Activity Theory Study of China’s Rural Book House Project

This study explores why China’s rural information projects tend to be inefficient by identifying the dynamic mechanisms driving the construction and development of China’s Rural Book House Project (RBHP). A qualitative survey was used to collect data from 35 participants in the RBHP and to analyze the data through the lens of activity theory. Two dynamic mechanisms were found, namely power coordination and benefit protection, with the former characterized by compulsion, self-interest, and inefficient punitive measures and the latter by the participants’ differing objectives when pursuing benefits. The interaction of these mechanisms drove the RBHP forward. The findings of the study suggest the development process of the RBHP and other similar projects need to be reanalyzed from an integrative, dynamic and connected perspective. By way of concluding, insights concerning the measures the Chinese government could take to resolve the issues confronted in rural information service development as well as the need for information professionals to take a critical stance toward their community practice are offered.

E006 Providing information on arthritis medication: a service evaluation

Abstract Background/Aims Traditionally patients commencing disease modifying anti-rheumatic medications (DMARDs) attended a face to face consultation with a rheumatology nurse or pharmacist, to discuss benefits, concerns and safety monitoring. The pandemic has led to an increase in the use of remote methods of information sharing including telephone consultations. The aim of this service evaluation was to elicit patients preferences on receiving information on arthritis medications to help inform service development. Methods A service evaluation with contributions from patients and stakeholders was designed and registered with the trust. Patients who were commencing or taking DMARDs attending, one of two hospital sites, in North Staffordshire were asked to complete a short questionnaire from November 2022-April 2023. Some patients completed the questionnaire at the end of their telephone drug counselling appointment with the assistance of the nurse whilst others completed the questionnaire whilst attending in person for their appointment. The questionnaire focused on the preferred format for receiving information on arthritis medications including a face to face appointment with a health professional (even if this meant a wait), telephone consultation, attending a group counselling session, having a drug information leaflet with the option to contact a health professional to answer any questions or watching a video on a device with internet access (computer, smart phone or tablet). The importance of receiving information on the same day as commencing treatment was also explored. Results 64 patients took part in the survey. No demographic data was collected. The most popular method for receiving information on arthritis medications was a face to face appointment, even if it meant a delay in starting medication (n = 32,50%). The second most popular method was an information leaflet with the option to discuss any concerns via the telephone (n = 12,19 %). The third preference to receive information were via a video, again with the option to discuss concerns remotely (n = 10, 16%) or a telephone appointment, even if it meant a delay in starting medication (n 10,16%) Surprisingly although no patients expressed a preference to attend a group counselling session, 36 (56%) would attend if offered. When presented with the option of having information on the same day as the decision was made to commence medication, or, having to wait to discuss the mediation with a health professional, there was a strong preference to see a health professional (n = 46, 72%) Conclusion Patients clearly value discussing commencing DMARDs with a health professional even if this means a delay in treatment. Having just one approach to information giving does not equate with individual needs and a range of options regarding information delivery that the patient can select from is required. Disclosure S. Exploring young people with eating difficulties and their caregivers' experiences of person‐centred counselling

AbstractBackgroundThere has been a significant increase in the number of young people with eating difficulties (EDs), and current waiting times are not meeting the standard recommended by the National Health Service. Therefore, TIC+, a mental health charity in Gloucestershire, launched an ED counselling service, TEDS. The service aimed to promptly provide young people with person‐centred counselling as an alternative option for support.AimsVery few studies have investigated the experience of individuals with EDs who are engaging with person‐centred counselling, and exploration of this can help us to ascertain whether the approach should be more widely deployed while also informing service development for TEDS.Materials and MethodsThis study qualitatively explored young people and their caregivers' experiences of the service using semi‐structured interviews; four young people and four caregivers took part. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsThe findings revealed that the person‐centred counselling provided was valuable for young people, with improvements to their EDs evident.DiscussionHowever, there were several barriers to counselling that must be addressed. Furthermore, caregivers experienced a sense of loss of control and helplessness, which may have ramifications for young people too, demonstrating a need to consider how best to support caregivers.ConclusionThere is preliminary support for the use of person‐centred counselling for young people with eating difficulites.

Flipbook-based personal development information service model for enhancing self-awareness in late adolescents

Purpose: This study aims to develop a flipbook-based personal development information service model and examine the increase in self-awareness of late adolescents as a measure of its effectiveness. Method: This research used development research methods with an ADDIE design. The instruments used in this study were validation and practicality sheets, model needs analysis questionnaires, self-awareness questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The data processing used in this research is by processing data on the model's validity and practicality, and N-gain test analysis and Paired Sample t-test using SPSS version 24 were also carried out to evaluate effectiveness. Results: The research results obtained are: 1) assessment of the feasibility of the flipbook-based personal development information service model shows a high validity category with an average value of 91%, and its practicality is considered very practical to use with an average value of 87%; 2) assessment of effectiveness, there is a Sig.2 tailed value of 0.000 < 0.025, so Ho is rejected, and Ha is accepted, as well as an increase in the average (Gain) of pretest and post-test data of 0.60, which is classified as a medium criterion. Based on the research results, the developed product model is effective and contributes to increasing self-awareness among high school students in late adolescence.

Smart River Information Services in managing Nile River navigation system

Abstract In terms of the significance of incorporating smart techniques into large river navigation systems to increase inland navigation competitiveness, this article introduces the development of smart River Information Services (RIS) in Egypt based on smart information and communication technologies as real-time tracking systems, Open Geographic Information Systems, and Nile River Information Systems, as well as proposes measures to tackle the challenges that may be faced, compared with experiences and knowledge of RIS in large river smart navigation systems. This comparison creates new frameworks for the future development of using smart technology in inland waterways in Egypt. It could be concluded that advanced navigation technologies and infrastructures are still being developed in Egypt and are not yet available. Almost all of Egypt's Vessel Traffic Services station equipment and applications are imported from Europe. Undoubtedly, there will be at least a 5- to 10-year time lag for Egypt to develop independent RIS to its full extent. It is necessary to keep good cooperation with the European and Chinese inland sector and refer to their experience and knowledge.

The role of experience and diversity on research consortia’ performance: an exploratory approach

AbstractIn the realm of academic engagement, this study directs its focus toward a policy instrument that has received surprisingly scant attention within the literature, despite its substantial investment: European Union-funded research projects. These projects are designed to foster collaboration and establish a framework that supports and fortifies the creation and dissemination of exceptional knowledge and cutting-edge technologies. These endeavors are anticipated to fuel economic growth, spur social development, and address global challenges. Within this study, we delve into the impact of team experience and diversity on the research performance of consortia — groups of organizations — that have been successfully awarded funding within the FP7 and H2020 funding schemes. In order to dissect the influence of learning, our analysis is confined to consortia that have collaborated on multiple occasions. Drawing from data sourced from Community Research and Development Information Service, our findings unveil that beyond the monetary allocation, an array of team attributes and environmental factors play a role in augmenting team performance.

Traditional data storage and query methods face challenges of storage space and query efficiency, and the ability to process real-time geolocation data becomes critical in Geographic Information Services positioning systems that require servers to achieve millisecond-level response speeds. In addition to this, in geolocation services, for a given latitude and longitude information, it is necessary to quickly determine whether it exists or matches some specific location in the map service. The common traditional information finding algorithm in geographic location service is B-tree, and this paper proposes a geographic location information finding algorithm based on the Bloom filter, which mainly solves two problems. One is the storage problem of large amounts of latitude and longitude information; the other is how to convert the data stored in bytes level to bits level, which greatly reduces the space complexity and the inefficient information finding. The Bloom filter reduces the query time to linear time complexity O(n). The fastest query time for 5 million items of latitude and longitude information can reach 3.12 seconds. This article will illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method through a real-time traffic navigation scenario.

Forecasting the population development of within-season insect crop pests in sub-Saharan Africa: the Pest Risk Information Service

Abstract Smallholder farmers are the mainstay of the agricultural economies of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where they produce several crops, predominantly centered on maize. Smallholder productivity remains limited resulting from a range of confounding factors, but a primary cause is loss from pests and diseases, particularly insects. To improve productivity, recommendations for the mitigation of crop loss globally include early-warning and management systems for in-season indigenous pests. There are many early-warning systems in temperate regions; however, such systems are poorly established in Africa. This is in part due to the need for a combination of pest modeling, data handling and dissemination infrastructure, capacity, and resource provision. While each of these components is progressing in Africa, the means to successfully deploy such systems remain limited. To bridge this, the development of the Pest Risk Information Service (PRISE) began in 2017 for farmers in SSA. Implemented in Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, and Zambia, PRISE developed temperature-driven phenology models for major maize, bean, and tomato pests. Using downscaled and processed Earth Observation data to drive the models, PRISE partnered with African national agencies to communicate pre- and in-season pest alerts that forecast the time to act against key insect pests. Alerts were designed to be integrated into country-specific Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) recommendations to provide a complementary package to agricultural stakeholders. End line studies with farmers showed that those who received information about the target crops including PRISE pest forecasts, generally reported better outcomes in terms of reduced losses and increased incomes compared with farmers who did not.

European Union underinvestment in endometriosis research

BackgroundEndometriosis is considered one of the conditions that receives disproportionately low research funding relative to its burden. However, the volume of funding provided by the European Commission (EC) for this disease in the last decades is poorly known among researchers and policymakers. This study aimed to estimate the commitment to endometriosis research by the European Union (EU) over the years. MethodsResearch projects dedicated or partially related to endometriosis were identified in the COmmunity Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS) database that inventories EU projects. From the database, we extracted all the items using the keyword “endometriosis” from the inception to 2023. Research projects retrieved were classified in three groups according to the level of commitment of the projects to the specific field. Main findingsOf the 145,983 items overall retrieved for all the fields in CORDIS, n = 27 were found to be related to endometriosis, of which n = 10 were endometriosis-specific projects and n = 7 were partially related to endometriosis. The endometriosis-specific projects received overall funds for about 15 million euros. Of the n = 10 projects specifically related to endometriosis, n = 4 aimed to identify candidate diagnostic biomarkers associated with the disease and n = 3 had a broader approach focused on both improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic measures for the disease. ConclusionsConsidering the economic and societal burden incurred by endometriosis, EU investments for the disease research has been so far limited. Research projects funded were mainly dedicated to the diagnosis of the disease while few projects focused on disease etiopathogenesis and treatment.

Representation and indexing assessment of the Russian academic journals in Web of Science Core Collection database

Currently, the Russian academic and publishing communities are witnesses and participants of significant changes in access to scientific information, the system of bibliometric assessment, and scientific communication. Despite some successful initiatives of the Russian academic journals, government structures for scientific and technical information, as well as commercial companies in changing one resources with others, development of new system of bibliometric evaluation and development of novel information services, it seems unreasonable to give up significant achievements of the last decades. Particularly, it is important to maintain the level of visibility and increase the quality of Russian academic journals in Web of Science Core Collection, although submission of new titles is now suspended. Due to the highest authority and wide use of this system worldwide, maintaining the proper level of visibility of the Russian journals in Web of Science database is believed to be a priority task. The paper discusses current problems concerning evaluation of representation of Russian academic serials in Journal Citation Reports and certain articles in Web of Science Core Collection in the light of lack of access to full-function versions of these databases. Updated list of Russian journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports / Web of Science as of 2023 is prepared.

Development of an innovative computerized assessment of instrumental activities of daily living

AbstractBackgroundFunctional impairment is a diagnostic criterion for dementia and distinguishes mild cognitive impairment (MCI) from dementia. Self‐ or informant reports are most commonly used but can be biased and may not reflect actual functional ability. Alternatives include performance‐based assessments, such as the Sydney Test of Activities of daily living in Memory disorders (STAM). The aim of this study is to develop, and validate, a new computerised diagnostic tool (C‐STAM) to assess functional ability that can be administered remotely to increase accessibility. The C‐STAM will realistically simulate everyday activities to assess functional performance.MethodThe C‐STAM is being developed by a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, old age psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and computer scientists. A Delphi study with 31 international experts was conducted to select and refine suitable tasks. An additional step is consultation with consumers (i.e., older people with and without cognitive impairment) and caregivers who have an active role in shaping the C‐STAM. A pilot study with 30 people aged 60+ with normal cognition, MCI, and dementia plus their informants will assess feasibility and user‐experience. After adjustments based on the pilot study, we will conduct a validation study with 180 participants and their informants.ResultThe Delphi study resulted in nine C‐STAM tasks, addressing the domains of communication, shopping, dressing, community mobility, handling finances, managing medications, and memory. Feasibility and acceptability of these tasks will be confirmed through pilot testing and the validation study. We will develop an automated scoring and interpretation guide, age‐ and sex‐specific norms, and clinical cut‐offs to differentiate the three diagnostic groups. Automated data exporting and reporting will be useful for clinical referrals and in research and will facilitate interpretation and communication of results across different clinical settings.ConclusionThe C‐STAM will facilitate early diagnosis of dementia and MCI and will enable a better understanding of disease progression by monitoring functional ability in a time‐ and resource‐efficient way. Results will be used to inform service development to better meet the needs of people with dementia for access to appropriate assessments of functional performance. The C‐STAM will be freely available for use by clinicians and in research.

Trusted infrastructure needs DINIvolution – the DINI certificate for Open Access publishing services

Research information infrastructure services require transparent criteria and guidelines to be considered trustworthy, i.e. sustainable, interoperable and ready for future challenges. The DINI Certificate for Open Access Publication Services (an English version is currently in preparation) supports these requirements. The community-developed, noncommercial certificate paves the way for open scholarly communication and supports the prerequisites for the free availability of scholarly information as an essential element of future-oriented research-related services. Launched in 2004 and now in its 7th revised version, the DINI certificate has undergone dozens of successful certification processes, and is still unique and can be considered a de facto standard for publishing services, at least in Germany, and a role model for other countries. It is therefore recommended as a guide for publication services by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The DINI Certificate is managed by a team of information experts from research libraries, research organisations and software developers who are organised in the “Electronic Publishing” working group of DINI e.V. DINI or the German Initiative for Networked Information (Deutsche Initiative für Netzwerkinformation) promotes the development of interoperable open and trustworthy information infrastructures and services at research institutions.The DINI Certificate is based on an elaborate set of criteria that takes into account international standards and reflects the current state of technical, organisational and editorial requirements. For certified institutions, the DINI certificate provides a quasiguarantee that their service complies with the requirements of open science and will continue to do so. For others, it provides guidance on implementing a state-of-the-art service. Feedback from the interested community is collected through an open call for comments and taken into account in the revision processes.In the latest certificate (2022), the focus is on supporting users as authors and recipients, the requirements of open science, the sustainability of the service infrastructure, and the desired internationalisation. As a first step towards internationalisation, the certificate has been extended to include the specific requirements for certification of Austrian publication services. Complementary tools and measurements support the effectiveness of the certificate.This presentation will highlight the “DINIverse” − the DINI Certificate and its complementary tools − as a central instrument and inspiration for establishing and maintaining trustworthy Open Access publishing services. In three chapters it will give a brief overview of the origin of the certificate and the continuous adoption of new established requirements as essential parts of the “DINIvolution”, the related workflows, the benefits for users as well as the related services and projects: e.g. supporting tools like the DINI OAI validator, a dynamic overview of publishing services from Germanspeaking countries developed in cooperation with BASE - Bielefeld Academic Search Engine as well as a specialised vocabulary to support compliance with international standards.

Moving Forward With Telehealth in Cancer Rehabilitation: Patient Perspectives From a Mixed Methods Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the use of telehealth in cancer care and highlighted the potential of telehealth as a means of delivering the much-needed rehabilitation services for patients living with the side effects of cancer and its treatments. This mixed methods study aims to explore patients' experiences of telehealth and their preferences regarding the use of telehealth for cancer rehabilitation to inform service development. The study was completed in 2 phases from October 2020 to November 2021. In phase 1, an anonymous survey (web- and paper-based) exploring the need, benefits, barriers, facilitators, and preferences for telehealth cancer rehabilitation was distributed to survivors of cancer in Ireland. In phase 2, survivors of cancer were invited to participate in semistructured interviews exploring their experiences of telehealth and its role in cancer rehabilitation. Interviews were conducted via telephone or video call following an interview guide informed by the results of the survey and transcribed verbatim, and reflexive thematic analysis was performed using a qualitative descriptive approach. A total of 48 valid responses were received. The respondents were at a median of 26 (range 3-256) months after diagnosis, and 23 (48%) of the 48 participants had completed treatment. Of the 48 respondents, 31 (65%) reported using telehealth since the start of the pandemic, 15 (31%) reported having experience with web-based cancer rehabilitation, and 43 (90%) reported a willingness for web-based cancer rehabilitation. A total of 26 (54%) of the 48 respondents reported that their views on telehealth had changed positively since the start of the pandemic. Semistructured interviews were held with 18 survivors of cancer. The mean age of the participants was 58.9 (SD 8.24) years, 56% (10/18) of the participants were female, and 44% (8/18) of the participants were male. Reflexive thematic analysis identified 5 key themes: telehealth improves accessibility to cancer rehabilitation for some but is a barrier for others, lived experiences of the benefits of telehealth in survivorship, the value of in-person health care, telehealth in cancer care and COVID-19 (from novelty to normality), and the future of telehealth in cancer rehabilitation. Telehealth is broadly welcomed as a mode of cancer rehabilitation for patients living with and beyond cancer in Ireland. However, issues regarding accessibility and the importance of in-person care must be acknowledged. Factors of convenience, time savings, and cost savings indicate that telehealth interventions are a desirable patient-centered method of delivering care when performed in suitable clinical contexts and with appropriate populations.

Forty years of soil research funded by the European Commission: Trends and future. A systematic review of research projects

AbstractThe European Green Deal with its high ambition has set the European Union (EU) on a promising path towards greater soil protection. The EU Soil Strategy 2030, the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Zero Pollution, the Nature Restoration Law and the European Climate Law, among others, include actions to protect our soils. Research and Innovation (R&I) will play a key role in developing new knowledge and tools enabling the transition to healthy soils. The main aim of this paper is to analyse past and near‐future trends in EU's funding for R&I on soil‐related issues. For this purpose, a review of EU‐funded soil projects was conducted based on the data available in the Community Research and Development Information Service and the official portal for European data. Our analysis shows that over the past 40 years, the EU has invested significantly in developing integrated knowledge about the relationships between soil functions and ecosystem services and how human‐induced pressures affect soil health. Following the adoption of the EU Soil Thematic Strategy in 2006, there was an increase in research funding for soil‐related research. Furthermore, our analysis also illustrates an interesting interplay of permanent and changing soil themes. The Horizon Europe Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’, which aims to establish a network of 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils and safeguard human and planetary health by 2030, provides a further incentive for soil research. Together with the EU Soil Strategy 2030 and the new proposal for a Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience (Soil Monitoring Law), and the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO), the three instruments set up the political framework, concrete measures, and a monitoring system needed for the protection, restoration and sustainable use of soils.

Research information service development plan based on an analysis of the digital scholarship lifecycle experience of humanities scholars in Korea: a qualitative study

Purpose: Given the impact of information technologies, the research environment for humanities scholars is transforming into digital scholarship. This study presents a foundational investigation for developing digital scholarship (DS) research support services. It also proposes a plan for sustainable information services through examining the current status of DS in Korea, as well as accessing, processing, implementing, disseminating, and preserving interdisciplinary digital data.Methods: Qualitative interview data were collected from September 7 to 11, 2020. The interviews were conducted with scholars at the research director level who had participated in the DS research project in Korea. Data were coded using Nvivo 14, and cross-analysis was performed among researchers to extract central nodes and derive service elements.Results: This study divided DS into five stages: research plan, research implementation, publishing results, dissemination of research results, and preservation and reuse. This paper also presents the library DS information services required for each stage. The characteristic features of the DS research cycle are the importance of collaboration, converting analog resources to data, data modeling and technical support for the analysis process, humanities data curation, drafting a research data management plan, and international collaboration.Conclusion: Libraries should develop services based on open science and data management plan policies. Examples include a DS project liaison service, data management, datafication, digital publication repositories, a digital preservation plan, and a web archiving service. Data sharing for humanities research resources made possible through international collaboration will contribute to the expansion of new digital culture research.

Dementia care coordinator service in Kent and Medway: a realist evaluation protocol.

Dementia care is a key priority for both NHS England and the UK government. National guidelines highlight the importance of care coordination to address the challenges people living with dementia and their carers can encounter when trying to access the health and care system. To counter these challenges, Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board (ICB) have recently implemented a proactive dementia care coordinator (DCC) service to support people with dementia and their carers from pre-diagnosis to end-of-life care. To understand how the DCC service works (or does not work), for whom, and in what circumstances. The findings will inform service development and future investment decisions. This study will use a realist approach to evaluate the DCC service in Kent and Medway ICB, south-east England, which has a population of 1.9 million, comprising 42 primary care networks (PCNs; groups of general practices) each having a DCC. An initial programme theory will be developed from existing literature, and in collaboration with stakeholders. Mixed methods, including questionnaires to DCCs, service provider metrics, and qualitative interviews, will be used to collect data on service provider and service user experiences. Interpretive comparative analysis and narrative synthesis, including evaluation of service costs against outcomes, will produce a refined final programme theory. The results from this project will produce evidence-based recommendations to help improve service delivery and possible service expansion. This protocol describes a realist evaluation designed to investigate the recently implemented DCC service in Kent and Medway ICB.

Alpha NSW: What would it take to create a state-wide paediatric population-level learning health system?

The health and well-being of children in the first 2000 days has a lasting effect on educational achievement and long-term chronic disease in later life. However, the lack of integration between high-quality data, analytic capacity and timely health improvement initiatives means practitioners, service leaders and policymakers cannot use data effectively to plan and evaluate early intervention services and monitor high-level health outcomes. Our exploratory study aimed to develop an in-depth understanding of the system and clinical requirements of a state-wide paediatric learning health system (LHS) that uses routinely collected data to not only identify where the inequities and variation in care are, but also to also inform service development and delivery where it is needed most. Our approach included reviewing exemplars of how administrative data are used in Australia; consulting with clinical, policy and data stakeholders to determine their needs for a child health LHS; mapping the existing data points collected across the first 2000 days of a child's life and geospatially locating patterns of key indicators for child health needs. Our study identified the indicators that are available and accessible to inform service delivery and demonstrated the potential of using routinely collected administrative data to identify the gap between health needs and service availability. We recommend improving data collection, accessibility and integration to establish a state-wide LHS, whereby there is a streamlined process for data cleaning, analysis and visualisation to help identify populations in need in a timely manner.
