An empirical study into the effects of transpilation on quantum circuit smells

Quantum computing is a promising field that can solve complex problems beyond traditional computers’ capabilities. Developing high-quality quantum software applications, called quantum software engineering, has recently gained attention. However, quantum software development faces challenges related to code quality. A recent study found that many open-source quantum programs are affected by quantum-specific code smells, with long circuit being the most common. While the study provided relevant insights into the prevalence of code smells in quantum circuits, it did not explore the potential effect of transpilation, a necessary step for executing quantum computer programs, on the emergence of code smells. Indeed, transpilation might alter those characteristics employed to detect the presence of a smell on a circuit. To address this limitation, we present a new study investigating the impact of transpilation on quantum-specific code smells and how different target gate sets affect the results. We conducted experiments on 17 open-source quantum programs alongside a set of 100 synthetic circuits. We found that transpilation can significantly alter the metrics that are used to detect code smells, even into previously smell-free circuits, with the long circuit smell being the most susceptible to transpilation. Furthermore, the choice of the gate set significantly influences the presence and severity of code smells in transpiled circuits, highlighting the need for careful gate set selection to mitigate their impact. These findings have implications for circuit optimization and high-quality quantum software development. Further research is needed to understand the consequences of code smells and their potential impact on quantum computations, considering the characteristics and constraints of different gate sets and hardware platforms.

Optimizing Software Development: A Comparative Study of Python and R for Enhanced Efficiency and Quality

This paper attempts to delve into these languages and understand their weaknesses and strengths in order to provide professionals to make abreast decisions. The results of this comparative analysis are intended to give decisionmakers, data scientists and computer scientists a useful understanding of the pros and cons of R and Python in different scenarios related to software efficiency and development.

Development of model-based simulation and optimization software for electron beam melting and refining

In this paper the development of a software for electron beam melting and refining (EBMR) of different materials is presented. It has the following functional characteristics: simulation of the temperature distributions in the cast ingots, investigation and optimization of the form of the liquid pool during the process of EBMR and estimation of the inclusion refining rates, depending on the EBMR process parameters. The temperature distributions in the cast ingots are simulated by the implementation of quasi steady-state two-dimensional heat model and three-dimensional time-dependent thermal model for different refined metals. Empirical models are estimated, integrated in the developed software and used for the investigation of the molten pool geometry parameters, the content of impurities after the electron beam refining process, refining rate, overall inclusion removal efficiency and the material losses. The influence of EBMR process parameters such as electron beam power, casting velocity, refining time, and electron beam radius are considered. Multicriterial optimization software functions can be implemented for solving concrete technological requirements for each practical use-case.

Custom software development of structural dimension optimization software for the buckling of stiffened plates

<abstract> <p>Existing structural optimization software tools only integrate the Euler buckling function of rods and plates and do not consider the buckling strength constraint of stiffened plates, thus failing to meet the optimization design requirements of thin-walled structures such as ship hulls. In this study, according to the buckling strength specifications for stiffened plates of ships, the custom software development of a structural optimization program with "buckling constraints of stiffened plates" was performed using the HyperMesh optimization design software. The finite-element grid of the stiffened plate was divided; the average stress, stress gradient and other parameters associated with the buckling of stiffened plates were determined; the DRESP3 card was set; the external OML function file was linked and the buckling strength of the stiffened plates was introduced into the dimensional optimization design model as a constraint. The proposed method was used to optimize the structure scantlings of a platform, achieving a reduction of 8.96% compared with the original scheme, while also meeting the requirements of structural strength, deformation and buckling strength. The results demonstrated that the dimensional optimization software with buckling constraints is operable and can aid in the rapid structural optimization design of stiffened plates.</p> </abstract>

Application of Computer Energy Optimization Method in Oil and Gas Gathering and Transportation System

With the continuous development of society and economy, human demand for petrochemical-related products and derivatives is becoming more and more vigorous. However, the increase in oilfield development time and the expansion of scale easily make it difficult to control energy consumption. In response to this bottleneck problem, this paper relies on computer technology to explore the development of energy optimization software for oil and gas gathering and transportation systems, which provides convenience for grassroots technical managers by realizing control of the operating parameters of the oil gathering system, realizing process management and fine management., Changed the traditional oilfield management model. At the same time, taking the water-mixing oil collection process as an example, explore the application process and effect of the software in the oil field.

CBM drilling technical parameter optimization methodology and software development: a case study of LUAN mining area.

Based on the leakage of the coalbed methane (CBM) drilling engineering practice of Luan mining area in China, the author determines the safe drilling fluid density range for the stable borehole wall based on borehole wall collapse and fracture pressure. Such parameters as the drilling fluid hydraulic parameters (including pump pressure, pump power and displacement, nozzle diameter, bit pressure drop, bit hydraulic horsepower, circulation pressure drop, impact force and jet velocity) and drilling parameters (including weight-on-bit, drilling rotary speed, bit tooth wear) in each borehole section are optimized. Taking the lowest drilling cost as the controlling target, the drilling parameter optimization model is designed and solved by the genetic algorithm. Furthermore, a software named "CBM borehole wall stability parameter design and optimization" characterized by visualization and applicable for drilling formation condition, which can be used to design and optimize the borehole drilling technological parameters, is developed. This program includes such modules as drilling fluid density prediction, drilling technology design, database management, user management and help. The developed software is proven to solve the drilling leakage effectively in the No.67 borehole practice, which can help drilling engineers to optimize CBM drilling technological parameters safely and quickly.

ОСОБЛИВОСТІ КУРСУ «УПРАВЛІННЯ ІТ-ПРОЕКТАМИ» В ЗАКЛАДАХ ВИЩОЇ ОСВІТИ

У сучасних умовах розвитку інформаційної економіки пріоритетним напрямком є розвиток у сфері інформаційних технологій. Розробка програмного забезпечення та програмно-технічних комплексів є досить складним проектом, управляння яким потребує спеціалізованих менеджерів проекту. У зв’язку з цим у середовищі професійних кадрів відчувається гостра нестача навичок з формалізації, підготовки та управління проектами. Отже, виникає нагальна потреба в опануванні світового досвіду розробки, аналізу, впровадження та управління проектами, особливо в сфері розробки інформаційних систем та програмного забезпечення.
 В статті розглянуто особливості навчальної дисципліни «Управління ІТ-проектами» в закладах вищої освіти І-ІІ рівня акредитації. Головну мету навчання дисципліни «Управління проектами» визначено як формування у студентів уявлення про методологію підготовки й реалізації, способи та засоби побудови проектів, залучення ресурсів для реалізації цих проектів і механізмів управління ними. Завдання дисципліни – дати студентам систему теоретичних знань і сформувати практичні навички у сфері планування, оцінки, моніторингу та супроводження проектів в ІТ-сфері.
 Розкрито зміст навчальної дисципліни «Управління ІТ-проектами, яка розроблена для підготовки студентів за спеціальністю «Комп’ютерні науки» всіх форм навчання. Студенти здобувають комплекс знань та навичок, що дозволить розуміти процес управління проектами, практично використовувати засоби планування та реалізацію ІТ-проектів, розробляти вірну структуру плану виконання проектів, оволодіти практичними навиками користування інформаційними системами, в яких відбувається розробка та реалізація етапів реалізації проекту, призначення відповідальних за етапи виконання, писати технічні завдання з використанням регуляторних документів та відповідних ГОСТів.
 Розглянуто деякі методичні аспекти навчання управління проектами як необхідну ланку професійної підготовки фахівців у галузі інформаційних технологій. Наведено короткий огляд найпоширеніших систем управління проектами: MS Project, Open Рlan Рrofessional та Project Expert. Навчання курсу повинне сприяти засвоєнню студентами базових знань, щодо принципів теорії управління проектами з розробки програмного забезпечення і набуття лабораторних навичок планування, контролю та оптимізації процесів розробки програмного забезпечення.
 
 

Optimization of software development life cycle quality for NPP safety software based on a risk-cost model

As I&C systems in NPPs are being replaced with digital-based systems, the need for cost-effective safety-critical software engineering plans has been received increased attention. This paper proposes a framework for optimizing software development and V&V qualities by incorporating and estimating various risk-cost factors related to SDLC processes. The model determines the optimal software development or V&V quality that gives the minimum value of an objective function which includes three risk-cost factors: 1) software quality control cost; 2) software defect fixing cost; and 3) the cost from NPP accident consequence considering software failure probability. We present a case study using OPR-1000 plant model. The study results showed important SDLC phases where the risk-cost factors can be minimized by achieving high software quality. The proposed method is expected to be useful to software developers and decision makers for assisting NPP software project and quantifying risk from software life cycle on NPP safety.

Development of Analysis and Optimization Software for Dual Horse Head Pumping Unit with Single Arc Back Horse Head Based on GUI Editor

In this paper, the kinematic analysis and optimization model for the dual horse head pumping unit with single arc back horse head which has the characteristic of variable rod length are established. Using GUI editor, a motion analysis and optimization software for the dual horse head pumping unit based on MATLB platform is developed. Realizing the kinematic analysis of dual horse head pumping unit with single arc back horse head and the optimization of installation position of rear horse head effectively reduces the torque peak, and the software has good user interface. This paper proves the validity and reliability of the software system by the simulation analysis of the CYJS6-3-18HB pumping unit.

Development and Application of Collaborative Optimization Software for Plate - fin Heat Exchanger

This paper introduces the design ideas of the calculation software and application examples for plate - fin heat exchangers. Because of the large calculation quantity in the process of designing and optimizing heat exchangers, we used Visual Basic 6.0 as a software development carrier to design a basic calculation software to reduce the calculation quantity. Its design condition is plate - fin heat exchanger which was designed according to the boiler tail flue gas. The basis of the software is the traditional design method of the plate-fin heat exchanger. Using the software for design and calculation of plate-fin heat exchangers, discovery will effectively reduce the amount of computation, and similar to traditional methods, have a high value.

On Understanding Preference for Agile Methods among Software Developers

Agile methods are gaining widespread use in industry. Although management is keen on adopting agile, not all developers exhibit preference for agile methods. The literature is sparse in regard to why developers may show preference for agile. Understanding the factors informing the preference for agile can lead to more effective formation of teams, better training approaches, and optimizing software development efforts by focusing on key desirable components of agile. This study, using a grounded theory methodology, finds a variety of categories of factors that influence software developer preference for agile methods including self-efficacy, affective response, interpersonal response, external contingencies, and personality contingencies. Each of these categories contains multiple dimensions. Preference rationalization for agile methods is the core category that emerges from the data. It informs that while the very essence of agile methods overwhelmingly and positively resonates with software developers, the preference is contingent on external and personality factors as well.

Flexible parametric modelling of the hazard function in breast cancer studies

In cancer research, study of the hazard function provides useful insights into disease dynamics, as it describes the way in which the (conditional) probability of death changes with time. The widely utilized Cox proportional hazard model uses a stepwise nonparametric estimator for the baseline hazard function, and therefore has a limited utility. The use of parametric models and/or other approaches that enables direct estimation of the hazard function is often invoked. A recent work by Cox et al. [6] has stimulated the use of the flexible parametric model based on the Generalized Gamma (GG) distribution, supported by the development of optimization software. The GG distribution allows estimation of different hazard shapes in a single framework. We use the GG model to investigate the shape of the hazard function in early breast cancer patients. The flexible approach based on a piecewise exponential model and the nonparametric additive hazards model are also considered.

A software process engineering approach to improving software team productivity using socioeconomic mechanism design

Software development is a knowledge and human intensive activity. At the social level, the interactions of these participants and their ability to cooperate are important for improving the productivity of teams and organizations. It is therefore not surprising to discover that recent contributions in software development have repeatedly asserted the critical role of people in software development efforts. However, existing approaches to software development fail to fully exploit the importance of social and intellectual capital that has been highlighted in the fields of economics and sociology. We propose that leveraging the existing approaches from economics and sociology and applying to software development can assist software organizations in maximizing their return on investment. For example, by applying one such approach, mechanism design, we can improve and model the organization's total productivity based on social aspects affecting productivity (i.e. social productivity). This paper will discuss the vision and progress for applying the concept of mechanism design for optimizing software development teams.

COMPARISON OF TWO HEURISTIC APPROACHES FOR SOLVING THE PRODUCTION SCHEDULING PROBLEM

Production scheduling problems attract a lot of attention among applied scientists and practitioners working in the field of combinatorial optimization and optimization software development since they are encountered in many different manufacturing processes and thus effective solutions to them offer great benefits. In this work, two commonly used heuristic methods for solving production scheduling problems, namely, the Nearest Neighbor (NN) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) have been tested on a specific real-life problem and the results discussed. The problem belongs to the class of Asymmetric Travelling Salesman Problems (ATSP), which is known as a hard type problem with no effective solutions for large scale problems available yet. The performances of the Nearest Neighbor algorithm and the Ant Colony Optimization technique were evaluated and compared using two criteria, namely: the minimum value of the objective function achieved and the CPU time it took to find it (including the statistical confidence limits). The conclusions drawn suggest that on one hand the ACO algorithm works better than NN if looking at the achieved minimum values of the objective function. On the other hand, the computational time of the ACO algorithm is slightly longer.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.itc.40.2.426

An approach to optimizing software development team size

This paper explores the relationship between software size, development effort and team size. We propose an approach aimed at finding the team size where the project effort has its minimum. The approach was applied to the ISBSG repository containing nearly 4000 software projects. Based on the results we provide our recommendation for the optimal or near-optimal team size in seven project groups defined by four project properties.

OPT++

Object-oriented programming is a relatively new tool in the development of optimization software. The code extensibility and the rapid algorithm prototyping capability enabled by this programming paradigm promise to enhance the reliability, utility, and ease of use of optimization software. While the use of object-oriented programming is growing, there are still few examples of general purpose codes written in this manner, and a common approach is far from obvious. This paper describes OPT++, a C++ class library for nonlinear optimization. The design is predicated on the concept of distinguishing between an algorithm-independent class hierarchy for nonlinear optimization problems and a class hierarchy for nonlinear optimization methods that is based on common algorithmic traits. The interface is designed for ease of use while being general enough so that new optimization algorithms can be added easily to the existing framework. A number of nonlinear optimization algorithms have been implemented in OPT++ and are accessible through this interface. Furthermore, example applications demonstrate the simplicity of the interface as well as the advantages of a common interface in comparing multiple algorithms.

Recipe optimization and design software development of tape carrier package (TCP) inner lead bonding (ILB)

This paper proposes an optimization methodology for quickly determining a bonding recipe for the inner lead bonding (ILB) of a tape carrier package (TCP). The recipe consists of the bonding force, stage temperature, bonding time, and geometrical forming. The bonding force derivation was based on the essential relationship between the bonding force and sinking value from the referred literature. The remaining three parameter equations were derived using empirical accumulation. The experimental data were collected by conducting eight TCP product trial runs to validate the methodology. In addition, the user-interface software was programmed to be user friendly. The development cycle time can be condensed from the average number of hours to less than one hour, revealing a time saving improvement during practical applications. Good yield rates were obtained as well.

Object-oriented software for quadratic programming

The object-oriented software package OOQP for solving convex quadratic programming problems (QP) is described. The primal-dual interior point algorithms supplied by OOQP are implemented in a way that is largely independent of the problem structure. Users may exploit problem structure by supplying linear algebra, problem data, and variable classes that are customized to their particular applications. The OOQP distribution contains default implementations that solve several important QP problem types, including general sparse and dense QPs, bound-constrained QPs, and QPs arising from support vector machines and Huber regression. The implementations supplied with the OOQP distribution are based on such well known linear algebra packages as MA27/57, LAPACK, and PETSc. OOQP demonstrates the usefulness of object-oriented design in optimization software development, and establishes standards that can be followed in the design of software packages for other classes of optimization problems. A number of the classes in OOQP may also be reusable directly in other codes.
