Innovation Culture as a Driver of a Firm’s Innovation Excellence: Evidence from Apple and Huawei

Innovation culture is a pivotal driver of a firm’s innovation excellence. This inspires employees to think and do the unthinkable. In that context, this case study uses Apple and Huawei as examples to analyse how innovation culture drives innovation excellence in firms. In such analysis, critical content analysis was integrated with unstructured interviews with product managers from Apple-Glasgow Stores in Scotland and Huawei’s Authorised Stores in Dubai-United Arab Emirates. The study aimed to extract critical information on Apple and Huawei’s innovation behaviours, culture and practices as well as their competition enhancing effects. Outcomes of such analysis were triangulated with the results of systematic review of core theories and literature on innovation culture creation and its leveraging effects on a firm’s performance. Findings revealed innovation culture to unlock employees’ overall improved creativity to think and do the unimaginable. This creates higher product, process, position and paradigm differentiations to leverage a firm’s overall competitiveness. Huawei’s innovation culture catalyses the embracement of higher level of employee creativity and innovativeness across different business functions as a daily business practice and way of life that defines how each and every activity is accomplished. This was found to drive improved quality, cost minimisation and creation of process efficiency advantages that are passed to customers through lower prices to bolster Huawei’s overall process and position competitiveness. Likewise Apple’s entrenched innovation practices and behaviours were found to create higher premium values that customers are willing to acquire even if the products are of significantly higher premium prices. Combined with Apple’s higher commitment to quality excellence as an innovation culture that delights employees to think and do the unthinkable, this was found to bolster Apple’s competitive edge to fetch higher returns as a leader in the global premium telecommunication and consumer electronics segment. Despite its competitive edge, Apple still faces challenges of lowering prices to fill gaps in the lower-income segments that Huawei and Samsung are using as the attack base, inspite suffering from the phenomenon of ‘Made in China are Cheap”. From these findings, the paper extracted an innovative culture development model that can be emulated by the emerging innovation ventures.

ПЕРЕДУМОВИ ІННОВАЦІЙНОГО УПРАВЛІННЯ ЗОВНІШНЬОЕКОНОМІЧНОЮ ДІЯЛЬНІСТЮ ПРОМИСЛОВИХ ПІДПРИЄМСТВ

The article is devoted to the study of the prerequisites for the introduction of innovative management approaches for the foreign economic activity of industrial enterprises, taking into account the aggravation of the situation in the foreign economic processes of Ukraine due to military aggression, which fundamentally changed the economic space of the functioning of domestic enterprises. The authors stated that under the conditions of martial law, the management of foreign economic activities of enterprises requires special attention in the context of ensuring competitive exports and realization of opportunities for stable cooperation with international partners. The article defines the prerequisites that will form the foundation for the effective restoration of foreign economic activity of industrial enterprises using innovative approaches. The authors include the following as key prerequisites for innovative management of the foreign economic activity of industrial enterprises: a deep understanding of the current state of the world economy and trade trends, the ability of the enterprise to adapt to changes in foreign markets, the development of its own innovative capacities, the establishment of an effective system of communication and cooperation with all interested parties, including state bodies, business partners, customers and other structures. Particular attention in the article is devoted to highlighting the prerequisites for the implementation of innovative management of foreign economic activities of industrial enterprises, which include the development of innovative culture in the organization, analysis and forecasting of foreign markets, innovative technologies and processes, knowledge management and training, partnership and cooperation networks. The systematization of the prerequisites for the implementation of innovative management of foreign economic activity enabled the authors of the article to form a number of promising directions for updating the management systems of foreign economic activity of enterprises of the Ukrainian machine-building industry during the war and post-war period. Considered in the article, the prerequisites of innovative management of foreign economic activity of industrial enterprises provide an opportunity to determine further directions of transformation of foreign economic activity management systems with the necessary further detailing of innovative management methods.

The impact of labor market institutions and corporate governance on the development of Russian innovation culture

Aim. The presented study aims to investigate the system of factors affecting the development of innovation culture in Russian companies.Tasks. Based on qualitative research, the author comparatively analyzes the main structural components of innovation culture in typologically different Russian companies; determines internal and external conditions for the development of innovation culture; substantiates the leading role of the government in regulating formal labor market institutions that form the patterns of innovation culture in society and facilitate the innovative development of Russian companies.Methods. This study uses the methods of analysis and synthesis, comparison and generalization, and general logical research methods.Results. Innovation in Russian companies involves not only new technologies and materials, the production of new products (services) and their introduction to the market, but also the creation of a cultural environment favorable for innovation. The key role in this process is played not only by internal corporate factors, but also by external ones. A company's internal innovation development system includes the strategic commitment of top management to innovation, creativity as the highest value of corporate culture, and implemented management practices aimed at increasing employee receptivity to innovation. System-wide factors of innovation culture are predetermined by the national education system and labor market institutions.Conclusions. The government plays a leading role in the formation of an innovation culture in society. Creative activity in the Russian Federation has only recently found financial and organizational support at the government level. Therefore, it is important not to lose this value orientation and continue the modernization of social processes aimed at the innovative development of the economy. The focus on the formation of innovative culture should be reflected in the activity of labor market institutions (the Ministry of Labor, employment services, migration service, etc., and in the mechanisms of labor market regulation (state employment policy, trade unions, social partnership, and collective agreements).

This study aims to produce a model of developing a culture of innovation through an HRM approach in HRM practices and a cultural approach. This research was conducted on cooperatives in Bali. The research population is cooperative in Bali. Respondents are cooperative managers. Total population is 1371 people with 93 as sample using Slovin formula. The object of research is about the culture of innovation, human capital, human resource practices, and local Balinese cultural values. Inferential statistics using Partial Least Square to analyze data and test hypotheses. The results of this study resulted in a model to strengthen the innovation culture determined by HRM, namely through an approach to HRM practices based on local cultural values. Culture in the form of values is an external factor that is able to encourage the internal environment to innovate. This study found that human capital did not mediate the influence of HRM practices on the culture of innovation, but HRM practices had an effect on human capital.

DOES CULTURE EAT STRATEGY? THE EMERGENCE OF COOPERATION CAPABILITY IN YOUNG FIRMS

Young firms benefit from cooperations in their development and cooperation capability is a prerequisite for a successful cooperation with partners. Despite its importance, research has neglected how this dynamic capability emerges in young firms. This study examines how innovation championing behaviour affects the cooperation capability. We introduce innovation strategy and innovation culture as two critical mediators in this relationship. Data from 283 young firms indicate that innovation culture is an essential mediator in the significant positive relationship between innovation championing behaviour and young firms’ cooperation capability. Surprisingly, innovation strategy does not directly affect the development of cooperation capability but fosters the development of innovation culture. The findings carry theoretical and practical implications for the emergence of cooperation capability in young firms by uncovering its origins and the intermediate transition process.

Approaches to development of innovation culture as a tool for gaining competitive advantage

Today, to survive in business, organizations are compelled to compete with other organizations. Therefore, they have no choice unless to be innovative. Innovation is the application of new ideas of creativity that can be new products, new services, or a new way of doing things. Without innovation, new ways of doing business cannot emerge at all, and most organizations will be forever caught up in old services and old ways. The continuous and inclusive innovation enhancement, is, in fact, a kind of systematic exploration, the aim of which is to find new ways and means to react to environmental changes and pressures. Since repeated reactions aren’t effective in today's complex and changing environments. Therefore, companies should constantly search for new and novel ways of interaction in the environment, and, in turn, affect those interactions and changes. In developing a culture of innovation that can support an organization to implement and leverage the innovation process, good human resource management and knowledge sharing should be considered. First, we describe definitions of innovation, then innovation necessity, advantages, and barriers impeding it are examined. Finally, the innovation cycle, innovation process and strategies for creating and developing a culture of innovation will be examined.

In the process of developing an enterprise's innovative strategy, the following main stages can be distinguished. Formulating a clear goal and using the principles of a strategic approach. Conducting research on the target audience and leading competitors. Defining the value proposition. Evaluation and development of the main advantages. Creation of innovative systems and methods. Different types of innovative strategies used by enterprises can be distinguished. Product, service, process, technological, business model, marketing, architectural innovation, etc. The article formulates the main advantages of strategic innovation management, defines the stages of innovation strategy implementation, highlights the main types of innovation strategies.

INNOVATIVE CULTURE DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHERS AND PUPILS AS A PEDAGOGICAL IDEA REALIZATION OF THE AUTHOR SCHOOL ON LINGUISTICS AND SPIRITUALITY

The article presents theoretical and methodological, organizational and pedagogical prin-ciples of innovative culture of teachers and pupils as a realization of the pedagogical idea of the author's school of linguistics and spirituality of Zarifa Aliieva Irpin specialized secondary school I-III Grades №12 with foreign languages (school of linguistics) of Kyiv region; The author's school model is seen as a prototype of qualitative changes in education, which depends on a team of professionals who expand the space of educa-tional opportunities for pupils development. The leading idea of the Author's School of Linguistics and Spirit-uality is the formation of a competitive, socially mobile, innovative, tolerant and spiritual personality. Gradu-ally realizing this goal, the teaching staff made every effort to create a positive image of the educational in-stitution, which determines: the presence of a relevant concept of the school of linguistics; implementation of long-term educational strategy; development of innovative culture of teachers and pupils; favorable moral and psychological climate in the team; availability of proper modern material and technical base; caring highly professional teaching staff; functioning of the school pupils organization «Country Roxolania». The introduction of the pedagogical idea of the author's school of linguistics and spirituality in the context of the development of innovative culture of teachers and pupils is based on current regulations. CONCEPTUAL AND TERMINOLOGICAL APPARATUS OF PROBLEM RESEARCH OF INNOVATIVE CULTURE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FUTURE MANAGER OF THE GENERAL SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION IN THE MASTER’S TRAINING PROCESS

Formulation of the problem. The need for a categorical interpretation of the thesaurus is due to methodological priorities for scientific, objectivity, systemic, integrity, unity, complexity and logic of the study. The correctness of the use of relevant concepts and categories is determined by the accuracy of their definitions, fully depends on the verification of the presented innovative culture concept of the leader. Consequently, there is a need for a comprehensive research analysis of conceptual and terminological apparatus of problem research of innovative culture development of the future manager of the general secondary educational institution in the master’s training process. Materials and Methods: Solving the highlighted aim, a set of methods of scientific research adequate to them were used, theoretical: a comparative analysis of conceptual and terminological apparatus of problem research of innovative culture development of the future manager of the general secondary educational institution in the master’s training process; a systematic analysis of conceptual and terminological apparatus of problem research of innovative culture development of the future manager of the general secondary educational institution in the master’s training process. Results. The article presents the innovation culture development of the future manager of general secondary educational institution as a systematically organized, respectively providing process in master's training, determined by the needs of society, state and customers of educational services and institutionalized, which substantiates the relationship and interdependence of innovation culture, which correlate with the content and pedagogically appropriate methodological systems of professional training at higher education. It is determined the IC development of the future manager of general secondary educational institution. Conclusions. Thus, modern theories of social development make it possible to identify the specifics of the innovative culture development and give grounds to conclude that the innovation and innovation culture development is a natural, necessary, historically determined and self-organized process of objectification and institutionalization of innovative content at the social and individual levels. It is important to understand that the emergence of innovation and innovation culture is possible only if the dialectical and synergetic nature of life is taken into account. For the innovation culture development is exceptional importance the openness of educational systems, the presence of the environment and mechanisms for the natural struggle of contradictory and opposing forces, the absence of authoritarian and artificial interference in the institutionalization of innovation culture.

Developing a Culture of Support to Advance and Accelerate Nursing Innovation.

Nurses everywhere are called to seek new and better ways of providing care in the complex and dynamic environments where they practise. The core of innovation is the creation of new ideas and use of existing ideas in new ways or in new settings. Today, innovation and fresh thinking are more important than ever as the world is changing rapidly and complexity is the norm. Nurse leaders are called to action to create the insights, cultures, structures and methodologies needed to promote the development and uptake of innovative ideas in nursing practice and interdisciplinary team work. This paper highlights three successful examples of nursing leadership in the development of a culture of innovation at the national (SE Health), provincial (Registered Nurses Foundation of Ontario's Nurse Innovator Awards) and local (Sinai Health) levels. The goal of these initiatives is to cultivate innovation as a way of being, thinking and doing, ensuring that it is inherent in nursing culture and visible in nursing practice, education and research that enhances patients' and care partners' experiences.

Design Thinking to Support The Innovative Culture of School Counselors

Previous research has found the low ability of millennial school counselors in Palembang to innovate. They only carry out activities that have become a tradition and habit (follower), rarely do program development, even they are used to uploading programs that are shared in group chat. That situation was contradicting with the concept of millennial as innovative generation and the opportunities for self-development provided by technological advances. Design thinking can be referred to as a way of expressing creativity to generate innovative ideas. The research aims to conceptualize the design thinking development of an innovative culture of school counselors. The research was conducted on 30 purposive samples, using descriptive methods which are then combined with the design thinking work step. The research resulted in 1) the main need for the development of an innovative culture through design thinking, 2) a prototype for an innovative culture development activity called "Monday briefing".

Does Culture Eat Strategy? The Antecedents of Cooperation Capability in Young ICT Firms

Cooperation enable young firms to access critical resources and skills that lie beyond their internal boundaries. However, to successfully create and capture value from cooperation, firms require the capability to cooperate. While empirical evidence highlights the importance of cooperation capability and its outcomes, research neglected how this dynamic capability emerges in young firms. The present study examines how the individual behavior of decision makers—innovation championing behavior—affects the cooperation capability of young firms. We introduce innovation strategy and innovation culture as the two crucial mechanisms in this relationship transforming the benefits of individual behavior into the organizational capability to cooperate. Drawing on a dataset of 283 young firms in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry, we found that innovation culture is the decisive mediator in the significant positive relationship between innovation championing behavior and firms’ cooperation capability. Surprisingly, innovation strategy, does not directly affect the development of cooperation capability, but rather fosters the development of innovation culture, which in turn increases firms’ capability to cooperate. We report theoretical and managerial implications emphasizing the value of innovation culture and its interplay with innovation strategy to transfer innovation championing behavior into cooperation capability in young ICT firms.

THE NATURE OF INNOVATION ECO-SYSTEM OF THE WESTERN KAZAKH STATE UNIVERSITY

It was a strong belief that higher education institutions are notoriously resistant to change. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, universities have quickly and effectively moved millions of students and educators online despite huge logistical and technological challenges. There are very few industries that have reacted in this way. In future leading universities will look for a new business model and apply disruptive innovations into the leaning process.Today is a right time for planning a long term innovation strategy. In recent years Kazakh higher education development has been accompanied by intensive economic growth and raising demand for high qualifies employers. The aim of this research is to reveal the ways of implementing high innovation and creativity approach in universities under example of Western Kazakhstan State University. This study examines the factors determining conditions for development of innovation culture across the university and industry. The methodology is based on expert interviews, reflective experiences; surveying research for innovation, incorporating the information on innovation landscape map, university infrastructure, human resources, PESTEL analysis as well as industry overview. The results show that WKSU needs frugal innovation, as it provides a new entrepreneurial landscape for companies in low-income countries with limited resources to develop innovations.

the article is devoted to the description of individual parts of the experimental work, the general purpose of which was to determine the effectiveness of implementation of the developed structural and functional model of the system of the innovative culture development of the future manager of general secondary educational institution in the master training process. Defining the pedagogical experiment was the task of checking the effectiveness of pedagogical conditions for the implementation of the specified structural and functional model, the ability to ensure the integrity of the process of development of the phenomenon under study.

ІННОВАЦІЙНА КУЛЬТУРА МАЙБУТНЬОГО КЕРІВНИКА ЗАКЛАДУ ЗАГАЛЬНОЇ СЕРЕДНЬОЇ ОСВІТИ: ЧИННИКИ РОЗВИТКУ

The article offers the classification and analysis of the factors for the formation of innovative culture of the future manager of the general secondary educational institution. A set of relevant factors is presented at the macro-, meso- and micro-levels of the innovative culture formation on the basis of systematic and comparative analysis of scientific literature. The first level includes the action of global, state-political, economic and scientific-technological, axiological and socio-cultural factors. It is emphasized that their importance is pointed out by the ability to determine the overall trajectory of world innovative development in general, and the state in particular, to outline the perspective directions of evolution of the innovative society. It is revealed that the innovatively ordered and innovatively directed system of the professional education and management training, quality management of educational innovations, availability of the system of quality assurance of education and postgraduate pedagogical education and self-education of management personnel are the factors, that belong to the meso-level. It is proved that the micro-level accumulates a systematic interaction of numerous factors at the local level (educational institution, manager’s personality, self-development), that are equally effective. Innovative culture at the educational institution level is formed due to its national and foreign policy, organizational and management activity, resource support, psychological climate, as well as personal qualities of the subjects of innovative activity. The opinion that among the key factors for the formation of innovative culture of the future manager, the pivotal one is the training system, that has an innovation-oriented vector of development. The main factor in the development of innovation culture is the professional training of innovators. Therefore, the development of the innovative culture of the future head of the educational establishment depends directly on the scientific-theoretical substantiation and practical implementation of the model of training of the innovator-manager. In our opinion, such training should focus on the development of innovative culture in several stages: motivational-cognitive, professional-practical, creative-activity and professionally relevant. The main task of this training is to develop a new type of modern leader with a high level of innovative culture and a significant proportion of the intellectual component in the human capital of the individual. It is stated that the main factor in the development of innovative culture is the professional training of the future manager of the general secondary educational institution, which depends directly on the scientific-theoretical substantiation and practical implementation of the innovator-manager’s model of training. We believe that this training should focus on the development of the innovative culture of the future manager of the general secondary educational institution in several stages: motivational-cognitive, vocational-practical, creative-activity and vocationally relevant. Analysis and assessment of innovative culture development

The vast number of transformations in the present business environment, its significant growth and the variety of its possibilities, together with the need for accelerated development of economic systems tightly linked to innovative culture development necessitated this paper. The task of this paper is to review personnel innovative development, directions including increase in labour productivity, educational potential, innovative qualification, innovative culture level and innovative climate through overcoming innovative barriers. Methods of contrastive analysis, dynamic analysis, method of decomposition and fuzzy sets theory’s tools form the methodological basis of the research. As a result of practical research, the paper considers author's classification of the personnel barriers to the innovation development in the company and the complex of their quantitative indicators. This research may be useful for management as the performed innovative culture diagnostics allow estimating the depth of personnel innovative development and personnel involved in innovative processes, forming conclusions of dynamics of overcoming personnel barriers to innovative activity.

Innovative development is a defining characteristic of developed societies. At the moment, innovations remain an issue demanded not only by the economy, but also by the entire society. In recent decades in Ukraine, several conceptual models of innovative development were determined in the normative documents; however, they have not succeeded in achieving their implementation. The purpose of the article is to study the evolution of conceptual models of innovative development in Ukraine, to form their classification according to the criteria of linearity and integration and to develop directions for their improvement. To achieve the goal of the research, the basic principles of the proposed models of innovation development in the relevant normative documents (concepts and strategies) are summarized and a conceptual configuration of innovation development is proposed in order to activate it and introduce new organizational approaches. The author used content, descriptive analytical and graphic research methods. The article describes the features of linear / nonlinear and integrated / non-integrated models and identifies the four main stages of the development of innovation models in Ukraine: (i) till 1999 – the formation of a linear model, (ii) 1999-2009 – interactive, (iii) 2009-2012 –functionally integrated, (iv) 2012-present – system-integrated, networking model. The conceptual scheme of interaction in the innovation process is proposed. It is substantiated that the effectiveness of innovative models can only be realized through appropriate motivation – the awakening of business (or social - in the case of social innovations) interest in innovations, since they are the demanders and recipients of innovations. Such motivation can be formed / raised through the wider and deeper interactions of the participants in the innovation process in the case of non-linear and well-integrated models of innovation development. Implementation of the models should take place through appropriate organizational formats, favourable to and generating regular interactions, as well as viable relationships. Important tools for implementation of advanced innovative models are smart specialization, funding multilateral engagement of NIS’s participants in the joint research projects and development of innovative culture and improvement of managerial approaches.
