Eco-innovative development of industrial ecosystems based on the quintuple helix

This article explores how eco-innovation practices are integrated into different industrial ecosystems in different national and regional contexts, and the role of the quintuple helix model in this integration. The research examines the collaborative interaction of academia, industry, government, civil society, and the natural environment in fostering an integrated eco-innovation ecosystem. The findings underscore the central role of the Quintuple Helix framework in effectively managing eco-innovation, suggesting a comprehensive approach that integrates environmental and societal concerns into a dynamic system for sustainable progress. The study shows that an ecosystem-based approach, underpinned by the quintuple helix, facilitates the rapid exchange of knowledge and resources essential to overcoming eco-innovation challenges, such as high R&D expenditures and the complex integration of sustainable technologies. The quintuple helix model emerges as a strategic imperative for concerted action to achieve eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness. The study employs an innovative methodological framework based on Quintuple Helix projections using the Eco-Innovation Index (Eco-IS) and highlights significant trends in the roles of academia, industry, government, civil society, and the natural environment in eco-innovation, with a particular focus on their contributions to eco-innovation leaders, average performers, and catching-up groups. The article describes the different roles and interdependencies of the actors within the ecosystem and urges a coherent, networked strategy for managing eco-innovation, which is crucial for sustainable and responsible growth. Acknowledging the issue of externalities that complicate eco-innovation management, the article posits that the quintuple helix framework can better address these challenges by enabling shared R&D investments and broad diffusion of innovations. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable industrial development by proposing the quintuple helix as a transformative model for improving eco-innovation performance and fostering a culture of sustainability.

Knowledge spillovers along the sustainable supply chain of China's listed companies: The role of long-term orientation

A new industrial development paradigm, the Fifth Industrial Revolution or ‘Industry 5.0’ is expected to humanise green technological innovation (GTI), social resilience, and sustainable development of industrial ecosystems. Emphasising the supplier-customer interaction, ‘Industry 5.0’ is technological revolution, which is a value-driven initiative that drives knowledge spillovers along the sustainable supply chain (SSC). In this context, enterprises are incorporating more GTI activities into their partners’ SSC strategies. This study employs samples of China's A-share listed companies covering the period from 2010 to 2021 to examine the spillover effects between customers’ GTI and suppliers total factor productivity (TFP). Both GTI and TFP indicators are important representations of ‘Industry 5.0’, with our major concerning on the enhancement of supplier's long-term orientation (LTO). We calculated TFP by the Olley-Pakes and Levinsohn-Petrin methods, dividing GTI indicators into three levels: substantial green technological innovation (SGTI), non-substantial green technological innovation (NGTI), and overall green technological innovation (OGTI). Our empirical results show that 1) Customer's GTI contributes to supplier's TFP, and supplier's LTO including environmental, social & governance (ESG) performance, and R&D input can strengthen this beneficial link; 2) customer's NGTI represents a significant differentiation in comparison with SGTI, where R&D investment weakens the positive relationship between customer's NGTI and supplier's TFP; 3) heterogeneity analysis indicates that the spillovers of customer's GTI on supplier's TFP are more pronounced among state-owned enterprises, high-tech enterprises, and non-polluting enterprises. Notably, the connectedness demonstrates dynamic patterns through 2SLS and GMM regressions, highlighting the importance of enterprises' SSC and LTO being the shock transmitters to their TFP. Our study is prone to benefit lawmakers, regulators, and firm executives responsible for analysing and assessing the SSC, providing more policy implications with future prospects for sustainable transformation in the upcoming ‘Industry 5.0’ era.

From ESG to EICSG (Environment, Intelligent, Cyber, Social, Governance) strategic management in Industry 5.0

The article develops strategic recommendations for improving the management practices of integrating modern scientific achievements into the processes of sustainable development of industrial ecosystems, adapted to the requirements and challenges of Industry 5.0. The concept of industrial EICSG-ecosystem in the context of Industry 5.0 is developed, combining elements of environmental (E - environmental), intellectual (I - intelligent), cyber-social (CS - cyber-social) and governance (G - governance) resilience. The conceptual components of effective development of industrial EICSG ecosystems, which form the organisational basis of Industry 5.0, are proposed. The prerequisites of strategic management of the industrial EICSG ecosystem of Industry 5.0 are defined.

The relevance of research is due to the low-level penetration of the closed-loop economy in the world tending to decline: From 9.1% in 2018 to 8.6% in 2020. In order to keep our world liveable and prosperous for current and future generations, global circularity must be doubled to 17%. The industrial ecosystems of the Russian Federation place the great importance on the global sustainability agenda and ESG transformation. However, this fact does not yet allow to overcome the main problems on the way of development of industrial ecosystems in the closed-loop economy of the RF - the galloping growth of production and consumption waste, as well as the trend of anti-decoupling, characteristic of the linear, highly material-intensive commodity-heavy economic model, one of the most inert and unstable. The aim of the study is to substantiate the theoretical concept of effective sustainable ESG development of industrial ecosystems in the closed-loop economy. The dialectical approach is fundamental in the research process, in addition to which we used the systemic, complex, interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, project, value, holistic approaches and the whole complex of methods (comparative analysis, semantic analysis, historical method, method of differentiation of taxonomic features, etc.). The analysis of the narrative of closed-loop economy development on the basis of the historical method and the comparative analysis of the closed-loop economy concepts made it possible to present the closed-loop economy as an umbrella term for a multitude of co-evolving concepts. Identification of the semantic core of the existing definitions of closed-loop economy based on broad and narrow specialized approaches has allowed to represent the author’s vision of the essence of the closed-loop economy. The identification of the primary causes of the need for a closed-loop economy, principles, approaches, factors, strategies at three levels, circular business models, effects on the stages of the chain of circular value creation based on cross-sectoral and holistic approaches, taxon differentiation method based on taxonomic features allowed to identify the essential features of the closed-loop economy in industry and develop the concept of effective sustainable development of industrial ecosystems in the closed-loop economy. The direction of further research is to form a methodology of strategic management of effective sustainable ESG development of industrial ecosystems in a closed-loop economy.

Research on a Coordination Evaluation and Prediction Model of Water Use and Industrial Ecosystem Development.

Coordinating the relationship between water use and industrial ecosystem development is the key to ensuring high-quality and sustainable development of the industrial economy. In this paper, a model was proposed for evaluating and predicting the coordination between water use and industrial ecosystem development. First, aiming at the coordination of water use and industrial ecosystem development, this paper determined 15 indicators from the aspects of water demand and supply, water conservation and environmental protection, industrial sustainable development, input and output, and industrial development status. The combination weighting method based on game theory was used to determine the weight of the evaluation index. Then, the coordination evaluation model called the back propagation neural network (BP)-coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) and the coordination prediction model called gray models (GM)-BP-CCDM were established. Finally, the model was applied to the coordination evaluation and prediction of water use and industrial ecosystem development in the Hebei Province, China. The results show that the coordination degree of cities in the Hebei Province is moderate. Therefore, based on the research results, some scientific and reasonable suggestions for water resources utilization and industrial ecosystem development were put forward.

Overcoming data gaps for an efficient circular economy: A case study on the battery materials ecosystem

Data exchange and utilization are considered fundamental for the efficient development of industrial ecosystems. However, there are significant data gaps that currently prevent the implementation of circular economy models in practice. The present work is a first attempt to identify the sources of such barriers, using the battery materials industrial ecosystem in Finland as case study. A visual grounded theory model was created to formally analyze the collected interview answers from representatives of companies along the value chain. In summary, it was found that: i) companies gather information relevant for other stakeholders; ii) there are no incentives to openly share data, which is considered a valuable asset; iii) actors lack clarity on which data is relevant at a system-level; and iv) there is no consensus on which format can data be shared to efficiently promote circular economy strategies. To address the identified barriers, it is hereby proposed for the first time that parametrization is a strategy to promote data exchange between stakeholders. As an illustrative example, statistical entropy is presented as a mean to exchange data of battery material composition. Properly designed parameters could be used to codify relevant data without a negative impact on the confidentiality of companies, while at the same time providing clarity of purpose for the circular economy. Thus, this article introduces a novel perspective for the implementation of bottom-up data exchange practices in industry.

The coronavirus pandemic caused significant damage to the economy of the regions. The comprehension of the impact of pandemic on industrial development of the territory is the goal of many scientific studies. The purpose of this article is to identify trends in the development of certain industrial sectors in the South of Russia and to suggest managerial measures arising from the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was founded on monitoring data from the Federal Service for State Statistics of Russia. The object of the research was the old industrial regions in the South of Russia. During the study, it was determined that at the beginning of the pandemic, the economy of the regions under analysis was characterized by a low potential for innovative development and a low level of return on assets. With a high demand for digital technologies, they have become most widespread in the automation of internal business processes of enterprises. The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on individual sectors of industry turned out to be multidirectional. The most affected industrial sector was oil production. The economic growth was demonstrated by enterprises of agricultural engineering, metallurgy and a number of others. It is shown that the recovery of industrial production is complicated by a low level of development of its material and technical basis; high import dependence of production on components, raw materials, spare parts; high competition from foreign market players; shortage of human capital. It is concluded that industrial ecosystem structures are the drivers of economic growth in the conditions of the pandemic. Management recommendations which are aimed at the development of industrial ecosystems are provided. They are focused on the environmental component of industrial production, development of cooperative business interactions to maintain the sustainability of the supply chain, digitalization of business processes with the simultaneous development of smart competencies of personnel, import substitution production and focus on the domestic market.

Industrial ecosystem and revitalization of brownfields

The creation of climate-neutral industrial ecosystems based on digital leadership determines the movement of advanced countries towards competitiveness on the global stage. Industrial ecosystems of most regions of Ukraine are characterized by a low technological level of key industries and lack of organizational routines that can ensure their transition to a higher technological and resource-efficient level. The problem of forming a modern policy in the field of revitalization of abandoned areas of former industrial use (brownfields), in particular in the field of industrial waste processing, needs an urgent solution. The article is aimed at highlighting the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of creating a new industrial path through the revitalization of brownfields in underdeveloped industrial ecosystems on the example of old industrial mining regions. The paper proposes the use of a bricolage approach to create a new path of development of old industrial mining regions. This approach focuses not on the breakthrough development of the new industry, which is almost impossible in the conditions of insufficient development of industrial ecosystems, but on the gradual process of strategic cooperation of many participants (local and non-local enterprises, research institutes, local authorities, community, national and regional authorities, other stakeholders), coordination and pooling of resources at different levels, which will eventually have to evolve together, thus leading to a favorable institutional environment for the new industry. The establishment of an enterprises for the processing of coal preparation within the framework of the brownfield revitalization project is a kind of a kludge, the temporary adaptation of the community to the complex socio-economic and environmental situation, which is a consequence of the cessation of intensive coal mining, which will make it possible to create new routines of business behavior of institutions and citizens, the best of which in the process of evolutionary selection will be able to adapt to the new challenges of global technological transformations in industry and ecology. The practical implementation of the given approach is primarily represented in the creation of special institutions that are alternatives to the institutional traps of industrial development on the principles of the circular economy and relate to the introduction of more strict measures when implementing European waste management standards in national legislation and additional taxes that force enterprises to recycle waste; emergence of special enterprises (scavengers and decomposers) that use new effective disposal measures to restore and further use brownfields; creation of special community development corporations that promote economic development and environmental sustainability of the territory and ensure broad community participation in the creation of initiatives and decision-making; use of opportunities for Ukrainian integration in the field of innovation, science and education under the Association Agreement signed with the European Union in order to make effective decisions on the revitalization of brownfields.

An ecosystem approach to managing innovative development in industry

Despite relatively high innovation expenditures, innovative performance of the Russian industry is far behind the developed countries. This is largely due to the lack of adequate tools for choosing appropriate managerial impacts to exert on the innovative potential of industry. The study aims to develop methods for predicting the effects of managerial impacts on the innovative development of industrial ecosystems and test them on the case of the Russian water industry. Methodological basis of the research comprises the theory of industrial development, and ecosystem approach. The research method is cognitive modelling of managerial impacts on the development of innovation ecosystem of the water industry. The calculations are performed using the authors’ programme Cognitive Modeling Complex Systems. The researchers develop a cognitive map, which allows forecasting the effects of managerial impacts that regulate inter actions between the ecosystem participants. The suggested tools help to choose rational forms of partner relationships, and as a result, increase the efficiency of the functional cycle of the innovation process management. Both companies and government bodies can apply the results of the study to create scenarios and strategies of innovative development in industry.

Methodology for sustainable development of industrial ecosystems

The article contains methodological aspects of sustainable development of industrial ecosystems. The relevance of the study is confirmed by the fact that the promotion of inclusive and sustainable industry and further investment in physical infrastructure, innovation and research are essential for long-term economic development. It has been concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic has such destabilizing consequences that it threatens to halt or even reverse progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. However, a fairly rapid recovery of industry after coping with the coronavirus pandemic is possible, unlike the economy as a whole, which will require a much longer recovery period. The article proposes the architecture of the methodology for the sustainable development of industrial ecosystems, which includes five levels (paradigm, meta-level, ontology, meanings and directly ecosystem level). The paradigm in the study is the super task, the mental model of the transition to a new economy, to a new way of industrial production, to a new thinking. The meta-level of methodology is represented by the principles of sustainable development of industrial ecosystems, theoretical provisions (hypotheses, fundamental approaches, basic theories, laws of development). At the ontological level, the methodology for the sustainable development of industrial ecosystems uses digital twins, basic organizational and managerial mechanisms (procedures, tools, structures). The semantic level includes a conceptual apparatus (glossary), as well as applied theories and concepts of the sustainable development of industrial ecosystems. The ecosystem level of the methodology for sustainable development of industrial ecosystems combines the concepts of economic, ecological and natural-biological systems. The sustainable development of the industrial ecosystem is proposed to be managed at six levels (methodological, ideological, conceptual, modelling, application and technology). The conclusion concluded that an ecosystem-based economic model achieves the highest production efficiency compared to a traditional economy model and a platform-based digital model.

Industrial ecosystems of the world: assessment of ecological development

Sustainable development has become the mainstream of the global economy in recent years. It is focused on creating the mechanisms to ensure climate-neutral industrial growth through the use of advanced digital production technologies. Under the influence of modern technologies, the processes of formation and further development of industrial ecosystems are intensifying, which should be studied in ecological and technological contexts. The new climate agenda makes the determining of new perspectives and problems of industrial ecosystem development from the standpoint of a national industry increasingly relevant. The article presents an empirical analysis of the development of industrial ecosystems in 58 countries within two groups - countries with developed industry and countries with developing industry, based on the World Bank classification of countries and economies by level of industrialization. The methodological approach to assessing the environmental friendliness of industrial ecosystems has been improved by identifying the relationship between gross value added in industry and the efficiency of CO2 emissions in creating value in the manufacturing sector, the use of which allows establishing significant differences in achieving the goals of sustainable development between different countries in terms of industrial and technological development. The results of the study confirm the thesis on the active use of modern technologies in the field of environmental impact in countries with developed industries on the way to greater compliance of their industrial ecosystems with the principles of biological ones. Key issues are outlined and Ukraine's prospects for industrial growth based on sustainable development, along with a significant improvement in production technologies, are identified.

Sustainability Assessment Based on Weighing Method of Combined Subjective-objective——Case of Shaanxi Province in Northwestern China

Based on the principle of the triple bottom line (economy, society and environment), considering about energy export region of Shaanxi actual situation, this paper constructed a comprehensive assessment for sustainability of industrial ecosystem (SIE) by weighing method of combined subjective-objective (CSO) and based on the data from 2008 to 2018. The research results indicated that the sustainable development of industrial ecosystem continues to improve and the policy guidance plays a significant role in this process. Many policy measures had characteristic of Shaanxi, such as the strategies of energy industry-- stable production and quality improvement, structural optimization of non-energy industry and the leading role of major project.

Industrial ecosystems and digitalization in the context of sustainable development

The digital revolution and extended use of modern digital technologies define the intensification of formation processes and further development of industrial ecosystems as stable geographically established networks of interconnected diverse enterprises and institutions, that are based on certain manufacturing technologies. At the same time, the location of industrial ecosystems is changed, which manifests itself in contradictory processes of reshoring and nearshoring, deepening their specialization, as the result of which in various regions of the world existing industrial ecosystems are transforming and new ones with different environmental influence are forming. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to educe current peculiarities of their evolution in terms of digitalization in the context of sustainable development. Every industrial ecosystem is unique, but it also has some certain similarities with other ecosystems, giving objective reasons for distinguishing their characteristic types. This study carries out the grouping of national economies (68 countries) by the size of industrial ecosystems (value added), their labor intensiveness, knowledge intensiveness and environmental friendliness (CO2 emissions). According to results of the cluster analysis, it is found that the absolute leadership by qualitative characteristics, primarily in terms of labor productivity and R&D costs, belongs to industrial ecosystems of advanced countries in Europe, Asia-Pacific region and the United States. With regard to Ukraine, its industrial ecosystem is classified to the cluster of countries that are "catching up" and characterized by worse indicators, including in the framework of sustainable development. To assess the environmental friendliness of industrial ecosystems, it is suggested to use the indicator of a normalized area of an ecological footprint that characterizes its size, which accrues to consumption of 1 ton of coal. Calculations of this indicator show that the increase of world coal consumption in recent decades is followed by a decrease of a normalized area of the ecological footprint as a result of progress in the development of "clean" manufacturing technologies and consumption of this energy source. However, the situation is different in various clusters of industrial ecosystems. With the difference of volume of GDP per capita, the normalized ecological footprint of developing countries is almost 3 times higher than in advanced ones. Namely, the life support in industrial ecosystems of developing countries (including Ukraine) per 1 dollar of income is associated with a significantly higher normalized ecological footprint. The Ukrainian national industrial ecosystem is currently characterized by the low technical and technological level of production and high normalized coal consumption with corresponding negative consequences for the environment. To ensure its transition to a sustainable development trajectory, it is necessary to create institutions that would stimulate a cyclical model of industrial behavior at the state level, as well as the development and dissemination of new digital technologies in industrial production and energy sector that can reduce the ecological footprint.

Synergistic Evaluation and Constraint Factor Analysis on Urban Industrial Ecosystems of Traditional Industrial Area in China

Industrial ecology is an advanced form and ideal model of modern industrial development, in which the industrial ecosystem is the core. Based on the PSR model, this paper builds a comprehensive evaluation index system for urban industrial ecosystem development and selects 14 prefecture-level cities in Liaoning Province of the traditional industrial area in Northeastern China as cases to calculate the development level of its industrial ecosystem during 2000–2018 using an improved Topsis method and then to conduct a spatial visualization analysis. Finally, based on the “stress-state-response” subsystem, this paper diagnoses the constraints for industrial ecosystem development, which can provide a reference basis for decision-making in industrial ecology of traditional industrial area represented by those in Northeast China. The results show the following: (1) From 2000 to 2018, the industrial ecology of the 14 cities in Liaoning Province was at a medium level. Except for Shenyang and Dalian with the rapid development, the difference of industrial ecosystem development for other cities was relatively small. (2) From 2000 to 2018, the industrial ecosystem development of each city was in a status of “either increasing, or decreasing, or fluctuating,” which generally raised first and then decreased. Regarding spatial difference, the development exhibited a “center-periphery” pattern, with Shenyang and Dalian as the “dual-core” that were increasingly strengthened with significantly high-level industrial ecology. (3) At system level, PSR constraint grades for the industrial ecosystem development in the 14 cities of Liaoning Province were different. Constraint grades in the pressure subsystem, the state subsystem, and the response subsystem for the industrial ecosystem of Liaoning were 45.73%, 20.01%, and 34.34%, respectively, indicating that the lack of human response to the ecological environment and the pressure of human activities on the ecological environment during the industrial economy development were the main constraints affecting the process of industrial ecology in these cities. (4) Due to the differences in geographical environments, economic bases, industrial structures, and local development contexts, the major constraint factors of industrial ecosystem development in different cities are significantly different and complicated; however, there are five factors that are generally considered as major constraint factors in all cities, i.e., regional GDP, number of labor force employed in the secondary industrial sector, gross investment in fixed assets, amount of industrial sulfur dioxide removal, and production value from “three-wastes” comprehensive utilization. At last, this paper puts forward some recommendations and suggestions for providing scientific support for industrial ecosystem construction in the traditional industrial area of Northeastern China.

The emergence of regional industrial ecosystem niches: A conceptual framework and a case study

The objective of this paper is to understand how industrial symbiosis initiatives can contribute to the emergence of regional industrial ecosystems for sustainability transitions of local industrial production systems. We offer a conceptual framework that integrates industrial ecology literature and strategic niche management perspective from the sustainability transitions research field. The framework provides a conceptual foundation for analysing the individual industrial symbiosis initiatives and their aggregated contribution to the emergence of regional industrial ecosystems. Analytically, we conceptualise two different heuristic levels – the local industrial symbiosis experiments level and the regional industrial ecosystems niche level – which are interlinked through three niche processes. We represent the merits of our conceptualisation through a case study in an empirical setting where we selected a highly industrialised and rarely explored region; namely, the Autonomous Region of Catalonia in Spain. We identify and analyse eight industrial symbiosis initiatives that evolved during 18 years in the region. In the light of our conceptual framework, the results show that interlinked initiatives from the region have been gradually adding up to emerging regional industrial ecosystems. However, the region is still missing a broad regional network with articulated expectations and visions and shared cognitive, formal and normative rules. If emerging regional network provides support and protection for new initiatives, a regional culture change can be realised to achieve sustainability transition of local industrial production systems employing closed industrial production loops. The theoretical contribution of this paper is that we combine two different research streams that have not often learned from each other and we also develop a novel conceptual approach for ex-post evaluation of regional industrial ecosystem development. Moreover, our conceptual framework can be extended as a prescriptive management tool for planning and implementation of industrial symbiosis initiatives in Catalonia as well as in other regions.

Strategic levers of port authorities for industrial ecosystem development

Major ports such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, Houston and Singapore’s Jurong Port host large industrial complexes of (petro)chemical and other energy-intensive process industry firms. Port authorities face the challenge to contribute to both greater international competitiveness and better environmental performance of these complexes. The development of industrial ecosystems, in which firms located in port areas use one another’s residual energy and chemical effluents as input for their own production process, appears to be a promising strategic response to this challenge. In this article, we contribute to port research by examining how port authorities can foster this development within their port-industrial complex. We present a case study of the Port of Rotterdam to empirically capture how the Port of Rotterdam Authority has done so in the last decade by strategically making use of two generic types of policy instruments: (i) investments in physical and knowledge infrastructure and (ii) land allocation. On the basis of the case study and previous literature, we derive a set of strategic levers of port authorities to foster industrial ecosystem development. We discuss implications and challenges for port authorities.

Development of industrial ecosystem is one of the most popular methods being implemented in the industrial world for sustainable development. Eco-industrial Park (EIP) provides a specific practice for the medium level of industrial ecosystem and serves as an effective mode to achieve sustainable development of economy, society and environment in China. In recent years, EIP has been developed very fast in China. Up to September, 2012, there are 45 national EIPs authorized by Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology. Most of these EIPs are national economic and technical development zone and national high-tech industrial development zone. These development zones are important carriers of Chinese urbanization process. Therefore, the dynamic processes of Chinese EIPs are quite different from other countries, where the functions of EIPs in China is not only industrial production, but a Social-Economic-Natural Complex function, and its final evaluation shape of EIPs will be eco-cities.In this paper, we developed a special definition of complex eco-efficiency based on SENCE theory to measure the development status of Chinese EIPs. The accurate measurement of the complex eco-efficiency of EIP industrial eco-system in China will help to understand the overall operation conditionsand the importance of various factors on the improvement of the complex eco-efficiency, which is convenient for setting up feedback mechanism timely and promoting the comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development of EIPs. We first discussed the structure, functions and processes of complex industrial ecosystem briefly, then the development of evaluation indicator system in detail. An evaluation indicator system for complex eco-efficiency of EIP on a frame of structure-function-process was developed based on the theoretical review. The indicator system was divided into five layers and three sub-groups. There were totally 25 technological indicators among which 23 were quantitative, 2 were qualitative. 6 structural indicators, 15 functional indicators and 4 process indicators were included in three sub-groups. Zhengzhou national economic and technical development zone was selected for case study to explain how to collect data and information on EIP level and how to make a systematic assessment of these indicators. The focus of this paper was to explain that these indicators were easily accessible and useful.In 2006, the Ministry of Environmental Protection issued a series of national standards for EIPs. Although they divided EIPs into sector-specific EIPs, sector-integrate EIPs and venous industry based EIPs, the indicators of these three types are similar. Except for economic development indictors, most of these indicators are related to environmental pollution control and environmental management. These indicators are useful on factory level of EIPs, but not useful when we take EIP as a whole ecosystem. In this paper, we tried to develop indicators which are more ecologically and systematically, based on our understanding of EIPs as a complex ecosystem and a special evolution process of eco-cities. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Advanced Maintenance Services for Promoting Sustainability

Ecology and industry, which have been many times considered as antagonists, are now associated together in the sustainability concept to support the three social / economic / environment pillars. In that way, industrial enterprises and more precisely manufacturing ones seek to integrate environment into their strategy by conducting an innovative rationalization of the production as promoted by industrial ecology and circular economy paradigms. This rationalization is favoring the evolution from product to a Product-Service Systems approach (PSS). The continuity of these services is mainly carried out by the maintenance which is no longer an aftermarket service needed for product (system) functionality but rather an inherent service function of the product (system). Thus this paper aims to investigate the role of maintenance to contribute to the development of these paradigms. It is based first on describing the main features of industrial ecology/circular economy transposing the nature concepts to industrial system. It leads to define key principles and levers to be addressed for the development of industrial ecosystems. Then maintenance activity is globally presented allowing, in a second step, to place maintenance services already existing in line with some of these principles and levers (ex. green maintenance), but also to explore advanced maintenance services more able to support promotion of industrial ecosystem by covering others principles and levers. These advanced services can be built from conventional maintenance processes but integrating sustainability goal (ex. prognostics of energy efficiency) or from innovative processes (ex. regenerative management). Finally scientific issues related to these advanced maintenance services are underlining and should concretize future research directions for researchers/practitioners working on maintenance field.

Enabling the 2.5D Integration

3D IC is the viable revolutionary technology that will enable system-level integration, miniaturization, optimal power management, increased data bandwidth, and eventually reduced system cost. Like any breakthrough technologies, it faces many challenges. Design methodology, integration technology, manufacturing process and new industrial ecosystem are the areas of focus. This paper will discuss these challenges and Altera's 3D integration development effort. 2.5D is an intermediate path to true 3D IC using silicon interposer and TSV (Through-Si-Via) stacking. The 2.5D stacking configuration offers different form factor, interconnect path, and thermal management options than monolithic packages, which could help to reduce system level power and thermal management pressure. It offers silicon level interconnect density, low inductive path and wide IO application. However, it's power delivery system (PDN) could be the bottleneck for the system to perform at the intended bandwidth and speed. Thus, the whole system, IC-Interposer-Package-PCB, must be considered holistically, and trade off study and compensation mechanism development are needed in such complex system level integration. There are many different 2.5D integration manufacturing flows currently under development. They can be categorized into two major flow options: Attaching interposer to substrate first, which can be called CoCoS (Chip on Chip on Substrate); or attaching device silicon to interposer first, which is also called CoWoS (Chip on Wafer on Substrate). The major challenges are in the areas of manufacturing process window and yield, thin wafer handling, testability and overall cost of the integration process. ,). This paper will discuss design consideration, manufacturability analysis, Logic/memory devices and silicon interposer interaction, and thermal management to enable the 2.5D integration. System level characterization and correlation with simulations are performed. The challenge of new supply-customer model and industrial ecosystem development associated with 2.5D integration will also be discussed.

Going beyond the sectoral boundary: a key stage in the development of a regional industrial ecosystem

A regional industrial ecosystem faces the challenge of boundaries, which are barriers to its evolution and development. Crossing various boundaries is necessary in order to achieve extension of industrial ecosystems. This article described and analyzed the case of going beyond the sectoral boundary practice of the Hai Hua industrial ecosystem (HHIE) in China. In this case, the traditional planned economic system of China was the main reason for the existence of the sectoral boundary in HHIE. The sectoral boundary restricted the establishment of potential symbiotic linkages between companies. Going beyond the sectoral boundary was necessary in order to promote industrial ecosystem development. The government played a crucial role in breaking the sectoral boundary. It was “a key stage” in the development of HHIE. Breaking the sectoral boundary was achieved through the approach of establishing a salt-soda combination, i.e., establishing the Hai Hua Group (HHG). From this case, some conclusions on development of industrial ecosystems were drawn.
