On the corporate governance effect of social security funds

We investigate the corporate governance effect of social security fund, and explore the ways through which social security affects firm performance This paper finds that: the shareholding ratio of social security funds is positively related to the performance level of companies; the shareholding ratio of social security funds is significantly and positively related to the management compensation of listed companies; and the shareholding ratio of social security funds positively affects the quality of information disclosure of invested listed companies. Our findings provides timely practical implication to regulators concerned with the development of institutional investors.

The impact of investor structure on stock price crash sensitivity: Evidence from China's stock market

Stock price crash sensitivity refers to the conditional probability of a stock crash when the market collapses. It focuses on individual stocks' sensitivity to the market crash and can affect stock pricing significantly. Although the crash sensitivity of China's stock market is very high as a whole (Weigert, 2016), different individual stocks show varying degrees of crash sensitivity. This paper, adopting the perspective of institutional investors, explores the reasons for the difference in crash sensitivity in China's stock market, and finds that: First, institutional investors' shareholdings is positively related to firms' stock price crash sensitivity. However, after dividing institutional investors into professional (represented by financial institutions) and non-professional institutional investors (represented by general legal persons), we find that only professional institutional investors' shareholdings is negatively related to firms' stock price crash sensitivity. Second, the impact of professional institutional investors on the crash sensitivity is influenced by stock liquidity and media sentiment: when the stock liquidity of listed companies is good or the media sentiment is strong, the negative impact of professional institutional investors on the crash sensitivity is accordingly high. This paper, by highlighting the investor structure, attempts a pioneering exploration of the influencing factors of the difference in stock price crash sensitivity in China. Our empirical results enrich research on stock price crash sensitivity and the heterogeneity of institutional investors. They can also serve to guide regulatory authorities' development of institutional investors and efforts to maintain market stability.

Indian Financial Sector: Structure, Trends and Turns

This paper traces the story of Indian financial sector over the period 1950-2015. In identifying the trends and turns of Indian financial sector, the paper adopts a three period classification viz., (a) the 1950s and 1960s, which exhibited some elements of instability associated with laissez faire but underdeveloped banking; (b) the 1970s and 1980s that experienced the process of financial development across the country under government auspices, accompanied by a degree of financial repression; and (c) the period since the 1990s till date, that has been characterized by gradual and calibrated financial deepening and liberalization. Focusing more the third period, the paper argues that as a consequence of successive reforms over the past 25 years, there has been significant progress in making interest and exchange rates largely market determined, though the exchange rate regime remains one of managed float, and some interest rates remain administered. Considerable competition has been introduced in the banking sector through new private sector banks, but public sector banks continue have a dominant share in the market. Contractual savings systems have been improved, but pension funds in India are still in their infancy. Similarly, despite the introduction of new private sector insurance companies coverage of insurance can expand much further, which would also provide greater depth to the financial markets. The extent of development along all the segments of the financial market has not been uniform. While the equity market is quite developed, activities in the private debt market are predominantly confined to private placement form and continue to be limited to the bluechip companies. Going forward, the future areas for development in the Indian financial sector would include further reduction of public ownership in banks and insurance companies, expansion of the contractual savings system through more rapid expansion of the insurance and pension systems, greater spread of mutual funds, and development of institutional investors. It is only then that both the equity and debt markets will display greater breadth as well as depth, along with greater domestic liquidity. At the same time, while reforming the financial sector, the Indian authorities had to constantly keep the issues of equity and efficiency in mind.

Financial markets regulation: models, evolution, efficiency

Accumulated experience in the development of financial markets confirms the importance of interrelations between the type of the chosen model of regulation and historically achieved “depth of financial structure”, as well as national institutional characteristics. Effective regulation model which takes into account these features became an indispensable condition for economic growth. The authors analyze patterns of development of regulation and supervision systems in the financial markets on a sample of 50 countries focusing on trends in integration of regulation and supervision. The calculations show that a new model of rigid integrated system of prudential supervision and regulation formed in RF on the basis of the Bank of Russia does not fully take into account the level of development of institutional investors and creates risks of excessive administrative pressure on non-bank financial institutions and competitive environment weakening. Solving these problems requires active effort on the part of government agencies and financial market participants.

Study on Information Mining Technology with Empirical Research on China's Securities Market Transactions’ Random Walk

this paper is in the context of China's securities market vigorously developing institutional investors, uses "Fractal Market Hypothesis" and rescaled range methods to deal with the data. By doing the information mining on those sample, the results show that China's securities market yield does not follow a random walk hypothesis and institutional investors yield does not follow a random walk hypothesis. This shows that after more than 10 years of vigorous development of institutional investors, the goal that stabilize the market and make the market more effectively has not been realized and continuing to increase the intensity of the development of the institutional investors is still needed

The appraisal of ordinary shares by Chinese financial analysts

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into recent financial analysis practice in the Chinese context. The paper aims to examine the approaches pursued and information used by Chinese financial analysts in investment appraisal of ordinary shares. The research seeks to explore influences upon analysts' decision making and how analysts perceived the Chinese investment environment.Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire based survey approach was used, conducted in 2003 with 65 Chinese financial analysts.Findings – The findings indicate that fundamental analysis was the predominant technique adopted in appraising equities in line with the development of institutional investors and improved market efficiency. Regarding information used to analyse companies, annual reports constituted the most influential source. Stock Markets in Transition Economies

Stock markets in transition economies are generally underdeveloped, with low market capitalization and turnover, even when compared to most emerging markets. Poor macro-conditions, weak legal protection for minority shareholders and limited development of institutional investors have impeded their development. While stock markets can be expected to grow in most transition economies, their scale will remain small relative to world stock markets. Furthermore, many corporations from transition economies are already raising funds and listing their shares abroad. Also given global stock market consolidation, this suggests that most transition economies are best off integrating their markets with those abroad.
