The Use of ICT-Based Interactive Video to Enhance Students’ Engagement and Descriptive Writing Skills

Writing skills are crucial in education, yet many students face challenges with engagement and interest. Given the increasing use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education, exploring innovative approaches to address these issues is important. This study investigated ICT-based interactive video to enhance students' engagement and descriptive writing skills. Conducted with 33 seventh-grade students from a junior high school in Malang, this qualitative study employed classroom observations and analysis of written texts. Data analysis involved categorizing observation records by themes such as student engagement and interaction with the video. Students’ descriptive texts were examined for advancements in clarity, coherence, and creativity and categorized based on these aspects. The findings indicated that after using interactive videos, students’ descriptive writing displayed advancements in the three areas examined, with many students achieving high-quality levels. These results suggest that interactive videos can be a valuable tool for boosting students’ engagement and writing skills. The study highlights the need for incorporating such media into writing instruction. It suggests that further research should explore the refinement of these tools and their application in varied educational settings.

The Effect of Point Illustration Explanation (PIE) Strategy Towards Students' Descriptive Writing at the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 1 Malingping, Lebak-Banten in Academic Year 2023/2024

This study aims to evaluate the Effect of the Point Illustration Explanation (PIE) Strategy on Students' Writing Skills in Descriptive Texts at the Tenth Grade of SMAN 1 Malingping, Lebak-Banten, in the 2023/2024 academic year. The PIE strategy involves using concrete examples, in-depth explanations, and clear illustrations to help students understand and develop their descriptive writing skills. This quantitative study employs a quasi-experimental method with a sample of 74 tenth-grade students divided into an experimental class (using the PIE strategy) and a control class (using the KWL strategy). Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, and analysed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and paired t-tests with SPSS 22. The results indicate a significant effect of the PIE strategy on students' descriptive writing skills, as evidenced by a t-value of -28.066 with df 74 and a two-tailed significance of 0.000, meaning Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In conclusion, the PIE strategy significantly improves the descriptive writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Malingping, enhancing their understanding of descriptive writing structures and techniques, increasing motivation, helping them develop ideas more thoroughly, and improving their ability to present clear and creative descriptions.

Applying Peer Review to Improve Students’ Descriptive Writing Text

This research is conducted to determine whether there is a significant difference in students’ descriptive writing score after being treated using peer review compared to those students who did not get the same treatment. This is a quasi-experimental research design with one group as the experimental and one group as the control. Pre-test and post-test were also administered before and after the 10 times treatment given. The population of this research are all of the seventh-grade students in Bangka Islandy the total 80 students. Meanwhile, 50 students from two different classes were the sample of this research. The result of this research showed that the t-obtained in equal variances assumed 6.353 and the significant (2-tailed) was 0.00. Since t-obtained was higher than t-table (2.02) and the significant (2-tailed) was lower than computation with level significant (0.05), it could be stated that there was a significant difference in post-test between the experimental class and control class. It can be concluded that the using of peer review is able to improve the students’ descriptive writing score significantly.

Students' Descriptive Writing Ability Improvement through Six Thinking Hats Strategy

This research aims to find out whether or not the use of the six thinking hats strategy improves the students’ writing ability. It was conducted by using quantitative research with a quasi-experimental research design. Its’ population was the ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tinambung randomly taken as the sample consisting of 46 students for both the experiment and control class. The research data were obtained by giving descriptive writing tests in the form of pre-and post-test to see the effect of the six thinking hats strategy on the students’ writing improvement and its results were analyzed using the SPSS program. The data analysis resulted that the six thinking hats strategy significantly improved the writing ability of ninth-grade students proved by the mean score of the students’ pre-test in which the experimental class was 44.96 and the control class was 47.39; the mean score of students’ post-test in which the experimental class was 83.26 and the control class was 62.91; the Sig (2 tailed) value is 0.000 < 0.05 meaning that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. These findings conclude that the six thinking hats strategy was able to be used to effectively improve the students’ descriptive writing text.

Improving Students' Descriptive Writing Skills Through Collaborative Writing Using Canva Application

Developing descriptive writing skills equips students with the ability to communicate effectively, enhances their observation and critical thinking abilities, encourages creative expression, and fosters empathy and perspective-taking. These skills are valuable not only in academic settings but also in various personal and professional contexts, allowing students to effectively engage their audience and express themselves with clarity and impact. Thus, students need collaborative learning and appropriate instructional media to develop their descriptive writing perfectly. This study aims to determine whether the collaborative writing method using the Canva application can improve EFL students' abilities in descriptive writing. This study used one group pretest and posttest design involving 32 students at one of the junior high schools in Gresik. The data was collected through pretest and posttest in the form of essays. The results of the paired sample t-test showed a significant value of .000 less than .05, which can be interpreted that there is a significant difference in the students' pretest and posttest. The conclusion obtained that the collaborative writing method using the Canva application can improve students' descriptive writing skills. Teachers can utilize this type of research to effectively instruct pertinent subjects to their students. Additionally, it serves as a source of inspiration for other scholars, encouraging them to delve into more profound investigations.

Improving Student’s Descriptive Writing Skill through Silent Card Shuffle Strategy

This study aims to improve students’ descriptive writing skill by applying Silent Card Shuffle Strategy. The method used this research is action research. The subject was students on semester 3 from Management Class of UPI YPTK Padang. They are chosen because they are learning the English business subject on this semester and have learned simple present tense in previous semester. Writing English Skill is important for Management students for productive skill. One of them is creating the English brochure. English brochure can be as basic media for creating business for management students. Unfortunately, most of them have not master in writing English. So lecturer has chosen Silent Card Shuffle Strategy to improve the student’s English descriptive writing skill. The instruments were used to collect the data were observation, questionnaire, Students’ writing test. Then the qualitative data were grouped based on the indicators. In addition, quantitative data has analyzed by Anggoro Formula. Then the researcher interpreted the data to get the result of this research. The research shows that Silent Card Shuffle Strategy is quite good. It can improve the students ‘English descriptive writing skill. This is evidenced by the score of students’ writing test. It increases from the pretest, cycle I and cycle II. The increasing can be seen from of students ‘mean score on pretest, cycle I and II. The students mean ‘score are 50, 5 on pretest, 67, 7 on cycle I and 83, 8 on cycle 2. Thus, the application of Silent Card Shuffle Strategy can increase the students’ descriptive writing skill.

Error Analysis on Students’ Descriptive Writing

Nur Hidayati, 2023. Error Analysis on Students’ Descriptive Writing at Madrasah Aliyah PMU Sanrobone Takalar Regency. Guided by Syamsiarna Nappu and Erwin Akib. This research focused on students’ errors in writing descriptive text. This study aimed to know the types of error were made by eleventh-grade students at Madrasah Aliyah PMU Sanrobone Takalar Regency academic year 2023/2024 in writing descriptive text and to find out the most students’ dominant error in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted using descriptive quantitative study with case study design as quantitative data used. The population of this research is 18 students. Then the data of the research were collected by using test about writing descriptive text. Based on the data analysis result, students made four types of errors based on surface strategy taxonomy. Those were omission, addition, mis-formation, mis-ordering. Students’ highest error frequency is mis-formation error with 219 total number of errors or (36%) total of errors. Omission error with 112 or (19%) total of errors, addition error with 190 or (32%) total of errors. The lowest frequency of error made by the students is mis-ordering error with 80 or (13%) total of errors.

Developing Descriptive Writing Materials by Using Padlet Application in the Tenth Grade Students at SMK AL Washliyah 3 Medan

The aim of this research is to develop descriptive writing material, determine the validation of descriptive writing material and to increase the effectiveness of descriptive writing material by using the padlet application in teaching writing for class X students at SMK AL Washliyah 3 Medan. The research was carried out using the Development Research method, and the evaluator was an English subject teacher, and the subjects were class X students. Pre-test and post-test were carried out to determine the effectiveness of the results. The pre-test results obtained an average score of 70.15% in the satisfactory category; The post-test results show an average score of 82.15% in the very good category. The process of developing teaching materials includes three aspects of assessment: 1) development of descriptive writing materials; 2) validation of descriptive writing material and; 3) effectiveness of descriptive writing materials. Material expert validation includes content with an average score of 3.15% and percentages 4.35% in the superior category. Feasibility of presenting teaching materials has an average score of 5.67% in the superior category, and linguistic elements have an average score of 4.25% in the superior category. The conclusion shows that the design for developing descriptive text teaching materials using a scientific approach in English subjects is very effective.

"Whisper and Write Game” as Pre-Writing Activity to Enhance Descriptive Writing Proficiency of Indonesian Seventh Graders

Pre-writing is a preparation process before writing where students gather ideas, organize information, and plan their writing so that pre-writing has a significant influence on student writing outcomes. This study aims to analyze the effect of using whisper and write games as students' pre-writing activities on the descriptive writing abilities of the seventh-grade students at MTs Mamba'us Sholihin Gresik. This research uses class action research (CAR). The results showed that the improvement was seen from the cycle I and cycle II learning that had been implemented, comparing between cycle I and cycle II. The increase in learning outcomes was 76.19%, the increase obtained from the evaluation results in the first cycle was 14.28% and the second cycle was 90.47%. the learning outcomes of the last cycle show that the mastery of learning exceeds the KKM of 75%. Based on the results of the study it was explained that the use of whispering and writing as pre-writing activity games can help to understand and improve students' skills in writing descriptive text. and this can be seen from the increase in the percentage of student scores in each cycle. and the application of CAR can help students achieve the KKM target. The author admits that the writing of this research has several limitations. The limitation of this study is the inappropriate timing of the research because many agendas clashed with the school, so it is hoped that further research can adjust the time to be appropriate.

USE OF MIND MAPPING TO IMPROVE DESCRIPTIVE WRITING SKILL

This research was aimed to determine the improve students’ writing skill by using mindmapping to eighth grade students especially in class VIII B of SMP N 7 Surakarta in the2022/2023 academic year. The method used in this research was a Classroom ActionResearch (CAR). The research was conducted in two cycles. The subject was the studentsof SMP N 7 Surakarta in 2022/2023 academic year. This research used test and non-test tocollecting the data. To analize the data, this research used qualitative data and quantitativedata. The qualitative data is consisted of data collection, data reduction, data display,conclusion, and verifying. The quantitative data is consisted of mean score and t-testformula. The result of the research, it can be seen from the mean score of Pre-Test was61.34, Post-Test 1 was 71.21, and Post-Test 2 was 85.28. The t-test value of Cycle I was4.14, and the t-test value of Cycle II was 10.22. The result of the research showed that mindmapping technique can improve the students’ writing skill. It can be seen from the studentswriting achievement. It can be concluded that mind mapping technique can be improvestudents’ writing skill.Keywords: Mind Mapping, Descriptive Writing Skill, Classroom Action Research.

The Effectiveness of Marathon Technique in Improving Students' Descriptive Writing

This research was aimed to investigate whether or not Marathon technique gave impact on students’ descriptive writing improvement. This research applied quantitative method with quasi-experimental research design. A total of 40 students of grade 9 of MTs Al-Islamiyah, Ciledug, participated as the samples in which 20 students were in the experimental class and the other 20 in controlled class. Both pretest and posttest were used as the instruments to collect the data. These data were analyzed statistically by using paired-sample t-test. The results of this statistical calculation showed that (t0) > than (tt) = 2.81 > 1.76 in the significance level of 5%. This explained that there was significant difference gained by groups of students taught with and without using Marathon technique. Therefore, this research concluded that Marathon technique affected students’ descriptive text writing achievement.

Improving Text Descriptive Writing Skills In Middle-School Students: Investigating Image Media

This research aims to improve students' skills in writing descriptive text through the use of image media for class VII students at SMPN Satap Lelumpang. The low pre-test results of students are caused by teachers still using conventional methods of teaching writing. So the researchers decided to use a new method that had never been used before, namely using image media. The research carried out was classroom action research in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was carried out at SMPN Satap Lelumpang, with the research subjects being class VII students. Data collection techniques include written tests and observation sheets. The results of research using image media show a significant increase. This can be seen from the students' learning results: in Cycle I, the average score was 4.87 in the poor category, increasing to 8.32 in the good category in Cycle II. The completeness of learning outcomes increased from 48.1% in Cycle I to 92% in Cycle II. This shows that students' skills in writing descriptive text increase through the use of image media.

Improving The Descriptive Writing Skill Through Outdoor Class Learning

In this research, the researchers used Outdoor Class Learning to overcome the students’ problem in descriptive writing. The researchers designed the research problem as: (1) How the process of teaching descriptive writing through Outdoor learning in the classroom is, and (2) How the Outdoor learning can improve the students’ writing skill. The researchers used mastery learning to analyze the score and the result in cycle I is 65.1%. It is still under average. So, the researchers continued the cycle II and the result of students’ score is 75.5%. The result is upper of average target that is 70 %. Finally, Outdoor class learning is effective in teaching English descriptive writing. Outdoor class learning is required in teaching writing especially descriptive writing. It can improve students’ writing skill on descriptive text.

A Corpus-based Analysis of Ten Most Frequently Used Part-of-speech Constituents in Descriptive Writing

This study is set to examine variation in the use of Part-of-Speech (POS) constituents in the contents of descriptive writing by Nigerian undergraduates using a corpus-based approach. The objective is to identify the ten most-frequently-used POS constituents they used. It also aims to identify the level of frequency variation and distribution patterns of the POS constituents used based on gender and ethnic groups. This study adopted the EAP theory and the usage-based theory. The method applied is quantitative descriptive research design and the samples include thirty (30) Nigerian undergraduates that were identified via purposive sampling. The corpus is subjected to a computer-assisted corpus analysis (CACA) where 33, 274 words were tagged and compiled. The findings revealed NN, NN1, II, AT, JJ, TO, NN2, RR and CC as the student’s ten most frequently-used POS constituents, as they achieve higher frequencies. In terms of gender variation, the findings revealed that males achieved a higher frequency of the words used, as equated with females, even though the level of variation at 0.90% is below the statistical level of significance. Also, in terms of their ethnic groups, no significant level of variation was identified, although the Igbo attained a high frequency of words-usage compared to the Yorùbá and the Hausa. Among the theoretical implications derived in this study are the deployments of the corpus-based, genre-based, EAP and ESP-oriented approaches into Nigerian ESL classroom activities.

Project-based Learning to Promote High School Students Descriptive Writing

In high school, EFL learners are supposed to have the capability of writing a good descriptive text as one of the demand of the curriculum. However, many students still experience problems in producing a successful writing. This study aims at promoting high school students’ writing skills, particularly in writing descriptive text, by utilizing project-based learning. This study employed a Classroom Action Research through two cycles which include planning, acting, observing, and evaluating stages. The data were collected from 23 students of X IIS 4 class of SMA Negeri 4 Takalar as the study subjects by using writing tests and observation. The results of the study show that there was an improvement in students’ scores and behaviour when learning with project-based approach. In the diagnostic test, the students mean score was 65.57. The score improved by 9.9% in cycle I and 13.81% in cycle II to 72.09 and 82.04, respectively. Besides, in the pretest, only five students who can achieve the minimum completeness criteria, but in the end of cycle 2, twenty students can pass the minimum score. In addition, students become more actively engaged in the learning process as they are enthusiastic with the projects given by the teacher. This means that the use of project-based learning gave positive impact to students’ learning to write descriptive paragraphs and teachers are suggested to use it in teaching in EFL writing classrooms.

Utilizing Visual Literacy Competence as a Strategy in Teaching Descriptive Writing

Utilizing visual literacy competence, a strategy is very helpful in order to make students’ feel better in writing a descriptive paragraph, since, it is help students to develop their idea, thinking and imaging a vocabulary use and having an organization of idea come up into their mind. The purpose of this paper is to know the effectiveness of utilizing visual literacy competence as a strategy in teaching descriptive paragraph writing, and to know the students’ perception toward utilizing visual literacy competence as a strategy in teaching descriptive paragraph writing. Mixed method used in this research. The result came from the test given in one-group-pretest and posttest, and qualitative data from the questionnaire given to 22 students of Vocational High School students. It can be drawn that the efficiency of using visual literacy in the classroom to teach students how to write descriptive paragraphs, as well as the attitudes of the students toward the use of visual literacy in the classroom to teach students how to write descriptive paragraphs. Most of students are agreed to utilize visual literacy as strategy in teaching descriptive paragraph writing is really effective to use.

Developing Descriptive Writing Graphic Organizers’ of the Students at the Eighth Grade of SMP Swasta Kristen Agios Nikolaus in 2022/2023

Based on the preliminary data, it was found that students in SMP Swasta Kristen Agios Nikolaus were still unable to write descriptive texts. This is because the media used by the teacher is only in the form of a table on a piece of paper and is less interesting. This research aims to develop a learning media in writing descriptive text in the form of Graphic Organizers (GOs). The method used in this research is Research and Development (R & D) using the ADDIE model. There are several procedures in the ADDIE model, namely: 1) Analysis, 2) Design, 3) Development, 4) Implementation, 5) Evaluation. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the graphic organizers media were declared "very feasible" after being validated by media experts and linguists with a percentage of 93%. Graphic organizers media were also tested on students through three stages, namely individual trials with 4 students, small group trials with 10 students and field trials with 20 students and the results obtained that graphic organizers media were "very practical" used by students in writing description text with a percentage of 89%. And from the results of the student test, it was found that the average score of students as a whole was 87%. In other words, graphic organizers media is effective to improve students' ability in writing descriptive text. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that GOs media is very valid, very practical, and effective to be used by students in SMP Swasta Kristen Agios Nikolaus, especially in writing descriptive text.
