Innovation on Literacy Habit Program for Madrasah Ibtidaiyah in Surabaya

The improvement of reading competence in Indonesia has not yet reached its maximum point. Indonesia’s achievements in a number of surveys also show poor results. Nevertheless, several cities in East Java have started to initiate the development of the literacy through various programs as an act of reflection on the findings of the previous surveys. In Surabaya, some programs have been initiated by goverment to cultivate literacy such as reading corner book review, book discussion, reading community, and others. These programs are aimed to increase reading interest (reading habit) of children in Surabaya. By using the Community Based Research (CBR) method, this research observed innovation as new programs about reading habit in the 27 Madrasah Ibtidaiyah in Surabaya. The author found that there are five stages of innovation (knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation) were conducted by Madrasah Ibtidaiyah in Surabaya. The result indicates that all the stages have been done well by the library manager in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah in Surabaya. This can be seen from several aspects such as of the knowledge of the importance of literacy for their students, awareness to change for better future, and a decision to implement some new programs in the development of reading habit

Fortaleciendo el hábito lector en profesionistas y universitarios mediante la Lectura dialógica

Se presentan los resultados de una intervención para fomentar la lectura de literatura a través de la lectura dialógica. Se utilizaron las Tertulias Literarias Dialógicas como estrategia principal y se empleó la metodología de investigación-acción. Se atendió a un grupo de 17 personas con diversas formaciones universitarias durante 20 sesiones presenciales. El objetivo principal fue promover el hábito de la lectura, desarrollando las habilidades críticas y dialógicas, incentivando a los participantes a buscar materiales de lectura por su propia cuenta y a compartir sus experiencias de lectura con amigos y familiares. Particularmente, se pretendió fomentar la lectura por placer de literatura, la difusión de las diferentes librerías y bibliotecas de la ciudad, incentivar la sociabilización de la lectura, y favorecer el crecimiento del hábito lector y dialógico. Se utilizaron materiales de lectura en textos impresos y digitales, así como películas, canciones e imágenes. Se constató que la estrategia empleada fue favorable para el fomento de la lectura de literatura por placer, el fortalecimiento del hábito lector y el crecimiento de las habilidades para la lectura crítica y dialógica.

Elektronske knjige u učenju stranih jezika iz perspektive studenata - pregled istraživanja

This paper looks at the use of e-books in higher education, with special reference to the perceptions of foreign language students, as over the last decade there has been a noticeable tendency in this population towards increased use of e-books for their studies. Due to their technical characteristics, primarily multimediality and interactivity, e-books have great potential for foreign language learning at all levels. Therefore, in the relevant literature there is an increasing number of studies dealing with various aspects of e-book use in foreign language acquisition. The aim of this paper is to present a review of published studies pertaining to student perceptions of the potential, advantages and drawbacks of e-books in content learning in the field of foreign languages. The structure of the paper comprises an introductory section, a section on the emergence of e-books, a review of research in higher education, and a review of studies in which data on foreign language students' perceptions of the use of e-books in their studies were obtained using empirical methods. In the conclusion, it is noted that students use e-books, that they are acquainted with their advantages and drawbacks, but that they nevertheless prefer the use of printed books for studying. Students' attitudes suggest that e-books, due to their technical characteristics, can have high applicability in foreign language learning in terms of vocabulary expansion, better comprehension, the development of reading habits and text analysis.

The development of reading habits in the society is influenced by both the family and school environment. Teachers are the most effective element within the school environment. Social studies teachers at the primary education level and history teachers at the secondary education level can be said to be branch teachers who should have an "advanced" reading habits both in terms of their fields and their missions. As a result, this study was carried out in order to determine their attitudes towards reading and their reading habits. This study was conducted with 110 participants from 4 provinces. 50 were social studies teachers while 60 were history teachers in Central Anatolia and Marmara regions in 2014 to 2015 school year. In the study, a mixed method was used involving both quantitative and qualitative dimensions. As a result of the research, it was determined that the teachers of social studies and history had a reading habit at an "intermediate" level. Based on findings; regarding the willingness to read books between social studies teachers and history teachers, a meaningful difference was found in favor of social studies teachers in the sub-dimensions of adopting the influence and benefit of reading the book; and a significant difference was found in favor of female teachers in the subscales of adopting the effect and benefit of reading the willing to read books between female teachers and male teachers. In addition, teachers expressed that they read in order to learn more because of factors such as timelessness, but that the environment does not encourage them. Activities suggested by the teachers to improve reading did not really contribute to improve reading habits. Reading Habits, Language Learning Achievements and Principles for Deep Knowledge

This paper intends to understand how the nine principles for deep knowledge (PDK) affect reading habits and language achievements by conducting a small-scale, experimental and statistical study. All 32 students participating in this study exhibit significant traits of PDK. The results suggest that inner-connection principle significantly correlates with academic performances. Deep-and-down and alternating principles significantly correlate with reading habits. Meanwhile, inner-connection principle effectively predicts academic performances and deep-and-low principle effectively forecasts reading habits. The mediating effect of PDK on language achievement is not statistically significant, possibly due to sample size, but nonetheless relevant and valuable to the prediction of reading habits. The development of reading habits for English-language materials takes a long time and good reading habits absolutely have profound impacts on the effectiveness of language learning. The integration of PDK characteristics into the establishment of reading habits can help build good habits in a more effective manner.

NARASI DALAM CERITA BERGAMBAR UNTUK PAUD/TK (Kajian terhadap Muatan Nilai Personal dan Edukatif)

The aim of this research is to describe the personal and educational values in the graphic stories of the learning materials for pre-school education/kindergarten. The research applies Huck et al’s theory (1987) which states that children stories are full of personal and educational values. The population of the research is graphic stories found in different sources for the materials of the pre-school education/kindergarten. The sampling method is purposive sampling, i.e. the sampling which is based on the research objective. The examination is conducted using extrinsic approach in order to emphasize the analysis on the values and functions of the stories. The analysis is carried out by establishing categories, describing, and drawing inferences. The result of the research shows that there are eleven values in the graphic stories of the materials of the preschool educations/kindergartens, i.e. the development of emotional, intellectual, imaginative (and fantasy), social, ethical and religious values; exploration and discovery; language acquisition; cultivation of sense of beauty, introduction to multicultural insights, development of reading habits, and building up good personality.

Pleasure Reading Among First-Year University Students

Objectives – This study examines the reading habits and experiences of first-year undergraduate students at Dalhousie University and the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. 
 
 Methods – First-year undergraduate university students (aged 18 to 20) were recruited to take part in focus group discussions and responses were analysed to examine the following topics: (1) the role of reading in their lives, both academic and personal; (2) the development of reading habits from childhood; (3) reading engagement strategies; and (4) selection strategies. 
 
 Results – This study suggests that reading for pleasure is a well-established habit amongst many first-year undergraduate students. First-year undergraduates primarily read for pleasure in order to relax but also recognize that pleasure reading can play a positive role in their academic performance, enhancing their range of background knowledge as well as their active vocabulary.
 
 Conclusions – The conclusions of this research provide recommendations for librarians and university administration to engage students and increase rates of retention in postsecondary institutions. In particular, recommendations related to the importance of pleasure reading collections, campus reading programs, book clubs, readers’ advisory services and quiet and comfortable reading areas in academic libraries are provided.

Research into Education: A Headmaster's View

What do we in the schools want from the researchers? A headmaster states his belief in the individual school as the vital organism, as the unit of education, and in the need for greater flexibility in the staffing of our schools so that practising teachers may be free to take part in educational research. The researchers are asked whether they can find solutions to a number of problems: How do the State systems solve the problem of too great mobility of staff while maintaining equality of opportunity? What is the optimum size of a school and what is the optimum age range for a secondary school? Is there value in the boy's identifying himself with his school? What is a good school, and what is a well‐disciplined school? The researchers are asked for more standardized achievement tests; for more work on the development of reading habits and skills in schools; for further curriculum research; for help in measuring ‘readiness’; for insights into motivation and classroom interaction.
