mangroves have been seriously devastated by shrimp farming development in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. As a result, integrated mangrove-shrimp farming has emerged as a potential solution to culture shrimps and protect mangroves. The present study aims to understand whether mangrove-to-pond cover ratios influence shrimp yields in an integrated mangrove-shrimp farming system. Five integrated mangrove-shrimp ponds in the Tam Giang Commune, Nam Can District, Ca Mau Province (Southern Vietnam) were chosen for this study. The study estimated that the mangrove-to-pond cover ratios ranged from 42.00 % to 72.50 %. The total shrimp yield per year (kg.ha-1 yr-1 ) was generally high, ranging from 76.62 to 249.09 (including 37.93 to 108.64 for the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius, 1798), and 38.69 to 140.45 for other shrimps, namely Penaeus indicus Milne Edwards, 1837, Penaeus merguiensis de Man, 1888, Metapenaeus ensis (De Haan, 1844), and Metapenaeus lysianassa (de Man, 1888)). Moreover, a strong positive correlation between the mangrove-to-pond cover ratios and the shrimp yields were observed (r > 0.71, P < 0.05). In conclusion the mangrove-to-pond cover ratios have a direct impact on the total shrimp yield. The mangrove-to-pond cover ratios should be 50 % to enhance shrimp yields in this system.

Productivity of Vannamei Shrimp Cultivation (Litopenaeus vannamei) in Intensive Ponds in Tegal City, Central Java Province

The failure of tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) farming could make farmers stop their cultivation activities. As an alternative, vannamei shrimp cultivation gives hope for productive, profitable, and sustainable cultivation. The development of shrimp farming in Tegal City is carried out through simple methods, intensive technology, and the use of Busmetik technology or mini-scale shrimp farming on plastic ponds. The high demand in the shrimp market continues to encourage farmers to increase their productivity by increasing stocking density. The purpose of this study is to determine the performance of vannamei shrimp cultivation which is cultivated intensively including yields, survival rate (SR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and shrimp growth in Tegal City, Central Java Province. The research was conducted from July to October 2019. The research method used was a case study with 16 plots of ponds, and the average area of the pond was 1000 m². Based on the results of the calculation, it can be seen that the average yield is 1,603 kg per pond with a stocking density of 100 fish/m², a survival rate (SR) is 85.6%, a feed conversion ratio (FCR) is 1.41 and the shrimp growth is 0.16 grams per day. Economically, based on the Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C ratio) of 1.46, vannamei shrimp cultivation in Tegal City is profitable so that shrimp farming can be carried out sustainably.

Short Communication on an Economic Burden of Infectious Diseases to Indian Shrimp Farming

Infectious diseases especially, Enterocytozoon Hepatopenaei (EHP), White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) infections and are the major constraints in the development of shrimp farming in India. A questionnaire-based survey covering an area of 7259 ha in 23 coastal districts based on multistage stratified sampling (n=909) was conducted to estimate the Probability of Disease Occurrence (PDO) and the economic loss due to diseases was estimated. Loss of production (t ha-1 crop-1) due to WSSV and EHP was 2.58 ± 0.32 and 1.80 ± 0.24 respectively. Additionally, the total employment loss due to diseases was estimated at 1.65 M man-days worth US$ 7.07 M. The results of the study revealed 49% as the overall probability of infectious disease occurrence in the country leading to an annual loss of 0.14 M ton of harvest worth US$ 1.02 B. Prioritizing the research and implementation of specific policies would help in reducing the losses due to infectious diseases in Indian shrimp farming.

This expert system designed to help the farmers in diagnosing disease early white shrimp and get information about the types of disease. In this expert system design, the user input symptoms suffered, then the output generated by the computer in the form of disease experienced by users and how to control the disease at white shrimp.

A review on pathogenic bacteria that potentially threaten the environment of aquaculture: controlling and aquaculture sustainability in Pontang, Serang

Pontang District located in Banten Bay has the potential for the development of shrimp farming. One of the challenges of shrimp farming is a disease caused by Vibrio bacterial. One way to control disease is to apply the principle of biosecurity to support sustainable aquaculture. In some cases, the Vibrio bacterial group is known to have caused serious illness in shrimp ponds. This paper reviews some of the literature on the concept of biosecurity in controlling disease for sustainable aquaculture that might be implemented in Pontang District. The role of local authorities is very important in the implementation of biosecurity. Disease control by farmers can be done by doing water management, good production processes and routine health monitoring.

Perception-based Indicator for Sustainability of Shrimp Culture in the Less Favorable Areas at Southern Coast of Yogyakarta

Shrimp farming has been introduced since the mid-1980s at the southern coast of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY). However, the industry was not well growing in the initial stage. The new shrimp development project also promoted in the early of 2000s, particularly in Jangkaran Village, Subdistrict of Temon, Kulon Progo District and Poncosari Village, Subdistrict of Srandakan, Bantul District, but many of shrimp farms fail because of shrimp diseases, lack of capital to recover and shrimp farming experiences. Recently, the shrimp culture industry experienced rapid expansion along the coast of the two districts. This study aimed to determine the profile and growing of shrimp farming at the southern coast of DIY and to identify the technical aspects, social, and economic indicators of sustainable shrimp culture in the less favorable areas. To identify the sustainability of current shrimp culture, the study develop four indicators consist of technical indicators (6 sub-indicators), economic indicators (9 sub-indicators), social indicators (7 sub-indicators), and environmental indicators (8 sub-indicator). The study was conducted during March to October 2014 by using a combination of literature study and survey at two selected villages: Jangkaran and Poncosari Villages. The total 82 respondents were interviewed; consist of shrimp farmers, coastal communities, community leaders, and local government. The study showed that the rapid growing of shrimp farming were caused by several factors, among others: (1) the existence of technological innovation in shrimp farming in the sandy soil areas, particularly the lower cost in the pond investment and the more easier of seawater collecting; (2) high price and market opportunities of the commodity; and (3) changes in the physical environment due to the threat of coastal erosion which damage the fisher livelihood, thus demanding adaptation strategies. Shrimp farmer in average managed 2,138 m2 and implemented intensive to super intensive cultivation technology, with an average stocking density of 144 shrimp/m2. Production per year in average reaches 25.9 ton/ha and generating revenue of IDR286.544.232 per year. The total cost of production is estimated at IDR210.590.175 per year, and generated a net profit of IDR75.954.057 per year. The perception based indicator of sustainability showed the environmental related issues were in average have a low value. Thus, environmental regulation of aquaculture is an important aspect to be considered in promoting sustainable development of shrimp farming at the southern coast of the province.

Developing detoxification and purification technologies of ponds with pesticide residue for organic tiger shrimp farming development

The technological improvement of marginal land was conducted through examination on three treatments; land soaking and washing (A), land remediation (B) and land reclamation (C). The highest average closure rate of klekap (66.667±5.774 %) was gained from B, and the highest average closure rate of Chaetomorpha sp (88.667±8.083 %) was derived from A. The Apocyclopas discovery through the study can become preliminary information to reveal the existence of Phronima Suppa, the indicator of tiger shrimp farming success. The land remediation (B), followed with contaminants detoxification employing plankton, is more effective in eliminating pesticide residue, depressing bacteria population and creating quality water and pond bottom soil according to the organic tiger shrimp production standard.

Improving pond aquaculture production on Lombok, Indonesia

Marine resources play an important role for the economy of Indonesia and the country is among the major aquaculture producers worldwide. This article presents the applicable conclusions of a study conducted in three communities in Sekotong, Lombok, which practice semi-intensive methods of pond-based aquaculture in a coastal mangrove estuary. The Indonesian government is supporting the local communities through subsidy programs with the aim to increase production and to enhance aquaculture as a viable livelihood opportunity. From our assessment we attempt to draw conclusions on ways to improve aquaculture as a sustainable livelihood, considering the social, economic and ecological settings. Key findings are a lack of knowledge coupled with problem-recognition on inefficient system conditions, which are limiting the ability to increase production. Poor pond quality in addition to the heavy degradation of the mangrove ecosystem leaves the pond system with unstable and seasonally fluctuating conditions. This hinders the potential for economic gains and the effectivity of government subsidy programs, which provide fish fry, seed and equipment. Stakeholder organizations are encouraged through government support, however, these efforts are not addressing or directed towards the underlying problem of pond-canal infrastructure, which is in part related to the poor pond conditions. We provide two recommendations, which our analysis demonstrates as potential mechanisms to improve social-ecological aquaculture development. (1) Government support should be tailored more carefully to local conditions prioritizing capacity building on good aquaculture practice as well as maintaining and monitoring pond conditions and in part by (2) focusing on the need for cooperation to develop and maintain pond and canal infrastructure. While this is a local case study, the examined system is likely similar to many other areas of pond aquaculture across the region, which have either failed in the development of shrimp farming or intend to further develop pond aquaculture in general.

Changes of shrimp farming in southwest coastal Bangladesh

Shrimp (Penaeus monodon) farming is a traditional aquaculture in southwest coastal Bangladesh. Changes in both the farming practice and yield of shrimp since the advent of commercial production in this area are evident in scientific studies. We assessed the historical perspective of shrimp farming indicating the major phase changes and present situation of the shrimp farming practice including recent changes in yield and cost-benefit. A systematic random sampling method was employed to conduct a total of 240 questionnaire surveys, 24 focused group discussions, and 60 key informant interviews in six sub-districts (upazila) from southwest coastal Bangladesh. We identified four major phase changes in the history of shrimp farming in southwest coastal Bangladesh and found that shrimp mixed culture is the most preferable form of extensive cultivation at present. Shrimp farmers’ perceptions about changes in shrimp yield and changes in availability of ecosystem services represent declining trends over the last two decades. For 2015, shrimp yield was not significantly different with respect to salinity levels. The net benefit from shrimp mixed culture in 2015 was 121,000 taka/ha, which is 2.35 times higher compared to the net benefit from only shrimp (51,500 taka/ha). In this context, promoting shrimp mixed cultivation could be a management solution for sustainable development of shrimp farming in southwest coastal Bangladesh. The National Shrimp Policy of the government also emphasized on promoting environment-friendly shrimp mixed cultivation for sustainable development of shrimp farming. However, more institutional support such as training, extension support, technical assistance, and credit facility is required to implement the policy.

Kajian Efektivitas Implementasi Program Demonstration Farm di Kecamatan Blanakan Kabupaten Subang

In recent years, shrimp farming have experienced a variety of problems, both technical and non-technical, causing the shrimp farm do not work properly (idle). In 2012 the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and fisheries formulate revitalization program which focused on the rehabilitation ponds channel through Demonstration Farm (Demfarm) program. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the implementation of the Demfarm program in the Blanakan District in Subang regency. The data has been analyze using qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats), and AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). The result of the study shows that Demfarm implementation in Blanakan District, Subang Regency is quite effective. Blanakan District in Subang Regency is an ideal area for shrimp farm, the application of Demfarm technology can improve the productivity of farms from 0-17 up to 7-75 tons / ha, the programs also help to establish the partnership system between farmers and the private sector. Shrimp farms have 0.148 IFE and 0.495 EFE, another most important thing for shrimp farming development in the Blanakan District is technology have 0.341. Shrimp farming worth to be developed, the value of Benefit Cost Ratio (B/C ratio) > 1, the Net Present Value (NPV) generated > 0 Break Event Point (BEP) the lowest production 7000 kg and the highest production is 7.500 kg, for BEP the lowest price is Rp60 000 and the highest price is Rp70.000

What drives the adoption of integrated shrimp mangrove aquaculture in Vietnam?

The development of shrimp farming in Vietnam has eroded the social-ecological resilience of the coastal ecosystem. Recent literature supports the idea that integrated mangrove-shrimp production systems can contribute to rebuilding this resilience in the Mekong Delta. Two experts panels, international and Vietnamese, were consulted to validate and weight drivers identified from literature that enable or constraint farmers to shift from extensive production system to integrated mangrove-shrimp system or to continue such integrated system. Though a combination of drivers is needed to enhance changes, two sets of drivers were given the highest weight. Experts considered the ecosystem function of the mangrove an enabling driver pushing farmers to plant mangrove in order to improve the pond's water quality and limit disease outbreaks. They perceived the drivers related to the current regulatory framework as constraining because these limit the financial return associated with integrated mangrove-shrimp systems. The analysis indicates that the adoption of these integrated systems requires more equitable distribution of benefits from shrimp and timber production between farmers and other stakeholder in these value chains. We recommend to develop a regulatory framework that can optimize the financial benefits of the integrated mangrove-shrimp production systems for farmers.

Enhancing Ecoefficiency in Shrimp Farming through Interconnected Ponds.

The future development of shrimp farming needs to improve its ecoefficiency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate water quality, flows, and nitrogen balance and production parameters on a farm with interconnected pond design to improve the efficiency of the semi-intensive culture of Litopenaeus vannamei ponds. The study was conducted in 21 commercial culture ponds during 180 days at densities of 30–35 ind m−2 and daily water exchange <2%. Our study provides evidence that by interconnecting ponds nutrient recycling is favored by promoting the growth of primary producers of the pond as chlorophyll a. Based on the mass balance and flow of nutrients this culture system reduces the flow of solid, particulate organic matter, and nitrogen compounds to the environment and significantly increases the efficiency of water (5 to 6.5 m3 kg−1 cycle−1), when compared with traditional culture systems. With this culture system it is possible to recover up to 34% of the total nitrogen entering the system, with production in excess of 4,000 kg ha−1 shrimp. We believe that the production system with interconnected ponds is a technically feasible model to improve ecoefficiency production of shrimp farming.

Land cover and land use change related to shrimp farming in coastal areas of Quang Ninh, Vietnam using remotely sensed data

Rapid development of shrimp farming may lead to unrecognized and undesirable changes of land cover/land use patterns in coastal areas. Of special concern is the loss of mangrove forest in coastal areas such as Quang Ninh, Vietnam, which is adjacent to the World Heritage-listed Ha Long Bay. Understanding the status and changes of land cover/land use for coastal shrimp farms and mangrove forests can support environmental protection and decision-making for sustainable development in coastal areas. Within this context, this paper uses the 1999/2001 Landsat ETM+ and the 2008 ALOS AVNIR-2 imagery to investigate the contraction and expansion of shrimp farms and mangrove forests in coastal areas of Ha Long and Mong Cai, which now have a high concentration of intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farms. Images were separately analyzed and classified before using post-classification comparisons to detect land cover/land use changes in the study area. The results of this study found that the area of mangrove forest has been reduced by an estimated 927.5 ha in Ha Long and 1,144.4 ha in Mong Cai, while shrimp farming areas increased by an estimated 1,195.9 and 1,702.5 ha, respectively, over the same period. The majority of shrimp farms in Mong Cai were established at the expense of mangrove forest (49.4 %) while shrimp farms in Ha Long were mainly constructed on areas previously occupied by bare ground (46.5 %) and a significant proportion also replaced mangroves (23.9 %). The remarkable rate of mangrove loss and shrimp farming expansion detected in this study, over a relatively short time scale indicate that greater awareness of environmental impacts of shrimp farm expansion is required if this industry is to be sustainable, the important estuarine and coastal marine ecosystems are to be protected over the long term, and the capturing and storing of carbon in mangrove systems are to be enhanced for global climate change mitigation and for use as carbon offsets.

Impacts of shrimp farming on the coastal environment of Bangladesh and approach for management

The frozen food export sector, next to readymade garments sector, is the second largest export earner of Bangladesh. Shrimp, main item of frozen food, is a major contributor in the national economy of Bangladesh since mid 1980s. Although it provides millions of employment and earns more than US$ 445 million annually, it has been facing a host of challenges. Shrimp farming has been associated with a number of negative environmental and social impacts which hinder the sustainable development of this blooming sector. This paper aim to focus on how the shrimp culture in Bangladesh is affecting the adjacent environment as well as society and management approach for it’s sustain ability by means of reviewing the available scientific literatures. It finds the grave socioeconomic impacts including traditional livelihood displacement, loss of land security, food insecurity, marginalization, rural unemployment, social unrest and conflicts in the wake of shrimp culture development in Bangladesh. Similarly, environmental impacts such as mangrove degradation, loss of biodiversity, sedimentation, saltwater intrusion, and pollution and disease outbreaks are found to be the main obstacles for the development of sustainable shrimp farming. Inappropriate management practices and inadequate plans regarding water quality, seed supply, irrigation facilities and fishery resources are the main reasons for these impacts of shrimp farming. The effective management measures to mitigate the adverse environmental impact of shrimp farming development have now become urgent requirement.

Shifting policies, access, and the tragedy of enclosures in Ecuadorian mangrove fisheries: towards a political ecology of the commons

After decades of mangrove deforestation for the development of shrimp farming, the Ecuadorian state began to officially recognize the ancestral rights of traditional users of coastal mangrove resources in the late 1990s. This article traces the trajectory of coastal policy change and the transformation of mangrove tenure regimes from an implicit preference for shrimp aquaculture to a focus on conservation and sustainable development with greater community participation through the establishment of community-managed mangrove areas called custodias. I argue that while the custodias have empowered local communities in their struggle to defend their livelihoods and environment against the marginalizing forces of global shrimp aquaculture, the implementation of common property arrangements for mangrove fishery management has changed the nature of property rights, the distribution of resources, and social relations among collectors of mangrove cockles (Anadara tuberculosa and A. similis). I suggest a need to develop a political ecology of the commons, an analytical approach applied here to examine the fundamental shift in the nature of the struggle over mangrove resources, from artisanal fishers versus shrimp farmers to a struggle between compañeros: members of associations versus independent cockle collectors. Such a shift in the struggle over resources threatens to undermine the sustainability of the fishery. I conclude that shifting access may be an important underlying factor contributing to a tragedy of enclosures in Ecuador's mangrove cockle fishery.Keywords: political ecology; property rights; common property; access; tragedy of enclosures; shrimp aquaculture; mangroves; artisanal fisheries; Anadara spp., Ecuador

Accumulation by dispossession in coastal Ecuador: Shrimp farming, local resistance and the gender structure of mobilizations

Over the last two decades, the global production of farm-raised shrimps has increased at a faster rate than any other aquacultural product, leading to massive socio-ecological damages in the mangrove areas where shrimp farming often takes place. Consequently, an increasing number of conflicts pitting coastal populations against shrimp farmers has been reported although very few conflicts have been studied in detail. This article contributes to fill this research gap by analyzing the causes, development and consequences of one such conflict in the Ecuadorian canton of Muisne (province of Esmeraldas). This conflict is one of the world's earliest and most important protest movements for the defence of mangroves and against the shrimp industry. Within a political ecology perspective, we connect three key dimensions of the conflict: (1) the socioeconomic metabolism of shrimp farming locally and internationally, (2) the institutions – formal and informal – that regulate the access to mangroves, and (3) the development of the mobilization itself, with special reference to the role of local women. The study is based on six-month fieldwork and combines data from 52 in-depth interviews of a wide range of actors, various documentation, and direct and participant observation. We find that the development of shrimp farming can be understood as a modern case of enclosure movement whereby customary community mangroves are privatized for the building of shrimp ponds. As a result, local mangrove-dependant populations – especially women – mobilized with the support of a grassroots Environmental Justice Organization. The protest was targeted at a form of ecologically unequal exchange where sectors of the global North shift socio-ecological costs onto poor sectors of the producing regions of the global South. In agreement with feminist political ecology, local women were particularly resistant to this process of ‘accumulation by dispossession’. While only some mangroves could be saved or reforested as a result of the movement, women's mobilization has had the unexpected effect of challenging gender relations in their communities. This research articulates dimensions of a given conflict that are too often considered separately, namely social-metabolic issues, institutional change, and gender issues. This allows a more comprehensive view of a complex power struggle.
