Applying Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technology in Pre-Tender Cost Estimation of Construction Projects: A Case Study in Iran

The pre-tender cost estimation serves as the foundation for determining the project cost in the early stages and is crucial for all parties involved in the tendering process. It is expected to be highly accurate. However, industry surveys have advocated that in the Iranian construction industry, the pre-tender estimated costs of construction projects are not sufficiently accurate during the bidding stage. Building information modelling (BIM) technology is a modern digital tool deployed in the construction industry that has seen substantial growth of application. It employs useful tools in different sectors and has extended its involvement in various stages of the project lifecycle, including feasibility studies, planning, design, construction, and operation and maintenance. This study examines and assesses the status of BIM development in Iran for its applicability in the pre-tender cost estimating process in construction projects. The findings of this study indicate that while there is a limited number of Iranian building projects’ BIM models that possess the required quality and capabilities for BIM-based cost estimation, the results obtained are more precise when compared to existing manual methods. Additionally, utilising BIM-based cost estimation significantly reduces the time required for this process by enhancing the speed of cost estimation operations. An innovative evaluation framework for assessing the quality and functionalities of BIM models is presented, which improves the accuracy of cost estimation before the bidding process in Iran’s construction industry. The research findings demonstrate the enhanced accuracy and effectiveness of BIM as compared to conventional approaches. It also suggests the incorporation of AI technology for model evaluation, which has the potential to become an established global industry standard.

Sustainability factors of building information modeling (BIM) for a successful construction project management life cycle in Indonesia

Building information modeling (BIM) is an important asset in construction projects from conceptual planning to the preconstruction and operation stages. While many construction projects in developed countries are gradually implementing BIM, the development of this technology in developing countries is still lagging. Some research shows that the application of BIM for certain uses can improve the performance of construction projects, but in Indonesia, its use is still very low. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that can answer the challenges in the sustainability of BIM implementation in construction projects in Indonesia for success in its life cycle. Data were obtained from 44 respondents who answered the questionnaire questions, including owners, supervisory consultants, and contractors representing construction parties in Indonesia. Empirical analysis using multiple linear regression states that there are five factors that, if used to sustainably support the application of BIM, will affect the success of construction project management in its life cycle. The five factors rank as follows based on the results of the analysis: Understanding and Awareness of the importance of BIM; Establishment of BIM standards, codes, rules, and regulations; Competencies and Skills; Commitment and Consistency; and Monitoring and Evaluation. The development of BIM has resulted in new work processes and new ways to interact in construction projects throughout their life cycles.

Development and Challenges of BIM in the Construction Industry in China and Australia

This article examines the application and development of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the construction industries of China and Australia. The visual, coordination, simulation, and optimization characteristics of BIM provide a foundation for project management. In China, BIM has been widely adopted in major engineering projects, but it still faces challenges such as inactive design institutes, inconsistent data standards, and a shortage of BIM talent. BIM usage in Australia is relatively low, partially due to the lack of government enforcement. It is recommended to promote wider BIM application in various fields through training, resource support, establishing industry standards, and providing incentives. In summary, BIM technology holds significant potential for the future development of the construction industry, but overcoming various challenges is necessary to achieve its maximum benefits.

Application of BIM in project management in China

As a nation that is quickly developing, Chinas construction industry faces a variety of issues. Despite the size and technical complexity of some Chinese projects, the old paper documents and two-dimensional drawing techniques are no longer adequate to meet demand. Chinas construction sector has enormous potential. Therefore, effective digital technology and the best project management are crucial for the growth of Chinas construction business. Throughout the whole life cycle of a construction project, including all phases of planning, design, building, operation, and maintenance, Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be used. This study intends to investigate the use of BIM in project management in China with a particular emphasis on how BIM impacts project design, construction, and operation. By analysing the successful cases of BIM in Chinas project management, the prospect and development of BIM in Chinas construction industry are discussed. In the whole process of project management, BIM improves quality, efficiency, sustainability and maintainability through various applications. It is intended to provide Chinas construction industry with a tool to promote the modernization and long-term growth of the industry.

Penerimaan BIM di Kalangan Kontraktor PKS dalam Industri Pembinaan Malaysia

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a modelling technology that provides construction professionals with digital tools for use in project planning, design, monitoring, and control. The potential advantages of putting BIM into practice are known to the Malaysian government. The Malaysian government has taken a number of steps to promote BIM in the hopes that Malaysian construction industry experts will utilize it extensively. However, significant difficulties are delaying the introduction of BIM in Malaysia. Implementing BIM typically presents difficulties for smaller businesses. Even though there are numerous benefits to utilizing BIM, small and medium-sized construction companies are still cautious to do so in the course of their work. This study examines BIM adoption in Malaysian small and medium-sized construction firms. The present degree of BIM adoption in Malaysia’s construction industry as well as the best tactics to encourage SME contractors in Malaysia’s construction industry to embrace BIM more effectively were the subjects of a questionnaire survey that was conducted. According to the survey’s results, SME contractors are still trailing behind in adopting BIM due to a number of obstacles that stand in the way of its adoption. In order to increase BIM adoption among SME contractors, it is crucial that government agencies successfully promote and encourage BIM use across the whole Malaysian construction sector. The importance of this study is in gathering data on the extent of BIM adoption among SME contractors, which might be utilized as a benchmark and reference for the development of BIM in the Malaysian construction industry.

Integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Big Data in China: Recent Application and Future Perspective

The integrated application of building information modeling (BIM) and big data (BD) has received widespread attention, and has been involved in smart construction sites, construction project management, and construction project budgeting. Nevertheless, research on the integrated implementation of BIM and BD in China mainly concentrates on a project stage or profession, the exploration of technology integration mostly focuses on the theoretical level, and the research distribution is scattered. As such, the intention of this paper is to reveal the research history of BIM and BD in China, as well as to study the research methodologies and research fields for a more thorough knowledge of the BIM and BD research and development status in the Chinese construction sector, which adopts a mixed research method that uses a quantitative research via two analytical software tools, i.e., CiteSpace version of 6.1.R6 and the Statistical Analysis Toolkit on line edition for Informetrics software packages, to conduct a macro bibliometric analysis on BIM and BD research in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, and provides a follow-up micro qualitative research with content analysis. To ensure the comprehensiveness of the research, the core articles of the topic in the web of science database have been sorted out and analyzed for fully understanding the development of BIM and BD in the field of Chinese construction, resulting in identifying the current research hotspots and trends in China. The results suggest that the popular research keywords on BIM and BD in China since the year 2015 have mainly been focused on informatization, the internet of things, and rail transportation. Three fruitful research themes in BIM and BD research in China have been identified, including smart construction, smart operation, and bridge informatization.

BIM implementation model from the standpoint of concern-based adoption theory

PurposeThis study investigated the concerns and plans of construction professionals about building information modeling (BIM) implementation, found the acceptable BIM implementation driving forces and strategies for them and developed a prescriptive BIM implementation model to help understand how BIM implementation concerns, intentions, driving forces and strategies are connected.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a positivist paradigm with a hypothetico-deductive research strategy as well as concern-based adoption theory as a conceptual lens to distinguish construction professionals (CPs)' BIM implementation concerns and intentions. This implies that the forces driving BIM implementation intentions and concerns are related to BIM implementation methods and that their concentrations are proportional to the intensity of BIM implementation strategies. A 16-item questionnaire tailored to the operations of CPs was used for data collection. The data collected from respondents were utilized to evaluate the proposed model using structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques.FindingsFindings from the data collected from the respondents revealed that CPs are concerned about the impact of BIM deployment on their time and service quality. Their main purpose was to take drives to learn more about BIM in order to pique their curiosity. Embracing the latest digital technology and beginning self-initiated BIM training are two strategies that would be quite effective in boosting BIM deployment.Research limitations/implicationsThe study identifies promising directions for future BIM implementation research and development. The study's findings imply that more theoretically motivated research, rather than just empirical research, is required to refine BIM implementation concerns.Practical implicationsThe study has implications for the professional development of CPs as well as understanding the process of implementing BIM change. The study's findings will help to understand the resource system for assessing CPs' needs and concerns and selecting personalized BIM implementation strategies.Originality/valueBefore this study, BIM-related studies had ignored the concerns and goals of the CPs when it came to implementing BIM. Using the CPs' concerns and hopes for BIM implementation, a systemic BIM implementation model was developed that would help and speed up BIM adoption.

CBR-RBR fusion based parametric rapid construction method of bridge BIM model

The development of BIM (Building Information Modeling) parametric modeling technology has improved the reusability and modeling efficiency of building information models. Aiming at the problems of too many parameters and long time in the rapid parametric construction of the bridge BIM model, we propose a novel parametric rapid construction method of bridge BIM model based on the integration of CBR (Case Based Reasoning) and RBR (Rule Based Reasoning), which is used to realize the rapid construction of bridge BIM model. Firstly, the modeling characteristics of CBR and RBR are analyzed, and a parametric modeling framework of CBR-RBR fusion is proposed. Secondly, a MHPO (Modified Hunter-Prey Optimization) algorithm is proposed to assign the weight of feature parameters to improve the accuracy of the prediction model. Then, modeling parameter reasoning rules are designed to realize the construction of parameter reasoning model. Finally, the prototype system is developed to verify the proposed method based on Revit and C#. Compared with manual modeling and traditional parametric modeling, the fusion method of CBR and RBR greatly shortens the modeling time and improves modeling efficiency and flexibility.

Building Information Modelling for Application in Geotechnical Engineering

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is used to create and manage data during design, construction, and operation. It helps to effectively manage resources and optimize processes in the construction industry. Geotechnical engineering is one of the complex disciplines that may require BIM integration. Various data types must be provided in a timely manner and require real-time feedback, fast processing, and construction guidance. The first problem presented in the paper is the use of the traditional 2D-based method used by engineers for a particular task. It seems to be impractical when some adjustments are included. Another issue is the lack of communication between the workers. It poses the problem of information exchange and misunderstanding during the interpretation of technical data. This paper aims to find different integration techniques and steps for integrating geotechnical data into the BIM process. Methods used to examine the topic are qualitative research, literature review, and case studies. These methods were useful for studying the problems and introducing the soil information into the BIM application. Firstly, a case study with I-BIM was considered, and the BIM–FEM–BIM interaction was applied to introduce geotechnical information with Plaxis 3D. The results have shown that further development of BIM in infrastructure is needed. Another case study explored the present state of the geotechnical design in BIM and potential solutions. The new frameworks were recreated: many boreholes were imported to the BIM, and a 3D geometric model of the entire hill was created for the hill fortification structure with soil clogging. The last two studies in Malaysia modeled a 3D subsurface and used two geotechnical formats, AGS and CVS. The first includes more information than the second; however, the second can be used for a more generalized model. Overall, BIM–FEM interaction can be used as a geometric model for data transfer. However, the open data format of the Industry Foundation Class (IFC) or geotechnical data format of the AGS and CVS were suggested to be used for greater flexibility. It was also found that excessive information makes the model loaded and complex. Therefore, it was recommended that big data be summarized properly with minimal loss of necessary data. Further research is needed to understand data transmission schemes of geotechnical information better. Moreover, it is recommended to put all the strategies directly into practice to create a geotechnical design.

Application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Six Dimension (6D) in Green Buildings: A Case Study of Sunshine and Daylight Analysis

Although a considerable amount of research has been focused on how building information modeling (BIM) helps improve sustainable construction, BIM(6D) model validation and efficient data analysis methods are still lacking. This study aims to provide the more effective research method and analytical method. The Greenjiansville Sunshine analysis software Sun2020 and daylight analysis software Dali2020 were used for 6D modeling and simulation and real simulation of a building outside the daylight range and time. The daylight coefficients, outdoor visual field observation rate, and daylight quality were calculated for the rooms inside the building. The results show that single the daylight statistics and analysis color map can not accurately analyze whether the actual daylighting meets the demand, but combined with Power BI comprehensive analysis can get fast and accurate results. This paper provides important guidance for building researchers and practitioners to better align BIM development with green building development in the future.

Research on the BIM Application Mechanism of Engineering-Procurement-Construction Projects Based on a Tripartite Evolutionary Game

This study establishes a tripartite evolutionary game model based on the assumptions of bounded rationality and the interaction behavior of governments, owners, and general contractors to examine how strategies are changing for three stakeholders regarding the building information modeling (BIM) application in engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) projects. The theoretical model was validated and the effects of critical factors on stakeholder decision making were discussed using case study and numerical simulation analysis. The results show that (1) the choice of the BIM application strategy in EPC projects is affected by the interactive behavior of participants in the game, (2) the reasonable subsidies contribute to the evolution of the ideal stable strategy, (3) the owners’ high standard of incentives for general contractors can accelerate BIM promotion, (4) the general contractors are more sensitive to the loss that may be caused by problems with the BIM application, and (5) the positive externalities generated by the application of BIM have a great impact on the wide application of BIM. And some suggestions are put forward toward improving the development of BIM in EPC projects on the basis of findings. This study may contribute to our current understanding of the interactions of stakeholders in EPC projects, as well as provide valuable management implications for the governments in order to promote the development of BIM.

Impacts of Policy Mix Comprehensiveness on BIM Implementation: Moderating Effects of Environmental State and Response Uncertainty

Due to the great potential but limited use of building information modeling (BIM) as a milestone technology to reshape traditional design and construction practices, governments in many regions of the world have formulated specific sets of complementary policy instruments, namely, policy mixes, to facilitate the development of BIM in the construction industry. Drawing on institutional theory and the organizational sensemaking literature, this study aims to examine how regional institutional policies impact organizational BIM implementation practices and how these impacts are moderated by different sources of uncertainty related to policy making and enforcement from a policy mix comprehensiveness perspective. The effects were empirically tested with a panel data set of 992 high-tech construction firms from 31 provincial jurisdictions in China during 2011–2021. The results provide clear evidence that while regional policy mix comprehensiveness positively impacts the level of BIM implementation at the organizational level, this relationship becomes stronger when firms are experiencing higher levels of environmental state uncertainty derived from regional politician turnover but weaker when firms are experiencing higher levels of response uncertainty derived from organizational top management team (TMT) turnover. As an exploratory effort to empirically assess the impacts of policy environments in the conservative construction industry through integrating the complexity of both regional policy instruments and organizational decision-making processes, this study contributes to a deepened understanding of how construction firms interact with external environments to implement innovative technologies under institutional pressures. The findings reinforce the need to devise policies for innovation diffusion in the construction industry from a more systemic and contingent perspective.

Application of building information modeling (BIM) for transportation infrastructure: a scoping review

Abstract—Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an emerging technology frequently and thoroughly implemented in the civil construction sector. Yet a complete BIM implementation developed explicitly for the transportation infrastructure sector remains primarily uncharted. The infrastructure sector plays a crucial role in the economy and society. Because of this substance, it is of belief BIM has great potential to increase the overall efficiency and sustainability in this industry. This scoping review will study the many advantages of BIM, while being conscious of the current research gaps and shortcomings concerning a complete BIM implementation into the transportation infrastructure sector. Additionally, this paper will explore future possibilities and directions for the development of BIM. This scoping research will be conducted using a specific methodology ensuring an accurate representation of the available literature, guaranteeing a comprehensive conclusion regarding the recommendations concerning a full BIM implementation into the transportation infrastructure sector.

Automated 4D BIM development: the resource specification and optimization approach

PurposeThis research aims to develop an automated and optimization algorithms (OAs)-integrated 4D building information modeling (BIM) approach and a prototype and enable construction managers and practitioners to estimate the time of compound elements in building projects using the resource specification technique.Design/methodology/approachA 4D BIM estimation process was first developed by applying the resource specification and geometric information from the BIM model. A suite of OA including particle swarm optimization, ant colony, differential evolution and genetic algorithm were developed and compared in order to facilitate and automate the estimation process. The developed processes and porotypes were linked and integrated.FindingsThe OA-based automated 4D BIM estimation prototype was developed and validated through a real-life construction project. Different OAs were applied and compared, and the genetic algorithm was found as the best performing one. The prototype was successfully linked with BIM timeliner application. By using this approach, the start and finish dates of all object-based activities are developed, and the project completion time is automatically estimated.Originality/valueUnlike conventional construction estimation methods which need various tools and are error prone and time-consuming, the developed method bypasses the existing time estimation tools and provides the integrated and automated process with BIM and machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, this approach integrates 4D BIM applications into construction design procedures, connected with OA automation.

Developing a heritage BIM shared library for two case studies in Jordan’s heritage: The House of Art in Amman and the Qaqish House in the World Heritage City of As-Salt

International research is moving towards the development of BIM (Building Information Modelling) libraries applied to the built heritage where one of the main issues to be addressed is the modelling of complex or unique shapes that represent the specific construction components of every single asset. This perspective addresses the generation of parametric families of representative architectural geometry in the context of the management and representation of a building of heritage value. Jordan’s architectural heritage has gone through a long period of evolution and development: the result is a mixture of influences and traditions, making a great stride to conserve its buildings and Historical Heritage but has never adopted advanced digital technologies such as Building Information Modelling. In this framework, the present research aims to bridge the gap in Jordan by applying digital technologies to support heritage conservation plans by creating a 3D library of BIM objects related to typical elements of Jordanian and Arabic architecture, specifically in two cases of study. Co-production and collaboration with diverse stakeholders were central to the development of the methodology and design of the research.As a result, the first open-access HBIM shared library of historical features of Jordanian built heritage will be consolidated; this is crucial because it will set a precedent for the further documentation and conservation of the heritage of traditional cities in Jordan, MENA countries and internationally by promoting social cohesion, economic and technological development, tourism and the awareness of Jordan’s cultural heritage.

Building Information Modelling in quantity surveying practices: current state and future challenges in Hong Kong

The use of building information modelling (BIM) in recent years has accelerated the performance and productivity of the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. BIM can promote lean management, with enhanced control over budget and cost. However, the application of BIM for quantity surveying (QS) practices has not been extensively explored. Thus, this study examined the current situation and future challenges of BIM adoption in QS practices in Hong Kong. Questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews were administered to obtain insights from AEC industry practitioners in Hong Kong. Sixty survey respondents and nine interviewees participated in this study. The participants were quantity surveyors from developers, consultancy firms, and contractor companies. Results suggest that quantity surveyors are increasingly adopting BIM in Hong Kong. However, the low quality of BIM models and improper implementation of BIM often limit BIM adoption in QS practices. Another critical challenge is the absence of well-recognised BIM standards. Moreover, the shortage of skilled BIM professionals jeopardises the development and adoption of BIM in QS practices. The findings highlight the current achievements and barriers associated with BIM adoption in QS practices in Hong Kong. Prerequisites for successfully applying BIM in QS practices are suggested herein.

An Automatic Generation Method of Finite Element Model Based on BIM and Ontology

For the mechanical analysis work in the structural design phase, data conversion and information transfer between BIM model and finite element model have become the main factors limiting its efficiency and quality, with the development of BIM (building information modeling) technology application in the whole life cycle. The combined application of BIM and ontology technology has promoted the automation of compliance checking, cost management, green building evaluation, and many other fields. Based on OpenBIM, this study combines IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) and the ontology system and proposes an automatic generation method for converting BIM to the finite element model. Firstly, the elements contained in the finite element model are generalized and the information set requirement, to be extracted or inferred from BIM for the generation of the finite element model, is obtained accordingly. Secondly, the information extraction technical route is constructed to satisfy the acquisition of the information set, including three main aspects, i.e., IFC-based material information, spatial information, and other basic information; ontology-based finite element cell selection method; and APDL statement generation methods based on JAVA, C#, etc. Finally, a complete technical route and a software architecture, designed for converting BIM to the finite element model, are derived. To assess the feasibility of the method, a simple structure is tested in this paper, and the result indicates that the automatic decision-making reasoning mechanism of constructing element type and meshing method can be explored by ontology and IFC. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing an efficient method for automatic generation of the BIM structure model and a reference for future applications using BIM in structural analysis.

AUTOMATIC MODELLING OF PROPERTY OWNERSHIP IN BIM

Abstract. A 2D land administration system is insufficient for managing private properties and common property areas in a multi-story structure. Building information modelling (BIM) can be used to provide a clearer representation and more efficient management of the rights, restrictions, and responsibilities (RRR) inside buildings and address the challenges of 2D representations. However, a land surveyor should still draw the legal boundaries and group ownership spaces manually inside 3D BIM authoring tools. This research aims to provide an automatic approach to define three different types of legal boundaries and group the common properties and private properties within a building. This work contributes to the use and development of BIM by providing an automatic technique to creating property ownership, allowing for easier search and retrieval of 3D property information. More significantly, it can potentially minimize the time and cost of creating BIM-based 3D cadastral data for complex multi-story structures and improve the efficiency in urban land administration.

EFFECTIVE 5D BIM REQUIREMENTS FOR RISK MITIGATION DURING PRE-CONTRACT STAGE

The implementation of building information modelling (BIM) can be challenging without proper processes, procedures and standards. As the development of BIM progresses, there are concerns related to the five-dimensional (5D) BIM procedures in producing deliverables from the cost aspects of the project that adopts BIM technology. While the concerns may expose to amount of risks that can influence the project cost, this paper is determined to investigate the technical risks of 5D BIM practice and explore risk mitigation strategies for the construction project that adopts 5D BIM technology. Three main groups of technical risks were identified and reviewed, namely modelling issues, poor execution procedures and design change issues. The population of this paper consists of quantity surveyors and the respondents come from consultancy firms, contractors and developers. This paper also found twelve critical issues and challenges of 5D BIM implementation that had been analysed with the relative importance index (RII) analysis. Risk mitigation strategies are proposed to make a positive impact on the 5D BIM implementation, which consist of regular checks and balances, improve skills and knowledge through training and acquire suitable 5D BIM applications. The use of a BIM execution plan (BEP) and BIM protocol are also being discussed in this paper.

Building Information Modeling Application in Civil Engineering Field -- Take Gongbei Tunnel as an Example

Building Information Modelling (BIM), the direct product of digital technology, is now widely applied in the civil engineering field as a tool to enhance the overall construction project design and implement. Compared with Europe and the US, China has a later start in BIM technology, but has still achieved certain results in the past decade. Therefore, this research studies the application of BIM technology in the field of civil engineering and selects an example to analyze. This research reviews the development of BIM in China, revealing the broad development prospects in China's market. And by selecting the BIM application in Gongbei tunnel as an example, the detail functions of BIM software and their advantages are concluded: (1) Visualization of models; (2) Higher collaboration efficiency; (3) Higher cost management efficiency. This research can help promoting the future development of BIM in China.
