Does Parasympathetic Nervous System Activity Exacerbate Depressive Symptoms in College Students Who Experienced Parent-Child Separation? A Longitudinal Examination.

Childhood separation caused by parental migration increases the risk of suffering depressive symptoms among college students. However, most studies in this field have focused on environmental factors and largely ignored the role of physiological reactivity to stress (e.g., parasympathetic nervous system activity) in this process. The present study examined the long-term effects of the parent-child separation experience on depressive symptoms in college students, and explored the moderating role of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity in these relationships. The participants were 242 college students (Mage = 18.74 years, SD = 0.79; 32.2% male), including 149 college students who experienced parent-child separation and 93 college students without this experience. Using a three-wave longitudinal design, participants completed the measures of the parent-child separation experience, PNS activity (measured via respiratory sinus arrhythmia, RSA), and depressive symptoms at Time 1 (T1, before the COVID-19 lockdown). Their depressive symptoms were again measured at Time 2 (T2, during the COVID-19 lockdown) and Time 3 (T3, after the COVID-19 lockdown). The results showed that the parent-child separation experience positively predicted depressive symptoms in college students at three time points. Moreover, the parent-child separation experience positively predicted depressive symptoms at T2 among males with less and average RSA suppression but positively predicted depressive symptoms at T2 among females with greater RSA suppression. These findings indicate a long-term effect of parent-child separation on depressive symptoms in college students that still exist after they entered university, and that the effect varies depending on PNS activity and gender.

Time spent on social media and depressive symptoms in university students: The mediating role of psychoactive substances.

Although some studies have related social media use and depressive symptoms, little is known about the role of psychoactive substance use in this relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the association between time spent on social media (TSSM) and depressive symptoms and to examine whether this relationship is mediated by psychoactive substances in students. Our cross-sectional analysis included a sample of students from a university in a large city in southern Brazil. The TSSM and tobacco frequency of consumption were self-reported. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire. Alcohol and illicit drug-related risks were assessed with the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. Hayes's PROCESS macro was used for mediation analyses, adjusted for age, sex, body mass index and physical activity. A total of 3161 students were included, of which, 69.0% reported moderate to severe depressive symptoms. The association between TSSM and depressive symptoms was statistically significant and partially mediated by tobacco consumption (indirect effect [IE] = 0.05; 95% CI: 0.02-0.08), alcohol-related risk (IE = 0.19; 95% CI: 0.14-0.25), and illicit drug-related risk (IE = 0.08; 95% CI: 0.05-0.12). Our data suggest a direct relationship between TSSM and depressive symptoms, with a partial mediation effect of psychoactive substance use. This study highlights the importance that public health initiatives aimed at preventing depressive problems in young adults should focus not only on TSSM, but also on controlling and reducing psychoactive substance use.

The Relationship Between Stressful Life Events and Depressive Symptoms in College Students: mediation by Parenting Style and Gender's Moderating Effect.

Stressful life events have a significant impact on the mental health of college students. Depression, as a prevalent psychological issue, has garnered attention in the field of college student mental health and is closely linked to it. Additionally, parenting style is identified as an important factor influencing the development of college students' mental health. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between these three factors. A total of 8079 first-year college students from two medical universities in Shandong Province, China were surveyed. The Beck Depression Inventory was utilized to evaluate depressive symptoms among the college students, while the Adolescent Self-rating Life Events Checklist and the Egna Minnen Beträfande Uppfostran were employed to gather data. Subsequently, the SPSS macro program PROCESS was utilized to analyze both the mediating and moderating effects. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0. The study found a detection rate of 6.3% for depressive symptoms among college students. The correlation analysis of this study showed that the stressful life events of college students were significantly positively correlated with depressive symptoms (r=0.261, p< 0.01). Each dimension of parenting style was associated with depressive symptoms in different degrees and directions. At the same time, parenting styles of all sizes play a partial mediating role between stressful life events and depressive symptoms in college students, gender plays a crucial regulatory role in this mediation. Stressful life events experienced by college students have a significant impact on their mental health. Early intervention through positive parenting styles from parents may prove to be beneficial in promoting the development of good mental health among college students.

Latent profile analysis of depressive symptoms in college students and its relationship with physical activity

ObjectiveTo explore the classification of depressive symptoms in college students and the relationship between those symptoms and physical activity. MethodsA convenience sampling method was employed to enlist college students from Songjiang University Town in Shanghai to complete in the General Information Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Physical Activity Scale-3. ResultsA total of 3541 students were analyzed, averaging 19.34 years of age with a male composition of 53 %. The participants can be classified into four categories, namely: Group 1, which exhibits the most severe depressive symptoms, including suicidal ideation and cognitive symptoms (11.07 %); Group 2, which only manifests cognitive symptoms without suicidal ideation (14.35 %); Group 3, which presents mild depressive symptoms (23.61 %); and Group 4, consisting of normal college students (50.97 %). Students with strained family and interpersonal relationships, high levels of academic stress, and low frequency of social activities were at higher risk for detecting suicidal intention and cognitive symptoms. The level of physical activity was significantly higher in the normal group than in the other groups (all P < 0.001), and only the frequency of exercise was significantly different among the remaining three groups (χ2 = 14.716, P = 0.005). The detection rate of cognitive symptoms was significantly lower when exercising >3 times per week for 30–59 min (OR = 0.740, 95 % CI: 0.590–0.928; OR = 0.596, 95 % CI: 0.427–0.831).The detection rate of suicidal thoughts was significantly lower when exercising 2 times per month to 2 times per week or >3 times per week (OR = 0.585, 95 % CI: 0.404–0.847; OR = 0.392, 95 % CI: 0.258–0.595). ConclusionSuicidal ideation and cognitive symptoms can differentiate between various categories of depressive symptoms among college students. Engaging in physical activity serves as a protective factor against depressive symptoms among college students.

Associations of problematic smartphone use with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in university students before and after the COVID-19 outbreak: A meta-analysis

Background and aimProblematic smartphone use (PSU) has been suggested to present with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation (SI) as well as sleep disturbance, lack of social support, and emotional isolation. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between PSU with depressive symptoms and SI in university students, and to determine the potential influence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. MethodsObservational studies pertinent to our research were identified through comprehensive searches of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. To account for potential heterogeneity, the random-effects models were employed to aggregate the findings. ResultsEighteen datasets from 17 case-control studies, including 24,019 university students, were included. Among them, 8,775 (36.5 %) had PSU. A higher prevalence of depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR]: 2.40, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 2.19 to 2.63, p < 0.001; prediction interval: 1.95 to 2.96) was observed in university students with higher scores for PSU measures. A subgroup analysis showed a stronger association between PSU and depressive symptoms after the COVID-19 outbreak as compared to that before the outbreak (OR: 2.76 versus 2.16, p for subgroup difference = 0.002), which explained the heterogeneity. The association between PSU and depressive symptoms in university students was similar to those reported in studies from China and other countries, and in studies with different quality scores. Finally, a meta-analysis of three studies suggested that PSU was also associated with the prevalence of SI (OR: 2.18, 95 % CI: 1.77 to 2.68, p < 0.001; I2 = 0 %). ConclusionIn university students, PSU may be a risk factor for depressive symptoms and SI, and the association between PSU and depressive symptoms became stronger after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Relationship between physical activity and specific working memory indicators of depressive symptoms in university students.

The detection rate of depression among university students has been increasing in recent years, becoming one of the main psychological diseases that endangers their physical and mental health. According to statistics, self-harm and suicide, for which there is no effective intervention, are the second leading causes of death. To explore the relationship between different elements and levels of physical activity and college students' depression-symptom-specific working memory indicators. Of 143 college students were analyzed using the Beck Depression Self-Rating Scale, the Physical Activity Rating Scale, and the Working Memory Task. There was a significant difference between college students with depressive symptoms and healthy college students in completing verbal and spatial working memory (SWM) tasks correctly (all P < 0.01). Physical Activity Scale-3 scores were significantly and positively correlated with the correct rate of the verbal working memory task (r = 0.166) and the correct rate of the SWM task (r = 0.210) (all P < 0.05). There were significant differences in the correct rates of verbal and SWM tasks according to different exercise intensities (all P < 0.05) and different exercise durations (all P < 0.05), and no significant differences in the correct rates of verbal and SWM tasks by exercise frequency (all P > 0.05). An increase in physical exercise among college students, particularly medium- and high-intensity exercise and exercise of 30 min or more, can improve the correct rate of completing working memory tasks.

Problematic social media use, satisfaction with life, and levels of depressive symptoms in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic: Mediation role of social support

The aim of the study was to investigate whether social support might mediate the relationship between problematic social media use (PSMU) and satisfaction with life, and depressive symptoms. The participants of this study consisted of 579 university students ranging in age between 1738 years (M = 21.66, SD = 3.06). Participants completed the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. The results showed that the majority of participants (78.1%) spent an increasing time on social media owing to COVID-19. PSMU significantly predicted satisfaction with life, depressive symptoms, and social support. Social support predicted significantly both satisfaction with life and depressive symptoms. Results of the mediation analysis revealed that a pathway in which social support mediates the relationships between the PSMU and depressive symptoms and satisfaction with life is possible. These results suggest that social support may be an important psychological mechanism that mitigates the influence of PSMU on mental health.

Associations between mobile phone addiction and depressive symptoms in college students: A conditional process model

Depression is a prominent mental health problem facing college students today. Mobile phone addiction is a potential factor that may affect depression. However, the precise relationship between mobile phone addiction and depression is still unclear, which limits the optimization and further application of intervention programs aimed at alleviating mobile phone addiction. Previous studies have shown that poor sleep quality can significantly increase depressive symptoms. According to the “theory of diathesis-stress”, neuroticism as a susceptibility quality can affect the occurrence of depression. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how sleep quality and neuroticism may influence the relationship between mobile phone addiction and depressive symptoms. These relationships were studied in 850 Chinese college students by building a conditional process model, which involved mobile phone addiction as the focal predictors, depressive symptoms as the outcome, sleep quality as the mediator, and neuroticism as the moderator. Correlational analyses indicated that both mobile phone addiction and depressive symptoms were significantly and negatively associated with sleep quality, and mobile phone addiction was significantly and positively associated with depressive symptoms. Additionally, sleep quality mediated the association between mobile phone addiction and depressive symptoms. Moreover, a neurotic personality respectively moderated the relationships between mobile phone addiction and depressive symptoms, and between sleep quality and depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that intervention in mobile phone addiction and improvement of sleep quality are potentially effective means to directly or indirectly prevent symptoms of depression. This study provides a basis for predicting individual differences in response to reducing the risk of depression among college students.

Construction of a resting EEG-based depression recognition model for college students and possible mechanisms of action of different types of exercise

ObjectivesTo investigate the method of resting EEG assessment of depressive symptoms in college students and to clarify the relationship between physical activity level and depressive symptoms in college students.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional study design, 140 current full-time college students were recruited to complete the Self-Rating Depression Scale and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and 10-min resting EEGs were obtained.Results1) The power values of δ and α2 in the central (C3, C4) and parietal (P3, P4) regions of depressed college students were significantly higher than those of normal college students. And the degree of lateralization of δ, θ, α1, and α2 in the prefrontal regions (F3, F4) of depressed college students was significantly higher than that of normal college students (all P < 0. 008). 2) The recall rate of the depression recognition model for college students based on resting EEG was 66.67%, the precision was 65.05%, and the AUCs of the training group and validation group were 0.791 and 0.786, respectively, with better detection effects. 3) The two indicators, δ (C3 + C4) and α1 (F4-F3), are significantly correlated with IPAQ scores, and among college students who engage in ball games most commonly, those with a higher level of physical activity have lower δ (C3 + C4) and higher α1 (F4-F3), while among those who engage in resistance training most commonly, higher levels of physical activity are associated with lower δ (C3 + C4).ConclusionThe resting EEG of depressed college students has a certain specificity that can objectively assess the risk of developing depressive symptoms in college students. Physical activity is associated with abnormal EEG signals of depressive symptoms. Different types of physical activity may modulate the relationship between physical activity levels and EEG indicators.

Correlation and pathways of behavioral activation systems mediating physical activity level and depressive symptoms among college students.

Depression is a common mental disorder among college students. The main symptoms include being persistent low mood, sad emotional experiences, lack of pleasure, listlessness, and impaired cognitive function accompanied by tendencies of self-harm and suicide. To clarify the pathways and effects of the behavioral activation system between physical activity and depressive symptoms in college students with depressive symptoms. This cross-sectional research screened 3047 college students. Of these, 472 had depressive symptoms, with a depression detection rate of 15.49%. Furthermore, 442 college students with depressive symptoms were analyzed. A one-way analysis of variance and Pearson's correlation, linear regression, and structural equation modeling analyses were used to explore the correlations and pathways of the interactions between the variables. Depressive symptoms were significantly negatively correlated with physical activity (r = -0.175, P < 0.001), the behavioral activation system (r = -0.197, P < 0.001), and drive (r = -0.113, P = 0.017). Furthermore, it was negatively correlated with fun-seeking (FS) (r = -0.055, P = 0.251); however, it was not significant. Physical activity was significantly positively correlated with reward responsiveness (RR) (r = 0.141, P = 0.003) and drive (r = 0.124, P = 0.009) and not significantly positively correlated with FS (r = 0.090, P = 0.058). The mediating effect of RR between physical activity and depressive symptoms was significant [B = -0.025, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): -0.051 to -0.008, P = 0.001]. The direct and total effects of physical activity on depressive symptoms and were significant (B = -0.150, 95%CI: -0.233 to -0.073, P < 0.001; B = -0.175, 95%CI: -0.260 to -0.099, P < 0.001), respectively. As physical activity levels increased, depression scores among college students decreased. The mediating effect of RR between physical activity and depressive symptoms was significant. Therefore, colleges and universities should encourage college students with depression to increase their physical activity and improve their behavioral activation system. Particular attention should be paid to RR, which may reduce the prevalence of depressive symptoms.

Correlation of exercise participation, behavioral inhibition and activation systems, and depressive symptoms in college students

To clarify the pathways and effects of the behavioral inhibition and activation systems in the relationship between exercise participation and depressive symptoms among college students. A cross-sectional research design was employed to survey 2606 college students using physical activity questionnaires, the Behavioral Inhibition/Activation Systems Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Data were analyzed using methods including one-way ANOVA, independent sample t-tests, non-parametric tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling. Depressive symptoms were significantly negatively correlated with exercise participation (r = − 0.107, P < 0.001), reward responsiveness (r = − 0.201, P < 0.001), drive (r = − 0.289, P < 0.001), and fun seeking (r = − 0.102, P < 0.001), and positively correlated with behavioral inhibition (r = 0.084, P < 0.001). Exercise participation was positively correlated with reward responsiveness (r = 0.067, P = 0.001), drive (r = 0.085, P < 0.001), and fun seeking (r = 0.063, P = 0.001). Exercise participation had a significant direct effect (B = − 0.079, 95% CI − 0.116 to − 0.043) and total effect (B = − 0.107, 95% CI − 0.148 to − 0.069) on depressive symptoms. The mediating effects of drive (B = − 0.028, 95% CI − 0.043 to − 0.016) and fun seeking (B = 0.005, 95% CI − 0.001 to 0.011) were significant. The more college students engage in exercise, the lower their depressive symptom scores. Drive and fun seeking mediate the relationship between college students' exercise participation and depressive symptoms. Encouraging exercise participation among college students and enhancing their sensitivity to behavioral activation strategies and reward information may have a significant role in preventing and alleviating depressive symptoms.

Interactive effects of sleep and physical activity on depression among rural university students in China.

Decreased sleep quality and physical activity among university students have become important concerns, while depressive symptoms are on the rise, especially in rural areas. Previous studies have confirmed the association between sleep quality and physical activity and depressive symptoms, but the effect of their interaction on depressive symptoms has been less studied. For this reason, the present study analyzed the interaction between sleep quality and physical activity on depressive symptoms to provide reference and assistance for mental health promotion and intervention for university students in rural areas of China. In this study, we investigated sleep quality, physical activity, and depressive symptoms in 11,423 university students in rural areas of China. The association of sleep quality and physical activity with depressive symptoms was analyzed by using univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis. And further analyzed the association between the interaction effect of sleep quality and physical activity and depressive symptoms. The proportion of university students with depressive symptoms in rural China was 33.3%, with a higher proportion of girls students (36.7%) having depressive symptoms than boys students (28.8%). Logistic regression analysis of the interaction between sleep quality and physical activity and depressive symptoms in university students showed that university students with poor sleep quality and MVPA>60 min/d (OR = 4.40,95% CI: 3.75-5.05) had the highest risk of depressive symptoms (p < 0.001). University students with moderate sleep quality and MVPA of 30-60 min/d (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.75-1.61) had the lowest risk of depressive symptoms (p < 0.001). Moreover, there was no gender difference in this result. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was higher among university students in rural areas of China. There was an interaction between sleep quality and MVPA on depressive symptoms, maintaining a good quality of sleep and an appropriate length of MVPA has a contributory effect on mental health, and the same trend was found for both boys and girls students. It is recommended that university students in rural areas of China should first maintain proper sleep quality while maintaining 30-60 min of MVPA per day, which may reduce the risk of depressive symptoms.

Association of Screen Time with Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in College Students During COVID-19 Outbreak in Shanghai: Mediation Role of Sleep Quality.

The study aimed to investigate the associations between different types of screen time (ST) and anxiety and depressive symptoms in college students during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Shanghai, China; the potential mediation role of sleep quality was also examined. A total of 1,550 college students completed an online survey in May 2022. ST, Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) score, Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) score, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, and physical activity were self-reported. Multiple linear regression and mediation analysis were conducted. The results showed that more time spent in TV/movie viewing (>2 h/day) and recreational reading (>1 h/day) was associated with higher levels of anxiety, while more time spent in online social media (>2 h/day) was associated with a higher level of depressive symptoms. In contrast, time spent in online social media (1-2 h/day) was associated with a lower level of anxiety. Meanwhile, recreational reading (2-3 h/day) had a significant indirect effect on anxiety and depressive symptoms through sleep quality. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the associations of ST with anxiety and depressive symptoms varied by the type of screen viewing in college students. The associations of slightly excessive time spent on recreational reading with higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms were partially mediated by sleep quality.

How does change in leisure-time physical activity influence the growth trajectory of depressive symptoms in college students?

Objectives: This longitudinal study was designed to examine the growth trajectory of depressive symptoms among early-stage college students and how the development of vigorous, moderate, and light leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) was related to the growth trajectory. Participants: Four hundred and eighty-eight first- and second-year undergraduate students completed measures of depressive symptoms and LTPA at the beginning, middle, and end of a semester. Methods: Latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM) was conducted. Results: On average, students reported mild levels of depressive symptoms with significant variability at the semester start, but the symptoms elevated over time. LGMM identified two trajectories: low/gradual (75.8%) and high/increasing (24.2%). For both groups, neither vigorous nor moderate LTPA development predicted the growth trajectory of depressive symptoms. However, the change of light LTPA was negatively and significantly associated with the growth trajectory. Even when controlling for covariances, increased light LTPA still had a unique effect on buffering depressive symptoms. Conclusion: There is great potential in targeting comprehensive LTPA strategies to improve college students’ mental health and promote an active lifestyle.

The Ripple Effect: Unveiling the Bidirectional Relationship Between Negative Life Events and Depressive Symptoms in Medical Cadets.

Previous studies have explored the relationship between negative life events and depression, but little is known about the bidirectional relationship between negative life events and depression, particularly in specific groups of medical cadets. This study aimed to explore the relationship between negative life events and depressive symptoms among medical cadets during their four years of college. An analysis of 4-wave longitudinal data collected from 2015-2018 was conducted using a cross-lagged panel network (CLPN) model to explore the complex causal relationship between negative life events and depressive symptoms in medical cadets (N=433). We found differences in negative life events and depressive symptoms among medical cadets across four network models over four years of university. Nodes A-21, A-20, A-23 and A-24, and depressive symptoms D-6 showed greater lagged effect values. Our findings suggest that there is a lagged and mutually causal interaction between negative life events and depressive symptoms in medical cadets over 4 years of college, but that the predictability of negative life events is more important. However, more attention needs to be paid to the predictive role of depressive symptoms, especially those in early life which are often overlooked. Our study provides new insights into the relationship between negative life events and depressive symptoms in university students and helps to refine strategies for prevention and intervention of depression.

Perfectionism, Academic Stress, Rumination and Worry: A Predictive Model for Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in University Students From Colombia

Perfectionism, academic stress, worry, and rumination are associated with increased levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms in university students. However, associations between these variables have been explored separately. Using PLS-SEM, the present study explored a multivariate model in which these variables interplay to predict affective symptoms. A sample of 403 students between ages 18 and 29 years from 55 Colombian institutions of higher education participated by completing Zung depression and anxiety scales, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Inventory of Academic Stress, the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, and the Ruminative Responses Scale. Results indicate a positive relationship between perfectionism and academic stress, and a mediation effect of worry and rumination in the relationship between academic stress and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Findings provide evidence of a novel model that precedes the design of target prevention and intervention programs pointing to reduce the risk of affective disorders and its associated negative consequences.

Moderators and mediators of change of an internet-based mindfulness intervention for college students: secondary analysis from a randomized controlled trial.

Existing evidence suggests internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) improve depressive symptoms in college students effectively. However, there is far less knowledge about the potential mechanisms of change of mindfulness-based IMIs, which could contribute to optimizing target groups and interventions. Hence, within this secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT), potential moderators and mediators of the effectiveness of the IMI StudiCare Mindfulness were investigated. Moderation and mediation analyses were based on secondary data from a RCT that examined the effectiveness of the 7-module IMI StudiCare Mindfulness in a sample of college students (intervention group: n = 217; waitlist control group: n = 127). Assessments were collected before (t0; baseline), 4 weeks after (t1; during intervention), and 8 weeks after (t2; post-intervention) randomization. Longitudinal mediation analyses using structural equation modeling were employed, with depressive symptom severity as the dependent variable. For moderation analyses, bilinear interaction models were calculated with depressive symptom severity and mindfulness at t2 as dependent variables. All data-analyses were performed on an intention-to-treat basis. Mediation analyses showed a significant, full mediation of the intervention effect on depressive symptom severity through mindfulness (indirect effect, a*b = 0.153, p < 0.01). Only the number of semesters (interaction: β = 0.24, p = 0.035) was found to moderate the intervention's effectiveness on depressive symptom severity at t2, and only baseline mindfulness (interaction: β = -0.20, p = 0.047) and baseline self-efficacy (interaction: β = -0.27, p = 0.012) were found to be significant moderators of the intervention effect on mindfulness at t2. Our results suggest a mediating role of mindfulness. Moderation analyses demonstrated that the intervention improved depressive symptom severity and mindfulness independent of most examined baseline characteristics. Future confirmatory trials will need to support these findings. The trial was registered a priori at the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform via the German Clinical Studies Trial Register (TRN: DRKS00014774; registration date: 18 May 2018).

The Relative Importance of Internal Cognitive Processes in Explaining Depressive Symptoms in University Students

ABSTRACT Depression is a common reason university students seek counseling. Various internal cognitive processes are risk factors for college students’ depression (e.g., anxiety, stress level, inability to manage stressors, brooding rumination, and self-deprecating thoughts). We used dominance analyses to determine the relative contribution of each internal cognitive process in explaining depressive symptoms, which process was most important, and whether any process completely dominated other processes. Self-report data were collected from 5,033 ethnically-diverse university students (18-25 years). Women (compared to men) reported significantly higher depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress level, inability to manage stressors, brooding, and self-deprecation. The combination of internal cognitive processes accounted for substantial variance in depressive symptoms in women and men. Each internal cognitive process made unique contributions, although complete dominance was not found. The order of relative contribution from most important to least important follows: generalized anxiety, inability to manage stressors, self-deprecation, stress level, and brooding rumination.

Longitudinal associations among smartphone addiction, loneliness, and depressive symptoms in college students: Disentangling between– And within–person associations

BackgroundSmartphone addiction and depressive symptoms are two prevalent and highly correlated problems among college students worldwide. However, the causal relationships and potential mechanisms (e.g., loneliness) between them remain controversial. Thus, the present study investigated the dynamic longitudinal relations between smartphone addiction and depressive symptoms including loneliness as a possible mediator in Chinese college students. MethodsA total of 3,827 college students (52.8% males, 47.2% females; Mage = 18.87 years, SD = 1.48) participated in a four-wave longitudinal study across two years, and the interval between waves was 6 months except for the second and the third wave (12 months). Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version, University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale-8 and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 were used to assess participants’ smartphone addiction, loneliness, and depressive symptoms, respectively. Random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPM) were utilized to separate between- and within-person effects. ResultsThe results of RI-CLPM demonstrated a bidirectional association between smartphone addiction and depressive symptoms (from T3 to T4), and loneliness (T3) mediated the association between smartphone addiction (T2) and depressive symptoms (T4) at the within-person level (indirect effect = 0.008, 95%CI = 0.002–0.019). ConclusionsGiven that loneliness served as a mediator in the relation between smartphone addiction and depressive symptoms, enhancing offline interpersonal communication may hold great promise for alleviating negative emotions and reducing the dependence on online communication.

Relationship Between Negative Life Events and Depressive Symptoms for Chinese College Students: The Mediating Role of Rumination and Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support and Psychological Capital.

External events affect individuals through their cognitive process, a model on how and when negative life events are associated with depressive symptoms was tested by considering individuals' internal and external factors based on the conservation of resource theory (COR). We conducted a survey to test our hypotheses. Participants were college students who were selected with the cluster sampling method and were asked to complete the scales measuring negative life events, perceived social support, psychological capital (PsyCap), rumination, and depressive symptoms in the classroom with a unit of class. A total of 764 questionnaires were distributed and returned, and 703 valid data were obtained finally. The present study found that (1) the relationship between negative life events and depressive symptoms was moderated by perceived social support negatively, such that the relationship was stronger with low perceived social support; (2) the relationship between negative life events and depressive symptoms was mediated by rumination; (3) the relationship between rumination and depressive symptoms was moderated by PsyCap negatively, such that the relationship was stronger with low PsyCap; (4) the indirect relationship between negative life events and depressive symptoms through rumination was moderated by PsyCap negatively, such that the indirect relationship got stronger with low PsyCap. Rumination is an essential process for negative life events to affect depressive symptoms, PsyCap and perceived social support help alleviate the detrimental effect of negative life events from internal and external perspectives, respectively. Our research conclusion has a theoretical and practical implementation for reducing depressive symptoms in college students.
