Technological innovation capacity of MNEs in China: studying the cross-cultural effects

ABSTRACT This study investigates how home country cultural dimensions influence the technological innovation capacity (TIC) of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in China. Drawing on Hofstede’s cultural framework, we examine five key dimensions of national culture in relation to TIC indicators, including patents, R&D centres, and foreign direct investment. We also consider how the cultural distance between home and host countries moderates these relationships. Data were collected from a sample of prominent MNEs in China across diverse home countries and industries. Using structural equation modelling, results reveal significant positive effects of power distance, collectivism, and long-term orientation on TIC. However, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity have no significant impact. Cultural distance positively moderates the effects of power distance and uncertainty avoidance, but not other dimensions. These findings contribute new insights into how home country culture shapes MNEs’ development of innovation capacity abroad. The results have key implications for research integrating culture and innovation in international business.

Analysis of Digital Transformation of E-commerce Enterprise Management and Enterprise Development Prospects Based on Carbon Neutral Targets

Abstract This paper introduces the green technology innovation capacity under the carbon neutral goal as the dependent variable and makes research hypotheses on the digital transformation of e-commerce enterprise management and enterprise development. The research hypotheses model between the three is constructed by both quantile regression and multivariate linear regression, and the panel threshold adjustment model between green technology innovation capacity, digital transformation and enterprise development is given. Empirical evidence is used to verify the relevant influencing factors of digital specialization and enterprise development of e-commerce enterprise management under the carbon neutral goal from multiple perspectives, including correlation test, benchmark regression, quantile regression, and panel threshold adjustment test. The results show that the correlation coefficients between the potential variables of the model are all below 0.1, suggesting a significant correlation. The 1% level showed significant differences in the ability to innovate green technologies, digital transformation of e-commerce enterprise management, and high-quality enterprise development. The single threshold value of green technology innovation capacity on the ability of e-commerce enterprises to manage digital transformation is 1.6829, and the double threshold value on the high-quality development of enterprises is 0.6572 and 1.6847, respectively. The green technology innovation capacity of e-commerce enterprises needs to be strengthened under the goal of carbon neutrality in order to promote the digital transformation and high-quality development of e-commerce enterprises.

Does employee engagement promote innovation? The Facilitators of innovative workplace behavior via mediation and moderation

The demonstration of innovative behaviour by employees plays a crucial role in enabling organisations to effectively respond and adapt to the rapidly evolving business landscape. There has been an increase in research aimed at identifying the factors that contribute to the progressive development of innovative capacity, as there has been a substantial rise in interest in the comprehension of innovation mechanisms. Drawing on self-determination theory, this study aims to investigate the effect of employee engagement on innovative work behavior. The mediating role of employee voice behavior was also explored. Additionally, this study examines the potential moderating impact of perceived distributive justice on the relationship between employee engagement and innovative work behavior. A quantitative study was undertaken using a sample size of 180 participants who were employed in the manufacturing sector of Pakistan. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the results of the study. The results revealed that engaged employees are more likely to exhibit innovative behavior. Furthermore, employee voice was discovered to fully mediate the relationship between employee engagement and innovative behavior, as well as to have a significant influence on both employee engagement and innovative behavior. However, the findings did not support the hypothesis that perceived distributive justice moderates the association between employee engagement and innovative behavior. Future research directions and managerial implications were also mentioned.

Pathways to tourism industry ecologization: A technology-organization-environment configuration framework

Global tourism sustainability goals call for a higher tourism industry ecologization (TIE) level. Previous studies have focused on TIE’s conceptual definition and assessment framework but have not yet to explore its driving mechanisms. This study builds an analytical framework for TIE based on the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework. It proposes that TIE depends not on a single condition but on the configurational effects of technology, organization, and environment. Using Getis-Ord Gi* to analyze the spatial distribution of TIE and then fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to analyze the effect of conditions on TIE, the results show that: 1) From 2011 to 2019, the level of TIE in 30 Chinese provinces is generally stable, but its spatial distribution varies. 2) There are three configurations to achieve high TIE levels: green drive, organization pull environment, and comprehensive conditions drive. Moreover, there are two configurations to achieve not-high TIE levels: comprehensive conditions miss and organization-environment miss. 3) Fiscal decentralization and industrial structure are the main conditions for high levels of TIE, and low green cover is the primary condition for non-high levels of TIE. The impact of technology innovation capacity and digital economy development level on TIE depends on specific combinations of conditions. This study provides a valuable reference for tourism destination managers coordinating technical, organizational, and environmental conditions to promote TIE according to local conditions.

Analysis of the spatial and temporal evolution process and development trend of innovation capability of Chinese sports industry.

The paper uses spatial panel data on the number of patents in the field of sports in each province from 2017-2022 to explore the spatial and temporal evolution process of the innovation capacity of China's sports industry and analyze its development trend based on theories related to economic geography, using exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and Spatial-temporal correlation analysis research methods. The study shows that: 1. there is a large spatial regional disparity in the innovation capacity of China's sports industry, showing an obvious pattern of strength in the east and weakness in the west. 2. there is an obvious phenomenon of spatial agglomeration in the innovation capacity of China's sports industry and the agglomeration phenomenon in space is gradually increasing. 3. there is a spatial spillover effect in the innovation capacity of China's sports industry, and the inward spillover continues to strengthen mainly into Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangsu provinces, while the outward spillover mainly goes to Guangdong, Hubei, Hebei, Hunan, Sichuan. Sports industry innovation capacity development put forward three suggestions: to promote the development of sports industry in the northwest region; to play the advantages of regional characteristics of sports industry; to accelerate the integration of neighboring regions to build the process. in order to help the high-quality development of sports industry.

How Corporate Culture Influences the Innovation Capacity Development: An Empirical Study of HRD and Learning Cultures

The article postulates the thesis that reciprocal adjustment between self-organization and external organization and their connection with the different phases of competence development (demand analysis, preparation, realization, transfer and evaluation) offers enormous potential for improvement. Theoretical approaches examine questions such as the characteristics of learning cultures and the extent to which they influence job-related competence development, as well as the relationship between corporate cultures and learning cultures in addition to opportunities and constraints in the configuration of these two aspects. The results of the empirical study reveal that large enterprises emphasize the central role of HRD for the innovation capacity of an organization more than do small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME). In order to ensure the desired effects in the competence develop-ment's point of view, it is of vital importance that the self-regulation competence of organizational members is developed. The implications of this research are also extensively discussed.

Validation of a training model of professional competence management of patient safety in intensive care in the Bachelor of Nursing degree

Introduction: the pedagogical model as a scientific result of educational research, understood as a representation of essential elements of the training process or some of its parts. Objective: to validate a model for the formation of the professional competence "Management of patient safety in intensive care" in the Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Method: A study was carried out at the Baracoa Medical Sciences Branch, belonging to the Guantánamo University of Medical Sciences from 2016-2018, methods such as methodological triangulation were used through the criteria of 20 experts by the Green method. Results: The consensus general of the experts was "strongly in agreement" for the foundations that support the training model of professional competence "Management of patient safety in intensive care" in the Nursing Bachelor's degree and its quality. Conclusions: the training model of professional competence "Management of patient safety in intensive care" is accepted as valid and feasible for its implementation in practice, it constitutes a novel and relevant contribution for the transformation of the training process in the career of Nursing, from the Emergency Nursing subject in the fourth year, which promotes the relationship between the systematization of skills and the development of innovation capacity in students to guarantee patient safety.

A Study on the Coupling Coordination Degree of Regional Innovation Capacity and Regional Economic Development in China

目前, 中国经济已经步入新常态, 经济增长速度转变为由中高速增长。但是经济在高速发展下出现了很多经济社会问题, 人口老龄化, 环境污染等。改变以往传统的粗放型增长方式转为依靠创新作为中国经济发展的核心战略, 已成为中国新常态下经济发展的必要措施。创新不仅是决定区域竞争力的因素之一, 也是区域经济发展的引擎, 在打破中等收入国家的陷阱方面发挥着重要作用。结合中国现阶段经济发展的特点, 应该尽快实现创新要素与创新驱动转变的新变革, 促使中国实现长期经济可持续发展。因此, 有必要分析两者的耦合协调发展现状, 并研究分析两者之间的关系, 对区域经济发展具有重要的参考意义。根据前人研究的基础上, 本文从创新投入, 创新产出和创新环境三个角度构建了区域创新能力评价体系。从经济稳定性, 经济效率性, 经济协调性, 经济开放性, 经济共享性和经济绿色性六个维度构建了经济发展评价体系, 在此基础上, 运用耦合协调度模型, 从2006, 2010, 2015, 2020年的四个时间点, 分析了中国30个省市自治区的区域创新能力与区域经济发展的耦合协调发展状况。其结果表明, 从区域创新能力与区域经济发展的综合得分来看, 中国大部分省市自治区的区域创新能力与区域经济发展水平都低于平均水平。中国整体耦合协调度处于中度协调, 距离高度协调阶段还有较大差距。处于高度协调和极度协调的省份数量不多, 但都分布在东部经济发达地区。处于中度协调和低度协调的绝大部分省市自治区都处于创新能力滞后型。四大区域的耦合协调度呈现出东部地区>中部地区>东北地区>西部地区的特征。

As empresas estão enfrentando um ambiente de negócios cada vez mais complexo e dinâmico, recorrendo à inovação como alternativa para elevar sua capacidade competitiva. No entanto, a emergência de novas tecnologias e a mudança para um novo modelo de desenvolvimento econômico, que combina aspectos econômico-financeiros com perspectivas socialmente responsáveis e ambientalmente conscientes, tem gerado desafios acima da capacidade de resposta destas empresas. O problema reside em como se ajustar às novas realidades, rápida e assertivamente. Estudos recentes apontam que as empresas precisam incrementar a aprendizagem organizacional para desenvolver capacidade de inovação, agora não mais sob parâmetros tradicionais, mas, adotando novos modelos, como a inovação responsável. Este estudo tem o objetivo de apontar fatores determinantes para que, concomitantemente, iniciativas de aprendizagem organizacional e desenvolvimento de capacidade de inovação possam facilitar a inserção da inovação responsável em seus processos. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo e exploratório, que contou com uma revisão da literatura científica que trata dos conceitos de aprendizagem organizacional, capacidade de inovação e inovação responsável. Os resultados mostram que aprendizagem organizacional e desenvolvimento de capacidade de inovação podem facilitar a implementação da inovação responsável no processo inovativo de empresas, contribuindo para a transição ao modelo de desenvolvimento responsável e sustentável. Esta implementação pode garantir maior capacidade competitiva, diferenciando os produtos e serviços ofertados pelas empresas no mercado, além de se alinhar às novas demandas de stakeholders, principalmente, colaboradores e consumidores atentos às novas realidades tecnológicas e socioambientais.

Innovation labs as organisational catalysts for innovation capacity development: A systematic literature review

Innovation labs are increasingly adopted as an organizational and management initiative to catalyse innovation and support the development of an organizational innovation capacity. Despite the growing attention to the role of innovation labs, the extant studies appear scattered. There is a lack of a comprehensive understanding of their relevance as innovation spaces for developing and sustaining organisations' innovation processes. For this reason, this study aims to expand and update the existing understanding of innovation labs by demonstrating their evolution from closed innovation spaces within large firms to organisational catalysts that foster open, collaborative and user-driven innovation dynamics. Adopting a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on 152 peer-reviewed journal articles, the study provides an integrative picture of the current literature on innovation labs. In particular, the study proposes a reference framework distinguishing Innovation Labs’ typologies and critical dimensions, a comprehensive definition of an innovation lab, a framework to assess the maturity level of innovation labs, and a research agenda to advance the understanding of innovation labs further.

High-Quality Development Measure and Promotion Path of Rural Cultural Tourism Industry Integration-Anhui Province as an Example

The integration of cultural and tourism industries has become an important grip for rural revitalization. Based on the new development concept, the index system of high-quality development of rural cultural and tourism industry integration is constructed, and the entropy value method and natural breakpoint method are used to measure and classify the level of high-quality development of rural cultural and tourism integration in Anhui Province. The results show that the level of high-quality development of rural cultural tourism integration in Anhui Province is steadily increasing, but there are problems such as insufficient innovation capacity and unbalanced regional development. Based on this, we propose the promotion path for the high-quality development of rural cultural tourism industry integration: strengthen the soft and hard accessories to help rural cultural tourism innovation and improvement; find the regional characteristics to promote the coordinated development of rural cultural tourism; focus on ecological protection to lead the green development of rural cultural tourism; release the development potential to expand the openness of rural cultural tourism; improve the support system to improve the sharing mechanism of rural cultural tourism.

Chinese Firms’ Acquisition of Innovation Capability from Overseas: Approaches by State- versus Private-Owned Firms

ABSTRACTThrough two in-depth case studies, we compare the approaches of a state-owned enterprise (SOE), Beijing Automotive Industries Holding Co., and a privately owned enterprise (POE), Geely, to acquire and absorb advanced technological knowledge to enhance their innovation capabilities. Each company acquired advanced knowledge from troubled famous Swedish automakers and upgraded their products technologically. Analyzing data mainly collected from secondary sources identifies major differences in approaches and actions at each acquisition step rooted in the type of ownership. We juxtapose these differences with insights from the literature on knowledge acquisition and research on firm ownership. Our findings show that the POE seeks the strategic goal of synergistic technology integration for better innovation and economic performance. In contrast, the SOE pursues national objectives with less regard for market success. This SOE focuses on an independent approach to knowledge absorption and development during their acquisition, whereas the POE emphasizes collaboration in innovation capacity development. This study provides insights into Chinese firms’ positioning on innovation development on the global stage, comparative capitalism, and the particular case of state capitalism in China.

Assessing the Level of Innovation of Poland from the Perspective of Regions between 2010 and 2020

The growing and expanding zone of the free-market economy results in increasing competition in the global market, which leads companies to seek and implement solutions that will give them a competitive advantage. The authorities of countries and regions are also increasingly involved in this process, seeing it as an opportunity to develop and build a knowledge-based economy. One of the main factors improving competitiveness and providing opportunities for development is innovation, particularly developed at the local level. For this reason, activities that support research and development of innovation at the regional level are increasingly appreciated and gain greater importance. This article refers to regional innovation in Poland by analyzing its level between 2010 and 2020. The basis of the analysis was 15 selected indicators characterizing three dimensions related to the innovative development of regions, namely innovative capacity, innovative position, and economic development. This assessment was regarded as a multi-criteria problem, for which the CODAS method was used. Its application made it possible to achieve the main objective of this paper, which was to determine the level of innovation of studied regions and, on this basis, to create their ranking. In addition, the evaluation of the level of innovation of the regions for each of the analyzed dimensions was also carried out, and the relationship between the level of economic development and the capacity and innovative position of the regions was specified. The measure for evaluating the level of innovation, for each case studied, was the value of the Hi index, taken as a synthetic measure of regional innovation. The results show that the level of innovation for the regions in Poland varies widely as a function of time as well as the location of these regions. Differences in the dynamics of change and different levels of development of the analyzed dimensions characterizing innovation are evident. The results provide new knowledge in the field of regional development and should be used when creating a regional development strategy for individual regions, Poland, and the EU.

Managing, Structuring and Scaling Innovation in International Organizations

This article summarizes my award-winning dissertation on innovation for transforming the United Nations (UN) to solve the grand challenges in a technologically evolving world. It answers: how do the processes of managing, structuring and scaling innovation impact international organizations and the fulfilment of their missions? Findings show that innovative initiatives lead to the development of responsible innovation capacity, that scaling digital solutions for wicked problems requires global/local ecosystem actors to take on new roles in each location, and that innovation units create value through relationships not owned by one party. These contributions exhibit the cross-sectoral potential for delivering global impact through innovation. It also shows that IB scholars have the frameworks and tools to move beyond traditional contexts to address real problems in the global economy.

Modelling the antecedents for export orientation, innovation capacity and performance for South African manufacturing SMEs

Orientation: In order to improve performance, South African manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need to constantly look at expanding their markets by exploring export opportunities and innovating their products and services.Research purpose: The aim of this study was to model the antecedents for export orientation, innovation capacity and SME performance.Motivation for the study: Although the influence of export orientation and innovation capacity on firm performance is well established, this study has brought together these capabilities as well as SME absorptive capacity, knowledge management and entrepreneurial competence into one model.Research design, approach and method: The study adopted a quantitative research approach and employed a cross-sectional survey of 207 SMEs in South Africa. Structural equation modelling was employed for data analysis using AMOS 26.0.Main findings: Absorptive capacity and knowledge management capabilities are certainly significant capabilities that should be embedded in the SME business, in view of their role in positively influencing the development of export orientation and innovation capacity, and that the influence of entrepreneurial competence is not significant enough. The results of the study showed that the primary data collected and analysed fit the posited model.Practical/managerial implications: With SMEs seeking to enter the export market faced with a number of challenges as they begin to explore unchartered waters, the ability to learn and assimilate new knowledge will stand SMEs in good stead as they expand their markets beyond the present boundaries.Contribution/value-add: The study’s findings extend the principle of distributed focus of attention into a possible new theory called SME Export and Innovation Attention Theory.

Innovation Capacity, Industrial Structure, and Regional Development of High Quality: Empirical Research Based on the County Level

The key to China's regional high-quality development lies in county-level coordination and promotion. Therefore, based on 2847 county-level administrative units in China, this paper uses empirical analysis methods such as dynamic spatial panel Dobbin model and intermediary effect model to study.Then we test the relationship between the industrial structure of county innovation capacity and regional development of high quality. The results showed that (1) the regional development of high quality at the county level in China was generally distributed in clusters, and the agglomeration had a further trend of strengthening. (2) The innovation ability and industrial structure also had a positive effect on the regional development of high quality at the county level, and the result was significant. (3) Innovation had both direct and indirect effects on regional development of high quality. Industrial structure and regional development of high quality had strong spatial and temporal dependence effects.

A Study on the Promotional Effect and Mechanism of National e-Commerce Demonstration City Construction on Green Innovation Capacity of Cities

Green innovation precisely reflects China’s new development concept and is the general trend for urban development in the future. In addition, e-commerce might become an important breakthrough platform to promote urban green innovation. In order to explore the impact of the construction of national e-commerce demonstration cities on urban green innovation, this paper aimed to theoretically analyze the potential relationship between the two and the transmission mechanism. At the same time, we have examined the panel data from 297 prefecture level cities in China from 2005 to 2018 to explore the implementation effect of the pilot policies by using difference-in-differences and carried out a series of robustness tests. The results showed that: (i) The pilot policy of e-commerce demonstration cities exhibited a significant promotion effect on the green innovation capacity of the different cities, and in general, the promotion effect of the pilot policy is dynamically sustainable. (ii) Analysis of the further influence mechanism showed that the pilot policy could effectively promote the development of urban green innovation capacity by enhancing the level of urban informatization, thereby attracting the concentration of scientific and technological talents. This in turn can facilitate urban innovation and the entrepreneurship environment, among which the boosting effect of optimizing the urban innovation and entrepreneurship environment was the greatest. (iii) In terms of heterogeneity, the pilot policies showed significant positive effects on all the regions to which the cities belong, while the boosting effects were more significant for cities with large populations, non-central cities, and the general science and education cities. The findings of this study not only enrich the research results in the field of urban green innovation, but also have clear policy implications, which can provide useful guidance and reference value for the work of relevant departments.

Capacidades dinâmicas a partir de uma perspectiva de processos e rotinas: um estudo no setor metal mecânico

Objective: Understand the process of development of dynamic capacities in the perspective of the processes and routines of search and innovation in companies of the metal mechanic sector located in the southern region of Brazil.Methodology / Approach Exploratory and descriptive research, qualitative approach. The technical procedure was a multiple case study, carried out with three organizations in the metal mechanic segment in southern Brazil. For data collection, interviews were conducted with eighteen managers. The data were organized and analyzed through content analysis. The established categories were guided by the identification of the component elements and organizational mechanisms for the development of dynamic capacities (DC), proposed by Meirelles and Camargo (2014).Originality / Relevance: The research presents new and illuminating insights for understanding how DCs are developed. By identifying which routines and processes provide for the development of DCs, the research contributes to the understanding of how the process of DC development takes place in organizations.Fidings: The results show that the DC of the investigated companies are made up of search and innovation processes and routines that enable the management and mobilization of organizational resources, in order to meet the needs and changes of the market.Theoretical / methodological contributions: The model based on the proposal by Meirelles and Camargo (2014), is capable of contributing to the prioritization of actions necessary for the development of absorptive, adaptive and innovative capacities. This characteristic of the model is important, as it directs the manager to those actions that can actually interfere in the evolution of the organization.

Analysis of Trending Hi-Tech and Software Industry in Bangladesh

Hi-Tech/Software Technology parks are being developed in many countries to create an efficient work environment for knowledge based industrial development. Major aim of these technology parks is to attract foreign companies to set up operations and to transfer the indigenous technological capability for the development of the local industries. The aim of this work is to find out factors that influence technology park development and a suitable strategic framework for successful implementation of Hi-Tech (HTP) and Software Technology Park (STP) in Bangladesh. For this study Analytic Hierarchy Process is applied as a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Method (MCDM) which is a technology assessment tool. The assessment has been conducted by considering infrastructure, strategic & business support & governance as criteria and basic facility, digital facility, social facility, research & strategic facility, industrial chain & innovation facility, capacity development, policy support, operational modality, and park management as sub criteria. IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software also used for identifying the key variables.
