In a search of the single-atom electrocatalysts for hydrogen production: the first sulfur-free mono- and diphenanthrenyl-terminated iron and cobalt(II) clathrochelates versus their thioanalogs

This paper reports on green chemistry approaches to the molecular design and synthesis of cheap, efficient and eco-friendly electrocatalysts of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The title clathrochelates (including first those do not containing sulfur derivatives as “catalytic poisons”) were prepared using nucleophilic substitution of their chloroclathrochelate precursors and characterized by analytical, spectral and XRD methods. These complexes showed the HER 2H+/H2 electrocatalytic activity in the solutions. They form the Langmuir monolayers and possess a high physisorption on activated carbon (AC, up to 0.55mmol·g–1) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO, up to 0.33mmol·g–1). Contrary that on carbon paper (CP) is very low. Therefore, AC- or RGO-containing clathrochelate-immobilized components are suitable for preparation of hybrid CP-based cathodes, allowing to substantially increase a surface concentration of electrocatalytically active centers up to 0.5 μmol·m–2. Cyclic voltammetry data suggest that the electrochemically generated cobalt(I) complexes, as the catalytically active intermediates, are stable and most prospective candidates for electrocatalytic hydrogen production. Clathrochelate-based single-atom catalysts were prepared in accordance with basic principles of green chemistry. They are derivatives of abundant and cheap 3d-biometals and low-toxic α-dioximes and possess an extremely high atomic utilization efficiency matching the “economy of atoms” principle. Nowadays, the carbon-supported metallic platinum is used as HER catalyst. The reserves of this noble and expensive metal on the Earth are limited and its replacement by such cheap and abundant HER materials will accelerate the development and implementation of green hydrogen-producing technologies. The recommendations on chemical structures of optimal molecular electrocatalysts were evaluated.

Information disclosure and funding success of green crowdfunding campaigns: a study on GoFundMe

AbstractCrowdfunding has become important in increasing financial support for the development of green technologies. Self-disclosed information significantly affects supporters’ decisions and is important for the success of green project funding. However, current studies still lack investigations into the impact of information disclosure on green crowdfunding performance. This research aims to fill this knowledge gap by exploring eight information disclosure-relevant factors in green crowdfunding performance. Applying machine learning techniques (e.g., Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision) and logistic regression, this study investigates 720 green crowdfunding campaigns on GoFundMe and empirically finds that the duration, length of campaign introductions, and length of the title influence fundraising outcomes. However, no evidence supports the impact of goal size, emotion of campaign introduction, or image content on funding success. This study clarifies the information disclosure-related data that green crowdfunding campaigns should consider and provides founders with a constructive guide to smoothly raise money for a green crowdfunding campaign. This study also contributes to data processing methods by providing future studies with an approach for transferring unstructured data to structured data.

Digital economy, technology, and urban carbon emissions nexus: an investigation using the threshold effects and mediation effects tests

IntroductionThis study aims to explore the mechanisms by which the digital economy influences urban carbon emissions in China, with a particular focus on potential threshold effects and the mediating role of technology. As the digital economy grows, it impacts various environmental metrics, including carbon emissions, necessitating a deeper understanding of its nonlinear dynamics and implications for sustainable urban development.MethodsUsing panel data from 286 prefecture-level cities in China spanning from 2012 to 2021, we apply threshold effect models and mediation effect tests. The threshold effect model is employed to investigate non-linear characteristics of the digital economy’s impact on carbon emissions, while the mediation effect model assesses the role of technology as an intermediary in this relationship.ResultsThe threshold effect model reveals a single threshold in the impact of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions, indicating a nonlinear relationship. Initially, the influence of the digital economy on emissions is weak, but as the digital economy develops, its effect becomes more pronounced. The mediation effect model demonstrates that technological advancement can offset the increase in emissions associated with digital economic growth, thus showcasing technology’s potential to mitigate environmental impacts.DiscussionThe findings suggest that while the digital economy generally promotes urban carbon emissions, its impact is non-linear and mitigatable through technological innovation. To curb emissions in urban areas, fostering technological innovation and supporting green technology research and development are critical. Moreover, enhancing management and supervision within the digital economy sector can contribute to balancing economic growth with environmental goals. These insights are valuable for policymakers striving to harmonize digital economic expansion with sustainable environmental practices.

ICT and energy consumption in Sub-Saharan Africa: Effects and transmission channels

This paper contributes to the literature on the relationship between information and communication technologies (ICTs) and energy consumption. Despite increasing attention on the subject, existing studies have not yet investigated the channels through which ICTs affect energy demand. We use a stochastic impact model extended to the population, wealth and technology regression model to estimate both the effect and transmission of ICTs on energy demand in 24 sub-Saharan African countries from 1995 to 2018. Empirical results show that ICT use, measured by mobile and fixed-line telephone penetration significantly reduces energy consumption. In addition, the mediation analysis reveals that ICTs not only have a direct negative effect on energy consumption but also an indirect negative effect through its impact on GDP per capita and industrial sector development and a mixed indirect effect through financial development. However, the total effect is negative and indicates that ICTs are reducing energy consumption in sub-Saharan Africa. To accentuate the negative effects of ICTs on energy consumption, Governments should design policies to improve access to credit for the private sector, reduce income inequalities among populations, promote the use of industrial development and provide financial incentives for the development of green technologies.

The impact of urban soccer events on carbon emissions: Panel threshold analysis for Chinese cities

The holding of soccer events has an important impact on modern urban activities, which is conducive to the economic development, social harmony, cultural integration and regional integration of cities. However, massive energy is consumed during the event preparation and infrastructure construction, resulting in an increase in the city’s carbon emissions. For the sustainable development of cities, it is important to explore the theoretical mechanism and practical effectiveness of the relationship between soccer events and urban carbon emissions, and to adopt appropriate policy management measures to control carbon emissions of soccer events. With the development of green technology, digitalization, and public transportation, the preparation and management methods of soccer events are diversified, and the possibility of carbon reduction of the event is further increased. This paper selects 17 cities in China from 2011 to 2019 and explores the complex impact of soccer events on urban carbon emissions by using green technology innovation, digitalization level and public transportation as threshold variables. The results show that: (1) Hosting soccer events increases carbon emissions with an impact coefficient of 0.021; (2) There is a negative single-threshold effect of green innovation technology, digitalization level and public transportation on the impact of soccer events on carbon emissions, with the impact coefficients of soccer events decreasing by 0.008, 0.01 and 0.06, respectively, when the threshold variable crosses the threshold. These findings will enhance the attention of city managers to the management of carbon emissions from soccer events and provide guidance for reducing carbon emissions from soccer events through green technology innovation, digital means and optimization of public transportation.

Surface metamorphosis techniques for sustainable polymers: Optimizing material performance and environmental impact

The transition to sustainable polymers is crucial for reducing the environmental footprint of additive manufacturing, particularly in fused deposition modeling (FDM). This study investigates surface metamorphosis techniques—methods to modify polymer surfaces at micro and nanoscale levels to enhance performance and minimize environmental impact. We explore plasma treatment, chemical etching, and laser texturing on biodegradable and recycled polymers, assessing their effects on surface properties, such as adhesion, roughness, and chemical resistance. Our results demonstrate significant enhancements in mechanical properties. For example, PLA’s tensile strength increased from 55.3 MPa (untreated) to 63.8 MPa (plasma treated), and its elongation improved from 4.2% to 5.1%. PHA showed a similar trend, with tensile strength rising from 45.1 MPa to 52.6 MPa, and elongation increasing from 5.6% to 6.4%. rPET and rPP also exhibited improvements, indicating the effectiveness of these surface treatments. Employing a multi-criteria decision-making approach, we assess and prioritize these techniques based on their mechanical enhancements and sustainability profiles. While this study presents hypothetical results, it establishes a comprehensive framework for optimizing surface metamorphosis processes, guiding future experimental research. Our findings suggest that tailored surface modifications can significantly improve the performance and environmental sustainability of polymers in FDM, offering pathways for integrating eco-friendly materials into advanced manufacturing. This work contributes to the development of green manufacturing technologies by highlighting surface metamorphosis as a key strategy for achieving high-performance and sustainable materials.

An Evaluation Scheme Driven by Science and Technological Innovation—A Study on the Coupling and Coordination of the Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation-Economy-Ecology Complex System in the Yangtze River Basin of China

This study focuses on 19 provinces in the Yangtze River Basin of China. It gathers relevant data indicators from 2010 to 2021 and constructs an evaluation index system centered on agricultural science and technology innovation. The study evaluates the relationship between agricultural “science and technology innovation-economy-ecology” systems and identifies key obstacle factors using the obstacle degree model. The study draws the following conclusions: Firstly, the comprehensive development level index of the agricultural science and technology innovation system shows an overall linear upward trend (values range from 0.121 to 0.382). Secondly, the comprehensive development level index of the agricultural economic system exhibits an upward trend but with a relatively small overall magnitude (values range from 0.248 to 0.322). Thirdly, the comprehensive development level index of the agricultural ecological system demonstrates significant overall fluctuations, with notable regional disparities (values range from 0.384 to 0.414). Fourthly, the overall agricultural SEE (Science and technological innovation, Economy, Ecology) complex system exhibits a characteristic of “high coupling, low coordination”, identifying the main obstacle factors influencing agricultural SEECS based on a formulated approach. Subsequently, the following policy recommendations are proposed: Firstly, enhance the agricultural technological innovation system and promote green and efficient agricultural technology research and development. Secondly, to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of modern agriculture, achieving green and high-quality development of the agricultural economy. Thirdly, to strengthen agricultural ecological environment protection, laying a solid foundation for the healthy and sustainable development of agriculture.

The impact of a low-carbon transport system policy on total factor carbon emission performance: Evidence from 283 cities in China

Reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector is crucial to achieve “carbon neutrality” and is an important component of a low-carbon policy system. In response to the uncertainty of evaluating current low-carbon transport policies, we provide an in-depth analysis and examination of low-carbon transport system (LCTS) policies implemented in China. Using data from 283 Chinese cities between 2006 and 2020, we provide evidence on the policy effects, potential mechanisms, and heterogeneity of LCTS policies on carbon emission performance. Results showed that LCTS policies significantly improved carbon emission performance in pilot regions. The main ways to achieve this policy's objective were to reduce energy consumption in pilot cities, to promote the development of green technologies, and to implement low-carbon transformation of public transport. Moreover, there was heterogeneity in the policy's effects, with the implementation of a LCTS being more effective in eastern and central regions of China and in larger and more compact cities. By analysing the policy's mechanisms and heterogeneity of effects, this article provides a reference for the formulation and selection of low-carbon transport policies.

How green governance empowers high-quality development: An EKC framework-based analysis of ESG and green total factor productivity.

High-quality development represents a fundamental shift in China's economy from scale and speed to quality and efficiency. In this transition, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices are not only closely integrated with China's development strategy but have also become a core standard for measuring development quality. Nevertheless, research on how ESG practices specifically promote high-quality development in Chinese enterprises remains limited. Based on the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) theory framework, this study uses data from the Huazheng ESG Index from 2009 to 2022 and employs fixed effect models, mediation effect models, and heterogeneity analysis to examine the specific impact of China's ESG practices on corporate high-quality development from multiple dimensions. The results show that there is a "U-shaped" relationship between the ESG practices of Chinese listed companies and green total factor productivity (GTFP). Initially, improving ESG practices may temporarily suppress GTFP, but as ESG levels further improve, they exhibit a significant positive impact on GTFP. Corporations significantly boost productivity by alleviating financing constraints and promoting green technological innovation, although the direct impact on technological advancement remains relatively limited. In China's western regions and industries such as manufacturing, electricity, heat, gas, and water production and supply, wholesale and retail, and information transmission, software, and information technology services, the positive effects of ESG on GTFP are particularly evident. Based on these findings, it is recommended that governments and financial institutions collaborate to promote green credit policies and increase support for the research and development of green technologies. Additionally, environmental education and resource use optimization should be strengthened, especially in industries such as agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fisheries, and the exchange of ESG technologies and experiences between industries should be encouraged.

Micelle-assisted electrodeposition of mesoporous PtCo nodular films and their electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media

Hydrogen has received extensive attention in the energy field due to its high energy density and environmental friendliness. However, the large overpotential and slow kinetics limit the development of green water electrolysis technology. Rational design and construction of efficient and economical electrocatalysts are essential for sustainable hydrogen production. In this work, mesoporous PtCo films are successfully prepared by micelle-assisted electrodeposition using Pluronic F127 as a soft template. The optimal electrodeposition conditions of the film such as temperature and potential are determined. The composition of the films can be adjusted with the deposition potential to a Co content up to 45 at.%. The mesoporosity is clearly present at T=45 °C and E= − 0.6 V with a pore diameter of around 5–10 nm. The mechanism for the mesoporous PtCo films is proposed and the electrocatalytic activity in H2SO4 is evaluated. Mesoporous PtCo film with 45 at.% Co exhibits excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance over commercial Pt/C, with an overpotential of − 22 mV at a current density of − 10 mA cm−2, and exhibits remarkable durability in the 24 h long-term aging stability test.

Micro-mechanism of glycine action in tribochemical mechanical polishing of single-crystal sapphire substrate: Experimental and first-principles analysis

With the rapid development of novel optoelectronic devices, an environmentally friendly and highly efficient polishing technology for SC-sapphire substrates is imminent. In this work, the micro-mechanism of Gly action in TCMP of SC-sapphire substrate is systematically studied by TCMP experiments and first-principles calculations. The results of TCMP experiments confirm that the maximum MRR of 5.37 μm/h with Ra of 0.42 nm can be attained at optimal concentration of Gly, without any acid or alkali corrosive solution. The first-principles calculations of the Gly/SC-sapphire heterostructure further reveal the reaction behavior of the -COOH functional group with and without lattice distortion. The results of both TCMP experiments and VASP simulations demonstrate that the incorporation of Gly can facilitate the friction-induced Gly/SC-sapphire reaction, which significantly enhances the processing surface quality and the processing efficiency of SC-sapphire substrates. Finally, based on the above research, a microscopic material removal model for the Gly-based SC-sapphire substrate TCMP is constructed. The above findings are of great significance in promoting the development of green ultra-precision polishing technology for semiconductor substrates.

The cost-efficiency carbon pricing puzzle

Any global temperature target must be translated into an intertemporal carbon budget and its associated cost-efficient carbon price schedule. Under the Hotelling’s rule without uncertainty, the growth rate of this price should be equal to the interest rate. It is therefore a puzzle that many cost-efficiency IAM models yield carbon prices that increase at an average real growth rate above 7% per year, a very large return for traders of carbon assets. I explore whether uncertainties surrounding the development of green technologies could solve this puzzle. I show that future marginal abatement costs and aggregate consumption are positively correlated. This justifies doing less for climate change than in the safe case, implying a smaller initial carbon price, and an expected growth rate of carbon price that is larger than the interest rate. In the benchmark calibration of my model, I obtain an equilibrium interest rate around 1% and an expected growth rate of carbon price around 3.5%, yielding an optimal carbon price above 200 USD/tCO2 within the next few years. I also show that the rigid carbon budget approach to cost-efficiency carbon pricing implies a large uncertainty surrounding the future carbon prices that support this constraint. I show that green investors should be compensated for this risk by a large risk premium embedded in the growth rate of expected carbon prices, rather than by a collar on carbon prices as often recommended.

Optimized Lithium(I) Recovery from Geothermal Brine of Germencik, Türkiye, Utilizing an Aminomethyl phosphonic Acid Chelating Resin

ABSTRACT This study investigates the performance of Lewatit TP 260 ion exchange resin for the efficient recovery of lithium (Li(I)) from geothermal water sourced from the Germencik Geothermal Power Plant in Türkiye. A series of batch sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of key parameters, including resin dosage, solution pH, temperature, initial Li(I) concentration, and contact time, on the Li(I) recovery process. The optimal conditions were determined to be a resin dose of 0.5 g per 25 mL of geothermal water, pH in the range of 6–8, and a temperature of 25°C. Under these conditions, the resin achieved a maximum Li(I) recovery rate of 71% from the geothermal water. Sorption isotherms were further analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models. Among these, the Langmuir model provided the best fit (R² = 0.9841), suggesting a maximum sorption capacity (qm) of 4.31 mg/g. Continuous recovery experiments conducted in column mode confirmed the practical applicability of Lewatit TP 260, achieving a total sorption capacity of 0.41 mg Li(I)/mL resin. The findings exhibit the potential of this resin as a viable sorbent for sustainable Li(I) extraction from geothermal brines, supporting the development of green energy technologies and contributing to the circular economy.

Quantitative sustainability assessment for in-situ electrical resistance heating coupled with steam enhanced extraction: An effective approach for the development of green remediation technologies

There is a lack of quantitative methodology for the sustainability assessment based on field data in the process of innovative technology development for groundwater remediation. This study developed a quantitative assessment framework, a model based on the life cycle assessment integrated with best management practices (LCA-BMPs), to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of in-situ electrical resistance heating coupled with steam enhanced extraction (ERH-SEE), an innovative technology being demonstrated in the field. The results indicated that ERH-SEE offered better environmental sustainability performance compared to ERH only, with a reduction in carbon emissions by 52.6 %. ERH-SEE also significantly reduces human toxicity, resource consumption, and ecosystem impacts under the same remediation scenarios. The further assessment indicated that if taking the renewable energy share in energy structure in different countries into consideration, higher shares of renewable energy used in energy supplies can substantially reduce the environmental footprint of the studied scenarios. The economic sustainability assessment results showed that ERH-SEE was more sustainable than ERH only, as it reduces direct economic costs by 35.7 % and provides higher levels of worker employment. Regarding the social sustainability, ERH-SEE involved more complex operational procedures and presented more health risk exposure scenarios compared to ERH only, resulting in slightly more pronounced worker safety issues. Based on the final normalized results, the overall sustainability results of ERH-SEE and ERH only were 78.4 and 61.5, respectively, demonstrating that the sustainability performance of ERH-SEE was better than ERH only. It can be concluded that the application of ERH-SEE in groundwater remediation where significant heterogeneities occur in subsurface can increase the sustainability in developing countries, due to the lower percentage in renewable electricity in the energy supply. This study provided new insights into the technology development for the remediation of soil and groundwater contamination.

The Informational-Educational Environment of Additional Professional Education for Learning the Basics of Green Construction

The relevance of the topic of the article is determined by the need to introduce promising green building technology into domestic construction practice. The purpose of the article is based on the analysis of the current situation with green construction in Russia to substantiate the need for students of the system of additional professional education to master the basics of green construction technology and to develop an educational retraining program and appropriate educational and methodological support related to the study of the basics of green construction. The following research methods are used: theoretical analysis of scientific results devoted to the identification of the essence of development and the establishment of trends in various systems of civil engineering education, analysis of curricula and manuals for architectural and construction training of students; expert analytical methods for evaluating the content of methodological and software tools designed to master special disciplines in architectural and construction training of students in the context of digital transformation of education. As a result of the analysis of scientific publications in the field of educational management, the need to improve the system in the field of architectural and construction training and the development of green building technology has been identified. The analysis of the existing shortcomings of traditional construction project management is carried out, the need to study the basics of green construction and develop appropriate educational and methodological materials implemented in the context of digital transformation of the construction industry is justified. The content structure for the development of an electronic educational resource for the study of the discipline is considered, the content of each block of content is described, and the connections between the blocks are shown. The reasons hindering the development of engineering management of green construction in Russia are systematized. Advanced training of students in the field of green construction will help to overcome the factors hindering the introduction of green technology in domestic construction. The results of the article may be of interest to specialists of architectural and construction universities engaged in the preparation of bachelors and masters for the construction industry in the context of digital transformation of education. Environmental monitoring of the transportation sector in meta-analytic study

Abstract Environmental monitoring is the process of collecting, monitoring and analyzing data related to physical and biological environment in order to understand environmental conditions, identify problems that may occur and take action to protect and improve the environment. Environmental monitoring in transportation sector is directed at understanding its contribution to air pollution, noise pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, habitat destruction, and other impacts on environment. The purpose of this study is to identify derivative concepts in environmental monitoring for encouraging the development of green technology through analysis of scientific publications. Meta-analysis applied through bibliometric analysis to the concept of environmental monitoring in transportation sector is expected to produce novel findings. Analytic hierarchy process is carried out as follow-up analysis in determining choices and priorities on topic findings that have novelty. Data collection was obtained in the form of scientific journals published for 2018-2022 sourced from Google Scholar through a search with the concept of environmental monitoring in transportation sector. The results of study found that several derivative topics in the concept of environmental monitoring in transportation sector have novelties including atmospheric transport, gas sensing, carbon footprint, tritium transport, vertical transport, smart grid and intelligent transportation system. While priority topics that are expected to be followed up in the development of knowledge and technology in the future include carbon footprint, gas sensing and intelligent transportation systems.

During the period 2018 - 2023, Vietnam has witnessed a close correlation between economic growth, expressed through GDP, and carbon emissions (CO2), posing many challenges and opportunities in the journey towards Sustainable Development. Although Vietnam’s economy has achieved impressive growth, the question of the dark side of growth - rising CO2 emissions - is also seriously concerned. The current state of green economic development during this period reflects Vietnam’s efforts in balancing economic development and environmental protection. However, the transition to a green economic model still faces many challenges, from infrastructure, technology to people’s and businesses’ awareness. Carbon emissions in Vietnam during this period also recorded a significant increase, reflecting that lifestyles and development models are not truly sustainable. This further emphasizes the importance of implementing solutions to minimize environmental impacts while developing the economy in a sustainable way. The relationship between green economic development and carbon emissions shows that converting to a green economic model not only reduces emissions, but also brings long-term economic benefits through savings. energy, reducing production costs and increasing competition. To promote green economic development and reduce carbon emissions in Vietnam, a combination of solutions from government, businesses and the community is needed. Solutions include: increased use of clean energy, development of green technology, improved energy efficiency, and increased environmental awareness. This requires a strong and synchronized strategy from all stakeholders to create a green and sustainable future for Vietnam.

Harnessing corporate digitalization for green tech advancements: The mediating influence of mineral resource endowments

This study investigates the potential of corporate digitalization to drive advancements in green technology, emphasizing the mediating role of mineral resource endowments. The research addresses the urgent need for sustainable development amid growing environmental challenges and highlights the critical role of corporate digitalization in fostering green technology innovations. The objectives are to analyze the impact of digitalization on green technology advancements among 2341 Chinese A-listed firms from 2010 to 2022 and to explore how mineral resource endowments influence this relationship. Our findings reveal that firms with higher levels of digitalization significantly improve their adoption and innovation of green technology. Additionally, mineral resource endowments amplify the positive effects of digitalization on green tech advancements, serving as a vital mediating factor. The results indicate that firms in regions with abundant mineral resources are better positioned to utilize digital technologies for green innovations. Furthermore, our analysis shows that digitalization promotes greater collaboration and knowledge sharing, accelerating green technology development.
