Spatial distribution and determinants of alcohol consumption among pregnant women in Ethiopia: Spatial and multilevel analysis.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a known contributor to teratogen and causes a range of effects on pregnancy and birth outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the spatial variation and determinants of alcohol consumption among pregnant women in Ethiopia. A secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data. A total of 1,135 pregnant women were included in the analysis. ArcGIS version 10.7 software was used to explore the spatial distribution of alcohol consumption, and SaTScan version 9.6 was employed to identify the significant spatial clusters of alcohol consumption. A mixed multi-level logistic regression analysis was employed to identify the determinant factors of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. The result showed that the prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy was 22.49% (with a 95% CI: 18.18 to 26.17). The spatial analysis showed that the spatial distribution of alcohol consumption significantly varied across the country [Global Moran's I value = 0.30 (P<0.001)]. The SaTScan analysis identified two most likely clusters with high rates of alcohol consumption such as northwest Ethiopia (Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) = 155.56, p<0.001) and central Ethiopia (LLR = 19.27, p<0.01). Never in union, divorced and/ widowed [Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.07, 10.14], attended primary school [AOR = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.27, 0.95], having two or more lifetime sexual partners [AOR = 2.59; 95% CI: 1.11, 6.18], living in rural [AOR = 1.52; 95% CI: 1.12, 2.93] and higher community media exposure [AOR = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.28, 0.97] were the factors associated with alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Ethiopia was high. The spatial distribution of alcohol consumption was significantly varied across the country. Therefore, public health interventions targeting areas with high alcohol consumption are needed for drinking cessation and to prevent poor pregnancy outcomes related to alcohol use.

Do non-cognitive skills matter for alcohol consumption? Evidence from Russia

Economic and sociological research that touches upon the determinants of alcohol consumption is mostly centered on the traditional factors of human capital (e.g., education). While much attention is given to education as a valid instrument to reduce alcohol misuse, less is given to the impact of non-cognitive skills. Data are collected from a nationally representative Russian panel survey, 2016–2018. We estimate a random-effects probit model for the probability of abstinence and a random-effects tobit model with a Heckman correction for the volume of alcohol consumption. Non-cognitive skills are consistent predictors of drinking in Russia. In both genders, conscientiousness and extraversion have strong connections to the probability and the volume of alcohol consumption, while openness to experience and neuroticism only affect the volume. The estimates for education differ substantially when the Big Five variables are excluded from the model, which suggests that a major part of the effect of education on alcohol consumption patterns may be mediated through non-cognitive skills. Although educational interventions are often seen as a method of solving excessive drinking problems, introducing personality traits into the analysis raises the question of the effectiveness of such interventions.

Alcohol consumption and its determinants among pregnant women in Gozamin district, Amhara, Ethiopia, 2020.

Objective:Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause many major severe illnesses to both mothers and their offspring. Despite this, many pregnant women consume both homemade and manufactured alcoholic beverages. We conducted this study to assess the prevalence and determinants of alcohol consumption among pregnant women in Gozamin district, Amhara, Ethiopia, in 2020.Methods:Community-based cross-sectional study was employed from 1 to 30 November, 2020. The participants were recruited using a stratified multi-stage sampling technique. A structured and pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire was utilized for data collection. The collected data were entered into Epi-data Version 3.1 and exported to SPSS Version 25 for further analysis. The model fitness was checked by Hosmer and Lemeshow’s goodness of fit test. Then, logistic regression models were considered to determine the associations of independent variables with the outcome variable. Variables with p < 0.25 in bivariable logistic regression were considered for multivariable logistic regression. Finally, variables with p < 0.05 in multivariable logistic regression were considered as determinants of alcohol consumption.Result:A total of 555 pregnant women participated in this study, making the response rate of 97.4%. The prevalence of alcohol consumption among the participants was 45.6% (95% confidence interval = 41.4–49.2). The determinants of alcohol consumption among the participants were highest wealth index (adjusted odds ratio = 3.21; 95% CI = 1.68–6.14), pre-pregnancy alcohol consumption (adjusted odds ratio = 3.67; 95% confidence interval = 2.36–5.71), poor social support (adjusted odds ratio = 3.08; 95% confidence interval = 1.60–5.94), and unplanned pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio = 1.66; 95% confidence interval = 1.04–2.66).Conclusion:In this study, the prevalence of alcohol consumption was high among the pregnant women. Our findings suggest introduction of policies and interventions that can help reduce alcohol consumption during pregnancy. The health education priority should be creation of awareness about the negative health impacts of alcohol on the health of pregnant mothers and their offspring.

Abstract This work analyzes the meanings attributed to alcohol consumption and the care strategies used by an indigenous group in Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) by means ofa qualitative research involving residents and leaders. The results generated three analytical axes: determinants of alcohol consumption, health care settings, and alcohol use in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was found that the use of alcohol in the community has been marked by historical movements that have altered the modes of existence and limited access to traditionally occupied lands. Alcohol consumption appeared as a naturalized phenomenon, associated with social and health problems that are aggravated by the lack of public assistance perceived by the community.

Determinants of Alcohol Consumption among Medical Students: Results from POLLEK Cohort Study

Background: The use of alcohol is a serious public health concern all over the world, especially among young people, including students. Medical students are often exposed to higher levels of distress, which may lead to a higher prevalence of psychoactive substance use and psychiatric co-morbidities. Alcohol abuse can be one of the detrimental methods of coping with distress. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of alcohol use among medical students in Poland. Methods: We analyzed data from the POLLEK cohort study on alcohol consumption and possible influencing factors. Results: Among the 540 students included, 167 (30.9%) were hazardous drinkers (HAZ) according to the AUDIT test. The main identified risk factors of hazardous/harmful drinking were male gender and smoking cigarettes. Conclusions: Given the fairly widespread alcohol abuse among medical students, it is necessary to implement screening (and intervention in the next stage) programs in these groups.

Prevalence and sociodemographic determinants of alcohol consumption among adults living with HIV in Eswatini

Aim: Alcohol consumption contributes to a significant burden of illnesses, health conditions and premature deaths globally. There is limited knowledge of alcohol consumption among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Eswatini. This study sought to determine the prevalence, and examine the sociodemographic determinants of alcohol consumption among adult people living with HIV in Eswatini. Methods: Using the Swaziland HIV Incidence Measurement Survey 2, a recent national representative cross-sectional survey conducted in Eswatini between August 2016 and March 2017, a subsample of 2 832 adults (aged 18 and older) living with HIV was extracted. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the sociodemographic factors associated with alcohol consumption (i.e. use or misuse). Results: The prevalence of alcohol misuse (hazardous drinking) was 10.9% (23% male v 4.5% female), whereas alcohol use (moderate drinking) was estimated at 8.5% (14.7% male v 5.2% female). Men were more likely to engage in alcohol use (adjusted relative risk ratio [aRRR] = 3.46 [95% CI 3.46–6.62]) and misuse (aRRR = 6.12 [95% CI 6.12–11.47]) than females. Those who reported HIV stigma had a higher likelihood of alcohol misuse compared to those who did not report HIV stigma (aRRR = 1.43 [95% CI 1.04–1.98]). Conclusion: Our findings highlight a notable prevalence of alcohol use or misuse among PLWH in Eswatini. Males, those with no education, never married and those who reported HIV stigma were more likely to report alcohol misuse. The study thus recommends innovative policies and strategies to curb alcohol-related harm in the Eswatini population, specifically among PLWH.

Determinants of alcohol consumption and marijuana use among young adults in the Republic of Palau

BackgroundThis study aimed to describe the status of alcohol consumption and drug use among young adults as well as their determinants.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study of 356 young adults (aged 18 to 24 years) living in Palau in 2013. The prevalence of self-reported alcohol and marijuana usage were compared within and between sexes, age groups, ethnicities, and education levels.ResultsThe proportion of current drinking was higher in people aged 21–24 than in those aged 18–20 (73.2% vs. 60.9%, p = 0.09 in men and 48.3% vs. 30.0%, p = 0.02 in women), while that of marijuana use did not differ between the age groups. The proportions of current drinking and marijuana use were higher in Palauan than in other ethnicities (current drinking: 70.6% vs. 40.6%, p = 0.005 in men and 38.8% vs. 16.6%, p = 0.04 in women; lifetime marijuana use: 80.0% vs. 52.9%, p = 0.02 in men and 56.1% vs. 30.6%, p = 0.09 in women). The proportion of frequent (3 times or more) marijuana users was higher for the lower educated than for the higher educated (62.5% vs. 32.1%, p < 0.001 in men and 33.9% vs. 24.4%, p = 0.12 in women).ConclusionsSex, age, ethnicity, and education were significant determinants of alcohol and marijuana use.

Alcohol consumption in early adolescence: Associations with sociodemographic and psychosocial factors according to gender.

IntroductionEarly alcohol consumption can irreversible damage the adolescents’ brain and may affect their quality of life. In order to better prevent such a deleterious behaviour, knowing its determinants is needed. So far, only few studies among adolescents aged <15 years exist, of which the majority failed to include gender differences. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether gender differences in the association between alcohol use and sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics among 10-14-year olds exist.MethodsData came from the 2018 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study conducted in French-speaking schools of Belgium. The sample analysed here comprised 4,364 10-14-year olds from the Walloon Region. Associations of the recent alcohol consumption (at least one glass during the past month) with sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics were estimated using gender-stratified multivariable logistic regression modelling.ResultsPrevalence of early alcohol consumption was 14% (boys: 16%; girls: 12%). Migration status and family affluence scale (FAS) were associated with early alcohol consumption only in boys. Second-generation immigrant boys (vs. natives: OR = 0.66 [0.47–0.92]) and boys from “low” FAS families (vs. “high”: OR = 0.56 [0.32–0.98]) or “medium” FAS (vs. “high”: OR = 0.63 [0.43–0.92]) were less likely to have consumed alcohol in the past month. In both genders, alcohol consumption was positively associated with age and inversely associated with school satisfaction and family support. No association was observed with family structure, peer support and life satisfaction in the multivariable models.ConclusionOur findings showed that gender differences may exist in the determinants of alcohol consumption among young adolescents. They will contribute to the development of public health policies and actions for the most vulnerable adolescents, which should take gender differences into account.

Religiosity, Social Influence, and Drinking Among Iranians

Most traditional interpretations of Islam view alcohol consumption as strictly forbidden and more than a dozen Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, have prohibited alcohol use. Nevertheless, many Muslim residents of these countries continue to consume alcohol. While this paradox merits scholarly attention, little has been done to clarify it. This paper utilizes Iran as a case study to assess the determinants of alcohol consumption and of attitudes towards the Islamic decree on alcohol use among Muslims. To do so, this study uses a survey of 84 Iranians. Utilizing a small non-random sample, this paper serves as an exploratory foray into the topic. Results show that social influence is strongly and positively associated with alcohol use. Identifying as Muslim, however, is not significantly associated with alcohol use. Among different aspects of religiosity, only religious practices is negatively associated with alcohol use. Additionally, those who have higher scores on a scale of spiritual experiences are more likely to believe that alcohol is not forbidden in Islam, while those with higher scores on a religious practice scale are more likely to conform to the conventional view that considers alcohol use forbidden for Muslims. This suggests that researchers should disaggregate Muslim religiosity into different dimensions to explain its relationship with alcohol consumption.

Determinants of Alcohol Consumption in Women Before and After Awareness of Conception.

We examined the socio-demographic and behavioral factors associated with alcohol consumption before and after pregnancy awareness in pregnant women. This cross-sectional study included 91,828 pregnant women in a nationwide Japanese birth cohort study from 2011 to 2014. Alcohol consumption before and after pregnancy awareness, and sociodemographic behavioral characteristics were assessed through self-reported questionnaires. Determinants of alcohol consumption were investigated using logistic regression. Prevalence of alcohol consumption before and after pregnancy awareness was 50.0% and 2.8%, respectively. Most women consumed low to moderate levels of alcohol. Before pregnancy awareness, high educational level (odds ratios [OR] 1.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07 to 1.15), high household income (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.24), and smoking (OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.65 to 1.90) were significantly associated with increased odds of alcohol consumption. After pregnancy awareness, older age (OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.54 to 1.94) and smoking (OR 5.57, 95% CI 4.88 to 6.37) were significantly associated with increased odds of alcohol consumption, and high education level (OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.64 to 0.81) and high household income (OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.63 to 0.89) were significantly associated with decreased odds of alcohol consumption. A half of women consumed alcohol before pregnancy awareness. Guidelines recommend abstinence from alcohol consumption in pregnant women for precaution, although influence of low to moderate levels of prenatal alcohol exposure on the fetus is inconclusive. Social-demographic characteristics differed between women who consumed alcohol before pregnancy awareness and women who continued alcohol after pregnancy awareness.

Alcohol consumption, censorship and misjudgement

ABSTRACTIn the study of the economic determinants of alcohol consumption, there is an under-appreciated issue of sample selectivity as consumption is often not fully observed. Sample selectivity involves ignoring consumption below a censorship cut-off level. This article estimates a demand system for beer, wine and spirits with and without allowance for selectivity. Then using a simulation approach, it examines the impact of misjudgement in the censorship level on the estimated demand parameters. A mean squared error (MSE) criterion is suggested for determining the appropriate censorship level.

Effects of experimental pain induction on alcohol urge, intention to consume alcohol, and alcohol demand.

Research suggests one determinant of alcohol consumption may be physical pain, but there is no empirical evidence that pain has a causal effect on drinking. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to test experimental pain as a determinant of several alcohol consumption proxies: self-reported urge to drink, intention to consume alcohol, and alcohol demand. This study also was designed to test negative affect as a mediator of the effects of pain on alcohol use proxies. We hypothesized that participants randomized to experimental pain induction (vs. no pain) would report greater urge, intention, and alcohol demand, and that these effects would be mediated by increased negative affect. Participants were healthy undergraduates who were moderate-heavy drinkers (N = 61). Experimental pain was induced using a novel capsaicin-heat model intended to approximate key features of clinical pain. Results indicated that participants in the pain condition subsequently endorsed greater urge and intention to drink. Furthermore, these effects were mediated by pain-induced negative affect. We observed no effect of pain on alcohol demand. This is the first study to demonstrate a causal effect of acute pain on urge and intention to drink. Given the close association between alcohol consumption, urge and intention to drink, these findings suggest that pain may influence alcohol consumption, which can have implications for individuals with co-occurring pain and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Specifically, individuals with co-occurring pain and AUD may drink to alleviate pain-related negative affect. Correlates of alcohol consumption among Germans in the second half of life. Results of a population-based observational study

BackgroundSeveral studies have investigated the predictors of alcohol consumption behavior among adolescents and young adults. However, the body of evidence about the relationship between in particular psychological factors and alcohol consumption among individuals in the second half of life is still limited. Hence, we aimed at identifying factors associated with alcohol consumption among individuals aged 40 and above, especially focusing on psychological correlates.MethodsData were derived from a population-based sample of community-dwelling individuals aged 40 to 95 years (n = 7820) in Germany. Alcohol consumption was rated as ‘never’ (never drinkers), ‘rarer than once a month’, ‘one to three times a month’, ‘once a week’, ‘several times a week’ (occasional drinkers), and ‘daily’ (daily drinkers). Socio-economic factors, the illness level and physical activity were considered as possible determinants of alcohol consumption. In addition, positive and negative affect, life satisfaction, optimism, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-regulation were included as psychological factors. Multinomial regressions were used to identify factors associated with drinking behavior.Results12.0% of the individuals were daily drinkers, 76.5% were occasional drinkers, and 11.5% of the individuals never drank alcohol. After adjusting for various potential confounders, multinomial logistic regressions revealed that, compared with never drinking, occasional and daily drinking were positively associated with a decreased loneliness, a higher life satisfaction, a higher positive affect, a higher optimism, a higher self-efficacy (occasional drinkers), a higher self-esteem, and less perceived stress. In addition, occasional and daily drinking were positively associated with less physical illnesses, male gender, and income as compared with never drinking.ConclusionsThe current study extends the existing literature on alcohol consumption behavior by new insights of correlates of drinking behavior among individuals in the second half of life. Since interventions are available to address this risk factor, this might help to identify individuals with increased alcohol consumption.

Early life predictors of high alcohol consumption in middle age

Objective: A number of studies have investigated early life determinants of alcohol consumption in adolescence. In this study, we will investigate early life predictors of high alcohol consumption in middle age. Methods: Data on early life predictors, e.g. alcohol consumption and smoking, was collected from 49,321 Swedish men born 1949–1951 at conscription for military service in 1969/70. Follow-up data on alcohol consumption in the same men was collected from a random sample participating in one of the Swedish Survey of Living Condition in 1988/89, 1996/97 or 2004/05 (N = 146), i.e. at age 37 or later. Odds Ratios (ORs) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs) were estimated in logistic regression analysis for the association between factors measured in late adolescence and high alcohol consumption middle-age. Results: The proportion of high consumers of alcohol increased from late adolescence to middle age. Smoking (OR 2.9, CI95% 1.3–6.2) and low education (OR 2.0, CI95% 1.0–4.0) measured at the conscription examination in late adolescence were associated with high alcohol consumption in middle age. A few other factors measured at the conscription examination, e.g. high alcohol consumption (OR 1.8, CI95% 0.7–4.4), showed elevated ORs but the associations were not significantly increased. Conclusion: Smoking and low education measured in late adolescence were associated with high alcohol consumption in middle age.

Re-examining the economic determinants of alcohol consumption in Canada: controlling for the presence of common correlated effects

ABSTRACTAlcoholic beverages represent both an important source of revenue and a driver of expenditure for provincial governments in Canada. As a result, the pricing of alcoholic beverages has substantial public policy implications. In this context, we re-examine existing work estimating the demand for three classes of alcoholic beverage (beer, wine, and spirits) by controlling for common correlated effects. The results reveal that any conclusions regarding the government’s ability to influence alcohol consumption is sensitive to the assumption that the relationship between the demand for alcoholic beverages and economic variables is identical across provinces.

Personality and alcohol consumption: Pooled analysis of 72,949 adults from eight cohort studies

BackgroundThe role of personality as a determinant of alcohol consumption has long been debated, but prospective evidence is scarce. MethodsWe performed individual participant meta-analysis to examine the association between the Five-Factor Model personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience) and alcohol consumption using data from eight cohort studies sampled from the USA, UK, Germany, and Australia (total n=72,949; mean age=50 years, 54% female). Alcohol consumption was categorized into abstinence, moderate consumption, and heavy consumption. ResultsAfter adjustment for age, sex, and race, higher extraversion (odds ratio for 1 standard deviation's increase in the score; 95% confidence interval: 1.14; 1.01–1.29) and lower conscientiousness (0.89; 0.79–1.00) were associated with increased risk of transitioning from moderate to heavy alcohol consumption over time, and also with heavy alcohol consumption. Lower extraversion (0.91; 0.85–0.98), higher agreeableness (1.09; 1.02–1.15), and lower openness (0.90; 0.86–0.95) were associated with increased odds of transitioning from moderate consumption to abstinence as well as with alcohol abstinence. ConclusionFindings from this individual-participant meta-analysis suggest that high and increasing alcohol consumption is more common among extraverts and those low on conscientiousness whereas high agreeableness and low openness to experience may increase odds of reducing alcohol consumption and preferring abstinence.

Predictors of At-Risk Intoxication in a University Field Setting: Social Anxiety, Demographics, and Intentions

Objective: The determinants of alcohol consumption among university students were investigated in a downtown field setting with blood alcohol content (BAC) as the dependent variable. Participants: In total, 521 participants completed a brief survey and had their BAC assessed during April 2013. Methods: Between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am, teams of researchers recruited passersby at 3 heavy-drinking locations near a university campus. Before the BAC assessment, participants completed a questionnaire regarding their drinking intentions, drinking group, and social anxiety. Results: The average BAC of drinking students was 0.107 g/dL, which was 0.033 g/dL higher than their intended BAC. Males and members of a Greek-life organization consumed significantly more alcohol than their demographic counterparts. A significant positive curvilinear relationship was observed between social anxiety and BAC. Conclusions: University students achieve high levels of intoxication, often exceeding their intended BAC. Social anxiety may be an informative predictor of alcohol consumption in this setting.

Prevalence and determinants of alcohol consumption among adult men in a coastal area of south India

Abstract Introduction Alcohol is the common name given to organic compounds having hydroxyl group linked to a carbon atom. In everyday life, alcohol refers to any beverage containing ethanol or ethyl alcohol. It is available in many forms with beer being the third most popular drink throughout the world next to water and tea. A WHO report [1] states that worldwide per capita con-sumption of alcoholic beverages in 2010 was equal to 6.2 liters of pure alcohol consumed by every person aged 15 years or older. Approximately 2.3 million people die each year from the harmful use of alcohol, accounting for approximately 3.8% of all deaths worldwide. More than half of these deaths occur from noncommunicable diseases including cancers, cardiovascular disease, and liver cirrhosis. Although adult per capita consumption is highest in high-income countries, it is nearly as high in the upper-middle-income countries. An estimated 4.5% of the global burden of disease—as meas-ured in disability-adjusted life years—is caused by harmful use of alcohol.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AND ITS CORRELATES AMONG RESIDENTS OF MINING TOWN, KITWE, ZAMBIA: 2011 POPULATION BASED SURVEY

Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, li ver cirrhosis and cancers. It has also been associated with risky sexual behaviors, hence, attributed as a factor in the increase of HIV incidence and prevalence. A cro ss sectional study was conducted using a modified World Health Organizations Global Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) Surveillance Initiative NCD STEPs 1and 2. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the determinants of alcohol consumption. A total of 1627 individuals participat ed in the survey, of which 42.3% were males. Some 22.3% (36.2% of male and 12.1% of female; p<0.001) participants reported to have consumed alcohol during the 30 days preceding the survey. The factor s considered to be associated with alcohol consumpt ion were age, sex and smoking. Compared to respondents age 25-34 years, respondents of age 35-44 years wer e 38% (AOR = 1.38, 95%CI [1.11, 1.70]) more likely to report having consumed alcohol and those aged 45 years or older were 26% (AOR = 0.74, 95%CI [0.60, 0.93]) less likely to report having consumed alcohol . Female respondents were 47% (AOR = 0.53, 95%CI [0.46, 0.60]) less likely to report consuming alcohol compared to male respondents. Compared to respondents who reported smoking cigarettes, those who did not smoke cigarettes were 51% (AOR = 0.49, 95%CI [0.40, 0.59]) less likely to consume alcohol. The rat e of alcohol consumption is high in this mining town. Factors identified in this study as associated wit h alcohol consumption, i.e., male sex, age, cigarette smoking, should be considered in designing interve ntions to curtail the level of alcohol consumption.
