Discovering composable web services using functional semantics and service dependencies based on natural language requests

The processes of service discovery, selection and composition are crucial tasks in web service based application development. Most web service-driven applications are complex and are composed of more than one service, so, it becomes important for application designers to identify the best service to perform the next task in the intended application’s workflow. In this paper, a framework for discovering composable service sets as per user’s complex requirements is proposed. The proposed approach uses natural language processing and semantics based techniques to extract the functional semantics of the service dataset and also to understand user context. In case of simple queries, basic services may be enough to satisfy the user request, however, in case of complex queries, several basic services may have to be identified to serve all the requirements, in the correct sequence. For this, the service dependencies of all the services are used for constructing a service interface graph for finding suitable composable services. Experiments showed that the proposed approach was effective towards finding relevant services for simple & complex queries and achieved an average accuracy rate of 75.09 % in finding correct composable service templates.

Semantics-based Web service classification using morphological analysis and ensemble learning techniques

With the emergence of the Programmable Web paradigm, the World Wide Web is evolving into a Web of Services, where data and services can be effectively reused across applications. Given the wide diversity and scale of published Web services, the problem of service discovery is a big challenge for service-based application development. This is further compounded by the limited availability of intelligent categorization and service management frameworks. In this paper, an approach that extends service similarity analysis by using morphological analysis and machine learning techniques for capturing the functional semantics of real-world Web services for facilitating effective categorization is presented. To capture the functional diversity of the services, different feature vector selection techniques are used to represent a service in vector space, with the aim of finding the optimal set of features. Using these feature vector models, services are classified as per their domain, using ensemble machine learning methods. Experiments were performed to validate the classification accuracy with respect to the various service feature vector models designed, and the results emphasize the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Designing service-based applications in the presence of non-functional properties: A mapping study

ContextThe development of distributed software systems has become an important problem for the software engineering community. Service-based applications are a common solution for this kind of systems. Services provide a uniform mechanism for discovering, integrating and using these resources. In the development of service based applications not only the functionality of services and compositions should be considered, but also conditions in which the system operates. These conditions are called non-functional requirements (NFR). The conformance of applications to NFR is crucial to deliver software that meets the expectations of its users. ObjectiveThis paper presents the results of a systematic mapping carried out to analyze how NFR have been addressed in the development of service-based applications in the last years, according to different points of view. MethodOur analysis applies the systematic mapping approach. It focuses on the analysis of publications organized by categories called facets, which are combined to answer specific research questions. The facets compose a classification schema which is part of the contribution and results. ResultsThis paper presents our findings on how NFR have been supported in the development of service-based applications by proposing a classification scheme consisting in five facets: (i) programming paradigm (object/service oriented); (ii) contribution (methodology, system, middleware); (iii) software process phase; (iv) technique or mathematical model used for expressing NFR; and (v) the types of NFR addressed by the papers, based on the classification proposed by the ISO/IEC 9126 specification. The results of our systematic mapping are presented as bubble charts that provide a quantitative analysis to show the frequencies of publications for each facet. The paper also proposes a qualitative analysis based on these plots. This analysis discusses how NFR (quality properties) have been addressed in the design and development of service-based applications, including methodologies, languages and tools devised to support different phases of the software process. ConclusionThis systematic mapping showed that NFR are not fully considered in all software engineering phases for building service based applications. The study also let us conclude that work has been done for providing models and languages for expressing NFR and associated middleware for enforcing them at run time. An important finding is that NFR are not fully considered along all software engineering phases and this opens room for proposing methodologies that fully model NFR. Tangible and Screen-Based Interfaces for End-User Workflow Modeling

Bridging the gap between business needs and IT solutions is a major challenge in service-oriented computing. Recent research has emphasized the importance of including end users in the development of service-based applications. This article contributes to this problem by taking on a human-centered software engineering perspective. Based on an analysis of two different approaches--tangible and screen-based versions of tools--it discusses how end users can participate in the development of technical workflow models based on their perception of business processes. The evaluation results contribute to a better understanding of the needs and problems of end users and give an idea of future challenges for the design of tools that aim to support end user development in the domain of service-oriented computing.

Towards a framework for the development of adaptable service-based applications

Service-oriented computing is a promising computing paradigm which facilitates the composition of loosely coupled and adaptable applications. Unfortunately, this new paradigm does not lend itself easily to traditional software engineering methods and principles due to the decentralised nature of software services. The goal of this paper is to identify a set of engineering activities that can be used to develop adaptable service-based applications. Rather than focusing on the entire service-based application development life-cycle, this paper will focus on adaptation-specific processes and activities and map them to an existing high-level service-based application development life-cycle. Existing software engineering literature as well as research results from service engineering research is reviewed for relevant activities. The result is an adaptation framework that can guide software engineers in developing adaptable service-based applications.

SOA-The Middleware Architecture

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)[2] is an architectural style which allows interaction of diverse applications regardless of their platform, implementation languages and locations by utilizing generic and reliable service that can used as application building block, SOA includes methodologies and strategies to follow in order to develop sophisticated applications and information systems. It is different form the traditional architectures [2] because it has its own unique architectural characteristics and regulations. It needs to be analyzed and clarified so as to apply the information that should be included in the architectural model of SOA correctly to service based application development. SOA is an architectural style which utilizes methods and technologies that provides for enterprises to dynamically connect and communicate software applications between different business partners and platforms by offering generic and reliable services that can be used as application building blocks. This paper aim to describe the architectural framework of SOA and its implementation in industries (i.e. mostly in small scale industries etc.) in enterprise application development.

Establishing a development process for composite applications in the work-based learning and competency management domain

There are management issues surrounding the development process required for the creation of software components that are to be implemented in applications and offered as constituents of a component or service framework. We offer ways of ensuring capability in a development team to provide services that may be assembled into multiple composite applications. We identify the following interrelated factors as necessary to the move to successful service-based application development: model-driven development, process capability and maturity, system requirements traceability, facilitating collaboration between domain experts and the technical implementers and process-based support for the development team. The proposed development process provides a basis for development project management and for support for all the involved roles.
