Implementation of the Hough Transform for Iris Detection and Segmentation

The iris is used as a reference for the study of unique biometric marks in people. The analysis of how to extract the iris characteristic information represents a fundamental challenge in image analysis, due to the implications it presents: detection of relevant information, data coding schemes, etc. For this reason, in the search for extraction of useful and characteristic information, approximations have been proposed for its analysis. In this article, it is presented a scheme to extract the relevant information based on the Hough transform. This transform helps to find primitive geometries in the irises, which are used to characterize each one of these. The results of the implementation of the algorithm of the Hough transform applied to the location and segmentation of the iris by means of its circumference are presented in the paper. Two public databases of iris images were used: UBIRIS V2 and CASIA-IrisV4, which were acquired under the same conditions and controlled environments. In the pre-processing stage the edges are found from the noise elimination in the image through the Canny detector. Subsequently, to the images of the detected edges, the Hough transform is applied to the disposition of the geometries detected.

Expert vs. novice differences in the detection of relevant information during a chess game: evidence from eye movements.

The present study explored the ability of expert and novice chess players to rapidly distinguish between regions of a chessboard that were relevant to the best move on the board, and regions of the board that were irrelevant. Accordingly, we monitored the eye movements of expert and novice chess players, while they selected white's best move for a variety of chess problems. To manipulate relevancy, we constructed two different versions of each chess problem in the experiment, and we counterbalanced these versions across participants. These two versions of each problem were identical except that a single piece was changed from a bishop to a knight. This subtle change reversed the relevancy map of the board, such that regions that were relevant in one version of the board were now irrelevant (and vice versa). Using this paradigm, we demonstrated that both the experts and novices spent more time fixating the relevant relative to the irrelevant regions of the board. However, the experts were faster at detecting relevant information than the novices, as shown by the finding that experts (but not novices) were able to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information during the early part of the trial. These findings further demonstrate the domain-related perceptual processing advantage of chess experts, using an experimental paradigm that allowed us to manipulate relevancy under tightly controlled conditions.

Superior reaction to changing directions for skilled basketball defenders but not linked with specialised anticipation

The purpose of the present study was to examine the timing for the detection of relevant information in the final running direction of attackers' cutting manoeuvres. Skilled basketball players and novices performed sidestep and reach tasks in response to a ready-go choice stimuli using light-emitting diode (LED) task and video stimuli (video task) wherein skilled ball players executed cutting manoeuvres. The time at which the defenders first obtained relevant visual information was estimated by subtracting the visuo-motor processing time, acquired from the reaction time in the LED task, from the reaction time in the video task. Skilled basketball players reacted to and reached towards the target faster than novices, whereas the estimated video cue timings for the skilled players were not different from those for the novices. The results suggest that the anticipation of attacker's direction in this task would be a general visuo-motor skill, even without previous specialised perceptual training. Combined with the results from the reaction performance in the video task, we conclude that novices are afforded shorter times and more uncertain information before their stepping when they are in a one-on-one ballgame defensive scenario because their sidestepping takes a relatively long time.

Detección de indicaciones relevantes en señales de radiofrecuencias de ultrasonido

En la actualidad los Ensayos No Destructivos (END) de materiales por ultrasonido se han convertido en un instrumento de uso cotidiano en la industria por su alto desempeño en la detección de discontinuidades y medición de espesores en materiales metálicos y no metálicos, logrando para las empresas altos índices de aseguramiento y control de calidad. Este artículo presenta los resultados del desarrollo de una herramienta de software que facilita la detección de indicaciones relevantes en las señales de ultrasonido, las cuales están asociadas a señales generadas a partir de interfaces (posibles defectos) presentes en el interior de la pieza inspeccionada, proceso principal en la inspección de materiales por ultrasonido para la detección de defectos.
