Mapping Smart Materials’ Literature: An Insight between 1990 and 2022

The field of smart materials (SMs) is an area of great interest in the scientific community and one that is growing considerably from year to year due to the features this field brings to the development of high-performance products and applications. Considering these aspects, researchers choose to contribute to this field, and every year, an increasing number of scientific publications appear in the databases. Based on this consideration, the present paper approaches the domain of SMs from a quantitative perspective by carrying out a bibliometric analysis to provide young researchers with a mapping of the most important aspects, as well as the evolution of the field. The bibliometric analysis was carried out in the time frame 1990–2022 in the Web of Science (WoS) database, finding only selected research and review articles based on the most relevant keywords used in the domain. Based on the large number of results identified (8998 publications), the authors designed a classification of the most important aspects of bibliometric analysis.

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING-ORIENTED STRESS MINIMIZATION TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION WITH CONNECTIVITY

The organic combination of additive manufacturing and topology optimization will greatly promote the development of high-performance products. However, most of the existing researches on design performance and manufacturability based on topology optimization are carried out separately. And, they often focus on traditional stiffness problems and lack the consideration of the most important strength problems in practical engineering. In this paper, an additive manufacturing-oriented topology optimization model for the structural optimization problem that considers strength and manufacturability connectivity collaboratively is established, viz, a structural stress minimization under material volume and connectivity-based scalar field constraints. An effective optimization strategy is introduced to overcome various numerical problems in the solution. The P-norm based global scalar field constraint measure is employed, together with the stability transformation method-based error correction technique to realize the effective control of the local scalar field. The corresponding sensitivity is derived in detail. The rationality and effectiveness of the proposed model and method are demonstrated by typical numerical examples. Optimized results show that the stiffness maximization design considering only the connectivity constraint may not necessarily avoid local high stress concentration, and the design is not necessarily equivalent to the stress minimization connectivity design. Sufficient material allowance and appropriate connectivity constraint boundary conditions are important to improve the performance of the design studied. Moreover, the value of the stress aggregation parameter is not the bigger the better, only a reasonable value can help to obtain a high-performance design. To some extent, the results also demonstrate the necessity and feasibility of considering the strength problem in manufacturing-oriented topology optimization.

Development of natural fibre for environmental and sustainable advancement

The increasing attention on renewable resources for a sustainable environment has led to the expansion in the development of high-performance products made from natural resources. Natural fibres that are diffused in the environment in abundance are economical, making this characteristic a value-added engineering, as they exhibit lower cost and can produce lighter composites, as compared to the existing fibreglass reinforced polymer composites. In this study, the involvement of kenaf fibre in chemical treatment on morphological and mechanical properties of the thermoset polyurethane (PU)-(PUKf) composites was firstly proposed and trialled. The results of chemical treatment on kenaf fibre highlight the improvement on the impact strength although the hardness of kenaf composites is reduced. This is compared with different samples, which are pure thermoset PU and kenaf fibre without chemical treatment. Overall, the developments of natural fibre in engineering and energy sectors could significantly enhance the reduction of solid waste and environmental pollution.

PvT-Behavior of Polymers under Processing Conditions and Implementation in the Process Simulation

The development of high performance products at lowest possible product development-time and costs is the demand of the plastics industry today. A successful use of process simulation to describe the behavior of complex structures and to minimize the technical and economic risks for companies requires application and process-relevant material data.The pvT-behavior of polymers is an essential parameter for process simulations. Especially the dependence of the specific volume of pressure and temperature [1, 2] under process conditions is not mapped to the existing measurement methods.In this study pvT measurements were performed on selected amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers (PP, HDPE, POM, PBT, and ABS) with a Pirouette pvT device, a combination of a dilatometer and Couette rheometer. The specific volume was determined as a function of temperature (25-300°C) and at pressures ranging between 200-1000 bar. On top of that, the influence of the cooling rate was also investigated by pvT measurements performed at cooling rates of 0.1°C/s, 1°C/s and 100°C/s.The coefficients for the 2nd domain Tait pvT-model, which is implemented in the software Autodesk Moldflow, were determined by fitting the experimental pvT data and comparing them with the measured curves. As a result, the semi-crystalline polymers show a shift of the transition temperature to lower temperatures and a reduction in the specific volume in the melt is observed. For validation, in a case study shrinkage results in real were compared with the simulation.

The impact and management of cognitive gap in high performance product development organizations

The close alignment of applied research and development units with manufacturing operational structures can provide excellent opportunities for maintaining robust product pipelines and reducing product development cycle times. Within such an integrated organizational model (IOM), however, lies a potentially disruptive psychological mechanism that can lead to the dissolution of this delicate partnership if it is not handled properly. This mechanism is cognitive gap, which can take several basic forms: first, as differences between the nature and difficulty of the problem at hand and the cognitive resources of the problem solvers tasked with its solution; and second, as differences between the cognitive abilities and approaches of the problem solvers themselves. In this paper, we define and discuss cognitive gap within the context of Kirton's Adaption-Innovation theory, a useful framework for understanding problem solving (and problem solvers) in general. Specific implications (both favourable and potentially destructive) of cognitive gaps for high performance product development organizations are discussed, and suggestions for their effective management are offered.

Determination of the Deposition Characteristics and Luminance Decay Mechanisms in OLED and their Implications in Reliability Assessment

OLED has many advantages such as possibility to make micro size, tiny driving power, and fast response time with high resolution. However, significant commercial level problems are being recognized resulting from the damage of emitting layer, degradation of organic layers, and generation of dark spot. It is therefore necessary to overcome the problems for the development of high performance products. Deposition characteristic associated with the materials failure in OLED has been determined, firstly, by means of the analysis of the surface morphology and roughness of thin film. Physical vapor deposition technique was employed to develop test specimens, and atomic force microscopy has been used to identify the uniformity of emitting layer. In addition, optimal control set enabling the roughness of thin film surface to be minimized is presented, and the results obtained are compared with the experimental data. Generally good agreement has been achieved. It is known that the luminance decay mechanisms are directly related to the reliability of finished products, and thus further investigation has been carried out using the luminance decay curves. As shown by the results, the luminance decay may be divided into two major components during the failure processes. One is simple exponential during operation and the other is rapid decline in the initial stages of operation. It can be thought that the simple exponential decline is related to a chemical degradation of Hole Transport Layer, whereas the rapid decline is probably due to the generation of an internal electric field.

The combination of demanding designs and close cooperation among product, technology, and tool development has given rise to many innovations in the electronic design automation (EDA) area and provided IBM with a significant competitive advantage. This paper highlights IBM's contributions over the last four decades and presents a view of the future, where the best methods of multimillion gate ASIC and gigahertz microprocessor design are converged to enable highly productive system-on-a-chip designs that include widely diverse hardware and software components.

The Structure of High-Performing Project Management Organizations

This paper explores how project management performance varies with the degree to which development projects are “integrated” with the organization(s) that manages them. Integration is measured over multiple dimensions and related to performance as rated by managers of 15 pharmaceutical firms and their 117 drug development projects. Preliminary results support the theory that “dis-integrating” the project from the traditional functional hierarchy can provide the “distance” necessary for high-performance product development.
