Biphasic response of biological objects on variation of low deuterium concentration in water.

For the first time we study the effects of deuterium for various alive and model biological systems on a wide scale of deuterium concentration including water depleted of deuterium. All the data have statistical significance better than 0.05. Mechanisms of the observed phenomena are discussed.

Hydrogen isotope exchange behavior of protonated lithium metal compounds

The exchange behaviors of hydrogen isotopes between protonated lithium metal compounds and deuterated water or tritiated water were investigated. The various protonated lithium metal compounds were prepared by acid treatment of lithium metal compounds with different crystal structures and metal compositions. The protonated lithium metal compounds could more effectively reduce the deuterium concentration in water compared with the corresponding pristine lithium metal compounds. The H+ in the protonated lithium metal compounds was speculated to be more readily exchangeable with hydrons in the aqueous solution compared with Li+ in the pristine lithium metal compounds, and the exchanged heavier isotopes were speculated to be more stably retained in the crystal structure compared with the light protons. When the tritiated water (157.7 kBq/kg) was reacted with the protonated lithium metal compounds, the protonated lithium manganese nickel cobalt oxide was found to adsorb and retain twice as much tritium (163.9 Bq/g) as the protonated lithium manganese oxide (69.9 Bq/g) and the protonated lithium cobalt oxide (75.1 Bq/g) in the equilibrium state.

Isotopic effects of low concentration of deuterium in water on biological systems

Isotopic effects of deuterium in water are studied in a broad range of concentrations on a number of biological objects of different organization levels. The results obtained show that biological objects are sensitive to variations of isotope composition in water. A decrease or increase in deuterium concentrations in water may cause activation or inhibition of biological functions. The values of biological isotopic effects of low deuterium concentration may even be higher than those of high deuterium concentration. No regularity in response for all the objects studied failed to find out in a range of deuterium concentration in water from 4 ppm to 1%.

Direct determination of deuterium of wide concentration range in water by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Based on quantitative 1H NMR and 2H NMR techniques, a quantitative method of direct determination of deuterium concentration in water was proposed and validated. This is a simple, rapid, and sensitive method, with minimum sample preparation. The detection range of the proposed method was from natural abundance to nearly 100%, thus satisfying multiple analysis requirements.

Yielding ability and quality characteristics of Chinese cabbage in condition of imitation of radiation influence during the space mission to Mars

Chinese cabbage plants, Vesniyanka cultivar, were grown under natural illumination in normal radiation and were placed in condition of periodic y-irradiation produced by the GAMMA-BREEZ source. The irradiation was carried out each 7 days for 4 hours with dose power 5 mSv/h. The summarized dose during all vegetation time was 80 mSv. The root zone of plants was moistened with water containing the different concentrations of deuterium. Radioactive influence on plants did not take effect in yielding abilities and ascorbic acid content in leaves. The reduction of deuterium concentration in water caused the plant productivity was twice as much as before, but otherwise it resulted the active accumulation of nitrates in leaves.

A refinement and evaluation of the isotope dilution method for estimating milk intake by piglets

Piglets (49) were removed from their dams at 1–3 days of age and trained to drink from artificial nipples. Estimates of milk replacer consumption of individual piglets over periods of 1 or 3 days were made by an isotope (deuterium) dilution method and by disappearance. Estimates by isotope dilution averaged 0.4% higher ( P > 0.10) in 1-day periods and 2.9% higher ( P < 0.05) in 3-day periods than estimates by disappearance. Various sources of error were evaluated. The most likely sources of error appear to be in measurement of the dose of deuterium injected (as D 2O) and in the measurement of deuterium concentration in water extracted from blood samples. Milk analyses, except for dry matter, can be eliminated. Measurement of deuterium space at the end of the milk consumption measurement period is not necessary. We conclude that the isotope dilution method for measuring the milk consumption of piglets is acceptably accurate and precise.
