Bioactivity Potential of Marine Natural Products from Scleractinia-Associated Microbes and In Silico Anti-SARS-COV-2 Evaluation.

Marine organisms and their associated microbes are rich in diverse chemical leads. With the development of marine biotechnology, a considerable number of research activities are focused on marine bacteria and fungi-derived bioactive compounds. Marine bacteria and fungi are ranked on the top of the hierarchy of all organisms, as they are responsible for producing a wide range of bioactive secondary metabolites with possible pharmaceutical applications. Thus, they have the potential to provide future drugs against challenging diseases, such as cancer, a range of viral diseases, malaria, and inflammation. This review aims at describing the literature on secondary metabolites that have been obtained from Scleractinian-associated organisms including bacteria, fungi, and zooxanthellae, with full coverage of the period from 1982 to 2020, as well as illustrating their biological activities and structure activity relationship (SAR). Moreover, all these compounds were filtered based on ADME analysis to determine their physicochemical properties, and 15 compounds were selected. The selected compounds were virtually investigated for potential inhibition for SARS-CoV-2 targets using molecular docking studies. Promising potential results against SARS-CoV-2 RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and methyltransferase (nsp16) are presented.

Marine Biotechnology in Québec: Science and Innovation Highlights

The development of marine biotechnology in Québec relies on a network of several processing plants of marine seafoods and fishes, a fleet of a thousand coastal and mid shore boats, and many aquaculture companies. Québec's marine biotechnology industry is still very young, in existence just under 20 years. It is distinguished by a dozen small and medium-sized businesses and diverse companies and organizations. Already in the province, the interest of multinational companies in the sector and in the innovative products generated by the smallest biotech is increasing. This paper is an overview of science and innovation activities focusing on the industrial realizations in Québec and introducing some examples of marine by-product valorization, and exploitation of seaweed and microorganisms.

Development of marine biotechnology as a resource for novel proteases and their role in modern biotechnology

Marine environment consists of the largest sources diversified genetic pool of material with an enormous potential for a wide variety of enzymes including proteases. A protease hydrolyzes the peptide bond and most of proteases possess many industrial applications. Marine proteases differ considerably from those found in internal or external organs of invertebrates and vertebrates. In common with all enzymes, external factors such as temperature, pH and type of media are important for the activity, catalytic efficiency, stability and proper functioning of proteases. In this review valuable characteristics of proteases in marine organisms and their applications are gathered from a wide literature survey. Considering their biochemical significance and their increasing importance in biotechnology, a thorough understanding of marine proteases functioning could be of prime importance.

The development of marine biotechnology in Oman: Potential for capacity building through open innovation

This study examines the current state of the art in the emerging and strategically important marine biotechnology sector in Oman, which has a long coastline, rich marine heritage and strong fishing industry. In a knowledge-based economy, the ability to innovate is a key factor for increasing organisational competitiveness and this may be achieved using open innovation. This is the use by firms of external knowledge, ideas and technology to innovate. In this study, the extent of open innovation in Omani marine bioindustry companies has been studied by examining data from the top sixteen companies ranked by number of employees. The results indicate that the extent of openness in these companies is higher towards market side activities. In addition, the use of open innovation to increase collaboration between companies, Universities and government research institutes needs to be significantly strengthened.

Marine Microorganisms as a Source of New Natural Products

Over the past decade, marine microorganisms have become recognized as an important and untapped resource for novel bioactive compounds. The oceans cover greater than 70% of the earth's surface and, taking this into account by volume, represent better than 95% of the biosphere. Given this fact, the oceans present themselves as an unexplored area of opportunity for the discovery of pharmacologically active compounds. In this review, data have been presented to illustrate the diversity of microorganisms living in the sea and the plethora of chemical compounds that have been discovered from them. However, it is important to pursue basic research on the marine environment in order to permit the continued isolation of unique microorganisms. There is still limited knowledge of the physiological requirements of most marine microorganisms, and a greater understanding of their conditions for growth will offer new insights into the complex world of marine microbiology. Clearly, a greater investment in the development of marine biotechnology will produce novel compounds that may contribute significantly toward drug development over the next decade.
