This paper describes an implementation of a global reference mechanism and its integration with multimedia teleservices projects. The mechanism consists of two services, the External Reference Production (ERP; [6]) service and the Referenced Data Transfer (RDT; ISO/IEC 10740, [15] ff.) service. The ERP service is for storing data in a remote store. Its protocol was specified at GMD Fokus. The RDT represents the retrieval component of the reference mechanism. The whole mechanism is based on the Referenced Object Access (ROA) model which is described in the Distributed Office Applications Model (DOAM; ISO/IEC 10031, [13] ff.) standard. The DOAM standard also specifies a reference datatype ( Distinguished Object Reference; DOR) that enables data objects to be localized and distinguished globally. When storing a data object in a remote store using the ERP service, a DOR is generated. This DOR can be passed to anyone, worldwide, who is potentially interested in a subsequent access. The receiver of the DOR is able to access the data object utilizing the RDT. The services are implemented using the ISO Development Environment (ISODE, [8,18]). To our knowledge, this is the first realization of the standardized RDT service element. The global reference mechanism was developed at GMD Fokus as part of two distinct multimedia mail projects. Both projects are managed by the De·Te·Berkom GmbH, a consulting company of German Telecom (Deutsche Bundespost Telekom).
