Competencies of Librarians in the Ecosystem of Open Science

The development of an open science information infrastructure requires the presence of highly qualified library staff. He should be capable of responding to and interested in changes in science and technology, able to create innovative information products and make them available to the public, organize new forms of interaction with scientists, implement educational programs, and advise on associated with the concept of open science. The study is conducted in order to determine the areas of training and practice-oriented training for additional professional programs and retraining of specialized specialists. These programs are the specialists to acquire practical skills in the creation and use of open information resources of various types, the formation of information culture of users, the development of scientific communication and new library and information services. The results of the analysis of the required competencies of library specialists are presented. They take into account the trends in the development of the information ecosystem of open science and building relationships with users through partnerships; the system of different training in Russia is studied and the gap between the education of librarians and the practice of their work on information support of research activities is determined.

Environmental communication for expert audiences - experimenting three approaches

We studied three novel approaches in environmental science communication for experts: gamification, virtual reality, and art-based scenario workshops and analyze participants’ perceptions through qualitative interviews and a survey. Four dimensions emerged from the interviews: enjoyment, usability, sociability, and learning that were found to be important for scientific communication. The approaches were perceived as enjoyable and beneficial for creating dialogue. However, the simplification of the information reduced its usability for experts. The approaches were found suitable for understanding other participants’ viewpoints rather than disseminating knowledge about the content. Experts as a target group require special focus in the development of science communication.

Science Communication in India: Current Trends and Future Vision

India has a rich scientific heritage. Scientific research in astronomy, medicine, mathematics, and material science has been carried out since ancient times. India is advancing technologically, and the need to disseminate scientific information to the non-scientific community is growing rapidly day-by-day. Over the last few years, India has experienced a large-scale proliferation of science communication activities through various programs initiated by the central government, state government, and NGOs. This article attempts to provide an overview of the growth and development of science communication in India. It also identifies India’s current trends and future vision of science communication

Histories of Science Communication

Science communication has been central to our understanding of Modern Europe, and it also plays an important role in other parts of the world. The aim of this article is to present key narratives—histories—about the development of science communication in Modern Europe and beyond. Surveying key contributions, the article identifies two main narratives about science communication in Modern Europe: one about widening gaps between science and the public (informational, epistemological, and moral gaps) and one about building bridges through dialogue, engagement, and participation. Beyond Modern Europe, the same narratives appear but often with important twists. The discussion about science communication in Latin America, for example, includes colonial and postcolonial dimensions, whereas the narrative about science communication (science popularization) in China emphasizes the embeddedness of science communication in national politics. Together, the histories show that science communication is not the diminutive or distorted form of science but rather the sum of social conversations around science.

Institutional Repositories in Russia and Abroad: Review of Publications

In contemporary information space, repository formation is one of the urgent tasks of libraries of scientific and educational institutions. Institutional repositories (IRs) provide unhindered access to scholarly works posted by scientists and specialists for general user, increasing the demand for the library's information resources.The article represents the review of foreign and domestic publications on the formation and development of institutional repositories. The authors consider the advantages of forming Open Access (OA) Repositories both among prospective authors and potential users: archiving and keeping materials in the IR up-to-date, ensuring visibility and possibility of using scientific research through global access, rapid dissemination of research results, increasing the citation of submitted materials, growth of prestige of the organization, the development of scientific communication, etc. The authors found out that placing publications in international archives (arXiv, BioXiv, etc.) or corporate projects (BASE, HathiTrust) has a greater impact on the visibility and potential citation of publications.The article identifies the problems of formation and use of repositories: labour intensity of content placement process, the complexity of data exchange, copyright management, the lack of incentives in providing information about their scientific work, the need for additional time and labour resources when maintaining the IR, the financial costs of maintaining the repository, and the difficulties of search in the IR. The authors note that the IR functionality depends on the software capabilities. The paper gives the examples of new generation repositories and presents their features: self-filling, automatic classification based on text mining and machine learning, data management processes between different systems, easy-to-use interfaces.

Development of science communication in China

In the new century, China sets itself ambitious goals, the implementation of which depends to a large extent on the development of the country's scientific and technical base, in connection with which in recent years, Beijing has significantly increased investments in its own science, against the background of this, the financing of science communication has also increased. Science communication is an important component of the scientific and technological development of society, which is, in a broad sense, processes and mechanisms for the dissemination of advanced ideas and achievements of progress both within the academic community and outside it through various forms, institutions and communication channels. Currently, mainly in the Western world, the theory and practice of science communication is actively developing. In contrast to the traditional understanding of this term, in China the terms kepu and kexue chuanbo (popularisation and dissemination of science) are used, which better correspond to Chinese realities. They mean the transfer of knowledge, not a way of thinking, it is more about the dissemination of science among young people, people in rural and poor regions, than about the exchange of ideas and ways of thinking - a kind of science communication with Chinese characteristics. The article notes that despite a number of obvious difficulties at the implementation stage, partly related to the peculiarities of the Chinese culture and general bureaucratic problems, the popularisation of science is systemic and multi-level, involves a large number of channels and institutions for the transfer of knowledge and scientific information, and has a solid legal basis, which contributes to the solution of the tasks assigned to it and reaching a new level. At the same time, despite the rapid development of Chinese scientific thought, one should not overestimate its influence on world science.

Policy on Strengthening the Role of Libraries in Supporting Scholarly Communication at IAIN Curup

Background of the study: Libraries occupy a very strategic position in supporting scientific communication in universities. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the policy of strengthening the role of libraries in supporting scientific communication at IAIN Curup. Method: This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection was carried out by means of interviews and documentation. Findings: The results of this study indicate that there are several policies that have been and will be carried out by the IAIN Curup and the IAIN Curup Library in supporting scientific communication at IAIN Curup, namely 1) regulations and development strategies in the institutional strategic plan; 2) carry out routine user education activities; 3) online research skills training for academicians; 4) providing e-resources; 5) information literacy class program for students and lecturers; and 6) book review activities. The lecturers hope that the means of scientific communication can be improved so that the role of libraries can be maximized in scientific communication activities. The concept that can be offered in order to strengthen the role and function of libraries in the development of scientific communication at IAIN Curup is the revitalization of user education by adding facilities and facilities for user education activities. Then the increase in the promotion of services and facilities at the IAIN Curup Library. Conclusion: The position of libraries in supporting scientific communication in tertiary institutions must be strengthened through policies in favor of libraries.

Symbiosis Evolution of Science Communication Ecosystem Based on Social Media: A Lotka–Volterra Model-Based Simulation

Social media has become an important way for science communication. Some scholars have examined how to help scientists engage with social media from operational training, policy guidance, and social media services improving. The main contribution of this study is to construct a symbiosis evolution model of science communication ecosystem (SCE) between scientists and social media platforms based on the symbiosis theory and the Lotka–Volterra model to discuss the evolution of their symbiotic patterns and population size under different symbiosis coefficients. The results indicate that (1) the size of the symbiosis coefficients determines the equilibrium outcome of the symbiosis evolution of scientists and social media platforms; (2) scientists and social media platforms can promote each other’s population size under the mutualism pattern, which can achieve sustainable science communication; (3) “1 + 1 > 2” effect can only be achieved under the symmetric mutualism pattern and the growth of scientists and social media platforms is more stable and sufficient than that of other patterns. The findings will provide additional perspectives for promoting the sustainable development of science communication based on social media.

Моніторинг розвитку наукової комунікації в Україні

Annotation. Introduction. In today’s rapidly evolving Internet, new opportunities are emerging for scientific communication among scientists around the world. The dissemination of scientific ideas in society through the media is a daily norm abroad. In Ukraine, the attitude of the research community towards the promotion of scientific research still raises many questions: it is rather wary. For the even development of Ukrainian science, scientists need to cover the results of their work to a wide audience, communicate with press services and journalists and disseminate their ideas in society. With the emergence of new more effective ways and forms of scientific communication through Internet resources and relevant platforms, the creation of new information and scientific technologies, there is a need for state support of scientific activities, communication in Ukraine and ensuring the appropriate level of copyright protection of these scientists, developers etc. Purpose. The main purpose of the study is to monitor the state and trends of scientific communication in Ukraine in modern conditions and to develop recommendations for its further development. Results. The analysis of development of scientific communication in Ukraine is carried out. The definition of the concept of scientific communication is indicated. The process of scientific communication is schematically presented. The most common classification of scientific communication is given. The significance of the created National Research Fund of Ukraine for scientists and science in general is noted. The dynamics of the number of employees involved in the implementation of research and development, who have the degree of Doctor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. The analysis of the employees number by level of education is involved in the implementation of research and development. Conclusions. We are convinced that the improvement of the support mechanism for Ukrainian science, scientists and scientists by the state will help to minimize the possible risks and dangers associated with copyright infringement and the decline of domestic science in general. A Learning Community Involving Collaborative Course-Based Research Experiences for Foundational Chemistry Laboratories

Numerous American national committees have recommended the replacement of traditional labs with a more engaging curriculum that inspires inquiry and enhances scientific skills (examples include the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST)’s Engage to Excel program and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Vision and Change, among others), due to a large body of evidence that shows significant enhancements in student learning and affective outcomes. The implementation of Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) is a creative way to scale up the deployment of authentic research experiences to students. Another highly regarded high-impact practice in postsecondary education is the addition of learning communities. The integration of a three-course learning community and authentic research experiences to laboratory courses adds both a community of scholarship and a development of scientific communication and process skills. This study describes a course that blends these two high-impact practices in higher education in order to promote greater post-course gains in essential elements of a CURE curriculum. This collaborative course shows large post-course gains in essential elements, such as scientific communication and working collaboratively.

Bibliometric Research as a Subject of Copyright in the Activities of Scientific Libraries

It has been stated in the article that the development of scientific communication contributes to extending the role of scientific libraries, in which the professional competence of librarians is related to their knowledge of metadata and experience of working with large collections of documents. One of the tasks of the modern scientific library is to ensure completeness of search, quality of collection, selectivity of processing, reliability of storage, promptness of spreading information. The results of this professional activity can be transformed into intellectual property objects. Library professionals use bibliometric research methods to help them solve their professional tasks, which help in decision-making when purchasing magazines and databases; in library fund analysis; study of publications; researching statistics on the use of electronic documents. It is revealed that in recent decades, bibliometry has become a standard tool for scientific policy and research management in various fields of science. Bibliometry covers such research methods as citation analysis; analysis of reference journals; analysis of quantitative characteristics of primary documents; quantitative analysis of publications of individual authors and their citation; quantitative analysis of scientific publications of particular countries of the world, states, and certain teams of scientists; theoretical issues, including the study of patterns of growth, aging and rank distribution of scientific documents; content analysis of scientific documents; other issues related to spreading scientific documents. Such research requires library staff of creative ability and professional competence. Today’s means of social communication define the new tasks for libraries, the activities of which are related to intellectualization of the library sphere. The results of bibliometric research may be subject to copyright, provided that they meet the criteria of safety, have signs of creativity and novelty.

РОЗВИТОК НАУКОВОЇ КОМУНІКАЦІЇ СТУДЕНТСЬКОЇ МОЛОДІ ЗАСОБАМИ ТУРНІРНИХ ЗМАГАНЬ

This research work is dedicated to a topical theme from the science’s point of view. The main goals are to study the role of competitions in history tournaments for students in the development of scientific communication in the process of studying at university. The experimental part of the study included 130 respondents: 100 students as participants of tournament competitions and 30 jury members who evaluated the tournament games and participated in the study of this innovative phenomenon. To determine the effectiveness of tournament competitions and their role in the development of scientific communication, an observation method was used to identify the feelings and behaviour of tournament participants at different stages of the game. The comparative method was used to identify the peculiarities of tournament competitions in the system of competitions, contests held in Ukraine. The survey method was used to identify the level of achievement of participants during the tournament and the impact of tournament competitions on further study and research activities of students. The results of the study proved to be an important factor in the development of scientific communication among students. This fact caused the ability of student’s youth to work in a team and to carry out scientific research and protect own ideas. As a result of the study, it was discovered that students who studied the science themes prior to the tournament and participated in tournament competitions (public defence and opposition) had significantly higher levels of academic achievement than their classmates. A good deal of students noted that during the tournament competitions they communicated with jury members (scholars from all over Ukraine) and got much historical information according to important achievements in historical science, new ideas and concepts, little-known historians so far. According to the results of the study, it was recommended to create a scientific discussion colloquium among students who are interested in investigating science of domestic and foreign scholars.

SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION AND THE DIGITAL KNOWLEDGE SPACE: STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM FOR RUSSIA

Trends in the development of scientific communication and questions are formulated, the answers to which should determine the image of the future of scientific communication in Russia. An overview of government decisions and projects in recent years related to the development of scientific information is offered. Among them are the President’s instructions, the draft law «On science and scientific policy», the creation of the National electronic library and the Single Russian electronic knowledge space and the National encyclopedia portal. The concepts of digital science development developed in the Ministry of education and science are analyzed in detail. It is claimed that their provisions do not correspond to the real state of Affairs in Russian scientific information systems. Proposing an action plan aimed at creating a Single digital space of scientific knowledge as the successor to GSNTI or the national system of scientific information as a separate fragment, Single Russian electronic knowledge spaces. The principles that can be used as the basis for a Single digital space of scientific knowledge are formulated.

Comunicación de las Ciencias en Argentina: escenarios y prácticas de un campo en mutación

The article is aimed at reconstructing the most recent stages in the development of Science Communication in Argentina. The general approach is inspired by the “cultural cartography” method proposed by Gyerin to explore the dyamics that shapes and re-shapes the border’s of different fields of knowledges and practices, at the pace of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, of epistemical and non-epistemical considerations. The underlying premise is that any reflection on the issue cannot leave aside the particular conditions that affects that development; rather just the opposite, it must be deeply contextually-anchored. On this basis, the purpose is to describe and interpret the booms-and-busts of the local Science Communication in the contexts of its relations with different areas and their respective agents: scientific institutions, public policies for research and development, the mass-media and the cultural industry, among others. After a brief reference to certain relevant advances accomplished during the twentieth century, the main emphasis is put in the current consolidation phase, started at the turn of the 2000s, specially in the profound changes that have taken place since then.

SCIENTISTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE NATURE OF NANOSCIENCE AND ITS PUBLIC COMMUNICATION

Some level of understanding of and about nanoscience and nanotechnology (NST) has been suggested as being relevant in up-to-date scientific literacy for all. Research scientists working in these fields are central in current efforts to inform and engage the public in NST. Earlier research has shown that scientists can contribute to authentic science learning, but communication always entails roles that affect the choice of content. This study investigated NST researchers’ views on the nature of their research and their preferences in NST communication. Eight experienced professors working in various fields of NST were interviewed. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews focused on the scientists’ views on 1) the nature of their research, and 2) aspects of NST that should be communicated to the public. Qualitative content analysis of the interviews revealed that the themes the interviewees highlighted when describing their research (interdisciplinarity, size scale, methods, objects, nature of NST in general) were somewhat different from the ones they considered as important for communication to the public (applications and products, risks and benefits, visualizations). The results problematize the simplistic notion that exposure to real scientists would unquestionably enhance the authenticity of science learning. This study gives insight for research and development of science communication, especially scientists’ role and training in it. Comunicação científica em saúde no Brasil: revisão de literatura

This work is about the emergent of scientific communication about health in Brazil and shows which were the scientific journals published in this country in 19th century. The methodology utilized was the exploratory literature review that implicated in a systematic search for scientific articles registered in SciELO, and 49 works were founded in the period of 1998 to 2012. From the analyzed abstracts, the articles that have historic aspects and bring information about the emergent and the development of scientific communication in Brazil in 19th century were selected. The results confirm that the scientific journals are the communication vehicle to health’s field that most contribute to science advancement. It distinguishes the importance of the “Gazeta Médica da Bahia” as a periodic that had participated of the beginning of the scientific communication in the country and continues with regular publication until 2012.

Oral and Written Academic Discourse: Models of Investigation

The growth in inter-cultural relations among global academic circles and the globalization of scientific thought it entails, have led to a conflict between various cultures and languages, which is more evident at the language level. English has become a universal language of communication and serves as a tool to disseminate the results of scientific research conducted in various countries, to exchange ideas, to accept or decline hypotheses. One could suppose that English used in a given branch of science includes cultural and linguistic characteristics of scholars of various nationalities which need to be specified and investigated thereby contributing to the further development of scientific communication in the field. The present article offers two models of written and oral academic discourse.

Science Fans: A Basic Description and Analysis of the Emergence of a Pseudoscience Movement in China

Science fans (minjian kexue aihaozhe) are a special group devoted to so-called scientific activities outside of the science community. They are different from amateur scientists (or science amateur) (yeyu kexue aihaozhe) in the way that they do not have proper channels for communication with the scientific community. The populations of Science fans' numbers increased sharply in the early 1980's in China because of the social environment, the public perception of science at that time, the misunderstanding of scientific activities by mass media, and the paranoid tendencies of science fans themselves. Research upon science fans can address the problem they have caused and provide some advice on the development of science communication in China.
