Machine learning modeling for the prediction of phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiency and screening of crucial microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants

The effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is largely determined by the microbial community structure in their activated sludge (AS). Interactions among microbial communities in AS systems and their indirect effects on water quality changes are crucial for WWTP performance. However, there is currently no quantitative method to evaluate the contribution of microorganisms to the operating efficiency of WWTPs. Traditional assessments of WWTP performance are limited by experimental conditions, methods, and other factors, resulting in increased costs and experimental pollutants. Therefore, an effective method is needed to predict WWTP efficiency based on AS community structure and quantitatively evaluate the contribution of microorganisms in the AS system. This study evaluated and compared microbial communities and water quality changes from WWTPs worldwide by meta-analysis of published high-throughput sequencing data. Six machine learning (ML) models were utilized to predict the efficiency of phosphorus and nitrogen removal in WWTPs; among them, XGBoost showed the highest prediction accuracy. Cross-entropy was used to screen the crucial microorganisms related to phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiency, and the modeling confirmed the reasonableness of the results. Thirteen genera with nitrogen and phosphorus cycling pathways obtained from the screening were considered highly appropriate for the simultaneous removal of phosphorus and nitrogen. The results showed that the microbes Haliangium, Vicinamibacteraceae, Tolumonas, and SWB02 are potentially crucial for phosphorus and nitrogen removal, as they may be involved in the process of phosphorus and nitrogen removal in sewage treatment plants. Overall, these findings have deepened our understanding of the relationship between microbial community structure and performance of WWTPs, indicating that microbial data should play a critical role in the future design of sewage treatment plants. The ML model of this study can efficiently screen crucial microbes associated with WWTP system performance, and it is promising for the discovery of potential microbial metabolic pathways.

The Design of Sewage Treatment Plant for Agulu Community, Nigeria

There are two basic reasons for the treatment of sewage, reuse and proper control of wastewater and water pollution, and safeguarding the public and environmental health by protecting water supplies and preventing the spread of waterborne diseases. Proper design, and construction together with good operation and maintenance are important authorities. In the present study, a comprehensive design was developed for the units of Inlet chambers for sewage treatment plants, to produce effluents which are satisfying the safe disposal or reuse prescribed by the regulatory, Screen chamber, Grit Removal Unit, sedimentation Tank, Clari-Floculator, Aeration Tank, Sludge Drying Beds, etc. as they are commonly used in the field of wastewater treatment. The plant which is designed to treat 44.625MLD of sewage generated by the inhabitants of Agulu will use as many sustainable and energy-efficient concepts as possible, while still keeping construction and maintenance costs low. The overarching goal of the project which is designed to serve for the next 3 decades is to prevent the contamination of surface water like the Agulu lake and also groundwater, while also providing clean effluent for disposal that can be further treated for consumption.

The main objective of this study is to carry out to design of a sewage treatment plant for a Nagore and Nagore district, because it has been one of the developing pilgrimage places. Due to steady increase of increasing population, there will be more generation of domestic and municipal sewage. Sewage produces obnoxious smell which causes disease to all creatures. To avoid this problem, proper treatments is necessary before disposal to land by not throwing sewage directly to natural resources and reuse the treated water that ultimately reduces the overall demand of fresh water. Its objective is to produce an environmental safe fluid waste and solid waste suitable for disposal or reuse. In one day the total sewage generated was estimated 5 MLD considering the projected population of Nagore town for the next 30 years? Consequently this paper focuses on the sewage generation in the Nagore area based on the population and sewage treatment plant is designed accordingly. It is proposed to design the various components of sewage treatment plant considering the various standards and permissible limits of treated sewage water. The various components of sewage treatment plant are screening, grit chamber, primary sedimentation tank, biological reactor, secondary clarifier, activated sludge tank and drying beds.

Characterization of Sewage Around Eklingpura Village and Design of Sewage Treatment Plant for SGI Hostel Building

The study includes waste water characterization of college hostel building and designing aspect of the sewage treatment plant. The samples of the domestic waste from hostel building were collected at different time intervals of the day in order to have an average data of the measured parameters. The parameters studied include pH, hardness, BOD, DO, TDS, and CO2 samples. The values determined, pH (6.43-6.77), hardness (500-810mg/lit), BOD (1.3-1.5mg/lit), DO (3-5mg/lit), CO2 (.022-.044mg/lit), TDS (600-5100mg/lit). The design parameters of STP of SGI hostel building having treatment units including collection tank, screening chambers, sedimentation tank, aeration tank, receiving tank. The dimensions of the sedimentation tank were 2.75×1.1×0.55m. From the study, it has been concluded that all the parameters that were studied during the project are under the permissible limit. Since all the parameters are under the permissible limit, therefore to design STP, only primary treatment processes (screening, sedimentation, aeration) required.

Design of Sewage Treatment Plants for High-Density Urban Reclamation Land

The success of any coastal reclamation project depends strongly on a sound planning and design practices. Due to the land use limitations, sewage treatment plant (STP) of the reclamation land should be fully studied to save land and reduce its adverse effects on the environment. This research focuses on the selection of biological treatment process for a novel STP, as various pollutants of the sewage can be effectively removed via the biological process. The paper presents a design of the STP implemented in Johor as an example, to achieve the goal of ‘zero discharge’ in the reclaimed wetland. The domestic sewage is treated, recycled and reused in the artificial wetland as an ecological green water to achieve Class IIB standard (effluent quality). The novel STP design comprised of the Immobilized Aerobic Biofilm (BioAX) and Mass Bio System (MBS) was compared against the conventional Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) process. Combination BioAX + MBS process is advantageous due to significantly less land needed, lower power consumption and lower sludge generation. The system was demonstrated as a viable process to treat the sewage wastewater in the reclamation land to meet Class IIB discharge at a lower environmental footprint, saving up to 50 % of the area.

Hydraulic Design of Sewage Treatment Plant for Junagadh Agricultural University Campus

The Junagadh Agricultural University campus is located in Junagadh, which lies in western Gujarat. The human population on the campus is multiplied distinctively due to the establishment of new schools and hostels.The university campus had a population of 1418 in the year 2013 when the supply of water was 152 lit/day per person and the sewage generation was 0.0084 m3/s (725.76 m3/day).Hence, a sewage treatment plant (STP) with suitable capacity is needed to deal with the elevated sewage. The recycled water can be utilized for agricultural purposes. This paper discusses about the design of STP and its major components such as skimming, grit chamber, and screening chamber, active sludge, sedimentation tank and secondary clarifier in the end sludge drying beds. The proposed design is suitable for 0.0672 m3/s sewage and would help to provide58 MLD process capacity. In the end, treated water will have been used for irrigation purpose in the research field of a university.

Metro satellite has become as important complex locality near the place Palasuni of Bhubaneswar. As the city of temples, occupied the top position in the recent survey of 100 smart cities, there will be an increase not only economically but also there will be rise in population along with infrastructural works. So there is a substantial possibility of rise in population in Metro Satellite area of Palasuni. With this steady increase of population, there will be more generation of household and domestic sewage. So there is a basic need of construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant with a view of sufficient capacity to treat the sewage. A sewage treatment plant is quite necessary to receive the domestic and household waste and thus removing the materials which creates harms for general public. Its basic aim or objective is to produce an environmental safe atmosphere by treated effluent or sludge which will be suitable for disposal or reuse. The project mainly deals with design of STP and its stages or components which are responsible for the sewage treatment like screening, grit chamber ,skimming tank, sedimentation tank, secondary clarifier, activated sludge tank and sludge drying beds. The projects covers the various dimensions of components such as which would cover an approximate population of 10000 including every building and complex of the area for a maximum period of time. By the execution of the project the entire sewage of the proposed area can be treated effectively and efficiently. I. Function decomposition

ENERGY-EFFICIENT AND COST-EFFECTIVE SEWAGE TREATMENT USING PHYTORID TECHNOLOGY

The process of design, construction and operation of sewage treatment plant (STP) requires multi-disciplinary approach. Numerous conventional methods are available for design of sewage treatment plants. The process involved in these treatments is either aerobic, anaerobic or combination requiring number of mechanical and electrical items thereby requiring substantial energy. The ever growing need of energy makes the design, operation and maintenance of STP a challenging task. The conventional method of sewage treatment can be made efficient by advanced technologies and intelligent supervision but this in turn increases the total cost. However, root zone technology developed by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute treats the sewage by phytorid plant. It is found from the study carried out on nine STPs at various locations in Pune and Mumbai in Maharashtra (India) that the sewage treatment by phytorid technology uses only 20% of the energy as compared to conventional sewage treatment plants. It is thus concluded that phytorid technology is the future for sewage treatment.

The Bugs Eat the Waste: What Else is There to Know?

New technologies may give rise to new professions, but existing professions may also try to acquire a role in the design of already existing artefacts that are designed by another profession. If they do so successfully, this may trigger technological change. A case study on the design of sewage treatment plants is presented, in which since the beginning of the 20th century microbiological and biotechnological researchers have tried to acquire a larger role at the cost of the traditionally involved civil engineers. The case is analysed with the help of Abbott's conceptual framework for professional competition. Two routes for professional competition that are typical for engineering, but that are not yet distinguished by Abbott, are identified and analysed: the development of new design parameters and the development of new design approaches.

Comparison of the behaviour of selected micropollutants in a membrane bioreactor and a conventional wastewater treatment plant

Micropollutants as pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), residuals of personal care products or endocrine disrupting chemicals are of increasing interest in water pollution control. In this context the removal efficiencies of sewage treatment plants (STPs) are of importance, as their effluents are important point sources for the release of those substances into the aquatic environment. Activated sludge based wastewater treatment is the worldwide prevalently used treatment technique. In conventional plants the separation of treated wastewater and sludge occurs via sedimentation. A new development is the application of membrane technology for this separation step. The studies focus on the influence of the solids retention time (SRT) on the removal efficiency, as the SRT is the most important parameter in the design of STPs. A conventional activated sludge plant (CASP) and a membrane bioreactor (MBR) were operated at different SRTs. The substances selected are the antiepileptic carbamazepine, the analgesics diclofenac and ibuprofen, the lipid regulator bezafibrate, the polycyclic musks tonalide and galaxolide and the contraceptive 17alpha-ethinylestradiole. No significant differences in the removal efficiency were detected. Due to the absence of suspended solids in the MBR effluent, substances with high adsorption potential could be retained to slightly higher amounts.

Carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen and bezafibrate - investigations on the behaviour of selected pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment

Numerous investigations in different European countries observed various pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in notable concentrations in the aquatic environment. Further determinations found the effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to be significant sources for the entry of pharmaceutical residuals to rivers, streams and surface waters. Due to those pathways the knowledge about the elimination of these substances and their behaviour in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is elementary for protection of an intact aquatic environment. Since the sludge retention time (SRT) is the most important parameter for the design of STPs, its influence on the reduction rate of these PhACs in the wastewater treatment process was investigated. To study this influence of the SRT on the elimination of PhACs, lab scale plants have been operated with different sludge retention times. The results of the laboratory experiments have been validated analysing various STPs within a wide capacity range and operating at different SRTs. This report describes the determinations observed on the antiepileptic drug Carbamazepine, the two antiphlogistics and analgesics Diclofenac and Ibuprofen and the lipid regulator Bezafibrate.
