What Aspects of Religion and Spirituality Affect the Physical Health of Cancer Patients? A Systematic Review.

In recent years, the literature on the relationship between religion and spirituality (R/S) and the health of cancer patients has been flourishing. Although most studies focus on mental health, many study the physical health of these individuals. In order to summarize the findings of these studies, we reviewed the most recent research on this subject using the PubMed and PsycInfo databases. The objective of this systematic review was to recognize the primary R/S variables studied in research on physical health in cancer contexts. We found that spiritual well-being was the most-researched variable in studies of these characteristics, followed by R/S struggles and other variables such as religious coping; religious commitment or practice; or self-rated R/S. In general, R/S seems to have a positive association with the physical health of cancer patients, although the results are quite heterogeneous, and occasionally there are no relationships or the association is negative. Our results may assist in improving interventions that include spirituality in clinical settings as well as the development of holistic approaches, which may have a positive impact on the quality of life and well-being of cancer patients.

Occurrence of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in streetvended beverages accessible in an industrial zone of Bangladesh

The street-vended fruit beverages are considered as a source of disease causing microorganisms despite their high consumer demand and nutritional value. The study was conducted for the assessment of antibiotic resistance food-borne pathogens in street-vended fruit beverages available in an industrial zone of Bangladesh. A total of 50 samples constituting five different types of street-vended fruit beverages were collected from Gazipur city of Bangladesh. All the samples were examined for total viable microbial count followed by isolation, identification and antibiogram profile of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The total viable microbial count ranged from 2.3 to 8.9 log cfu/ml suggesting a significant bacterial load that exceeds the maximum permitted level of microbial load for freshly extracted fruit juices. Of the 50 samples, 29 (58.0%) were appeared as Staphylococcus aureus positive and 24 (48.0%) samples were contaminated with Escherichia coli. Antibiogram profile revealed Staphylococcus aureus resistance to penicillin (82.8%), amoxicillin (75.9%) and oxacillin (17.2%). The resistance to β-lactam antibiotic like oxacillin indicates the presence of highly pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus which is obviously a potent public health issue. In contrary, Escherichia coli isolates were resistant to amoxicillin (100%) and erythromycin (100%). All the isolates were found highly susceptible to ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. The antibiotic resistance pattern of the isolated organisms could complicate the treatment of food-borne illness in people. Development of holistic approach and their effective application could ensure the hygienic quality of these beverages as well as the health standard of the consumers.

Holistic Approach for Common Adjustment Problems (H.A.C.A.P.) of College Students: An Intervention Program

Adolescence is a very delicate and vulnerable stage in life. It is characterized by various adjustment particularly anxiety and depression. The study focused on adolescent’s ages 17-19 years of age. The objective of this study is to develop Holistic Approach for Common Adjustment Problems (H.A.C.A.P.) Intervention Program of College Students. The researcher used mixed method approach where qualitative is used to validate quantitative results. Three psychological tests were used namely, College Adjustment Scale, Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventory. Phase I is development of Holistic Approach for Common Adjustment Problems Intervention Program (H.A.C.A.P.). Using College Adjustment Scale, the researcher analyzed the result of needs assessment survey for the S.Y 2015-2016 where 25 college students found to have significant difficulties in, family problems, depression and suicidal ideation. The respondents are already dropped so a needs assessment follow up survey was conducted for the S.Y. 2016-2017 and it revealed that anxiety and depression are the most common problems which are above average. Out of 78 college students from CAS referred by the Dean 48 complied and 24 found to have high level of anxiety and depression. This was reduced to 16 were participants in focus group discussion. Thus expert’s validation also revealed that H.A.C.A.P. intervention program is applicable to anxiety and depression. Likewise in the pilot run of the Holistic Approach for Common Adjustment Problems (H.A.C.A.P) shows that there was a significant difference in the pre-test and post- test on anxiety and depression inventory this shows that anxiety and depression decreases. The final composition of H.A.C.A.P. was developed and anchored on Becks’ anxiety and depression theory, Albert Ellis theory, Banduras theory and Jungian’s expressive art theory. Phase 2, testing the efficacy of H.A.C.A.P. Intervention Program. A total of 14 participants were divided into two, 7 for the control group and 7 for the experimental group. The pre-test and post-test shows that anxiety and depression decreases while the control group remains high. It is concluded that H.A.C.A.P is effective to college students with common adjustment problems.
